GOODNEWS

Not Your Everyday Graduation Henderson Bay High School is more than you think. By Julianna Verboort.

“At 13, I had an IV drug problem.” This is not an inner-city youth talking, but a young lady in Gig Harbor. “The hardest part of my life was middle school to freshman year, battling drug addiction.” Now 18, Shelby is a straight-shooter about the challenges she’s overcome and her next goals. She’ll speak at Henderson Bay High School’s Class of 2015 commencement ceremony, sharing her story with families, district administrators and scholarship donors. Sitting next to Shelby is Samantha Jo, talkative and engaging. “As a freshman, I hung out with seniors, basically with adults. I wanted to be the only younger kid they liked, to be cool. I felt like I’d lose my friends if I didn’t do drugs,” she explains. “At 13 or 14 it is hard to see that they are not good friends. At that age you haven’t gained the wisdom or life experience to understand that.” Samantha Jo landed in the hospital after twice attempting suicide. She had been diagnosed with childhood depression at age 7. “Drugs became a way to numb the pain, but the depression got worse. My addiction got serious. I attempted suicide. I was in a hole, underground. I stopped going to class, stopped doing sports, stopped talking to friends I’d known my whole life,” she said.

16

It is difficult to reconcile these self-aware high school seniors with the dark descriptions of their recent younger selves. Shelby adds, “It seems unreal now; it seems so long ago. It happened fast.” How have they recovered? They’re presenting senior projects at Family Night, heading to Seattle for senior fun day, and proudly accepting graduation diplomas. Both credit the support of their mothers and Henderson Bay High School (HBHS). HBHS began as a place for students who needed services that larger schools could not provide. The friendly building welcomes a close-knit community of staff and 115 students on a closed campus. Students call teachers by first names. On-campus drug and alcohol screenings insure that kids who are struggling get the necessary help. Class sizes are small, and teachers wear multiple hats. Graduates often continue at community or technical college, military or other post-secondary options. “HBHS is like a family. Students apply to come here because it is a small environment, personable and homey. Some have had issues that have derailed them or made it difficult for them to stay in a big system; this is a place to get back on track and get individual attention,”

LIVINGLOCAL

said Karen White, who has been a counselor at HBHS for 11 years. “It is rewarding to work here because I really get to know the kids.” Samantha Jo’s aunt Theresa Malich was a longtime educator at HBHS, passionate about teaching leadership and problem-solving skills. Beloved by students and staff, she lost her life to cancer in 2008. It seems fitting that HBHS is where Samantha Jo came to heal. She established positive friendships, got into yoga and meditation. “It is probably the best decision I ever made. It was a metamorphosis.” Shelby’s mom enrolled her at HBHS, knowing her daughter needed a watchful environment. “At PHS (Peninsula High School) I had stopped going to class. It was easy to hop the bus to Tacoma, easy to walk off campus, to the spit or Bridgeway. My mom wanted me to come here. Mom was trying to keep me on track and clean.” Shelby entered HBHS with just one-half credit in algebra. “This school helped me catch up. I have a core teacher who makes sure I’m on track.” Students check in with core teachers every Monday and Friday. “The best thing about this school is how the staff is so involved and helpful. I’m going to miss that the most, how they’re there to push me but make sure I

don’t fail,” Shelby said. “It is a place to be reborn,” said Samantha Jo. “We’re seeds and Henderson is where we get put into the garden and the teachers are the water and sunlight that help us grow. They are our resource, our educators in life skills along with school. I consider them to be my aunts and uncles.” On June 12, Shelby and Samantha Jo will stand ready in cap and gown. Their diplomas carry the pride of accomplishment, the weight of all they’ve overcome, and the deep

commitment of the HBHS family, opening the door to move down the road of life. “I’m going to Tacoma Community College to take prerequisites for a dental assistant program, then move on to orthodontics,” said Shelby. “I love teeth!”

The perfect graduation present!

Samantha Jo’s goal is to become a naturopathic physician. She plans to start at North Seattle Community College in the fall. “I realized I’d healed myself through natural processes from depression, and I want to help others heal themselves in the same way.”

The legacy of HBHS is imbued in these words, posted by a former student in response to The Peninsula Gateway’s story of Theresa Malich.

“She said ‘Nobody is better than you, and you are not better than anyone else.’ There is a powerful lesson of humility and self-value there all tied into one.”

HOME & ESSENTIALS Tips & the Latest Trends

Planning for the Future INTENTIONALLY DEFECTIVE GRANTOR TRUSTS CAN BE A USEFUL TOOL IN FINANCIAL PLANNING. BY ATTORNEY RICHARD PATRICK.

There are many types of trusts to legitimately transfer wealth in an effort to avoid estate, income or gift tax or other costs. In most cases, estates with a value of a few million dollars or less can avoid estate taxation with simple planning. However, when we are dealing with amounts larger than a few million dollars, the estate planning needs to be a little more creative.

You can transfer cash into the trust, but you can also transfer real estate or any interest in a limited partnership that you have. The value you have in a limited partnership is generally discounted from its stated value when transferred into the trust. This can greatly increase the tax savings after the transfer. You can also transfer real estate installment contracts into the trust.

Transferring large sums of money, assets or property into a trust can lead to gift taxes. There are other ways to help avoid gift taxes when transferring large assets to a trust, but one way is to use an Intentionally Defective Grantor Trust (IDGT).

When the assets of the trust are sold, there will be no reportable gain or gift tax assessed on the sale. There is also no income tax due on any payments made to the grantor of the trust from the sale of trust assets. Depending on the specific set of facts and circumstances, IDGTs can be converted to a more complex trust that allows the trust to pay any income taxes that are due, instead of the grantor doing so.

An IDGT is an irrevocable — meaning you can’t change it later — trust where any assets or property that are put into the trust are not taxable to the grantor for estate tax, generation skipping transfer tax, gift tax or trust purposes. However, the grantor does pay the income tax on any revenue that is generated by the funds or property in the trust on an ongoing basis. So in this situation the grantor needs to have the ability to pay any income tax due on revenue of the trust. Any income from the trust is reported on the grantor’s 1040 form as if the income was the grantor’s. Because all of the income tax is being paid by the grantor annually, the assets of the trust are growing tax free and avoiding any gift tax to the eventual beneficiaries of the trust.

An IDGT can be very useful, but it should only be considered after a thorough analysis of a person’s complete financial situation with a qualified financial advisor or estate planning attorney. Living in Flow UNLEASH YOUR POTENTIAL.

BY DEBORAH OLIVE.

He carefully tied his shoelaces, stretched his calves and downed 32 ounces of his favorite energy drink. It was moments before the start of the 2014 Boston Marathon, and he expected to beat his qualifying time.

was tired. When Bill ran, he experienced what positive psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls “flow.” Others call it “being in the zone.” This is the runner’s high, and it brought him to the Boston Marathon.

Only five years ago, his doctor told him, “Bill, you have lung disease, and unless you stop smoking, you’ll never heal.” Those words changed his life. He’d tried to quit smoking before, and he expected giving up nicotine to be hard, but he was motivated. However, he didn’t anticipate the challenge of having more time on his hands. To fill the hours, he took up running — well, more like a walk/run. Bill built up his stamina, but he didn’t actually run more than a mile before he slowed to a walk. One day Bill’s neighbor asked him, “How far do you run?”

This state of flow unleashes human potential not only for athletes, but also for artists, writers, parents and people immersed in their work. The list is long. Csikszentmihalyi writes, “You experience the mental state of flow when you’re completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.”

“After all those years of smoking, I run about a mile. Then I walk.” “You know the runner’s high everyone talks about? You’ll never experience it unless you keep running after you’re tired. When you hit that mile mark, kick it up a notch.”

Keep It Up You know the runner’s high everyone talks about? You’ll never experience it unless you keep running after you’re tired.

