PUBLISHER What can YOU do?
OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, it has become a common theme that has permeated its way through our society. The “sense of entitlement” so many people feel is seen in all generations and economic classes. And while President John F. Kennedy said over five decades ago, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” the feeling that we are owed something by society is as prevalent as ever. In the current environment of political campaigns, the question abounds. What is it this candidate will do for ME? I urge you to really stop and think about it. Why would our country, state or community owe us anything? The truth is the only thing we as citizens should expect is that which we have already been blessed with – the freedom to choose how we live our lives and the abundant opportunities we are afforded. It’s time we all should stop and think about what we as individuals can offer our country, state and community to make it a better place for everyone. This month we celebrate Memorial Day. There is no better example of people who have given of themselves than our current and former members of the military. If it were not for their sacrifices, we would not be given the freedom and opportunities we have today. So next time you hear someone express a sense of entitlement, stop and remind them that change starts within themselves. And as citizens of this great country, let’s all remember to thank those who have served in the military.
“WHERE FA M I LY I S A LWAY S F I RST. ” “We are committed to providing professional, compassionate assistance in a safe and nurturing environment, ensuring a life of dignity and independence for seniors in our community.”

Practical Living

MOTHER KNOWS BEST PART ONE OF A TWO-PART SERIES
“Nature doesn’t have a design problem. People do.” —McDonough & Braungart MOTHER NATURE HAS BEEN IGNORED for too long. In fact, the industrial age could have taken some of mom’s advice! Some may consider billions of years of evolution as sage wisdom. How does nature work? Everything is connected through ecosystems, from large to small, to form the conditions for life. An ecosystem consists of soil, air, sun, water, plants, insects, animals and other living organisms. The more diverse a species, the more resilience exists in the community. In a nutshell, biomimicry literally mimics nature; a process where we look at nature’s solutions to improve our human design problems. In this new era of learning from nature rather than destroying it, we seek sustainable solutions that will make our built environment healthier, more resilient and bring us a better quality of life.

Can biomimicry really help us design and make better products? Is it possible to borrow the blueprints of life? According to Janine Benyus, who coined the term “biomimicry” in 1997, there are currently two approaches when applying biomimetic design to designing products: the biology-todesign approach and the design-to-biology approach. Within that framework, three levels of practicing biomimicry exist. The first level involves designing to mimic natural forms. The second level mimics the natural process of how the form was made. The third level works toward mimicking the natural ecosystems. The lotus flower provides great inspiration. Employing the biology-to-design approach, designers discovered how small bumps combined with waxy crystals allowed for dirt to be swept away by water. “The lotus effect” is now employed in a myriad of self-cleaning building

products including glass, roofing, paint and textiles. Conversely, in the design-to-biology approach, the process begins with a human design challenge. In this case, we identify the desired function and then research how this function occurs naturally in organisms or ecosystems. For example, do we really want the stuff we buy to last forever? Will future generations desire the same goods? Probably not. Here’s a design-tobiology solution:
ADU* *accessory dwelling unit
In a nutshell, biomimicry literally mimics nature; a process where we look at nature’s solutions to improve our human design problems.
How amazing would it be to be able to deconstruct products so that they may easily be used for the product’s evolution? At the University of Manchester, Andre Geim has modeled a tape based on the dry physical adhesion of a gecko. Studying the tiny bristles on geckos’ feet that allow it to adhere to surfaces may allow us to design for disassembly. Gecko glue is on the horizon!
You name it. tiny house, granny suite, backyard cottage, sidekick-in-law, attached or detached, basement apartment, compact design, small footprint housing, love shack, on-grid-off-grid
We build it.
Whether we look for solutions either from a biology-to-design or from a design-to-biology approach, we may encounter solutions by simply by looking at what exists around us naturally. Mother Knows Best Part Two will explore biomimetic buildings right here in the Pacific Northwest!

GIVE DONATE SELL
ARE YOU CHALLENGED by the daunting task of downsizing and choosing which household goods and treasures you’ll take with you to a new home?
and memorabilia can be challenging for the novice. Here are a few suggested definitions from “Toss, Keep or Sell” by author Harry L. Rinker:
If so, start with three questions, courtesy of author Harry L. Rinker. Does it mean so much to me that I cannot bear to part with it? Do I need it for day-to-day living? Is it worth paying the price to move?
An “antique” can be defined as an object made before 1963. A “collectible” is an object made between 1961 and 1980. Antiques and collectibles have a stable secondary retail market. You can research values and trust them.
If you answered yes to those, then it is time for the reality check. Will it fit? Downsizing is truly a math game: a 3,000 square foot house will not fit into a 900 square foot apartment. So, what do you do with items you won’t be taking with you? Most individuals use a combination of giving to loved ones, donating and selling items. For many, the “selling” part feels complicated, time-consuming and downright overwhelming. In a nutshell, there are a few resale options. After you move out, estate sales are held inside your home and are ideal when you have a combination of volume, value and accessibility. Auction services are a great solution to use prior to a move, allowing you to sell items as you sort. Some antique stores will offer you a consignment option for select pieces. But how do you know what is valuable and what isn’t? Navigating the secondary (resale) market for collections, treasures
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
22
A “desirable” is an object made between 1980 and the present. The secondary market for desirables is speculative – meaning that the value is in a constant state of flux: for example, Beanie Babies. A “reusable” is an antique, collectible or desirable whose primary value is reuse. The vast majority of the objects you will be dealing with fall into this category; their value to buyers is in continued usefulness and is usually five to ten cents on the dollar. Based on these tips, review your treasures to determine if the income potential outweighs the investment of your time. Some Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC), will provide future residents with the personalized services of a Move-In Coordinator to provide expertise and guidance, offer referrals and resources and help future residents connect with a reputable auction or estate sale expert. Start as early as possible, so you have time to consider all options.
FINANCIAL FOCUS
N E W LY W E D S
CONVERSATION ABOUT FINANCES IS IMPORTANT FOR NEWLYWEDS
Make Your Financial Future a Priority.
ARTICLE PROVIDED BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY FINANCIAL ADVISOR ERIN ABRIGO OF GIG HARBOR
JUNE IS A POPULAR MONTH for weddings. If you’re getting married soon, you no doubt have many exciting details to discuss with your spouse-to-be. But after you get back from the honeymoon, you’ll want to have another discussion — about your finances. It might not sound glamorous, but couples who quickly “get on the same page” regarding their financial situation are actually taking a step that can help them immensely as they build their lives together. As you start talking about your finances, be sure to cover these areas: • Separate or joint checking/savings accounts — Some couples create joint checking and savings accounts, others keep everything separate and still others find a middle ground — joint accounts along with smaller, separate accounts. There’s really no one “right” way for everyone, but whichever method you choose, make sure you’re both aware of where your money is, how it can be accessed, and by whom. • Debts — Both you and your spouse may be bringing in debts, such as student loans or credit cards, to the marriage. You don’t necessarily have to do everything possible to get rid of these debts immediately, but you should set up reasonable payment plans that will allow you to lower your overall debt load so you can free up money to invest for the future. • Spending and saving — Newlyweds are often surprised to discover how different they are from each other in the area of spending versus saving. You don’t have to try to radically change each other, but you both need to be aware that your spending and saving decisions now have greater consequences than when you
were both single. To illustrate: If one of you is more of a spender and is used to running up big credit card bills, these actions can clearly affect both of you. To avoid problems of this type, you will need to communicate clearly with each other. • Goals — It’s important for married couples to clearly establish their financial goals. Do you want to purchase a house? If so, when? If you’re going to have children, will you want to help them pay for college? When do each of you want to retire? And what sort of retirement lifestyle do you have in mind? By answering these and other key questions, you’ll be formulating a set of goals. And from there, you can devise a strategy for attaining these goals. • Investment styles — Both you and your spouse will unquestionably need to invest if you are going to achieve your goals, such as a comfortable retirement. However, each of you may have a different investment style. For example, one of you might be an aggressive investor, willing to take more risk for the possibility of greater returns, while the other is more conservative, ready to accept lower returns in exchange for greater preservation of principal. To pursue your strategy for reaching your objectives, each of you may have to compromise somewhat on your “investment personality.” To achieve this balance, you may need to consult with a financial advisor. Finances are an important part of any marriage. By communicating regularly and working together, you and your spouse can build a solid financial foundation for your lives together.

