NOTE

Publisher’s

Holidays and Sacrifice. NOVEMBER. It marks the beginning of the holiday season. Many of us are already looking ahead to December, planning our Christmas get togethers and gift giving. It’s easy to do. After all, stores are already playing Christmas carols, stocking their shelves with items for the holidays, and getting everyone in the festive holiday mood. But it’s important too that we take the time to enjoy this very special month of November. It’s an important time to sit back, reflect and give thanks for the blessings in our lives. In addition to the Thanksgiving holiday, there’s also another day during the month that we set aside to give thanks - Veterans’ Day.

Where children can explore, create & learn!

While we carry on with our lives, blessed to live in not only a beautiful place, but also a safe place, there are those both overseas and at home who are sacrificing every day so that we may have the privileges and freedom that we in America experience. So as you find yourself getting caught up in the busy, festive holiday preparations, I encourage you to take time to not only reflect on your blessings but also the blessings granted to you by our armed forces. And if you see a veteran or a current member of our military, please extend a thank you. They’ve earned that and a lot more. Happy Thanksgiving to all of our readers, and from those of us at Living Local Magazines – a heartfelt Thank You to our military, both past and present. We create community! We connect people! We build trust!

NOVEMBER 7TH MARKS the fifty-fourth anniversary of the day when the first Narrows Bridge ‘galloped’ its way into international stardom. Galloping Gertie, as the bridge was affectionately dubbed, fell into the Puget Sound amid high winds. This issue remembers the original Narrows Bridge since it provided the first functional and architecturally beautiful path that connected the Peninsula to the South Sound.

Fish Food Bank

Getting by with a little help from our friends. Article and photos by Bianca Otero.

TIMES ARE GETTING ROUGHER for a large part of the U.S. population and the increasing need for assistance is becoming slightly alarming for many individuals and families. Many struggle to make it through the day with enough food and when hunger hits home, it’s always a relief to get helping hand. Living in Gig Harbor and experiencing its natural beauty is wonderful; but, behind closed doors and many times out of sight, there are an incredible percentage of people who are struggling. People’s needs range from food to clothing to paying monthly bills since even some of those who are employed struggle to keep afloat in their lives. The highest percentages of those in need are families with 1-2 children, people with disabilities, and the elderly whose living expenses exceed monthly social security allocations. Fortunately, many in our community have taken the attitude of paying forward. The Fish Food Bank, located just a stone’s throw away from downtown Gig Harbor has confronted these challenges each day since June 1976. Lead by Jan Coen, this non-profit has a staff of dedicated volunteers. Their modest office is filled with the expected slew of paperwork and buzz of teamwork. Their impressive volunteers, who in their previous lives were auditors, accountants, legal counsel, consultants or members of other professions, pour their time and expertise into the food bank, with the hope of creating a more certain future for Gig Harbor residents. Coen, who was born and raised in Gig Harbor, has always appreciated this area. In the midst of it all she realized that because of our strong sense of community in Gig Harbor, those those who live here had more to give. After all, whenever there is a call, there is an answer when like-minded people join together to make a difference. In the 1970s, the Fish volunteer movement, which originated in the UK, was gaining momentum. The awareness of neighbors in need in our community was something profound to Coen. She felt the age-old concept of helping one’s neighbor could be built upon. In this

spirit, Coen decided to answer the call of those in need. With only the basics of starting this NGO, Coen was assisted by the Fish organization and eventually opened an independent food bank in Gig Harbor, while remaining a cooperative with the other fourteen Fish Food Banks within the Puget Sound region. Their motto, Neighbor Helping Neighbor, is more important today than ever before. With families scattered and some communities being transitory, gone are the days when neighbors helped each other in a proactive way. Though no one is to blame for this social disintegration, it benefits everyone to be aware of others in our community. Fortunately, Fish Food Bank has literally ‘stepped up to the plate’ by becoming ever more expansive and holistic in their mission. Fish Food Bank assists those in need of food while also addressing broader needs; be it toys for children, or school supplies, to transportation and financial assistance when area families are experiencing a financial emergency. However, nutrition remains key to their work and there is a great focus on providing

quality food. Lower bracket incomes have a difficult time acquiring high nutrient food at a reasonable price. Mostly, because of lack time or lack of budget, lower income or “crisis” families are forced to resort to feeding their families fare with little or no nutritional value. Once again, Fish Food Bank has stepped up to address this issue. In agreement with the local Wilkinson Farm, the Fish Food Bank also donates fresh produce to those in need. Others, such as individuals with an abundance of veggies from their gardens also donate to Fish so that recipients are able to maintain a well-balanced diet. This is a win-win situation since it reduces waste while providing better food security. With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, we are afforded the opportunity step out of our fast-paced lives and to reflect on all for which we are grateful. In the spirit of the original pilgrims, we have the opportunity to fill our tables and the tables of those with the greatest need. While stocking our own pantries, we can take a moment to purchase items to restock the pantries and cupboards of others. However, giving of our time is equally valuable since community need is an ongoing issue. Fish Food Bank welcomes volunteers of all ages and skill levels. There are so many interesting activities for volunteers to be involved in. Even if your time commitment is limited, they welcome anyone who would like to support this lifechanging endeavor.

Their motto, Neighbor Helping Neighbor, is more important today than ever before.

Home&Essentials NASA-APPROVED AEROGARDEN

Year-round fresh, organically grown, and pest-free produce cultivated inside your home. By Sarah Polyakov.

MOST OF US are aware that in order to maintain optimal health, our bodies require multiple daily servings of fresh produce. Many people cultivate outdoor gardens during the summer and enjoy flavorful fresh lettuce, tomatoes, vegetables, and herbs. Outdoor gardens provide an opportunity for exercise as well as a feast for the senses. It is also great to have one’s own garden because it affords each person a sense of pride when they literally see the ‘fruits of their labor.’ However, during the winter, outdoor growing is not an option and those of us who love to garden miss being able to participate in this activity year-round. But, the good news is, today’s technology usually has an answer to everything, even gardening. With an indoor growing system called AeroGarden, cultivating freshly grown produce all year long becomes an option for everyone. This high tech gadget, which is so small it can find a home on your kitchen counter, uses a scientific approach to indoor gardening. It is able to grow up to six different plants at once while maintaining a clean, insectfree garden. This system allows hobby gardeners and master gardeners alike to participate in their favorite activity even when the temperature outside drops below freezing. One of the major benefits of the AeroGarden is the seed pods that are sold with it. These seeds, which are easy to use, are not genetically modified. AeroGarden seed pods include: various types of lettuce and tomatoes, hundreds of flavorful herbs, strawberries, cabbages, hot and mild

peppers, and finally many different types of flowers. In addition to that, they are able to produce around five months of healthful, flavorful, fresh food that grows at a vigorous rate. Aeorgarden can be likened to having your very own farmer’s market in your kitchen. The garden is also clean and easy to maintain since the roots of the plants are suspended in air while a water reservoir provides optimal conditions for growth. The hardy plants that are produced in the AeroGarden grow up to five times faster than plants grown with a more traditional approach. Another great feature of the produce grown in the AeroGarden is that it naturally contains high levels of nutrients. Since nutrient leaching out of soil has been getting worse over decades, this is a boon for health. According to AeroGarden testing, lettuce grown in the AeroGarden has almost three hundred times more Vitamin C than lettuce grown outside of the AeroGarden. Still this type of indoor garden is not meant to entirely replace the produce found in your local grocery stores. Because of its compact size, the AeroGarden uses very little energy and that is good news for your electric bills. This technology has also been NASA-tested and approved. But, the best part is, using the AeroGarden is easy and it can produce fresh food for even those who do not have a green thumb. I invite you to look into home growing systems so that you too can improve your health by having your own miniature year-round farmer’s market in your kitchen.