It seemed crazy, but that day Bill kept running, and he found his second wind. He was pleased with himself. Soon he discovered that by focusing his attention on the movements of his body, the power of his muscles, the force of air in his lungs and the feel of the street beneath his feet, time seemed to fall away. He barely noticed when he

Help for seniors moving to new living spaces

Senior Living Communities UNDERSTANDING THEIR UNIQUE OFFERINGS. BY SARAH FRIESEN, GIG HARBOR HOME MANAGEMENT.

A Personal Move Manager will handle every step:

✓ Expert Guidance ✓ Organizing & Downsizing

✓ Estate & Auction Oversight

✓ Packing & Moving Assistance

In 2012 Smithsonian Magazine named Gig Harbor one of the top five best small towns in America. It is no wonder our community has grown to become a premier retirement destination. In our own backyard there are a multitude of residential communities for those 55 and older, and understanding their different advantages can be challenging. If you or a loved one are considering a move to a senior living community, the following descriptions will help you find the most appealing and beneficial type for your own lifestyle. A Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) combines residential accommodations with a continuum of health care services designed to meet all your medical needs, without having to move to another community in the future. CCRC’s must provide a minimum of two types of service: fully independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing or hospice; some offer all of these options.

✓ Getting Settled

Sarah Friesen BBA

Owner & Home Management Professional

Specially trained:

CCRC residents are charged a “buy-in” or “entrance fee,” which generally ranges from $150,000 to $1,000,000, in addition to continuous monthly payments. Within any CCRC there are three contract types (A, B & C) that reflect whether medical and health care costs are fully covered, partially covered or paid for as needed.

Assisted Living is a residential community that provides housekeeping, social activities and assistance with eating, walking, hygiene, dressing and occasional transportation. Constant nursing care is not provided, but many have Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) on staff. Assisted living prices start at approximately $3,000 per month and will increase based on the care required.

LIVINGLOCAL

Alzheimer’s and dementia care is often provided in a designated area of the community that is specially designed to be safe and secure for those with memory loss. Skilled Nursing Facilities (nursing homes) provide 24-hour medical care by licensed nurses for both short-term and long-term residents. Specialized Memory Care (for Alzheimer’s and dementia) may be available as well. Prices range from approximately $7,000 to $13,500 per month depending on the level of medical care. Some individuals prefer to stay in their own home as long as possible. In-home care organizations provide non-medical assistance with housekeeping, food preparation, dressing and bathing. In-home health care organizations provide medical assistance through nurses, occupational and physical therapists. These services are priced at approximately $25 to $35 per hour. Adult Family Homes provide 24-hour care for two to six adults in a residential setting. In addition to essential services such as meals and laundry, the staff will create customized care plans for residents that may include stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s, memory care, diabetic management, medication administration, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy or hospice care. Prices are usually from about $3,000 to $8,000 per month depending on care levels. There are so many choices within the local area, and it is wise to spend plenty of time researching which options are best for you or your loved one. Should You Make Investment Moves Based On a Strong Dollar?

Make Your Financial Future a Priority.

THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, ERIN ABRIGO.

Currently, the U.S. dollar is pumpedup and powerful. But what does a strong dollar mean to you as an investor?

past. At different times, the markets have performed well with both a strong and a weak dollar.

To begin with, it’s important to understand just what is meant by a “strong” dollar. The U.S. dollar does not exist in a vacuum — its value, from a global perspective, is determined by its changing strength relative to that of other currencies. Let’s look at an example: Suppose that, in 2011, you traveled to Europe and wanted to trade in one dollar for its equivalent value in euros. At that time, your dollar would have converted to about .75 of a euro. Fast forward to early 2015; if you returned to Europe now, your dollar would fetch you almost one full euro. In other words, you can buy more euros because the dollar is “stronger.”

In contrast to its impact on U.S. companies, a strong dollar can help foreign companies compete and may give them an earnings boost from their U.S. sales. Also, the stronger dollar can help make foreign investments “cheaper.” Even more importantly, by taking advantage of the stronger dollar and investing an appropriate amount internationally, gaining exposure to different economies and markets, you can help diversify your holdings, which is important. Although diversification can’t guarantee a profit or always protect against loss, it can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. Be aware, though, that international investing carries special risks beyond currency fluctuations, including political and economic instability.

In fact, earlier this year, the euro hit a 12year low versus the dollar. And it isn’t just the euro; the dollar is strong against almost every other major currency in the world. What has led to this strength? It’s not always easy to determine what’s behind foreign exchange rates — which can fluctuate even more than the stock market — but the recent surge in the dollar seems to be due, at least in part, to its obvious connection to the American economy, which has been growing faster than many other economies around the world. The stronger dollar is also due to expectations that interest rates will remain higher in the U.S. than in many other countries.

The strong dollar may have attracted your attention, but don’t be distracted by it — and don’t overreact. Currency exchange rates can fluctuate rapidly, and no one can predict how long a strong dollar environment will last. By sticking with a solid, long-term investment strategy, you can help keep up the “strength” of your own dollars.

But whatever the reasons for it, the dollar’s strength may be having an impact on your investments. A strengthening dollar typically lowers returns from international investments because you get fewer dollars in exchange for the value in euros or other foreign currencies. And some U.S. companies with a global presence may face challenges due to lower earnings from their international operations.

Transport Yourself GAIN TIME, RELAX AND ENJOY YOUR TRIP.

BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS. PHOTOS COURTESY OF PIERCE TRANSIT.

Will you peddle a bike? Go for a hike? Would you forgo your car if the trip were not far? Would you get on a bus if it wasn’t a fuss? Take a trip on a trolley and bring your friend Wallie? Every day we choose how we get from here to there. Over half of us live in urban areas, and according to the United Nations, 66 percent of our population will live in urban areas by 2050. If you think traffic is bad now, just wait! Did you know that there are two definitions of “transport”; either to describe a system of conveying people or goods from place to place or an overwhelmingly strong emotion? The irony is evident, as conversations about transportation tend to draw out strong emotional responses — much like sitting in a traffic jam! The design of cities and how we get from our homes to our destinations is quickly becoming a serious matter. If we have no rhyme or reason on how we choose to travel, then we will lose opportunities to make better choices in the future. As Janette Sadik-Khan said in her New York Streets TEDTalk, streets are some of the most valuable resources a city has, and yet it is an asset that is largely hidden in plain sight. She shares projects that have reshaped street life by being bold with temporary solutions that yield results quickly.

While we are not all commissioners for the Department of Transportation, we wield more power than we realize. Every trip we choose to take in our independent vehicles speaks to our city planners. It is an unspoken vote for designing auto-centric cities. While U.S. car sales are still on the rise from the recession, there is an overall decline of motor vehicle sales from previous decades. Is it because half of us live in cities now? Or is it that we have more ability to do our jobs from home? Is it because of our concern for the environment? Could it be the cost of ownership, or that the love of sharing is catching on? Or is it simply that traffic is maddening, and we just don’t want to spend so much of our lives sitting in our cars? MSN reported that members of the millennial generation are more interested in going online than getting behind a wheel of a car. Perhaps American car culture is fading much like our postal service system. We admit that snail mail is not the best or fastest form of communication these days. Are our cars the best or fastest option

for transportation now or in the future? What are our options for getting around town or out of town? Every city is unique and has its own transportation plan. In Gig Harbor we are very fortunate as we have many options from watercraft to aircraft, bikes to buses, from trolleys to trails!

Car Sales While U.S. car sales are still on the rise from the recession, there is an overall decline of motor vehicle sales from previous decades.

Let’s take the trolley for example. Your use and support of the trolley has helped to connect our community. You spoke and Pierce Transit listened. This year the trolley will take us to more stops on Peacock Hill to enjoy Gig Harbor North, as well as Uptown and Downtown Gig Harbor. The cost is a fifty cents per trip or a dollar for the day! Talk about rhyme and reason, enjoying the sights while saving money and avoiding traffic. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride! The band is named after the founders’ favorite Seinfeld episode. Photo by Taylor Cryder.

Sounds Like Dolores ONE LOCAL BAND WITH A FRESH, SUMMER SOUND THAT EVERYONE IS SURE TO ENJOY.

BY SARAH POLYAKOV.

