NOTE
Publisher’s Make it Count!
SPRING IS HERE and summer is on its way. And from the looks of it we are in for another beautiful season of sunshine. It is one of the most anticipated times of the year. A time when we begin to plan our summer activities and hope we can fit it all in. This time of year my mind quickly turns to thoughts of adventure that I personally want to take on during the summer.
Where children can explore, create & learn!
Here is a short wish list. A short road trip to Seattle to take in the city, but more importantly catch a few Mariners games. In my opinion, there is not a better stadium in which to watch America’s favorite pastime. And then there’s the Fourth of July. I love to spend this holiday on the water, under the stars, and watching fireworks with friends and family. Life simply does not get any better than that. There are several outdoor concerts between Montana and Seattle, many great bands, and of course the outdoor music festival, the “Summer Sounds at Skansi Brother’s Park.” Go on a few long drives. This is a must. You don’t always need to be going somewhere as long as you get to drive taking in this natural scenery that surrounds us with no pressure of a deadline. Time to get that bike out, tuned up and ready to ride. There are so many great trails and scenery to take in on a bike ride. Spend quality time with family and friends. Sometimes it’s important to just sit around, talk, hang out and relax without the pressure of having a million things lined up that take up the day. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to sit beside the fire outside and relax with good company. No matter what you choose to do this summer, it’s important to make it count. Whatever it is, make some memories that will last a lifetime. Enjoy this time, because before you know it, we will be saying to each other, “I can’t believe it’s already over.” We create community! We connect people! We build trust!

Putting Dinner On The Table
Food Backpacks 4 Kids supports local families. By Julianna Verboort. HAVE YOU EVER HAD TO DECIDE between paying rent and buying groceries? Or genuinely not known where your next meal would come from? On the surface, it can appear that poverty is non-existent in Gig Harbor. But steps away from the charming harbor and glittering galleries, there are families and individuals who face these challenges every day. Programs through public schools provide free or reduced cost breakfast and lunch for children whose families qualify. On the weekend, those kids often do not have access to three meals a day. Food Backpacks 4 Kids (FB4K) is a locally run, independent non-profit organization that works to put food on the table for local families in need, serving more than 500 children in 2013. That number has steadily increased since the program was established five years ago. This innovative program works hand-in-hand with the Peninsula School District and other organizations to provide nutritious, easy-to-prepare meals for food-insecure children and their families within the Peninsula School District. FB4K volunteers bundle meals into backpacks, filling them with enough food to feed a family of four for the weekend. The discreet backpacks are delivered once a week to schools in Peninsula School District and distributed to children whose families are enrolled in FB4K. As PCF’s website points out, “The difference this makes is a more alert and eager-to-learn student Monday morning: a student who is less disruptive and who is able to focus on academics.” Children with access to healthy nutrition feel better, grow better, and learn better. They benefit, their families benefit, our community benefits.
12 Gig Harbor Living Local | www.GoGigHarbor.com
FB4K is the primary program of Peninsula Community Foundation (PCF). PCF serves the humanitarian needs of children and neighbors, creating positive changes in the Gig Harbor, Kitsap and Key Peninsula communities. It provides a forum for service organizations to collaborate, working together to ensure services are not duplicative and that gaps in services can be filled, allowing the organizations to leverage their assistance to the community. School counselors identify families who can benefit through the FB4K program, and each school has enrollment forms. Unlike other supplemental nutrition programs, FB4K does not require participating families to meet poverty thresholds or assistance parameters. Karen Jorgensen, PCF President, said “No one is turned away; if a family decides they need assistance, they can enroll.”
ServiceS include: During the summer, Food Backpacks 4 Kids runs a lunch program at the Key Peninsula Civic Center, offering hot home-cooked meals three days per week for children and their families. FB4K offers to pick up those who do not have transportation, and also distributes additional food items,
Children with access to healthy nutrition feel better, grow better, and learn better. They benefit, their families benefit, our community benefits. fresh fruit, and home essentials during the summer. The USDA Summer Food Service Program for youth and the Washington Child Nutrition Program support the summer meals. FB4K partners with FISH Foodbank and the Emergency Food Network who provide most of the commodities. They also partner with Communities in Schools, the Family Resource Center on the Key Peninsula, and Peninsula School District on special projects and receive support through the Russell Family Foundation.
The Gig Harbor community is rich in resources and caring citizens. In this community, no one should go hungry, and FB4K makes it easy to help solve this problem! You can help by contributing food and monetary donations (more than 80% of monetary donations are used to purchase food for the backpacks). A sponsorship of $280 will provide food backpacks for a child and his/her family for a full school year. Canned meats and fish, pasta and sauce, peanut butter, granola and protein bars, and complete pancake mix are a few of the preferred food donation items. Fresh vegetables and fruits are welcomed by both FB4K and FISH Foodbank, something for productive gardeners to keep in mind during the summer months. Volunteers are needed to fill backpacks and to help with fundraising events and the summer lunch program. Food donations can be delivered to Agnus Dei Lutheran Church, 10511 Peacock Hill Ave NW, Gig Harbor, contact Phyllis Brandt at 253.858.3084; Harbor View Fellowship, 4819 Hunt St. NW, Gig Harbor, contact Angie Cabe at 253.370.3674; and Key Peninsula Middle School, 5510 Key Peninsula Highway KPN, Lakebay, contact Allan Boyd at 253.358.0625. Home&Essentials Simplify Your Life Living large in a tiny space. By Sarah Polyakov. “To be able to figure out what you really need and scale it back makes the rest of life easier.” –John Wells LAST WEEK, MY BEST FRIEND and I found ourselves reminiscing about our lives twenty years ago. My friend uttered her usual refrain: “Twenty years ago, I was the happiest I have ever been—and yet, twenty years ago, I was a poor student living in a tiny dorm room.” My friend, who now feels very disillusioned by the materialism of our culture, was referring to our year studying at a French university. This was the year I was first introduced to living in a small space. When I opened the door to my dorm room for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised. My dorm room, which measured only 12 feet by 8 feet, was an unexpectedly welcoming and sunny space. At the far end of my room, there was a large floor to ceiling window that opened, revealing a beautiful view of the rolling mountains just beyond the city. A twin bed was next to the window and it spanned the width of the room. On the walls, there were shelves and a large built-in study desk. There was also a bookcase divider that separated the sleeping and study area from a large sink, mirror, and closet. Even though the room was only 96 square feet, it lived surprisingly large since it had everything I needed, including a hot plate for cooking. For me, this tiny space was living large at its best. Though I didn’t have the conveniences I was used to in the United States, I never missed them. For in this communal dorm, I made many unforgettable
friendships. Somehow, out of those small spaces, larger-than-life memories and enduring bonds were made. The American Dream Like many in our generation, we were told to seek the American dream, which had a very narrow definition: a McMansion, several cars in our garage, and 2.5 children. This definition of the American dream was a symbol for security, completeness, and happiness—and like many others, we each wanted our slice. Yet, during the past twenty years, so much has changed. Little did we know the American dream was going to evaporate before our eyes. Back then we could not have predicted the financial crisis of 2008. Even after the Great American Downsizing, home ownership remains both sacred and necessary to survival. However, we have been given an opportunity to think outside the box for both creative and fulfilling solutions. We have been tasked with a transformative task: assessing our actual needs, instead of what we believe we need. In next month’s article, I will take you on a tour of the Tiny Home Movement and show you how living in a small space, mortgage free, is full of possibilities. Most importantly, we will discover how life in a small space affords the opportunity to experience a flexible and more autonomous lifestyle.
SUMMER IS HERE! THE AWOB AWARD FOR BUSINESS EXCELLENCE
Get organized and enjoy all the season has to offer.
IT IS THAT TIME OF YEAR when the calendar fills up quickly. Summer barbeques, camps for the kids, and a lot of outdoor activities seem to leave little time for household chores. But by following these simple tips at the beginning of the summer season, you will find you have more time to sit back and enjoy the beautiful summer. Start outdoors. Walk around your home and look for areas that need painting, staining or repairs – such as wooden decks and fences. Tune up your garden equipment and finish yard clean up. Prepare garden beds for hot weather with a fresh layer of compost. Remember to program your sprinkler system. Schedule your annual window cleaning and pressure washing before the summer parties begin. Do you need to update the patio/deck décor or furniture?