GO SLOW TO GO FAST BUILDING TRUST TRUST CAN BY DEBORAH OLIVE
BE EARNED
KEEP YOUR WORD TRUST, LIKE OIL IN AN ENGINE, is required to keep the parts from seizing up and keeps everything running smoothly.
increases positive expectancy and impacts our lives in both social and business settings.
Consider a time in your life when everything lined up. Were you on a team where everyone counted on one another? From work teams to sports teams, from family interactions to serving on committees, as our confidence in one another increases, things get easier. When we trust our ideas will be well received, we’re more generous. We feel good when the “count on me” factor is high and our efforts align to achieve a common goal.
Fortunately, trust can be learned, taught and practiced. Building trust can take months or even years; though it can be lost in an instant. However, we can re-build trust. It’s advisable not to assume trust and to remember that trust building is a practice where going slow often means going fast. Brené Brown, speaker, researcher and author of “Daring Greatly,” tells the story about her third grade daughter who was crushed after trusting a friend with a secret that “everyone in school” knew by lunch. She declared, “I’m never going to trust anyone with my secrets again.” As a fifth generation Texan with the motto of “lock and load,” Brown says she had to fight the tendency to tell her daughter, “that’s right.” Instead she asked, “Have you ever shared a secret with a friend and it turned out well?” Of course, the answer was “Yes.” Brown helped her daughter explore the differences between the experiences that turned out well and those that didn’t. She reminded her daughter about the “Marble Jar.”
“Count on me” experiences also happen when we’re alone. From gardening to computers, from working out to artistic expression consistently applying ourselves builds trust and motivates us to continue. Our confidence grows. When everything lines up, as an individual, team or enterprise, trust is high and rising. I’ll leave it to you to answer, “Which comes first: trust or everything lining up?” At one time or another we have experienced low trust environments. We check and double check to make sure things are done right. We get frustrated. Talk frequently turns to blame. We have a tendency to hold back and to protect. Progress nearly grinds to a stop as we seek to avoid criticism – whether from others or from ourselves. Creativity and innovation nearly disappear. Conversely, high trust accelerates results,
One of her daughter’s teachers had a large jar in the classroom. She placed a marble in the jar when someone added to the class experience and removed a marble when someone distracted from the class experience. When the jar filled with marbles, the teacher celebrated the
MARBLE JAR FRIENDS
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

When we feel betrayed, it’s common to make such a declaration – whether aloud or to ourselves. It’s more skillful to adopt the idea of “Marble Jar Friends” and to practice being that person as well. Remember, trust can be learned, taught and practiced. Here are some specific behaviors that build trust: • Keep your word – no excuses. We’re all human, so if something changes, it’s skillful to be proactive and renegotiate your promise. Sooner is better. • Tell the truth – even when it’s difficult or embarrassing.

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL
PHS DRAMA SHINES BRIGHT Bustling program shines through “Les Mis,” and more. By Jon Johansen
THREE YEARS AGO, Kara Beloate became the director of Peninsula High School’s theater program.
have even “caught the bug”: PHS now has 22 moms and dads signed up for the Peninsula Players Booster Club!
She immediately drew upon more than two decades in the dramatic arts to establish worthy goals. With the aid of stellar supporters like Cheryl Graf, those ambitions are coming to fruition.
Beloate’s description of drama gives an idea of why so many in the program are energized: “I always say that theater is where we learn the most about ourselves, because it is where we are the most connected to others, whether on the page through script work, or on the stage with ensemble or technical work. Theater allows us to experience life more fully; we get to live through the experiences of others, those which we may never otherwise get the opportunity to live − and ultimately, that is the greatest gift [sic].”
Beloate’s bunch has increased the number of young men and women involved in the troupe and has raised the group’s level of practical support. Her crew has simultaneously elevated participants’ pride in the program while developing skilled actors, singers, technicians and stagehands. Others are starting to notice.
Community members will have a chance to see this for themselves as The Peninsula players perform “Les Misérables” this month.
Out of 125 participating state schools in 2015, PHS drama won Outstanding Lobby Display for the “living statues” arrangement accompanying the musical “Aida.” Moreover, Beloate and Makenna Nelson were nominated for Best Choreography in the same show.
The shows are on May 5 to 7, and 13 to 14 and begin at 7pm. The musical closes with a 3pm performance on May 15 (ticket sales and concessions open one hour prior).
With such success, it is easy to see why students are excited. Heck, parents

SPIRITS WITH SOUL Local liquor store provides unique selection BY PATTY HUTCHENS WHEN BRADLEY LEVINE first opened The Liquor Cabinet in December of 2013, he said he was so nervous that he accidentally set off the alarm. “It was the most nerve wracking feeling to put everything on the line to do what you love,” said Levine. But what started out as a risk has turned into one of the best decisions he has made. In just a short time Levine has established a reputation as a place where customers can get the best selection that any purveyor of spirits could want.
buying has a lot more flexibility allowing me to purchase new, eclectic and very tasty items.” Another distinguishing feature of The Liquor Cabinet is that the final price, including all taxes, is listed on the tag. “Customers have voiced their approbation of this method as they do not have to guesstimate the final price of a bottle,” said Levine. “At first some people’s eyes get wide thinking it’s more expensive than other places. Then they realize that the out-the-door price is listed on the tags and smile. It seems like a relief knowing what they’re going to pay instead of fearing the final price at the checkout stand.”
“There was an evolution process to buying items,” Levine said as it is his responsibility to provide options to his customers. “The more the customer had an input of what went onto the shelves, the more the store became a partnership between myself and the community. The specialty items are an amalgamation of spirits, beer and wine that meet both my approval and the approval of my customers.” He chooses what he stocks not by what is the most popular, but because they are unique and special in some way. “In that way,” said Levine, “it’s not just a liquor store, but it’s a liquor store with some soul.”
Levine said he thoroughly enjoys living in Gig Harbor and is grateful he decided to follow his dream here. Previously a federal investigator, Levine said he tried to decide between opening a bar or a liquor store, and in the end the liquor store won. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve gotten to know this beautiful and vibrant place,” said Levine who attributes his success to the community that has supported him. “Without them or their input, the store would not exist,” said Levine. “The Liquor Cabinet is special in that I care about what products are carried and that the consumer has a positive experience while shopping. They can go anywhere, however, they are greeted here, are provided an environment where any and all questions will be answered, and hopefully, find a bottle or beer that they go home, open up, and enjoy until the last drop.”
Levine also feels personally responsible to each and every person that walks through the door to ensure that they leave with a product of their liking. In this sense he is a matchmaker, providing guidance when necessary so each individual will wind up with a libation to enjoy. The Liquor Cabinet is unique in part because the new items are all specially hand selected for a specified reason. Levine cites as an example when Jameson Irish Whisky stopped producing its 18-year whiskey. “I saw the item in the catalog and jokingly ordered four cases not thinking it would arrive. It did and customers who love Jameson are afforded an opportunity to buy the last of those beloved bottles,” said Levine who also has enjoyed experimenting with the increasing variety of beer available.

“One of my beer representatives had told me he never placed this one beer, Fogcutter, in any of his accounts. After doing research, it seemed like a good investment and three months later is one of my best selling IPAs,” said Levine. “Since I make unilateral purchasing decisions, my

THERE’S ALWAYS GLITTER ON SOMETHING
FROM DANGER TO DREAMS By Jon Johansen
“Misty morning, Early morning dreams. Hope that somewhere, Sunlight is peeking, Over the trees” - Carina Sherborne
W would live.
hen Carina Sherborne was 12, her mother was almost killed. And at age 16, Sherborne once again wondered if Mama
On that afternoon, during the second scare, Carina huddled in an intensive care unit (ICU) surgical waiting area—alone with her thoughts—waiting for updates about her mother’s dangerous, six-hour surgery. Sadly, those grave moments weren’t the only hard times in the life of this talented, young teacher and musician. I first saw Carina when I visited Gig Harbor’s Pop Star Kids, USA. Clad in a white and gray Rolling Stones shirt, Carina glanced up at me with kind, bluishgreen eyes, and whispered, “Hello.” Mom, Amy DeAngelo, approached next. Her petite frame belied an inner strength evidenced by her firm handshake and direct eye contact. Smiling, she asked, “Would you like a tour?” Carina, now 18, joined us as we worked our way through the simultaneously immaculate and fun space. We padded through an inviting lobby, walked
beside a poster of Sherborne performing for Radio Disney, glimpsed performance halls and settled into a cozy meeting area. There, for the entire interview, mother and daughter gazed into each other’s eyes with what can only be described as a deep, abiding love. DeAngelo broke the ice. “Since she was a baby, we’ve always had something that we say to each other, ‘You are my person,’” she said. Carina chimed in, “Hearing that makes me feel so warm. She’s always been there… the other half of my heart.” DeAngelo continued, “One time, when she was two, she found me crying. She placed both of her hands on my cheeks and said, ‘Mama? It’s okay. I’m here.’” Over ensuing years, a former stepfather’s military deployments took Carina to 16 schools across the western U.S. This gypsylike journey didn’t slow until after an unsafe situation nearly killed DeAngelo. Thankfully, in 2011, a new chapter started for her, Carina, and little brother, Cameron. With no insurance and no savings, Carina and her mother visited a gymnastics school in Port

