NOTE

Publisher’s

We Love What We Do! At Gig Harbor Living, we love what we do. Our marketing staff, writers, designers, photographers and contributors all have the privilege of getting to know every facet of our community through interacting with small business owners, school aged youth, organizations and individuals who make up this incredible community.

Where children can explore, create & learn!

The response to our growing publication has been uplifting and positive. I believe much of that is due to the nature of the stories we bring to you each issue. Through our magazine, website and social media pages we are able to deliver to you the good news that is happening right here in Gig Harbor. This can be a refreshing change from the horror we often witness on the nightly newscasts. Through other sources of media we hear a lot of negativity, and whether it’s about war, government or local crime, it can bring one’s spirits down. At Gig Harbor Living we enjoy giving people a break from those types of news stories and provide you our readers an opportunity to learn firsthand about the great things, people, organizations and events going on in the community. In today’s fast paced, high tech world it is easy to forget just how much we have to be thankful for, we hope our stories can serve as a reminder from time to time. We appreciate the support the community has provided and for allowing us into your businesses, homes and organizations to share all the good news. We look forward to sharing more heartwarming stories for years to come! We create community! We connect people! We build trust!

Hope

A mother’s journey through the pain. By Susan Hoffman. “SOMETIMES OUR PAIN and loss can be unbearable. If we share it with others sometimes it becomes bearable. Sometimes our dreams help others heal so they can begin to dream again.” These are the powerful words that Leslie Mayne, founder of Race for a Soldier, shares in her video of the poignant story of her son, Kyle Farr, who died on March 7, 2009. Kyle served in Iraq with the United States Army and, after an honorable discharge, received care for Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), depression, drug addiction and traumatic brain injury at Walter Reed Hospital. He later was treated at Perry Point VA Medical Center in Maryland, but was told he was taking up a space. He was released with the instructions to self- medicate his conditions. One day later he was found dead from an overdose in a hotel room in Baltimore. After witnessing combat, support for soldiers returning to civilian life can be limited. While the soldiers have shed their warrior clothes, the memories remain. Kyle worked diligently to reclaim his life, but the treatment offered him was a cocktail of drugs to “fix” all the emotional and physical implications of performing as a soldier in a war zone. Leslie is not faulting the VA, and she has no interest in being angry. However, her dream is to change how we respond to the returning soldiers. She promotes holistic and healing non-drug therapy through hiking, horseback riding, dog companions, retreats, white water rafting and community support. That desire is the driving force behind Race for a Soldier, the half-marathon event that she founded. Money raised from the event goes to organizations that are dedicated to helping soldiers recover from war and readjust to life back home. 12   Gig Harbor Living Local | www.GoGigHarbor.com

Leslie is a brave warrior herself as she went through the nightmare of losing a child. Her words are inspirational. “You can run and you can run to heal, but you can’t run away from the kind of pain of losing a child. You can’t go around it or go under it, but you must go through it.” During Kyle’s stay at the VA hospital, Leslie talked to him every day giving him encouragement, support and love as he tried to figure out his life’s plan. At the age of 27, Kyle had his whole life ahead of him. Following Kyle’s death, Leslie felt lost in her own wilderness, explaining it as a time when she saw no color. She quit her job, lost her home and left Gig Harbor to go to Texas to be with an aunt. When she received a notice from her the storage unit company notifying her she needed to remove her items, she took it as a message from God that it was time to come home to Gig Harbor and plan the next phase of her life.

Kyle and his mom Leslie in October 2001, one month after 9/11. They were in Virginia to be with the Farr family after Kyle’s cousin Shelley was killed at the Pentagon.

On that drive from Texas to Washington, Leslie was transformed. Her fear subsided, and she began to see more color in the Arizona deserts and sunsets and was struck by the majesty of nature in the mountains and the Pacific coastline. Her faith is bold and boastful, and she finds her strength in

Money raised from the event goes to organizations that are dedicated to helping soldiers recover from war and readjust to life back home. God, family and friends. She says her gift is to help and be there for others. Kyle’s death helped Leslie realize that she is not able to control everything, but she can control how to respond to things that happen to her. Leslie‘s dream is that all soldiers find hope and wholeness, and that we can do better for every soldier, no matter where, so that each man and woman can fully live and proclaim the talents that God has given each one. In addition to Kyle, Leslie has three other children, Kody and Kelsey both live in Gig Harbor. Kelsey and her husband Seth have blessed Leslie with a grandson Wade. Leslie’s daughter Kendall lives in New York. “Mothers no matter if they are in Utah,

Virginia, Massachusetts or Washington have a universal response to come together and to help each other. As mothers, if we can’t save our own child, we need a wider safety net so we can save others like Kyle.” Leslie personifies a mother of great passion and praise of who we can be or become and how to make a difference to our soldiers by giving them Permission to Start Dreaming. Typically Leslie would be celebrating Mother’s Day with her family probably hiking. However, this year she will be traveling with a group from her church to the Holy Land made possible by a generous gift from an anonymous donor. Leslie lavishes her love and compassion for all the soldiers struggling with their adjustment to civilian life. Her astonishing grace and humility is part of the healing force for those who have served our country so bravely and honorably. Leslie- Happy Mother’s Day!

Harbor Porpoises

The sentinel for a healthy Puget Sound. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos by Steve Russo.

Chief Seattle said, “Every part of this soil is sacred in the estimation of my people. Every hillside, every valley, every plain and grove, has been hallowed by some sad or happy event in days long vanished. Even the rocks, which seem to be dumb and dead as the swelter in the sun along the silent shore, thrill with memories of stirring events connected with the lives of my people.” (Seattle Sunday Star, October 29th, 1887) PUGET SOUND, or the Salish Sea, has been radically changed in the past 150 years due to the industrialization originally brought by settlers to the area. Puget Sound benefits many local residents since it brings millions of dollars into our annual economy through recreational opportunities. However, such economic gains do not begin to measure up to the sheer beauty and uniqueness of the Salish Sea and its inhabitants such as the harbor porpoise. “Phocoena phocoena is a distinct species unique to Puget Sound’s inside waters. They live out their lives near ours, foraging herring, smelt and sand lance in shallow nearshore waters, usually less than 500 feet deep.” (Seattle Times, Mapes, July 8th, 2013). The type of Harbor porpoises that are unique to Puget Sound had been missing from our waters for decades. While these grey-backed and diminutive porpoises were seen frequently in our waters through the 1960’s, they had all but disappeared from Puget Sound during the 1970’s.

