PUBLISHER’S note CELEBRATING MOTHERS! THEY ARE OUR NURTURERS, OUR CHEERLEADERS and in all probability the ones who love us most and truly unconditionally. Over the years, the role of mothers has changed, but one constant has remained—they are the ones who would do anything for us. Have you ever seen a quiet, reserved mother when someone messes with her child? They can become a different person in an instant. This month as we celebrate Mother’s Day, reflect on what your mother has meant to you. Did she influence the way you parent? Did she provide a role model for what you want the mother of your child or children to be?

It is true that Ozzie and Harriet no longer portray the typical American family; today, we have two-parent families where both are working, significantly more single-parent families and more kids enrolled in extracurricular activities, which requires a great deal of time getting kids from place to place. Yes, it can be exhausting. But I bet if you ask any mom, she will likely say she wouldn’t trade it for anything.

been harsh words that have separated you or geographical distance that makes it difficult to see one another, Mother’s Day is a perfect time to reach out and express your gratitude for all she has done. Also, think about those in your life who have been like a mother to you. Whether it’s a grandmother, aunt or family friend, those women who have shaped us into who we are should all be celebrated and acknowledged. Maybe they don’t even know the difference they have made in your life. Pick up the phone, give them a call and tell them, “Thank you.” It is the greatest Mother’s Day gift of all. A happy Mother’s Day to all the moms for the selfless giving you do each and every day!

R&R in the Great Outdoors

THREE WAYS TO TRANSFORM YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE

(BPT) - AS AMERICANS INCREASINGLY APPRECIATE the therapeutic benefits of nature, they're putting more thought and effort into creating beautiful, comfortable and functional living areas outside their own homes.

the center of a forest ... it feels escapist, it feels luxurious and it looks amazing. If you brought lots of plastic or man-made materials into this environment, it would just be wrong."

These days, such outdoor havens are considered valuable home extensions rather than underutilized corners of your yard. More than 70 percent of U.S. households now incorporate outdoor living spaces, reports one survey, and nearly 70 percent use those areas at least weekly in season.

The unique characteristics of the sought-after cedar allow it to weather into a gorgeous silver patina even as it resists rot, decay and insects. Further, the durable wood is a dream to work with because it's lightweight, lays flat, stays straight and is free of pitch and resin. Bonus: The forests harvested for the wood are carefully and sustainably replanted.

A favorite material for such havens is Western Red Cedar, a stunning and fragrant wood species that incorporates beautifully into decks, porches, furniture and other functional elements of your home.

Dreaming of a private, well-appointed outdoor space where your family and guests can relax while enjoying nature? Consider how these other suggestions might also help put those wheels in motion.

Not surprisingly, Western Red Cedar has many fans in the construction world. Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan of HGTV's "Colin and Justin's Home Heist" recently broadcast an online episode featuring the building of a lakeside cabin pergola that features the finely grained wood. "It smells incredible," notes Ryan. "Honestly, you are transported to

Cover your bases: Make your space easier to use through the seasons by adding a gazebo, pergola, pavilion or threeseason porch that can protect you, your guests and your furnishings from sun or rain. Consider draping curtains or netting that can be pulled back at will, allowing greater privacy and/or protection from bugs. Ideally, your new oasis

will merge the best of both worlds, bringing the comforts of home outside while still offering the benefits of fresh air, fragrant breezes, sunshine, birdsong and positive interactions with flora and fauna. Eat, drink and be merry: The old adage about guests gravitating toward the room that has the food? It's absolutely true, and incorporating cooking into your outdoor haven can lend a fun and informal entertaining element that just can't be replicated indoors. Options for equipment include grills, smokers, pizza ovens, fireplaces, bars or full kitchen setups with ovens, sinks, refrigerators and prep areas. Make sure to choose weather-resistant finishes for everything, install effective lighting and make sure you have plenty of comfortable seating for foodie friends. McCallister notes on his show how rewarding it can feel to transform unused outdoor areas into

havens of fun and relaxation, "transforming dead space into valuable life space." That same feeling can be achieved by do-it-yourselfers who embark on their own outdoor projects. "Outdoor patio spaces have sure changed in the last few years with the onset of new outdoor materials, furnishings, fixtures ... and the homeowner's desire for more outdoor living and entertaining space," notes Audra Slinkey in a recent report by the National Association of Realtors. "Today's yards are multi-functional and serve to entertain, lounge and maximize lot square footage." It's beautiful, it's practical and it's easy to use. Western Red Cedar can be an ideal building material for your next home improvement project. For more information about the building material and its guest appearance on "Colin and Justin's Home Heist," check out RealCedar.com.

LOOKING TO HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER? TIPS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR EXPERIENCE BY ALINDA MORRIS, OWNER, ALINDA MORRIS INTERIOR DESIGN, LLC PHOTO BY JULIE MANNEL

H

iring a designer can help you avoid costly mistakes. They are a wealth of information and can provide much better options than box stores or your local furniture store. Designers can save you time by assisting you in making decisions quickly while keeping you within budget. Here are some tips to get the most out of your experience. Identify your needs. Interior decorators and designers are not the same. One is not better than the other, but it is helpful to identify which one will work best for you. Interior decorators can help clients decide on a style and assist with paint colors and window coverings. They can make magic using your existing pieces with a few new purchases and accessories. Interior designers typically have a degree/ credentials. The education usually includes studying color and fabric, drafting-computeraided design (CAD), space planning, furniture design, architecture and often an apprentice program or internship. They provide drawings: floorplans, elevations and 3D models. They can assist you with a large remodel or new construction and provide custom furnishings, wall coverings and artwork down to the last perfect detail.

3016 Harborview Drive Gig Harbor WA 253.579.8431 www.alindamorrisinteriordesign.com

@alindamorris

Be honest. Designers are almost like psychiatrists (and sometimes marriage counselors) because they get to know some pretty personal things about you: your personal needs, your likes and dislikes, how you live in your home, etc. If you have a budget, tell them. If you are not comfortable disclosing your budget, provide a range. Getting started - the consultation. Some designers charge for this service while others do not. If you are paying for a consultation, you can expect a working meeting. Most designers who offer a complimentary consultation won’t usually give out free design advice. This is a great time to get to know someone. If you choose to hire them, you will be spending a lot of time with them, so make sure you like them.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

28

Questions to ask. What types of projects do you typically work on? If you are remodeling a kitchen, you will want an expert. If you are looking to update your home for resale, you may want a stager. If you have an entire home to remodel, you will want a designer who can handle that size of a project with ease. Do you think my timeline and my budget are realistic? How do you charge for your services? When will my payments be due? Do you take a retainer or money upfront? How is purchasing handled? Procurement is a service. Purchasing through a designer is not the same as purchasing from a retail/online store. Trade-only sources involve additional costs. Items are sent to a receiver and inspected, then delivered again during the project installation. These services include handling all purchase orders, stock availability, claims and replacements for any damaged items and scheduling delivery. Some designers provide E-Design or room packages. Most full-service firms do not allow clients to purchase because there are too many variables that can go wrong. Clients who wish to purchase online to save money should be willing to schedule, receive and unpackaged all items, assemble any furniture that requires it, return items if they do not work and file claims if items are damaged or not performing well. Best advice: Do not begin any phase of work without a contract or letter of agreement.

WILL GIVING DECLINE? THE LOSS OF THE CHARITABLE TAX DEDUCTION COULD HURT NONPROFITS PROVIDED BY CHERI JOHNSON, FINANCIAL PLANNER, INVESTMENT ADVISOR, STRATEGIC WEALTH ADVISORS, GIG HARBOR

W

ill charities lose out on millions this year due the recent tax reforms?

The standard federal income tax deduction is now $12,000 to $24,000 for a married couple filing jointly, $13,600 for a single taxpayer 65+ and $26,600 for joint filers 65+. With these huge standard deductions, middle-class households now have far less incentive to itemize as there will be no tax advantage in making a charitable gift—unless that gift is large enough to send their total itemized deductions north of these respective thresholds. Certainly, households will still make charitable donations this year. The question is to what degree? Charities and nonprofits may strengthen their appeals to businesses for help. The 2018 tax reforms lowered the corporate tax rate to 21 percent and positioned mid-sized corporations to reap the biggest savings. Some of those savings could be poured back into communities. Charitable IRA gifts can still be made. Retirees who own traditional IRAs have the chance to make significant contributions to charities and nonprofits in a way that will help them fulfill their yearly Required Minimum Distributions. A Qualified Charitable Distribution may be a good move in this situation, and many charities are encouraging it. A QCD works like this: A traditional IRA owner earmarks up to $100,000 in assets from the IRA for a transfer to a qualified charity or nonprofit organization. In return, the IRS lets the donor count the amount of the gift toward their RMD for that year. The transfer of the assets is tax free, and the gifted amount is not added to the donor’s adjusted gross income.

be tax effective. A household can try bunching its charitable gifts every second, third, fourth or fifth year to amass enough itemized deductions to write off more than the standard deduction. That is, make many charitable gifts one year and perhaps none for one to four years after that. Even taxpayers who refrain from itemizing may be attracted to the potential of a donoradvised fund. This amounts to an individual’s personal charitable savings account, with the money or securities one day going to a qualified nonprofit. Taxpayers use DAFs as a vehicle to gift highly appreciated securities to charity—when they make that gift, they are able to deduct the full market value of those securities from their taxable income for the year and avoid the capital gain tax. ESSENTIALS

Clarity, Focus and Ease in a Complex World

Make your life easier

“Would it be OK with you – if life got easier?” - Maria Nemeth, PhD, Founder Academy for Coaching Excellence

B

uckminster Fuller, credited with naming the “Knowledge Doubling Curve,” noted that until 1900, human knowledge doubled about every century. By the mid-1900s, knowledge was doubling every 25 years. Today, knowledge doubles every 13 months, and the rate is accelerating. Increased knowledge impacts change and the rate of change. And all of that change influences how we experience stress. In the United States, 77 percent of adults report physical symptoms of stress on a regular basis. Forty-eight percent report that stress has a negative impact on their personal and professional life. Many of the success strategies that worked until the turn of the 21st century are lagging behind. Information is a click away on a hand-held device, so your competition has access to the same material you do. Working longer hours doesn’t guarantee financial success, and it never guaranteed fulfillment. These strategies play a role in success, just as relationships, technology, resources and systems do; nevertheless, our world is becoming more and more complex, and we need a new way of thinking about success. It’s increasingly important to find ways to simplify. Have you ever thought, “I’m making this way more complicated than it needs to be?” If so, you’re not alone. Steve Jobs said, “Making things complicated is easy. Making them simple is hard. Really hard. But it’s worth the work because, if you can make things simple, you can move mountains.”

