The Votes Are In!
THE VOTES ARE IN, and for the first time ever the community of Gig Harbor will be recognizing local businesses for going above and beyond, providing the absolute best of the best service. Over the next few weeks, we will be revealing the top vote-getters through social media, and on October 6 we will host a Gig Harbor’s Finest event to reveal the winners. Please come join us as we celebrate Gig Harbor’s Finest! In the meantime, September is here, and the long hot days of summer will soon be a distant memory. Getting back into a new routine can be challenging, but there are ways to make it easier on the whole family. We all seem to lead busy lives. Kids have homework, extracurricular activities, sports and more. As parents, we may feel as though we are constantly in the car going from one place to another, leaving little time for some quality moments spent with our kids. Why not do something to make this year a little easier and create memories at the same time? Plan a time each week, whether it is during the week or on the weekend, that is set aside exclusively for just you and your family. Kids will know ahead of time so that they can plan around that time. Pick up the kids after practice and go out for pizza. Maybe plan a Saturday-morning hike. Take a picnic to the park, or during the winter months, pack up the ski gear and head up to the mountain. To make it easier on you, try planning the week’s meals ahead of time to ensure you aren’t running to the grocery store a few times a week after work or on your lunch hour.
“WHERE FAMILY IS ALWAYS FIRST.” “ We are committed to providing professional, compassionate assistance in a safe and nurturing environment, ensuring a life of dignity and independence for seniors in our community.”
Time seems to slip away so quickly, and I am a firm believer in devoting as much time as we can to family while we still can. If you are at a loss of ideas for how to spend some quality time together, take a look at our calendar in this publication and online. And remember, making memories does not have to cost money. It is the time that is spent with one another that will create traditions and memories that will last a lifetime.

A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT: GIG HARBOR (PARK)ING DAY 2017
WHY NOW? And why in Gig Harbor? … Why not Gig Harbor? What is a social experiment and why is it important? We are often so busy with life that we miss opportunities to reflect, connect and intentionally design our lives and our communities. In simple terms, a social experiment is a human experience in the real world to create awareness of more perspectives. Park(ing) Day promotes the use of temporary open space, also called parklets, to jumpstart conversations both in and about our built environment. If you are new to this conversation, let’s get you in the know. This is an international event that has proven to be popular and successful around the world. Our local community is growing and changing. Let’s get out there and meet each other. The best things in life are getting to know people, creating relationships and having experiences.

As a community, we design and build physical spaces for us to conduct daily life. The beauty of this event is bringing people and passions together into temporary physical spaces to alter our perspectives of our own city. This will be the first time ever all of these community organizations and local merchants will be solely there to chat with you! You have their attention. Please bring your children, parents and animals and meet more people. This event will be truly successful when there are many generations involved. Park(ing) Day+ 2017- To participate, you’ll want the details (this is a free event): • Friday September 15, noon to 5pm, parklets will be set up in the morning. Come on out and socialize! • Saturday September 16, 10am to 2pm, the experiment continues. Parklets will be cleaned up when chatting ceases. What to expect? The Park(ing) Day route will be Downtown Gig Harbor. There will be clusters of three to four parklets on the streets per zone: Judson, Pioneer, Skansie Brothers Park, Millville, Donkey Creek and Finholm. Maps will be provided with information to help identify your interests. There will be activities such as giant Jenga, painting rocks, listening to music, learning about local heritage, culture and history, and more! There will be plenty of places to sit and take in the sights.

INTRODUCE COLOR TO YOUR HOME THROUGH PAINT, PILLOWS AND MORE BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER DO YOU FEAR COLOR? Are you too chicken to splash some paint on your wall because it may be too bold or trendy? The good news is that paint is one of the least expensive things to change, and it’s one of the easiest things to test out before you commit. Most paint stores will sell quart-size containers of any color, allowing you to paint a small section of your wall and observe the color in different light throughout the day. That way, you can live with it before you commit. Other ways to introduce color would be to use patterns and bold colors in accent pieces. Often times, adding that splash of color or texture is all a room needs to really pull everything together. There are many ways to introduce that color accent. Throw pillows, furniture, backsplashes, tile accents, island cabinetry, glass and more. Just remember, not everything has to match. In fact, when you match everything, it becomes too monochromatic and you lose a lot of the color simply because there’s no contrast. If you have dark cabinets, you should contrast that with lighter countertops. If you have dark flooring, you can contrast that with painted or a lighter stain color on the cabinets. In the kitchen, lots of folks are going with a painted island whereas the perimeter cabinets are a stained wood. Adding stain glass or a pattern glass in your entry door, cabinets or table tops would be another way to introduce color and textures. Besides paint and furniture, window coverings are another great way to add colors and textures. It’s amazing how much a pattern or color will pop with natural light illuminating it. Most have features that allow
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

you to still see out and won’t encroach on your views. There are just a few things to remember when it comes to adding color and increasing the boldness factor in your home. Here are some things you will definitely want to avoid: • Using too many accent pillows. I’m talking so many you can’t sit on the sofa or it takes you half an hour to unload your bed. It’s simple. Select a few pillows of varying sizes, shapes and patterns and display them together. • Too many trinkets. If you have to move things out of the way on a side table so you can set your drink down, you may have too much display. Select a few and store the rest. During seasonal changes, swap them out. • Too many patterns and textures. You don’t wear stripes with plaid right? Same goes for your house; you shouldn’t have competing patterns or textures. If the sofa has a pattern, select solid color pillows. If the wall has patterned wallpaper, go with simple solid or complementary window covering. In short, don’t be afraid to add color or textures, and if you question whether or not it’s a good choice, seek out and ask a professional for their input.
Your Life. Your Goals. Our Focus.
GETTING (MENTALLY) READY TO RETIRE EVEN THOSE WHO HAVE SAVED MILLIONS MUST PREPARE FOR A LIFESTYLE ADJUSTMENT. BY CHERI JOHNSON, FINANCIAL ADVISOR, STRATEGIC WEALTH ADVISORS A SUCCESSFUL RETIREMENT is not merely measured in financial terms. Even those who retire with small fortunes can face boredom or depression and the fear of drawing down their savings too fast. How can new retirees try to calm these worries? Two factors may help: a gradual retirement transition and some guidance from a financial professional. An abrupt break from the workplace may be unsettling. Imagine a well-paid finance manager at an auto dealership whose personal identity is closely tied to his job. His best friends are all at the dealership. He retires, and suddenly his friends and sense of purpose are absent. He finds that he has no compelling reason to leave the house, nothing to look forward to when he gets up in the morning. Guess what? He hates being retired. On the other hand, if he prepares for retirement years in advance of his farewell party by exploring an encore career, engaging in varieties of selfemployment, or volunteering, he can retire with something promising ahead of him. If he broadens the scope of his social life so that he can see friends and family regularly and interact with people in different settings, his retirement may also become more enjoyable. Practically all retirees have some financial anxiety. It relates to the fact of no longer earning a conventional paycheck. You see it in couples who have $60,000 saved for retirement; you see it in couples who have $6 million saved for retirement. Their retirement strategies are about to be tested, in real time. All that careful planning is ready to come to fruition, but there are always unknowns. Some retirees are afraid to spend. They fear spending too much too soon. With help from a financial professional, they can thoughtfully plan
DON’T WORRY
a withdrawal rate. While no retiree wants to squander money, all retirees should realize that their retirement savings were accumulated to be spent. Being miserly with retirement money contradicts its purpose. The average 65-year-old who retires in 2017 will have a retirement lasting approximately 20 years, by the estimation of the Social Security Administration. So, why not spend some money now and enjoy retired life? Broadly speaking, our spending declines as we age. The average U.S. household headed by an 80-year-old spends 43-percent less money than one headed by a 50-year-old.
While developing a personalized financial plan for you, Cheri Johnson Strategic Wealth Advisors LLC will walk you through a step-by-step planning process designed to give you confidence in Your Life decisions. Once your objectives have been established, we will help you customize appropriate strategies to pursue Your Goals. Then we’ll will help you build a financial plan keeping Our Focus on you and utilizing strategic solutions to address: • • • • • •
Tax Management Investment Management Income Strategies Social Security Maximization Estate Conservation Legacy Planning
Retirement challenges people in two ways. The obvious challenge is financial; the less obvious challenge is mental. Both tests may be met with advance thought. To achieve the most satisfying transition into retirement, plan to “retire to” something ahead rather than “retire from” your job. A simple mental shift may make all the difference in facing the retirement unknown. Our financial planning process includes an indepth forecast of income, “what if” scenarios and legacy planning. It’s important to spend time on this process several years in advance of your retirement date to remove the fear, uncertainty and concerns about finances and to address the activities and events you plan to enjoy. MINDSET MATTERS RESPONDING CALMLY TO STRESSFUL SITUATIONS
BY DEBORAH OLIVE, BUSINESS/LIFE COACH
FO L LOW YO U R B R E AT H
“Between a stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” – Viktor Frankl WHEN LISA’S RECENTLY HIRED processor accepted a position with one of her competitors and gave her less than a week’s notice, she didn’t react with annoyance as she may have a few months prior. Instead, she thanked Josh for his work and wished him well in his new venture. For most of us, it takes practice to be this calm in the midst of news that delivers a significant impact on our business.
resignation would immediately impact Lisa and her business. Even though it meant taking time she promised to spend with her family, she’d need to work extra hours to fill the gap. Josh’s absence would negatively impact her marketing activities and client care. Now she needed to take the time to hire his replacement. In this market, finding a new team member with the proper licenses could prove difficult. Investing in training to acquire that license requires both time and money. Lisa knew all of this in an instant; nevertheless, she responded calmly. Lisa knows the energy it takes to fret over the things she can’t control. She also knows that in the midst of all the deadline pressures in her business, she needs to stay focused. No doubt, her ability to respond calmly is one of the reasons Lisa’s performance is among the top five in this nationwide mortgage company.
Lisa’s mortgage business was booming, and she and her team were struggling to process the high volume of applications they received each week. Three months ago, Lisa anticipated a summer surge in her business, so she redirected some of her marketing time and risked money she anticipated earning in July, August and September to hire and train a new processor. Josh became a valuable member of the team and was growing more capable each day. He looked like a good fit. His unexpected
Many of us become upset over less: One of our vendors raises prices by 15 percent; a dog’s muddy paws land on our white slacks; a team member blows off a meeting; someone cuts us off in traffic. Most of us face a multitude of annoyances with the potential to impact our sense of calmness on any given day. If you feel tired and stressed by the end of the day, chances are you felt annoyed, irritated or angry at some point. Imagine the freedom that comes without the stress.