Orchard. When they found a junk-filled, dusty room upstairs −an idea struck. DeAngelo asked, “What if we started a business here, teaching kids how to classically sing and perform using clean lyrics and appropriate movements?” Two days later the nervous duo marketed at a community event. Carina explains, “We had 15 dollars to our name, a handful of balloons, and a few fliers. But one week later we had 14 students!” To celebrate, they hand blew glitter into the fresh, purple paint in their tiny studio. DeAngelo exclaims, “After Carina turned 13, one day she came to me and said, ‘Mama, on that show, “The X Factor,” you can perform duets!’” Despite an illness, they made it through four rounds and were one step away from appearing on television. It was the first of three television shows that nearly launched them into fame. Back in Pierce County, their company had grown to 40 clients. Alas, sorrow reappeared. DeAngelo’s heart began pounding incessantly. After countless medical appointments, a rare

and advanced form of diabetes was diagnosed. Reliving this at our recent gathering, Carina’s eyes welled as she glanced toward DeAngelo and shared, “You were starving. You had to throw up all the time. You passed out more than once, so I called 911. It was really scary.” DeAngelo leaned forward to touch Carina’s cheek. Both giggled as DeAngelo discovered glitter under her daughter’s right eye.
And they did. For the next three months, a gaggle of friends, clients, strangers and a local church brought food and moved the family into their Gig Harbor home…. But Carina worked hardest. The high school junior paid the bills, mothered her brother, led singing and dancing classes at their Pop Star studio and administered her mother’s seemingly limitless, life-giving medications.
Time goes too fast, I wanna hold on, And make it last. We’ll be all right… And we’ll lay under the stars tonight.
Looking at a miniscule mirror, DeAngelo chuckled and exclaimed, “There’s always glitter on something,” before returning to the story.
Now fully recovered, mother and daughter lead a bustling business while recording Carina’s debut album. I, for one, can’t wait.
It wasn’t until October of 2013 that another answer came. Seattle doctors diagnosed DeAngelo with gastroparesis, a progressive stomach paralysis that also kills nerves in the heart and lungs.
Because at the end of our time together, Carina closed her eyes and poured out a soulful rendition of her original song.
After physicians explained that the condition was unstoppable, DeAngelo called Carina’s biological father to ask, “Whatever happens, promise me that you won’t separate my kids.” In November 2013, DeAngelo drove the children to California to surprise relatives and—unbeknownst to hosts—say goodbye forever. Thankfully, in January 2014 a University of Washington surgeon devised a desperate plan: if they could get an emaciated DeAngelo strong enough, they’d remove half of her intestines and build her a new stomach.

As she came to latter lyrics, her dew-eyed mother quietly joined in: “Misty morning, come out again. Oh it’s summer time And we’ll lay under the stars tonight.” After the life-battered-but-victorious duo verbally shone as brightly as sparkling glitter, they embraced. And I felt honored…just to have been in their presence.

Phillips has been a familiar face in Gig Harbor for nearly 20 years as a member of Canterwood Golf and Country Club. She moved here permanently eight years ago. “I was drawn back by the sense of community, the beauty and the fabulous friends I have developed over many years,” shared Phillips.
Dolly Mama Boutique opened in July of 2014 and has already gained an excellent following for the wide variety of ladies’ apparel, accessories and jewelry they carry. “We carry popular brand names such as Free People, Lisette, PJ Salvage, Hobo, Grace & Lace, Golftini, and some specialty brands that you won’t find anywhere else,” said Phillips who adds that they also provide gift wrapping, shipping and personalized customer service.
She has a deep sense of gratitude for those that have made her business successful, including her mom, Barbara Simmons, who was her original business partner and now offers her help when needed. She credits her Dolly Mama team, including store manager Laurie Ness and production manager Geri Hotchkiss, with supporting her and treating the business as their own. “I honestly cannot say enough about these fabulous women! And wait until you see all of the changes to come,” said Phillips. “We have four new talented women joining our team when the Home & Gallery opens mid-May!”
Considered the “Nordstroms of Gig Harbor,” Phillips and her staff at Dolly Mama pride themselves on treating their customers like gold, offering coffee and refreshments, wish lists for personalized gift shopping and much more. They know their customers’ tastes and desires well and continually provide a fresh selection of on-trend basics and specialty pieces. And when you have a good thing going, why not bring customers even more of what they want? That is what has prompted Phillips to expand the Boutique and open Dolly Mama Home & Gallery in mid-May.

GIG HARBOR’S
RELAY FOR LIFE Celebrating 20 years – Get in on the fun and save lives at the same time By Lynette Hoy
ccording to cancer.org, it is estimated that there were 38,180 newly diagnosed cancer cases in Washington state for 2015 or nearly 105 cases each day. This statistic excludes basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers and in situ carcinomas except urinary bladder. Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society is saving nearly 500 people a day, due to the efforts of people like you and me. I lost my aunt after a 10-year battle with lung cancer. We all know the pain on some level. One in every 100 Americans participates in one of the 5,000 American Cancer Society Relay For Life events across the globe, comprising the world’s largest movement to end cancer. In Gig Harbor, the population is nearly 7,500, and last year they raised $300,000. The dedication of this small community is unparalleled. If you have never been involved with Relay For Life, this is your year.
A
“Gig Harbor is small but mighty,” says Stephanie Hahn, volunteer and community chair for Relay For Life (for four years running, great commitment!). It unites communities to celebrate people who have battled cancer and won, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all. What is on your agenda this year for living? Perhaps a trip to Europe with the family, climb Mt. Everest or jump out of an airplane? Maybe you have not planned a life experience or set a milestone at all. Relay For Life is such an event where you can get involved to save lives and create a milestone for yourself. Flat Tire and No Gas – A Story That Might Just be You All of us get caught up in the day-to-day of getting up, taking a shower, feeding ourselves, our kids, (and consider what it might be like if your hair fell out and there was nothing to brush, not to mention not having the energy to do it anyway) rushing out the door to find you have a flat tire and your significant other did not put gas in the car the night before. Can you feel it? In the moment of chaos and more than unhappy, possibly not-so-lovely verbiage escapes from your mouth, as your children stare with mouths wide open…and then the phone rings and life changes in a moment.

Pam Massey, owner of Alexei Salon in Gig Harbor, had one of those life changing moments, and handled it well because of the support she received from everyone she met with Relay For Life, and others at the American Cancer Society. She is part of “Team Alexei” and is also a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2012. Her first Survivor’s Lap that June reinforced why people get involved and participate in Relay For Life. “The support I received from the American Cancer Society staff, fellow Relayers, the local medical community, family and friends was tremendous. It made my journey easier than I could have imagined. And in 2014 I was deeply honored to receive the American Cancer Society’s Hero of Hope award. It is given to a survivor they feel has made a contribution to and has a deep understanding of Relay for Life; my hero in all this has been and will always be Dr. Gordy Klatt, who founded Relay.” Relay For Life Began Locally. It began In May of 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern, cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer. Impressive! Life sustaining! It is a fun, organized overnight community fundraising walk, with loads of fun, games and activities for the whole family. Teams of people camp out around a track and walk through the night and into the next day. For all the information on this year’s event, visit the Relay page at www.relayforlife.org/gigharborwa. This year, the event will be at Peninsula High School, from 6pm on June 17 to 12pm on June 18. CenturyLink is sponsoring a big blow-up pirate ship, and there will be face painting and other activities as well as food trucks. There are other great sponsors coming on board soon. Because it’s a team event, individual participants are not required to be there the entire time. But it’s so much fun, you’ll find it hard to leave! Why not create a team with your family? Make it fun with a purpose. Teach your children well. Many people feel that they have to raise money to be a part of Relay For Life (which partners with the American Cancer Society). Many people just come to show their support and cheer on the walkers. Relay For Life is on the Agenda!