Go inside. Service your air conditioner and change the ceiling fan direction so it pushes the air down. Establish a house rule that shoes are removed at the door so dirt, sand, and grass aren’t tracked through the house. Create a bucket list of fun things you’d like to do this summer. Let the fresh air in! Open your windows and let the fresh air in! Placing a houseplant, such as snake plants, spider plants and English ivy, next to your bathroom sink will help filter the air.
Maintain. Protect. Organize. Peace of mind strategies for home.
GigHarborHomeManagement.com
Clean the refrigerator. With summer upon us it is also important to keep cold drinks on hand. By taking the time now to clean the coils on your refrigerator, you will be taking steps towards making it run smoothly all summer. Be sure to unplug your refrigerator and remove the base plate or the top grate, using your vacuum cleaner attachment to remove dirt and lint that has accumulated.
16 Gig Harbor Living Local | www.GoGigHarbor.com
It’s time for FUN! Take some extra time to organize your calendar. Book those summer parties, register for kids’ camps, plan family activities, and even schedule some downtime. Organize summer supplies and stock up on sunscreen, bug spray, beach towels and kids’ clothing. (Do the swimsuits fit?) Toss or donate anything your kids have outgrown or won’t use. Pack a “Grab n’ Go Bag” to make last minute summer outings a breeze. Finalize vacation plans and hire a Home Watch Manager to check on your home while you’re gone. Did You Know? Professional organizers can keep your home running smoothly. Why not treat yourself to a housecleaner over the summer months who can help keep your home clean and organized so you can get the most out of the summer months!
FINANCIAL FOCUS | EDWARD JONES
AVOID PROBLEMS BY UPDATING BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS
Make Your Financial Future a Priority.
Article for use by Edward Jones financial advisor Erin Abrigo of Gig Harbor. LIKE MANY PEOPLE, you might not particularly enjoy thinking about your estate plans, but such planning is necessary to make sure your assets go where you want them to go. And it’s just as important to regularly review your plans with your tax, legal and financial professionals in case any changes are needed. For instance, some of your wishes expressed in your will may be overridden by beneficiary designations you filled out years ago. If these designations become outdated, your assets could be passed to those you didn’t intend. You might be surprised at how many of your financial assets and legal documents have beneficiary designations tied to them. If you have an IRA, a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, a life insurance policy, an annuity, a transferon-death (TOD) arrangement, or any of a variety of other assets or accounts, you almost certainly named a beneficiary. And this beneficiary designation offers a simple, direct and efficient way to get assets in the hands of your loved ones who survive you. However, as time goes by, you may experience many changes in your life — and when your life changes, your beneficiary designations may need to follow. But if you are like many people, you might forget to update these designations after a marriage, divorce or other change in your family situation. And because the beneficiary designation is a legally binding document, the asset will go to the person you once named as a beneficiary, regardless of your current relationship status. It really doesn’t take much effort to look over your accounts and legal arrangements to ensure that your beneficiary designations are current — and if they aren’t, it’s pretty easy to change them. In fact, for some financial accounts, you may be able to update the beneficiary designations online. In any case, plan on reviewing your beneficiary
designations regularly, but especially when you experience a change in your life. Here’s one more thing to keep in mind: Make sure your current beneficiaries are informed that they will eventually be receiving your 401(k), IRA, life insurance proceeds or other assets that require a beneficiary designation. This advance knowledge may help your loved ones as they plan and maintain their own financial and investment strategies. Although it’s clearly important for you to update your beneficiary designations and to communicate your actions, you will still need to attend to other areas of your estate planning, such as providing care for minor children or dependents, deciding who you want to receive specific items that do not carry a beneficiary designation, naming someone to manage your affairs should you become incapacitated, and specifying the control you wish your beneficiaries to have over their inheritance. These are just a few examples of estate-planning considerations. Because everyone’s situation is different, you will need to consult with your legal advisor to determine the level of estate planning you require. As we’ve seen, updating your beneficiary is one piece of the puzzle — but to leave the legacy you desire, you’ve got to complete the picture.