What would greater clarity, focus, ease and energy mean for you? If you feel tired and stressed by the end of the day, chances are you felt annoyed, irritated or angry at some point. Imagine the freedom that comes without the stress.
For example, a practice of following your breath for only 10 minutes a day significantly increases your capacity to focus on what you want rather than what your environment delivers. A practice of deliberate gratitude produces a cocktail of neurochemicals that help you think more clearly. Setting your intention for a particular outcome activates the part of your brain that “watches” for those opportunities. Whether you have 10 minutes or 59 minutes to invest each day, the time you set aside for your mindset practice will be returned many times over. You won’t lose time to unnecessary stress. Because your mindset impacts decisions, relationships and even health, there’s no way to predict the magnitude of these benefits to you. CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF ART Greater Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour. By Jillian Chandler
THE THIRD WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER marks the annual Greater Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour. This free family friendly event, held 10am to 5pm September 15, 16 and 17, provides a bridge between artists and the public, inviting the community to take an inside look into a number of artists’ working studios throughout the area. Join them as they celebrate their 25th anniversary!
the materials they use. Some studios will feature hands-on activities for visitors.” The event is enjoyable for the entire family, as the self-guided tour allows one to go at their own pace, decide which studios most interest them, hand select which ones to visit and spend as little or much time at one location as they’d like.
This year, 27 professional artists in 18 studios throughout Gig Harbor, Key Peninsula, Fox Island and South Kitsap welcome visitors to their studios to admire and purchase fine and functional works of art.
“If you have ever wondered how fused glass is made, or wanted to know more about various painting techniques, or to see the tools and methods of printmaking, this is a great opportunity to observe, ask, learn and get inspired,” says Gustanski.
“Inside the working studios of our local artists, all can see art in the making, learn about the artistic process, ask questions and purchase oneof-a-kind creations direct from the artist,” says Dr. Julie Ann Gustanski, president emeritus and CEO of the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. “Many artists will be offering free demonstrations in their studios where all can see and experience their work process first-hand and learn about

FAMILY FIRST ADULT FAMILY HOMES BY JULIE THOMSON

WHEN STARTING OUR BUSINESS 20-plus years ago, Chris and I always held the belief that family, above all else, as the most important part of life. It’s a belief we’ve never lost sight of in our line of work and something that is constantly reaffirmed through the interactions we share with our residents and their families. Like many, Chris and I value the bond we share with those we love more than anything. We’ve always felt extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to help so many during times of great need, and always approach every situation as if those we care for are a part of our own family. Regardless, losing a loved one is one of the most difficult things we face in life. With that, I would like to share my story in hopes that it will help others. My father, John Engel, sadly passed from dementia on March 11, 2017. He was 75 years old and had no prior family history of the disease. He was a smart, active and healthy man who always did the best he could to take care of himself. Despite a demanding schedule as a vice president of an insurance company, he always made time for his family and devoted countless hours to hobbies he loved like hiking, skiing, writing and so much more. Dementia can be a long, difficult journey. It’s something we see so often with our residents and their families, yet something that’s hard to imagine ever happening to those in your immediate family. Throughout this long and difficult process, you continually have hope but slowly come to realize that eventually you must say goodbye. I, like so many I’ve come to know, recently came to this realization during my father’s final months. Though my family and I are still healing, we felt so fortunate to have been able to care for our grandparents, my uncle, many other close
friends and family members, and now my father, in their final days. Losing a parent is a heartbreaking experience. The rock you grew up knowing your entire life is suddenly gone, leaving a void you’ve never known before. My dad was not only my rock but was also Mom’s other half. They truly were their best selves when they were together. Seeing the man your mother loved her entire life slip away is another difficult moment you cannot prepare for. We were not ready when my dad’s physician, Dr. Kramp, said, “It’s time” several months ago, though we found comfort knowing that we would be able to care for my dad. At the end of our conversation, Dr. Kramp said he “knows of a really good place.” We all smiled, thanked him and agreed that it was time. Hearing those words from our long-time trusted doctor hit home. Shortly after, we placed Dad on our waiting list, and even in his dementia state, he jokingly said to us, “What! I have supported this organization for nearly two decades and I am on the waiting list?” We all laughed. Dad always had a great sense of humor. Moving day was one of the hardest days, but Dad made it easy on us and so did our amazing team at Family First! Within a couple days I could see Mom looking more rested and less stressed. She was sad to go home without him but visited every day and knew when she left he would be loved and well cared for. She asked, “Honey, what do families do that don’t have Family First?” It was helpful knowing my mom found comfort during this difficult time in both of our lives. Much of this comfort came from our wonderful staff who immediately bonded with Dad. Many of them knew him from working for us for several years. I loved the way they made him smile and interacted with him in his fragile state.

