We turn on the television only to witness news reports of hopelessness and despair. War. Violence. Homelessness. Drug abuse. But it does not have to be that way. We are now in the Lenten season and eagerly anticipating the approach of Easter. The season of hope and renewal. After all, Easter, as the celebration when Jesus was resurrected, is the symbol of ultimate hope in the Christian world. Hope is defined as a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Some may argue that this can lead to discouragement if our expectations are not met. But stop to think about it. Where would we be without hope? Where would the man who has become known as the American Sniper, Chris Kyle, have been without hope? While his life ended tragically, he was able to battle back from the hopelessness and despair he suffered while serving our country. In his recovery, he was able to help many others find hope as well. We do not have to look far to see how we can help others find the hope they so desire. During the Lenten season, many talk about sacrificing things they love. But why not try something different. Sacrifice your time. Take an hour or two a week and volunteer at a local organization that may need help. There are plenty of them right here in our own community. There are many elderly people who may have lost hope in the later years of their lives. Make it a point to visit with some of them. It will give them renewed hope.
Erin Shawbell
One thing that makes our community so unique is people’s willingness to help one another. So whether you lend a hand to an elderly person at the grocery store, volunteer for a few hours at a soup kitchen or just smile a little more at passers-by, know that you are helping spread the Good News of the Easter season – hope!

Rising Stars A rare opportunity to observe Olympians and future paddling stars in action. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos courtesy of Lynette Field and Sarah Polyakov.
The community of Gig Harbor hosts many amazing sporting events throughout the year. This year, community members will have a unique opportunity to be participants or spectators in the 4th annual Gig Harbor Paddlers Cup competitive racing event.
and enthusiasts who are using human-powered craft, such as kayaks, rowboats, canoes, sculls or paddleboards; in addition Corporate Dragon Boat Races and 100m sprints. To date, the City of Gig Harbor, Java & Clay and Tickled Pink will be participating in the Dragon Boat Race.
Whether a participant or a spectator, you will be treated to some of the best human-powered watercraft racing in the world. Some of the athletes have won awards internationally, and our sprint kayaking team from Gig Harbor is known worldwide. This event, which is being held at Skansie Brothers Park on April 11th and 12th, has something for paddling athletes and enthusiasts alike.
There will also be an opportunity for our community to learn about the sport on Saturday evening at the Harbor History Museum. There will be music, food, films about the history of the club and a small silent auction. The auction benefits the GH racing team athletes who qualify to compete in international events. The trials to qualify for international competition is in April in Oklahoma City.
On Saturday, athletes will have the chance to participate in the Harbor Challenge. For competitive and recreational paddlers, the Harbor Challenge will take place inside the harbor and includes 200m sprints, a Team Boat Challenge as well as distance races of 10k and 5k.
The founder of this event, Coach Alan Anderson, originated the Gig Harbor Canoeing Kayak Racing Team in 2002 under a 501(c)(3) corporation. His original goal was to assist Gig Harbor youth in being represented in paddling competitions in the U.S. and abroad. Coach Alan has trained many youth to qualify for national and international competitions. He recently brought our U.S. paddling team to Moscow. Over the years, the club has expanded and now includes the annual paddlers cup.
Coach Alan has also worked with Meghan Blanc, a local Gig Harbor teen. Alan taught her how to kayak, and she has since become the fourth in the world in Moscow and the second in the world in Germany.
Coach Alan has recently developed a heart for youth with disabilities. Five years ago,
But, he also an overarching heart for our community. He wants community members
On Sunday, athletes will have the opportunity to participate in the Heritage Classic, where top finishers receive prizes. Paddlers begin at Jerisich dock in Gig Harbor and make the eight-mile round trip to Point Defiance and back. The Heritage Classic is open to athletes

he decided to focus on para-athletes. He has been instrumental in providing camps for disabled athletes and this is the third year he has prepared athletes from around the country for racing. Alan has been leading the nation in his endeavor to get para-athletes out on the water and presented at racing events. Next year, at the para-Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, this sport will be introduced for the first time. Recently, a young man named Danzig (Ziggy) Norberg moved from Minnesota to train with Alan. Born with spina bifida, Ziggy has lived his life in a wheelchair and only has use of his upper body.
Such dedication takes a lot of time and effort. But Alan’s reasons are simple. He takes tremendous pleasure in helping young athletes build confidence and have fun traveling the world and racing in intense competitions.

Alan has been leading the nation in his endeavor to get para-athletes out on the water and presented at racing events. to be able to see these races, but most importantly, to encourage them to join in. He believes everyone can benefit from being involved with human-powered water sports. Most of all, he encourages everyone with a seaworthy human-powered watercraft to join in the race and the festivities. This year’s racing events promise to be more exciting than ever. The NorthWest Marine Trade Association is sponsoring a series of five different SUP races. The SUP portion of the race will bring stand-up paddle boarders from Washington and Oregon. There will be a ‘superbowl’ of sorts for winners, and they will go on to compete at this year’s Seafair. It’s an honor that Gig Harbor has been chosen to be part of this year’s Seafair festivities. Next year, Olympian Amanda Beard hopes to sponsor an open-water swim in conjunction
Of course, none of this would be possible without the tremendous support of our community, local businesses and sponsors. The City of Gig Harbor is among the largest supporters of this event. Other sponsors include Dr. Justin PIaseki, the event’s Platinum Sponsor for the last three years, Timberline Bank, the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, Umqua Bank, Gig Harbor Home Real Estate and Dr. Kim Rioux. More sponsors are in the process of signing up. Coach Alan and Missy Hill, Development/ Event Director, hope to see you at this year’s Paddlers Cup as either a participant or a spectator. Small Claims Basics UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS OF SMALL CLAIMS COURT.
BY ATTORNEY RICHARD PATRICK.
Our State court system is built in layers, similar to a cake. The most basic court is at the bottom, and the Washington State Supreme Court at the top. Generally, we move up this judicial ladder as our case becomes more complex and unique in legal question(s). The first level is Small Claims Court (SCC). This is a court of “limited jurisdiction, designed for disputes between individuals limited to $5,000 or less. Examples include neighborhood disputes, consumer problems, landlord/tenant matters and small collections. Attorneys are not allowed in Small Claims actions, except with permission of the judge. The filing fee to start a Small Claims action in Pierce County is $29. Check with your local court or online for specific rules, fees and standardized forms. After you file a Small Claims action, you must have the other party served with the legal papers by someone other than yourself. A declaration of service must be filed with the court, completed by the person that served the other party. This ensures that the court has proof that the other party has notice of the dispute. Your Small Claims action cannot move forward without proof of service filed with the court.
small claims cases in Pierce County are settled at mediation. If mediation is unsuccessful, a trial is scheduled. Witnesses and relevant documents that prove facts in your case are allowed at trial. The Judge will render a verdict. If damages (money) are awarded, the court will enter a judgment. If you are the party that initiated the action and you are the prevailing party, you are entitled to reimbursement of the filing fee and the cost of serving the other party. Pierce County has a mandatory mediation hearing prior to a trial. This hearing is an effort to resolve the matter without the necessity of a trial. It is required as a prerequisite to a trial. No mediation hearing = no trial. Seventy-five percent of the