REECE IS A BUSY, working mom. She often finds that her days are maxed out and her time is limited. Like many of us, she feels that it is nearly impossible to keep her house clean and organized. “I think I have too many priorities and too little time - just like everyone else,” she shares. “I begin projects but then stop to run a carpool, become easily distracted, and start something else.” If you find yourself in the same situation as Reece, then preparing for the holidays can seem even more daunting. Fortunately, there are things you can do to make your holidays manageable and enjoyable.

• Purchase perishable items for Thanksgiving. Begin cooking one day ahead so you can enjoy the big day! November 29 – December 5 • Take down November’s decorations and put up December’s. Purge as you go! Make room for winter weather apparel, especially boots by the front door. • Finish shopping for gifts that need to be shipped, write and mail holiday cards, and start wrapping gifts. • Check that all outdoor lighting is functioning for safety.

For example, you can create a checklist of tasks for the next eight weeks. Make sure your checklist is manageable and realistic so that you aren’t overwhelmed (no need to be Martha Stewart!).

December 6 – 12 • Finish shipping gifts, buy your live tree and finish your decorating.

Avoid the rush and stress of the season by using this Holiday Checklist as a guide. Pick and choose the tasks important to you, and you’ll be sailing through the holidays and truly enjoying time with loved ones.

• Prepare for guests, clear dresser space and make sure they’ll be comfortable.

November 1 – 7 • Book in advance for housekeeping, carpet cleaning, family photo session and holiday lights installation. • Make plans for Thanksgiving dinner, create a menu, and begin to form your holiday shopping budget. November 8 – 14 • Finish Thanksgiving decorations, buy non-perishables for Thanksgiving dinner, and start baking items you can freeze. • Update your holiday card list, and begin gathering wrapping and shipping supplies. • Formalize plans for overnight guests.

GigHarborHomeManagement.com

November 22 – 28 • Narrow down gift ideas and make plans for Black Friday.

November 15 – 21 • Start shopping for gifts, inventory holiday decorations and make additional purchases, and make a final Thanksgiving “to-do” list.

18   Gig Harbor Living Local | www.GoGigHarbor.com

• Finalize your menus, order turkey or ham, and take stock of your dishes and glasses.

December 13 – 19 • Finish holiday baking, and purchase non-perishable food items. • Ensure your sidewalks and porches are regularly cleared of ice. December 20 – 26 • Deep clean your home for guests. • Buy extra batteries for children’s toys and electronics, and fresh meal ingredients. • Make time for yourself and your loved ones before the season disappears: ask your family for ideas on how to create a new tradition. Two days before Christmas: • Start cooking and finish stocking stuffers. One day before Christmas: • Charge camera batteries and make timelines for Christmas Day schedules.

REMODEL OR NEW CONSTRUCTION? Find help just a few clicks away. By Patty Hutchens & Annie Nye, Interior Designer. Photo courtesy Choice Construction. WHETHER YOU ARE a homeowner, a home design enthusiast, a contractor, or a home improvement professional, there are thousands of ideas to fill our minds with redecorating tips or building that dream home. The reality is, it can become overwhelming. But planning ahead and finding the right professionals to assist you in that journey can be the key factor between success and disaster. That’s where Houzz.com comes into play. Houzz.com provides consumers access to home construction, remodel, and design professionals in their local area and beyond. It educates the consumer by providing information so that they can locate and hire the most qualified and respected professionals who will assist them in turning their vision into a reality. The website allows consumers to not only identify top-rated professionals, but also those whose work may match the consumer’s own objectives for their home improvement project. Houzz. com also provides homeowners access to professionals via the Houzz platform, giving them a place to inquire about their work and reviewing responses professionals have provided to others in the Houzz community. In addition to providing information on area professionals, Houzz.com also provides the consumer with literally millions of photos for design ideas and over

three million curated products. Some tips to remember when planning a home improvement project include first and foremost the necessity of formulating a plan. Planning ahead is one of the key factors to making a remodel project successful. Pushing to try to make things happen faster only leads to disappointment. The second thing to consider is how many choices are out there. First, try to provide contrast in the room. Whether it’s a bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room, the cabinets should contrast the countertops and the flooring. If you have dark cabinetry and trim throughout your house, going with a lighter countertop will provide the contrast needed. If you have light wood flooring, you should go with a shade darker cabinets. This prevents the room from falling into the blah zone and still allows your tones to be neutral, yet looks purposeful. Also, keeping things neutral allows you to add pop of color through towels, vases, artwork, dishes, and more. And these are things that if you decide you want to change out in a few years, you won’t feel bad putting them in a yard sale and starting over. Knowing you have hired the right professional will provide you with the peace of mind that your project will not only meet your expectations, but will go beyond it as well.

INTELLIGENT INVESTING Battle those low rates with three types of income. Article for use by Edward Jones financial advisor Erin Abrigo of Gig Harbor.

The Federal Reserve has stated that it plans to keep short-term rates at their current historic lows until at least mid-2015.

IF YOU DEPEND on fixed-income investments for at least part of your income, you probably haven’t been too happy in recent years, as interest rates have hit historic lows. Nonetheless, even in a low-rate environment, you can broaden the income-producing potential of your investment portfolio. However, before taking action, it’s helpful to know what the near-term direction of interest rates may look like. The Federal Reserve has stated that it plans to keep short-term rates at their current historic lows until at least mid-2015. The Fed doesn’t control long-term rates, making them somewhat less predictable, but it’s still likely that these rates will rise sooner than shortterm ones. In any case, rather than worry about something you can’t control – that is, interest rate movements – try to focus on those things you can accomplish. And one achievable goal is to create an investment mix that includes three types of income: variable, reliable and

rising. • Variable income investments Some variable income investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), offer significant protection of principal, and the value of your investment won’t change with fluctuating interest rates, provided you hold your CD until maturity. Of course, current rates are quite low, which means CDs provide you with little income today, but their rates have the potential to rise along with short-term interest rates. • Reliable income investments When you purchase reliable income investments, which can include individual bonds, you have the opportunity to earn more income today, and more consistent income over time, than you’d typically get from variable income investments. However, you will likely also experience greater price fluctuations as interest rates change.

Specifically, as interest rates rise, the price of your existing bonds typically will fall. • Rising income investments When investing for income, you’ll want to keep at least one eye on inflation – because if the interest rates paid on your CDs and individual bonds are lower than the annual inflation rate, you may lose purchasing power. If this gap persists over time, it could grow into a real problem for you. Consequently, you’ll want at least some of your investment income to come from rising income investments, such as dividend-paying stocks. Of course, not all stocks pay dividends, but with the help of your financial advisor, you can find companies that have paid – and even increased – their dividends for many years running. And if you don’t actually need the dividends to supplement your cash

flow, you can reinvest them to build your ownership stake in these stocks. Keep in mind, though, that companies can reduce or discontinue dividends at any time. Also, remember that stock prices will constantly rise and fall, so the value of your principal could decline. As you can see, all three types of incomeproducing investments – variable, reliable and rising – offer some benefits, along with some risks of which you need to be aware. But putting together a mix of these investments that’s appropriate for your individual needs, goals and risk tolerance may help you boost the productivity of the “income” portion of your portfolio – no matter what’s happening with interest rates.