BRAINWAVE OPTIMIZATION®
A safe, non-invasive treatment for mental illness and brain injury. By Patty Hutchens. MENTAL ILLNESS. It has long been a subject that society sweeps under the rug. After all, without concrete evidence such as an x-ray or other diagnostic tool, how can we know if it’s “real.” But it is very real. Statistics provided by the National Institute of Mental Health reveal that 1 in 4 Americans suffer from some sort of mental health issue.
For those who have tried medications and countless hours of therapy to overcome issues such as chronic fatigue, anxiety, hyperactivity, obsessive issues and symptoms from brain injury, Brainwave Optimization® has offered new hope.
Then there is brain trauma. In the past few years there has been an increased amount of attention paid to head injuries. And not just in the NFL, but in our schools as well. Those who suffer from concussions, whether it is one or many, are at an increased risk for a lifetime of issues including depression, anxiety, decrease in cognitive function, memory loss, sensitivity to light and more. For those in the medical profession who are tasked with diagnosing and treating mental illness and brain injury, it is challenging. Taking the objectivity out of a diagnosis makes it difficult for medical providers. They rely instead on a patient’s self-reporting of symptoms. And treating the symptoms can be even more of a challenge. Fortunately there is an increase in awareness and research that have helped those who have suffered in silence too long. One such result of that research is the use of a technique called Brainwave Optimization®, developed by Brain State Technologies. Using neuroscience and computer technology, providers can offer their clients an opportunity to overcome their cognitive deficiencies, emotional and physical challenges and live a more enriched life.
Post Concussion Intervention
253.432.4418 5727 Baker Way NW, Ste 204 Gig Harbor, WA GigHarborBrainTraining.com Lee@GigHarborBrainTraining.com
Just how does Brainwave Optimization® work? It is a non-invasive procedure utilizing electroencephalogram (EEG) equipment that allows one to formulate a program specific to the individual needs of the client. “The relaxing neurotechnology provides to the person their unique, nearly real-time, dynamic auditory representation of their brain’s activity, and on its own the brain self optimizes during the process,” said Lee Burki of Gig Harbor’s SoundBrain. For those who have tried medications and countless hours of therapy to overcome issues such as chronic fatigue, anxiety, hyperactivity, obsessive issues and symptoms from brain injury, Brainwave Optimization® has offered new hope. Many have reported quick and effective results using the non-invasive, medication free process.
How does one know when an injury is serious enough to seek medical treatment? One of the common myths is that one must lose consciousness for something to be labeled a concussion. This is far from the truth. A concussion is a caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way one’s brain normally works. And it does not have to be a significant blow or bump. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth. Whether it is getting your bell rung or a mild bump or blow to the head, the result can be serious. If you or a loved one has suffered from mental illness or a brain injury, consult with your medical provider to see what approach is right for you. Brainwave Optimization® is one way you can possibly overcome your symptoms and it’s noninvasive and medication free.

IS MY PET FAT? What you can do to help your animal lose weight and gain better health. By Dr. Dawn Mehra, North Idaho Animal Hospital, Sandpoint, Idaho. OBESITY IS THE MOST COMMON nutritional disease of dogs and cats. Pet obesity is increasing rapidly because people and pets love to eat and America is the land of plenty! Obesity risk factors for pets include: neutering, inactivity, indoor lifestyle, disease state, and genetic predisposition. What is obesity? Obesity is any body weight in a mature animal that is 15-20% over ideal.
We Specialize In: Large Breed
Special Handling Cat Grooming
Technical Clips 6615 38th Avenue Northwest Gig Harbor, WA 98335 253.851.PAWS (7297) Tues-Sat: 8am – 5pm |
What causes obesity? The primary cause - you guessed it - the HUMAN enabler! Our furry friends eat what their owners feed them. Most pet exercise routines are generally a result of their caregiver’s lifestyle. Popular thought is that grain based diets and processed food cause obesity. The bottom line is that calories in = calories out. Veterinarians observe co-existing conditions like lameness, heart, lung, and hormonal and metabolic problems. What does it MATTER? Obesity can cause and exacerbate some diseases such as diabetes, liver and heart disease, skin conditions, thyroid disease and arthritis. Obese pets are a poor anesthetic risk, and most would agree, have reduced quality of life. How can my pet lose weight? A combination of dietary and movement changes is necessary to assure weight loss. • Calorie reduction - Pets need fewer calories. Sometimes, “cutting back” on regular food results in a nutrient imbalance. Offer a reduced calorie diet and feed fewer than 20% fat calories. Make sure the new brand (often a prescription veterinary diet) has a good fiber source, high quality protein, chromium, essential fatty acids (for the skin), and extra vitamin A.
Mon & Sun: Closed
www.elitepetsalon.com
• Exercise increase - The most difficult part of a weight loss plan is exercise. If possible walk/run dogs twice daily (while you bike?), or play “house fetch” (while you watch tv?). Often, arthritis, heart disease, and owner lifestyle demands can make exercise virtually impossible. Pets burn calories searching for their food at mealtime, hiding food works especially well with cats.
$8 OFF
for first time clients.
• Hormonal testing - Specific blood tests can diagnose thyroid disease, a common disease of large breed dogs. • Last resort - A new medication to decrease appetite and speed up weight loss is extremely helpful for those challenging cases that don’t respond to food and exercise change. Concerned about your pet’s weight? Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian today!

343 SOLUTIONS PROVIDING PTSD RELIEF
Hope, renewal and transformation for body, mind and spirit. WE ALL SUFFER FROM OCCASIONAL, unexpected amounts of stress considering our everyday hustle and information overload. However, if that sense of overload never goes away and becomes a part of daily living, the line between run-of-the-mill stress and Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) can become blurred. The difference between a hard time and getting stuck in PTS can be subtle. After an overly stressful event, most people re-live it, have difficulty sleeping and feel overwhelmed for weeks. When weeks stretch into months, or a person is repeatedly exposed to stressful incidents, PTS can become very real.

If it’s been more than three months since a stressful event and symptoms are still present, consider learning more about what’s causing them. There are seven criteria that a mental health professional uses to diagnose PTS, but you might be surprised to know: • PTS is a normal response to an abnormal amount of stress • PTS is not a lifetime sentence • PTS doesn’t have to be something you live with or learn how to manage Here are a few other things you might not know about PTS: “Aren’t people with PTSD dangerous?” People struggling with PTS, called ‘survivors,’ are typically only dangerous to themselves. Herein lies a paradox - survivors driven into isolation by society’s views about mental health issues, cannot achieve healing in isolation. It takes a team of caring, compassionate, PTS informed people to support the survivor’s healing journey. People are only pushed to the brink of violence when they believe there are no alternatives. “PTSD is a veteran thing, isn’t it?” Yes and no. Actually, women have been unrecognized survivors fighting on the front lines of PTS for centuries. Active duty military personnel certainly have opportunity for exposure to the kinds of trauma that causes PTS, but it also affects children and firstresponders, such as police and fire personnel. “The last thing I want to do is dig up a painful past.” It’s not necessary to relive painful traumatic events to move forward in healing PTS. Rather, practicing how to focus on the present, understanding how the brain uses the past to keep us safe and learning better coping skills are keys to handling PTS.
Authentic and reassuring, this book gives a practical and personal approach to healing those with PTSD.
Think you might be struggling with PTS? Reach out! Is someone you care about having a hard time ‘getting over’ a painful experience? These simple things can help: Be generous. A simple smile, text message sent at just the right time or listening ear can be the one thing that helps someone get through a difficult day. Make yourself available and set boundaries. Become clear about how involved you’re willing to become; then let your friend or loved one know you’re available to help within certain limits. Consider how you think and speak about mental health. People are the most important part of healing from PTS; however, ignorance and insensitivity about how mental health issues show up in a person’s life can cause unintentional emotional damage. Pass it along. Discover helpful tips for over-all wellness or emotional healing, then share them with people you love and care about.