Relay for Life is one of those possibilities for a “full glass.” Getting involved to help others, to give back, slow down and laugh and help others laugh, and celebrate that we have a life to create a wonderful agenda of activities. When some of those activities are giving back and thinking beyond ourselves, life takes on a new meaning – it suddenly has meaning. When the tire is flat and the car has no gas, next time you might just laugh it off. Seriously! American Cancer Society Gig Harbor Celebrates 20 Years Hosting the Relay For Life Event! Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature event, has been around for 31 years. In Gig Harbor, this year marks 20 years, and it will be a grand celebration! From 1991 to 2012, the cancer death rate dropped 23 percent because of reductions in smoking, as well as improvements in early detection and treatment. This decline translates into the avoidance of more than 1.7 million cancer deaths. With support from people like the moms on the Relay team, and donors like you, we can help extend that trend to other forms of cancer, like the ovarian cancer that took my mom,” says Melissa Oman, Relay For Life

SENIOR ERIKA HETTICK said when it comes to running track and cross country, she has had to overcome her lack of confidence. “My previous running coach, Wingard, and my current coach, Nugent, have helped me to see that I am better than I think I am and helped me to become the runner I am today,” said Erika. Ranked 19th in her class of 340 students with a cumulative GPA of 3.88, Erika received her varsity letter in cross country all four years of high school and competed at state her sophomore and senior years. “I have also earned my varsity letter in track all three years and am on schedule to earn my fourth this year,” she said. Erika will attend Olympic College in the fall where she will also run cross country and track. Once she earns her associate’s degree, she plans to transfer to Washington State University where she will study food science. Erika shared that it is the experience of training with her friends and racing with them that she enjoys most about her sports. “I’ve made so many lifelong friends and had

The whole aspect of cross country and track is amazing,” she said. “We all push each other to be better and to be the best we can be.” She has leanred many lessons along the way, but one in particular will carry her through life. “Whatever you put into it is what you will get out of it,” said Erika about both sports and life.

JORDAN ADAMS: A JUNIOR AT GIG HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL, Jordan Adams has played on the varsity softball team since she was a freshman and also serves as team captain. The honors she has received include second team All-League her freshman year as well as Rookie of the Year. Her sophomore year she was awarded first team All-League and also received the Sportsmanship Award. “We also made it to state for the first time my sophomore year since the 1990s,” said Jordan. Playing competitive sports and balancing academics has been difficult for her at times, but she believes it will help her be a wellrounded person in college and beyond. “You have to sacrifice a lot of your free time to play at a competitive level, but it’s been an investment that I am proud of,” said Jordan. Although she still has one more year of high school, Jordan is looking forward to the future. She has accepted a verbal offer to play softball at Portland State University.

Today’s composers are the creators of classical music for future generations By Dan Aznoff | Photos courtesy of Dane Gregory Meyer and Tacoma Symphony Orchestra
he new conductor of the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra believes that it is her responsibility to perform the music written by modern day composers alongside the works of Brahms and Beethoven so their music will be considered classical by students in 100 years.
ABOVE Sarah Ioannides is the new conductor for the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra.
Sarah Ioannides is convinced that art and music will continue to be the measures by which civilization is judged. Following that theme, she believes that promoting the works of current composers will leave a legacy that will survive long after tall buildings and political philosophies are a distant memory. “Music is the voice of the people, and not everybody has the talent or the gift to create music,” Ioannides told Local Living 360. “I would be doing this community a disservice if I did not serve as the voice for today’s composers. It is fascinating to watch and listen to the work of our living composers, whether it is seeing the performance live or watching a video in a theater.”

RIGHT “It is our job to bring music to the people that they will enjoy, otherwise the orchestra will be performing to empty seats,” Ioannides said.
RIGHT “I would be doing this community a disservice if I did not serve as the voice for today’s composers,” Ioannides said.
The new conductor began her outreach to the community in February by conducting the Tacoma Symphony for a performance at the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church in Gig Harbor. She hopes the orchestra will schedule other dates beyond its home at The Pantages Theater during the upcoming season. “We creatures are simply not beings!” Ioannides wrote on her website. “As we explore, we reflect, we grow…music is a great place to do all of this.” Ioannides has “broken the glass podium,” according to the Los Angeles Times by becoming one of only six female conductors of major symphony orchestra in the country. She began her journey to the front of the orchestra in 1990 as a student at Oxford University in England on a musical instrument scholarship by playing the French horn, piano, violin “and a little guitar just for fun.” She earned her first baton as musical director of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra just two years later. Since then has conducted 35 of the world’s premiere orchestras in the U.S. and around the world over the past quarter century. …And even a little rap Her passion for music is not limited to the classical masters. She admits that her personal
musical tastes have been influenced over the years of enjoying pop, jazz “and even a little rap.” “Our concerts will often include the works of Mozart, Brahms and many of the Dutch composers. But good music is good music,” Ioannides said with a smile. “It is our job to bring music to the people that they will enjoy, otherwise the orchestra will be performing to empty seats.” Ioannides was inspired to enter the maledominated profession at the age of 17 by her mother who instructed the teenager to “follow her passion and become what you know in your heart is where you belong.” The future maestro studied with some of the great conductors around the world, beginning with her father who conducted choirs and directed operas on the isle of Cypress and in Finland. She described her studies under other conductors as “awesome,” adding that she learned how to transform a group of individual musicians into a well-tuned orchestra. Part of that learning process, she said, was to understand how important the role of conductor can be at rehearsal and during a performance. As an advocate of music education and a

passionate linguist, Ioannides worked with students of all ages as a private instrument instructor, advisor, guest conductor and orchestral trainer with numerous conservatories, including the Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana, the Chicago College of Performing Arts, the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina, at the Verbier

Festival in Switzerland and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. “Being part of so many wonderful musical ensembles has given me the perspective to appreciate each city and each community for what music can provide to its citizens,” said Ioannides. “Being a woman just adds another view to appreciate and enjoy.” The new conductor’s goals for the Tacoma orchestra match the strategic plan outlined by the symphony’s strategic plan developed by its board of directors that centers around the words Vibrancy and Relevance. Vibrancy: Introduce new artistic leadership; build ownership and pride throughout the orchestra; transform concerts into events where the ensemble and the audience fully connect. Relevance: Placing the organization at the service of community needs. Ioannides compared her role with the orchestra to being the coach on the sidelines or in the dugout for a sports team: part leader and part teacher. She stressed that an orchestra is more than a collection of individual musicians. They are, she said, interpreters of a complex language that spans hundreds of years of wonderful compositions that she characterized as “works of art.” “It’s always important to set the standard high for every section of the orchestra and for each performer,” she said. “In the end, we all strive for perfection. And it is my job to help each member of the orchestra attain their best that their talent will allow.” Before she set out on the professional path that led has led to the podium in Tacoma, Ioannides won the Leeds Conductors Competition and was awarded the JoAnn Falletta Award for the most promising female conductor. As musical director for the symphony orchestra in El Paso from 2005 to 2011, Ioannides took pride in introducing renowned soloists and innovative musicians to audiences in Texas. She was also instrumental in creating partnerships and educational programs within the community. Her work was described as “bringing excellence, innovation, collaboration and diversity.” From deep in Texas, Ioannides moved on to take the baton of the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra in South Carolina, where the
local press praised her by proclaiming, “The orchestra and its Music Director Sarah Ioannides offered compelling proof of the value and importance of an orchestra” to an entire region. “Yes, my music has taken me to some wonderful places in this country and around the world,” she explained. “Each city is unique and each city has something wonderful to offer to the world of art and music.” Right place at the right time The conductor emphasized that she is thrilled with the challenge and the opportunity that Tacoma has given to her “at the right time in my life.” She quickly mentioned her daughter Audrey, 6, and 4-year-old twins Elsa and Karl, as being important factors in her decision to accept the offer to move her family to the Northwest. Ioannides is married to Scott Hartman, who is a professor of trombone at Yale School of Music.