As Dad’s care increased, our team of caregivers, Franciscan Hospice and Dr. Kramp worked together to ensure he was getting every possible need met. Chris and I knew this is what our team does for our residents every day, but to be a family member on the other side gave us a deeper insight into how our team brings peace to our residents and their loved ones up until the very end. Everyone’s experience is different for those needing continuing care, however, bringing the quality of life to those who can no longer take care of themselves has been and continues to be the greatest honor that Chris, myself and our entire staff get to experience within our work at Family First. Thank you for reading our story and trusting us with the care of your loved one.

RACE FOR A SOLDIER More than just a run
By Colin Anderson Photos courtesy of OnTheRunPhotos.com
PTSD IS AN ACRONYM just about all of us are familiar with—Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It can come on from a wide range of instances but is especially prevalent amongst soldiers returning from deployment, even more so if they have been in battle or witnessed other atrocities. One of Gig Harbor’s local organizations is hoping to give new meaning to the four-letter word with the phrase PTSD: Permission To Start Dreaming. It’s an idea that comes from tragedy, but through that tragedy, lives are being changed for the better all over the country.
event have developed from the race concept and given the organization even greater public awareness. “I have sensed for a long time that not only Gig Harbor residents are generous but most civilians in our country are concerned about our veterans and their mental health and wellness after serving their country,” said Mayne. “Most citizens truly want to do more than just thank them for their service, but they need an avenue or opportunity to do so, and that is what the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation is making available to them.”
Like so many families throughout the history of our country, Leslie Mayne lost her brave son Kyle at a far too early stage of his life. Never wanting to abandon the memory of her son’s bravery and a drive to provide support for other young men and women returning from deployment, Mayne founded Permission To Start Dreaming. The foundation partners with veteran’s programs both locally and nationally and has created one of the largest yearly events in the community.
While the race itself provides entertainment, remembrance and inspiration, the annual kick-off prayer breakfast is fast becoming one of the most talked about portions of the event. “Seven years ago, when it became clear to me that the creation of the Prayer Breakfast was needed, it was, to be honest, my attempt as my ‘love letter to God.’ I was so grateful that I was walking out of the darkness, or if you will, the wilderness of despair, intense sadness and depression after Kyle’s death,” said Mayne.
The first Race for a Soldier was held in 2011, and today the number of runners tackling the half marathon or 5k surpasses 1,500. Other events like the Swing for a Soldier golf tournament and Pull for a Soldier trap shooting

speakers to address the crowd. Tables sell out each year as do overflow bleacher seating due to the response from hearing these people speak. Speakers this year include Chaplain Dean Bonura, who is about to retire after 30 years in the U.S. Army. Since his participation is not in an official capacity, his comments will not represent an official endorsement by the Army. However, he is going to talk about what he knows of spiritual/moral injury. Jimmy Hatch will return to the stage for a third time as his story and his ability to convey what his work as a Navy specialist and working with the Seals, including his extremely dangerous mission to retrieve Beau Bergdahl. Hatch speaks about the loss of his working dog during that mission and how it lead him to create the Spikes K9 Fund. Finally, author of “Beauty of a Darker Soul,” Major Josh Mantz, will tell his amazing story which includes flatlining for 15 minutes when shot in Iraq. Proceeds from this year’s race are going toward a program called The Warrior PATHH (Progressive and Alternative Therapies for Healing Heroes). “Created by combat veterans for combat veterans, the Warrior PATTH is a seven-day immersive and intensive experience designed to help combat veterans make peace with their past so they can begin planning for their new mission at home,” said Mayne.

Since 2013, 26 Warrior PATHH programs have been conducted with some incredible findings. “In just two days, PATHH has made breakthroughs that take the average medical model 12 to 24 months”, said Dr. Brett Moore, former Army psychologist. The Permission To Dream Foundation is looking to make this program a permanent fixture in the Pacific Northwest. For those wanting to register for the race, they can do so online at RaceForASoldier.org. There you will find all the information you’ll need in regard to packet pickup and other events that come up throughout the year. The cost is $90 for the half marathon and $40 for the 5k with military discounts available. Each participant receives a race shirt and dog chain. The gun goes off at 7am on Sunday, September 24, with awards presented at 10am. As the event continues to grow, so does the number of lives Mayne, her board and volunteers are able to touch. “We know that ‘fixing the problem’ is going to have to come from outside of the institutions. It is incumbent upon us as grateful Americans to ensure that our warriors have this program that is a proven model and transforming their lives to become the best men and women that God designed them to be after they serve this country.”

S U C IN FO Pied Piper - The Red Barn Feeds The Soul Of The Community BY DAN AZNOFF. PHOTOS BY GLEN EHRHARDT.
IT HAS BEEN two-and-a-half years since Susan Ricketts made her first visit as a volunteer to the Red Barn Youth Center in Gig Harbor. She remembers the teenage girl she encountered who was frustrated with her assignment to find pictures of food to out cut of a magazine. “She had cut out pictures of Oreos and processed lunch meat,” Ricketts recalled. “She did not identify the bunches of bananas or fresh produce as food. It was clear that the only food this child had at home came out of a package.” Ricketts, who is one of only three paid staff members at the youth center, has made it her mission to include fresh fruits and vegetables as part of every meal she prepares for teenagers who visit the Red Barn after school. Many of the fresh foods come from the garden she tends behind the building near Peninsula High School. The meals she prepares for the teens at the Red Barn can often be the only healthy food the teens have every day, according to Glen Ehrhardt, the vice president and chief operating officer for the Red Barn. Ehrhardt said Ricketts has become known as the Pied Piper for the loyal following from teens who
come to the Red Barn to study and socialize. “I think she would adopt every one of the teens if she could,” said Ehrhardt.
Young people walk in looking for guidance and quickly adopt the mission of the Red Barn to become mentors for younger students. Assistant Director Kellie Bennett has only been with the youth program since November but has already seen how Ricketts became known as “The Fixer.” “She is a fixer of problems,” said Bennett. “Not just with the young people. She connects equally well with parents. She brings groups together if it means helping the kids.” Bennett paid Ricketts the ultimate compliment, saying the Red Barn—and the world—would be a better place with more people like Ricketts. The Red Barn is so much more than a place

for kids to hang out after school, according to Bennett. She said young people walk in looking for guidance and quickly adopt the mission of the Red Barn to become mentors for younger students. Older kids, she said, come to the Red Barn knowing there will be mandatory study time to finish their homework. Volunteers and members of the paid staff are available to help with the challenges of difficult assignments. “The younger kids look up to the older kids, especially if the adults only have minimal knowledge of the subject they are working on,” Bennett said with a smile. “The dynamics at the Red Barn nurture the younger kids and give the older kids a sense of self-worth and confidence.” Bennett remembers one young person who came to the Red Barn looking for compassion because of the tough times he was having at home. The teenager was thankful for the support he received from the staff and his peers at the Red Barn, giving him the strength to not fall back into his old habits of causing trouble. “It was just a matter of finding a group of people who made him feel like somebody cared,” said Bennett. “He began by asking for help but quickly transitioned into a confident teenager
who completed his assignments without having to be reminded and turned assignments at school.
for pickleball and volleyball, a climbing wall, a barbecue area and a fire pit. The second phase was completed through donations, a robust grant writing program and volunteer opportunities including a partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Funding for both capital projects included grants and foundations, individual giving, donations from area churches and businesses and special events.
He was struggling with school, but now he is thriving. The Red Barn opened as the community response to the statewide 2012 Healthy Youth Survey that indicated that high school seniors on the Key Peninsula had higher instances of substance abuse and binge drinking, while reports of bullying among students as young as eighth grade were higher than students of the same age across Washington.
Resource for all The Red Barn has evolved over the five years since it first opened to meet the challenges that face young people and their families on the Peninsula. It is now a resource for parents and families.
Development of the actual Red Barn was conducted in two major phases. Phase One involved the development of a common room with stool counter seating that provided a coffee lounge atmosphere. The Red Barn now has additional booth seating and a large open area with tables and chairs for the young people to chat and have study sessions. There are also opportunities for young people to participate in other activities, such as lessons to learn to play musical instruments. Completion of the first phase was done through public donations from local businesses and many private parties.
“Unfortunately, there were no recreation clubs, coffee shops or other youthoriented gathering places in the community, explained Executive Director Clint Rossen. He said the Red Barn hosted a record number of young people during the last year, with as many as 50 kids showing up to hang out after school. The first hour after students from Peninsula High School and any of the middle schools arrive at the Red Barn begins with a healthy meal and mandatory study time, according to Rossen. Once the homework is done, the young people break into impromptu games of soccer, basketball or take turns at the pool table. The Red Barn also provides an art class with cooperation from the Peninsula School District once every week.
Phase Two incorporated a larger multi-purpose area with a movable stage. The area is utilized for a wide variety of activities such as basketball, concerts, stage productions and guest speakers. It is also available for rental by outside groups. There is a community garden outside the main structure, as well as a court