When catchy themes from sitcoms and bucket lists meet, bands such as Sounds Like Dolores are born. Sounds Like Dolores, a local band that was formed four years ago, is one of Gig Harbor’s current rising stars. It all began with a conversation between Brian O’Neill and his friend of several years, Kohl Larson. The two were talking bucket lists, and the idea of one day playing in a band at Forza came up. The two friends hosted some informal jam sessions with other musicians. As neighbors overheard the jam sessions, the band was soon invited to play a birthday party. After several similar experiences, the friends soon realized that their jam sessions had turned them into a full-fledged band. Now, all they needed to do was to find a name that suited them. In a flash of random

inventiveness, they decided to pay homage to a favorite Seinfeld episode. Thus, their name is inspired by an episode where Jerry Seinfeld does something very Jerry-like indeed by forgetting the name of the woman that he is seriously dating. Sounds Like Dolores is composed of members Dan Wulick, Jody Cryder, Brian O’Neill, Derek Mullen and multi-talented vocalist Charlotte Knight. None of the members take themselves so seriously that they forget their mission — to have a great time. Brian, who plays rhythm guitar and vocals, notes, “We are having fun and that’s the bottom line.” Sounds Like Dolores carries this infectious, lighthearted attitude with them wherever they go, encouraging the audience to participate in an interactive experience.

27

Even though the band members are hobby musicians, each member possesses the kind of fierce talent that comes from honing their skills for many decades. For example, lead vocalist Charlotte Knight came to the band as a seasoned gospel singer and instrumentalist. While Sounds Like Dolores primarily plays rock ‘n roll from the 80s, 90s and today, they also include country, reggae and funk in their repertoire. Still, all of their songs have one thing in common. “Our guiding principle is that nine out of 10, if not 10 out of 10 songs, need to be dance songs so that people get up and move,” Brian notes. Right now, they are working on an edgy rock ‘n roll version of Bad Romance by Lady Gaga. Sounds Like Dolores is on the move, and the members are intent on keeping their sound fresh. “Our goal is to keep building on the number of people that come to our show. We are often changing things up in a way that maintains the interest of our followers and keeps everyone dancing. One day, we would really love to play Summer Sounds at Skansie,” notes Brian. Sounds Like Dolores has played at local venues such as The Hub, Forza and The Flotation Device. They also enjoy playing for causes and have entertained crowds at the Gig Harbor High School Sports Booster auction, the Paddler’s Cup and the Harbor History Museum. “We would love to play for nonprofits such as the YWCA, children’s advocacy groups

and any number of others. We’re really playing for the love of the music and the enjoyment of the crowd,” notes Brian.

Local Sound Sounds Like Dolores has played at local venues such as The Hub, Forza and The Flotation Device.

Although there is nothing better than the fun to be had when playing music with friends, relationships take work, benefitting from equilibrium and give and take. Brian poignantly observes, “Bands are like marriages in that each person needs to be heard. Right now our proverbial ‘marriage’ is good. We have found a good groove, and I can see us doing this 10 years from now, if we keep it fresh.” While crowds in Gig Harbor, Tacoma and Silverdale have been delighted to enjoy their music and energetic style, Sounds Like Dolores hopes to expand its geographical range and play at venues across Washington State, Sun Valley Idaho and Northern California.

Fortunately for our community, Sounds Like Dolores is not going away anytime soon, with the members sharing the same vision. Brian notes, “What we all know for sure is that we want to keep rockin’ the Harbor for many years to come.” If you want to catch their sound, they will be playing in various local venues such as Zog’s, the Taproom in Tacoma and Forza throughout the summer. THE LONGEVITY SECRET Don’t miss the First Gig Harbor Natural Health Summit. By Sarah Polyakov. Throughout history, most cultures have a tradition that recounts a tale of mythic proportions — for example, the search for healing waters that bestow immortality on all who partake. Searches for this illusive fountain became the obsession of conquerors and explorers alike. In the 21st century, we fortunately discovered these proverbial “healing waters” are only one part of the equation that lead to longevity and aging without looking or feeling old and achieving wellness. This fall, on October 3, you have an exciting opportunity to learn practical ways to take control of your health by attending the first West Coast Summit sponsored by The Institute for Wholistic Rejuvenation, hosted by our own local practitioner, Dr. Gloria Gilbére. While Dr. Gloria emphasizes that supplements and nutraceuticals play an important role in wellness, “We are what we eat and absorb,” and that lack of understanding seems to be the missing link to achieving wellness. Because of this, it is necessary to first create a strong foundation on which to build your health through implementing foundational nutritional changes that also include wholistic detoxification. By attending this first of its kind West Coast Summit, you have the opportunity to empower yourself to take control of your health and learn how to age without looking or feeling old. The Institute for Wholistic Rejuvenation, founded by Dr. Gloria, is a world-renowned

research and educational organization. Dr. Gloria’s mission is to provide healthy, safe, nondrug options and nutritionally based medicine principles for disorders that defy conventional diagnosis and treatment. She has named these often mis-diagnosed, over-medicated, unvalidated conditions invisible illnesses. After 21 years as founder and practitioner of two natural health clinics in North Idaho, Dr. Gloria relocated five years ago to Gig Harbor. As a private practitioner and four-term pastpresident of an international fibromyalgia nonprofit, her vast experiences of 35 plus years consulting and teaching those affected with invisible illnesses places her in a unique position to uncover underlying causes of disorder rather than dealing with symptom care that often becomes drug management. Dr. Gloria is globally respected as a top authority on causes, effects and drug free solutions to inflammatory disorders and has presented her principles in over 11 countries. Her protocols include nutritional modifications, avoiding foods and ingredients that “ignite” inflammation, and holistic detoxification to reduce body burden, toxicity syndromes — major underlying causes of inflammation. She’s been a guest on CNN World, and recently on FOX News for her research and effectiveness in counseling specifically those with fibromyalgia to wellness.

the only magazine dedicated to a nutritionbased approach to wellness. Respectfully known as The Health Detective (with a blog & radio show of the same name), Dr. Gloria offers subscription to the eMagazine as well as free health reports to her 91,000 plus global readers. In addition, she’s authored 18 natural health books, eight courses and over 1,700 health articles for major publications. IN FOCUS CELEBRATE COMMUNITY!

Penlight to celebrate 90th anniversary during PenMet 2015 Family Fun Fest. By Patty Hutchens.

The year was 1925. A loaf of bread cost 9 cents; the average price of a car was $265; and a half-gallon of milk cost 28 cents. It was also the year when Peninsula Light Co. (PenLight), our local member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative, began to serve the Gig Harbor and Key peninsulas as well as Fox Island in western Pierce County. Now, 90 years later, PenLight is the second largest cooperative in the state of Washington, serving more than 31,000 meters with 977 miles of line in its 112 square miles of territory it provides service. In recognition of its 90 years of cooperative ownership, Penlight will hold a celebration on Saturday, July 11 in conjunction with PenMet Parks’ annual Family Fun Fest. The event will take place from 11am to 6pm at Sehmel Homestead Park, 10123 78th Avenue NW in Gig Harbor. There will be something for everyone including food, pony rides, carnival games and much more. There will also be live entertainment by the band The Beatniks. And if you are looking for a lesson in history, it is a great place to learn more about the history of PenLight, which was incorporated in July of 1925 and first energized in December of 1926. This was a time in our country’s history when electricity was common in cities, yet remained widely unavailable in rural areas such as farms and ranches. It was not until 1935 when then President Franklin Roosevelt established the Rural Electrification Administration, bringing power to underserved areas. The funding for this was channeled through cooperative electric power companies such as PenLight.

ABOVE Present location on Goodnough Drive from 1987 to present. TOP RIGHT Old building from 1925 to 1964.