May 2014 | Gig Harbor Living Local   15

PUGET SOUND Fortunately, there are many things that we can do to maintain the health of Puget Sound without inconveniencing our lifestyle or compromising our household budgets.

No one knows for certain why they disappeared; but scientists posit that their decline could have been due to environmental pollutants, rapid industrialization, over fishing, and entanglement in gill nets. The good news is that our harbor porpoises, which are Puget Sound’s only year round cetaceans, are back in a big way. But, even though our harbor porpoises are delightful enough to share the spotlight with our local orca population, maintaining their health and numbers plays an even more vital role. Scientists have found that our harbor porpoises are a type of sentinel. Their growing numbers tell us a lot about the health of Puget Sound since they store heavy metals from polluted water in their fat reserves. When their bodies are required to use these fat reserves during times of famine, they become very ill. When pollution decreases in Puget Sound, their health and numbers increase. In short, where these charming cetaceans are seen, we can be assured that our waterways are maintaining a certain level of health as well. Help Maintain the Health of Puget Sound Fortunately, there are many things that we can do to maintain the health of Puget Sound without inconveniencing our lifestyle or compromising our household budgets. But in order to maintain an optimal environment in which this delicate ecosystem and its inhabitants can flourish, there are steps that we are required to take. Pump your septic systems: It is important to pump your septic system before it becomes too full. When discharge from septic systems, that include viruses, chemicals, medications, 16   Gig Harbor Living Local | www.GoGigHarbor.com

and untreated bacteria leach into waterways, damage is done. Untreated discharge contaminates our shellfish populations, impacts human health, and eventually damages our fragile eco-system.

Use phosphate-free soaps: Phosphates that are commonly used in our soaps flood into the Puget Sound watershed. High levels in our waterways are linked to algae growth. Too much algae creates an unbalanced ecosystem and lowers oxygen concentration in water, which harms fish stock. Use homemade weed killers instead of pesticides: Commercial pesticides stay in our soil for generations. But, they also find their way into rivers, ground water, and eventually Puget Sound. There are many websites that provide inexpensive and environmentally friendly ways, such as use of rock salt and boiling water, to kill weeds. Let’s value the land, the animals, and the sea that was so precious to Chief Seattle by doing our part to make its health a priority. Though the harbor porpoise is a darling year-round sight for beachcombers and boaters alike, its continued health impacts the future of Puget Sound. Please help maintain the health of Puget Sound so that this invaluable ecosystem is available to future generations for their enjoyment.

Harbor Home Pro Going above and beyond to help make your home shine.

1ST LIEUTENANT JAMESON L. LAZARES launched Harbor Home Pro in November 2012 after returning to Gig Harbor from Japan where he served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. “The Corps instilled good things (in me) starting with a solid set of standards. I believe we make a difference for a lot of folks here in Gig Harbor simply by blessing them with a good old fashioned high quality product…and it’s a lot of fun making people smile too, you know,” said Lazares. Although Jamie is an FAA certified air traffic controller, he decided the opportunity for creativity and entrepreneurship through small business in Gig Harbor was more of an attraction. “It’s a real hoot being a small business in this community. I go out all day and get to meet new customers. We talk for a minute about getting their beach home brightened up and then we sit and talk fishing secrets or recent Seahawk trades. Life’s good here,” he said. During his leisure time Jamie likes to salmon fish, backpack, and travel. Some of his best adventures include backpacking, mountaineering and paddling the Yukon Territory of Canada or the year he spent backpacking and exploring Israel and Egypt after graduating college. “My time in Israel was the greatest adventure of my life. That place bubbles with culture and is an unending adventure that walks you through the biblical paths you read about in Sunday school as a child.” Harbor Home Pro specializes in home exterior maintenance, and they are well known in the harbor for their quality of work, professionalism, and enthusiastic approach to doing what it takes to make happy customers. Their Gig Harbor themed website, harborhomepro.com, boasts of their outstanding reputation on angieslist.com and also features handwritten thank you letters from excited customers who thank them for going “ above and beyond.” They make the customer a friend and when it comes to policy, their customers are always right and always happy at the end of the work day.

“Expertise you can trust, from people who care” Jamie and his team of pros are also quite active within the community. Harbor Home Pro offers complimentary window cleaning services to its customers who suffer a loss within their families and need the windows cleaned for a reception after losing a loved one; call them up if you need help. They have also sponsored kids’ camps and have provided booth space for the Christa Camps to participate in the Maritime Gig Festival. Jamie and his family attend Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church, and he uses his company as a community resource to clean church windows for Easter weekend or to fund his participation in a house building mission in Mexico. “Being a part of this community is an awesome experience. There’s a certain feeling here, an atmosphere, and we’re cut from that same cloth,” he said.

Gig Harbor

in Focus

IT WAS EXACTLY 100 YEARS AGO when Congress established that Mother’s Day be celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Today, mothers are typically honored with gifts as well as taken out to a restaurant. History, however, portrays a somewhat different scenario. In ancient Egypt a festival was held to honor the goddess Isis who is often depicted sitting on a throne and called the Mother of the pharaohs. Two more mother goddesses, Cybele of Turkey and Rhea of Greece, were worshipped and recognized as female divinities. The Roman festival was held from March 15-28, and a statue of the goddess commenced the parade. It has been said that some festivals were so wild that the celebration was banned. As Christianity developed in the 16th century, the day was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor the Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ.

EVENT

Spring Has Sprung The Horsehead Bay Garden Club has completed a four-year club project to plant over 2,000 daffodil bulbs in front of the Boys and Girls Club on Skansie Avenue. The project initially began in 2010 on the south side of the front entrance with the planting of approximately 300 bulbs. Over the course of the following three years, the members completed the project, planting the area from the front side of the Club to the north entrance.