The school district has recognized the important role the Red Barn plays in the lives of teens, said Rossen. The district now has buses to transport students to the youth center after school and provides buses to take them home at night. The director tells the story about one young person who was having trouble at home before the district offered transportation to and from the Red Barn. The young man would stay until dark and then walk more than eight miles to get home in the dark, often in the rain. “He never missed a day at the Red Barn,” said Rossen. “One particularly cold and rainy night, I decided to follow him when he left. When I realized that he had been walking home by himself every day, the staff began to take turns to drive him home.” Rossen said the boy’s father was a drug addict. He had made the decision on his own that he did not want to go down the same path as his father. “His experience at the Red Barn convinced him there was a better way.” Dan Aznoff is a freelance writer based in Mukilteo, Washington, who is dedicated to preserving the stories of our lives for future generations. Living Local COMMUNITY TRANSITION PROGRAM AND EMPLOYMENT TRAINING & TRANSITION PROGRAM OPEN THE WORLD OF WORK TO SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND
A VAN PULLS UP to the Gig Harbor Foursquare Church and six neatly dressed students jump out and follow their two instructors into the building to begin their morning of work. The high school-age students are participating in the Employment Training & Transition Program (ET&T) at Peninsula High School. The older students, ages 18 to 21, are in the Community Transition Program (CTP) through Peninsula School District. Both programs help special needs students learn the skills they need to transition into the work world.
what it takes to become a janitor and what the job entails. “We cleaned the Foursquare Church because they are one of the local businesses we support and do our job skills training at,” said Kelsey Wessinger, special education teacher for CTP. “We are lucky to have so much support in our community, and we have very diverse jobs that allow our students to explore a variety of interests and skills. We give a variety of support to our students as needed. Our goal is to provide a seamless transition from school to a positive contributing community member in their local community.”
Community support is critical to the success of the program, and the Gig Harbor Foursquare Church is one of the many community partners that provides opportunities for job training. The six students are learning

read instructions and photos of the cleaning products and tools needed to do their assigned job. Bo Hodges, 19, is the master of the bathroom. He diligently works through his list, carefully checking each item and matching the proper cleaning supplies to the task. Hodges loves working at the church. When questioned about his plans for the future he said, “I want to work for Kohl’s.” Sixteen-year-old Nathalie is a serious and focused young lady who worked quickly to complete her assigned task. “I did the bathroom and vacuumed. I did the counter in the kitchen and I mopped. I like helping. One of my favorite things is to help people. I want to work with animals. I love animals and want to work at a cat and dog shelter,” she said.
Aryn Anderton is a paraeducator with the Peninsula High School ET&T Program. She helps supervise the teenagers and young adults with their assigned tasks. “I love working with the students and the amazing team of educators in the ET&T Program. It is a rewarding experience seeing the growth in each student,” she said. “The program is a win-win for local businesses and the program itself; it provides job training and helps foster independence in these students, helping them to see their strengths as we give them positive feedback.” Sometimes it can be a challenge for special needs students to fit in at school. Christian Portillo, 20, was embraced by the Peninsula High School football team where he served as the team manager. After graduating high school, he has continued on in a volunteer

role. “I did the vacuum and now I am doing the trash. This is teaching me how to do a job when I grow up,” he said. Portillo wants to be a fireman when he “grows up.” When the students approach graduation from the program, the instructors work closely with parents and caregivers to develop a plan. “Students either leave connected with an agency that helps support them in finding and maintaining a job or making sure parents and students leave knowing about all the connections they can have in the community,” said Wessinger. “Adult day health programs, Special Olympics and respite care are some of the options. We work individually with each family to come up with a plan that best suits them.”

In 2017, 10 students graduated from the program. According to Wessinger, “Five qualified for the School to Work Program through the Developmental Disabilities Administration. Three out of the five students have been given parttime employment. One student is working at the YMCA in childcare, one student is employed at Harbor Speech Pathology assisting with housekeeping, and our last student is in the process of being hired at Jimmy John’s. The other two are continuing to work with a job coach to find or develop a job that best suits their skills and interests. The other students who graduated have an alternative plan to working and are involved with community programs, respite care or adult day health programs.” The 2017-2018 school year will provide new opportunities for fun as well. “We have been working closely with parents and students who are past and current graduates of the program to help in the development of a Friendship Club. They will be meeting weekly in Gig Harbor and providing free and diverse activities for students to stay connected and involved with their peers and community,” Wessinger said. Elle Scott of iGalen BY JILLIAN CHANDLER
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

LAUNCHED LESS THAN A YEAR AGO in the United States and Canada, followed by Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore, and soon to open in Australia and New Zealand, iGalen is taking the world by storm. Creators of Emulin+, the world’s first carbohydrate manager, a patented blend of grape skin, onion skin and green coffee—minus the caffeine—comes from Nobel Prize-nominated research using sophisticated 3D modeling with supercomputers that searched all known databases of human-enzyme systems and plant compounds found in nature. Due to modern agriculture and food processing, the purpose of Emulin+ is to replace those essential nutrients that are lacking in the modern diet. The research has shown that as a result of today’s society consuming too many highly refined carbohydrates in their daily diets, the result has been carbohydrate toxicity, causing inflammation and leading to a majority of modern diseases. Elle Scott, a distributor for iGalen right here in Gig Harbor, is dedicated educating those in the community about the product with the goal to help those seeking a healthier diet and lifestyle succeed. So what exactly sets iGalen’s Emulin+ apart from other similar products? According to Elle, “Emulin+ is the world’s first patented and natural carb manager. It contains a botanical mix called Emulin® that helps your body manage refined carbohydrates.” Discovered by Daryl Thompson, a food and bio-chemist, and Dr. Joseph Ahrens, former director of research for the Florida Department of Citrus, Emulin helps in eliminating long-term inflammation. This can be a result of excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates (carbohydrates that have been
stripped of most, if not all, of their nutrients and fiber), and can cause other diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, to name a few. “What Elle finds most rewarding in the work she does is “making a difference, helping people feel better[and] live healthy and happy.” According to Elle, at iGalen, they are fusing innovation and opportunity into a movement; a movement that will lead people to greater health, sustainable wealth and life-long happiness. She adds that the success of the business since its launch on January 30, 2017, is due to the product itself. “Emulin+ sells itself. The testimonials are incredible all across the board.” Keep an eye out for more incredible products that are currently in the works: Ovinex™ (Sheep Collagen), Liphagel™ (Joint Pain Relief), Longvida® (Anti-Inflammatory) and GS515® (21st Centure “Pre-Digested” Ginseng). In addition, iGalen is working on low-sodium salt, low GI sugar, a protein drink and protein bars, stem-cell releaser, brain formula for Alzheimer’s and Aphasia, and Liposomal Collagen. Elle is not only dedicated to working to promote a healthier lifestyle for others here in Gig Harbor—and across the world—but she is passionate about her involvement with the PTSD Foundation (Permission to Start Dreaming), an organization which helps soldiers affected by post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury, and their families, through professional services, stimulating peer adventures and spiritual devotion. As their vision statement says, “Our vision is for every soldier and their families a fulfilled life within reach of their dreams. Our hope is for every American citizen’s heart

the will to make it a reality.” To find out more about this organization, you can visit PTSDFoundation.org. For those interested in more information on purchasing Emulin or how to become an iGalen distributor, contact Elle Scott via phone, email or website.