While celebrating the 90th anniversary of the service PenLight has provided is important, it is equally important to recognize the commitment the company has shown beyond its purpose of providing power. Many at PenLight do their part to give back to the community. They volunteer their time and talent in a variety of ways including organizing blood drives, working with local schools, volunteering with our local little league by helping to build a new ball field and paying for the electrical for Key Peninsula Little League ball field and more. “One of our principles is to improve the quality of life for the people in our community, and we have worked very hard in the last 90 years to establish reliable service and build value with our members,” PenLight CEO Jafar Taghavi said. “I hope our members will join us this summer as we remember our past, discuss today’s energy needs and look toward the future.” Mark your calendars for July 11 and celebrate 90 years of community with PenLight.

Summer Fun! THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE GIG HARBOR LIBRARY THIS SUMMER.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY JULIANNA VERBOORT.

For the first time ever, the library is also offering an adult summer reading program. 34

Summertime means reading at the beach, curling up with a good book around the campfire, listening to your children read on a picnic blanket, and so much more fun with books! Take advantage of summer to explore literature and the wide range of opportunities for learning through our friendly, local Gig Harbor branch of the Pierce County Library.

Did you know there are free classes and workshops at the library? Learn to use a 3-D printer! Polish your Word or Excel skills! Make a craft! Listen to Harbor WildWatch presentations! Try drop-in sessions, group activities, book clubs and more. Check with the library’s online calendar to find out what is offered. Some events require advance registration.

The theme of the 2015 youth summer reading program is Superheroes. Kids will enjoy the challenge of reading to earn a prize. Tamara Saarinen, Youth Services Librarian, outlined the incentives for kids birth to 18 years of age.

The Gig Harbor location offers a Job and Business Center, job search workshops, technology classes and even classes through the popular lynda.com and Microsoft IT Academy. Check out the Get Smart program at getsmart. pcls.us for classes. Business technology is available for use too: computers, copiers and fax machines. Need a meeting room for an event? They’ve got that too!

“For age 2 and under, the prize is a duck; for elementary through teen, the idea is to log 15 hours of reading time. They get a moodchanging pencil at 5 hours, a $5.00 fine forgiveness coupon and a bracelet at 10 hours, and at 15 hours, a pass to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium or Northwest Trek plus a free book from Gig Harbor Friends of the Library.” For ages 13 to 18, the hours can be accrued through straight reading or through additional online activities. Additional hours above and beyond 15 can score more free books! The youth summer reading program begins June 22 and continues through mid August. For the first time ever, the library is also offering an adult summer reading program. Try SCOUT, a new game started by the Paul Allen family. The theme is Escape the Ordinary. The game will help you explore your library and connect with your community. Sign up online at scout.pcla.us to find out about activities, earn badges and collect points. There are resources for teens as well, from a teen blog to book lists to teen book club kits and contests. Research colleges, search for scholarships, and explore careers through the library’s curated links, on the website under the kids and teens tab. One of my favorite things about visiting the Gig Harbor library is the display case near the entrance. People from the community display all kinds of interesting objects here, and you never know what you’ll find! I’ve seen antique wind-up toys, award-winning Etcha-Sketch drawings, and many other objects of art. Recently, I enjoyed book-art by local Sarah Johnson, on loan from No Dearth of Books. Sarah had turned damaged books into adorable bunny rabbits and hedgehogs! Librarians assured me that “No library books were harmed in the making of this art.” Smile.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Serving Gig Harbor & Tacoma

THE GIFT OF GIVING Local company blessed to be able to serve others. By Patty Hutchens. Guided by gratefulness and a desire to assist others, Gig Harbor resident Janet Vitcovich opened her business, A Blessing to Serve, in April 2010. Fast forward five years, and it is evident that many have been genuinely blessed by the compassionate care and service that A Blessing to Serve has brought to their lives. A Blessing to Serve provides transportation to and from medical and dental appointments, surgeries, the airport, train station and cruise lines, providing door-to-door service. Vitcovich will also take her clients shopping or do their shopping for them if they are homebound or simply prefer not to accompany her. But A Blessing to Serve is much more than a transportation service; Vitcovich offers personalized concierge service to each of her clients. She will take notes at medical and dental appointments, providing the family with peace of mind that they will receive complete medical updates and instructions for followup from their loved one’s visit. And as a retired customer service representative of United Airlines, Vitcovich is highly familiar with the airport and its procedures and will even assist a client through security to the gates. Vitcovich charges either by the hour or by the trip, depending upon where the customer lives and his or her destination. In addition,

she carries commercial high-risk insurance with coverage for each passenger of $1 million. “I’m also registered with the state with a business license and keep my first aid and AED (Automated External Defibrillators) certifications up to date,” said Vitcovich. Vitcovich loves the fact she is able to help others and is grateful for each of her clients, many of whom have become close friends. But her services are not limited to seniors or the disabled. She can pick up children at school and drive them home or to appointments, something that is not always feasible for working parents to do. A Blessing to Serve operates Monday through Saturday from 5am to 9pm and Sunday from noon to 5pm. Pre-arranged appointments are preferred, but Vitcovich can sometimes provide last minute transportation if needed. They are also available for transportation to and from the US Open at Chambers Bay. They ask that you call or email ahead.

have been members for 22 years. With a desire to give back to the community through more than her business, Vitcovich is a member of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Alliance of Women Owned Businesses (AWOB) and Health Care Providers Council (HCPC) of Pierce County. She also volunteers for the Maritime Parade through the Chamber, is on the membership committee with AWOB and serves as a committee member for the Alzheimer’s Conference that HCPC puts on each September. Vitcovich also gives of her time to the Gig Harbor Wine Festival, the Gig Harbor Film Festival, Relay for Life and the Altrussa Home Tour during the holidays. Her signature event in the community has been a program called “Thank You, Veterans;” a patriotic program to thank our veterans for their service, plus a fundraiser for a local veteran’s organization.

Vitcovich and her husband Dennis have called Gig Harbor home for nearly 25 years. Their two children are now grown with one living in Gig Harbor and the other in Tacoma.

In recognition of her devotion to the community, Janet was a finalist for Shining Star Award in May 2014 through her AWOB organization. And while she considers it a blessing to serve others, Vitcovich has clearly been a blessing to those in our community.

A faith-based company, Vitcovich said she attributes her success to her Lord Jesus Christ. She and Dennis are active at their church, Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church, where they

A couple of years ago Gig Harbor High School senior Tanner Stepp was simply burned out. His love for the game of soccer had faded, and he considered quitting. Thankfully, he listened to one of his mentors. “After a long talk with my Young Life leader, Patrick Kelly, I rediscovered my love for the game through his explanation of how God has given me such an incredible talent that it would be a shame to see it all go to waste,” said Tanner. “ Now, here I am preparing to go off to college and play at a top level.” In the fall, Tanner will join his brother Braden at Whitworth University in Spokane where the two will be reunited on the soccer field. After college Tanner said he will likely pursue a career in real estate. Tanner’s club soccer team, Washington Premier FC, has won several state titles, and Tanner is captain for the GHHS team this year. Tanner is dedicated to working hard both academically

and athletically, something he knows will ensure success. “You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don’t work hard then that will get you nowhere. about technique,” said Chance. Chance plans to attend a four-year university where he will major in business or marketing. And as he goes forward in life, he carries with him a philosophy that is sure to help him succeed. “Do not ever stop chasing your dreams. Make your dreams (your) goals. Set a plan and get to it. Even if it is hard, you have to push through it because at the end of pain is success,” said Chance.

Providing Exceptional Customer Service & Quality Products for over 20 years!

For Peninsula High School junior Chance Stolz, there is very little down time. As a member of the football, wrestling and track and field teams, he trains yearround. Add to that his participation in the Tacoma Community College running start program, and you wonder just how he does it all. “I will earn my associates degree by the time I graduate high school,” said Chance. In football last fall, Chance had over 130 tackles and was named second team all-league linebacker. But his success did not stop there. In wrestling he took third at the Washington State Mat Classic, finishing with 28-1 record for the season; his only loss was by two points to the state champion.

Help Literacy Blossom ANNUAL GARDEN TOUR BENEFITS LITERACY PROGRAMS IN THE COMMUNITY. BY PATTY HUTCHENS. PHOTO COURTESY GIG HARBOR GARDEN CLUB. Once you learn to read, you will be forever free. —Frederick Douglass It is something many of us take for granted — the ability to read. But for those who struggle with literacy, it is a lonely place. That is the reality for 32 million Americans. But there is something that can be done, and is being done, right here in our community to make sure we all do our part to help those who struggle each day with literacy.