In the 17th century the day was called Mothering Day and families feasted on cakes and received bouquets of flowers. As the English migrated to America, Mothering Day tradition ended, possibly because living conditions were made difficult due to long working days and people resisted secular holidays, instead choosing to focus on their devotion to God. In 1870, Julia Ward Howe, the famous activist, author and poet, provided insight into today’s view of Mother’s Day when she “called on Mothers to come together and protest what she saw as the futility of their Sons killing the Sons of other Mothers.” She had very strong views on the senseless killing in the Civil War. On May 10, 1908 the first official Mother’s Day took place at St. Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia when the daughter of Anna Reeves Jarvis, an advocate of Mother’s Day, presented every mother at the church 2 carnations. Now, one hundred years later, Mother’s Day is a $16 billion dollar industry with restaurants claiming it as their busiest day of the year! Retailers claim that except for Christmas, Mother’s Day rates as the highest gift giving day while florists report their highest sales is this May holiday.

The Horsehead Bay Garden Club, which includes Master Gardeners, floral arrangers, designers and those who love to garden as a hobby, has been in existence for over 70 years. Each year the Club selects a project with the goal of enhancing the quality of life in the local community. Previous projects have included donating the planters in front of the Harbor History Museum and supporting both the local FISH and Phoebe House – a women’s shelter. Currently, the Garden Club is also providing twice-monthly floral bouquets to area Franciscan Hospice patients. Stop by the Boys and Girls Club to see the beautiful daffodils!

If you are looking for a unique way to spend the holiday weekend with your mom, consider attending the Gig Harbor Beer Festival on Saturday, May 10th. It is not only a fun time, but also a great way to help the community. The event is a fundraiser that benefits the Gig Harbor Kiwanis Foundation. It will take place in Uptown Gig Harbor at 4701 Pt. Fosdick Drive from 12-6pm. Tickets are $25 after April 25th and are available at the door, however it typically is a sellout so to be sure, please purchase your ticket ahead of time. For more information email: contact@gigharborbeerfestival.com or to purchase tickets online visit: gigharborbeerfestival.brownpapertickets.com. While the options are plentiful as to how you honor your mother, as the mother of five I know am always satisfied with, “I love you Mom.”

Tradewinds Treasure Gallery Unique, unusual and beautiful. By Sarah Polyakov. YOU REMEMBER it as if it happened yesterday. It was a sunny, fall day as you walked along the left bank of the Seine. You browsed the tables of out-of-print books from neighborhood booksellers by the river. You wore your favorite equestrian print silk scarf, remembering how it caught the wind, seeming to take flight, as you meandered from table to table. Finally, you met a mysterious woman who was selling all manner of beautiful pieces, many from bygone days. On her tables you found menageries of polished brass timepieces and jade artifacts hinting that they once belonged to a Chinese Empress. But, oh the jewelry and the unique wearable’s that you found that day. You remember holding up a ruby necklace, contemplating each facet as it captured the fall sunlight. You wondered what secrets this enigmatic necklace had to tell—ones that you might never know, but which added to the pleasure of the wearing. After all, you realized that sometimes it is the mystery that adds to the beauty. You always wished you had bought that necklace, but, like your scarf, you followed the crisp fall breeze and left the necklace behind along with its secrets. But now it has all come back to you, just like yesterday, as you enter Tradewinds Treasure Gallery in Gig Harbor, which opened its doors in June of 2013. Just like that unforgettable fall day in Paris, Tradewinds Treasure Gallery is an experience unto itself. Our gallery affords the opportunity to discover and perhaps purchase an exceptional masterpiece. We are members of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, and the Gig Harbor Gallery Association. Candice and Shelby Langston, the proprietors of Tradewinds Treasure Gallery, are pleased to welcome you to browse artistic masterpieces, antiques, imperial jade artifacts, games, Damascus Knifes, antiques and collectibles, sculpture, fine jewelry and timepieces. Be assured that our pieces contain both historic and artistic significance. Since each piece is like no other, there are always new gems to discover. Originally discovered by Skip Williamson of LA indie label Lakeshore Records while still living here in her hometown of Gig Harbor, she signed her first recording contract at 17. Her Lakeshore Records self-titled EP was produced by Pete Droge, and delivered a windfall with each and every song receiving placement in a major motion picture or soundtrack, some of which included Wicker Park (“Lightswitch”), Midnight Meat Train, and Feast of Love. The track “Lightswitch” became a hit at college and indie radio in the U.S., alongside at stations across the European continent. Tiffany, of 80’s pop radio fame, covered her composition “Mind Candy” on her album Just Me. Alayna Piwonski

PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL. BY MERIDITH HATCH. PHOTOS BY ED JOHNSON. PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR Alayna Piwonski loves soccer and softball, playing both for four years in high school and on community teams. As a dual-sport utility player, Alayna can play any position, though if asked to pick she says she plays mostly forward in soccer and either third or second base in softball. Alayna has gone to State with the girls’ fast pitch team three years so far, and she’s hoping for a fourth before she graduates. Her numerous soccer achievements include being chosen as JV captain her junior year and varsity captain her senior year, helping lead the team to State both years. Her biggest challenge came playing soccer her freshman year. Alayna’s foot had been bothering her for awhile so halfway through the season she went for an x-ray. Her foot was fine; instead the doctor discovered a scaphoid fracture in her wrist, requiring surgery and a cast. Usually a

season ending injury, athletic trainer Webb Sommers designed a protective device for the cast using bubble wrap and foam, allowing Alayna to successfully finish the season. She was then pulled up to Varsity for postseason play. Her most memorable moment came playing soccer this past season. The game went into overtime tied with number two Bonney Lake. About forty yards from the goal Alayna scored the golden goal, ending and winning the last home game of her high school career against one of their biggest rivals in the league. Alayna has earned the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award for both sports all four years, has a 3.74 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. She aims to become an anesthesiologist, where she can help others while using math, chemistry and biology.