The Power of a Clear Vision
Matt walked into the lobby, hockey bag over his shoulder, with a smile that lit up the room. It’d been over 30 minutes since he’d been on the ice, but his hands shook slightly; he was still filled with adrenaline. Matt’s passion for the game was contagious. He was 20 years old, and he’d worked hard to attain his prowess in the rink. We left for a nearby restaurant, eager to talk about the game and relive it through his eyes.
LIVE THE LIFE YOU LOVE.
We’re happiest when we’re creating what we truly want in life and going out to get it - authentically, compassionately and consciously. This includes our relationships, health, career goals, time and money freedom, spiritual life and how we give to others. Our vision is essential for creating ongoing joy and childlike excitement.
BY DEBORAH OLIVE.
Like Matt, we are designed to connect with our passion and live a life we love. Everything is created twice: first, in mind, then in form. Whether it’s the chair you’re sitting on or the outfit you selected to wear – it was first a clear image in someone’s mind. Creating and holding a vision takes effort however.
Life Coaching “To activate your vision, you must first be clear about the life you want to design.”

to use our sense of practicality more and let our imagination diminish. In time, we can lose sight of our vision and what we truly want. Our younger selves were tuned into what we wanted. Close your eyes and think about the first things you remember wishing for as a child. What did you want for your birthday or the holidays when you were eight or nine? For me, it was a guitar. I imagined myself playing it and singing with friends. I’ll always remember the excitement I felt when it was finally mine! Today, when you think of your vision or dream, what comes to mind? I’ve heard responses that include: “I just want to be happy.” “My to do list is waaay too long. Why would I add something else?” “Hmmm. I haven’t thought about my vision for a long time.” “I’m growing my business.” I also come across people whose whole demeanor says, “I love my life,” and who smile and enthusiastically share his or her vision. The Law of Specificity says, “To activate your vision, you must first be clear about the life you want to design.” Many make the mistake of being too general. “I want to be financially secure.” “I want to be happy.” They expect

circumstances to occur in a way that makes them happy without knowing what that means. Would an architect know how to draw you a “beautiful house?” The architect would look at you and say, “You’ve got to tell me what you mean by ‘beautiful house’. You’ve got to describe it in detail so I can draw you a blueprint. Would you like a modern kitchen or a French country kitchen? One bathroom or five?” When you decide with crystal clarity what you really want and envision every detail of the life you want to bring into existence, you give yourself access to the same reservoir of creativity and imagination used by famous inventors such as Thomas Edison or Steve Jobs. Give yourself the gift of a one-day Vision Workshop, and have fun while being skillfully guided to clarify your vision. Shaped from the inside and not outer circumstances, you’ll walk away with a vision blueprint that provides a clear roadmap for the life you love in the coming months.

Tax season is here, and you’ve probably been looking at all the paperwork and wondering, “how long do I need to keep this stuff?” Well, it isn’t as long as you think!
If you aren’t saving bills / statements, verify that you can request records from a service provider for at least three years after you close your account, just in case you need a statement.
The IRS says:
You should normally keep records relating to property until at least three years after you sell or otherwise dispose of the property.
“You must keep your records as long as they may be needed for the administration of any provision of the Internal Revenue Code. Generally, this means you must keep records that support items shown on your return until the period of limitations for that return runs out.” Need more clarity?

Women May Face Extra Challenges in Seeking Financial Security
Make Your Financial Future a Priority.
ARTICLE FOR USE BY EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR ERIN ABRIGO OF GIG HARBOR.
On March 8, we observe International Women’s Day. On this occasion, thousands of events across the world will honor the cultural, political and social achievements of women. Of course, in many countries, women still face significant economic challenges. And even here in the United States, women encounter more obstacles than men in the pursuit of financial security, particularly in seeking a comfortable retirement lifestyle. So if you are a woman — regardless of your marital status — you will need to be aware of these challenges and take steps to overcome them. Let’s consider a few of these challenges and some possible solutions: Challenge: Women spend more time out of the workforce and accumulate less money in 401(k) plans. Women spend an average of 12 years out of the workforce caring for children or elderly parents, compared with less than two years for men, according to the Social Security Administration. This time away from work can translate into less money in retirement plans — in fact, women’s average 401(k) balance is only about two-thirds as large as men’s, according to a study by Fidelity Investments. Potential solution: Take full advantage of your 401(k) and IRA. Your caregiving obligations are an issue to be decided by you, your spouse and perhaps other family members. But while you are working, contribute as much as you possibly can to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan. Also, try to fully fund your IRA each year. Challenge: Women typically live more years in retirement and depend more heavily on Social Security. Women reaching age 65 are expected to live, on average, an additional 21.6 years, compared with 19.3 years for men, according to the Social Security Administration, which also reports that
the average annual Social Security income received by women 65 years and older was about $12,500. Furthermore, Social Security comprises about 50% of the total income for unmarried women age 65 and older, compared to just 36% for elderly men. Potential solution: To become less dependent on Social Security, create a sustainable withdrawal strategy for your investment portfolio. Social Security was designed to supplement one’s retirement income, not replace it. Consequently, it’s essential that you make full use of your other sources of income, such as your 401(k), IRA and other investment accounts. To make this money last, you’ll need to create a sustainable withdrawal strategy early in your retirement — and stick to it. Challenge: Women are far more likely than men to need some type of long-term care. More than two-thirds of nursing home residents are women, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. And the average cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $87,000 per year, according to the 2014 Cost of Care Survey produced by Genworth, a financial services company. Typically, Medicare covers only a small percentage of these costs. Potential solution: Prepare in advance for long-term care expenses. Long-term care costs can be enormous, but you do have some protection-related options for meeting these costs. Check with your financial advisor to learn which of these choices might be most appropriate for your situation. These aren’t the only financial issues facing women, but they do give you a good idea of what you may be facing. So, be proactive in meeting these challenges — because there’s actually a lot you can do.