Included as part of this year’s event is a talk by Dan Hinkley, an internationally known gardening celebrity, which will take place on the evening of Thursday, June 25 at 7:00pm at the Best Western Wesley Inn. Hinkley’s talk, titled “My Life in Plants: The First 60 Years,” promises to not only be informative, but humorous as well.

The Gig Harbor Garden Tour Association will hold its annual Garden Tour, a two-day event, June 27 from 10am to 5pm, and June 28 from 10am to 4pm, the proceeds of which will go towards literacy programs in our community. The self-guided tour will bring you to six residential gardens to see some of the most beautiful displays of gardens in our area. You will leave inspired and full of new ideas to implement in your own yard.

On June 28, Susan Goetz, a professional horticulturalist who owns the Urban Garden Company and Garden Design Studio in Tacoma, will also treat Garden Tour ticket holders to a presentation. She will give her talk at 2pm at the Uptown Ace Hardware and the title of her presentation is “The Herb Lover’s Garden.”

The self-guided tour will bring you to seven residential gardens to see some of the most beautiful displays of gardens in our area.

LIVINGLOCAL

Be sure to buy your ticket and enjoy not only beautiful gardens, but do your part to fund literacy programs in the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula area. Tickets to this year’s Garden Tour are $25. If you have a group of 10 or more, tickets are $20 per person. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to www.gigharborgardentour.org.

DID YOU KNOW? In the event of a disaster, International Medical Corps (IMC) deploys its emergency response teams quickly, saving many lives even in the most remote and challenging locations. Here is just a sample of the rapid responses they have had in recent years: • The Philippines Typhoon – IMC was on the ground in 24 hours. • Indonesia Tsunami – IMC was on the ground in 24 hours. • Japan Earthquake and Tsunami – IMC was on the ground in 48 hours. Since it first formed 31 years ago, IMC has assisted people in over 70 countries and has helped tens of millions of people. The emergency relief and training provided by IMC over the years is valued at $2 billion. IMC has a staff of over 7,800 people throughout the world.

“As an adventure seeker by nature, I’ve sought out expeditions and world travel for decades. My most memorable travel experiences include safariing in Tanzania, scuba diving off the coast of Zanzibar and summiting Mount Aconcagua in Argentina. Nothing cultivates the spirit of freedom more than leaving your comforts behind and discovering a new, beautiful place.” - Remi Drozd Destiny. Fate. Coincidence. Call it what you may, but I believe our experiences define who we are and shape the path that leads us to where we ultimately belong. For my brother, Remi Drozd, this couldn’t be more accurate. He has a quote from Alan Kay, an acclimated computer scientist, highlighted in his blog which sums up this thought, “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” What brought my brother to the heart of a world disaster, miles from the epicenter of a 7.8 magnitude Earthquake? It was the love for travel and adventure that delivered him there, and what he experienced was far more of an undertaking than he could possibly imagine. When the news first broke of the catastrophe, I was in shock like everyone else.

We did not hear from Remi for 24 hours — an eternity. During that time it was difficult not to fear the worst, but deep down I knew he was meant to be there and that his passion would soon serve the people of Nepal well. I remember when we were younger Remi would talk about his goal to someday be a doctor at the base camp of Mount Everest, and although it sounded intriguing, it put a pit of anxiety in my stomach. I never thought that fear would become such a reality. Remi has always explored his dichotomous type A/B personality. He knew he wanted to be a doctor at a young age, but he would not let that goal hinder his passion for adventure and love for the arts. He has

always been a dreamer, but unlike your stereotypical artist, Remi had the dedication to follow up on his wild ambitions. His love of art shines through his photography as he takes us on his experiences. His photos tell a story autonomously. Remi had this vision of who he wanted to be and could get there, while at the same time pursuing his hobbies and telling the story to the world through his lens. Remi began his medical training specializing in emergency medicine — a natural choice for his lifestyle of diverse interests. Before his mission abroad, Remi wrote in his blog, “Wilderness medicine has allowed me to take my practice to a new level – outside of the hospital.” And now he’s taken the medical training to an entirely new level with the experience of countless onsite rescues in Nepal. I have always known Remi to hunt for the next experience, so it was no surprise when he announced his plans to put his life as an emergency room doctor in Massachusetts on hold and to travel to Nepal. He casually mentioned this volunteer mission while we were in the car on the way to your atypical Thanksgiving of camping, canyoneering and hiking in Zion. I joked with my sister-in-law that this was now inevitable; he was going. Once Remi put his mind into a dream, it quickly manifested into an obsession, and he quickly put it into action. Three months after that seed was planted, Doctor Remi Drozd was en-route to Nepal to

the small town of Manang to volunteer as a doctor. On February 28, my brother embarked on the expedition of his dreams, satisfying his passion as a photographer, traveler and intellect as a doctor. His travels there alone would appear extreme to the average person, but to Remi it was only a path to his real experience. A 12-hour flight, eight-hour bus ride on bumpy dirt roads, followed by a seven-day hike delivered him to the 6,500-person village of Manang. At an altitude of 11,545 feet, it is situated on the broad valley of the Marshyangdi River to the north of the Annapurna mountain range. There are no roads, only trails where most heavy goods are transported on mule trains or carried by porters. The town is a frequent stop for travelers trekking the Annapurna who rest in Manang to acclimatize to the high altitude. And thus, this was the chosen location for an imperative lifesaving clinic as well as the destination of Remi’s Nepal endeavor. Only a few doctors work at the clinic on a volunteer basis through an organization called the Himalayan Rescue Association (www. himalayanrescue.org). It takes a few days to hike there from most neighboring towns, and it is one of the few locations the Nepali locals and out of town trekkers can seek out western medicine. The way this town was described to me felt as though it was straight out of a novel. According to Remi, the town is filled with the friendliest

people. He said it is surrounded by snowcapped mountains, has a flowing river and a sky so full of stars it appears milky. The sense of community is strong, and Remi quickly became closely acquainted with the shop owners and residents of Manang. He taught a class each morning on topics of high-altitude sicknesses and survival techniques. He was then open to see patients where he treated a spectrum of people from local youths who split their heads on a bike ride, to the seriously endangered trekkers suffering from various ailments. On Remi’s first day on the job he jumped right into action and treated a traveler with high altitude pulmonary edema. Remi describes his experience at this Himalayan clinic as the most rewarding experience of his career in medicine. He says the experience in Manang has been so gratifying because of the people’s appreciation

“Pursuing these endeavors has afforded me the opportunity to make the most positive impact on the world and my happiness.” for basic care. Some of the patients would travel days to get the care from a western doctor and sometimes arrive in critical condition. I think I may have to remind myself of this the next time I’m feeling an itch of impatience sitting in a doctor’s waiting room. Remi has many stories of meeting his patients earlier in his journey in the country, either as a travel companion or in one of his lectures, only to later find them at his clinic door in dire need of rescue. Remi and the team of doctors at the clinic were on call 24 hours a day seven days a week, but providing the daily care gave them the deepest satisfaction and was worth all the effort. Before the recent tragedy of the record-breaking earthquake, Nepal was most thought of for those beautifully dangerous peaks of Mount Everest. It is the iconic image that most people