The University of Washington and Washington State University are among the schools that have already accepted Alayna. Although she remains undecided, Alayna has had a few offers to play soccer or fast pitch and plans to play intramural soccer, fast pitch and other sports at the school of her choice. “One of the greatest things I have learned is that it doesn’t matter if you have the best or the most skilled team,” Alayna said. “If everyone gives it their all and works for each other, they can accomplish amazing things and become something bigger than themselves.” Favorite Food: Spaghetti. Favorite Teacher: “Mrs. Richards. She is incredibly smart, kind and compassionate. She pushes me to be the best student and person I can be, and she made me feel like I can make a difference in the world.”

GIG HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL. BY MERIDITH HATCH. Since she was a little girl, Julia Ponce’s favorite place to be was in the pool. She started playing water polo with Stanford micro division when she was eight years old. Outside of school, Julia has attended National Training Selection Camp and the Junior Olympics for nine years in a row and has received the All American water polo award three years in a row. “I love everything about water polo: the competition, being part of a team and the great workout. The amount of exercise I get from water polo is great. Swimming, leg workouts and scrimmaging for hours is not only beneficial to my health, but also contribute to being successful in the pool.” To Julia, playing high school water polo for the last four years has made the Lady Tides more than teammates; they are sisters. “I love the Lady Tides and couldn’t ask for a better group of girls to play water polo with my senior year,” Julia says. “When playing I forget about the world outside of the pool. The competition gives me and my team a chance to show people our style

of play and win games!”

Julia credits her family, teammates and coaches for her success. “I have great coaches, head coach Mike Kelly and assistant head coach Diana Litsch have guided and pushed me to play my best, and I have loved playing for them throughout my high school career.” Awarded both academic and athletic scholarships, Julia plans to enter the medical field, studying Kinesiology and playing water polo at Fresno Pacific University starting this fall.

Julia has learned many life lessons while playing water polo. “My teammates and my coaches have always stood by me and have pushed me to do my best. Support from my team and coaches have really helped me overcome the obstacles that I encounter.” She continues, “I have learned that no matter where I am or what I am doing, I am the only one who decides how well I do. So I have decided to do my best with whatever I do.” Favorite food: ice cream Favorite teacher: Ms. Kurz. “She’s a great teacher and a huge part in helping me be successful in math.”

Much more than a wine bar. By Julie Reed

IN THE FOUR YEARS since it opened, Morso has become a favorite of many. Located on the waterfront at the head of Gig Harbor Bay, the full service restaurant boasts one of the most gorgeous views of the harbor and captures the essence of Gig Harbor dining. Owned by Stephanie Huddleston and Steven Lynn, Morso features creative culinary delights which can be paired with wines from their internationally inspired wine list and generous draft craft beer selections. “Our atmosphere is upbeat, casual and if customers have to worry about sitting up straight, we’ve done something wrong,” said Lynn. “We offer great live music, art and most recently literary performances.” Both Lynn and Huddleston attribute their success to their incredible staff, the support of friends, loyal customers and the partnerships they have established along the way. “These are the things that keep Morso vibrant,” said Lynn. The owners are world-traveled veterans who incorporate their unique perspective and appreciation for cultural styles and techniques into their ever-changing specials and menu offerings. “Whether it is changing our specials, menu, wine selections, or beer, we want to keep that freshness part of Morso,” Lynn describes. Morso offers thematic meals with food inspired by world class vintners from Italy, Spain and France. The Morso staff prepares an authentic experience that showcases both the cuisine and wine. And almost every Friday you can take part in a wine tasting event.

Part of the Morso fiber is creating partnerships with local talent, providing an array of entertainment at the restaurant. The Muse at Morso, which takes place the second Thursday of each month, features premier authors and poets sharing their work. Their gallery exhibition space has held over 25 solo art exhibitions of local and regional artists including oils, acrylics, pastels, fused glass and 3D art. “Sometimes people say to us, ‘I thought you were just a wine bar.’ That’s when we get to describe what we offer - food, beer, wine, music, art, literary programs and they rethink their thoughts of a wine bar and decide to just call us Morso,” Lynn continues. Stop into Morso for lunch, happy hour, dinner, a private dining event or a night on the town. You won’t be disappointed! Parking is located in an expansive lot behind Morso off Peacock Hill. Recipe the Cobb

This take on the Cobb Salad was created for Litehouse by Chef Paul Folksted of the Western Oregon Culinary School. Cobb Salad was the invention of restaurateur manager, Bob Cobb, who in 1926 at The Brown Derby restaurant in Los Angeles found a way to use up leftovers!

Remember This A good way to remember the components is to use the mnemonic EAT COBB: Egg, Avocado, Tomato, Chicken, Onion, Bacon, Blue cheese.

Chef Paul’sCobbSalad GatherIngredients: • 3 hard cooked eggs, peeled • 8 bacon slices • 1 head romaine lettuce, leaves separated and torn into bite-size pieces • 2 cups chopped watercress (tough stems removed) • 4 cups diced cooked turkey or chicken • 2 avocados, pitted, peeled and diced • 2 tomatoes, chopped • 1/4 pound Litehouse® Blue Cheese Crumbles • 1 jar Litehouse® Bleu Cheese Vinaigrette or, • Litehouse® Big Bleu or, • Litehouse® Chunky Bleu Cheese • Litehouse® Bacon Bleu Cheese • Litehouse® Original Bleu Cheese • Litehouse® Yogurt Bleu Cheese • Litehouse® Lite Bleu Cheese

PutItTogether:

1 Cut the hard cooked eggs into 1/2 inch dice and set aside. In a large frying pan over medium heat, fry the bacon for about 10 minutes or until crisp; transfer to paper towels to drain. When cool, crumble and set aside.

2 Make a bed of lettuce on a platter, shallow bowl or individual serving plates. Arrange the eggs, bacon, herbs, watercress, turkey or chicken, avocados, tomatoes and the 1/4 pound Idaho Bleu Cheese in a neat pattern atop the lettuce (in rows or in a checkerboard pattern) covering the lettuce almost completely. Pour a little of the dresssing over the salad and garnish with chive lengths. Serve immediately.