Today’s high-performing entrepreneurs and business owners say “no” to a thousand things so they can say “yes” to the vital few. They identify and focus on three to five pillars, and they do these very well. Look beneath that focus, and you discover the person who’s taken the time to clarify what’s important to them. Let’s look at three distinct ways to sharpen clarity. First, what’s your vision? Begin with your strengths and passion and define the products or services you’ll deliver, the clients and partners you’d like to work with and the results and income you’ll generate. Use your imagination to define your vision so clearly that you can see, feel, taste, touch and hear what it’s like to have your vision now. Second, where are you now? Almost no one answers this question without bias. When facing a long list of action items on a hectic day, there’s very little breathing room for an accurate picture. Clarity requires conscious and consistent thought. Many of my clients work so hard “on” their business to deliver products, serve clients, find clients, hire employees, tend to financials, etc. that they report little time to work “in” their business. Yet, we need to take a step back to clearly see where we are. Third, what actions are best now? Which actions will make a difference not only today but tomorrow? You may find these questions helpful. • What three pillars can I focus on to keep my business moving forward?

.

• What one thing can I do that will make everything else easier or unnecessary? • What can I do to simplify and align my actions? • What can I get excited or enthusiastic about today?

“I believe that you can go BIG without burnout and that when you dare to go to the edge of the life you’ve known and step beyond it’s borders, what you discover is a way of being that delivers results beyond your wildest dreams.”

In 2018, leadership is more about clarity, focus and simplicity than uncovering some complex one-of-a-kind solution. By asking questions that sift and sort through the information, actions and people we meet every day, you’ll find patterns that deliver clarity. Clarity makes it easier to communicate your vision, attract people willing to support that vision, build connections and deliver action steps with impact.

LIFE & COMMUNITY

Maritime Gig

Festival

J

une 2 and 3 will be a time of celebration for the greater Gig Harbor community. Maritime Gig Festival 2018 is a time to come together as a community and celebrate the wonderful history and present-day community spirit of such a special town. The annual two-day festival provides community members a chance to interact with businesses and nonprofits, be entertained by local and regional artists and musicians, and take part in many fun annual traditions. The parade will meander down Harborview Drive beginning at 10am Saturday morning with up to 100 entrants participating. Get up a little early and enjoy the kickoff events which include the pancake breakfast put on by the Kiwanis Club, or get the heart rate up at the U.S. Bank Family Fun Run, a casual 5k run through downtown. A time-honored tradition that should not be

missed is the Blessing of the Fleet, which takes place Sunday afternoon at 1pm. The Saint Nicholas Catholic Church Knights of Columbus and parish priest proceed from the church to Skansie Park with the Our Lady of the Harbor icon, where a service is held to honor those lost at sea and to pray for a safe and bountiful catch. The priest then circles the fishing fleet, blessing each boat and crew with holy water. You can watch this powerful ceremony from the docks or by anchoring your boat, kayak or paddleboard around the fleet. Finish out the weekend with a stroll through the Wheels on the Water car show, featuring fully restored gems and cool custom rides. Food, music and all kinds of family fun make this one of Gig Harbor’s favorite yearly events. Catch up with friends, enjoy a parade and honor the area’s maritime history by attending the Maritime Gig Festival in 2018.

The Power of GIRLPromise Empowering females for generations to come BY ALISON HENSLEE PHOTOS BY JESSICA CEDARLAND GROUP PHOTO BY DAVID MONTESINO, TACOMA NEWS TRIBUNE

W

hen people take negatives and turn them into positives, people enjoy sharing those stories. When a negative like bullying is turned into a positive like The Girl Promise—a movement started by two Gig Harbor women that has led approximately 4,000 girls to pledge to honor other females—it’s a story you hope will be shouted from mountain tops!

old, the two of them decided it was time to make a difference.

Robin Saathoff and Diane Stefanowicz are close friends, moms and full-time employees (Robin teaches preschool, Diane is a dental hygienist) who have become the powerhouses behind this program they created to empower girls, teaching acceptance, respect and leadership.

That decision led them to Robin’s college friend, Dr. Mary Graham, a psychologist at the University of Seattle who helped create a curriculum for presentations they now give at area schools and other venues. The curriculum places importance on girls empowering themselves to stand strong and teaching methods to be aware and help stop bullying. “We typically try and not focus on the bullies being bad people in our presentations. We think they are amazing leaders but they are just misdirected with their leadership abilities,” Diane noted. “Think if they used all their power and leadership for goodness?”

The Girl Promise idea started from conversations they had after bullying impacted their lives, both on a personal level when they were coworkers and as Diane’s daughter dealt with it in high school. When Robin noticed some unhealthy patterns showing up in her classroom, with girls as young as 3 years

The Girl Promise states: “I promise to love and respect other females regardless of our differences.” They teach that in a world of impossible standards, it’s better to keep conversations open and encourage girls to focus on building each other up instead of feeling the need for competition.

After two years, they’ve seen progress as The Girl Promise has grown from an idea to a series of presentations and a clothing company they opened to help fund the curriculum and further promote their platform. “We want girls to pump each other up and be supportive rather than being competitive or inclusive,” Robin said. Both women hope that their message will spread worldwide as girls of all ages learn to find strength in themselves, serving as The Girl Promise ambassadors who accept differences while celebrating each other’s accomplishments. When asked what message they would share with any girl being bullied, Diane replied, “We would first of all remind her that her being bullied has absolutely nothing to do with her. We would educate her on the fact that bullies are just humans who are hurting inside and that they act out and say things because they want others to hurt as well. We would tell her to find compassion for those who are hurting and who are lost. We would tell her to hold her beautiful head up and be proud of who she is and to not react back. Be a girl who can look herself in the mirror and be proud of who she is through her actions and her words.” After two years, they’ve seen progress as The Girl Promise has grown from an idea to a series of presentations and a clothing company they opened to help fund the curriculum and

plan for their business.

Diane and Robin decided to start the clothing line for the girls to have a takeaway as a visual reminder of their promise that could send out a positive message and provide opportunities for conversation. While the shirts, tanks and hoodies are boldly printed with “GIRL” or their hashtag, #GIRLPROMISE, in sizes from toddlers’ 2T to adults’ 4X, men are also encouraged to wear a GIRL shirt to show their support in empowering females of all ages. The clothing is available from Diane and Robin directly or online at GIRLbyRodiwear.com.

For Robin and Diane, it confirmed that what they were doing was coming into fruition; getting this project off the ground has taken a big investment of time and personal funds, and they admit that sometimes they’d felt like giving up. But this incidence gave them the motivation to continue.

Future goals for The Girl Promise are to make the curriculum available for schools and programs around the country and expand the clothing line. Both women are considering that this could turn into full-time work for them. When asked what has been the most pivotal moment so far, both women had the same answer: the moment at a recent meeting with the University of Washington marketing team, when UW marketing professor Steve Sack chose Robin and Diane to receive help pro bono with creating a marketing and strategy

“We have always made it a priority to talk to anyone who will listen to us about our important message,” they said. “The meeting was a pivotal moment for us because it reminded us that all the hard work we have been putting in is finally paying off. These tiny seeds we plant by talking to people are so very important to building our business, but more importantly, they help to spread our important message that so needs to be heard. We will never give up.” Here’s hoping they never do, for every girl’s sake. “The thing I find most rewarding is the pure joy and excitement children at this age have in regards to coming to school and to then use that same joy and excitement in my teaching,” explained Rucci.

E

lementary-aged school children have a lot of energy to burn off, and it’s up to Dave Rucci to help them accomplish that. For 21 years, Rucci has helped kids from kindergarten through fifth grade experience the joys of physical activity, exploring new sports and games, and learning how to compete and work as a team. “The thing I find most rewarding is the pure joy and excitement children at this age have in regards to coming to school and to then use that same joy and excitement in my teaching,” explained Rucci. Energy is what kids bring every day to Harbor Heights Elementary School. While some students look most forward to P.E., others would rather spend more time in art, math or science. It’s Mr. Rucci’s job to encourage all kids to be active and find activities that are fun and keep children engaged. Sports are often about celebrating who wins. We give championship parades to our professional teams who come home with championships and often criticize coaches, players and management for teams that come up short. Rucci recalls a time when his students taught him a lesson about winning.

championship in basketball. I was very proud of them and their accomplishment. I had them stand on the picnic table at school and we sang ‘They are the champions.’” At the end of the day, a student who wasn’t on the winning basketball team asked why those students were honored like that. Mr. Rucci told the child it was “because they were winners,” and the child’s response was “but you always tell us that we are all winners.” “He was right. I had not taken the time to celebrate every student and their accomplishments. From that point on we had weekly celebrations, some of which had nothing to do with academics. To outsiders they may have seemed frivolous, but to many of those students being celebrated was the highlight of their week, and truth be told ... they stood a little taller,” said Rucci. It’s not always about winning and losing in Mr. Rucci’s classes, but the adversity and lessons learned by competing with and against others is something he hopes to instill in each of his students. “I tell them: Have integrity! Always try to do the right thing even when no one is looking! People do notice and people do care.”

ntegrative Therapeutic Solutions is a holistic neuro-physical private practice clinic in Gig Harbor. With a focus on personalized therapies, they specialize in neurologic dysfunctions and injuries that affect balance, neck to hand pain and function to postural instability, home and community safety, as well as caregiver resilience.

“I don’t promise to cure anyone, but I promise to work hard at finding out what is causing dysfunction and finding a way to ameliorate their condition,” Mariel says. “I start with relieving pain first, and then everything else falls into place.”