Health & Lifestyle LEARN TO ADAPT TO STRESS TO BECOME BETTER
Your Life, Your Terms By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor
STRESS. The name itself is synonymous with everything negative in our lives. We stress about our bills, kids, parents, jobs, traffic, food. The list goes on with factors that are both in and out of our control. But if you actually think about what stress really is, is it inherently bad?
We have been told for years that stress causes most illness; our happiness is of the utmost importance, and we need to put ourselves first so we can deal with everything else. This could be why we now see so much entitled behavior. We aren’t taught to cope but rather to avoid anything or anyone that causes stress and remove the negativity from our lives. If we do that, and live a stress-free life, how do we learn to adapt? How do we learn to cope? How do we improve?
Let’s look at this another way. How do our muscles grow? We subject them to external stress and they adapt. What kind and how much stress dictates our rate of adaptation. So if our bodies’ natural response is to adapt, why do we seem to crumble? If this is a learned behavior, do we have to accept it or can we emotionally adapt in the way our muscles do physically? I believe that we can take the stress and use it to our advantage.
Most research in the past that showed stress caused illness was missing one important variable: How did the subjects manage their stress? And what were the subjects’ coping mechanisms? More research has been done with these variables in mind and new information has been found.

Recent studies done by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and other places have shown stress itself doesn’t cause illness; its the changes in our physiological, emotional and behavioral responses when under stress that can lead to disease. Chronic stress is defined as a “state of prolonged tension from internal or external stressors, which may cause various physical manifestations—e.g., asthma, back pain, arrhythmias, fatigue, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, and suppress the immune system.” This is something that most of us have heard before and why we believe we are stressed and therefore suffer from (insert illness here). Now this is where the tough love comes in. Stop it! Do not accept the fate that our lives are stressful and we have to suffer through it. Our lives are the byproduct of our decisions. It isn’t the stress that gets us; it’s our lack of positive coping strategies and our belief that we deserve better. You only deserve better when you work to be better. Earn your better! Are you overweight? Quit eating food that doesn’t nourish your body. Do you have immobility? Move more! Are you tired? Gather more energy from the last two suggestions. We have the ability to change. Every action and every inaction has a consequence. Do not be a victim in your life. Meet your stress head on and do something about it. Realize that some things are out of your control—and that’s OK—but most things aren’t. As Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Every incredible person I have ever known in my life has been exposed to monumental stress. They have lived through truly horrible events, situations or years of struggle. They have come out the other side better. They are people of extraordinary character, and I value being a part of their lives. In contrast, most people I find difficult to be around are the ones who think the world owes them something and that life isn’t fair. They don’t want to work for anything and expect something for nothing. We all have to decide who we want to be and how we want to be remembered. How to successfully adapt to stress to be a better person: • Take responsibility for your actions. If you do it, own it. • Argue to be heard but never to win. • Treat people the way you want to be treated and never based on how they treat you. • Lead by example. • Train your body even if you think you can’t. • Spend less time trying to be happy and more time trying to be useful. • Be a person of your word. Integrity is not negotiable. • Be grateful every day. • Use your stress as fuel. Strength is a choice.

NURTURE, TEACH, & ALLOW MISTAKES
EMPOWERING CHILDREN TO BE INDEPENDENT AND HEALTHY LESSONS FROM A LIONESS BY RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS
I HAD THE PRIVILEGE, for 12 years, to be a volunteer dentist for the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. Lions, tigers, leopards and polar bears don’t get cavities; they break their teeth and need them cleaned. As humans, we get cavities in our teeth, for a number of reasons, but primarily because we have sugar in our diet. As a parent, you can empower your children to have healthy teeth. At the age of 2 to 3 years, children want to brush their own teeth. But they don’t have the dexterity to do a good job until later years. Parents sometimes need to push through this stage, continuing to help despite objections. You’re actually doing them a kindness to floss and brush their teeth for them. On the upside, we don’t have it as tough as a lioness! There was a fascinating Nature Channel show about the developmental stages of lion cubs. When the cubs are first born, the mother nurtures the cubs and protects them from danger. At the age of 2 to 3 weeks, their eyes are open and they’re almost able to run. The lioness brings in something small for them to play with, like a grasshopper, and then eventually brings them a rodent; something that smells of warm blood. Finally, a few more weeks pass and she takes them outside. She controls them at first, corralling them near the den, but the stakes
are up. They play and fall, and they skirt with danger. Then the time comes for the cubs to learn to hunt. She takes them to the edge of the Savannah, sets them up in a line, and snarls and snaps to keep them in one spot. She hunts and takes down an animal, drags it over and eats her fill. Then the cubs eat. After several lessons, she approaches a herd of antelope, picks out a weak animal, snips at the prey and draws blood. Then she releases the cubs to chase the weakened animal. They’re unprepared. They fall down and make mistakes, but eventually they bring down the animal. This time, the lioness lets them eat first.
As a parent, you can empower your children to have healthy teeth. The cubs are weaned in several days. She doesn’t allow them to nurse once they’ve had their first kill. The hardest part of this is that if they weren’t hungry, they wouldn’t hunt. She snaps at them and drives them off when they try to nurse. At the age of one year, the female cub is now a lioness and is pregnant. The cycle
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
54
starts again. Fortunately, we don’t need to snap and drive our young off to stand on their own. As a parent, our role is to nurture, teach, allow for mistakes and, like the lioness, train our children for independence. Oral health and systemic disease often go hand in hand. I do believe that if you take care of your teeth, they’ll take care of you!