ShopinStyle Mother’s Day FIND UNIQUE GIFTS FOR MOM LOCALLY. BY PATTY HUTCHENS. IT’S MAY and you know what that means – time to come up with the perfect gift for mom. While flowers are a favorite of many, why not take a stroll through our locally owned stores, including florists, and find something truly unique. There are many suggestions out there for the perfect mother’s day gift, but the truth is no one knows mom the way you do! Here are some suggestions for a different twist on a Mother’s Day gift, and ones that you can find locally! One of these may just strike you as something your mom will appreciate and enjoy. Does your mom enjoy a night out? If you don’t already know, then do some investigating and find out what her favorite restaurant is. A gift certificate is a great gift idea and one that mom can use at any time – especially on a night where she does not feel like cooking! It is a well-known fact that mothers, especially those of young children, seldom take time for themselves. A massage? A pedicure? It’s either not in the budget or is just too difficult to find the time. Help mom find the time; older siblings can offer to babysit the younger ones, or dads can give up a round of golf on Saturday. Give mom the gift of time to focus on herself and time to relax! Our town has several great places so shop around and find the perfect pampering gift for her. A keepsake specially made by her child is something all moms treasure. Go online to search for a do it yourself pottery place near you. They are becoming more and more popular and kids, as well as adults, have a great time. There is an extensive array of choices from which to choose including plates, mugs, flowerpots, frames and jewelry boxes. Many of us equate florists with just that – flowers. But the truth is many florists carry much more. Garden art, wall décor, and birdbaths all make great gifts. Or how about enlisting the help of your local florist to help get mom’s flower baskets ready for spring. It is a service many florists offer and may save a busy mom a lot of time. Perhaps your mom is elderly and has all that she needs. Often it is difficult to come up with ideas for her. Does she like to read? Magazine subscriptions or books are a favorite of many. Or take a trip to the local Farmers’ Market to buy some special homemade jam. For many moms whose children no longer live at home, the gift of spending time together is one they deeply cherish. Take mom to lunch, shopping or maybe a stroll through the park. Whatever the choice, your mom will be sure to know that she is appreciated and loved. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and enjoy your special day!

Summer Maritime Gig Fest Community Reflections as the Excitement Builds. By Julianna Verboort.

ROUND ROLLING ROCKS, running citizens, dancing pirates, strumming guitars, classic cars and more: Gig Harbor’s biggest party is not to be missed! Maritime Gig Fest is held on the first full weekend of June, leading Gig Harbor’s Signature Summer Events. Gig Harbor’s Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and enthusiastic volunteers have organized “the Gig” for more than two decades. It is one of the community’s most widely appreciated events. “It gives people in our community a reason to get out and meet their neighbors. It strengthens community relationships and brings us closer together. It makes Gig Harbor a great place to live and visit,” says Warren Zimmerman, President/CEO of Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce. “The Gig could not happen without generous local business sponsors. Community and business support has been remarkable.” Celena Zanuttini echoes that sentiment. A Gig Harbor High School teacher, she enjoys taking her family to the Gig. “It’s great fun, we like the car show, love the music and food! It’s always great to get out to a festival like this because it’s close to home, and it brings out everyone in the community as well as folks from all over!”

Four generations of the Gorman family who have have volunteered for more than 20 years.

Maritime Gig Festival started as a community parade organized by a group of local fishermen and the Chamber in 1991, with support from waterfront businesses as a way to thank community customers. When event costs climbed high in the late 1990s, merchants requested additional help from the Chamber. “Ultimately the board acknowledged the importance of the Gig to the community and saw it as an opportunity to enrich Gig Harbor’s health and vitality,” says Zimmerman. What does the Gig have in store for you? This weekend-long jubilee offers spirited fun for people of all ages, abilities, and interests. The festival begins at 8 am on Saturday, June 7, with the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast followed by the U.S. Bank Family Fun Run and the Harbor Grande Parade. From 12–9 pm, choose from dozens of fun and interesting activities. A fresh wave of action begins at 10 am Sunday, June 8, with the Wheels On The Water classic car show, then motors ahead with live music, booths, kids’ activities, and the Blessing of the Fleet— a memorable ceremony marking Gig Harbor’s rich maritime heritage. The Gig is a multi-generational tradition. Families who brought their children to the

early festivals during the 1990s are now bringing their grandkids or great grandkids. Mary Gorman’s family has organized the Harbor Grande Parade for more than 20 years. “We were ‘sucked in’ by my mother-inlaw, Carol Gorman,” Mary Gorman cheerfully commented. “I can’t say for certain, but I think she planned the first parade. My son Cole was about two or three years old and got his picture in the paper in his Uncle Sam hat. He is now 27, so our family has been involved for a long time. We have always appreciated the Chamber allowing us to continue with our family tradition.” Attracting more than 15,000 guests, the Gig is not a small undertaking! “Some people have the impression that the Chamber has a large paid staff. But we have only two full time and two part time employees and the rest are volunteers,” shared Jamie Taylor, Chamber Communications Specialist. Many local businesses and organizations participate at different levels. Several years ago, Deborah Grady stopped here while on a road trip and admired the town so much that she decided to put down roots. “By participating in the Gig, my business has gained exposure, and I’ve had the opportunity to meet local residents while they enjoy one

The Chamber is the first stop for many businesses, new residents and visitors. “The Chamber is the front door to the community, greeting visitors and answering questions about all aspects of life in Gig Harbor. Health&Lifestyle The Balanced Body

Ensuring a strong foundation paves the road to success. By Lisa Paull, Certified Personal Trainer, FAST Program Director at PneuThera in Sandpoint.

WHERE IS YOUR PAIN? Are you experiencing sciatica, knee pain, back pain, plantar fasciitis, or shin splints? Weekend warriors, star athletes, and couch potatoes all experience chronic or acute physical pain at some time. What causes the inception of pain? Where is its foundation? If you tried to build a house on an unbalanced foundation, the walls would not be stable. Depending upon the severity of the imbalance, you either could not build the walls at all, or eventually they would fall, bringing the roof down with it. This is what we do when we tell ourselves that all we need to do is exercise or lose weight and all our pain will go away. We try to “fix” ourselves by building on an unstable and unbalanced foundation - our body.