Integrated Design AN OBJECT SEEN IN ISOLATION FROM THE WHOLE IS NOT THE REAL THING. BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS.
The building industry has many buzz words and phrases that you may recognize like “green design” and “sustainability.” You may have also heard “integrated design, integrative design or integrated project delivery.” If these phrases are unfamiliar, let me assure you they won’t be for long. Integrated design is a collaborative method for designing a building. This holistic process involves a “whole building design” approach. A building, much like an organism, requires all systems to work together in harmony. This design approach creates buildings that support and improve the health of their occupants and the environment. According to the United States Green Building Council, “seventy percent of environmental impacts are made during the first ten percent of the design process.” While this subject might not rock your world, if you don’t know about it, you lose the opportunity to use it. Integrated design requires forethought. Design needs more time in the early stages to save time and money in the later stages. Conventional building design, residential and commercial, involves a
22

hand-off method, a linear process. This hand-off may take place between owner to architect/designer and builder to occupant. This conventional method does not allow for the expertise of all system designers and their input early on in the decision making process. Unlike the traditional design process where engineers and contractors enter at the end, integrative design welcomes these key players from the beginning. The result is a high performance building completed with a seamless construction process. Check out these guidelines to understand how an integrated design team would work on your next project.
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM MARCH 2015
First, define the project scope. What would you like your integrated design team to achieve? What obstacles will they need to keep in mind? Second, assemble the right team. Who will you invite? Will it be engineers, architects, designers, contractors, end-users, facility managers, community members—are all parties engaged? Next, define project roles with realistic expectations and clear responsibilities. Communicate tasks so that work is divided. Commit to measurable goals. Align team around core goals or purpose.
Key Players Integrative design welcomes these key players from the beginning. The result is a high performance building completed with a seamless construction process.
Phase your project and schedule meetings for the beginning and end of these phases. This web of relationships requires an integrated approach to the process of design and allows for systems integration. It is a non-linear process which supports an understanding of relationships between systems such as: site selection, water, energy, materials, resources and indoor air quality. One of my mentors often quotes Masanobu Fukuoka, “An object seen in isolation from the whole is not the real thing.” The basic elements of a whole system approach are based on the fact that life is whole and not fragmented, unique in every place and that we are inhabitants and not occupants. Why settle for anything less than a whole design? Brett Marlo DeSantis has her Master’s degree in Interior Architecture + Design, is a LEED accredited professional specializing in Building Design & Construction. She owns and operates Brett Marlo Designs + Brett Marlo Design Build where she enjoys creating functional, beautiful and healthy spaces.
Improving your quality of life by designing + creating functional, beautiful and healthy spaces. Whether remodeling, adding or establishing a new site, commercial or residential, we believe that time expended in the initial planning + design phases will save money during con‑ struction. A well‑designed space continues to provide cost savings & benefits to the owner throughout its life cycle. LICENSE # BRETTMD892QP

BY JULIANNA VERBOORT. PHOTOS COURTESY OF RIC HALLOCK.
Nature preserves, sunrise vistas, baseball fields, art camps, master gardening, biking, hiking, fishing; PenMet Parks supports all of these passions and more as the backbone of Gig Harbor’s robust recreation system. This lean-but-mighty nonprofit organization was approved by voters and founded in 2004. The district began with 38 acres and an assessed value of approximately $200,000. Ten years later, withstanding the recession, PenMet has grown to 700 acres and an assessed value near $36 million, with all parklands fully paid for. Phenomenal! “We started small. In 2010, Pierce County transferred eight parks to us. Through the hard work of PenMet’s staff, board and amazing partners, we’ve acquired 13 more venues and

been able to protect a lot of open space,” says Terry Lee, Executive Director of PenMet Parks. Lee has long been active in the civic arena, as have other PenMet board members. This wellintegrated team has leveraged relationships with other tax-funded organizations and municipal groups to achieve PenMet’s mission: enhancing the quality of life on the Gig Harbor peninsula by providing park and recreational opportunities for all of its citizens. Just a few examples of PenMet partnerships: Cushman Trail - Tacoma Power’s easement provided the land that the trail runs along; the City of Gig Harbor annexed the land and will operate and maintain the property; PenMet secured funding for the trail through multiple sources.

Indoor Soccer Center - PenMet partnered with Tacoma Screw Company to lease a building for the remarkably low fee of $1.00 per year and transformed the space into an indoor recreation center with over 60 programs.
•
Bujacich Off Leash Area and McCormick Forest - Partnership with the Fire Department, City of Gig Harbor and Peninsula School District saved PenMet hundreds of thousands of dollars through shared parking facilities and leased land.
•
Volunteers play a crucial role too. Eric Guenther, PenMet Facilities Manager, works with Rotary, Eagle Scouts, high school students, seniors and other citizens to clear trails, build stream crossings and enhance facilities.
•
“This is a community where people love to recreate. It’s why people move here,” says Kurt Grimmer, PenMet Commissioner. “PenMet provides diverse activities and invests to support healthy living.” What’s next for PenMet? The board will evaluate a dozen capital improvement projects at their annual retreat in March. Next up could be the redevelopment of 10.5 acres at the former Peninsula Gardens site, where they hope to house the park district’s administrative offices, continue with the Farmer’s Market and potentially add another indoor sports center, along with public park staples. Gear up for spring and take advantage of all that PenMet offers! Mark your calendar for PenMet’s 2015 special events. Be sure to check PenMetParks.org for details.

HEALTH, EDUCATION & PREVENTION A partner in children’s health. By Patty Hutchens. Photos courtesy Grit City Photography. For young children, a trip to the dentist can be full of uncertainty and apprehension, but at Harbor Kids’ Teeth nothing could be further from the truth. Here you see children smiling and having fun. Since opening her practice in 1993, Lisa Block, DMD, MS and her staff have provided an atmosphere that is fun loving, caring and professional. The compassion they demonstrate towards the children and their parents is an expression of the entire staff ’s commitment to making the dental experience a positive one from the first appointment through the teenage years.
At Harbor Kids’ Teeth, the entire staff has a goal that far exceeds dental care – education and prevention. “Our staff is dedicated to the total care of the child,” shares Dr. Block, who is proud of her outstanding staff.
A Gig Harbor resident for over 20 years, Dr. Block initially opened Harbor Kids’ Teeth in the 4700 Point Fosdick Building. In 2003 she moved to her current office at 3519 56th Street NW in Gig Harbor. Dr. Block is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and provides comprehensive, personalized care for all children.
One Gig Harbor mom could not be more pleased with her family’s experience. “We’ve been going to see Dr. Block since our first child was six months old. Our kids are now five and eight, and they can’t wait for their appointments,” said Amy Savage. “They have so much fun, know exactly what to expect, and aren’t afraid in the slightest to have their teeth examined and cleaned. What a gift!”
“We partner with our families to provide a dental home for our patients from the time the first teeth erupt all the way through their teenaged years,” said Dr. Block, who chose to focus on pediatric dentistry because of her dedication to disease prevention. “If we can get preventative education out early to parents and children, dental disease can be avoided.”
The atmosphere instantly draws in the children who enter Harbor Kids’ Teeth. Warm colors, toys and a gentle environment quickly put the children at ease. By making every child’s comfort a priority, Dr. Block and her highly skilled staff strive to make the kids happy and relaxed.
Dr. Block holds a Doctor of Dental Medicine and a Masters in Oral Biology. With a desire to give back to the community and profession that has helped her succeed, she volunteers her time and expertise to organizations including: board member of the Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation, Past President of the Washington

State Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Champion of Pierce County ABCD (Access to Baby and Child Dentistry) program. Joining Dr. Block this spring is Dr. Brian Dansie, a graduate of Ohio State University Dental School and a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist in practice since 2013. Born in Nephi, UT and most recently from California, Dr. Dansie and his wife Rachel have three children ages 2 through 8. If you ask him why he went into pediatric dentistry, the answer is simple. He loves kids. His first rotation in dental school was in pediatrics, and he knew instantly that working with kids was his passion. Dr. Block and her staff are anxiously awaiting Dr. Dansie’s arrival later this spring and look forward to their patients meeting him and his family. Dr. Dansie will be a perfect fit for Dr. Block and her staff. After all, they all share the same goal - to eliminate the need for dental treatments. “The focus of our practice is ongoing dental health, education and prevention for each and every child,” said Dr. Block. GIG HARBOR
IN FOCUS FOOD AND ALL AROUND FUN
Those in the know are flocking to Gig Harbor to explore its many offerings. By Sarah Polyakov. When it comes to small towns, Gig Harbor is among one of the nicest places to live, work and visit. These days, it is becoming even better than ever, and the outside world has taken notice. It is the dedication of many locals who have been working quietly behind the scenes that has really put us on the map. And in the months ahead there are even greater things planned for Gig Harbor. Since Mayor Jill Guernsey has taken office, downtown renewal efforts have been a priority. She, along with other elected officials, are all working towards the same goals, and it is exciting to see things happening! For one, the sale of the Gig Harbor Marina holds great possibilities for future expansion and promises to bring even more tourists to our area. For visitors and locals alike, the recent partnership between the Downtown Waterfront Alliance and Harbor WildWatch is an exciting opportunity to take a guided harbor walking tour that will incorporate trolley rides and some fascinating history. Whether you want to get to know your hometown a little better or are entertaining guests from out of town, make sure to include this on your list of things to do. One of the new exciting additions to downtown is The Harbor General Store opening this month. According to Mary DesMarais, Executive Director of the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, The Harbor General Store will be of great benefit to not only the boating community, but downtown residents as well. And while you are downtown, you don’t want to miss one of the newest additions to the area, Heritage Distilling Company. Its tasting room has already been a delight for both passers-by and shoppers.
ABOVE Make visiting Gig Harbor a family affair! TOP RIGHT The Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance is working towards an accredited Main Street Program.
Part of the energy that is infiltrating the downtown area can be attributed to the anticipation of the June 4th kick off of the Downtown Farmers’ Market. This will take place weekly on Thursdays in conjunction with the downtown’s famed Thursday Night Out. It will be a great time to gather family or stop by after work to enjoy the market and get in some shopping at our local stores as well. The Trolley, a charming addition to our beautiful downtown, will also be operating to make it more convenient for everyone. I invite you to view our lovely downtown and to take a “staycation” here at home. Follow those in the know and get to know our local restaurants and shops again, or take a look at the boats in our Harbor with fresh eyes. We already live in the best place in Washington. Gig Harbor Star Search GET A FRONT ROW SEAT TO THE MOST EXCITING MUSIC COMPETITION OF THE YEAR.
The Gig Harbor Kiwanis Club is looking forward to their sixth annual Star Search event on April 18th. This is an entertaining fundraiser for Gig Harbor Kiwanis that showcases area talent. Star Search features non-professional and semi-professional performers in a competitive mode - think a mix of American Idol and America’s Got Talent. Jeni Mallory of Gig Harbor Kiwanis mentions, “Star Search is a significant occasion because it is a community event, an important fundraiser for Gig Harbor Kiwanis, but most of all it’s a fun evening that showcases first-class talent.” While performers come from the Pierce County area, many are local to Gig Harbor. After a series of auditions, Kiwanis members select the top ten performers to perform their talent at Star Search. Typically, the performers are singers, musicians and small bands. Star Search has offered young people the opportunity to gain visibility. Some have gone on to compete in other contests, perform for the Maritime Gig Festival, cut CDs and perform in other events.

The winner from 2014 was Gig Harbor native Luke Stanton whose performances captivated the audience with his unique style. “Last year when Luke was performing you could hear a pin drop. His performance resonated with our audience and drew them in. His style is intense, yet mellow at the same time. The two songs that he performed last year were his own, and provided a rare treat for everyone in the audience,” said Jeni. Over the last five Star Search events, winners have been three individual singers and two delightful bands. The performers who compete

are a good mix and have included singers, drummers, pianists, a belly dancer, duos, and a very talented violinist. As a fundraiser, Star Search is a winner for everyone since it offers a great night of entertainment at the Gig Harbor Yacht Club. “We usually have about 160 people attending this event so it is a wonderfully intimate venue where the audience feels very much a part of the music,” said Jeni. Delicious and hearty appetizers are provided in addition to a no-host bar. Past attendees agree that the annual Star Search competition is money well spent. Best of all, all proceeds allow Kiwanis to provide support to many children in multiple ways. In order to support their humanitarian projects that enhance the lives of many individuals, fundraisers are necessary. While Gig Harbor Kiwanis may be best known for their signature project Gear Up for School, they do so much more for our community. Proceeds from Kiwanis fundraisers help support local groups such as Key Clubs in Gig Harbor and Peninsula High Schools, student scholarships, ECAP reading at Artondale and Vaughn Elementary schools, Terrific Kids program at Artondale and Purdy Elementary schools, a partnership with the “Purdy prison” to refurbish bikes for children, and Camp Beausite which is a camp for special needs children and adults. Star Search auditions will be March 14th, 21st, and 28th. To learn more about auditioning, contact Jeni Mallory 253.691.7085 The event will be held at Gig Harbor Yacht Club, April 18th. A CULINARY DELIGHT Locally owned and produced. By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Daniel Mumford. Whether you are a serious chef or one who likes dabbling in the art of cooking, you are sure to turn your simple creations into culinary delights with a visit to Olive Branch in Gig Harbor. When you step into this unique specialty store and gift shop, you will be amazed at the array of delicious products, which includes everything from infused olive oils and aged Balsamic to seasonings, spice blends, rubs, marinades and much more. Not only does Olive Branch distribute these products, but they produce them as well. And while the Olive Branch name may be new to you, their fine products have been a tradition for many in the Northwest for nearly 21 years. In 1994 Maggie Duffey and her family founded A Taste of Eden, a small bakery and treat shop on the waterfront in Gig Harbor. While it started out small, it did not stay that way for long. The family expanded its business into a full service specialty food business, shifting away from their original focus of sweets and treats to a more holistic approach of natural, clean label food items. With an ever-increasing demand for their products, they opened Olive Branch in Uptown in February 2014. Today, they produce and distribute hundreds of products throughout the Northwest.
There are many in our community, whether out of dietary needs or choice, who have turned to a gluten free diet. The products found at Olive Branch are free of gluten, soy, canola, MSG, salt, GMOs, preservatives and artificial ingredients making it easy for everyone to enjoy. “While our products resemble things that may be found in the marketplace, no other local company hand-produces 100% of its own products here in Washington, with this type of unheralded quality and variety,” said Daniel Mumford, Maggie’s son who manages Olive Branch. Other than the fact that all of their products are produced in Washington, another characteristic that differentiates their shop from others is that they feature their own handcrafted items both in bulk and prepackaged. “We also have dozens of other similar natural foods, including local wines, pasta, flavored salts and roasted nuts,” explained Maggie. Not forgetting their original focus on sweets, they also carry gluten-free bakery mixes, jams, spreads, mustards and chocolates. And what about those times you are struggling to find a unique gift for someone? Olive Branch can help you with that too. Their gift items are many and include cutting and serving boards,

wine accessories and even a doughnut maker. One of the services they enjoy providing at Olive Branch is to artistically create lovely gift baskets for all occasions. They will work with your budget and put together a basket that is sure to be a hit! Maggie and her sons Daniel and Andrew are honored to be part of such a wonderful community as Gig Harbor. It is not only where they have chosen to do business over the last 21 years, but is also the place they call home. “We love being part of the community,” said Andrew who adds they are dedicated to what they do. “Ultimately success is measured not in dollars and cents, but in impact over time. Nearly every day we are affirmed by our customers in how much they appreciate what we do.”