“I truly consider myself a citizen of the world. Each city provides a different color on the portrait that is my life,” she said. “The beauty of Tacoma and the quality of the life in this area make this a place I can easily consider calling home for my family. This is a great place to raise my children and the quality of the orchestra is extraordinary.” Dan Aznoff was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the toxic waste crisis. The benefits of small group training. By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor THE PROSPECT OF STARTING a healthier life is intimidating. It’s going to take effort, sacrifice and a personal acknowledgment that maybe some of life’s problems are a direct result of the way said life is lived. The idea that it is going to require a change of daily rituals, especially if it will require substantial exertion, is difficult. But even beyond that, when pondering that you want to be healthier an even bigger question erupts. How? There are so many options and opinions that even though you know you need to do something to increase your quality of life, you don’t know who to listen to or what to do. My opinion? Small group training with a qualified coach is by far the best way to go.
Let’s first think about what your other options are: Do Nothing - Yes, this is actually the most common decision made. We have all made this mistake at one point in our lives and nothing good comes out of it. No effort equals no results. Let’s get rid of this option immediately. Personal Training - Personal training definitely has merit. You can get a lot out of a program designed just for you and the personal attention of one-on-one. But you will miss out on seeing other people learn the skills you are learning, which can help keep you motivated and actually

The energy of a small group of people immeasurably increases your likelihood of sticking with a program, and small group training is much less expensive with the personalized benefits of personal training. increase the learning curve. You see other people struggle and you become not so alone in yours. Their victories become yours and yours become theirs. The energy of a small group of people immeasurably increases your likelihood of sticking with a program, and small group training is much less expensive with the personalized benefits of personal training. Join a Globo-Gym - This is when you only have to pay a small monthly payment to brave the gym world alone and unafraid. The only time this really works out well is when you have been coached in the past, you know what your goals are and how to get to them, and the gym has the equipment you need to accomplish your mission. If that’s the case my main advice is to video your sets and evaluate before your next one. It can be an incredibly productive way to coach yourself, and you can always post your videos on forums and ask for collective feedback. Otherwise let’s be honest, if you are on a “fitness” machine that is attached to or pointed towards a television, you aren’t going to accomplish anything except exhaustion. True fitness requires you to be present, not being caught up on Maury or ESPN highlights. As far as weight machines go, they too have value but mainly in a rehab setting. Take an Exercise Class - These are choreographed classes set to music that are formatted for everyone to do the same movements as the instructor. It is the instructor’s job to show you what to do and motivate you, but not to coach you in the movements. They can be a fun way to increase your activity, and when you take enough classes a lot of times you can teach some and
get a free membership. The main problems I see with these is that everyone has different needs that aren’t addressed by choreography and that you don’t need any physical education to teach them. The new boot camp trend has group instructors practicing way outside their scope. These instructors aren’t intentionally being negligent but don’t realize how much they don’t know. If you love taking classes that’s great, but remember not to work through pain. If something you are doing in class causes you pain, it’s not okay and it may be time to look for more thorough instruction. Weigh your options and don’t be afraid to try several different classes, groups and styles of training. Try getting someone to embark on this journey with you. Training is always more enjoyable when you aren’t in it alone. Make sure wherever you are you feel good there. There is nothing better than finding your gym family. You don’t have to know anyone at the gym/studio you pick, but you want to be around people who inspire you, care about you and you enjoy being around. One hour of exercise is about four percent of your day. You might as well benefit from every second of it.

REDISCOVER YOUR SMILE ARE CHRONIC HEADACHES AFFECTING YOUR “LOOK”? BY RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS DENTISTRY IS ALL ABOUT creating beautiful smiles, and that artistry doesn’t end with teeth whitening and veneers. Your oral health and your overall health have a big impact on your appearance. Chronic headaches can affect your “look” without you realizing it. Some questions to think about: • Do your headaches make you feel tired or irritable? • Are they affecting the quality of your family life? • Do your headaches cause you to have difficulty focusing at work? There may be a dental component to your headaches. Headaches are usually classified as: Tension headaches – The most common type with feelings of pain and pressure, muscle aches, sleeplessness, and inability to concentrate. Migraines – An estimated 18 to 28 million Americans, mostly women, suffer from migraines. They are characterized by throbbing pain, visual problems, facial numbness, sensitivity to light and sound, and queasiness. Cluster headaches – The least common type, usually suffered by men. Cluster headaches begin as severe pain in one eye, resulting in swelling and watering of the eye. Dental problems are a frequent cause of headaches. Malocclusion – when the upper and lower teeth don’t fit together properly as the mouth closes – causes tension in jaw, facial, neck and shoulder muscles resulting in tension headaches. A history of trauma (falls, car accidents or sports injuries) can also cause bite related Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ) issues.

You may find relief from a comfortable mouth guard worn at night to minimize grinding, or an oral appliance to keep the airway open and alleviate sleep apnea.

Bite correction with modern orthodontia or restorative dental procedures can eliminate headache triggers. Some dentists have a computerized bite analysis that takes the sum of four quick bites and can show where you bite first and how much pressure you put on your teeth. Your back molars should have 10 to 15 percent of your overall bite force. The smaller premolars average 6 to 9 percent of the bite force; your front teeth, 1 to 4 percent. In addition to your bite analysis, your range of motion and a TMJ/ head and neck exam can reveal if some or all of your headache issues are caused by your dental condition. Consider a dental solution rather than overthe-counter and prescription medications that only treat symptoms and slow you down. If your bite isn’t in balance, you can get massage therapy, chiropractic treatment or physical therapy, but the pain typically returns. You don’t have to suffer from headaches or take a handful of pills to get through the day. Make an appointment with a dentist to find relief from chronic headache pain – and rediscover that beautiful smile!

MENTAL ATTITUDE: CAN COMPUTER use help with seniors’ memory? A new study (American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting, April 2016) suggests that seniors who use computers as little as once per week may help ward off commonly observed agerelated declines in memory and thinking. According to the study, researchers found that seniors who used a computer during the previous week had a 42 percent lower risk of developing mild cognitive impairment, a condition that places an individual at greater risk for more severe forms of dementia. While it isn’t clear to investigators how computer use may help protect one’s memory, the researchers believe that being engaged, challenged, active and mentally stimulated can lead to a healthier brain. Health Alert: Lawn Mowers Pose Dangers to Kids. Reports presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Meeting last March stressed that children in the United States continue to suffer severe injuries from both regular power lawn mowers and ride-on mowers. Currently, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that no child under the age of 16 operate a ride-on mower and no child under twelve operate a push mower. Additionally, they urge parents to keep all children younger than the age of six indoors when any mower is in operation and not to allow kids to ride as passengers on mowers operated by adults. A recent study found that over 50 percent of kid-related mower accidents resulted in an amputation. Senior study author Dr. Douglas Armstrong explains, “People don’t realize how dangerous lawn mowers are... The vast majority of the injuries could have been prevented if safety guidelines had been followed.” Exercise: Brain Chemicals Affected By Exercise. Researchers have found that people who exercise not only have better physical fitness than inactive persons, but they also have better mental fitness. Using magnetic