Williams Tree and Stump Removal Helping beautify your landscape. By Jocelyn Stott.
THERE’S NOTHING WORSE than the feeling that a monster Douglas Fir may come down on your house the next time a storm blows in. But removing large trees is not a task most homeowners care to take on – that’s a job for their neighbor, Mike Williams, owner of Williams Tree and Stump removal. “I wanted to own my own business in the community where I live,” explains Mike. Williams Tree and Stump removal currently employs four full-time employees in addition to Mike and his wife, Cindy. While hazardous trees are certainly one reason to call Mike, some of the other services provided by Williams Tree and Stump Removal include pruning, tree removal, stump grinding, view enhancement, dead wood removal, and more. Since nature can sometimes blow in unexpectedly, Williams also makes emergency calls if needed. “I answer my phone seven days a week,” says Mike. As a member of The International Society of Arboriculture, Williams uses proper arborist practices when pruning and can also remove limbs that are hazardous or that interfere with wires, building facades, windows or that obstruct streets and sidewalks. Sometimes, Mike says, it’s more necessary to removed diseased or insect-infested limbs and unnecessary branches for the health of the tree. “They don’t all have to come down,” says Mike. Mike says his crew is careful to work quickly but still leave little or no impact on properties where they work. “Our goal is to make wooded landscapes safe, beautiful and appealing while preserving the beauty of nature,” says Mike.

“Expertise you can trust, from people who care” Good pruning can also strengthen a tree so it won’t be as likely to blow over in a storm. Of course, once the tree comes down there’s the issue of the stump left behind. Digging the stump out with excavation equipment can be very expensive and disruptive. A simple, cost-effective solution is for Williams Tree and Stump Removal to grind the stump so that it’s no longer an obstacle or eyesore and in most occasions you can replant in the same location.

Before any work gets started, Mike provides a quick estimate and creates a plan of action based on many factors including whether a tree is dead or dying, hazardous, causing obstruction and cannot be corrected through pruning; crowding and creating an unhealthy environment for nearby trees; needs to be replaced with a more suitable specimen; is obstructing new construction or if the homeowner just wants it gone. Mike says his company uses quality equipment that helps him get the job done right and at an affordable cost. “I want to be the best, so my crew and I work very hard to satisfy our customers. I know neighbors will recommend me if I do that,” he says.

By Ann Barrington. COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF PENINSULA (CISP) is the local, independent affiliate of the nation’s largest and most effective organization dedicated to keeping kids in school and helping them succeed in life. At CISP, we work hand in hand with Peninsula School District staff, the Gig Harbor/Key Peninsula communities, and families to surround our students with a caring network of support to help them stay in school and succeed in life. CISP provides integrated student services at four schools in Peninsula School District. They employ Site Coordinators who connect students and their families to basic and critical community resources, tailored to each student’s specific needs. “We are grateful for the support that Communities In Schools of Peninsula provides for us at Vaughn Elementary. Relay for Life - Take Part and Be A Hero! By Julianna Verboort. The American Cancer Society’s fundraiser, Relay for Life, began in Tacoma, has grown into an international event, and is the legacy of Dr. Gordon Klatt, who calls Gig Harbor home. The dynamic local chapter raised nearly $240,000.00 in 2013. Relay for Life takes place June 20th-21st at Goodman Middle School with the opening lap at 6pm Friday and closing at noon on Saturday. This year’s theme “Who is your hero?” will inspire decorations for team tents. Teams camp overnight and take turns looping the track for the 18-hour fundraiser, which includes ceremonies honoring survivors and lives lost to cancer. students would fall through the cracks,” said Susan O’Leary, Principal, Vaughn Elementary School. “Our Site Coordinator does a terrific job of connecting with some of our most struggling students. I believe that our school would not be as successful as it is without our partnership with CISP and our Site Coordinator.” In addition to the in-school services, CISP offers after-school mentoring programs at 10 of the 15 schools in Peninsula School District. Each week during the school year, 140 volunteer mentors meet with their students to work on reading or math skills. By providing students with a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, we create a safe place to learn and grow, a healthy start to a healthy future, a path toward marketable skills upon graduation and a chance to give back to peers and the community. “We served over 5,000 kids in Peninsula School District last year, and we are on track to meet or exceed that number this school year,” said Colleen Speer, Executive Director of CISP.”
“We encourage anyone to attend. It is family friendly, a great overnight sleepover with amazing people working together to end the battle with cancer,” says Nicole Betcher, volunteer Chairperson for Gig Harbor Relay for Life. Go to www.relayforlifeofgigharbor.org to register or donate. Checks written to American Cancer Society can go to any registered Relay team member, and donations will also be taken at the event.
Working with both schools and their surrounding communities, Communities In Schools of Peninsula does whatever it takes to help kids stay in school and succeed in life. Based directly inside schools, Communities In Schools of Peninsula connects students and their families to basic and critical educational and community-based resources, specific to each student’s needs. As the nation’s leading dropout prevention organization, Communities In Schools is the only one proven to both decrease dropout rates and increase graduation rates. Reverence Jewelry Rare Finds • Custom Designs • Antiques • Buy • Sell • Trade • Consign • Repair • Verbal Appraisals. Article by Sarah Polyakov.
GEMSTONES: they have captured our imagination long before the written word. In the depth of each facet, ancient peoples imagined they held the power to heal ailments and to bring good luck. We have all heard that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but in Greek and Roman times, diamonds were considered to be the splinters of fallen stars. Pharaohs prized peridot as the gem of the sun, and they believed this extraordinary stone had the power to bestow the gift of harmonious marriages on those who wore it. In Scandinavian lore, the golden hues of amber were said to be the tears that Freya shed as Odin found his way out into the world. But, most of all, gemstones have become eternal symbols of affection for a beloved spouse or family member. The love that we cannot express in mere words is universally understood in the form of a one-of-a-kind necklace or ring. Tom, a master jeweler with forty years of experience, Cheryl, and Erik, a GIA Graduate Gemologist with thirty-four years of experience, invite you to come and see their mesmerizing collection of unburied treasure at Reverence Jewelry, located conveniently in the heart of downtown Gig Harbor on the waterfront. Lose yourself in the reverie of another time as you browse collections of rubies, sapphires, alexandrite, black opal, diamonds, emeralds, tanzanite, tourmaline, Tahitian and South Sea pearls, peridot, amethyst, citrine, aquamarine, blue topaz, Baltic amber, and larimar, a rare seacolored gem from the Dominican Republic known as the daughter by the sea. If you do not see the piece your desire, please talk to Tom. Since he is a master jeweler, designer, and incredibly talented artist, he is happy to design or replicate the custom piece of your dreams. Reverence Jewelry is also your one-stop shop for all of your jewelry essentials. Because Erik and his wife purchase, sell, trade, design, replicate, repair, and verbally appraise jewelry, there is no need to go anywhere else. Nonetheless, they welcome you to shop around since their personal motto is that “informed customers are their best clients” and they are always looking for new opportunities to educate customers.