If you are committed, you will be successful. That is what Gig Harbor High School junior, Max Batanian, has learned through his years as an athlete. “You need to continually work hard until the job is done,” said Max. “I carry this work ethic into everything I do.” Whether it is wrestling, football, academics or scouting, Max achieves his goals. He has a 3.95 GPA, a 23-9 record in wrestling this year and is the running back for the Tides’ football team. “I am also currently finishing up my Eagle Scout rank,” said Max. The most difficult part of his journey came last year when Max injured his knee early in the wrestling season. Recovery was a slow and agonizing process. “Watching my team practice without me was hard, but I eventually recovered and was able to wrestle again at the very end of the season,” said Max, who added that he enjoys the intensity of both football and wrestling.
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM MARCH 2015
Academically, Max is interested in science, math and technology and plans to study environmental or civil engineering. “Ever since middle school the engineering world has fascinated me, and I would love to better the world in the future with my ideas and knowledge,” he said. Whether it’s sports or life in general, Max shares an important philosophy. “You can’t just think about yourself, because others are always counting on you.” Peninsula High School Luke Holsinger “Ambition will take you far in sports and in life.” That is the philosophy that has driven Peninsula High School senior Luke Holsinger to the top of the ladder of success. As a wrestler and football player, Luke enjoys the competition as well as the camaraderie that athletics bring. “Wrestling may be an individual sport, but your team is your family. It’s the same thing with football,” said Luke.
And his success doesn’t stop when he walks away from the wrestling mat or football field. Luke has a 3.87 GPA, is enrolled in seven AP classes and scored a 1990 on his SAT. He also placed third in the nation in the DECA Stock Market Challenge.

His career interests include civil engineering as well as financial planning. He said he will possibly attend the University of Washington but has not yet committed to a particular school. Whatever path his life takes him, there is no doubt that Luke will succeed. His words of wisdom when it comes to life? “Have a goal, something you think about every time things get tough.”
Luke has served as the captain of his wrestling team for two years. In both football and wrestling he received the Most Inspirational Award and received the Scholar Athlete Award all four years. In football Luke was named the All SPSL Defensive back / linebacker of the year and was also named to the 1st team all league.

COVER STORY THERE IS HOPE
When coming home doesn’t leave the war behind. By Joy Evans Peterson, M.A.
Since the turn of the century, Middle East conflicts have claimed the lives of 6,850 U.S. service members in combat. More startling, 22 veterans each day take their own lives. The unprecedented rise of suicide in veterans arouses public concern and sounds an alarm. The good news? There is hope. Communities are increasingly aware of the mental and emotional effects of combat for veterans. We know about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and have a layman’s understanding of the anguish of victims and the impact on families. PTSD is no longer a silent threat, and treatment is available. However, this hasn’t reduced the suicide rate…at least not yet. Gig Harbor mother and activist Leslie Mayne experienced the failure of PTSD treatment firsthand when her son lost his life the day after being released from a VA inpatient treatment program. Many relate the same sad story. Leslie’s path to healing has not been solely a private agony, but a relentless voice in bringing the issue to public attention. She created the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation (PTSD) which raises funds and awareness to help organizations that support veterans. In recent years, there has been a movement to identify and research lingering combat trauma that isn’t adequately addressed by the PTSD diagnosis or treatment. The condition

is known as moral injury (MI). Because MI shares similar symptoms, it is often incorrectly diagnosed as PTSD. But MI has a different root cause and emotional response. Several years before the concept of MI emerged, researchers wrote: “We conclude that veteran’s pursuit of mental health services appears to be driven more by guilt and weakening of faith than by PTSD symptoms or deficits in social functioning… spirituality should be central to treatment of PTSD.” MI occurs as a result of committing, witnessing or failing to intervene in acts that violate one’s internal moral or ethical code, or a betrayal of trust by someone in authority. It’s a crisis of conscience, a soul wound. It leaves a legacy of guilt, shame, self-loathing and loss of faith.
“American Sniper” is a compelling portrayal of the reality of war and the inevitable soul wounding and relationship erosion that occurs. Chris Kyle was reluctant to “quantify the number of kills.” He had to remain focused on his mission -- to protect his unit. In spite of sole commitment to the mission, disillusionment, anger, guilt and shame may be a lifelong legacy. Victims of PTSD/MI can lose a sense of mastery over their lives and resort to self-blame in an attempt to re-establish an illusion of control over their destiny. When that doomed strategy fails, life may no longer seem worth living.
They also knew there was a prescribed path to healing and reconciliation upon their return. Native American warriors had the sweat lodge. Returning Crusaders were prohibited from taking communion until completing the Catholic Church’s repentance to reconciliation process. The Old Testament describes a sevenday purification for “anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed.”
Today’s warrior is unprepared and goes to war without knowing the emotional and spiritual cost or assurance that there is a spiritual journey to healing within the community. A ritual that acknowledges the “blood on his hands” and promises forgiveness and Several years before the concept of reconciliation. The challenge today is that MI emerged, researchers wrote: a supportive group “We conclude that veteran’s pursuit of mental health services can be difficult to find, appears to be driven more by guilt and weakening of faith than especially when the by PTSD symptoms or deficits in social functioning…spirituality victim’s inclination is to should be central to treatment of PTSD.” isolate and alienate the people he needs most.
According to experts in the field of combat trauma, the usual approaches by clergy and mental health clinicians are not merely ineffective; they may actually increase the feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness.
In 21st century combat zones the battle lines are unclear and the moral or ethical boundaries are ambiguous. Fundamental assumptions about life’s purpose and human values are shattered by frequent traumatic events and repeated violations of accepted moral standards.
44
Chaplain Jonathan Entrekin, currently stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, has intently studied moral injury. He explains that we all belong to a moral community where we learned our deeply embedded beliefs about right and wrong. Throughout history moral communities have devised rituals and ceremonies for cleansing warriors with “blood on their hands” and restoring them to their community. Warriors went into battle with the knowledge that the normal rules of living in a community were temporarily suspended.