resonance imaging (MRI) scans, researchers found that intense exercise increased the levels of two common neurotransmitters called glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid in study participants. The finding offers insights into brain metabolism and how exercise could become an essential part of treating depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders associated with deficiencies in neurotransmitters. Lead researcher Dr. Richard Maddock adds in the Journal of Neuroscience, February 2016, “We are offering another view on why regular physical activity may be important to prevent or treat depression... Not every depressed person who exercises will improve, but many will. It’s possible that we can help identify the patients who would most benefit from an exercise prescription.” Wellness/Prevention: Probiotics May Prevent Dental Cavities. In the future, preventing cavities may be as simple as taking a supplement to keep unwanted bacteria in check. Researchers have found a strain of bacteria that could keep bad bacteria under control and pave the way to using probiotics (beneficial bacteria) to prevent cavities. The newly identified bacteria is a strain of Streptococcus called A12, which was found to help neutralize acids in the mouth and also kill Streptococcus mutans, an especially harmful kind of bacteria. The findings are important because too much acid can cause dental cavities or other disorders. While the development of an effective oral probiotic is still a long way off, this previously unknown bacteria looks like a promising candidate in the future of dental health. The results were reported in the Applied and Environmental Microbiology, January 2016. This information should not be substituted for medical advice. HOPE FOR THE HOPELESS HOW THE AMEN CLINIC BROUGHT HEALING TO TWO LOCAL FAMILIES BY JON JOHANSEN
I TH F N ’ TW E RAELATKHI Y I PO R K S
“Dear God, if I am not gonna get any better, just let me die.” MY OLD FRIEND “Zachary’s” audible prayer shocked my eyes open. I stared, wondering, “What can I possibly say to give him hope?” He continued, “And if You do take me to Heaven, please take care of my sweet family. Keep ‘em safe and provide for ‘em.” The sorrow of the big guy’s words echoed in
brain; had a clinician glean information from the daughter and mom; measured the young lady’s overall health; and gathered all of the above data, with the help of a psychiatrist. They suggested a new medicine that seems to be maximizing the high school girl’s intellectual and emotional health. He swears she’s never been better.” I relayed all of this to Zachary before working up the courage to add, “I know it’s expensive, but I think you’ve got to consider it. Nothing else has worked for you.” Three weeks later, I ran into Big Zack at a coffee shop. His formerly set jaw opened up in a shy smile while he clapped me on the arm.
my ears. After more than a decade of battling trauma, he was physically and emotionally tapped out. After saying, “Amen,” he looked up at me, ashamed. He blew his nose and, with angry embarrassment, rubbed tears away using the backs of balled fists. “So this is what it’s come to,” he croaked, “asking God to kill me.” Then things got real. “Hey,” he queried, “what am I gonna do? My counselor was recently kicked out of his job. My ol’ buddy – the only one who knows what this is like – is gone for good. There’s no hope.” Thankfully, my mind flitted to another burly acquaintance, “Ray Smith,” who recently told me of a group up north. “Zack,” I tentatively offered, “according to my buddy, his brain-injured high schooler – failing on a number of fronts despite years of family medical interventions – received fantastic support from Dr. Amen’s people. His clinic recently took two scans of the girl’s
“JJ,” he gushed, his teeth showing from beneath his bushy beard, “I gotta tell ya, it worked.” “What worked?” I asked. “The freaking ‘Ay-Men’ clinic worked!” Turns out that they’d taken him through their entire protocol. “My scans showed damage here and here,” he whispered, pointing to the front and left sides of his head. “And when my brain won’t shut off when I try to sleep, it’s ‘cause the middle of it lights up all the time. I’ve gotta go, man,” he continued, stepping away, “gonna go take my wife on a date. But ya know what else? Last weekend, instead of hiding in my room, I played ball with my kids!” Through the window I watched him greet his bride with a bear hug. She looked up at him with tender admiration. He was once again her hero. I can’t pretend to fully understand what the clinic did for these fellas. I just know it worked.

“I
have cancer.” These are three words that pack a punch and leave you breathless and dizzy. And those three words changed my life back in 2002.
day in November in 2004, we took off a day from work and headed into the city to do our annual Christmas shopping. Driving down the interstate, she voiced her concerns about a lump she had felt just that morning in her breast and asked if I wouldn’t mind if we stopped by the hospital on our way to shop so she could get it checked. Don’t ask me how she got an appointment, or if we used the emergency room as these details were not remembered. Of course, I would drive there. After her test, we went on our way to shop and a few weeks later, those darn words reappeared again, “I have cancer.” Who really knows what had happened, but doctors thought that one cell had remained, and because she had not received radiation, it had begun growing, and it was even more aggressive than before.
I don’t remember much about the scene when my mother, then only 57 years old, spoke these words, other than she had all our family, my dad, my two sisters, my husband and I all together when out of her mouth came, “I have breast cancer.” From that moment on, life was a bit of a blur, and me being the type of person I am, I immediately went to the American Cancer Society and ordered a packet of information on breast cancer. What was this disease that I knew people had and from which both lived and died? I began to research, finding an organization called Susan G. Komen that began in 1982 provided information and funding. It had begun as people were just beginning to hear more about this type of cancer. Needless to say, after surgeries and chemotherapy, which took about six months, my mother was given a clean bill of health. She was to get mammograms every six months until she reached the five-year survival benchmark. And for the next six months, she lived with this thought in the back of her mind.
My sisters and I decided we wanted to do something tangible to eliminate this disease. Jenny and I both loved to walk, and I had seen an ad for the Avon Walk, a 39.3 mile walk in Los Angeles where Jenny resided. It required a marathon the first day and 13 miles the second. The Avon Foundation supported research and early detection with an emphasis on low income men and women. So, with a passion to kick this disease in the butt, we started our training and fundraising in earnest. Boy, did I have a lot to learn! I had no idea what mole skin or pronation was prior to setting out on this course; however, mole skin and the right tennis shoes became my best friends over the course of the next nine months. A key element in being successful at walking a marathon or more is training. Your feet
My mother and I were close and in my adult life we became best friends. There was not a day that went by that my mother and I didn’t at least speak over the phone. Since we lived a mile away from each other, many of those conversations were face-to-face. One

FAITH must be in shape to handle the amount of steps, much more so than any other part of your body, and your mind must be focused on the end goal. As we watched our mother fight this disease, her unwavering focus to live was paramount and inspired us to keep going when we wanted to stop. Between, Jenny, my other sister, Amanda, and I, we raised more than $20,000, which was really a testament to the many people and businesses our mother had touched. Jenny and I began the walk on September 11, 2004 with a playlist from Amanda. As we walked the boardwalk on the beach, we thought, “Wow this isn’t so bad.” With rest stops every mile to mile-and-a-half, funny decorated vans following us playing music and hundreds of other walkers in the warm California sun, we thought, “This will be a breeze!” Actually, it wasn’t bad until about mile 21 when we heard a snap and Jenny experienced what we later learned was a hairline fracture in her foot. But she never gave up, and those last six miles as she limped along were pretty slow. The following day, Jenny cheered for me and I took the last 13 miles on my own. I think this is a bit like what my mom experienced. Her end goal was to live. But this changed as she realized it probably wouldn’t be a long term goal to one that she wanted to have one more Christmas together as an entire family. She never gave up; however, she had to adjust her goals as she fought the fight. There were times when my mother limped along as the cancer spread to her brain, her lungs, eventually to her kidneys and liver, requiring radiation and chemo that physically, mentally and emotionally drained her. She never quit cheering for others as she continued to run her small business, a True Value Hardware store, and gave back to the community. For Christmas of 2004, we decided to spend the night at our parents’ home with our families so that we could relive those early morning Santa arrivals. Two weeks before Christmas, my mother developed a cold, and with anyone who is experiencing cancer, this is not good. Doctors pumped her with antibiotics, and she improved. The weekend before Christmas, we headed to our annual extended family celebrations. On Saturday, my mother woke up feeling terrible, coughing, running a fever and just looked awful. We made the decision to skip the get-together on Sunday and drove her immediately to the hospital in Kansas City. The next two weeks were some of the worst but also some of the best weeks of my life too because they were filled with late night family conversations, shared memories and emotions. My mother spent almost two weeks in the intensive care unit (ICU) and made a miraculous full recovery from pneumonia. But after two days in a room, she slipped into a coma. On January 1, 2005, at

about 9am, surrounded by her family, she passed away. This moment is etched in my mind forever as I could physically feel the sacredness and the presence of God as she went from this world. Why this story about my mother and cancer? Why have you walked so many miles for breast cancer? These are questions I hear frequently. This story is the reason behind the miles! After the first walk with my sister, I crossed it off my bucket list and didn’t think about it again. Our family had walked in the Komen 5K walks since 1998, and when I heard that Avon Walk 3-Day, 60-mile walk was coming to Kansas City, I called my sister and asked if she wanted to do it again. She laughed and said, “No way!” Who did I turn to next but my loving husband? Oh, the things we will do for love! This walk was much like the other and in 2006 we started out on the three-day journey. With thousands of walkers, we celebrated, shared mole skin and laughed ourselves through the 20 miles a day. These organizations do a wonderful job with semi-trucks converted into hot showers, massage booths and our nightly tents in