At Edward Jones, our business is helping people find solutions for their long-term financial goals. Let’s work together to design and implement an investment strategy that suits your needs.

FAMILY TRUST BASICS

One option for protecting family assets. By Richard Patrick, J.D.

IN THIS DISCUSSION, a “Trustee” means any person that holds property, or a position of trust for the benefit of another, including themselves. The most common family trust is one where the parents (Grantors) form a trust, naming themselves as “Trustees.” In that context: The purpose in establishing a living trust is: to avoid probate; to preserve the federal unified credit, allowing the trustees to pass approximately $2 million to beneficiaries free of federal estate tax; to provide for the

It is very important that the trustees hold title to trust assets as trustees of their trust, rather than as individuals. trustees during their lifetimes; to manage trust assets should either or both trustees be unable to do so; and finally to provide for the distribution of the trust property upon the death of the trustees. It is very important that the trustees hold title to trust assets as trustees of their trust, rather than as individuals. Failure to re-title your assets may cause the need for probate. All assets of the trust are listed on a “schedule.” Keep your schedules up to date as the trust acquires or disposes of assets.

There are a number of situations that can arise where assets are not in the trust at the time of incapacitation or death. There are too many to list here. The best result is obtained by transferring and keeping all of your property in trust. The specific and technical language of the trust determines the management and transfer of trust assets. In a typical family trust, the Grantors give their own personal property to the trustees (themselves), to manage for themselves! The trustee(s) manage the assets of the trust for their benefit and to provide for their support in their accustomed manner of living. When one trustee passes away, the surviving trustee pays any debts, funeral expenses, and taxes for the one that dies first. Sometimes, after the first trustee passes away, assets of the trust are distributed between the surviving trustee and other beneficiaries, but not always. When the surviving trustee passes away, the “alternate” trustee pays any debts, funeral expenses, and taxes for the last one to die. The alternate trustee is then directed to distribute all of the remaining trust property as the surviving trustee directed. Naturally, the trustees will not list every item of personal property that they may own in the schedules, and those items can be distributed to the beneficiaries as directed by the last

original trustee. There are many “sub” trusts that can be created inside the living trust. Some of these are Credit Shelter Trusts, Marital Trusts, and Minors Trusts, all with their unique purpose and procedure. The original Trustees may reserve the power to make changes or revoke the trust, or they may specifically declare the trust to be irrevocable. There are many valid reasons to contemplate these provision. Any change to the trust or revocation of the trust must be made in writing. Generally, the greater the financial assets you have, the more a trust might be a good idea for you. Bridging the Gaps

Fifty-four years since the famous aeroelastic flutter that made the first Narrows Bridge a legend. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos courtesy Harbor History Museum & Sarah Polyakov.

ON NOVEMBER 7TH, 1940, the first Narrows Bridge made history as it put on quite a show by galloping and bucking before plunging into the cold waters of Puget Sound. The first Narrows Bridge was affectionately named Galloping Gertie for wavelike motion that occurred during 40-mile-per-hour winds that day, which caused the bridge to shake itself free of its pillars. Though most of us are familiar with this event that made the news around the world, we are not familiar with why or how the first Narrows Bridge came to be. In the 1920’s, there were growing settlements on the Peninsula, and business in Tacoma was booming. Increasingly, there became a need to ‘bridge the gap’ between Tacoma and Gig Harbor. Prior to the Narrows Bridge, if one had wanted to travel from Tacoma to Gig Harbor by car, they would have had to travel over 100 miles. Otherwise, the only alternative was a ferry. Even though the need for a way to access the Peninsula by car was clear, building a bridge across the Narrows was not easy. First Attempt In 1928, noted bridge architect David B. Steinman of New York City was hired to conduct surveys and complete architectural sketches. In 1929, the state legislature passed a law authorizing a bridge across the narrows and the first sketches by Steinman were made public.

Second Attempt With the first attempt having failed, the second set of designs aptly came from the Tacoma city engineers. They smartly proposed a truss bridge that would carry trains, cars, and pedestrians. Still, because of many extenuating factors, this effort did not come to fruition. Third Attempt In 1936, Franklin Roosevelt put “the New Deal” into action. It was determined that the bridge would be paid for in part by a Public Works Agency grant while the rest of the funds would be acquired by Pierce County public utility bonds. In 1936, Moran and Proctor presented plans for a suspension bridge that would cost $4,089,091. Though it had seemed the third attempt at the new bridge would be funded, economic security was at an alltime low and the plan to build a bridge once again was put on hold. Fourth Attempt With World War II in full swing, protecting the United States became a necessity. Domestic security became the main driver behind getting a bridge built since it was necessary to link the naval base in Bremerton to McChord air force base. The terms for funding a bridge changed again. Under the new terms, funds would be released if the bridge contract was awarded to Leon Moisseiff, a well-known engineer in New York City. So it was that Moisseiff was hired to design the towers and cables. After the Washington State Highway Department’s engineers reviewed his plans, the plans were rightfully met with extreme skepticism. Moisseiff ’s design proposed a bridge that was lighter and narrower than any bridge built at that time. Regardless, a new bridge had to be built and on November 23, 1938, construction began on the first Narrows Bridge. Grand Opening On July 1st, 1940, around 7,000 people came to watch Governor Clarence D. Martin perform the ribbon cutting ceremony for the bridge and to witness the 19-gun salute by National Guard soldiers. The crowd viewed this new engineering feat with awe since at that time it was the third longest suspension bridge in the world.

COMMUNITY Thus it was that on the morning of November 7th, the first Narrows Bridge shook and galloped its way into the history books due to 42 mile per hour winds.

The first Narrows Bridge was built to withstand winds of 120 mph. But soon everyone driving on the bridge found that winds traveling around 3 to 4 miles an hour could cause the bridge to ripple and to form waves. What was even more worrisome was that the speed of the wind did not determine the size of the ripples on the bridge. Soon enough, the bridge waves attracted thrill seekers, and they used it for personal amusement since the movement of the bridge was like a rollercoaster ride. Galloping Her Way Into History Thus it was that on the morning of November 7th, the first Narrows Bridge shook and galloped its way into the history books due to forty-two mile-per-hour winds. The collapse of the bridge was due to aeroelastic flutter, compounded by the bridge design, which did not allow for winds to pass through the bridge deck. The remains of the first Narrows Bridge, submerged in about 200 feet of water, now form one of the largest man-made reefs. Fortunately, no human lives were lost during this spectacular event. A black cocker spaniel named Tubby, who was determined to stay with his owner’s car to the end, was the only fatality. After all, even a falling bridge is no match for a dog’s loyalty. A special thanks to Harbor History Museum for providing historical photos for use. Historical photos may also be purchased at HHM by the general public.

Elite Exteriors Renovation, exterior design, customer service, and homeowner advocacy. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos by John Ramsdell.