IMPROVING OUTCOMES IN HEALTH CARE BETTER COMMUNICATION MEANS BETTER RESULTS BY DEANNA IFF, AU.D., CCC-A WRITTEN FOR HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY
HEALTH CARE CAN BE complicated. Navigating insurance costs, choosing the right medications, finding the appropriate doctors and creating the best plans can be challenging for providers and patients alike. This is especially true in the current health-care environment, where providers are frequently required to keep shorter appointments and see more and more patients. With this sort of pressure, doctors may have less time to spend actually conversing with their patients, and an issue like hearing loss can, unfortunately, slip by unnoticed. Sometimes a nurse or medical assistant, or even a family member, can be there to help interpret and remember instructions, but for many patients, difficulty with communication will lead to poor health-care outcomes. Untreated hearing loss has already been independently linked to depression, a higher risk of falling and accelerated cognitive decline. In the arena of health care, untreated hearing loss has been linked to lower satisfaction with health care, poorer ratings of patient-provider communication, higher medical expenses and a greater likelihood of accidents or other adverse events. By simply identifying and treating hearing loss on the front lines, healthcare outcomes can be greatly improved for the benefit of both the patients and the providers. Depending on the setting, integrating hearing health care into the flow of patient care could take a variety of forms. The goals, however, remain the same across inpatient, outpatient and residential facilities. The first and most obvious goal is to improve communication between patient and provider. The second is to ensure that any necessary follow-up care is
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
56
recommended and appropriate referrals made. The third goal is to affect change in the long term by raising awareness of audiology services among providers, which should help both current and future patients with hearing loss. For healthy adults, hearing screenings should simply be added as part of their annual physicals. Children have mandated hearing screenings throughout the school years, but adults, though more likely to experience age- or noise-related hearing loss, tend to ignore difficulty with hearing until it has progressed to the point of causing issues with work and family. The earlier any hearing loss is identified and treated, the earlier appropriate interventions can be enacted, and the fewer adverse effects are likely to be felt. In an ideal world, audiology could even be included in the same appointment to reduce time off work for patients or family members. With less ambulatory populations, including those in emergent- or intensive-care situations, screening hearing can be more difficult, but not impossible. Within a hospital or residential setting, audiologists can screen for hearing loss and either help by ensuring that the patient’s own hearing devices are functioning properly or by providing other simple assistive listening devices to enable patients to cooperate in their own care successfully. Once patients and providers are aware of communication difficulties, appropriate modifications to the flow of appointments become much easier to accomplish. The bottom line: To maximize the effectiveness of health care, communication between and among providers and patients is essential.
REFLEXOLOGY YOUR MARVELOUS FEET
W A L K I N G C O R R E C T LY
BY DARCIE MILLER, OWNER, LIGHT IN BALANCE YOUR FEET ARE CAPABLE of walking 200,000 miles or more in a lifetime—most of which is done in your first 20 years of life. How you use or abuse them can affect your overall health and well-being. Reflexology is the application of specific pressure by the use of the practitioner’s hand, thumb and fingers to a reflex map resembling the human body, which is believed to exist on the extremities. There is a reflexive map of your entire body located in your feet. Cardiovascular, circulatory, digestive, endocrine, reproductive, urinary, muscular, integumentary and nervous-system reflex points can be found in each foot. Your gait or how you walk can affect these systems. Here is what a normal full step looks like: First there is a heel strike for shock absorption, the lateral or outside edge of your foot which includes your fourth and fifth toes for stability and the ball of your foot ending with your third. Second and lastly, your first toe is used for balance. Walking correctly not only feels good, it gives your insides a nice massage. The good, the bad and the ugly of your gait: How do you walk? • Shuffle: Shufflers pound their toes and forefoot onto the surface they are walking on. The reflexes for your brain, neck, shoulders, lungs, chest and breast are all located within that area. Imagine a constant pounding on those body parts. How would it feel? Not so great. • Heel Walk: Heal walkers pound their heels into the ground. Not only is this a loud way to walk, it can be very painful. Reflexes for the sacrum and tailbone are located here. Ouch! • Tiptoe: Tip-toers walk on their toes. Your brain reflexes are located in the tips of your toes. Imagine walking on your head and brain all day. Not only would this be painful, your sense of balance would be off.
A Holistic alternative to improved health
• On Edge: Edge walkers walk on the lateral or outside edge of their feet. Shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist and hand are some of the reflexes located here. • March: Marchers march up and down when they walk and never get a full walk through, meaning they never use their entire foot to take a step. The arch of your foot contains reflex points for your digestive system, kidneys, liver and pancreas. With reflexology, gentle pressure on these reflex points can help your body systems and realign the bones in your feet. Reflexology can help improve your gait and, therefore, your overall health and well being. Fun Foot Facts: • There are more than 150 possible movements in your feet. • One fourth of all of the bones in your body are located in your feet—26 bones in each foot. • From your knee down there are 32 muscles—19 muscles in your feet help adapt foot shape and 13 leg muscles connect to your feet to move them. • There are thousands of nerve endings in each foot and 60,000 sweat glands; an average person can sweat half a pint of liquid through their feet.

Home Office THE BENEFITS OF WORKING FROM HOME By Jani Gonzalez
B
ack in 2010, the company I was working for on the East Coast did a pilot study on working from home. They work with sensitive information which naturally made them reticent to having employees working remotely. But when they established a secure way to connect from home, they first allowed employees with seven or more years of tenure to work from home one day a week. Not even a year later, they allowed all employees to work one day a week from home. They established clear rules, schedules and trained workers. It made a huge difference in our work weeks as there was at least one day we didn’t have to trek in.
Gallup Poll reports on more happy at-home workers
On a larger scale since then, working from home has become more commonplace and no longer the role of a self-employed business owner. Telecommuting jobs are moving away from the scam aspect (“Make thousands from home!”) and into a legitimate way to work for corporations. The ubiquity of technology has made it possible for us to work remotely from home. Though technology has blurred the lines between home and work in some way, it’s a trade many of us are willing to make in return for an easier commute and improved worklife balance.
The Post credited that increase in engagement to better Internet connectivity and ease in videoconferencing. Companies are seeing the benefits and helping their employees make the transition. This workplace trend is not just a U.S. one either. FlexJobs, one of the more renowned telecommuting job boards, reported that the U.K., Saudi Arabia, Japan and Turkey have companies taking measures to allow more flexible work schedules. Turkey’s government has passed policies protecting telecommuting workers from discrimination. Toyota in Japan is allowing one-third of its workers to work remotely.

A recent Gallup Poll published earlier this year showed an uptick in the number of people working from home. The Washington Post reported that 43 percent of the 7,000 people surveyed work from home, an increase of 4 percent since the last poll in 2012. The poll also showed that people are working more days from home too—between three and four days from home. The workers who spent more time working remotely from home were reported as being the happiest and most engaged in their work.

Remote workers more productive

In a TEDx Stanford talk earlier this year, Nicholas Bloom, professor of economics at the university, spoke about the prevalence and highlighted the benefits of telecommuting.

“It’s a trend that companies can’t ignore,” he said in his talk. “The workplace is a surprisingly distracting place in which to concentrate and work.” He cited a pilot program performed by Ctrip, a Chinese company that was expanding and looking for ways to scale its workforce without spending on office space. The randomly selected part of their workforce to work from home every day except for one day in the office per week. Managers oversaw the work of both remote and in-office employees. The company saw that their remote workers brought in more revenue. “The company found that working remotely saved time and money. Workers completed a full shift as opposed to being late because of traffic or taking an extended lunch break with a colleague,” Bloom said. “Remote workers tended to be more productive, which helps with retention, helps firms be more profitable and reduces congestion [on the roads],” he said.

With the average commute being 45 minutes, that’s an extra hour and 30 minutes employees save themselves, not to mention the environment, from being in traffic. These results coincide with the Gallup Poll’s which cited that employees working remotely reported being the happiest and were more engaged in their work. Living Local’s publisher, Steve Russo, also saw a shift toward remote working and the benefits of it. Russo manages several magazine brands, including Real Northwest Living, Northwest Sizzle, 360 Magazine, Like Media Digital in addition to Living Local with a staff of 15 operates from their personal homes spanning Washington and Northern Idaho.