which to camp. The first night of this walk, Kansas City weather kicked in, forcing us to be bused to a nearby warehouse where we slept on the floor as the gusty winds and pounding rain fell. As we approached the finish line this time, at mile 60, we felt and heard rumblings, looking up into the sky we realized the Blue Angel tour was occurring at the same time! Now that’s a fly by!
As we watched our mother fight this disease, her unwavering focus to live was paramount and inspired us to keep going when we wanted to stop.
Fast forward about a decade and a move to Sandpoint when I decided I needed a fitness goal. Something prompted me, and I signed up for the 3-Day, 60-mile walk but was trying to decide between Seattle and San Diego. Let’s see…deal with rain
BREAST CANCER FACTS: According to www.breastcancer.org, statistics involving breast cancer include the following: • About 12 perecent of women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. • In 2016, an estimated 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 61,000 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
or have sun with tennis shoes and hope for no blisters. That’s a no brainer. San Diego won out. Again, my sister opted out and my husband did so as well. So, I asked, Barb Perusse, who loves to walk. She agreed to train with me only, but as time went on, I wore her down. In the fall of 2015, we headed to San Diego, both of us walking for our mothers who had died of cancer.
• About 2,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2016. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about one in 1,000. • Breast cancer incidence rates in the U.S. began decreasing in the year 2000, after increasing for the previous two decades. They dropped by 7 percent from 2002 to 2003 alone. One theory is that this decrease was partially due to the reduced use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by women after the results of a large study called the Women’s Health Initiative were published in 2002. These results suggested a connection between HRT and increased breast cancer risk.
This walk was much harder, and there were many times I wanted to give up as the heat, dust and pain of blisters descended. On day three, I cried while I walked, and I prayed for strength and inspiration. In the midst of all this, a picture of my mother as
• For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer. • About 85 percent of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations.

LOVE she sat in her chemo chair with this strange port in her chest and a smile on her face came to my mind. She had the option to give up and chose not to. She fought, and I was complaining about a few blisters and being hot and tired. Wow! This time the finish line was glorious. Although the recovery time was longer, I would not trade any of those miles and shared experiences. I have trained and walked more than 240 miles in official walks simply for the love of my mother and the sincere desire for no one to ever experience cancer! All three of
my walking partners have similar reasons. Regardless of whether you agree with the organizations, the awareness, education and early detection has decreased breast cancer diagnoses by 37 percent in the last 10 years. That’s a win to me and signs that we need to continue down this path. The thought crosses my mind occasionally that my mother might have been alive today had those advancements been available to her. But the hope and reality of survival is higher for others because of these advancements. It’s another reason that I do the walks.

Will I do another walk? I’m not counting it completely off although I’ve crossed it off my bucket list now three times! I may likely do so as my Aunt Ruth, my mother’s sister, was just diagnosed in March of this year. It’s my small way to help eradicate breast cancer! If you are interested in walking, a local, shorter walk is in Spokane. Just be careful if you see me, because I might call you to walk with me in the future!

Because of their individual tastes for wine – Claude, from France, prefers dry wines while Claudia likes the fruitier ones – they make both. Wine & Weddings The perfect pairing By Megan Olson
T
he Pacific Northwest is invariably known for its majestic mountainous terrain and coastal beauty. The Cascade Mountains extend along the Pacific shore from British Columbia to California creating unsurpassable landscapes. This extraordinary area has emerged as a prominent region that is home to over 1,000 world-class wineries. Of those, some offer not only prestigiously crafted wines to tantalize the palate, but an authentic experience to appease the soul. The Pacific Ocean and the coastal mountains certainly set the stage for a vision of exquisite beauty. It’s the perfect union between the maritime effect and this mountainous region that generates the essential mild climate conducive for growing quality grapes. Latitude 45 extends through the temperate regions of Oregon as well as the Burgundy area of France. It’s logical that Pinot Noir and Chardonnay would be the heart of Pacific Northwest grape cultivation. Washington follows behind California as the second largest producer of wine in North America. The focus is to create quality flavors over quantity. Not only is the Pacific Northwest home to award winning and globally renowned wines, the vineyards also offer an authentic

tasting experience. Aficionados and novice tasters alike can enjoy a hot air balloon tour with Pacific Peaks Balloons from April through October. The balloon ride travels over the heart of Oregon wine country in the Willamette Valley. Guests are able to obtain a unique bird’s eye perspective and then a tour of the eco-friendly Stoller Vineyards. The award winning estate manages every aspect of their wine production from cultivation to bottling. The Stoller Winery was the first in the world to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for sustainable and eco-friendly cultivation and processing. Oregon’s Willamette Valley wine region certainly varies from the climate of Central Washington. Maritime breezes tend to slow the ripening of grapes to create favorable conditions for complex flavors and aromatics. Oregon’s wineries tend to be smaller in size and are more decentralized than those of California and Washington. Evening Land Vineyard is the archetype example of a premier Oregon winery. The vineyard’s pinot noir was ranked No. 3 on Wine Spectator’s 2015’s top 100 best wines in the world. Evening Land certainly has put Oregon on the map as a formidable contender in the wine industry.

The Columbia River is the largest river in the Pacific Northwest and flows partially through the fruitful Columbia Valley that is comprised of approximately 11 million acres. The Columbia Valley is perhaps the most recognizable wine region in the U.S. after Napa Valley. This region extends in a triangular shape between the Oregon border, Washington, and Idaho. It has been coined as “The Mothership” of Washington viticulture as it makes up about one-third of Washington state.
tours and horseback winery rides. The cowboy limo is an open-air hayride tour of the vineyard with tasting stops. The horseback riding tour includes basic riding techniques as well as a tour and taste of the vineyard. As the season approaches, scenic wineries and weddings pair quite nicely. Novelty Hill Januik Winery in Woodinville, Washington takes the cake when it comes to providing an authentic and breath-taking wedding venue. Woodinville is nestled 13 miles to the north of Seattle, and this winery is renowned for its award winning Cabernet Sauvignon. The bridal party can reserve the entire venue which accommodates up to 120 guests. The culinary team prepares and serves a tantalizing meal infused by the estate’s wine. By evening, the fireplaces are lit to create an illuminated ambiance to complete a perfect and romantic day.
This valley is relatively arid and receives an average of six to eight inches of rainfall per year. Grapes for Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay do exceedingly well in this irrigated and relatively controllable climate to produce an abundance of quality wines. If the heights of a hot air balloon ride aren’t alluring and have wine connoisseurs looking sideways, a sophisticated vineyard bed and breakfast in the heart of wine country is the way to go. The Girasol Inn in Walla Walla, Washington has been esteemed as being one of the best B&B vineyard experiences in the world. Walla Walla is situated near the Oregon border and is about 240 miles east of Portland. The arid climate for this area allows for a variety of grapes to flourish. The owners planted Syrah, Sangiovese and Viognier in 2006, and the Inn was completed in 2007. The awe-inspiring backdrop and wine flavors have visitors making comparisons to Tuscany. Walla Walla is home to nearly 140 wineries and is included in the Columbia Valley region. The Cherry Wood Bed and Breakfast (and Barn) in the Yakima Valley is another distinct wine tasting opportunity. The B&B has a country theme that includes “cowboy limo”

The Pacific Northwest has emerged as a serious contender for the production of quality wine. The numbers of wineries in Washington have increased by 400 percent in the last 10 years. This agricultural shift draws in over two million visitors to the wine country each year, which is a multi-million dollar tourism profit. The ideal climate and longer hours of daylight foster an optimal growing season for grapes. The Pacific Northwest not only offers a multitude of rich flavors and award-winning wines, it also offers genuine winery experiences from exciting hot air balloon rides, unique B&Bs, and romantic wedding venues. It is safe to say that there is something for every palate.