WHEN ONE CONSIDERS improving the exterior of one’s homes, finding a quality-minded contractor who possesses old-fashioned work ethic is key. John Ramsdell, the owner of Elite Exteriors is one such contractor. He will soon be starting his fifteenth job located on the same street as prior clients! Raised with a strong work ethic, John was taught that one must do his absolute best whatever the task. This attitude, he reiterates is exactly what it takes to succeed. Additionally, giving back to homeowner clients and to our community is equally important to him. Elite Exteriors, a certified green builder, began in 1998 when John realized the industry standard for covering old siding was not effective. Simply covering old siding also meant encasing any wood rot and mold present in the walls. Coupled with years of experience in construction, John decided to focus exclusively on home exteriors. John’s associates refer to him as a “home owner’s advocate” because he doesn’t just get the job done, he educates homeowners while completing jobs with the most quality materials. John reiterates, “I don’t do what everyone else does, I do for others what I would do for myself.” John is also distinguished by lending his expertise to 97.3 KIRO’s “Home Matters”. As a renowned guest on the show each quarter, John shares his own best practices with listeners. John also trains home inspectors and real estate agents how to spot water infiltration. Since water damage is such a problem, John uses thermal imaging technology to pinpoint water damage. Elite Exteriors is the exclusive dealer for CHIC Advanced Coating, which can be used to provide a lifetime, waterproof solution to a home exterior. CHIC is approved by the American Institute of Architects for envelope waterproofing.

John, who is a member of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce, takes pride in going the extra mile. Bringing integrity to each job, he notes, “I believe that the Lord has me in this business and in turn leads me to the people I need to help. Helping others in this way gives me great satisfaction.”

Elite Exteriors offers the following services: siding, windows, roofing, painting, lifetime coating, new decks and deck refurbishment, concrete, fences, exterior architectural updates, and garages. Elite Exteriors is lead certified and only works with installers who have been with the company for many, many years, and are all highly experienced and masters at their craft. This allows each homeowner peace of mind as well as a more affordable price for services. John and his wife Suzi also support local organizations, churches, and charities. His belief in giving back is important to him and he notes, “Whenever I run into someone who is in need, that is when I know I am supposed to give.” Taken together, these items make Elite Exteriors different. Each job that they complete includes client education, quality, and of course finding creative ways to give back. John and Suzi look forward to hearing about your next project and welcome questions. Be sure to look for them at local home shows in Tacoma, Kitsap County, and Seattle. Elite Exteriors is a member of Kitsap Home Builders Association, the National Association of Home Builders, Crane Performance Contractor, and has received both the Royal Gold Crown and the Alcoa (Mastic) Golden Hammer for builder professionalism. Customer Testimonial: “Elite Exteriors, owned by John and Susie Ramsdell stands for quality, integrity and honesty. John listened carefully to what I wanted, was very knowledgeable in his advice, was honest to the end, and followed through with a job done with expert craftsmanship and attention to detail. The amazing part was when he found some extensive hidden damage and called to say that he would fix it with his own materials in order to keep my original, very reasonable, contracted price.” —Nancy del Plain

DECKING THE HALLS. Get some amazing finds at Winterfest 2014. By Mike Trittin. Photos courtesy of Sandra Malich. IT’S THAT TIME of year again! The air is cool and crisp and our town is beginning to echo with hearty laughter and crackling fires. The uplifting holiday spirit is in full swing in our community and smiles and nods from others abound. The Holidays are here and along with them comes a longstanding Gig Harbor tradition: Peninsula High School’s Winterfest. This celebration, which occurs every Thanksgiving weekend, is a perfect way for you and your family to get into the Holiday spirit, but there’s also a deeper spirit behind it. I had a chance to sit down with the event coordinator, Sandi Malich and her heart for the students and the school was more than a little inspiring. After all, she has been the brains behind Winterfest for nineteen years! When I asked why she continues to coordinate Winterfest year after year, her short answer said it all: “I believe in the school.”

EVENT

Girls Night Out Holiday fun for you and your BFFs. By Sarah Polyakov. Photo courtesy Downtown Waterfront Alliance. IT’S TIME TO START holiday shopping and what better way to get a jump-start? Bring your BFF and join in the fun at the Downtown Waterfront Alliance’s 5th Annual Girls Night Out. On Thursday, Nov 13th, browse area stores, buy holiday gifts, grab a bite to eat, and shop area businesses from noon until nine.

It is evident that Sandi loves Peninsula High School and she loves helping its students even more. With heart-felt appreciation, Sandi notes, “These are such great kids.” But what is most amazing, as she explains, is that the high school students put on this event for our community each year. This is a tremendous task and no easy undertaking. Yet, the students are the ones doing the bulk of the work: setting up, helping vendors load and unload, decorating, and even getting the word out. This student-run event is a great example of the talent and hard work that is behind this event. Even though it’s a long weekend, Sandi assures us that everyone involved knows that Winterfest is worth it.

Be sure to snag your Goodie Bag. Each bag costs only $10 and can be purchased from downtown businesses that display the sign “Buy Your Goodie Bag Here”. Or, take a peek at the Girl’s Night Out Facebook page for a complete listing of area businesses.

So what is Winterfest? Put simply, it is a celebration of handcrafted items that is held in both the commons and the gymnasium. Here, they give a whole new meaning to “Deck the Halls” since the highlight of this event is comprised of many different custom wreaths hung in the hallways. You’ll find arts and crafts from over 200 vendors, foods for sampling, and of course, the “Hall of Wreaths Silent Auction.” All items are handmade by the vendors. Also, various community organizations as well as food vendors are present to ensure maximum enjoyment for participants.

Be sure to join the 40+ area businesses who participate in Girls Night Out for an evening of fun, refreshments, entertainment, and door prizes. Girl’s Night Out on the Gig Harbor Waterfront is presented by the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance and sponsored by local businesses.

Sure, Winterfest is a great way to start your Holiday shopping – but, it’s also a great way to give back to your Gig Harbor community. The proceeds from Winterfest go directly to the Peninsula High School Associated Student Body (ASB). Winterfest raises funds for student activities. With rising costs for athletics, clubs, and other student organizations, Winterfest helps shoulder the financial burden from various organizations. School activities can be pricey, yes, but they are worth every penny. So come, spend generously, and have a blast while acquiring some local handmade goods and sampling tasty treats supplied by food vendors. Be sure you make it to Winterfest this year to get a jumpstart on your holiday shopping, all while benefitting the students who work so hard and give up their long weekends to be a part of this community event. Bring the whole family... Tis’ the season! Hayden Smith

PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL. BY MERIDITH HATCH. WHETHER ON THE TRACK or on the football field, eighteen-year-old Peninsula High School senior Hayden Smith is determined to always bring his best. Known for his great sense of humor and big smile, Hayden has played football all four years at Peninsula (PHS), playing offense and defensive line. He is a team captain this year.

DON’T GIVE UP

“Football is my favorite sport because I get to work as part of a team,” Hayden says. “There’s no stronger bond than with your brothers on the football field.” Going on his fourth year in track, Hayden throws discus and shot put, and is learning to throw the hammer. Hayden went to the State Championships last year for the discus. He recalls how seeing all the great athletes at State was a highlight of his athletic career. When asked about his greatest challenge, Hayden explains that managing his time is not easy. With football five to six days a week and homework from his AP classes, it is tough to get it all done and have a social life. “It takes a lot of hard work and determination to get through the day sometimes,” Hayden says. “I have learned that when it gets tough, don’t give up. Put your head down and push through it and get to the other side.”