52

recognize as the highest peak on earth, towering at 29,033 feet and growing each year from the collision of tectonic plates from which the mountain was formed. The April 25 earthquake that hit Nepal killed more than 8,000 people and injured more than 19,000. It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake. The recent earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least 19 making it the deadliest day on the mountain in history. In Remi’s words, “I have experienced some of the most devastating and heartbreaking events of my life. It’s hard to believe how cruel nature can be.” Hundreds of thousands of people were made

including some at the Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Patan Durbar Square and the Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Geophysicists and other experts had warned for decades that Nepal was vulnerable to a deadly earthquake, particularly because of its geology, urbanization and architecture (Wikipedia). Days after the earthquake, the organization Remi supports reached out to the International Medical Corp (IMC) to see if they needed help from a few acclimatized doctors. Remi explains, “The IMC has an affiliation with doctors from Massachusetts General Hospital and Stanford, but the combination of our location (already in Nepal) and our training was just the right combination for them to let us join the team. IMC is the largest American based emergency response service. In this situation, they were not working off of direct American government aid but from aid which civilians donated – people all over the world.” After Remi’s safety was confirmed and I knew he was working with an established organization, I could not help to think how in

a way this was a serendipitous coincidence. It was opportune that an emergency room doctor with a wilderness medicine degree arrived on a volunteer mission in Nepal a month before the tragic earthquake that devastated the country. To say I am proud of my brother would be a massive understatement. In the heart of this disaster, I am glad to know Remi followed his passion, survived the earthquakes and is now putting his talents to use in a time these people need it most. The greatest reward may still be his own as he notes the deep satisfaction that comes from serving others. “Pursuing these endeavors has afforded me the opportunity to make the most positive impact on the world and my happiness.” The IMC remains in Nepal providing aid to those whose devastation has just begun. If you would like to help make a difference, you may make a donation and find out more information at internationalmedicalcorps.org.

Sarong Simplicity THE ONE PIECE THAT SUPPORTS A MULTITUDE OF LOOKS.

BY SARAH POLYAKOV.

A simple piece of fabric, which lent itself to being tied in multiple ways, served as the foundation for the most ancient pieces of clothing. In India, women have worn saris for thousands of years. In ancient Greece, women and men wore togas. In ancient Rome, women added a second piece of fabric to the outside of their toga, and this was called a stola. And in Hawaii and Tahiti, women wore sarongs as their daily outfit up until 100 years ago. Although almost every culture has worn different kinds of beautifully tied and layered fabric, it all originated from the same thing: a simple piece of square fabric with no buttons, zippers or even print. Much like the people of these ancient cultures, you can see modern women at the beach wearing the same type of garment; only we know the sarong simply as the utilitarian beach cover-up. What I love about beach cover-ups is that you can wear them in so many different ways, whether you are at the pool or on a sandy beach lazing the day away. This season’s beach cover-ups, which are made from different types of fabrics, come in all shades and often feature exciting and colorful patterns. But they need not only be worn tied around the waist. Longer ones can be tied to look like breezy maxi-dresses. Shorter ones can be assembled to look like a knee-length skirt. Finally, medium sized ones can be tied at the waist and worn long like a maxi skirt.

LIVINGLOCAL

WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM JUNE 2015

For the summer of 2015, designers are redefining the notion of beach cover-ups altogether. This summer, you will find coverups that have been delicately crocheted, others that are gauzy with vibrant tropical prints; or they can be found in traditional florals, and even mesh for those not worried about getting too much sun. Several designers have gone even further and are making beach cover-ups that could almost double as sundresses. Other designers are turning cover-ups into ponchos. My favorite cover-up this season looks as if it was borrowed from an ancient Egyptian princess. Designed to look a little like a maxi skirt, the fabric hangs in various flowing sections from a brightly embellished waistband decorated with beading and embroidery. Of course, even amid all of the embellishments and new designs, there are still plenty of practical and no-fuss beach cover-ups available. These should be staples of every woman’s summer wardrobe because they wash and dry in minutes, can be dressed up or dressed down, belted, tied and worn short or long. But the best part is they can stand up to sea and sand and have the ability to be tucked away to take up little room in a suitcase. Viva la sarong!

FAMILY

UNIQUE AND ECLECTIC Local store a family tradition! By Patty Hutchens. It is a decades-long tradition, and not just for Gig Harbor’s Schmidtke family, but for the community and beyond. The Beach Basket Gift Shop first opened in 1969, and 46 years later it is still owned and operated by members of the Schmidtke family and visited by many locals and tourists. Located in a historic sawmill, The Beach Basket Gift Shop offers a fabulous selection of gifts for women, children and men as well as nauticalthemed merchandise. Over the years it has expanded as their customers have returned time and time again praising them for the eclectic selection of women’s sportswear, gifts, cards, souvenirs, garden-related products and much more. “One of the comments we hear most is that we have something for everyone,” said Kim Stokke, the daughter of owners Julian and Leslie Schmidtke. Stokke and her brother, Mike Schmidtke, serve as co-managers of the store. Owners Julian and Leslie have put their heart and soul into building their business. They worked hard searching for a variety of quality merchandise, creating attractive displays. “We have always strived to carry merchandise that was a bit different by searching for new and unique items,” shared Stokke. If you are looking for unique clothing that will not be found anywhere else, The Beach Basket is where you will want to visit.

“Our clothing area carries casual sportswear by companies not found in the big box stores,” said Stokke. “You won’t see yourself coming and going. We have scarves, jewelry, purses and sandals.” Also part of their popular business is The Christmas Shop, a year round store that is housed in a three-story home previously occupied by a family that owned the sawmill. The Christmas Shop carries German made nutcrackers, pyramids and ornaments. Other collectibles featured are Byers Carolers, Jim Shore, Possible Dreams, Willowtree, Dept. 56 Villages and Snowbabies and Fontanini Nativities. “Around every corner is a tree decorated in a different theme. Some of our most popular are sports, pets, hobbies, wine, mermaids, boats, peacock and wildlife,” said Stokke. For over 30 years, The Christmas Shop has hosted Santa for a weekend during the holidays. It is a delight as children receive an ornament and can visit with Santa to reveal to him all that is on their list. And because this free event has become so popular, they now host Santa at the museum so more people can enjoy this tradition. Remaining successful through economic ups and downs over nearly five decades is not an easy task for any business, but Stokke said they attribute their success to the support of the Gig Harbor community as well as visitors who come from all over the globe. “The Christmas

Shop has particularly become a destination spot,” said Stokke, adding that they have many customers who have become friends over the years. Children who used to come in with Grandma now return to pick out that special ornament with their children. Stokke and her family are also grateful to their dedicated employees, some of whom have worked for them over 20 years. “They have worked hard to create an atmosphere where customers feel welcomed, appreciated and able to have an experience, not just go shopping.” With a desire to support the community that has helped them succeed, the employees at The Beach Basket Gift Shop and The Christmas Store are involved in a number of charitable activities. The stores also support local charities and schools by donating merchandise or gift certificates for auctions. Be sure to stop in and visit them today!

COVER STORY CAR ENTHUSIASTS UNITE! Hobby brings memories and friendships. By Melissa Mullan.

Restoration and care for vintage and classic cars is not a new phenomenon. For decades, car enthusiasts have been taking care of these mobile pieces of art and showing them off to people all over. Even those who are not enthusiasts often enjoy admiring the cars and the history they have to offer. For those of us who have never dabbled in this timeless hobby, I wanted to get insight on what the big deal was. Ranging from vintage to new, car enthusiasts can be found all over. But what is it that makes cars so interesting? Why do so many Washingtonians find cars so intriguing? In order to best answer this I sought out some of our local restoration experts: The Northwest Alfa Romeo Club. According to members of the local chapter of the Alfa Romeo Club, it is more than just the cars. Having a hobby that you can share with fellow members creates a unity, just like a family, and forms a bond that lasts a lifetime. Story after story, the members shared how having the cars brought them closer to others. By sharing a common interest, they can chat about for hours. One member even mentioned how he was able to become more involved in his hobby because the other members offer information, tools, tips and answers. Members of this club recently came from Oregon, Washington and Canada to meet up in Ellensburg, Washington. From there,

Tips to Keep You Healthy

It’s Not You… IT’S EVERYONE.

BY TERESA PESCE.