collaborate “I was researching and recognized there was a shift occurring away from ‘traditional’ workspaces. I also recognized that some of the best talents out there were homebound due to raising kids. We set out to create a flexible, creative workspace that fostered professional growth,” he said in an email. He cited only one negative, which is the loss of in-office collaboration, but noted several benefits, a major one being the ability to obtain talent regardless of location. “We allow our employees to set their own schedules. If we have to ask for checkins, then that person isn’t a self-starter to begin with, and we only want people that push themselves,” Russo said. Motivation and the ability to work autonomously are important prerequisites. If a company is going to trust employees to work from home, those workers need to maintain and show their productivity. Careers ripe for telecommuting Every year, FlexJobs, one of the more well-known job boards, publishes a list of the top-100 companies that offer remote positions to their employees. The 2017 list includes notable companies as Amazon, IBM, Xerox and several government departments such as the Department of Agriculture (No. 18) and the U.S. Department of State (No. 52). FlexJobs also reported that many careers applicable for telecommuting were professional-grade jobs where most workers held a bachelor’s degree and worked half of their work week from home. They too reported an increase in remote workers: 56 percent in 2016, up from 50 percent in 2014. High-level careers that lend themselves to telecommuting include: computing and information technology fields, engineering and architecture, medicine and health, government and finance, customer service, virtual assistance, transcription services, graphic design, and training and sales. Don’t quit your day job yet! While workplaces are recognizing the benefits of working from home, telecommuting jobs aren’t out for grabs. It’s best to search for a job you’re qualified for and inquire about telecommuting possibilities as opposed to solely searching for a remote job. Many positions require communicating through a messaging board no matter how autonomous workers are left to accomplish their tasks. In spite of the growing acceptance of viable telecommuting positions, there are many temporary jobs that pay but may be less viable in terms of a having a sustainable, steady job. Scan Craigslist or other job boards and you’ll find workfrom-home jobs calling for survey takers, English tutors, website testers, data entry, writers and editors, email or chat support positions, and search engine evaluators. some jobs range from game testing to searching for broken links on websites.) These jobs typically don’t include benefits and offer only short working stints.
Though technology has blurred the lines between home and work in some way, it’s a trade many of us are willing to make in return for an easier commute and improved work-life balance.
Freelancing and the gig economy More people, however, are opting for short-term work in addition to full-time employment or retirement. These individuals work short-term jobs either out of need, income supplement or pure passion. Globalization and improved technology have validated the freelance worker. Over the years, there has been an uptick in the number of
individuals freelancing (also known as on-demand work). In 2016, Intuit (makers of TurboTax) and Emergent Research conducted a study in which they noted 3.7 million people in the U.S. freelance. Their goal was to understand the behaviors of this population. In part, the recession of 2008 forced some people to find work however they could. On the other side of the telecommuting pendulum, the strengthening of the economy since then has given another segment of workers the financial confidence to let go of fulltime work in favor of freelancing. Forbes reported on the study and noted, “For a large number of participants in this labor market, signing up with on-demand platforms is an offensive move aimed at gaining greater financial security and/or greater satisfaction and control in their professional lives.” Freelancing means freedom. Tasks change and individuals can pick and choose what jobs to take. Understandably, this is easier said than done. For anyone who has attempted freelancing full time, landing jobs can be time-consuming and full of tests, searching and vetting and also the challenge of fulfilling your client requests. A more practical way to find freelance work is to specialize in a certain area, instead of trying to fit every job requirement exactly. While flexible jobs are growing, stitching together enough jobs to make a living off it alone takes time and may be difficult for some. Study participants listed that as one of their top challenges. So, while financial instability is a part of freelancing, it is more reliable as a supplement to full-time work.

freedom Tips and tricks of the flexible trades Working from home has come into acceptance in recent years, but for a long time it wasn’t an option except for a select few. Tradition and also trust have arguably kept companies and people in the 9-to-5 grind. That said, keeping the trust of those who hire you is important in getting more work. Checking in regularly is important as well as keeping a consistent schedule. Freelance jobs, though temporary, may keep you accountable for the length a job takes to complete. Many remote jobs will ask for an estimate of time and rate per job. You’ll have to become adept at estimating how long a project will take to complete, keeping in mind a margin for error. “One tip is that you must be able to understand intimately the various projects, what they take and how long they take to complete. Let’s face it, as many as there are honest hard workers, there are those that exist to try and ‘get one over.’ Therefore, if you know that it takes X amount of hours to do such and such, and you have an employee that is taking double the time, you have an issue,” said Denise Supplee.
Supplee has made a living as a realtor with Long & Foster, operations director at SparkRental and educator at Snaplandlord. Realtors have long been able to establish their own schedules, which she did while she launched Snaplandlord. To protect yourself and to know what’s expected of you, ask for a contract or something in writing (an email could suffice) about the workload. Last, keep in mind that you are responsible for your taxes, as freelance jobs typically do not set that aside for you. Get good tools. Do your research and find tools to help you manage and keep track of your billable time. Tools like the HiveDesk have calendars, task lists and discussion boards to communicate with your virtual team. Google has a similar tool. Or, use a good old-fashion spreadsheet. Whatever you choose, be diligent so you can properly invoice and be compensated. Where the virtual jobs are If you’re ready to become one of the 350,000 Americans that Forbes has cited doing ondemand work, again, do your research.

There are many job boards where some postings might be too good to be true. Try vetting companies before applying. A good place to start looking for freelance work are job boards such as FlexJobs, Upwork, Guru, Indeed and Real Ways to Earn Money Online. Consider also emailing companies you’d like to work for and networking on LinkedIn through friends and coworkers. Similar to LinkedIn is WAHspace, which is specifically geared to remote workers. Remote work benefits employers and workers As commutes lengthen and people live farther away from major cities, working remotely is a win for both companies and workers—whether full-time or on a freelance basis. It saves time commuting, which in turn reduces carbon emissions and also saves on the overhead costs of housing employees on a job site. And, finally, it gives workers a chance to be closer to family—even if it means working outside of the 9-to-5 schedule.

Coach Filkins, PHS
H
ead coach Ross Filkins is no stranger to Peninsula High School football fans. In his 22nd year at Peninsula High School, Filkins, who also serves as the school’s athletic director, started out as a 25-year-old head coach in 1995. Last year, the Peninsula High School football team went 10-2, losing to Meadowdale in the quarterfinals. “It was our fourth trip to the quarterfinals in the last five years,” said Coach Filkins of the team’s success. The football program does not cut players; consequently they have many players from each class, with freshmen being the largest this year and juniors being the smallest.
football,” he said. “We take pride in coaching every single kid.” While most classes are once a day with some outside homework, Coach Filkins said the football field is the greatest classroom setting there is and that he and his staff feel that Peninsula football is the toughest and most rewarding class the students will ever take. “It’s 24/7 and 365 [days], and we will never quit on our kids,” he said. “When they make the commitment to come out and represent our school, our community, their families, etcetera, that is very important. So we emphasize in teaching character in everything we do. We know that scores will fade in time, so we have a lot of fun and everything we do
“
For Filkins, serving as head coach is very rewarding. “I enjoy all the people I meet, and the student athletes are awesome. I’m getting older, but it makes me feel young and feels good to help them along the way, to compete and give back to the sport.”
Peninsula High School football’s success can in large part be attributed to the work ethic of the players. “Our players work really hard and put a lot of effort in during the off season and the summer,” said Coach Filkins. “And they love each other and play hard for each other.” THERE ARE SEVERAL KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH THIS SEASON INCLUDING QUARTERBACK BURKE GRIFFEN, WHO IS THE MOST IMPROVED RETURNING PLAYER; WIDE RECEIVER ALEX BELOATE, WHO COACH FILKINS SAID IS VERY QUICK AND A POLISHED ROUTE RUNNER; AND JOE WERON, WHO IS A RETURNING STARTER AT MIDDLE LINEBACKER.
will create lifelong memories.” Several things are sure to factor into what Coach Filkins sees as a successful upcoming year. “Our kids love to play the game and it shows. We return a wealth of experienced players, and our coaching staff has been together a long time and takes pride in putting players in a position to be successful.” For Filkins, serving as head coach is very rewarding. “I enjoy all the people I meet, and the student athletes are awesome. I’m getting older, but it makes me feel young and feels good to help them along the way, to compete and give back to the sport.” Mark your calendars!
“We have quite a few really good players though,” said Coach Filkins.