O’Shea McLaughlin
PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL. BY MERIDITH HATCH. PHOTOS BY VERONICA FOLEY. FAMILY PLAYS A BIG ROLE in helping Peninsula High School track and basketball player O’Shea McLaughlin aim high on the court and on the track. Playing point guard and shooting guard for Peninsula basketball for four years, O’Shea also ran track all four years. “I’m a sprinter, and I run the 100 meter, 200 meter, and I long jump, though my best and favorite event is the 4x1 meter relay,” O’Shea says. O’Shea credits his father, stepmom and mother for helping him along. “My father and stepmom have really helped me the most. I got hurt practically every year of my high school career, and they helped me stay positive and always told me things are always going to get better. My father has pushed me to be a good Christian, a great athlete and also an incredible big brother to my three younger siblings.” O’Shea was able to play on the basketball team with his younger brother during his senior year; something he says, “was awesome.”
QUOTABLE “He is like a big brother and mentor to me. I’m really going to miss playing for him.”
Coaches have also played a big part in his success. O’Shea says Curtiss Hall has been a great track coach, making it fun to be part of the Peninsula track program. Basketball coach Jake Jackson has also made a deep impression. “He is like a big brother and mentor to me. I’m really going to miss playing for him.” One of his most memorable moments in his athletic career was in his senior year during a basketball game against Steilacoom. Down by a point with only a few seconds left on the clock, O’Shea stole the ball, went coast to coast and made a layup followed by a free throw to win the game.
Off the court, O’Shea has enjoyed American Sign Language (ASL) and English. “I just love learning about the culture of ASL and love being able to sign.” With his 3.5 GPA, O’Shea expects to attend a four-year university, with Washington State University and Eastern Washington University at the top of his list. Whichever school he chooses, O’Shea plans to walk on the basketball team. Aiming to give back to other athletes, much like his family and coaches have given to him, O’Shea plans to earn an associate and bachelor in sports medicine. Favorite Food: General Tso’s Chicken Favorite Teacher: Choir teacher Alison Ellis. “She is always there for me. No matter what I can always count on her for support in and out of choir.”

GIG HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL. BY MERIDITH HATCH. SENIOR KYLE MIYAKE works hard and doesn’t let adversity hold him back. A true multi-sport “football” player, Kyle played soccer for seven years with Harbor Premier Football Club and was a kicker/ punter with the Gig Harbor High School football team this past season. A wellrounded athlete, Kyle has also played baseball for four years.
Kyle’s hard work isn’t limited to the field. His favorite subjects are math and public speaking, and he plans to study Business at Central Washington University this fall. He attributes his success to lessons learned as an athlete. “Many of the best athletes are also the strongest students because they have learned how to effectively manage their time.”
A four-year veteran of the Gig Harbor Boys’ soccer team, Kyle made the varsity team in his sophomore year. Kyle worked hard, maintained a positive attitude, and went to the state playoffs with his team. His hard work paid off when his teammates and coaches named him Most Improved Player.
While playing a club soccer game last September, Kyle injured his knee, tearing his ACL, MCL and meniscus, leaving him unable to play high school soccer his senior season. Recognizing Kyle’s leadership, Coach Northstrom appointed Kyle captain of the soccer team.
His junior year his dedication was rewarded when Kyle became a varsity starter. He was surprised and honored when Coach Northstrom told Kyle he had made First Team All-Narrows League where he was awarded the team’s Most Valuable Player for defense.
After his injury prevented Kyle from playing all year, Coach Northstrom started Kyle in the last home game of his senior year. Working with the Central Kitsap Coach, Northstrom arranged for the ball to get kicked out of bounds so Kyle could be subbed out.

MY TEAM “Many of the best athletes are also the strongest students because they have learned how to effectively manage their time.” “It meant a lot to me to be a part of my team on the field, if only for a moment,” he recalled. Kyle plans to play college soccer after he recovers, and with hard work, he will. Favorite Food: Hawaiian Fried Noodles. “My dad makes the best.” Favorite Teacher: Mr. Northstrom. “He is very honest with you. He tells you what you need to work on and pushes you to do your best.”

Gig Harbor Garden Tour For Literacy Helping individuals grow and blossom. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos by Patti McFerran.
“Let us remember: one book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.” –Malala Yousafzai AS EACH OF US GO about daily routines, perhaps stopping to read our favorite newspaper or the contents of a nutritional label, most of us do not realize that there are thirty-two million Americans; many just like us, who suffer in silence. We take the mundane or necessary reading content for granted, never stopping to consider that we are profoundly blessed. We are profoundly blessed because those of us who read have been given the priceless gift of literacy. Most of us do not take the time to consider what a life without literacy might look like. We cannot imagine all of the doors that would close to us; not just in terms of job opportunities, but also in terms of experiencing the little joys in life. For example, what would life be like if we no longer had the ability to read our children or our grandchildren bedtime stories as they nestled into our arms? What if we could no longer read email correspondence or text our