With training strongly based in neuroscience, owner Mariel Kraus, OTR/L has worked in several settings including internships at a well-respected national rehab center in Southern California where the standards of care for head trauma were written. She is LSVT Certified (an international movement therapy program), a Certified Aging in Place Specialist Occupational Therapist (CAPS-OT) with experience working in the building industry, and currently working on a neurology certification. People with Parkinson’s Disease from around the Puget Sound, as well as out of state, come to this clinic to achieve optimal outcomes through a combination of LSVT Certified Movement therapy and other neuromuscular re-education therapies. At Integrative Therapeutic Solutions, Mariel physically assesses the whole person (from the head down), support system and, when appropriate, home environment. Additionally, her team member, Bob Nussbaum, a certified resiliency instructor, helps their patients’ caregivers stay emotionally and physically healthy by preventing compassion fatigue, which affects primary caregivers. Office manager Pam Mommsen ensures that each patient’s insurance benefits are optimally aligned with their plan of care.

ARTWORK BY EILEEN SCHURER

“I don’t promise to cure anyone, but I promise to work hard at finding out what is causing dysfunction and finding a way to ameliorate their condition,” Mariel says. “I start with relieving pain first, and then everything else falls into place.” Integrative Therapeutic Solutions embodies the three elements of Mariel’s approach to therapy: 1. Integrative: As a neuro-physical occupational therapist, Mariel’s goal is to reintegrate a person back into wellness. After a head injury, stroke or neurologic disorder, the two cerebral hemispheres may become disconnected and need to be reorganized through neurologic integration therapies. Integration of mind, body and home environment is the optimal goal. 2. Therapeutic: Mariel uses a variety of physical rehabilitation techniques using her hands, tools and physical agent modalities such as e-stim, ultrasound, cold laser and infrared light. 3. Solutions: Mariel is a clinical investigator who loves to solve the problems that her patients present with when they come to the clinic. Many have tried and failed at other clinics, and often, Mariel is their last attempt at wellness. As a CAPS-OT, her home assessments offer solutions for issues often missed by contractors and less-experienced CAPS evaluators.

Mariel saw firsthand that her sister’s rehab team’s primary focus was on high productivity rather than taking the time to find answers and relief for her. As Mariel says, “At the end of the day I want to be the hero and my patients to know they get 100 percent of my effort. I like knowing that I have made a difference in the lives of my patients because I took the time to listen, investigate and deliver the highest quality of therapies I have in my tool belt.” The environment Mariel provides her patients is tranquil and private. Here, patients receive one-on-one hands-on time with Mariel and are never rushed; an approach vastly different from other rehab clinics and centers where productivity is the primary focus. Mariel acknowledges those who have aided her in achieving her dream. “I attribute the success of my business first to God, who gave me the vision for starting my private practice and the energy to work long days at building my business,” she says. “Next, my husband Jayson, who believed in me and supports my dream. My teenage son Jacob helps after school a couple of days a week. Finally, teammates Bob and Pam, who have been my cheerleaders at work and in the community.” At Integrative Therapeutic Solutions, Mariel and her team are ready to provide your loved ones with relief while offering their support to the entire family.

Q

. How would you best describe your experience as mayor at this point in your term?

A. Very positive. I jumped right in having studied the city and what it takes. I was ready to give it everything I had, but I need to eat and get sleep and I have put that on the back burner, which I realize I can’t anymore. Stressful is another good word. Each day is a 70-page chapter. I don’t have the luxury of looking back, just stay positive and look forward and be solution oriented. Q. What have been some of the early accomplishments that you are most proud of?

A. Creating a mission and vision statement. Providing more transparency and information for our citizens. Changing the time period for council and citizens to see what is on our agenda for council’s meetings and be a part of our goals. Putting the recording of meetings out the next day before the minutes are made public. I quickly worked with council to keep our Gig Harbor Court in town. Previous council had discussed contracting out our court services across the bridge, but I feel it is an important service to provide our citizens. I reached out to the Haub family that owns the triangle piece of property near the Tides Tavern.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

40

Working with them we have come to a great arrangement whereas the city will hopefully buy it and a house to the south if council approves. It will keep a beautiful tall forest right near the entrance of our town by boat and land. As time goes we can provide some benefits for the public there as well. It was planned to be clear cut soon. I feel looking back 30 years from now we will be proud this was done. Working with Pierce Transit to acquire land for Fish “our local food bank“ to have their new home. It is not a done deal yet but was stuck in the federal government’s hands, and I helped get that freed up with Derek Kilmer’s help.

Moving forward to create concepts for a Sports Complex near the YMCA that our city can provide for its citizens with the help of partners like the YMCA. Finding where we can cut $2 million in the present year’s budget to start to trim our debt. Q. What are some of the bigger challenges that have presented themselves? A. Knowing what to challenge of the city and where there is a different way of thinking. Now I feel I know that and staff is seeing it also. I have been very involved with day-to-day operations and trying to satisfy the needs of 110 employees

and seven councilmembers can be tricky. It is a challenge to not make everyone happy right away, especially the people who voted for me. It’s impossible to make everyone happy no matter how good your rule is. Q. What is your favorite summertime Gig Harbor event or festival and why? A. Blessing of the Fleet. I’ve been here 31 years and I love watching all the fishing boats, and the true meaning to me is blessing the fishermen before they head out to sea. Being at Skansie Park and seeing hundreds of people on our water from SUPs to yachts is a great feeling.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

41

Q. What is your favorite part about living and serving in the community of Gig Harbor? A. The people, the charm and character of Gig Harbor makes it so special. The feeling that we are all connected because of such a great maritime city. I love living near the downtown waterfront and being able to walk to everything I need. Q. How would you like to see business grow and expand in the area while keeping the cultural and natural beauty of the area in tact? A. I would like a more vibrant downtown area and plan to form an advisory group of

business owners, developers and citizens to discuss options for increasing the downtown business area while protecting our beautiful bay and evergreens. I do not want to lose any of our commercial and retail land downtown. It is my goal to have two hours’ worth of shopping downtown. More hands-on businesses where the customer is involved and keeping the businesses unique.

A. I don’t have a favorite, but I do like the options I have along the waterfront from Spiro’s or Susanne’s Bakery and Deli, to a full breakfast at Devoted Kiss and drinks on the water at Anthony’s.

Q. What is your top priority or goal that you would like to accomplish by the end of 2018?

A. Gig Harbor is a beautiful place to live with great schools and people who care about the community. There are many activities in Gig Harbor all throughout the year and several options for enjoying the water—from a gondola ride to stand-up paddle boards and kayaks. Gig Harbor also has options for boat moorage. We have many parks and trails with majestic cedar and fir trees.

A. To manage growth in a way that honors those who live, work and play here. Council passed a six-month moratorium that expires in August as a way to take time to review our current codes.

Q. What would you say about Gig Harbor to people considering moving to the area?

Q. Where are some of your favorite places to grab a bite to eat or a cold drink?

He shares that long-distance running is a sport that is both physically and especially mentally demanding, which means that his mindset and his mental state have a large impact on his performance in competition, regardless of how physically prepared he is. “For me, the key is to stay mentally tough and focused, even when a situation isn’t ideal—and it usually isn’t,” said Bradley. “Setting short-term goals and always having them in the back of my head has helped me.” The competition is something that Bradley said he enjoys most about running. “I am extremely competitive by nature, and the feeling of working hard in a race, followed by a successful result, is exhilarating.”

Bradley said he is interested in engineering and theology. “I enjoy and excel in math and science at Gig Harbor High School, and I’m very active in my Roman Catholic Faith,” he said. Bradley also would like to compete in cross country and track and field at an NCAA Division I university. While the competition has brought camaraderie and challenges, Bradley said that he has learned important life lessons through being involved in athletics. “One thing I’ve learned through high school sports is that through hard work you can achieve things that may have seemed impossible to others. I’ve also found that the key to being successful in anything is desire; if you want it bad enough, you can do it!” 7700 Pioneer Way #202 Gig Harbor, WA 98335 www.cougarwear.com • 253.224.1408 Open 7 Days a Week!

or as long as anybody can remember, Gig Harbor was a hidden jewel that had avoided the anxiety created by a throng of visitors from the big city.

The waterfront stores and eclectic collection of restaurants that populate Pioneer Way in Gig Harbor were a well-kept secret of the community on the far side of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and the savvy boaters who navigated the shallow entrance to the bay. The visitors from Seattle and Tacoma eventually began to descend the drivable getaway in 2010, just in time to rescue some of the longtime merchants during the depth of the economic downturn. “The popularity of Girls Night Out and our Sip and Stroll events helped increase the visibility

of Gig Harbor and expand the economic vitality of Gig Harbor,” said Mary DesMarais, executive director of the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance. “Our Main Street has changed for the better. Community events helped transform Gig Harbor into a destination of choice.”

Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance. The staff has gone on the road over the last 10 years to appeal to boaters by manning booths at boat shows in Seattle and publicizing the waterfront farmers market at markets from Pierce County to Mt. Vernon in Skagit County and on the east side of the Cascades.

The one-day street celebrations have grown from Thursday evenings into three-day events that attract people from throughout the Puget Sound and visitors from out of town. DesMarais said she has heard stories about people who plan vacations from as far away as Connecticut and Arizona to attend waterfront celebrations in Gig Harbor.

“Boaters love farmers markets,” said Josh Sherwin, special projects coordinator for the Alliance. “Gig Harbor has been rated as the No. 1 farmers market in the region in a survey of boaters.”

and problems that face traditional business districts with an emphasis on local ownership with distinctive architecture that create pedestrianfriendly shopping districts. The Main Street philosophy advocates a return to community selfreliance, local empowerment and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts. Sherwin said the Gig Harbor waterfront expands the allure of the commercial district to boaters from harbors all along the West Coast. The Gig Harbor experience has grown to include an Annual Waterfront Block Party that kicks off with an evening of dining and dancing with the Pier to Table dining experience. This summer the waterfront merchants will host a Wine and Food Experience featuring edibles and fine wines from different vendors with each day filled with non-stop entertainment. The popular event will include three opportunities to enjoy all the best of the region’s wines, spirits and hometown brewed beers and ales. The Gig Harbor charm has spread itself to Sundays as well, with restaurants featuring Sunday brunches that range from laid-back casual to elegant champagne dining experiences. The number of people walking between shops and eating in the waterfront restaurants jumped from 200 to 250 to “at least 2,000” almost overnight, according to Sherwin. “People actually look forward to our annual events and plan their

vacations around them,” DesMarais said. “It was not uncommon to hear first-time visitors ask, ‘Who knew this was here?’ The secret was out.” DesMarais said merchants are reluctant to share the actual percentage of how much their businesses have grown over the past decade but have indicated that retail sales over a busy weekend have topped $150,000. That number does not include meals and drinks served at restaurants and taverns. The growth in visitors has not been limited to community events. DesMarais said some retailers are so busy on crowded weekends that customers make the conscience decision to come back so they are able to shop at their own pace. “That tells me our vision for economic growth is working,” she said with a smile. “The rare vacancy in a storefront is now filled almost immediately.