CHECK LIST Keep a Planner
Get organized Many schools provide students with a planner. If your school does not, head out to the store and make sure you have one before the year begins. Parents, encourage your kids to keep it with them at all times. Leaving it in their locker will do little to help them when they cannot remember an assignment. With sports, there will be days that are busier than others with out-of-town games, late practices and more. This is when it is extremely important to organize and budget your time. Plan to do homework ahead of schedule as time allows. Organization is the key to all success—in school, in sports and in life.
Schedule Time For Relaxation
Clear your mind While it is important to schedule homework, practice a sport or spend time with friends, also make sure to schedule time for sleep and relaxation. It is recommended that teenagers get at least nine hours of sleep, but many are lucky to get seven. Getting enough sleep will help teens focus better and make them better equipped to handle the stress of everyday life. Lack of sleep can lead to not only poor academic performance, but also poor performance in athletics as well. It is also important for teens to try to maintain some consistency with their sleep patterns, something that is not easy to achieve when they want to stay up late on the weekends.

how to balance your school work and extra curriculars
Organize Your Physical Space
Get back in the game Whether it is your gym locker or your bedroom, organizing one’s physical space can lead to easier transitions during a busy day. Have a specific place you keep your schoolbooks and homework. Keep your gym locker organized with everything you need for your given sport. (It saves mom from having to make a trip to deliver your equipment you forgot at home!) Before going to bed each night, make sure all that you need for your next day is ready to go. If you sleep through your alarm, you will be grateful for the extra few minutes you took the night before!
Take a Team Approach
Work together
Teamwork can be as important off the field as on the field. Surround yourself with likeminded people who share the same goals as you do. Do you share classes with some of your teammates? Plan study groups with them, as they likely share your same schedule. Do you like to workout? Schedule time for that with your friends as well. Setting your priorities and surrounding yourself with people who support that is important. In the end, you will find you are happier, less stressed and enjoying the life of school and sports.

Travel & Leisure
TRAVEL
Idaho
I’M TRAVELING, USUALLY on an airplane, when someone asks:
State Park, and is a center for Idaho-style recreation. I remember hearing McCall gets more snow than any other place in Idaho! And, there is no shortage of activities near McCall during the winter. Burgdorf Mountain hosts all sorts of activities, from skiing to snowshoeing, snowcat adventures to snow tubing. Burgdorf Hot Springs are accessible only by snowmobile in the winter, but you can drive in during the temperate seasons. After Memorial Day, McCall is an epic summer kind of town.
“Where are you from?” “Idaho.” I reply. “You live in Idaho? I didn’t know people actually live there! Isn’t that, like, just a big field of potatoes?” What can I say? Maybe this perception is good for us. We live in a beautiful place and enjoy our solitude. On the other hand, we are blessed to be surrounded by beautiful landscapes and hearty people. It’s not all potatoes. Next time you’re in my shoes, here are a few places worth telling people about:
The Selkirk Loop is a 280-mile stretch of road winding through Washington, Idaho and British Columbia. If you could choose one thing in this article to do, make it the Selkirk Loop. Along the way, you can enjoy just about everything you can imagine encountering in this part of the world. There are rivers, lakes and mountains—plenty of scenic views. As with McCall, the drive alone is worth the trip. But, with a little bit of planning, you can find great places to stay, eat, shop and find adventure. In any season, you are sure to find the outdoor experience you are looking for along the way.
McCall is surrounded by the Payette National Forest and wraps around the bottom of Payette Lake. Like many places in Idaho, the drive alone is worth the trip. Out of Boise, you head up 55, the Payette River Scenic Byway. The town is home to resorts, museums, restaurants and Ponderosa

Horseshoe Bend is a rural town about 30 minutes outside of Boise. Swimming, fishing, whitewater rafting, train rides and mountain biking are among the activities to be enjoyed there. The main attraction, in my humble opinion, is Zip Idaho—epic zipline and heli zipping! Yes, I said heli zipping, as in the combination of a zipline and a helicopter.
be overlooked as destinations in themselves. The real prize here, however, is Shoshone Falls. Believe it or not, Shoshone Falls are taller than Niagara falls by 45 feet (212’ to 167’), and, if my math is correct, Shoshone Falls is within the top 20 tallest falls in the United States. What they lack in height compared to some others they make up for in breadth!
The city of Cascade, Idaho, celebrates their centennial this year. Surely their staying power is a testament to the gorgeous setting. The town sits on the southeast end of Lake Cascade, or the Cascade Reservoir. The lake is a great place for camping, hiking, biking, swimming, boating and fishing. Cascade is also close to Brundage Mountain, offering more hiking and biking trails or skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing in the winter, and Gold Fork Hot Springs in Donnelly, Idaho.
Hells Canyon is a national recreation area in Riggins, Idaho. This canyon runs between Idaho and Oregon and is the deepest river gorge in North America! The area offers opportunities for scenic viewing, fishing, whitewater rafting and hiking. For those interested in taking in the sites of the region, the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway weaves along the Snake River to the Hells Canyon Dam. For scenic views, check out the Buckhorn, Hat point and Hells Canyon overlooks. For those seeking a view from the river, there are guided tours and other opportunities to get out on the water. Preserve is aptly named. The area encompasses more than 1,000 square miles and incorporates three separate lava fields. You will be hardpressed to find a better preserved area like it, showcasing the aftermath of volcanic activity. The result is a harsh but breathtaking landscape that is, as the name suggests, otherworldly. It is said that NASA used this area to prepare astronauts for the earliest moon landing. They later determined that the surface of our moon is very different. Whatever the case, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is readily accessible and has plenty of atmosphere. Hiking and cave exploration are excellent activities in the temperate months. In the winter, try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. It seems a list of places to visit in Idaho would not be complete without the Sawtooth Mountains. There is a pair of infamous towns close by, Sun Valley and Ketchum. You may know them as favored spots for the rich and famous, or, speaking of Ketchum in particular, as the last place Ernest Hemingway drew

Perhaps in contrast to the well-known Sawtooth Mountains, the lesser known Mullan Trail deserves a mention. Anyone who remembers the old Oregon Trail computer game knows what a hard business it is to make it this far West in a wagon. Diphtheria
and botched river crossings are just a few of the problems early settlers faced. The Mullan Road was constructed by the U.S. Army under the command of Lieutenant John Mullan. It enabled passage for the first wagon trains into the Pacific Northwest. Today, the route is traced by Interstate 90, but not exactly. That is to say, there is no way of knowing the exact route of the original Mullan Road. Part of the adventure here is to check out what lies just off the route and to attempt to piece together the puzzle yourself. Lastly, Lake Pend Oreille! Some of you are thinking, “Huh?” You’re right. Many readers live around this lake and already love it. But, how often do we become acquainted with only one aspect of something we love? And

when we learn that something we love has a different dimension and something new to offer us, how much more do we love it? That is the challenge. There is some part of this breathtaking, 148-square-mile lake you haven’t tried. Search out a new beach or landing, find a different swimming hole, go out on a kayak, try a stand-up paddle board, ski, wakeboard, pontoon—whatever you are used to doing, shake it up a bit. There you have it! Now, pick a place and get out there!

breath before taking his own life. The area is charged and the reason for attraction varies. One thing is for sure, the Sawtooth Mountains are a must see! Whether you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, arts and activities, lose yourself in the backcountry or slip quietly through the region along the Sawtooth Scenic Byway, the Sawtooth Mountains will not disappoint. There is so much to do in and around the mountains; I can safely recommend them as a destination for anyone with a pulse.

situation. Puree the tomatoes and put them into a large mixing bowl. (You should have about 10 cups.) • Wipe out the stock pot and heat the olive oil on a low heat. Add the garlic and crushed red pepper and cook over very low heat until soft (about 1 minute). • Add the tomato puree, basil and sugar and season to taste with salt and pepper. Simmer over low heat until the sauce is thickened and reduced to about 6 cups (about 2 hours). • Discard the basil and serve the sauce over your favorite pasta or use as dip for garlic bread!
• Strain the tomatoes and remove seeds. If you happen to have a food mill, it will work well in this
Heirloom Tomatoes are a variety of tomato that has been passed down from gardener to gardener. Unlike modern hybrid varieties, heirloom tomatoes come true from seed. They tend to have a later season harvest than other tomato varieties. The main reason to choose heirloom tomato varieties is the flavor. There’s no one taste; you’ll find a wide range of flavors in the heirloom-tomato world. But many of these varieties are prized for having an old-time taste—they’re very different than many modern tomato hybrids like ‘Better Boy’ or ‘Early Girl.’