“I have learned that when it gets tough, don’t give up. Put your head down and push through it and get to the other side.” Hayden is equally inspired by one of his teachers at Peninsula High School. Hayden thoughtfully notes, “My favorite teacher is Mr. Mclean, because he is always willing to stay after school and help students. He’s just a really good teacher.” Hayden enjoys math and maintains a 3.75 GPA while active in two sports and taking AP classes. Hayden will attend college next year, and has received letters of interest for track from multiple colleges. While he has not yet made his final decision and is keeping his options open, he would prefer to stay in state. Hayden is interested in pursuing a career in the medical field because he enjoys helping people.

One way Hayden helps others is through the Hope on the Slopes fundraising program at White Pass, benefiting the American Cancer Society. Hayden has been involved with this 24 hour skiing fundraiser for seven years, first on his brother’s team, then captaining his own team when he was old enough; together they have raised thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society. For the last three years, Hayden has placed first for individual vertical skier, racking up 105,000 vertical miles within 24 hours last year and 137,000 vertical miles the year before.

GIG HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL. BY MERIDITH HATCH.

PHOTOS BY KAREN WILLENBROCK. “ONE THING MY [WATER POLO] coach always tells our team is how important it is to give our best effort every day; whether it be at a practice or at a game,” says 17-yearold Gig Harbor High School senior Jacob Willenbrock. Involved in sports throughout his entire high school career, his first year Jacob threw the javelin for track and was the kicker for the freshman football team. Jacob planned to continue in football until a serious back injury early in his sophomore year left him looking forward to a prolonged recovery. Jacob’s parents encouraged him to join the swim team team to help with his rehab, though he told them he wouldn’t do it because he didn’t want to wear a speedo. “They signed me up for swimming and I told them that I didn’t want to even try, but looking back it was one of the nicest things they have done for me. I got into water polo through swimming. I thank the Lord everyday for using my injury to bless me. I relied a lot on my faith during the time I was injured, and that has made me very mentally, physically and spiritually strong. If I had not been injured, I would

never have found the sport that I Iove to play.” Jacob recalls a championship game against Puyallup at the Auburn regional tournament, in the beginning of this year’s season, as being a highlight of his athletic career. “I remember after the whistle blew and we began to sprint, I made the first goal of the game. I remember watching the shot go in with the adrenaline pumping through my body; it felt like time was standing still,” he said. Jacob explained how coming off a winless season his junior year, taking second in the competition was satisfying, and how he was filled with pride for the hard work both he and the team put in over the prior nine months. “A year ago everyone on my team, including myself, had never picked up a water polo ball, and now our team is seeded second in the league and has a solid chance to make it to the state tournament,” Jacob says. “By overcoming my injury, I have learned that if I put my effort into something and try my very best, I will succeed.”

Jacob loves to fuel up on his favorite foods which consist of “a good medium-well steak and pierogies.” He attributes much of his success to his teachers as well, giving each of them credit in contributing to his success. Jacob notes, “I don’t have a certain favorite, but would like to thank all the teachers who have given their best effort to equip me with the knowledge that I will need to succeed in the future.”

Emerald Yachts The new alternative for buying or selling a yacht in the South Puget Sound. By Bianca Otero. SCOTT ALPRIN STARTED HIS BROKERAGE business to offer the local boating community a new alternative- an individualized and personalized after-sale service. Scott and his wife Marina live in Gig Harbor and have been active in both the Gig Harbor and Roche Harbor Yacht Clubs and the South Sound boating community. After 20 years working in “Corporate America” Scott moved to Raft Island in Gig Harbor in 2003 and purchased a yacht from a local yacht brokerage. Disappointed with the purchasing procedure with both the broker and owner of the company, he opened Emerald Yachts in 2005, with a desire to offer something “extra” that he believed other local brokerages were not providing. Instead of focusing on just the sale, his brokerage team is committed to every aspect of the transaction from beginning, during and after the sale. Emerald Yachts works with each client who buys a boat or yacht and provide a full day demonstration on how to run their new boat, familiarizing and learning how to work and maintain the systems and even instructing them how to park in their new slip. “It is the most exciting and rewarding part of our job”. Emerald Yachts is currently the only South Sound yacht brokerage that offers full “on water” training for their clients. They are thrilled to spend a full day with each new boat owner to prepare them with knowledge, hands on demonstrations, and thorough explanations on how everything works on their boat! The day’s training activities include: navigation and operating during restricted visibility situations, nautical rules and regulations, Puget Sound boating and safety rules, emergency procedures, VHF communications, mechanical systems and running instructions, fueling, docking and casting off, maneuvering inside a marina, anchoring, and emergency management.

They are thrilled to spend a full day with each new boat owner to prepare them with knowledge, hands on demonstrations, and thorough explanations on how everything works on their boat!

“Everyone who purchases a yacht has different experiences. Sometimes we are the teachers and sometimes we get taught. However, no matter the experience of our clients, part of Emerald Yachts’ job is to make sure our clients understand all the operations of their new yacht.” Local boat owners who want to sell their vessel get the full attention from Scott and his team who maintain professional relationships with over 500 Northwest and West Coast yacht brokerage firms and have visibility on multiple yacht industry websites, all of which help to find prospective buyers for their yachts. They also have had great success for larger yacht clients allowing them to list and sell their yachts locally without having to take the long and laborious trip to Lake Union, which historically was the only option for most sellers. However, that has dramatically changed since Emerald Yachts began networking and marketing locally, regionally, and internationally from their waterfront offices in Gig Harbor. Everyone who works for the brokerage has a passion for boating, and boating knowledge is an integral part of their success. Another key component of their success is they recruit and hire people of integrity who have done well in other industries. They don’t look for salespeople, instead they look for people who have extensive boating experience and who are team minded and willing to commit to superior customer service and client care. “It is a tough challenge, but extremely rewarding when we find the right people to join our team.”

Turkey Trot

RICHARD SHINDELL IN CONCERT

A time for running and a time for giving. By Bianca Otero. SPEND THE MORNING of Thanksgiving and run off those inevitable calories that you will consume later Thanksgiving Day. Timothy Holmes is behind the Turkey Trot in Gig Harbor, which has gained quite a following. Eleven years ago he realized it was time to get fit and has become an avid promoter of healthy living. He was the person who pioneered this event and brought the Turkey Trot to our community. Credit could be given to Holmes’ son as the initiator of this event, since that was the year he challenged his father to a marathon. Holmes was motivated by the marathon to bring this Thanksgiving race to Gig Harbor. The Turkey Trot, which is a drive to be healthy on Thanksgiving Day, is also generated by the inspiration to help people. A race that started with fifteen people and thirty two cans of food has become a full-fledged canned food drive and running event. Today, this event exceeds 2000 participants. Registration includes donating food, clothes, and money for the people in Gig Harbor who

are in need during the holiday season. All donations go to the Fish Food Bank and and Peninsula Lutheran Communities of Faith while the monetary proceeds are given to scholarships in our community. Runners and walkers may choose to run or walk the 5k or 10k. The great thing about this event is that it is for all fitness levels and everyone can participate. The start of the race is located at the Gig Harbor post office on 3118 Judson Street. Donation receptacles and trucks will be on site to take donations in the parking lot area. All participants are encouraged to register for the race before race day. Registration on the day of the race is permitted and starts at 6:30am. Please visit the Turkey Trot website for registration fees and more details. Turkey Trot Thursday, November 27th 8-10am www.holmeschiropractic.net/turkey-trot