Empty does not stay empty for very long.” As an example, a large grocery store that left when its lease expired was replaced by a collection of small vendors who turned the empty space into a thriving merchant place. “The mission of the Alliance was to increase the exposure of Gig Harbor beyond our loyal base,” said Sherwin. “We’ve been successful at getting the cash registers at stores and restaurants to ring a sweet tune.” Dan Aznoff is a freelance writer based in Mukilteo, Washington. hroughout her career as a family law attorney and mediator in Gig Harbor, Felicia Soleil has focused on creating constructive alternatives to litigation for separating and divorcing couples. Her firm, Family Law Resolutions, was founded on the philosophy that respectful negotiations help you reach durable agreements without going to court. and spousal maintenance.

Divorce Mediation

If one party hires Felicia to be their legal advocate, rather than a neutral mediator, she will often invite the other party to retain their own collaboratively trained attorney and engage in what is called a collaborative divorce. Similar to mediation, this process emphasizes cooperation instead of an endless airing of grievances, encouraging couples to build on areas of mutual agreement. However, the

Mediation is ideal for separating or divorcing couples who want a less adversarial way to transition out of their marriage. Felicia’s role as a neutral divorce mediator allows you to work together to resolve issues related to property and debt distribution, parenting plans, child support

Although Felicia provides you a structured, step-by-step path to overall resolution, the mediation process is less formal, less overwhelming and always less costly than litigation. collaborative divorce process differs from mediation in that each party retains their own attorney. Collaborative divorce is ideal for couples who have difficulty communicating, have a low level of trust between them and prefer having independent legal representation. Revising Support Orders & Parenting Plans There are certain milestones following divorce that require revision of support orders or parenting plans, or creation of agreements with new partners. You or your co-parent may experience a life event, such as a change of job requiring relocation, a child heading off to college or remarriage. The benefits of mediation and collaborative law are available to anyone seeking a non-adversarial way to address issues that arise by a change in circumstance long after the marriage has ended. How do you know if a non-adversarial approach is right for you? Felicia suggests you ask yourself the following:

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

• If my divorce was done well, how do I want to feel at the end? • How do I want my children to experience the creation of two homes? • What is the best use of our funds for professional services? • Am I able to consider the long-term, rather than only focusing on the “now” when emotions are highest? Divorce will always remain a significant life transition. The way you handle the ending of your marriage will influence the rest of your life. If you’ve reached a decision about separation or divorce, Felicia will help you achieve a resolution that fosters both a compassionate ending to your union and a healthy new beginning for you and your family, focusing on what you care about most. TECH TIP BROUGHT TO YOU BY

HOWARD MACKERT, MACKERT AUTOMOTIVE, LLC Back in 1924, Chrysler patented a revolutionary brake system using hydraulic fluid (brake fluid). A little physics lesson: Liquids don’t compress, they transfer pressure. So the pressure from your foot on the pedal transfers 100 percent to the wheels: calipers for disc brakes and wheel cylinders for drum brakes. This is a robust system but does need maintenance. The problem is that brake fluid loves to absorb moisture from the atmosphere. The moisture boils at a much lower temperature than the brake fluid, which could cause the brake pedal to drop to the floor when driving down a long grade, like a mountain pass. The moisture also causes corrosion, which leads to more expensive repairs or outright failure from an external leak. So what do you do? The manufacturers from Europe recommend flushing your brake fluid every two years, whether you’ve driven the car or not. Domestic manufacturers are all recommend a three-year interval, and Asian vehicles vary between the two. At Mackert Automotive, we test your brake fluid with every oil service to make sure you aren’t damaging your system or risking fluid boiling. If you haven’t flushed you fluid in memory, please have it checked.

Stop Chewing Up Your Pillows Channel your energy in a positive way

By Kenny Markwardt, CSCS

IN A LOT OF WAYS, YOU AND I AREN’T ALL THAT DIFFERENT THAN DOGS.

“OK, great observation, Mr. Detective. ‘Don’t leave your dog inside all day. We got it.’ Thanks for the column.”

Before you sit down to write me hate mail, let me tell you what I mean. If you’ve ever owned a dog, you know that if that dog doesn’t get exercise or “work,” it gets destructive and misbehaves. If you leave a dog inside all day without any activity and nowhere to run, undoubtedly that dog will find something to destroy, ingest or bury.

But wait, how much does that parallel your own existence?

And who can blame them? Dogs are remarkably intelligent and are generally quite physically capable. When those two things aren’t indulged appropriately, they’re going to find a way to do it inappropriately.

When left idle, without a constructive problem to solve or without an activity to engage in, do you find destructive things to participate in? Have you ever found yourself creating problems or situations that either weren’t there or didn’t seem to hold any merit once you encountered an actual problem or burnt off some pent-up energy? If so, you are most definitely not alone. When we don’t have an outlet, we revert to our inner canine and go a little crazy.

The best Mother's Day gift you can give yourself? Sleep! A simple way to set yourself up for success: Research published in Early Child Development and Care found that when babies and toddlers with sleep onset problems were given 15-minute massages prior to bedtime for one month, they began to fall asleep sooner than children who didn’t receive massages. And while better sleep is a boon for you, it’s also a brain-builder for babies!

able to get up, play on your phone or dwell on other matters in your life. Now that the sun is starting to come out, going running, hiking, paddling or swimming are fantastic options that exist outside of a traditional gym.

This is best achieved by getting yourself on a regular routine of physical activity. This can be going to a gym, but it doesn’t have to be. It should, however, be something that expends enough energy to both tire your body and is difficult enough that it gives your brain a problem to solve.

The beautiful and often most important part of the whole process is that when you’re finished, you’re relaxed because both your brain and body have been exercised and know they’ve been put to good use.

As an owner of a CrossFit gym, I know firsthand how a physically demanding, intense workout can take your mind off of any other problems that are going on in life. When you have to suffer a little to finish, it’s almost impossible to worry about anything else but the task in front of you.

If you’re feeling stressed, irritable or cranky, go do something physical or find something productive to channel your energy into. Even better than waiting until you feel that way is to find something to do to stay ahead of it. Keep your relationships, your sanity and your pillows safe from your unused energy.

Now, your workout certainly doesn’t have to be CrossFit, but it should be enough that you aren’t

THE TRUTH

ourteen years ago, Kevin came to my dental office worried about his front teeth. He wanted a nicer looking smile but there were complications from orthodontic care he’d received when he was young. He was now in his mid-20s and was just entering the work world. We talked about three options: implants, bridgework or splinting his upper front teeth together on the tongue side and placing veneers.

ABOUT DENTAL

With short roots, some dentists would feel that implants would be the best. It certainly was a good option, but in a paper I published in a scientific peer-reviewed dental journal, I argued, “What if he keeps these teeth five years? Where will we be technologically with implants in the next five years? What if the teeth go 10 or 15 years?”

IMPLANTS

Kevin came back after 14 years. He’d had an accidental blow to his face and one of the veneers came off. It was time to place implants. If you’re considering implants, technology and materials have improved and costs have come down due to competition in the implant market.

Are they right for you?

Implants are a man- or woman-made root. They’re very strong, hassle free and state of the art. You do have to keep them very clean because while they won’t get cavities, you can lose an implant due to gum disease. The Philips Sonicare brushes, the AirFloss, Butler soft picks and an antibiotic liquid called Chlorhexidine are important tools to use with implant maintenance.

BY RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS, UPTOWN DENTAL GIG HARBOR

The process can be quick if the implant can be placed the same day as tooth removal. If not, there’s a stepwise process: tooth removal, bone grafting, healing time, uncover then restoration. You can have implants support a denture and get rid of that loose lower denture! Implant-supported crown and bridgework or the “All on Four” technology is amazing! You may need bone grafting if the tooth has been missing for a while. Bone grafting provides a scaffold for your bone to grow around. I know what you’re thinking: “This sounds painful!” I understand how you feel but, for most patients, placement of an implant is less uncomfortable than removal of a tooth. Implant dentistry is a big decision. It’s important to look at the training and credentials of the dentist and seek a second opinion if you have questions or concerns. You can look and feel better with implants as they help maintain the bone in your face. Without teeth or implants, you lose the bone in the lower third of your face. But the great news is, with today’s technology, you can look and feel younger, plus chew and eat healthier for the rest of your life!

They’re very strong, hassle free and state of the art... for most patients, placement of an implant is less uncomfortable than removal of a tooth. GigHarborLivingLocal.com

HEARING PROTECTION AND FIREARMS

DO I REALLY NEED EARPLUGS FOR THAT? BY DEANNA IFF, AU.D., CCC-A, HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY

I

t is well established that exposure to loud noise can damage hearing; however, one type of noise that is often ignored by the average person is that generated by recreational use of firearms. Often, individuals will not wear hearing protection when firing weapons because they believe the shot is quick enough to eliminate or reduce damage, they are concerned with being able to hear sounds in the environment or they believe the type of gun they have chosen is not loud enough to cause damage. Though not common, it is possible for an individual to suffer a severe hearing loss with as little as one shot. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends peak sound pressure levels (SPL) not exceed 140 decibels (dB) for adults and 120 dB for youth. The maximum peak sound pressure levels from firearms range from approximately 140 to 175 dB. The majority of recreational firearms (excluding small caliber .17/.22 rifles and air rifles) generate between

150 and 175 dB peak SPL. A small .22-caliber rifle can produce noise around 140 dB. Firing guns in a place with hard surfaces where sounds can reverberate off walls and other structures can make noises louder and increase the risk of hearing loss. Also, adding muzzle brakes or other modifications can make the firearm louder. The table below shows the general range of peak SPLs as measured at the left ear of a righthanded shooter for a variety of recreational firearms. Peak SPLs were measured at the left ear due to the higher asymmetric exposure from a rifle or shotgun gunshot and corresponding higher prevalence of hearing loss in the left ear of right-handed shooters. Features such as barrel length influence the peak SPL recorded for a given firearm at the ear of the shooter. For example, pistols have shorter barrel lengths than rifles and shotguns and rank high in peak SPL due in part to the closer proximity of the muzzle to the ears.