Clergy and mental health providers are generally the first point of contact when a soldier is desperate. Keith Tanis, Executive Presbyter of the Olympia Presbytery, has been inspired to discover what could be done to get it right and prevent soldiers, especially those with MI, from falling through the cracks. rarely occurs. Tanis’ Moral Injury Initiative and Mayne’s PTSD Foundation strive to change that. The Initiative’s objective is first educational, to teach the critical difference between PTSD and moral injury and what approaches are effective. The second is to understand the role each discipline plays in providing a cohesive healing community. And third to break down the barriers, joining hands and hearts to save lives and relationships. The Center for Learning Connections at Edmonds Community College is home to Veterans Training Support Center, funded by King County and administered by Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs. Their mission is to train mental health clinicians and social workers about veteran’s issues and provide counseling and other direct services for veterans and their families. What can the individual do to help? Most of us know veterans - from Vietnam among the Boomers - to the present day. Veterans themselves are often reluctant to admit they have a problem. Some of the signs to look for are withdrawal, isolation, paranoia, loss of faith, avoidance of social interactions, selfdoubt, depression, insomnia, pessimism, rage and addictive behaviors. There are many paths to healing, but a caring advocate is often needed to point the way. Someone who believes in the worth of the individual when they have lost belief in themselves. The important thing is for someone to voice a concern and act as an advocate. They fought for us, we need to fight for them!

The Hat Tales A FUN AND STYLISH EASTER BONNET IS A GREAT WAY TO CELEBRATE THIS TIME OF RENEWAL. BY SARAH POLYAKOV.
For many women, buying a new Easter dress and Easter bonnet or hat is part of their annual Easter tradition. Though many of us look forward to the hunt for new Easter clothes, we may not be aware of the original significance that they bestow upon the wearer. Did you know that this Christian custom can be traced back to the late 16th century in England? Originally, donning new Easter clothes and a coordinating bonnet was steeped in symbolism and meaning. These new Easter outfits fit in harmoniously with the coming of spring, which in itself represents new life. But, most importantly, donning them originally symbolized redemption and spiritual renewal. Everyone needs a fresh start and spiritual renewal, and there is no better way to denote this than donning a stylish Easter hat. The original Easter headwear actually originated in ancient Rome and was made of leaves, vines and flowers. They were woven together to form a fragrant wreath that was worn on the head. These garlands symbolized hope, rebirth and the euphoria that comes with spring. But, leaves and flowers were also ephemeral, lasting for a couple of days at most. These were also associated more with pagan celebrations that involved the rites of spring and honoring the Goddess Eostre.
LIVINGLOCAL
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM MARCH 2015
Only later did Christians develop a tradition of wearing new clothes and bonnets, which symbolized a type of post-Lent purification and rebirth. These were made of less shortlived materials such as woven straw or organically derived fabrics. What they had in common with the original garlands is that they usually featured flowers. In the United States, the Easter tradition of attiring oneself in new clothing and a floral bonnet did not evolve until after the Civil War. European immigrants who brought with them their more formal Easter customs strengthened these budding traditions. By 1933, when Irving Berlin wrote his famous song, Easter Parades had become a cultural staple. This year, don’t forget to check out your local stores for a colorful Easter dress and elegant hat. These days, there are so many different types of hats to choose from, and they can be found in vibrant colors as well as more subdued earth tones. This year’s Easter hats have many different styles that include 1920’s style cloches, extra-wide brimmed hats for drama and hybrids that are part beret and part feather fascinator for a touch of extra flare. Whichever hat you choose, be sure to participate in this fun and age-old tradition.

Tips to Keep You Healthy
A Journey To A Healthier You IMPROVING YOUR HEALTH ONE BITE AT A TIME.
BY TERESA PESCE.
This column is dedicated to the Middle-Aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older”, acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. In the last issue, I discussed the “one thing” approach to body change, as opposed to plunging into an unsustainable diet and exercise regimen. In the interest of full disclosure and also to amuse (and warn) you, I’ll share that some of my efforts at finding my “one thing” in exercise involved a peculiar propensity to think I could still do things I had done when I was younger. For instance, I recalled that jumping rope was a lot of fun during grade school recess, and fitness gurus always tell you do find an exercise you enjoy. So I purchased a jump rope with
LIVINGLOCAL
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM MARCH 2015
happy anticipation. I went into the garage so the rope wouldn’t hit the ceiling as I circled it over my head. I gave it a whirl, up and over and down to my feet as I jumped into the air. I fully intended to circle it around again, except an earthquake epicenter formed at my feet as I landed, and giant fissures snaked along the cement floor, threatening the entire structure. Oh all right, I’m exaggerating. But my stars, I came down with a thud! I felt the outrage of every jarred organ in my body, and the distress of my feet absorbing the blow. I was instantly out of breath in a self-protective mode lest I jump again. But it was fun in
53
grade school, I protested. Yes, well, that was then. This was now. Learning nothing from this episode, I tried roller skates! Do I really have to say it? My husband looked upon my perilous progress in a shaky circle and said hesitantly, “I thought you said you knew how to skate.” “I DO,” I replied with annoyance. “It’s just been awhile, that’s all.” As gently as possible, he encouraged me to add a pillow or remove the skates and admitted he’d rather I not continue this particular route to fitness as it might end up in a hospital bed and traction. So let a little wisdom prevail as you choose your one thing. I’m just sayin’. What I’d like to share with you now is a “one thing” sneaky approach to getting healthy! You can’t just cram yourself into a new lifestyle overnight; you have to be more subtle. You have to psych yourself out, thus circumventing your natural resistance to change. Psych Number 1: You need to eat more. No, really! You do! In fact, the more overweight you are, the more you need to concentrate on eating more. I strongly suggest thinking in oldfashioned terms of eating a meal in “courses.” First course, a flavorful soup. Second course, a leafy vegetable salad. Then the main course. Next, fresh fruit slices. Want to dip them in yogurt or something sweet? Go ahead! Psych Number 2: You need to devote more time to eating. Your body takes 20 minutes to send you a full signal. You take more time by just barely filling a regular spoon with food or by putting a modest bite on your fork. (Clue: If
you have to puff out your cheeks for the food to fit, it’s too much for your mouth. Smaller bites changes the “mouth feel” of eating.) Chew and enjoy! Then, put down your utensil. Sip your beverage. Then pick up your utensil and fill it with another modest bite. I know they say to concentrate on your food, but you actually need distraction from it between bites. Pause to watch a moment of TV, read a paragraph from a book or chat with fellow diners.
Enjoy! Eat more (good food only!), eat longer, savoring smaller bites. Take your time. Enjoy.
These “psychs” are simple, but they accomplish wonders long term. And best of all, you get to spend more time eating! If that isn’t great, what is? I once knew an Italian family with two darling children, both significantly overweight. When I joined them at dinner, I learned why. The children slumped low over their plates so the spoon would have less distance to travel from plate to mouth. They heaped positively towering portions of food upon their spoons and shoveled it into their mouths non-stop until their plates were empty. I’ve never forgotten that dinner.
BELOW Set a good example for the loved ones in your life.
Eat more (good food only!), eat longer, savoring smaller bites. Take your time. Enjoy. Does that sound like a regime you can live with? Founder of Sandpoint Onstage, Teresa Pesce is dedicated to supporting and promoting everyone in our community with theatrical gifts, whose age is irrelevant and whose only “weight” is the impact of their art.
I fully intended to circle it around again, except an earthquake epicenter formed at my feet as I landed, and giant fissures snaked along the cement floor, threatening the entire structure.
RIGHT Resting between bites can help send that full feeling to your brain.