friends excited messages when something goes right in our lives? For me, such a life would be akin to living a life without color. If we stop to think about it, so much of the richness that life has to offer revolves around literacy. There is no doubt that a life without literacy would be immeasurably vacant. What about the larger things in life that are necessary for our survival? For example, imagine what it would be like to work in today’s job market where reading is a necessity. Even in blue-collar professions, the ability to read and to write is requisite. Most importantly, one must be able to fill out job applications. In this case, the most mundane job application becomes akin to an insurmountable mountain. Many doors are closed to individuals who cannot fill out simple paperwork. So what would a life without literacy look like for one of those thirty-two million people? Twenty years ago, I was able to see first-hand what such a life might be like. I met a lovely woman Ruth Ann, and I can recall the day as clearly as if it had occurred only last week. That day, as I arrived at the front door to her two-bedroom home, I did not know what to expect. After all, I was a college student and this was my first day of volunteering with a community initiative named ProjectRead. It was the middle of a humid summer day as I held some literacy materials in hand. So it was that I knocked and Ruth Ann promptly answered the door. As her clear, blue eyes
met mine, I never would have been able to guess her own daily, internal struggles. After we exchanged greetings for the first time, Ruth Ann motioned for me to take a seat at her kitchen table. Ruth Ann was a woman in her late twenties with two small children. During our first session, she sat nervously and we made small talk. After all, this was a pivotal moment in her life since it was her first time working with a literacy tutor. We began our lessons by talking about her interests in life and then her practical goals in terms of what she most wanted to be able to read. Ruth Ann had very practical goals. She wanted to be able to read the help wanted advertisements in the local newspaper. She wanted to be able to decipher job applications and documents that had legal implications, such as those for her mortgage. Most of all, she wanted to read her two young boys bedtime stories; a luxury that she had never been afforded. That summer we struggled since Ruth Ann was dealing with another roadblock that affected her progress. As a child, she had been hit in the head by a baseball bat. She was struck so hard that she was left with permanent brain damage. While the damage she incurred was not apparent when we spoke, it was apparent when we were working through reading materials together. During each lesson, we took two steps forward and one step back since the nature of her injury affected permanent memory function.
I love to watch the process of blooming. Whether the blooming concerns the opening of a flower, or the blossoming of a person, both are equally heartening. Still, we worked through her goals: reading her sons a simple bedtime story, looking through the newspaper want ads to locate jobs that she might be able to do, working through loan documents, and reading cards from family members. That summer, Ruth Ann made a lot of progress and was able to acquire a second grade reading level. Though this might seem unremarkable, to Ruth Ann this was tremendous progress and she felt overjoyed. In the fall, I started school again and subsequently Ruth Ann transitioned to another volunteer reading tutor. Still, it was such a profoundly fulfilling endeavor in which to be involved. I love to watch the process of blooming. Whether the blooming concerns the opening
A TOUR FOR LITERACY
of a flower, or the blossoming of a person, both are equally heartening. This month we are fortunate enough to have an event that concerns both the blooming of flowers as well as the blossoming of potential. It is time again for the Gig Harbor Garden Tour that benefits literacy campaigns. Each year, local Gig Harbor residents open their beautiful and meticulously cared for gardens to the public. Here you will find magical pathways leading you through acres of fragrant flowers beds, sparkling water features, and crisp green foliage. How Can You Get Involved? Please join me in your support of literacy programs for children and adults by supporting the Gig Harbor Garden Tour. This self-guided tour will be held on June 28th from 10am-5pm and on June 29th from 10am-4pm. You may purchase tickets online for $25.00 each at www.gigharborgardentour.org. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and enjoy a moment of quiet contemplation. After all, amid these blooming gardens, you will also happily know that you are contributing to the blooming of lives in our community. I could not think of a local cause more beautiful than that!

ShopinStyle Hello Gorgeous! SUMMER 2014 CLOTHING TRENDS FOR THE FASHIONISTA IN ALL OF US. BY SARAH POLYAKOV. FOR ANYONE WHO HAS EVER asked me about my philosophy on beauty, they will remember that I believe all women are beautiful and each woman has a one-ofa-kind beauty that is unique to her. But, I also believe that each woman’s innate beauty is enhanced through the clothing and accessories that she wears. When women are dressed in fashionable ensembles that also make them feel good, they enhance their innate beauty and radiate confidence. Summer has arrived and this season’s trends offer some wonderful choices for assembling outfits that are completely you! I am happy to report that the trends for the summer of 2014 are both vibrant and multifaceted. Most of the offerings for this season are a hit and highly wearable for everyone. Many of the summer trends can be matched with pieces we already own, and they have arrived in stores near you. Some of the delightful offerings for this summer include lightweight tunics with boho embroidery, nautically themed striped shirts; floaty dresses rendered in tropical florals; tailored t-shirts, chic shrugs, and pieces shaded in a rainbow of decidedly subdued pastels. Then there is the array of accessories being offered for the fashionista in each of us. This summer’s accessory offering is bold and beautiful and each piece takes center stage. These include standout pieces like chunky tribal necklaces, glamorous metal belts, elegantly dyed straw hats, and rough-cut stone earrings in glorious shades of greens. Put on a pair of artisan leather sandals, and voila, your summer ensemble is complete. The best part of it all is that there is something for everyone since most of the summer trends are both versatile and flattering. Incorporating Trends Into Your Closet One of the best parts about this season is that we are seeing a lot of mixing and matching of varied textures and styles. Because of this, freshening up your closet with some new pieces will be a breeze. Why not try one of this summer’s boho tunics with your favorite pair of jeans? How about adding a pair of chunky earrings and finishing your ensemble with some tribalinspired leather sandals? This combination, which is infinitely flattering, can easily be worn to so many different casual events, while still being a stand out. For the evening, I love the idea of dressing up one of this season’s tropical floral sundresses. Pair this type of dress with a chiffon shrug or lightweight bolero and a pair of art deco inspired earrings just to mix it up a bit. Add a pair of dressy sandals with heels and you are ready to go to an evening of wine tasting or on a sunset cruise. If you would like to see more examples of outfit ideas for the summer of 2014, please follow me on my blog at sarahlikemedia.tumblr.com. There you will find photos of breezy summer outfits and more fashion tips.

Health&Lifestyle Middle-Aged Musings It’s so not fair! By Teresa Pesce.
This column is dedicated to the Middle-Aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older”, acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. REMEMBER THE DAYS WHEN you could eat hard-boiled eggs and grapefruit for a week and drop ten pounds? Exercise for a few months and see results? I find that the middle aged body laughs at diets, becomes positively hysterical when you try to change it with exercise, and if forced to change by gut-wrenching Herculean efforts, reverts to its original form the moment you relax your efforts.
have a tissue.
My older brother told me as gently as possible, passing me boxes of Kleenex as I wept, that in one’s mature years it takes about three months of unrelenting exercise to even build a FOUNDATION upon which to BEGIN to get in shape. In middle age, we get in shape at a slower pace and get out of shape at a faster pace. Are we clear? Here,
True story: I stopped exercising after six months because I didn’t get the results I expected, and I am here to tell you: Do. Not. Do. That. Drop the latte, pick up the weights and persevere. But be clear on expectations.
If you get discouraged and comfort yourself with mocha lattes, the results you’re discouraged by will disappear completely, leaving you wanting them back even though they weren’t good enough for you before! Sort of like an ex-boyfriend.