The original imbalances can come from an injury, overuse, or misuse of our body. Our muscles and skeletal system are all connected, myofacial meridians running throughout organizing the structural forces required for motion. The compensation our body imposes to account for the imbalances affect the functioning of the entire system. A neuromuscular process known as reciprocal inhibition illustrates that when a muscle is activated, the opposing muscles are inhibited; they are turned off or shut down. For example, if the quad is tight, even though it might not feel bothersome to you, the hamstrings sense that muscle engagement and become slightly inhibited. We are asking the hamstring to do its normal functions, but as it is firing a bit later or not contracting to full capacity, it can become tight and strained. How many of us sit throughout the day and then sleep with our knees

up and hips flexed? Tight hip flexors are common and as they work in conjunction with the calf muscles and structures of the foot to allow dorsiflexion (the flexion of the foot upwards allowing for a proper heel strike) they are culprits in plantar fasciitis. The opposing gluteal muscles will be slower to engage, affecting hamstring function and hip movement. The hamstring attaches to the pelvis and depends on it to rotate with our gait to coincide with the contraction of the muscle. Altered gait and movement of the pelvis in turn is connected with low back pain. Postural deficits such as forward lean and excessive lumbar curve put undue pressure on the low back and contribute to low back pain. Forward head positioning and tight muscles of the neck, shoulder, and upper back may be the source of recurrent headaches. These examples are but a few, making us aware of the fact that where we feel the

pain may not necessarily be the reason for our discomfort. It is important to have a thorough assessment to evaluate imbalances in the body before taking on an exercise program. Tight muscles need to be identified and relaxed as well as weaker muscles strengthened. Don’t exacerbate the problems by trying the “quick fix”. Once you find balance in your body, your exercise and strength programs will help you maintain posture and stay pain free.

Yoga Therapy

Take your wellness into your own hands. By Dr. Christina (Tina) Hefley, Physical Therapist, RYT200- Yoga Teacher EVERYONE HAS HEARD OF YOGA, but did you know you can consider yoga as medicine? It’s an inexpensive alternative for everyone, the healthy and the sick. Yoga is a new path. A path that you can walk down to take your health, wellness and future into your own hands. It has been known for centuries that practicing yoga regularly improves digestion, circulation, balance, mobility, posture, breathing, metabolism, relaxation, sleep patterns, immune functions, as well as establishing control of one’s body and life. But not everyone can head down to the local yoga studio and just start stretching. Physical and mental barriers are extremely common. Didn’t you just say “I’m not flexible enough to do yoga,” or “I have a bad back,” or “I need to lose weight first.” Yoga is for YOU and yoga therapy can get you started on that path to feeling good again! Indra Devi, a renowned ambassador of yoga, contended that “yoga is an art and science of living.” The art lies in the practice-based evidence, the mastery of therapeutic skill and the dialectic that occurs as therapist and client explore personal yoga practice as the vehicle for healing and a way of being. According to Dr. Timothy McCall, internal medicine physician and medical editor of Yoga Journal, not every yoga class is appropriate for students with injuries. Those students with special needs should instead try yoga therapy. “Yoga therapy is typically conducted one-on-one or in small groups. Often, a session more closely resembles an appointment with a physical therapist or rehabilitation specialist than it does a typical yoga class. What sets this healing modality apart from others is the focus on linking movement to deep, rhythmic breathing. Another difference is the emphasis on relaxation. In fact, when someone is gravely ill, a therapist may suggest that the entire practice consist only of breath awareness and relaxation until the patient is ready to tackle more. APPROPRIATE TRAINING If you have a condition that requires knowledge of the physical body, like back pain or arthritis, find someone with substantial anatomy training. If you have a more serious medical condition—such as cancer, heart disease, or lupus— you’ll need a therapist who understands the disease, the effects of medications, and contraindications to practicing. Look for someone who has sought additional training in your specific condition or who has a background in a health care profession, like nursing or physical therapy. AN ACTIVE YOGA PRACTICE An effective yoga therapist must have this. AN INSPIRING APPROACH A good yoga therapist is knowledgeable, but a great one will be able to design a personalized program that motivates you to practice on your own. The key to success in yoga therapy is to feel connected to your own healing.” - Timothy McCall, MD.

Let’s Talk Chiropractically What to expect when you visit a Chiropractor. By Susan Hoffman.

WHAT DOES A CHIROPRACTOR DO? Chiropractic care uses manipulation of the spine and can be traced back 3000 years to ancient China, Greece and Egypt. The practice in this country gained popularity in the 1980’s and involves skilled, specific hands- on techniques that include manipulation and mobilization. The goal is to reduce pain and to increase range of motion and wellbeing. Along with the manual procedures such as spinal and joint manipulation, the chiropractor works with the patient on exercise, psychosocial aspects of management, patient education on spinal health, posture, nutrition and life style modifications. How do you select the best Chiropractor? Because it is a profession with a large variety of philosophies and techniques, it is important that you feel comfortable with and have a good rapport with your chiropractor. Begin your search by asking for recommendations from your own clinicians including your primary care physician. It is also helpful to ask friends, co-workers and neighbors about their experiences. Before starting any treatment, it is recommended to conduct a telephone interview or ask for an in office consultation where you can meet each other. You can also gain some insight by observing the office setting and the support staff. It is always good to inquire about the chiropractor’s

What are the benefits and risks of Chiropractic Care? Treatment is based on an accurate diagnosis of your complaint, and it is important that you notify your primary health care provider that you are seeking a consultation and/or treatment. Spinal manipulation and chiropractic care is considered safe and effective. There should never be any pressure about receiving treatments. As in any clinical practice there is a rare risk that treatment worsens a condition. Chiropractic care has many positive results and most importantly it has helped many patients avoid risky surgery.