The Next Big Thing Gig Harbor regional center for the arts. By Julianna Verboort. ON A FOGGY MORNING at a harborside cafe, I joined four civic-minded Gig Harbor Arts Center Alliance board members to learn about Gig Harbor’s “next big thing.” As we settle in, I am awed with descriptions of the proposed arts center. The plan is to construct a beautiful and sustainably designed 88,000 square foot indoor-outdoor campus for participating in the arts and community events. The Gig Harbor Regional Center for the Arts is a proposed dedicated arts campus with flexible, multi-functional performance venues, classrooms, studios and equipment for a wide range of visual, performing, and literary arts, serving Gig Harbor, Key Peninsula, Bremerton, Port Orchard, Tacoma and beyond. The center would make so many cultural events possible right in our own neighborhood. Imagine the thrill of taking a glass blowing class or watching a renowned ballet company; the fun of listening to beat poets while sipping coffee, or seeing friends perform their own theater production. But, that is not all—also planned are opportunities for shopping at an indoor-outdoor trunk sale for wearable art designed by regional artisans; space for holding a large fundraising auction for your favorite cause with a full service kitchen for caterers; filmmaking camps, science-pub lectures, writer’s workshops and so much more - right here in our community! The initiative is spearheaded by Gig Harbor Arts Center Alliance (GHACA), a 501(c)3 organization established by local civic leaders and with a Board

of Directors. GHACA is currently building support. High caliber, credible organizations -- from Peabody award winners to Gig Harbor Peninsula Symphony Orchestra, Peninsula School District, Tacoma Community College, YMCA, and PenMet Parks, Paradise Theatre, Hands On Art and more -- are all working in partnership with GHACA.

GHACA identified a suitable site across from Tom Taylor YMCA. The site already has the necessary infrastructure for water, sewer, power, traffic and parking. A church that is willing to negotiate a property transfer in return for a long-term lease for Church services owns over half of the 11-acre parcel. The site would essentially come at no cost.

Jonathan Bill has twenty-plus years of experience teaching performance arts and manages the auditorium at Peninsula High School; Mark Hoppen was City Administrator from 1992 to 2006, and is a Rotary chairperson; Anne Moore Knapp teaches art to young people and has held leadership roles in Peninsula Arts League, which has more than 250 members; Merrie Reardon taught in Peninsula School District for more than two decades and now runs a regional orchestra. Even though the Gig Harbor City Council passed a resolution of support, the city has neither committed funds, nor will be held responsible for potential liability for the Arts Center, it’s governance, or it’s programs.

The idea behind the arts center is to literally have something for everyone. The plans include a performance hall with tiered seating for 1,250, stage with fly loft, orchestra pit, control room for sound and lighting. Also included are the following: a community theatre, black box theater, outdoor amphitheater, and finally a box office, and lobby with concessions.

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of groups who could benefit from a state-of-the-art facility to create, teach, and engage people with the arts. It provides a single destination for people to learn about the depth and breadth of art in our region. It would offer ongoing benefits to those who live and visit here, and support the long-term viability of the arts industry and regional economy. It elevates Gig Harbor’s status as a desirable place to live.

There will also be space allocated for a multipurpose events hall. Tall windows that let in lots of light will surround this space. A commercial kitchen will be available to service events. For those interested in media arts, there will be a broadcast studio that includes a production studio, control room, and storage. There will also be a filmmaking studio complete with editing lab, and equipment/prop storage room. Finally, a recording studio containing control and mixing labs will make this space suitable for producing professional films. Finally, the arts center will provide a multitude of opportunities for visual artists. In this area of the arts center, there will be a multi-purpose classroom that includes sewing machines and workspace, an arts exhibition gallery, plus additional informal

The idea behind the arts center is to literally have something for everyone. exhibition space. A dry studio for painting, drawing, fiber arts, spinning as well as a wet studio for stone, clay, ceramics, wood, metal, fiberglass, plaster, and fiber will appeal to those working in the fine arts. Artists in residence will be welcome and space will be made available to them. A photography studio, which will include a dark room and a digital media lab will provide opportunities for local photographers. Finally, a hot arts facility will be available to those who work with glass, bronze, welding and metalwork. Community members will be able to watch artists work via a viewing area or stroll through a sculpture garden. Other features include a literary studio, children’s studio, cafe, reception,

administrative offices, restrooms, recycling center, custodial spaces, mechanical/ electrical and IT spaces, loading dock, and a beautiful water filtration site in the form of a nature trail with interpretive signage. BLRB Architects provided pro-bono preliminary design services resulting in a plan and renderings. BLRB led roundtables with arts organizations and interested parties to define what facilities and capacities were needed, and worked their magic on the design. GHACA is writing an RFP for a feasibility study to assess community-wide potential for job creation, sales, property tax implications, and other aspects of the project to determine if the proposed Arts Center can financially sustain itself. But even the feasibility study will cost something and the current estimate is that it will take approximately $50,000 to complete. Stay tuned for a very special opportunity to attend a fundraising gala that will support the feasibility study and complete a major step toward getting this project going. With eleven acres, more than 88,000 square feet, and a proposed cost of around $30 million to build, how can we all get involved in this grand vision? www.gigharborartscenter.org

The frenzy starts before the turkey’s cold - we’re thinking about which big box store we’re going to stake out for the best deals on Black Friday. Or will we wait for the online specials on Cyber Monday? Here’s a thought – how about neither? In the event you’re ready to jump off the hamster-wheel that the Christmas holidays have become, here are few suggestions that keep you in the spirit of giving without turning you into a total Scrooge: Why not give Small Business Saturday a go? November 29th is officially the day around the country where local shoppers are encouraged to support local small businesses for their holiday shopping. When you buy jewelry or a bike from the local store, you help support your neighbors and the local economy instead of sending the buck on to a massive company somewhere else. While you’re shopping local, consider also looking for fair trade products. By choosing fair trade products you’ll be getting things that have been made from natural products and/or sold in a sustainable way by a farmer or craftsperson who will get a good price for his/her work instead of a big corporation. Examples of fair trade goods can be cotton, wood, wool, coffee, chocolate or certain types of jewelry. Ideas: FairTradeUSA.org or GlobalExchange.org. Toys for Tots – There are plenty of holiday gift giving programs like Toys for Tots where you can purchase a toy or a coat for a child in need right in your own community. You might find you come away feeling richer. Ideas: ToysforTots.org For the one on your list who already has everything, give them water or a goat. Water is so basic and so many in the world don’t have access to it. Make a donation in someone’s name to help give the gift of water – or food. You can give a goat! This one is great because it’s fun to tell your brother you got him a goat for Christmas. And the look on your sister-in-law’s face when you tell her she’s getting a chicken? Priceless. But seriously, for a family that relies on the basics like the milk of a goat or the wool of a sheep, that’s a pretty great gift. And you get the joy of providing a new opportunity for someone who really does need it. Ideas: CharityWater.org or Heifer.org. Peace on Earth, goodwill toward all – that’s what the Holidays are truly about.

Affecting Your Daily Life? Snoring isn’t sexy! Stop it! Have you been told you snore? Snoring isn’t normal. It affects your partner’s sleep as well as yours. Also, snoring can be a symptom of a more serious condition called sleep apnea. Treatment for snoring or sleep apnea could be as simple as sleeping with an oral appliance! Our oral appliances are so comfortable and unobtrusive that most patients adjust to them in days.