Tips to prevent hearing loss when using recreational firearms: • Always wear earplugs/earmuffs that fit well when shooting or when near others who are shooting. • Reduce the number of shots fired. • Shoot smaller cartridge/gauge firearms when possible. • Shoot firearms with longer barrel lengths when possible. • Avoid the use of muzzle brakes/ports. • Avoid shooting in groups, and increase space between shooters if necessary. • Avoid firing simultaneously with other nearby

shooters. • Shoot outdoors or in a sound-treated indoor environment. • Avoid shooting over hard surfaces like benches or tabletops. • Shoot subsonic or low-velocity (<1120 fps) ammunition when feasible. • Use a suppressor. THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM AND REFLEXOLOGY The benefits of reflexology BY DARCIE MILLER, OWNER, LIGHT IN BALANCE REFLEXOLOGY

A Holistic approach to improved health

H

ave you ever taken notice of your feet after you have been sitting for an extended period of time? When you’re on an airplane, a long car ride, in a meeting or class? They may look puffy or swollen; perhaps appear a little red or purplish. The reason for this is the lack of circulation of the blood in your body. In other words, you didn’t move much. Blood circulates to every cell in the body through your circulatory system, which contains more than 60,000 miles of blood vessels and needs regular movement to keep things flowing. Your circulatory system moves more than blood. It also moves lymph—colorless fluid containing white blood cells and interstitial fluids (tissue fluid which is a solution that bathes and surrounds the tissue cells of multicellular animals). It is the main component of the extracellular fluid, which also includes plasma and transcellular fluid. It also transports hormones, nutrients such as water, glucose, amino acids, minerals and vitamins as well as waste such as carbon dioxide and urea. Oxygen is circulated through the pulmonary system to provide fresh oxygen to the blood. How can reflexology help your circulatory system?

• By encouraging oxygen, blood, lymph and interstitial fluid to move through the body • By restoring normal blood pressure • By eliminating excess fluid retention Reflexology works by applying gentle pressure to specific reflex points in the feet, hands or ears to help fresh oxygen, food and nutrients move through the body as it reacts to the reflex action. Often a combination of feet, hands and ears will be used in one session. Reflex areas and points can be found for all of the body’s systems in these three areas. If a client cannot tolerate having their feet touched or there is a contraindication for not touching the feet (infection, broken bones, etc.), reflexology can be performed on the hands and/or ears or both. If a client smokes or is on certain medications, their circulatory system may be affected. Medical conditions such as diabetes, Raynaud’s syndrome, hypertension or high blood pressure also affect the circulatory system. Adding regular sessions of reflexology to any care you are receiving from your medical provider can benefit those with chronic circulatory symptoms. In many cases, regular weekly sessions for four to six weeks and then continued monthly sessions could help maintain optimum benefits and enhance overall circulation and health.

Don’t let seasonal allergies slow you down!

Put it Out … For Good! Get F ired Up to Stop Smoking BY DR. TORY TWITO, PEDIATRICS NORTHWEST, P.S.

A

s a pediatrician, one thing that I know for sure is that parents want healthy lives for their children and themselves. One way we can work to ensure this is to join together to combat exposure to tobacco from cigarettes and e-cigarettes. The exposure of second-hand (breathing in the toxins) and third-hand (ingesting the toxins) smoke are dangerous to all of us. Smoking is hard on our lungs and heart. Studies have shown that early signs of heart disease and stroke can be found in adolescents who smoke. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, 5.6 million kids under the age of 18 who are alive today will ultimately die from smoking-related disease. More than 11 percent of high school students will be smokers by the time they leave high school.

Our board-certified allergists, immunologists & pulmonologists specialize in diagnosis and treatment of: • allergies/hay fever • asthma/respiratory disorders • food allergies • eczema/hives • sinus problems • immune disorders • chronic cough

In 2013, there were more than 8,000 reports of potentially toxic exposure to tobacco and nicotine products among children aged 5 or younger, caused primarily by young children ingesting cigarettes. Take a look at these numbers: • 400,000: the number of people killed by tobacco in the United States each year—more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murder and suicide combined. •790,000: the number of children who get ear infections from exposure to second-hand smoke each year. •400,000 to 1,000,000: the number of kids with asthma whose condition is aggravated by second-hand smoke each year. • 150,000 to 300,000: the number of new cases of bronchitis and pneumonia caused by secondhand smoke each year. • 7,500 to 15,000: the number of kids who end up in the hospital each year from second-hand smoke exposure. •300: the number of children injured in smokingcaused fires each year.

conditions caused by smoking, including 400 from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). After birth, the effects of tobacco use still linger, increasing the chances of SIDS, respiratory disorders, ear and eye problems, growth and mental retardation, attention deficit disorder and other learning, developmental and behavioral, up to and including criminality. Now that you have the sobering facts, what can you do? There are many resources available to help smokers quit. If you are a smoker, call 800. QUIT.NOW (800.784.8669). Or talk to your pediatrician or your primary care physician. We are here to help make your life and the lives of all children healthier. We want to support you along the way, as we don't expect this to be easy, but quitting will be worth it. You will be liberated, you’ll be the healthiest role model for your kids—and you will be decreasing the risk that they will start using tobacco products. Let’s protect all those we hold dear. SUMMER SUNSCREEN YOUR GUIDE TO SAFE SUN

Your friendly, neighborhood Gig Harbor dentist.

By Bri Willia ms, RN, BSN

W

ith summer quickly approaching, many of us are making plans to get the most out of the nice weather. And while summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, there is a necessary step to take before heading out into the sun. We have all heard that we need to be wearing sunscreen every day, and this is especially important in the sunny summer months. Unprotected sun exposure increases your risk for skin cancer and premature aging. When the skin is unprotected from ultraviolet radiation (UVR) for a period of time, our skin cells are damaged. Skin cancers (most commonly melanoma, basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas) and aging occur when this damage affects the DNA of genes that control skin-cell growth. One easy way to protect our skin and decrease our risk is to wear sunscreen. With dozens of sunscreen choices on the shelf, it can be difficult to know what to look for in a sunscreen. All sunscreens protect against UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburns and skin cancers, but UVA rays also contribute to skin cancers and premature aging. Having protection from both is crucial. When selecting a sunscreen, be sure it is labeled “broad spectrum,” meaning it blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Choose a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. The higher the SPF the more protection the sunscreen provides against UVB rays. However, there is only a small increase in protection as you go higher. For example, SPF 15 filters out approximately 93 percent of UVB rays, while SPF 30 filters 97 percent and SPF 100 filters 99 percent. Even more important than the strength of the sunscreen is how often you reapply it. Sunscreen should be re-applied at least once every two hours and more frequently after swimming, sweating or towel drying. Beyond wearing (and re-applying) sunscreen daily, there are additional steps you can take to further decrease your risk of skin cancer and premature aging. Look for shade to limit your direct exposure to the sun between the hours of 10am and 4pm, when UV rays are the strongest. Choose lightweight clothing and hats to cover as much skin as possible, and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. Lastly, avoid tanning beds and sunlamps. A tan today is not worth skin cancer tomorrow. With proper skin protection, there is no reason you can’t enjoy all that summer has to offer. Apply your sunscreen 15 minutes before you head outside, and pack it with you for re-application throughout the day. Wear lightweight clothing for added protection and find a shady spot whenever you can. The sun’s out; go enjoy it!

SEASONAL ALLERGIES An irritating time of year BY HOLLY A. CARLING, O.M.D., L.AC., PH.D.

S

pring has sprung, and with it a host of irritants in the air as a result! One in six Americans suffer from allergies, and the incidence of allergy-driven asthma has doubled since 1980. It is estimated that 35 million Americans suffer from environmental allergies. An allergic reaction occurs when a substance, otherwise harmless, when coming in contact with the mucus membranes, stimulate an improper, over-reactive response. These substances can be environmental (such as pollens, weeds, flowers, dust or mold), chemical based (such as plastics, formaldehydes, metals, perfumes, room deodorizers) or ingested substances (including foods, vitamins, medications, drinks), etc. Symptoms can range from runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, hives and other rashes, mood changes (especially anger, irritability and depression), asthma, sleeplessness and various pains. Many health problems Americans face are undiagnosed allergic reactions. Symptomatic treatment is not hard to find. Many are content with over-the-counter medications, while many prefer to not medicate allergies. They are aware that there are many remedies that don’t involve drugs. According to Mary Hardy, MD, director of Integrative Medicine at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, "Using naturebased products can be a very useful way to handle mild allergies and a useful adjunct for more significant allergies, and there are many types of treatments you can safely try." She goes on to mention some well-researched herbs that have shown to be helpful. She also recommends saline washes. "The saline works to wash out pollen and reduce or thin mucous, [and] goldenseal has astringent and local antibacterial properties which can aid in this process.” James Dillard, MD, clinical advisor to Columbia University's Rosenthal Center for Complementary

"ACUPUNCTURE CAN BE PARTICULARLY USEFUL IF YOU ARE SUFFERING FROM MULTIPLE ALLERGIES, SINCE IT WORKS TO QUIET THE AREAS OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM THAT ARE OVERSTIMULATED BY EXPOSURE TO MULTIPLE IRRITATING FACTORS."