Chocolate, Gum Disease and Stroke CAN DIET AND HEALTHY GUMS HELP YOU LIVE LONGER?
BY DR. RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS.
Here’s your prescription! Rx: Take one chocolate bar a week for health heart and be certain to see your dentist regularly. Researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute found that men who ate the most chocolate (2.2 ounces/week) had a 17% lower risk for stroke than men who ate little or no chocolate. Combined with similar studies with women, the total risk went down by 19%. The study attributed the effect to flavonoids, which lowers blood pressure, increases good cholesterol, improves artery function and may also thin the blood and prevent clotting. However, researchers also noted that those who ate chocolate tended to be more educated, healthier and less likely to smoke. They also had less blood pressure issues. Following a healthy diet, exercising regularly and treating known risk factors such as high blood pressure can lower your risk. Also, moderation is key, as is visiting your physician and dentist on a regular basis. Research also shows an increased risk of health factors correlate to unhealthy gums and bone in your mouth. Bacteria that cause gum disease can circulate in your blood stream every time you eat and brush. Some patients ask me, “Well, then maybe I shouldn’t brush?” If you don’t brush, plaque irritates the gums and causes bleeding. If you brush regularly and clean between your teeth, your gums will be healthier. I think of it as gum exercise. Gums like proper stimulation. Some great aids are the Philips AirFloss and Butler Soft picks.
happiness and a happy stomach (chocolate!!) Seriously, there are alarming statistics that may cause you to be concerned. My practice focuses on overall health of the patient, and based on my research, these facts are eye openers: A woman who smokes has the same risk factor for heart attack as a woman who is 100 pounds overweight. She also has a much higher risk factor for gum disease and stroke. Periodontal disease (a disease that affects the gum and bone around your teeth) has a role in early dementia, Alzheimers, Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, Autoimmune diseases and more. Patients with Periodontal disease can lose their teeth at an earlier age, leading to digestive issues. Most patients that we see want fresh breath and white teeth. They also want to (if possible) keep their teeth for a lifetime. There are ways, with today’s technology, that dentists can make this happen. Your diet, your habits and your lifestyle affect how you feel. In this day and age, you can make your dental needs fit your time and budget. Healthy dentition and diet can add ten years to your life. Is it time to take action?
Gum disease, left untreated, can cause blood sugar levels to be unstable. Also, the bacteria that cause gum disease have been found in the brain tissues, in the placenta of women who deliver low birth weight babies or stillborn babies and in the prostate. Your mouth is truly the gateway to your health, your

Tech Neck IF YOU HAVE IT, YOU MIGHT BE CAUSING SPINAL DAMAGE. BY SUSAN HOFFMAN. You are probably one of the many who spend an average of two to four hours each day with your neck tilted at a 15 degree, unnatural angle writing emails and texting. In an upright and neutral position, the average adult head weighs 10-12 pounds. However, this weight increases the more the neck is bent. If you look around at the office, on the bus, at school or even at a restaurant, you see people of all ages with their heads hunched down busily using their personal technical devices. According to Dr. Kenneth Hansraj, chief of surgery at New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine, when we tilt our head to just a 15-degree angle, we add 27 pounds of pressure to the spine. When tilted at a 60-degree angle, 60 additional pounds are added. To put this in perspective, Dr. Hansrai equates this to the weight of four bowling balls or carrying an 8-year-old child on your back. As children, many of us were told to stand up straight, and there is validity to this mantra. Good posture makes you look better, but it also makes you healthier. According to a report by CBS News, poor posture has been linked to a host of medical problems, some of which may surprise you. Some of the medical issues cited include headaches, disc herniation, muscle pain, depression, constipation and heart disease. When there is added stress to your spine, it can lead to wear and tear, degeneration and even possible surgery. When you use your electronic devices, being mindful of your
56

posture is critical. If you are properly aligned, the spinal stress is diminished. Your ears should be over your shoulders and shoulder blades should be retracted. Bad posture, with your head leaning forward and the shoulders rounded, will affect lung breathing capacity, blood pressure and moods. Chiropractic treatments using spinal adjustments can be very efficacious to correct bad posture. Your chiropractor may suggest exercises to help you strengthen the muscles that will assist in not overloading your spinal column. When your muscles work efficiently, you can reduce fatigue and reduce the risk of sprains and strains. Postural problems can sometimes be related to structural misalignments, weak or tight muscles, obesity, pregnancy, stress, heavy bags and high-heeled shoes. Probably all of us are guilty at some point of exhibiting poor posture whether it’s watching TV, working at the computer, reading, or using our mobile devices. All of these activities can exacerbate the condition known as forward head posture. Chiropractors have the clinical knowledge of spinal adjustments that cause compressions and block neural pathways. You are encouraged to check your posture, especially if you are experiencing any kind of back or neck pain. Just like you take your car to the mechanic when there is a problem or go to the doctor with medical issues, a visit to the chiropractor can help you maintain a healthy spine and promote well -being. More information about how Chiropractic can correct posture can be found on lifestylechirocenter.com.