Home&Essentials Bee Friendly Tips on designing a garden where bees can flourish. By Sarah Polyakov. MANY OF US ARE aware of the on-going issue of reduced bee populations. The plummet in bee populations is due to wide spread use of insecticides and a reduction in suitable food sources for bees. But there is something we can all do to help. This reduction affects all of us since honeybees alone pollinate at least one third of large-scale agricultural products. Fortunately, there are steps we can take to increase all bee populations. By taking these steps, we improve the health and sustainability of our own gardens while also benefitting agriculture. Did you know that for a honeybee to make one pound of honey, he will need to visit two million flowers? Here are some steps that you can take to help. Just Say No to Pesticides While pesticides conveniently rid your garden of pests, they also harm bees. Mother nature already keeps pest populations under control through the food chain. Ladybugs, spiders, the praying mantis, and even wasps keep pests under control.

place it in the shade. There Is No Place Like Home Bees need shelter from the rain and cold. Bees are happy to build their own shelters if you provide an area of untended garden or part of your yard for them to occupy. However, if you would like to provide a structure, many bees are naturally drawn to parts of hedges that are left undisturbed. If you provide the hedge, they will build their home. “Bee A Hero” and Plant a Bee Friendly Garden Many of the plants that bees use for food sources either grow wild or are commonly found for sale at your local grocery store. You can be a hero when you include plants in your garden from the lists below. Herbs: Lavender (all types), oregano, rosemary, peppermint, spearmint, and parsley, basil, and cilantro. Flowers: Hyacinth, crocus, California poppy, ornamental goldenrod, buttercups, clematis, cosmos, crocuses, dahlias, geraniums, globe thistle, and roses.

Let It “Bee”

Fruit trees: Apple, apricot, plum, and cherry.

While many of us do not like the dandelions that take over our lawns, these wild flowers are an essential food staple for bees. Though ridding our lawns of wildflowers can be aesthetically pleasing, this action destroys a necessary food source for bees. This season, ignore the wildflowers and “let it bee”.

Non-fruiting trees: Holly, magnolia, maple, and willow.

The Buzz Around the Water Cooler Bees need fresh, clean water to drink. You can help by creating a water source for them to return to each day. Choose a simple, shallow container and fill it with rocks that stick up above the water line. Replenish the water daily, leaving parts of the rocks exposed, and

Vegetables: Cucumbers, green beans, green peas, sweet peas, squash, and pumpkins. Both the tips and the plants provided in this article are just a starting point. Please look online to learn about more bee-friendly options!

Sanity saving tips for moving day.

NO ONE CAN DISPUTE that the days leading up to and including moving day can be stressful. But the truth is they don’t have to be. If you are planning a move in the near future, here are some do-ahead strategies to help make everything run as smoothly as possible. 1. STOP ACCUMULATING Avoid purchasing new clothes, toys or nonperishable food. Make it your personal mission to eat your way through everything in your pantry and cupboards so there’s less to pack 2. EAT WELL Put a priority on buying fresh produce, even if it means a quick stop at the grocery store on the way home from work. You’ll all feel better and have more energy. 3. PLAN FOR BREAKS Plan for opportunities of relaxation for the whole family so you can focus and renew your energy. 4. ASSIGNMENT TASKS Assign family members manageable daily tasks. Make it fun for kids by writing small jobs on sticky notes - different colors for different rooms. Put them on a “project wall” and let them pick what they want to do today. It’s a great way for them to see how they contribute to the efforts. 5. KEEP IT SIMPLE

Do a load of laundry every night, and always clean up the kitchen counter. Don’t feel guilty about using paper plates well in advance of moving day. No guilt. Plant a tree after you move, and swear off paper plates for the next year to make up for it.

6. ESTABLISH A SANCUTARY Always keep your bedroom clean; you need and deserve a sanctuary from the chaos. Make a commitment that your bedroom stays a move-free zone. Whenever a packing activity occurs in the bedroom, send those boxes out to the holding zone. 7. LAYERED PACKING Pack in layers – literally. Either you need something in the next 30 days or you don’t. What you need, you keep out. What you don’t need pack it up. Have no mercy. With each passing week, pack up another layer of what you won’t need during the remaining time in your house. 8. PLAN AHEAD FOR MEALS Planning ahead for meals can save you time, stress and money. Before the real chaos of a move begins, make a few casseroles and soups and store them in the freezer.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WITH A 401(K) WHEN LEAVING A JOB? IN THE PAST, many people stayed at one job, or at least one company, for almost their entire working lives. When they retired, they could typically count on a pension, the value of which was based on their years of service and earnings. But today, workers can expect to hold several different jobs in their lifetime, and to a great extent, pensions have been replaced by 401(k) plans, which place much of the funding responsibility on employees. So, assuming you will change jobs at some point, and you do have a 401(k), what should you do with it? Here are your basic choices: • Cash out your plan. If you cash out your plan, your company will likely pay you 80% of your account value, withholding the rest for federal taxes. And if you’re younger than age 59½, you may well be slapped with a 10% IRS tax penalty. Even worse, you’ll have lost a key source of your retirement income. Still, if you are leaving your employer involuntarily, and you need the money, cashing out your 401(k) is an option you may need to consider. • Keep the money in your company’s plan. When you leave a company, your employer may allow you to keep your money in your existing 401(k). You may want to choose this route if you like the investment choices available in your plan. However, you might be caught by surprise if the company decides to change investment options. Furthermore, some employers may charge former employees fees to maintain their 401(k) plans. • Move the money into your new employer’s plan. If your new employer has a 401(k) and allows transfers, you could roll the money from your old plan into the new one. This might be an attractive option if you like

the investment options in your new employer’s plan. • Roll the money over to an IRA. You may find several advantages to rolling your 401(k) over to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). First, your money will still have the potential to grow on a tax-deferred basis. Second, you can invest your funds in virtually any investment you choose — stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs), etc. Third, if you own more than one 401(k) account, you could find it advantageous to consolidate them into a single IRA, thereby making it easier to allocate and monitor your retirement assets. And fourth, IRAs may give you greater flexibility if you plan to pass money to your children. In fact, if your child inherits your IRA, he or she has the option of stretching withdrawals over the child’s entire lifetime, rather than taking the money as a lump sum. (If you do transfer funds from your old 401(k) to an IRA, be sure to use a “direct rollover” to avoid the possibility of triggering unwanted taxes.)