and Alternative Medicine and assistant clinical professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, has also found combinations of herbs and herbal substances to be helpful in treating allergies. In addition to herbs, Dr. Dillard recommends acupuncture for treating allergies. He says, "Acupuncture can be particularly useful if you are suffering from multiple allergies, since it works to quiet the areas of the immune system that are overstimulated by exposure to multiple irritating factors." According to an article in WebMD, “In addition to whatever natural treatments you try on your own, you may also find significant relief visiting a practitioner of the ancient Chinese medical practice known as acupuncture. Based on the idea that stimulating points outside the body can change or initiate reactions inside, in this case, treatment is thought to affect the immune system where allergic reactions begin. “In a small but significant study of 26 hay-fever patients published in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine, acupuncture reduced symptoms in all 26—without side effects. A second study of some 72 people totally eliminated symptoms in more than half with just two treatments.” Typically, more than two treatments are required, but the success rate, especially with the addition of herbal medicine and dietary modifications, is impressive. There are many options for those interested in resolving allergies naturally. This does not have to be an irritating time of year! Dr. Holly Carling is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Licensed Acupuncturist, Doctor of Naturopathy, Clinical Nutritionist and Master Herbologist with nearly four decades of experience. A Life Left Behind Rachel Jeffs and her five children escape a polygamous lifestyle and her father, Warren Jeffs BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTO COURTESY OF RACHEL JEFFS

I

f you are a parent, you know you would do anything for your child. But imagine being told your entire life what you must eat, how you must dress—right down to which arm you put through your sleeve first—whom you will marry and what you name your children. Then, envision being separated from your children and living in isolation for months at a time. That is exactly what Rachel Jeffs endured until she and her five children were finally able to escape the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) led by Rachel’s father, Warren Jeffs, the self-proclaimed Prophet who received worldwide notoriety as the leader of the polygamous cult. Warren Jeffs is now serving a life sentence for the abuse he inflicted on children, marrying girls as young as 12 years old. Rachel’s life is documented in her recently released book, “Breaking Free.” Rachel is the third of Warren Jeffs’ 53 children and is said to have been his favorite. “He kept me with him the most,” said Rachel, adding that it was for all the wrong reasons. He began to sexually abuse his daughter when she was 8 years old. The abuse stopped when Rachel was 16 after she wrote her father a letter confronting him of his transgressions. She knew the man she still refers to as “Father” was not a good man. After all, who could preach about not letting boys touch you until you are married and then turn around and do such horrible things to his own daughter? But the No. 1 rule of the FLDS church was never to question the Prophet. Although Rachel knew he was not the Prophet he claimed to be, she loved her family and did not know how she would ever make a life for herself in the outside world. So, she stayed. “I just made the best of it,” said Rachel, who was taught that those on the “outside” were evil. One of the rules of the cult was that no one could seek medical help without Warren Jeffs’ permission. It is that kind of control that took the life of Rachel’s mother at the young age of 39 from breast cancer. Two years passed from the time she found her first lump to when Warren Jeffs allowed her to go to the doctor, but by then it was too late. “I blame Father for making my mother’s life so miserable at the end,” Rachel said. At that time, her mother’s younger children were taken away from her when she needed them most. It was an abandonment and isolation that Rachel would experience when she, too, was taken away from her children for perceived transgressions. Rachel married her husband Rich when she was just 18. It was a marriage arranged by her father, and Rachel first met Rich the day before her wedding. Warren Jeffs told Rachel and her sister, Becky, on a Sunday that

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

they would be married “soon,” and within a week, their wedding dresses were made, and the sisters were both married women; Rachel to Rich and Becky to his brother. Rachel was Rich’s third wife in the polygamous marriage, and although she did not know him when they first married, she says she grew to love him. “I loved him as much as I could in that situation,” said Rachel, now 34 years old, who last saw Rich in February of 2013. Rachel confided in both her mother and Rich about the abuse. Her mother confronted Warren Jeffs about it, but she never mentioned the abuse to Rachel again. Rich also talked to Warren Jeffs about it, and after summoning both Rachel and Rich to meet with him, Warren said he was “educating” Rachel about men and that the topic was never to be brought up again. And that is when the isolation truly began, keeping Rachel from other members of her family for sometimes years at a time. But even after Warren Jeffs’ arrest in August of 2006, the control he had over the cult members did not stop. He continued to rule the cult from behind bars, using his brothers to issue his commands. And by all accounts, he continues to do so today. Over the years, Rachel gave birth to five children. At one time, Rachel was sent to live in isolation for seven months while still nursing her youngest child. When she was reunited with them, her youngest child did not remember her. It was heartbreaking.

FEATURE STORY The isolation was not only from her children but from other members of the cult, including her family. “We had cell phones, but we could not get on the Internet,” Rachel said. “We could only call the Bishop, and our phone numbers were always changed.” While in isolation, Rachel made a lot of her kids’ scrapbooks and recorded songs. “I sat in the sun a lot because it made me feel good,” she said. “I kept telling myself I had to stay strong for my kids. You can either be strong or break. And it’s so much easier to be strong when you’re doing it for someone else. It’s easy to give up on yourself.” It was also during the seven-month long separation from her children that Rachel made the decision she had to escape. But the timing had to be right. Then it came. A phone call in late 2015 from her Uncle Lyle telling her that because she had disobeyed the church by engaging in simple fun, which was considered a sin, she and her children would be moved to her uncle’s home where they could watch over her and the children. They wanted to pick her up that night, but Rachel was able to buy some time and convinced Uncle Lyle to wait until the next day. And then she made the phone call that would change her life. She called her sisters Angela and Becky, who had already left the church, to come and pick up her five children, ranging in age from 4 to 12 years old at the time. Rachel was almost always being watched by members of the cult, and her sisters saw that a familiar car was following them as they made their way to pick up Rachel’s kids. Angela and Becky drove around until the car was no longer trailing them. When they were sure it was safe, they quickly drove up to the gate where Rachel and her children were waiting. Rachel waved good-bye to her five children, telling them they were going to a sleepover with their cousins. The next day, Rachel packed up the lives of her and her five children while members of the church constantly pounded on her locked

me that my story has given them the courage to leave an abusive situation.”

TODAY, SHE AND BRANDON LIVE IN A HOME IN AN AREA WHERE THE KIDS CAN BE FREE TO LIVE THEIR LIVES; IT IS SOMETHING SHE WOULD DREAM ABOUT WHILE IN ISOLATION. doors and called her cell phone. She did not respond. She left in the dark as her children had the night before. “If I was caught, I would have to deal with all the mental torture of the [cult] members. I knew the police would support me and that I could call 911 if I needed to, but I did not want to face anyone.”

Rachel, too, struggled for a while wondering how she would manage. “The hardest thing was figuring out how to support my family and realizing my children’s dad did not seem to care,” she said. Rachel had left school after the eighth grade and began to teach third grade in the school where her father served as principal.

Her maternal grandparents assisted Rachel and the children after their escape. They were in the cult for two years but left, leaving their two daughters, Rachel and Becky’s mothers, behind. They were two of Warren Jeffs’ more than 70 wives.

Rachel said her biggest shock following her escape was to see that the outside world was not how it was portrayed to her during her entire life. “I was surprised to see how good and kind people were and how they made me feel good about leaving,” she said of the support she received.

Rachel said her children have adjusted well to their new life. Initially, it was difficult to realize they would never see their dad or many other members of their family again, but today they enjoy the time they spend with their cousins— Rachel’s sister Becky, her husband (Rich’s brother who left the cult) and their children, who live nearby. “It’s considered a bad weekend if we don’t spend time with them,” Rachel said of the bond they all share. It was also an adjustment for her children to go to a school that was not run by the cult and wear clothes that were different from what they were used to. “Now they just want to live their lives.”

Of her sister wives, Rachel said there was always jealousy. But the women were told to always be sweet. To ensure harmony for her children, Rachel did her best to get along with everyone, fearing if she didn’t she would be taken away from her children. Rachel said during her times of isolation that she relied on God and continues to do so to this day. “To survive, I had to rely on God. He has helped me so much just trying to survive,” she said. She reads the Bible to her children but does not attend church.

She and her children lived with her grandparents for a while and were able to receive assistance for food. Rachel also taught violin to help earn money. But it was difficult.

Rachel said that publishing “Breaking Free” was nothing short of a miracle. Her story has been shared on Dateline and Megyn Kelly of NBC, inspiring people across the globe. “People share with me that my story has given them the courage to leave an abusive situation,” she said.

When asked why more people don’t leave, Rachel responded, “Everyone’s been told to not talk to people on the outside. They are told the outside world is lying about the Prophet [Warren Jeffs]. It’s a lifetime of brainwashing. Everyone in the cult was born into it. There are no converts. One of the most damaging things is to believe that someone like the Prophet can do no wrong. No one is perfect.”

Today, Rachel lives in North Idaho with her husband, Brandon. Together they have nine children and one on the way, due in July. Brandon left the FLDS in Canada in 2012 but never lived a polygamous life, yet he understands what Rachel went through because he witnessed it in his own life. His exwife remains in the church and together they share custody of four children.

Rachel communicates with five of her siblings who have also left the FLDS and still has contact with a younger sibling who remains in the cult. But for fear of retribution against that sibling, Rachel does not divulge the name or gender. As for Warren Jeffs, he has tried to reach out to Rachel both before and after her escape. His home is now prison, a place Rachel hopes he remains for the rest of his life. If he ever gets released, Rachel said she will confront him in a legal setting for what he did to her. As to why his edicts have grown more bizarre over time, Rachel can only speculate. “He could be taking out his pain of being in prison on everyone else,” she said. “But his solitary confinement is much better than when I was in isolation. He can receive calls, write letters and receive visitors.” Rachel’s biggest fear was that she would never see her children again. Today, she is grateful that she never has to worry about that. “On my worst day out [of the cult], I would never want to go back,” said Rachel, who continues to have nightmares of her life back then. When asked if she could say anything to people who remain in the cult, she said, “No man is perfect, and if you really listen to your heart, it would tell you that something is wrong.” She said Warren Jeffs is a hypocrite and a liar, and it was easy to see that what he was doing to her

AND THEN SHE MADE THE PHONE CALL THAT WOULD CHANGE HER LIFE. SHE CALLED HER SISTERS ANGELA AND BECKY, WHO HAD ALREADY LEFT THE CHURCH, TO COME AND PICK UP HER FIVE CHILDREN, RANGING IN AGE FROM 4 TO 12 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME. was wrong, and when he blamed her, it was heart wrenching. “At the same time, I was glad when he admitted to me that he was wrong,” she said. Rachel said her biggest realization in the outside world is just how much it takes to support a family. “When I first left, I wondered if I would ever be able to even buy a house,” she said. Today, she and Brandon live in a home in an area where the kids can be free to live their lives; it is something she would dream about while in isolation.