We’ve all seen the ads where an Amazonian beauty demonstrates a piece of exercise equipment, with the smiling promise of equal results by using it for 20 minutes, three times a week. While we may all suspect that promise isn’t true, even credible sources promise results from doing cardio and weights three to five days a week. Convinced, I made a commitment to exercise. I was going to be a goddess! After six months of dragging myself out of bed at 5:30 am SIX days a week for a half hour of cardio followed by free weights and stretching, I presented myself to the gym pixie to be weighed, measured and fat-counted. I never missed a workout, steadily upped the treadmill speed and incline, increased the weights and broke a good sweat every time. I ate only nutritious food. I dropped one pants size! I was so proud of myself and excited to behold the rewards of my efforts.

I stepped on the scale and stood still for the tape and held the fat-measuring thingie steady. The results? Drum roll, please: I had not lost a single pound, not shrunk by so much as an eighth of an inch anywhere, and my fat count had reduced by less than one percent. What?? WHAT?! Half a year of workouts and all I did was tone up? The fitness industry LIED! Yes, muscle weighs more than fat, but still! So I stopped working out, and … you don’t want to know. You don’t want to look, either. Lesson learned? Results take more time and effort as you age, but don’t quit! Even Christie Brinkley says she is astonished by how much she has to do now, to maintain the body she has always had. Founder of Sandpoint Onstage, Teresa Pesce is dedicated to supporting and promoting everyone in our community with theatrical gifts, whose age is irrelevant and whose only “weight” is the impact of their art.
Why You Need A Personal Trainer
The benefits are more than you realize. By Lisa Paull, Certified Personal Trainer, FAST Program Director at PneuThera in Sandpoint. NEXT TIME YOU ATTEND a sporting event or watch it on television, check and see if the teams you are watching have a coach present. When you find that coach (or coaches), observe their behavior. Are they quiet and complacent, or are they providing motivation and encouragement for their players? Watch as they instruct and direct throughout the contest. I bet that coach was at every practice session, expecting all his players to participate, setting up drills to increase skills, instructing players on where they can improve. Even the professional teams with the highest level athletes have coaches, and usually more than one. So why do they need a coach? Couldn’t they put on their uniforms, get to the field or court, warm-up, and then play the game without a coach present? They could, but who would decide who’s starting, when substitutes come in, what strategies and plans will be in use? The coach brings the knowledge base and direction beneficial to the organization and flow of the team, providing a foundation for success. You can put on your exercise clothes, get to the gym or fitness center, warm-up, and workout all on your own. But are you getting the most out of that workout? Are you lifting weights with proper form, preventing future injury to your body? Do you have a good understanding of how many repetitions and sets you need to execute for your specific goals? What about cardio exercise? Do you need to do it? How often and at what intensity? How did you prepare your body for exercise?
And what about that day you just can’t get motivated to work out? Perhaps you need to hire a coach? Personal Trainers are personal life coaches, helping you to successfully attain your exercise and weight loss goals. They help you to stay motivated through their encouragement and accountable through their dedication to you. A skilled and knowledgeable trainer will fully assess your needs and concerns, using their expertise to create a personalized exercise plan for you. Exercise benefits will be maximized in the allotted time with variety in exercises to alleviate boredom and continually challenge the muscles. There are plenty of deterrents that will come to mind. Personal Trainers cost money. A good trainer will push you towards the top of your workout capabilities, challenging you to excel. Muscle soreness and fatigue may be a by-product of your work. You may worry about your level of competence and what to expect in a training session, fearing you may fail in your attempts to participate. Perhaps you have trainer trauma from a previous experience. Many different forms of training are available, from private sessions to larger class sessions that may be less costly. Ask questions and make your desires and needs known. Your investment in a healthy body will correct your imbalances, keeping you from costly injury. You’re stronger than you think you are and it all gets easier with time and practice. Find your foundation for success! I support your journey!

CHIROPRACTIC CARE IS SAFE and not restricted to adults who are complaining of a bad back or stiff neck. The various techniques, which include manipulative, cranial, sacro-occipatal, myofascial as well as stretch and exercise techniques, are ideal for both adults and children. Spinal complaints from adults often originate from birth. A traumatic or difficult birth can result in stress to the infant’s skull, neck, shoulders, hips, spinal column and pelvis. Research has shown that even though a child may appear free from pain, the initial damage from various birth or childhood traumas affects the future and wellbeing of the function of the nervous system. Newborns and Babies Children of this age have no way of communicating pain except by their crying and general irritability. Chiropractors are trained to examine nerves, muscles and ligaments in the spine. In addition to a pediatrician consult, a visit to a chiropractor can be beneficial. The exam might involve finger pressure into a muscle or ligament or gentle holding of the skull in different positions. The exam is not painful or aggressive. Toddlers Toddlers are very busy and adventuresome and there are many developmental changes involving coordination, reflexes and spacial awareness. A typical toddler experiences falls, and although minor, can result in significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) which may lead to more serious issues later in life. The crucial nerve

system can be impaired by such traumas. Research has proven that with proper spinal care one is able to attain optimum health in daily living. Clinicians also will tell us that the nervous system controls and coordinates the essential functions of our entire body-circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune systems. Preteens and Teenagers Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine, and if it goes undetected a child experiences a disfiguring problem. The typical growth spurt happens between 12-16 years of age. The critical culprit of this situation is often the ever present backpack, which often is extremely heavy and is not worn ergonomically correct. This is also the age of sports maniafootball, basketball, soccer, wrestling, skiing, hockey, volleyball, tennis, horseback riding, and lacrosse. And the newest sportthe computer! Many of these activities
involve falls or being hit hard or thrown to the ground, and the computer lends itself to poor posture and cranial misalignment. The ideal situation is to catch a problem and fix it immediately to prevent further injury and ailments. Chiropractic care is not a treatment for disease but strives to reduce spinal nerve stress. Many parents have reported chiropractic care to be successful with their children’s health issues such as earaches, upper respiratory infections, neck pain, muscle pain, allergies, accidental injuries, colic, and digestive disorders. Chiropractic care is gentle, noninvasive and drug free and the American Chiropractic Association reports a considerable increase in people who seek care and give a positive endorsement of the benefits. One patient reports, “ Chiropractic for me is wellness and healthy wellbeing for life. It is so wonderful to feel good all the time and to know that I will feel like this for a lifetime.”
“We are committed to providing professional compassionate assistance in a safe and nurturing environment, ensuring a life of dignity and independence for seniors in our community.”