Chemical Cuisine DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU’RE EATING? BY GLORIA GILBÉRE, CDP, DA HOM, PHD, DSC, ECOERGONOMIST, WHOLISTIC REJUVENIST, HTMA PRACTITIONER.
Working with thousands of patients worldwide who are victims of chemically-induced immune system disorders, the only way to provide assurance for good health is to be empowered through education to combat epidemics of syndromes/illnesses with some names we can’t even pronounce. Neurotoxic Chemicals A neurotoxic chemical in food production contributes to toxicity syndromes. Some people detoxify neurotoxins efficiently; others with chronic illnesses (chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, immunosuppression or endocrine disorders) cannot. Silent brain damage continues until the loss is so extensive it finally shows itself in the form of neurodegenerative diseases, cancer and birth defects. For instance, MSG changes the balance of glutamate in the brain. Scientific evidence clearly shows excess glutamate slowly kills nerve cells that depend on it for communication – degenerative damage appears to be a major link in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, as well as ALS, ADHD and dementia. Preservatives/Additives These substances are used for preserving/ coloring food, increasing/enhancing flavor – often with inferior ingredients and to encourage binge eating. Over 490 of these chemicals were never tested for poisoning. “At a Glance” • MSG and artificial sweeteners are like providing consumer with a lowdose psychiatric drug – changing the biochemistry of the brain*; • Aspartame, recommended for diabetics, actually accelerates diabetes; • Avoid BHT, BHA, TBHQ, sodium nitrites/nitrates, sulfites – all neurotoxins; • Neurotoxin = excitatory neurotransmitters – excitotoxins – Glutamate is an amino acid that excites nerve cells to
death. Pharmaceutical companies spend millions developing glutamate blockers to fight neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Meanwhile, glutamates are pouring (mostly hidden) as processed glutamate (MSG) into our food! Health through Education MSG is a white crystal substance , the salt of amino acid glutamic acid, a form of glutamate. It’s used as flavor enhancer in many foods, especially in pre-made soups, broth/ bouillon, natural chicken flavoring, sauces/ gravies, salad dressings, and processed foods. The processed food industry is notorious for using it with full knowledge of serious health effects in favor of profits. Cell Communication Thwarted Our modern food supply leads to mixed messages within white blood cells. According to Floyd Chilton, Ph.D., “These changes dramatically turned-up our immune system volume causing them to become our enemy. Our bodies are revolting; white blood cells overreact resulting in a plague of inflammatory diseases.” Inflammation makes-up the combination underlying causes of almost every illness – congestion of the ducts/vessels of circulation/ elimination such as bile ducts of the liver/ digestive tract, blood/lymph vessels, urinary tract and hormonal pathways/endocrine system. *SPECIAL – download a FREE list of msg and its legal aliases – enter: gloriagilbere. com/msgcard and enter Coupon Code: gigmar15. Four Food Myths THEY MAY JUST CHANGE THE WAY YOU EAT!
Don’t you just hate food scolds? Especially when they’re as certain they’re right as all those tech geniuses were about iPhones never replacing Blackberries. Well, in some cases, people are actually basing their assumptions on either pure myth or the latest diet fad. You know, as in: Gluten is bad for you. And listening to them can actually be risky. “Food myths are dangerous because they can deprive you of the benefits of a healthy diet,” says Tara Gidus, MS, R.D., who’s the team dietician for basketball’s Orlando Magic. Here’s a few myths that deserve to be debunked. MYTH: All yogurt is good for you. C’mon, if you smother anything with enough sugary fruits and toppings, it becomes dessert. MYTH: Fresh veggies are more nutritious than frozen or canned. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’s Melissa Joy Dobbins explains that veggies (and fruits) “are canned as soon as they’re picked so they’re at peak nutrition.” There’s also been research showing that canned tomatoes, in particular, contain more of the heart disease-protective carotenoid pigment lycopene than fresh ones. And since statistics indicate that, for some reason, adding
LIVINGLOCAL
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM MARCH 2015
tomatoes to your diet is related to increased consumption of healthy vegetables of all kinds. MYTH: Gluten-free diets are healthier. With the exception of those who suffer from celiac disease, chalk this one up to the hottest new diet fad. Without even really knowing what gluten is -- it’s a protein found in wheat, barley and rye -- people have somehow gotten it into their heads that the 99 percent of Americans who don’t have celiac disease should also avoid it. The problem is, such whole-grain foods happen to be rich in B vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and fiber, and may even help lower the risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer. That explains why no less than Peter H.R. Green, the director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, told WebMD that going gluten-free “isn’t something that anyone should do casually.” MYTH: Eggs are bad for your heart. According to the Harvard Medical School, the only large study that addressed the issue found “no connection between the two.” However, egg yolks do contain a lot of cholesterol, calories and fat. So for a lean and healthier option, discard the yolk or switch to pourable egg whites-only.

Did you know that humans are born craving sugar? Maybe that is why chocolate use to be used as a currency. In place of actual currency merchants would accept payment in the form of chocolate. Citizens would also use chocolate to barter with each other while exchanging goods and services.

March 17th marks the day that the most recognized patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, passed away. The year was 461 A.D. But it wasn’t until the early 17th century that the day was recognized as an official feast day in the Christian church.
Ray Wainright
The shamrock is a symbol of the festive day, but do you know why? Interestingly, it stems from the belief that St Patrick used the threeleaved shamrock in his teachings of the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish.

And what about that color green? The tradition of wearing green dates back to the 1640s when the Irish Catholic Confederation used the green harp flag. Although St. Patrick is credited with converting Ireland to Christianity, you may be surprised to learn that he was not actually Irish. Although his birthplace and exact date is unknown, it is believed that he was born in Scotland. So no matter where your ancestral roots stem from, go ahead and don your green and celebrate the day!

Head for the Coast Destination: Multnomah Falls and Astoria. By Jani Gonzalez.
In spite of all the driving we do daily, many of us don’t venture farther than 50 miles away from the place where we were born. Break away from this stereotype by exploring Oregon, one of our next door neighbors. As a transplant from the East Coast, driving across the U.S. only increased my appetite to see as much of the U.S. as possible. For some time, my husband and I had looked forward to exploring Oregon. Over the winter holidays, we made a go of it over a four-day weekend. On our drive to the Coast we decided to take a slight detour along the way to observe as much of Oregon’s natural beauty as possible. Driving I-84 took us along the scenic Columbia River where we eventually arrived at the breathtaking sight of Multnomah Falls, our first stop in our journey. This natural wonder, off exit 35, should not be missed. The waterfalls spill over 600 feet in a long, majestic stream, and the observation bridge puts you at the heart of it. Its mist creates a green wonderland of moss-covered trees. Visitors can stop their self-guided tour at the observation bridge or continue on a longer 2- or 5-mile hike. Our half-hour drive from the Falls to Portland gave us an opportunity to see the breathtaking view of Mount Hood in the distance After

spending the night there, we left the next morning for the Coast and drove an hour and a half to Tillamook, Ore. There, we visited the cheese and ice cream factory. Next, we stopped at Gearhart Beach, one of the many coastal beaches leading to Astoria. In the offseason, the beach had a surreal feel. Numerous upturned tree trunks dotted the beach instead of people. And the sand was picturesquely carved by the tide. On the beach and out in the water, we saw the area’s token monoliths, or “haystack rocks,” some of which can easily be climbed. Finally, Astoria. The sleepy town in “Goonies” with its hidden treasures. Yes, the movie was filmed there, and yes, you can visit the house. It’s a private residence, but they’re happy to let you snap a pic as long as you respect their privacy. You’ll see signs for it on 38th Street. Each year, the town celebrates the movie on Goonies Day, June 7th. This year marks the movie’s 30th anniversary. With its seaside charm, Astoria is a quaint destination when visiting Oregon. For lunch or dinner, choose from any of the beachfront seafood restaurants. Ours was the Ship Inn British Pub and Restaurant on 2nd Street where we ate fish and chips and shepherd’s pie. We then took a late afternoon walk along 12th Street and visited several of the town’s antique stores, many of which are on Commercial Street. We missed visiting Astoria Column,

While many visitors flock to the Coast in the summer, beat the crowds and explore the Coast without them in the off-season. And enjoy the ride there too.