“I wanted to live on a farm where I could take care of my kids,” said Rachel, who more than anything just wanted to be a mom and make sure her kids were happy. “I wanted them to have a good education and not worry about being told they were bad.” She tells her children that their father loved them and just had too many kids—a total of 22 when Rachel and the children escaped—to get close to them. Rachel is busy being what she always wanted to be—a mom. She loves to write and has always enjoyed photography. But with another baby due in July, some of those hobbies may just have to wait. And that is more than OK with her. “My priority is my kids. I want them to live a happy and healthy life,” said Rachel. “I want to be there for them, make them meals and help with their homework.” In the end, there is one message above all that Rachel hopes she can send to people: “No matter what you’ve gone through, you can be strong and be anything you want.” Check your local bookstores for “Breaking Free” by Rachel Jeffs. It is also available on Amazon.com and HarperCollins.com.

Success TIPS FOR

What can you do to set yourself apart? BY PATTY HUTCHENS

I

t’s the time employees either dread or look forward to—the annual review. Many go through their day-to-day tasks without giving much thought to what can really make them stand out in their boss’s mind when it comes time to look back and discuss the successes and challenges of the previous year. But what if you made a conscious effort throughout the year to truly stand out among your colleagues? I’m not saying one has to create a competitive atmosphere in the workplace but instead go above and beyond the expectations of those who sign the paychecks. There are many ways to differentiate oneself, and they can also go a long way to helping you enjoy your job even more! First, start out by doing a review of your job description. If you do not have one, take the initiative and ask your supervisor for one. It helps to define the expectations and role you play in the business. Not only that, it is a good point of reference when it comes time for your review. Beyond performing your job duties in an exceptional manner, there are other ways to help you stand out. Here are just a few: Attitude – The way you approach even the most difficult tasks can go a long way to success in the workplace. When faced with a challenge, what is your reaction? Do you meet it with dread or do you see it as something you can learn from? When it comes to those you work with, are you one to greet your co-workers and clients or customers with a smile? Words of encouragement to others can help boost the morale in the workplace climate and can also be contagious! Set Goals – Every month or quarter, set some specific goals for you to accomplish in your job. Don’t just commit them to memory; write them down and share them with your supervisor or a co-worker. Also, outline what needs to be done to achieve each specific goal. Review the list on a regular basis to make sure you are on track. By taking this initiative, it demonstrates to those around you that you are committed to achieving not only individual success but success for the business as a whole. Be a Problem Solver – Many occupations require both independence and collaboration. When faced with a specific problem, do you immediately go to your supervisor or manager? Instead, do your best to think it through before seeking out help. Looming deadlines can sometimes cause urgency, but if you have time and can propose some solutions, it will help everyone in the long run. Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses – Being placed in a role that is as foreign to you as a second language can be intimidating and can set you up for failure. On the other hand, doing something in which you have full confidence in your ability can lead to great success. Be realistic and honest with your boss immediately from the interview process forward, but don’t dwell on your weaknesses. Emphasize your talents and strengths and provide examples of how those will be an asset to the business. Build Relationships – The foundation of any successful relationship is treating others with respect. Whether it is your boss, colleagues, those

you may supervise or your clients, it is an essential trait to be successful in both your professional and personal life. Remember that relationships are not built overnight; many take time to grow. By being consistent and positive, you will find success naturally follows. Be Reliable – An employee who is reliable and can meet deadlines and carry their own weight is highly valued by employers. To prove your reliability, do not over promise things that cannot be achieved by a deadline or that you are not capable of doing. Maintain an open line of communication with your colleagues, and when you do fall short, be accountable and do what you can to make amends. Go Beyond the Minimum – This should go without saying, but many people simply just view the scope of their job too narrowly. Instead, realize the potential growth your position has and do your best to know your job inside and out. Not only will you improve your abilities, but you will also be able to be more creative and expand on the position. Be a Team Player – It is almost the end of your work day, and you find you may have time to breathe a little bit having accomplished all the tasks set before you. But you see a co-worker who is struggling with a heavy workload, and you have not only the time to help but also the ability and knowledge. Reaching out to others to help out not only helps to build relationships but promotes a team atmosphere.

Strong Communication Skills – Being able to communicate both verbally and through the written word is an essential component when it comes to getting along with others and persuading others to listen to your ideas. Technology has brought us into a world of continuous communication, and being able to communicate effectively is vital. Experts advise that when communicating, we often assume others are in the same mindset as we are. Obviously, this is rarely the case. This is where active listening skills can be of extreme importance. Listen without interruption and, instead of instantly starting to form or articulate a response, take time to formulate a response before replying. While it may take time and practice, the ability to actively listen to others in the workplace will pay off in the long run. Maintain an Open Mind – By showing flexibility and that you have an open mind, others will find you more approachable and trustworthy. They will be more willing to share their point of view and seek feedback from you. While everyone’s job differs, and personalities do as well, these points are good reminders of what it takes to not only be successful in the workplace but what you can do to achieve even greater job satisfaction.

T

hink back to 20-plus years ago. We punched time clocks, worked 8am to 5pm, and wrote letters and made phone calls to communicate. Not only that, but telecommuting was not even in our vocabulary. But as technology has advanced, so has the way in which society functions when it comes to conducting business. With nearly everyone carrying a cell phone with them at all times, we no longer have to continuously try to call someone only to be met with an annoying busy signal—something that is foreign to the younger generation—or to be told someone is not available. Instead, we can reach out to that person directly either by phone or text and leave our message before going onto our next task.

Work From Home

With the introduction of “you’ve got mail,” the way we communicate with others was forever changed. Email has become the primary way of communicating when it comes to business. And why not? It’s instantaneous, easy and efficient. It also creates a record of when something was sent and to whom. Through services such as MailChimp, you can communicate with a vast amount of people at once, something that in the past would have driven an office assistant crazy with stacks of envelopes and racing to make sure items get to the post office on time. But if you are like me, when it comes to communication in our personal lives, nothing can replace a handwritten note that one can find stuck away in a book years later and bring a smile to their face or a tear to their eyes. I guess that’s for another story though. Scheduling meetings has become increasingly easier with the introduction of video conferencing and conference calls. The cost savings is probably the most significant when it comes to this aspect of technology. Instead of getting in our cars or even traveling by plane to an important meeting, people from around the world can simply log onto their computers and have a face-to-face meeting instantaneously. (However, if you are telecommuting, you may want to change out of those pajamas before doing so!). Another aspect of conferencing online is that you are even able to share your screen with others, so it is as if they are right in the room looking over your shoulder. Speaking of sharing screens, Google Docs has revolutionized the way people do business.

Whether it is a spreadsheet or word document, being able to share information with others and make revisions is a huge timesaver for those who are collaborating on a business project. With all of these advances in technology, the world of telecommuting has exploded and is seen as the way of the future for many companies. The advantages are many. Increase in Productivity – OK, it may not be for the easily distracted, but telecommuting in general has shown a significant increase in productivity. After all, no longer is commuting to and from work taking up a portion of our mornings and afternoons; instead, one who works from home is able to begin their workday earlier and maybe have the added benefit of “clocking out” earlier as well. Also, while

working from home one does not encounter the distractions of co-workers, water cooler time and longer lunches.

by Staples Advantage, 80 percent of those who were telecommuters reported being satisfied with their work-life balance.

Health Benefits – More time at home without the stress of a commute allows more time to take care of ourselves. One finds more time to be active, prepare healthy meals and is overall less stressed. Not only does this lead to better health but also higher morale as well.

Decrease in Overhead – By allowing employees to work from home, businesses are experiencing a huge savings when it comes to overhead costs. American Express recently reported they save between $10 and $15 million annually after implementing telecommuting for some of its employees.

The health benefits of telecommuting extend beyond the individual employee—it also has less impact on the environment. Think of how much less fuel is being used when one commutes across the hall to his or her home office instead of driving 20 miles roundtrip each day. Now who can argue with that? Employee Satisfaction – Employers can spend thousands of dollars with the hire of a new employee. The time it takes to train individuals also leads to less productive time only to have an employee leave. By implementing telecommuting, businesses are seeing less of a turnover and higher employee satisfaction. And even better, they are also experiencing an increase in productivity. In a study conducted

According to Forbes magazine, a quarter of all employed Americans are now working from home. Thanks to the advancements in technology, we can say goodbye to the traditional workplace and discover healthier and happier workers. From seniors who are seeking a more flexible schedule instead of retirement to mothers and fathers of children who want a better work-family balance, it is the new way of conducting business. Whether you are an employee who would like to have your employer consider the idea or an employer who may want to offer this option to your employees, here are some important factors to consider:

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

86

- Will there be frequent contact between the manager and the employee? You may want to institute progress reports and check-ins on either a daily or weekly basis. - Both sides should have a clear understanding of the terms of the agreement. For instance, the employee will still have appropriate childcare when working from home, so they devote all their time to their job. - If uncertain, the employer should institute a trial period for a set period of time with an option to renew it and include a clause where either party may end the agreement at any time. - Outline number of hours per week that an employee will telecommute as opposed to being in the office, who shall supply the equipment and supplies, and also address safety issues and who is responsible for injuries sustained. Yes, technology may drive us crazy at times, but in the end it is providing us with more efficiency in the workplace and happier employees!

Don't Get Lost in the Pile of Paper! Tips to make your resume stand out! By Patty Hutchens

THE REALITY IS THAT FOR SOME EMPLOYERS, sorting through resumes can mean some never get read. It’s unfortunate for those who put a lot of time in creating the “perfect” resume, but when a large volume of applications are submitted for a certain position, not all of them can be given an in-depth read. So just what can you do to make your resume stand out among the rest? Here are a few tips to help you get started.

1.

Making a good first impression is important. Your resume should have a brief summary at the top of the page outlining your career, skills and accomplishments. Do not bury them in the text of summaries of previous positions; make it simple for those reviewing your resume to see the information and learn right away why you may be just the candidate they are looking for!

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

88

2.

With the increase of online applications and screening software to sort through resumes, making sure you have the right keywords in your resume is vital. Review the job description and take words from that when highlighting your experience. For instance, if the job posting lists “administrative assistant” do not put “receptionist” on your resume.

3.

We are all attracted to color. While you do not want your resume to be over the top with vibrant colors, you do want it to stand out. Keep your text black but go ahead and add a little color such as red, orange or navy blue, either in lines or small graphics. Make it clean and easy to read.