HOME OFFICE ORGANIZATION

Clearing the clutter can translate to higher productivity. By Patty Hutchens.

Set time aside daily to tidy up. Coming into an organized office space to start each work day can do a great deal for one’s motivation.

IT CAN BE A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE. Papers and mail piling on the kitchen counter; the closets are overflowing; or the garage no longer has room for that which it was intended – parking cars. When our surroundings are disorganized and cluttered, it can lead to chaos within us. And if all this clutter finds its way into your home office, it can be daunting and overwhelming. After all, there’s always time to clean the garage or closets, but your home office is somewhere you find yourself each day and is where you strive to be as productive as possible. Here are some tips to help ensure that your office space stays as organized as possible: •

Create a filing system. Make sure everything has its place. If there are things that need immediate attention, place them in a separate place than those items that you will attend to in the future. But don’t simply put things in separate piles on your desk; have a separate place in your office whether it’s a filing cabinet, a bookshelf or credenza. Designate a home for each and every type of paperwork: bills to be paid, client projects, notes and ideas, and business cards. Every single piece of paper needs a home and a specified time on your calendar when you are going to pay attention to it.

Set time aside daily to tidy up. Coming into an organized office space to start each work day can do a great deal for one’s motivation. Set aside ten minutes at the end of each day to clean and de-

clutter your office. Throw away junk mail, update your calendar and file away any papers that you need to keep. •

Clear your visual space. Sit and your desk and take a look around. What is it htat you see? Is it clutter or things that inspire you? Clear your visual space of any and all clutter, including filing and containment systems. A clean desk can be inviting for papers to pile up so instead put some creative placeholders there. Family pictures or a plant are some good options. Purchase items to help you get and stay organized. Take a trip to your local office supply store or even places like Target to buy some inexpensive items to help you get and stay organized. Make it an opportunity to add some decorative touches to your

home office. No longer are there only wire baskets and plain colored filing bins. It’s a chance to get creative, add some flair to your office and become organized at the same time! •

Be realistic. There are some things that we hold onto even though we know we will not use them. If you start to accumulate too much “stuff ” take time and do an inventory of your office. You may be surprised at how much you have on hand that you don’t use.

You may think it takes extra time and money to become and stay organized, but the reality is that when our offices are organized and tidy, we feel better and can be much more productive. Start today - get out your calendar and pencil in some decluttering time!

immunity and can be reinfected at any time by another mosquito bite, so prevention after treatment is essential.

Cats and dogs can become infected with heartworm from mosquito bites. All cats and dogs are susceptible to heartworm, no matter their age or state of health. It is important to protect your pet regardless of where you live as heartworm disease has been found in every state.

While many pets don’t display symptoms in the early stages, a dog with heartworm disease can show signs including: coughing, fainting, weight loss or difficulty breathing. If left undetected and untreated, heartworm disease can cause sudden death by blocking blood flow to the heart. In dogs, heartworm treatment involves slowly killing the worms without harming the pet. Cats tend to have fewer worms, but their effect can be just as devastating. Currently, no heartworm treatment exists for cats.

When an infected mosquito bites a pet, it transmits heartworm larvae, which mature into long adult heartworms that can live in the heart and surrounding vessels for several years. The number of heartworms living within the heart can be astounding; up to 250 heartworms have been found in a single dog. Pets treated for heartworm don’t develop

Fortunately, heartworm disease is completely and easily preventable. Administering an oral monthly heartworm preventative, or having

your veterinarian give an injection every six months, will kill immature heartworms before they mature and are able to inflict damage to the pet. Veterinarians suggest pet owners get their pets tested for heartworms and then discuss prevention or treatment if necessary. The test is quick and simple and requires only a drop of your pet’s blood. Only a veterinarian can prescribe heartworm preventive, and he or she will make sure your pet gets the appropriate protection.

Western Pleasure Guest Ranch

Weekend Getaway. By Colin Anderson. Photos courtesy Western Pleasure Guest Ranch. MODERN CONVENIENCES have come to define life as we know it. Smart phones and tablets give us access to information anytime and anywhere. While convenient, these devices can distract us from seeing what’s going on right in front of us. They can also block communication among family members leading parents to look for a place to ‘unplug’ when planning their next vacation. Nature is one of the best places to accomplish this. Instead of the stimulation of a large city, you are otherwise surrounded by forests, fresh water, wildlife, and nature’s TV - the campfire. While there are hundreds of campsites and cabins to choose from, few places offer the comfort, seclusion, activities, and experience of Western Pleasure Guest Ranch. With five generations calling the ranch home since 1940, Western Pleasure Guest Ranch offers its guests a year round look into the everyday life of today’s ranchers. The property is filled with history of the region, beautiful views of the Cabinet and Selkirk Mountains, and a friendly staff that boasts incredible knowledge of the area. Set just 16 miles from downtown Sandpoint, Idaho WPGR has the feel like you’re miles from anywhere. The property covers 1,100 acres and is adjacent to thousands more, filled with trails, wildlife, sweeping views, and adventure. The center of the ranch is the beautiful ten thousand square foot grand lodge. The lodge is made from local timber and features six guest rooms, each with a private bath, ideal for couples or those traveling with a young child. The lodge includes a recreation room with a pool table and movies, shared great room, and a large loft. Outside you will find a hot tub, basketball court, playground and more. WPGR also offers four cabins for rent. Each is fully furnished, includes a kitchen, bathroom, porch, and wood stove. These cabins offer beautiful views of the meadow

There are approximately 50 horses all of which are trained on-site and ideal for inexperienced riders. Professional wranglers will teach you the basics and be your guides as you explore hundreds of acres. During the summer there are morning and afternoon rides including one that takes you to a great swimming hole. There is also a dinner ride, lessons in the arena, arena games, and more. The children’s program teaches 8 to 18 year olds proper handling. At the end of the week, kids will take part in a live show with demonstrations, awards, and ribbons. When winter rolls around horse drawn sleigh rides offer a unique experience that ends with dinner and live entertainment. If you prefer to explore on foot, you will find plenty of hiking trails. You can also arrange