Unbound! Gentle therapy liberates breast cancer survivors. By Terri Rossi.

“I COULDN’T POUR a cup of coffee or brush my own hair. Getting dressed was an ordeal if there were buttons or zippers involved. I felt a profound sense of helplessness,” said Karen, a recent breast cancer survivor in Gig Harbor. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in females. One in eight women will be diagnosed with the disease in her lifetime. Many experience debilitating emotional, physiological and functional limitations as a result of breast cancer treatment. Fortunately, thousands of women have found Feldenkrais® therapy

to be an essential part of their recovery after breast cancer surgery, treatment and breast reconstruction. They got relief from posttreatment symptoms such as fatigue, poor circulation (lymphedema) & neuropathy, as well as help in restoring movement capabilities lost due to surgery. A recent study in the San Francisco bay area showed reduced pain, improved function and improved range of motion in the affected arm after five Feldenkrais lessons, designed specifically for breast cancer survivors. Lessons were based on the Unbound! series developed by Alice Brydges, a Feldenkrais practitioner who has been teaching classes for cancer survivors.

Since my session I've been "noticing shifts in my body.

Sessions are so gentle and relaxing it's amazing how much shifts and comes into alignment during and after each session. - Krista Rosemary - Kent, WA

"

Developed in Europe and brought to the US in the 1980’s, Feldenkrais lessons influence the brain and behavior through a learning process involving gentle movement exploration and directed attention. It’s quite different from other styles of bodywork. Whereas yoga stretches muscles and Pilates strengthens muscles, Feldenkrais helps the brain communicate better with the body so that everything works better together. A Feldenkrais lesson starts with comfortable easy movements that gradually evolve into greater range and complexity done on the floor, chair or therapy table. The Feldenkrais practitioner gives verbal directions and uses gentle hand pressure to move the client’s body in sequences that may mimic common things that are challenging for breast cancer survivors, for example, reaching for a plate in a cupboard, putting on a seat belt and vacuuming. Karen and other breast cancer survivors who have had Feldenkrais therapy have reported these positive results: • Greater comfort and ease in everyday activities • A greater sense of vitality and well-being

The American Cancer Society recommends movement therapy after breast cancer surgery, no matter what type of surgery you had, as well as exercise after radiation therapy. The following exercises, however, may be risky and NOT be right for everyone, which is why we’ve listed them here: • Swimming laps using strokes with arm movements. • Using resistance bands as you don’t know how much resistance is being generated. • Body weight exercises such as pull-ups and push-ups may put too much stress on the shoulders and arms. • Some yoga poses such as downward dog and inversions may put too much weight on the arms. • Elliptical/cross-training machines, tennis, and crosscountry skiing using the arm on the side of surgery.

The Value of Sleep

Poor sleep can cause weight gain as well as other health issues. By Dr. Rhonda Savage. RECENTLY, MULTIPLE studies have concluded that people with sleep apnea, a disorder linked to snoring, fatigue, and dangerous gaps in breathing at night is partly due to throat muscles collapsing. The shape of the mouth, the sinus, and the nasal airway may also play a role. Patients with sleep issues are more likely to have weight gain, high blood pressure, heart disease or stroke. Researchers believe this is due to the body lacking enough oxygen, a condition known as hypoxia or hypoxemia. Approximately 28 million North Americans suffer from sleep apnea, with many cases going undiagnosed. Most patients don’t mention sleep problems they experience unless their physician asks them. Patients with moderate to severe apnea often need continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. These appliances, however, can be uncomfortable or cause patients to feel claustrophobic. For others, they’re a hassle. The CPAP designs have improved over time, but it’s still, for most patients, a life-changing event. Medical insurances typically cover dental oral appliances because of the lack of compliance with patients wearing the CPAP. You need a proper diagnosis. Some patients also wear an oral appliance and use a CPAP, because the CPAP doesn’t stop the snoring. Snoring happens because when you relax and go to sleep, your whole body relaxes. The relaxation allows your tongue to fall to the back of your throat and vibrate against the tonsil area, your uvula and the roof of your mouth. Some of the symptoms of sleep apnea include but are not limited to: waking up tired or with a headache, weight gain or difficulty losing weight, feeling irritable

during waking hours, snoring, having difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, falling asleep while driving, chronic depression or other health issues that are not improving. Sleep is so important! Without sleep, your body cannot heal and your body chemistry and hormones become abnormal, which has been linked to weight gain. Anxiety, stress or insomnia can also cause lack of sleep. Another cause of sleep disturbance is lack of good sleep ‘hygiene’. We also recommend that you and your children not use the computer, or watch stimulating television, just before bedtime. Research shows brain waves in children who use their cell phone, the computer, or even play video games continue for 2-3 hours into the night, when the child should be sleeping soundly. Adults who surf the internet have sleep disturbance for up to one hour following use of the computer. Lack of sleep can also be associated with periodontal disease, which can impact the health of your teeth, gums and bone. Patients with sleep issues also may develop more cavities associated with dry mouth, since this can be a complication of snoring. Talk with your dentist and your physician about any sleep related issues, or if your spouse is keeping you awake at night due to snoring. Your health depends on good rest! Dr. Rhonda Savage is a local Gig Harbor dentist, a dental speaker, coach, and author. She is a past president of the Washington State Dental Association and an affiliate faculty at the UW School of Dentistry. She was also a volunteer zoo dentist for 12 years, for the Pt. Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. You can reach her at UpTown Dental, 265.857.0835. Visit her website at www. UpTownDentalGigHarbor.com

Cranial Sacral Therapy

How it could benefit your health and wellness. By Susan Hoffman. THERE ARE OCCASIONS in our lives when many of us require adjunct therapy to whatever ails us. Cranial sacral therapy, like so many alternative options for health and wellbeing, is often a therapy that can be combined with other medical interventions. This treatment modality has been very effective in helping people who suffer from migraine headaches, chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, post- surgical recovery, TMJ, learning disabilities, stress-related issues, and even trauma. Dr. John E. Upledger, an osteopathic physician, and the founder of cranial sacral therapy developed this treatment at Michigan State University. While serving as a professor of biomechanics, he first discovered the rhythmic movement of the craniosacral system. Subsequently, after years of research and clinical testing, Dr. Upledger developed a treatment modality that has since been able to help millions of people. Since then, almost 38,000 practitioners have been trained to administer craniosacral therapy. Typically this type of therapy is administered by osteopaths, medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and acupuncturists. Most commonly, cranial sacral therapy has become part and parcel of the work of massage therapists typically offer their clients. Typically a craniosacral session can be a one to two hour session as the practitioner uses gentle finger pressure. As a patient you are fully clothed during the treatment and the practitioner uses very light touch to selected points around the head, torso, knees and feet. The therapist monitors the rhythm of the craniosacral system to evaluate potential restrictions and imbalances.