4.

Tailor your resume to the specific job and employer. There is a fine line between providing too much information and not enough. Go through the job description to determine what qualities the hiring manager is looking for. Highlight those specific qualities and make a note of certain points that are mentioned repeatedly. Those are the traits you want to specifically address when listing your experience and skills. Keep in mind that yours is one of many the reader is going through, so make it stand out but not too over the top.

Vashon Island – Heart of the Sound A WEEKEND GETAWAY WITH YOUR BEST GALS

G

rab your best gals and plan a weekend getaway to Vashon Island – Heart of the Sound. With three ferry terminals on the island, if you live in Seattle, Tacoma or out on the Kitsap Peninsula, it’s just a short ferry ride and a world away. Coming from North Idaho, it is a further jaunt but makes a great base for a longer vacation. You can easily reach Seattle, the Olympic Peninsula and Tacoma from the island. When looking for a location for a girlfriends’ weekend, you want a great place to stay with a nice spot to sip a glass of wine or cocktail, quaint shops, yummy restaurants and lots of local flavor. Vashon fits the bill, and the best part is it’s not well known as a tourist destination, and its close proximity means you spend more time on your weekend and less time traveling. One of the best-kept secrets on the island is the beautiful, historic waterfront homes available as vacation rentals on some of the most pristine natural areas on the island. The Vashon Park District manages the Belle Baldwin House at Fern Cove Park and the Keepers’ Quarters at Point Robinson Lighthouse Park. For a girls’ weekend, there is no question that it must be the Belle Baldwin House. In 1912, she became the state’s first female physician. Located at Fern Cove Park, the home is set in a forested area with a nice lawn overlooking 750 feet of Puget Sound beach, perfect for sunsets and cocktails. The home has a fully stocked kitchen, three bedrooms, one bathroom and sleeps six. Fully restored with a vintage vibe, it has all the household items you need for a comfortable stay. Friday. Try to get an early afternoon start to beat rush-hour traffic for the ferry. Plan to swing by the Sugar Shack to pick up dinner before heading to the Baldwin House. The Sugar Shack is the brain child of owner Hedy Anderson. She is known around the island as “The Caramel Lady” for the delectable candy she makes for her business King Caramel. In 2017, she paired with Chef Wally Bell to start the Sugar Shack, a unique food shop that carries local treats and sells prepared meals for take-out. You’ll often hear locals asking Chef Wally, “What’s for dinner?” when they see him around town. The shack is open Monday through Friday from 4 to 7pm. Check their Facebook page to see what they are serving and just swing by to pick up a meal. Don’t forget some King Caramels for dessert.

WHEN LOOKING FOR A LOCATION FOR A GIRLFRIENDS’ WEEKEND, YOU WANT A GREAT PLACE TO STAY WITH A NICE SPOT TO SIP A GLASS OF WINE OR COCKTAIL, QUAINT SHOPS, YUMMY RESTAURANTS AND LOTS OF LOCAL FLAVOR. VASHON FITS THE BILL.

Saturday. Start your morning at the Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie. It is located in the center of the island in a building more than 100 years old. A hub of island life, you’ll find plenty of coffee, antiques and may even see the vintage roaster humming away. This is where friendly locals hang out. It’s a great place to sip some coffee and learn about things to do on the island, like the live music jam on weekends that you must be vetted by a local before receiving the location. . A step into Vashon Bodywork and your cares start to slip away as the soothing music, aromatic smells and luxury venue work their magic. The only therapeutic and organic spa on the island is the brainchild of owner Deja Mariee Star. She believes that living a green lifestyle is not a trend but a state of mind. The products and services at Vashon Body Works reflect that philosophy. The spa uses and sells products that are made from hand-picked fresh plants and botanicals which are rich in minerals, nutrients and vitamins. Everything is chemical-free, non-toxic and 100-percent organically grown. Star can tailor a visit for a small group. Services include massage, therapeutic bodywork for chronic pain, organic facials, waxing and sugaring, and many more; by appointment only. After the spa treatments, swing in to the Pure Organic Café and Juicery located next door for a quick pick-me-up. This cute little place serves

organic, vegan and gluten-free food items and juices. A quick swig of an energy-packed juice shot and you’ll be set for some marathon shopping in Vashon. Pure strives to use local island produce when in season and sources from Washington and Oregon as well. Spend the rest of the day in “Downtown Vashon” enjoying the shops and having lunch. Plan to pick up items throughout the day for dinner back at the Belle Baldwin House. One of the most interesting shops on the island has a large metal Giraffe outside its namesake shop. It’s perfect for a girls’ trip selfie. Once inside you will love the carefully curated collection from more than 45 countries and local artists from the Pacific Northwest. When you walk in the door, you are warmly greeted and offered a spot of tea. Owner Priscilla is passionate about fair trade and the artisans who hand make many of the treasures sold at her store. Each item has its own unique story that she is happy to share with her guests. Gather is a unique venture. A mother-daughter team opened this space, which is part art gallery and part just a great place to hang out, hence the name—Gather. The gallery is bright and cheerful with many places to sit and a large dramatic table, a work of art on its own which serves as a place for art classes or events. Visit the Facebook page before you visit Vashon as there are often art classes held. One recent class was on Travel Journal Sketching with watercolor pencils. Local artists have found a

great venue to sell their work, and you will find many beautiful pieces hand made by those who call Vashon home. You have to love a baking company that creates most of its products from handmade croissant dough. My first visit here was over a year ago, and I still remember the crisp, buttery croissant from that visit, still just as memorable on this visit. They sell a mixture of sweet and savory pastries with a croissant-dough base. Try a croissant dog for something different. It’s a hotdog baked with a croissant wrapped around it. Their most popular items are their cookies. Plan to pick up pastries for a Sunday morning breakfast. No visit to Vashon is complete without a visit to The Hardware Store Restaurant. Owner Melinda Powers has created a great local hangout. The building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, also serves as a gallery for local artists and a musical venue for events and fundraisers. The food is great! Locally sourced, organic, all-natural and hormone-free ingredients make up a menu of classic food items that just taste better. It’s a perfect stop for a late lunch and is located in the midst of all the shops so you can take a break whenever you like.

Before heading back to Fern Cove, visit Nashi Orchards and taste the Perry. This is a wine made from various types of pears with a bit of fizz added to it. They also handcraft apple ciders. Both are very refreshing on a warm day. Owner Jim Gerlach works very hard to manage the soil and condition of the trees. His attention to detail shows in his award-winning products. Plan to enjoy a tasting, then explore the orchards and visit with the herd of St. Croix sheep. After a busy day, head back to the Baldwin House. Fern Cove Park adjacent to the house is a scenic spot to walk, beachcomb or birdwatch. The little bridge heading up to the house is a good place to take photos. The home is perfectly equipped to throw together a simple supper to share with the gals. Enjoy the sunset while sipping a glass of Perry. Sunday. Appreciate a hot cup of coffee and pastries from Vashon Island Baking Company for breakfast. Morning is a magical time at the cove. Often a fog has rolled in and you can hear the sounds of the cove with the view obscured by the mist. After check out, head to the ferry terminal to begin your trip home. If you have extra time, there are plenty of places to hike on the island or enjoy the many waterfront parks.

Focaccia with Fresh Sage Ingredients:

Courtesy of Millville Pizza Co. This recipe makes one focaccia approximately 12x24 inches

• • • • • •

5 cups white flour (1,000 grams) 1 ¾ cups water (75°F) 2 tsp. salt 2 ½ tsp. Instant Dry Yeast ¾ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 cup fresh sage

Materials: • 1 baking sheet • 1 cooling rack

Method:

• First Mix - In a small bowl, sprinkle the yeast over the warm water, stir and let rest for 5 minutes to dissolve. • Second Mix - In a large mixing bowl, combine 5 cups of white flour and 2 tsp. salt. Add yeast mixture and ½ cup extra virgin olive oil and mix until smooth. Cover and let rest for 20 minutes. • Kneed - Turn onto work surface and knead for 5 to 8 minutes, adding flour if needed. The dough should remain soft but not sticky. Set the dough in an oiled container, cover with plastic wrap and set aside at room temperature to rise for 1 ½ to 2 hours. Dough should double in size. • Bake - Oil baking sheet and stretch dough so it reaches all four corners. Cover dough with towel for 30 minutes. Using the tips of your fingers, create indentions in dough. Drizzle extra virgin olive oil over top of dough (don’t be shy!), salt (to taste) and sage. Bake in oven at 450°F for 30 minutes.

Care for a Sample? BEER FESTIVAL RETURNS TO GIG HARBOR

S

lippery Pig, Odd Otter and Fox Island are just a few of the brewers you’ll be able to sample from at one of Gig Harbor’s favorite annual events. Now in its seventh year, the Gig Harbor Beer Festival will be providing IPAs, Pales, Browns, experimental and more from local and regional brewers for a fun day of sampling and beer appreciation. This year’s event is Saturday, May 19, and you can find the festivities at the Uptown Gig Harbor Pavilion from noon to 5pm. As the unofficial kickoff to summer in the South Sound, festival organizers expect another enthusiastic sell-out crowd for this year’s event with more than 25 breweries— and a cider booth—on hand to pour some of the most delicious brews in the South Sound area and beyond. Besides the great selection of craft beers to sample, this year’s festival will also include live music, games and a slightly expanded event area, and Gig Harbor’s own Heritage Distillery will be on hand to pour their very popular mini cocktails. While there is not food for sale inside the festival, ticket

holders do have in-and-out privileges and are encouraged to grab a bite from one of the local area restaurants The Gig Harbor Beer Festival is a fundraiser event for the Gig Harbor Kiwanis. For more than 45 years, members of the Gig Harbor Kiwanis have raised funds and planned a variety of service projects that improve the lives of children, their families and the Gig Harbor community. This event has sold out for the past six years. Tickets are $30 at the door the day of the event. This gets you a 5-ounce cup and eight tokens for tasting. Since this event does sell out, everyone is encouraged to buy a ticket in advance at: BrownpaperTickets.com/event/3322110. You may also purchase paper tickets at Gig Harbor Brewing’s Tacoma taproom at 3120 S. Tacoma Way while supplies last.