This column is dedicated to the middle-aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older,” acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. Some women think their middleage weight and shape changes are the result of childbirth. Actually, the menopausal 10-pack some of us now carry has little to do with that. You tend to get it whether you have given birth or not! Sorry, but that’s the GOOD news. Go ahead and blame a few grey hairs on your progeny, but your avoidance of turning sideways when wearing a straight skirt? That rounded profile will happen whether you’ve had children or not. (And they tried to slip it past us, but allow me to point out that although we can’t “spot reduce,” we can now “spot gain!” Boo! Hiss! Denial, denial, denial! To whom do

LIVINGLOCAL

I write my scathing letter of angst?) So if that was the good news, what’s the bad news? Well, you know the parts of a woman’s body often described as “pert”? In middle age, they become victims of the Great Estrogen Escape. According to www.healthline.com, “Aging Changes in the Breast” by April Kahn: “One of the main causes of aging changes in the breasts is a natural decline of the female reproductive hormone estrogen. This reduced amount of estrogen causes the skin to become dry, making it less elastic. With less elasticity, the breasts lose firmness and

69

fullness and develop a stretched and saggy appearance.” Or, as described in “Breast Changes — Should I Be Concerned” at www.bidmc.org:“[During menopause] …your hormone levels drop and your breast tissue becomes less dense and more fatty.” Or, in laywomen’s terms, breasts go from a taut salute to saggy bags of jiggle. Great. Just great. Are you kidding me? Firmness fades. Gravity wins. Will exercising the supporting muscles return your breasts to their former glory? It will help, of course, but aging is inexorable. Why even put this wretched information in print? To spare you any self-blame or shame and to reveal that some experiences have nothing to do with your will-power or your commitment to looking great. After the age of 45, losing weight is tough because, according to Dr. Bravata of Stanford University, “The reality is that if you eat and exercise the same amount, you’ll still put on weight in perimenopause and menopause.” Sorry, but this means that even if you are a wise food consumer and consistent exerciser, you’ll have to step it up in both areas to counteract your lower metabolism.

“Women have a lower metabolism after menopause, and the lack of estrogen also may cause cravings for carbs and fats.” I’ve heard of stacking the deck, but this is ridiculous! Women get a lower metabolism at the exact time they’re programmed to crave carbs and fats?! Remember Ann-Margaret warbling, “How Lovely to be a Woman” in the musical “Bye-Bye Birdie”? In instances like this, I beg to differ. Well, we can succumb to despair or we can adjust. (Or we can dunk an entire package of Oreos in a glass of milk. Wait — no! Don’t do that!) Why am I imparting all this depressing information? Because I want you to know it’s not YOU; it’s the global feminine experience. It’s not your imagination or your fault. “The Change” means our eating and exercise habits will also have to change, just to maintain the status quo. To improve the status quo, they’ll have to change even more! Is this just the most unfair thing ever? Yes. But none of us is alone in this. Even model goddess Christie Brinkley says she is amazed at how much more effort she must expend to maintain what she has always had. And as for the “girls” ~ here’s a special hint because I love you guys: Go to www.shopcoobie.com and check out what many consider to be the most comfortable bra on planet Earth.

Just Adjust Well, we can succumb to despair or we can adjust.

BELOW What path will you take as you grow older?

It gets worse. Seattle health coach Jennifer Lovejoy explains,

The reality is that if you eat and exercise the same amount, you’ll still put on weight in perimenopause and menopause. RIGHT Our bodies hold us accountable.

Can Walking Reduce Cavities? THE ANSWER IS YES!

BY DR. RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS.

Are you a stress eater? I can be, especially in the evening hours. For me, it’s peanut M&M’s. Yumm! But do the high carbohydrate foods and fat really give you a few minutes of happiness? We might think so, but according to Dr. Michael Rolzen with the Wellness Clinic at the Cleveland Clinic, when you’re really stressed, your brain craves action. The “action” is the process of getting up and grabbing the bag of chips or sweets, plus munching it. The problem is the repeated behavior changes the brain wiring to recognize this action as your automatic response to stress. A new habit develops in your habit-forming brain center known as the basal ganglia. In his book, “The Power of Habit,” Charles Duhigg says “As soon as a behavior becomes automatic, the decision making part of your brain goes into a sleep mode of sorts. In fact, the brain starts working less and less. The brain can almost completely shut down. ... And that’s because of the capacity of the basal ganglia in your brain: to take a behavior and turn it into an automatic routine.” Studies have shown that people will perform automated behaviors — like pulling out of a driveway or brushing teeth — the same way every single time if they’re in the same environment. You can’t change a habit, but you can layer on a new habit over the old one.

What you need is a cue, a new routine and a reward. You can replace the stress-eating habit with one that gives your brain an action and a high, without loading up on calories. The answer? Walking. Even a short 10 to 15 minute walk can reduce cravings. My cue that I’m stressed (or bored) is reaching for the M&M bowl. Yes, I’m a dentist, and I know that repetitive, frequent sugar intake increases my risk for cavities. But I still do it. It’s a habit. First step: The cue. You reach for the M&M bowl. Habits can be good or bad for us. Make the old reward difficult to achieve. Get rid of the M&M bowl. Or if your tendency is to plop down on the couch after work and pick up the remote control, take the batteries out and stick them in the freezer. Second step: A change in the routine. When you plop down and click the remote control, (and say a mental “huh?”), you’ll remember where they are. The additional difficulty of getting up, going to the freezer and inserting the batteries are the change. Third step: The reward. Replace the repetitive couch potato or M&M behavior with a walk. The action of the walk then becomes the reward. Habits can be good or bad for us. Frequent sugar intake can cause cavities, even if a person has the best hygiene in the world.

Shoulder Pain HOW CHIROPRACTIC CARE CAN PROVIDE RELIEF. BY SUSAN HOFFMAN.

Most of us have experienced shoulder pain at some point in our life, and many times the causes might be obvious — poor sleeping positions, heavy lifting, carrying backpacks or even lifting weights at the gym. Like most situations that involve an injury or chronic pain, the sooner it is treated the better chance you have at a full recovery. When you go to your chiropractor for evaluation of shoulder pain, your entire musculoskeletal system will be examined to help determine if it is bone, arthritis or soft tissue related. The chiropractor may also make adjustments to the spine to confirm that nerves going to the shoulder are functioning correctly and that normal range of motion is restored. Prior to your visit, you may have tried to relieve your discomfort with heat, ice and rest. But after your visit to your clinician, you will be provided with more treatments, which might include ultrasound as well as stretching and strengthening exercises. Other helpful options will be ensuring correct positioning while sleeping, proper ergonomic sitting at the computer, and appropriate carrying of heavy objects to minimize strain to the muscles and joints that are part of the shoulder complex. Dr. Karen Erickson, a chiropractor, will at times order an x-ray or another diagnostic test, such as an EMG or an MRI, as a follow up to her examination. She explains that “In my practice we treat a lot of shoulder problems, and many of them are garden

72

LIVINGLOCAL

variety shoulder strains that respond well to conservative care. But I also manage patients that have severe shoulder injuries such as torn rotator cuffs, and in these cases I actually work with orthopedists who are shoulder specialists to co-manage these patients,” said Erickson. “These may be patients that don’t actually require surgery or aren’t surgical candidates for one reason or another. But the care I give them can really make them more comfortable and can manage their pain so that they can avoid surgery.” This exemplifies the importance of a team approach where the chiropractor and the other clinicians work together. After all, a patient who receives the best care for each situation may be able to lessen their need for surgery. It will also maximize the healing process and restore the patient to a pain-free status with renewed full range of motion so they may function with normal daily activities. Like with so many issues that involve the complaint of pain, it is important to seek care soon rather than wait or suffer. Any pain that persists beyond a few days deserves treatment. Before doing any self-treatments, a diagnosis is essential so an appropriate treatment plan can be designed for your condition. Most of us know that you might begin with rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medications to help relieve the pain. But in addition to the home therapies, seeking chiropractic care is an important step in preventing recurrent and chronic problems.