56   Gig Harbor Living Local | www.GoGigHarbor.com

The goal of cranial sacral therapy is to improve the functioning of the central nervous system while enhancing the client’s own natural healing mechanisms in order to to reduce negative effects of stress. During the session, there is no bone manipulation or forceful touch. The goal of cranial sacral therapy is to improve the functioning of the central nervous system while enhancing the client’s own natural healing mechanisms in order to to reduce negative effects of stress. Still many people wonder how or why cranial sacral assists in healing. The general belief which is taught in medical school is that skull bones fuse during infancy and are firmly fixed by adulthood. However, craniosacral practitioners believe that the cranial sutures have movement and are not firmly fixed. Since the cerebrospinal fluid rhythmically pulses, skull bones need to be slightly moving continuously to accommodate the cerebrospinal fluid input and outflow. Though the rhythmic impulses may be very subtle, they can be palpated by trained and sensitive hands. Those who perform this therapy are able to assess the wave-like motion in places where the craniosacral membrane attaches to bones. Areas like the tailbone, skull, and sacrum benefit

“WHERE FAMILY IS ALWAYS FIRST.”

from this therapy because blockages are removed with very light adjustments. As with any treatments, whether mainstream or alternative, it is important to gather information to help educate you in making a choice and to obtain references for a particular practitioner. You can find more information from Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America, International Association of Healthcare Practitioners or the Upledger Institute and a couple of websites listed below. Some people have said craniosacral therapy was a miracle for them because their pain was relieved, their mobility improved, or emotional disorders diminished. The goal most of us aspire to is for overall health, resistance to disease, and physical and mental well- being. How we achieve this is our option and our choice.

The Green Turtle Restaurant Amazing service and scrumptious food, all with an unbeatable view! By Sarah Polyakov. THE GREEN TURTLE RESTAURANT is truly Gig Harbor’s own hidden gem. Offering a world-class menu, engaging and friendly service, and offering a front row seat to views of the harbor and Mt. Rainier, The Green Turtle welcomes you to make their restaurant your new home away from home. Extensive lunch and dinner menus offer tremendous variety and a little something for everyone. Sue Glenn, the absolutely lovely and gracious owner of The Green Turtle welcomes adults and families alike into her beautifully decorated and cozy restaurant. She notes that, “We are grateful for everyone who comes to our restaurant and we want to know that each customer’s day has become even better as a result of their experience at our restaurant.” Starters include manila clams in white wine, house-made lobster cakes, calamari in a black bean sauce, jumbo tiger prawns scampi and teriyaki beef tips.

Some of the lunch offerings include Kobe beef sliders, Ahi tuna salad, lobster cakes, salmon wraps, steak salad, prawn caesar, and wild organic greens.

After lunch or dinner, be sure to take a stroll down to The Green Turtle’s fun sandy beach that is complete with a fire pit, lighted palm trees, and Adirondack chairs.

Some of their dinner offerings at The Green Turtle include scallop & prawn piripiri, Muscovy duck, filet mignon surf & turf, macadamia nut-crusted halibut with pineapple chutney, and wild salmon finished with white wine. Dinner offerings are complemented by an extensive wine list.

Even though The Green Turtle might appear to be a restaurant generally saved for special occasions, the owners encourage you to visit often. Join Sue and her culinary team for starters, lunch, dinner, or cocktails on the patio. Be sure to ask about their military discount and specials.

All desserts are made in house for the enjoyment of customers: silky crème brule, rich chocolate mousse, tangy key lime pie, flourless chocolate cake, and warm, comforting bread pudding.

The Green Turtle restaurant supports various charities and organizations such as Miracle Ranch, local high schools, and the annual Spirit 105.3 auction.

Sue believes in offering her guests only the most fresh and high quality ingredients since the most delicious meals result by using only the best ingredients. Their seasonal organic garden includes fresh beets, chives, garlic, onions, leeks, and eleven different varieties of peppers, fennel and eggplant that serve as the foundation for many menu items. All seafood items are wildcaught and fresh. The dining atmosphere is one Gig Harbor’s favorite since it includes an outdoor deck with heaters and tables and endless views of Mt. The seafood chowder has been an annual GH favorite for many consecutive years, and one spoonful is all it takes to make you a fan, too!” —Victoria G.

Leavenworth, Washington

Fun for the whole family all year long. By Colin Anderson. Photos courtesy Jesse & Molly Hewitt. NESTLED IN THE CASCADE Mountains between Seattle and Wenatchee is a community unlike any other in the northwest. Leavenworth is like stepping briefly out of the U.S. and into an alpine village somewhere in Germany. Everything from the local shops and restaurants, to the banks, offices and even McDonalds are done up Bavarian style. The surrounding peaks create a dynamic landscape in any direction, making you feel like you’ve been planted in the Alps. There are many ways to experience Leavenworth whether you’re a family, couple, group of friends, or just stopping through on a drive. The Leavenworth Oktoberfest celebration is the top attraction in the fall, and unfortunately you just missed it. But you may want to think about making reservations now so you don’t miss out next year! Thousands of visitors travel from all over to one of the most authentic Oktoberfest celebrations you’ll find outside of Munich. There are four venues featuring live music, arts and crafts, traditional German food, shopping and of course plenty of taps featuring German beers. The event is family friendly by day but tends to get a little more rowdy in the evening, so if you plan on bringing the little ones, get an early start on the festivities. Families can also visit Kinderplatz, which is an area just for kids with a climbing wall, bouncy toys, and L-Bow the Clown. These October weekends are the most popular of the year so be sure to book plenty early as hotels and condos fill up fast. If large crowds and large celebrations aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other weekends that the town slows down, but still offers plenty for everyone. November marks the start of the Christmas season celebration and the Christkindlmarket. The three day market over Thanksgiving weekend includes food, arts and crafts, unique Christmas gifts and a visit from St. Nick himself. After Thanksgiving the downtown is lit up with Christmas lights during the evening, and once the snow falls kids can go sledding right downtown. On any other day there is plenty to see and do. Take a stroll down the main drag and visit some of the unique stores like the hat shop. Try the world’s hottest pepper sauce or sample countless

Enjoy a brat or have a nice romantic dinner at one of the many fine restaurants. You can pick up everything from funny souvenirs to authentic crafts made in Germany. Another reason thousands of people flock to Leavenworth is for the wine tasting. The Columbia and Cascade Valleys are becoming recognized more and more each year for their superb growing conditions, and the awards keep racking up for vintners who call these areas home. There are literally dozens of wineries and tasting rooms around. You

can walk, hire a guide, or even book a limo tour that will take you out of the city to some additional tasting rooms and you won’t have to worry about driving. If you enjoy a drive, the two lane highways surrounding the town are beautiful for a leisurely cruise. The fall colors are some of the best around and there are plenty of turnouts to snap a few photos. You can also drive up to the top of Steven’s Pass and stop into Lake Wenatchee State Park or if the snow is falling, drop into Steven’s Pass Ski hill for a day on the slopes. There are also opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and during the summer months fishing, rafting and tubing the rivers. Your options are limitless and with so much to do, you’ll want to visit during all four seasons. Most of the hotels and bed and breakfasts are within walking distance of town, and if you book a condo or vacation rental, it’s usually less than ten minutes away. Leavenworth may sound like a ‘tourist trap’ town, but it is truly proud of its Bavarian traditions and the locals are happy to show you around and teach you a German tradition or two. For a list of events, attractions, places to eat, and places to stay visit www.leavenworth.org.

4. Accessorize. A few splashes of cohesive color liven up the photography and spark interest. Think new pillows, fresh towels and a rug that ties it all together. 5. Make it sparkle. Power wash the house & exterior spaces, clean windows, gutters & roof, detail the interior, touch up paint as needed.