Wedding Cakes This is one area that allows the couple to be as creative as they want! No longer are couples opting for the traditional wedding cake; instead, they are implementing unique creations that include metallic, painted, ruffled and “naked” cakes. Metallic cakes with an art-deco look are especially popular, including geometric shapes that give it a modern feel. Ruffled cakes offer a more elegant look. Naked cakes, which do not have frosting on the sides, expose the cake and filling. And whether it is subtle decorations or solid colored layers, painted wedding cakes are a popular trend for many couples. Be creative and have fun! It’s your special day! Photo by LiLi Wedding Photography.
Lighting... Both functional and decorative, lighting can literally transform your venue for either your wedding or reception into a magical place providing a romantic feel to your already special day. If you are in an outdoor and open area, it can feel large and vast. Lighting can be used to not only define your specific space but can also make it feel more intimate. Luminaries are a great and inexpensive way to help light up an outdoor path. Do you have an outdoor tent? String lighting from above to provide an elegant atmosphere. Greenery If you want to be a little less traditional in not only your wedding décor, but also your floral arrangements, try “going green.” Using greenery is a great way to tie all of your decorations together – from tabletop centerpieces to a trellis to arrangements placed at the altar and even as cake decorations. You can either combine the leaves of things such as mint, rosemary and ferns with larger and bolder plant leaves or intersperse them with floral arrangements. Any way you utilize the greenery, it is bound to bring a beautiful and lush look to the venue at an affordable price! Photo (right) by LiLi Wedding Photography.
Wine Barrels Whether it is as a planter or a stand for your wedding cake, using wine barrels in both a functional and decorative way is a wonderful way to add a rustic yet elegant look to your venue. Many utilize a single barrel as a base for a table for those who are mingling, drinking cocktails and enjoying appetizers. Cut one in half, and you have a perfect side table. Others have even used a wine barrel for a guest book, allowing their guests to write their names on it providing the couple with a keepsake they can cherish forever. The possibilities are endless! PLENTY OF GREAT TASTES
N
APA AND SONOMA VALLEYS ARE USUALLY TOP of mind when it comes to touring wine country, and why not? For decades, these California valleys have been the quintessential landmark for the American vintner and wine enthusiasts. Today, the region produces some of the more recognizable American wine labels and there are 525 vintners operating in the Napa Valley alone. It’s an immensely popular travel destination, but you don’t have to road trip it all the way to California to find some of the best wines in the country. Washington is catching up to California in the race for the title of Wine Country USA. The growing conditions across the central part of the state mimic that of some of the oldest vineyards in Europe and as the growth and expansion of the wine industry has accelerated, former dusty farm towns have become blossoming tourist destinations. All across the state, you’ll find a wide range of tasting rooms and varietals plus plenty of fun weekend destinations. According to the Washington Wine Commission, in 1996 there were 80 wineries producing about 35,000 tons per year. Flash forward twenty years to today, and there are nearly 900 wineries putting out 222,000 tons - it’s an incredible growth for such a short period. The amount of acreage for growing wine grapes has nearly tripled in that time, and there are currently 13 regions recognized by the federal government as American Viticultural Areas. Washington is second only to California in premium wine production with approximately 16-million cases going out this year. The total economic impact of the wine industry is more than $5 billion annually. While the bulk of the grapes are grown in the central and eastern parts of the state, there are wineries throughout, making a wine tasting weekend easy no matter where you’re starting from. The Puget Sound Region While only about 200 acres of grapes are grown here, many are surprised to learn that there are nearly 45 wineries from the Canadian border to south of Olympia. Although smaller in size, you will often find unique wines rarely seen elsewhere in the state because of the wetter growing conditions found here. Pinot Noir and Riesling are the most commonly produced, but you can also find Madeleine Angevine, Muller Thurgau, Regent, Siegerrebe, which are most likely grapes you’ve never tasted before. Seattle Wine Tours offers guides and rides around the downtown area tasting rooms, and just 30 miles away in Woodinville, you will find more than 100 wineries including the famous Chateau Ste. Michelle as well as small artisan vintners. Leavenworth This Bavarian town nestled in the mountains northwest of Wenatchee is a popular weekend getaway for visitors from both sides of the state. from all over for the famous Oktoberfest, summer adventure, winter Christmas celebrations and of course wine tasting. One great benefit to wine tasting in Leavenworth is that the majority of the tasting rooms are all within walking distance of each other, eliminating the need for transportation. Those who do want to venture off to wineries outside of town can hire limos or buses, depending on group size. With so much else to do here, Leavenworth makes for a great trip with family or friends with time to fit in a few tastings here and there. If you find that most of the hotels, condos and vacation rentals are booked out, you can still find plenty of great tasting rooms in nearby Wenatchee. Shuttles run daily between the two towns allowing you easy access to both destinations. The Columbia Valley Encompassing almost a third of the state’s land this is where the overwhelming majority of grapes are grown, 11-million acres to be exact. About 30 different varieties of grapes are planted in the region. The most popular wines to come from this area are Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling and Syrah. While the Cascade Mountains see a generous amount of rain each year, they stop many weather systems from reaching the central part of the state. In fact, much of the Columbia Valley receives just 6 to 8 inches of rain per year and more than 300 days of sunshine, allowing for a growing season of up to 200 days. Winemakers from as far away as Italy and Australia have moved to the area for its renowned growing conditions. Located within the Valley are Ellensburg, Yakima, the Tri-Cities, and further north, Coulee City and Grand Coulee. Walla Walla Valley The far eastern corner of the state is truly becoming a world famous region as evidenced by the more than 200 wineries operating in and around Walla Walla. There is an incredible variety of experiences to be had here from tasting rooms playing rock music to Cayuse Cellars which only opens its downtown tasting room one day a year to exclusive club members. What is truly unique about Walla Walla is how close you are to so many wineries. Those wanting to stay downtown can find enough places to try for a long weekend or more. Just ten minutes from

town are dozens of more tasting rooms, and there are several shuttle services for hire that can plan a custom experience based on your tastes. Spring and fall barrel release weekends bring in an influx of visitors so be prepared to make reservations on these popular weekends and book your stay well in advance. A short drive up the road to Dayton, you will find a less crowded version of Walla Walla and some very impressive wines as well. Spokane With the popularity of courses in winemaking offered at Washington State University, many Coug grads are staying close to home and opening new wineries in and around Spokane. The Cork District offers visitors a map to area wineries as more pop up each year. Arbor Crest is situated above town with great views of the area, and a trip north of town to Green Bluff you will encounter several more wineries as well as a conglomerate of farms featuring different pick-your-own fruits, crafts and fun activities for the kids. Wine tasting can often get a bad rap as something pretentious and intimidating if you don’t know much about it. While there are rooms that cater to this crowd across the state, generally you will find fun, knowledgeable vintners ready to help answer your questions. You don’t have to like everything and if something isn’t your favorite or you want to try a few extras without the effects of consuming mass quantities, don’t be afraid to pour your remaining taste out. Generally speaking, tastings run $5 to $15 and that fee is refunded if you purchase a bottle on-site. With nearly 900 options across the state you’re sure to find something that fits your palate. It’s truly impressive to see such immense growth in the industry in just the past 20 years and even better that some of the best wine not just in the country but around the globe, can be found right in your own backyard. Whether you’re a connoisseur or just starting to move from a wine box to a bottle, you’ll find fun, knowledge and perhaps a new favorite no matter where you decide to go.

GIG HARBOR BEER FESTIVAL Taste the spring! By Colin Anderson
SPRINGTIME IS ALL ABOUT getting out and about, enjoying the warmer weather and longer nights. It’s a time of refreshment, and that’s what you’ll find plenty of at the 5th Annual Gig Harbor Beer Festival. The Gig Harbor Beer Festival runs from noon to 5pm on Saturday May 14 at the Uptown Gig Harbor Pavilion. Your $30 ticket into the event gets you a five-ounce pilsner style tasting glass that you get to keep, eight tokens to sample a wide range of brews, and a program with descriptions of the participating breweries. Tickets can be purchased online and a link is set up at the event website www.gigharborbeerfestival.com. You can also purchase your tickets on festival day, but it will more than likely sell out so advance ticket purchase is highly recommended. This is a 21 and over event and all entrants will need to show a valid ID to get in. As the event continues to grow each year, so does the space. There will be 26 breweries represented and more than 50 different Northwest beers to sample. This year’s festival will also feature live music and an expanded festival area along the one-way street, which will be closed off for additional space. Food is not available for purchase inside the event however neighboring restaurants offer plenty of choices for lunch or an afternoon snack in between tastes. Guests are allowed to bring their own food with them to the festival. Proceeds from the Gig Harbor Beer Festival directly benefit the local Kiwanis club and all the great community programs they help to sponsor. Remember this is a cash only event so be sure to hit the ATM beforehand and bring a little extra if you plan on purchasing additional sample tokens. If you would like to volunteer, purchase tickets in advance, or learn more about the participating brewers, head to www.gigharborbeerfestival.com or follow them on facebook. You can also email questions to contact@gigharborbeerfestival.com. You’ll be sure to get an education in beer and have a blast at this community favorite festival.