Experience great drinks and much creativity at this Gig Harbor gathering spot. By Julie Reed.
COME AND ENJOY the warm hospitality where there are plenty of things to see and do! Java & Clay Café is a unique spot located in the heart of downtown Gig Harbor. What makes Java & Clay Café so unique? It’s a place to paint your own pottery and drink coffee, wine or beer! Owners Randy and Kelly Blue purchased Java Clay & Café in 2010, but the pottery studio has been in Gig Harbor since 1996. This month, they celebrate their fourth anniversary, attributing their business success to their phenomenal staff. Randy and Kelly feel that their staff has helped create the hospitable culture they initially envisioned and the couple feels they could not have built their business without such great staff. Randy says “We support each other and lift each other up because that’s what family does.” Randy and Kelly really love the sense of community in Gig Harbor, saying, “Gig Harbor is a great place for families, and we consider our staff an extension of our family.” Outside of Java & Clay Café, Randy and Kelly enjoy their family time with two boys, Riley, who is 8, and 6 year old Kolby, as well as camping, fishing, baseball and motorcycle riding on dirt trails. Originally from Eugene, Oregon, the owners are committed to their Gig Harbor community and participate in a variety of activities. Randy coaches Little League, both Randy and Kelly volunteer at Purdy Elementary and Randy is also a board member of the Gig Harbor Waterfront Alliance. There are many “perks” to Java Clay & Café, one of which is the pottery room where people can come to create anything from salt and pepper shakers to serving platters, mugs,
wall art, vases and piggy banks. The options are endless! Kelly says “Even if you are not artistic, you can use templates and specialty glazes to achieve a beautiful piece.” “We also have an off-premise (liquor) license,” says Randy, “which is great for the boaters.” This means that you can buy a bottle of wine or beer to go. Java & Clay’s hours of operation are also of great benefit to customers: seven days a week, 7am-7pm. The couple notes that a part of the hospitality culture is that they will stay open until 9pm if people are there by 7pm. The most important thing to Randy and Kelly is the atmosphere. They like the fact that people can come in and sit and talk, and enjoy each other while creating memories. Come enjoy Ladies Night Out, from 7-11pm on June 20th.

Recipe the Bleu
Blue cheese is a general classification of cow’s milk, sheep’s milk, or goat’s milk cheeses that have had cultures of the mold Penicillium added so that the final product is spotted or veined throughout with blue, blue-gray or bluegreen mold, and carries a distinct smell, either from that or various specially cultivated bacteria. Some blue cheeses are injected with spores before the curds form and others have spores mixed in with the curds after they form. Blue cheeses are typically aged in a temperature-controlled environment such as a cave. Blue cheese can be eaten by itself or can be crumbled or melted into or over foods.
Orange and Asparagus Bleu Cheese Salad GatherIngredients: • 2 oranges - peeled and sliced • 1 1/2 pounds of asparagus • 1 tbsp Orange Juice • 1 cup Litehouse Bleu Cheese Crumbles • 1/4 cup Litehouse® Red Wine Olive Oil Vinaigrette • Salt • Litehouse® Chunky Bleu Cheese (optional, for dipping)
PutItTogether:
1 Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add asparagus and cook until crisp (about 4 minutes). Drain, then place asparagus under cool running water to chill.
2 Whisk together the orange juice and Litehouse Red Wine & Olive Oil dressing. Divide the asparagus, bleu cheese crumbles and oranges among 4 salad plates, drizzle each with the dressing mix. Add salt to taste. Serve with Litehouse Blue Cheese dressing for dipping if desired.

Summer Getaway
Experience the lake, mountains and music in Sandpoint! By Patty Hutchens. WHILE THE TERM “STAYCATION” became popular during the economic downturn in recent years, the reality is that residents of Sandpoint, Idaho have been taking their summer vacations at home for years. Why? Because summer in Sandpoint simply cannot be beat. Voted America’s Most Beautiful Small Town by USA Today and Rand McNally, Sandpoint is nestled between Lake Pend Oreille, which is the country’s fifth deepest lake, and the Selkirk, Cabinet and Bitterroot mountain ranges and is located just 60 miles south of the Canadian border and 45 miles north of Coeur d’Alene. And with the multitude of activities and opportunities for recreating, there is possibly no better place to spend the summer. Whether you are a sailor, a fisherman, or a wake boarder, Lake Pend Oreille and its waterfront amenities are a place where you will feel right at home. There are several marinas from which you can launch your vacation on the water. One popular marina is Holiday Shores, located in Hope a short 20-minute breathtaking scenic drive from Sandpoint. Here one can find a restaurant, café, convenience store and a view that will leave you coming back for more. It is especially popular with sailors because it provides access to the entire lake without the concern of overhead bridges. If you are looking to be in downtown Sandpoint amongst its many great shops and restaurants, Sandpoint Marina provides a great place to explore the town and the water. From there, boaters can dock and be within walking distance of shops, restaurants, walking paths and the Farmers’ Market, just to name a few. Here you can also rent a boat as well as paddleboards, kayaks and more. Another marina, just a few miles west of Sandpoint on Highway 2, is Dover Bay - one of the better-kept secrets in North Idaho. At Dover Bay there is not only a fantastic view and restaurant, but there is a café, market and many homes, condominiums and bungalows to rent and enjoy the 9 miles of walking trails. So just what is there to do in Sandpoint during the summer months? There are a multitude of choices and something for everyone!
One of the highlights of the summer is the Festival at Sandpoint. Over the course of 11 days, there are 8 outdoor concerts in a venue that many performers have said is one of the most beautiful places they have had the privilege to perform. Each year, Festival attendees pack their coolers and bring their blankets to sit under the stars and enjoy the talent of some great musicians. Organizers recently announced this year’s lineup and, as usual, it promises to be a great time. From August 7th through August 17th, people will be treated to music by Huey Lewis and the News, Nickel Creek, Galactica, Montgomery Gentry, The Head & The Heart, Trombone Shorty, Ray LaMontagne, and the Spokane Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights for many with young children is the Family Concert, which includes an array of activities for children prior to the fun filled concert. As word has spread, the Festival at Sandpoint has become increasingly popular. “People have heard about it and want to attend,” said Mack Deibel of the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. “It is magical.” If you plan to come over the 4th of July