The Danger Zones AVOID FOOD POISONING AND INTESTINAL DISTRESS. BY GLORIA GILBÉRE, CDP, DA HOM, PHD, DSC, ECOERGONOMIST, WHOLISTIC REJUVENIST, HTMA PRACTITIONER. Warm weather or travel aren’t the only ways to become a victim of intestinal distress — just ask any victim of food poisoning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 48 million foodborne illnesses occur annually; 128,000 people are hospitalized, and 3,000 people die after eating contaminated food. All activities involving food are potential intestinal health saboteurs because when not adequately refrigerated or cooked, bacteria forms quickly — even on leftovers at home. Avoid “Danger Zones” Bacteria multiply rapidly between 40 degrees and 140 degrees Fahrenheit (all temperatures noted are Fahrenheit). Keep food out of the danger zone by maintaining hot food hot and cold food cold. Below are some guidelines to follow: • Cook food to 160 degrees (145 degrees for roasts, steaks, beef, veal and lamb chops). • Refrigerate food at 40 degrees or below. • Freeze food at 0 degrees or below. • Keep HOT cooked food at 140 degrees. • Reheat cooked food at 165 degrees. • Important: Refrigerate or freeze leftovers immediately after preparation — separate large amounts into small, shallow containers for quicker cooling. • Always marinate food in the refrigerator. • Never defrost food at room temperature — defrost in the refrigerator. • Don’t overstuff the refrigerator – cold air MUST be able to circulate to keep food safe. • Your refrigerator should be kept between 35 degrees and 40 degrees to prevent foodborne bacteria. • Always keep food preparation separate AND disinfect all cutting surfaces, sponges and utensils using a solution of 2 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide or unscented bleach for every two quarts of HOT water. Soak for a minimum of 15 minutes and rinse well. I only use nonporous boards and labeled mine: “meat”, “veggie”, “poultry” and “fish.” You can use the same solution with cold water for washing fruits and vegetables before cooking.

The following steps I’ve used and recommended to clients for over 30 years with great success. • At the first sign of digestive distress (food poisoning, diarrhea, nausea, sudden flu-like symptoms, etc.) immediately take 1 tablespoon of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar. Using this food as medicine is effective because it quickly alkalizes the body, and bacteria cannot thrive in an alkaline environment. Repeat every 15 minutes for at least three doses, until symptoms subside. The doses can be taken straight or in water. To sweeten, ONLY use a natural sweetener like Stevia, never sugar or artificial sweeteners. • After taking the dose of cider vinegar, take a strong probiotic. Healthenhancing microorganisms help our body fight health-depleting “bugs” creating intestinal distress or worse. I use at least 100 billion per capsule for adults, 2 to 4 billion for children under age 12. Continue the probiotic for at least seven days. • The USDA recommends washing your hands, including scrubbing under your nails, under hot water and soap for a minimum of 20 seconds after handling raw food, using the restroom, blowing your nose, shaking hands, etc. Dr. Gilbére is Founder/CEO Institute for Wholistic Rejuvenation, an author, talk show host, and creator of eight post-graduate courses. She consults worldwide via telephone/Skype and in Gig Harbor. Visit: www.gloriagilbere. com or call 888.352.8175. * Download a FREE flier on tips to stay healthy. Pull Out the BBQ HELPFUL TIPS FOR GRILLING SEASON. BY COLIN ANDERSON.

If you’re not one to hover over the grill during our often frigid winter days and wet and windy spring, then you’re probably just getting back into summer grilling mode. The days are longer and milder and outdoor meals are happening. Now is the time to get your grills and your skills ready for a long summer of sizzle.

hickory and mesquite all bring different tastes. Simply choose the wood you would like to use and place it in a pie pan or wrap in tinfoil. This prevents the wood from burning too hot and allows you to control how much smoke is in the grill.

Cleaning If your grill sat uncovered, or you didn’t give it a thorough cleaning last fall, it’s in need of a touch-up. Heavy duty wire brushes will do the job but they can also be harmful.

Generally speaking, the lower temperature and more time you take grilling, the juicier and better tasting your meat will be. High quality cuts of meat will flare up, so searing each side is a good method to prevent a burnt outside with a raw interior.

“Brushes can sometimes strip away the coating and oils,” said Tim Branen, owner of Tim’s Special Cut Meats in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. “I get the grill hot and then rub the grates with crumpled tin foil.”

“I sear the meat a few minutes on each side and then go real low,” said Branen. “Once it’s seared, turn half the grill off and put the meat on that side of the grill, then cook to the doneness you prefer.”

Charcoal vs. Gas

Seasoning

“Charcoal is more time consuming, but the flavor is much better than gas,” said Branen.

A good cut of meat needs very little seasoning. Salt, pepper and garlic will go a long way. If you do use a rub, make sure it pairs with any sauce you plan to use. Check the main ingredients for similarities, and you’ll be much happier with the results.

Natural lump charcoal provides great flavoring for those who prefer it over gas. If you’re like many and use a propane grill, there are a few ways to add additional flavor. Adding wood chips will enrich the flavor of the meat. Varieties such as apple wood, cherry wood,

With summer almost here, we tend to steer away from the comfort foods of winter and fill our refrigerators with fresh fruit and vegetables. The farmers markets are opening this month, offering us a great opportunity to choose from locally grown food, which will not only benefit our bodies but our local economy as well. A fresh salad does not have to be simply a starter to a great meal — it can be the meal. With so many fresh vegetables to choose from, it can be filling and satisfying. Add some protein to your salad in the way of chicken, steak or salmon to make sure you are receiving a balanced meal. Looking for a healthy snack? Certain fruits allow conscientious eaters to fill up without filling out. For example, watermelon is 92 percent water — so it’s hydrating and satiating without the disadvantage of fat or cholesterol. And remember to always eat breakfast. Try incorporating fruit into your morning routine by combining fruit with low-fat yogurt and topping off your whole grain cereal with some fresh strawberries. It’s a great way to start your day!

Thank goodness (for) island fun. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos by San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau, San Juan Nature Institute and Jim Maya.

Doesn’t a trip to an exotic island sound wonderful? You know the type of island I mean. The kind of island where the pace of life is slow, the scenery is picture perfect, and all you have to do is kick off your shoes and relax? Maybe you want to head to an island where the natural world abounds, but you can always pop in to town for a plate of freshly prepared sushi. The great news is you don’t have to head to Hawaii or even to the Caribbean to have a phenomenal island experience. All you have to do is head to Friday Harbor on the Washington coast and use it as a starting point to live out all your island dreams. Named by Spanish explorer Francisco De Eliza, the San Juan Islands are accessible by car or walk on ferry, private boat or seaplane. One year, my husband and I had the opportunity to go to the San Juans via seaplane. We loved that besides it being affordable, it was quite a unique and scenic adventure. We loved the idea of being able to take off from and land on the water. We also loved the particularly scenic route that was taken by the seaplane. And like a boat, the seaplane arrived in the bay and pulled right up to the dock where yachts were moored. The best part about the San Juans is that one

can find something for everyone. Friday Harbor is overflowing with quaint shops and wonderful restaurants. But that is where the fun just begins. Starting in Friday Harbor, there are self-led various biking tours of all lengths and for most ability levels. On bike or by car, you may be delighted to see lighthouses and rocky bays, fields of lavender, forests of pine and fir where gentle deer abound. If you look closely, you might even see one of the island’s many shy foxes. Then, there are the real stars of the show: the island’s resident and transient orca whales. During the summer, you might catch a glimpse of these gentle giants, with a baby in tow, lolling around the bays and feeding. Although there are commercial whale watching tours, I would argue that they are best viewed from a small sailboat or kayak. If you want to get away from it all, head over to the almost horseshoe shaped Orcas Island. Moran State Park and its many waterfalls, woodlands and lakes will delight you. The island contains lodging for every taste and budget as well as different restaurants. Of course, the island also offers a variety of outdoor activities, both on sea and on land. Finally, you can head over to Lopez Island if you would like to have a cycling friendly vacation.

LIVINGLOCAL

A well-known custom on Lopez Island is for folks to wave at every cyclist, pedestrian or motorist with whom they come into contact. Of course, there is always Lopez village where you may spend the day reading a good book or shopping. Around the island, there are various

beaches with tide pools or beaches where you can view seals and sea lions. The San Juan Islands offer something for everyone. But the best news is you don’t have to travel far or spend thousands of dollars to find your own little slice of paradise.
