BACK TO REALITY … OR IS IT? HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? BEFORE WE KNEW IT, summer was gone! It is back to reality. But as we look back on all the great memories of these past few months, don’t forget to look ahead to the upcoming months as well. Just because summer is over does not mean the fun has to stop.
“WHERE FAMILY IS ALWAYS FIRST.”
In this issue, we highlight our local football teams and what is in store for the next few months. What can be better than the Friday night lights and cheering on your hometown team? Supporting our youth, whether you have children still in school or not, can take on many forms. Businesses provide financial support. Individuals volunteer time to coach. And, of course, there are the fans who attend the games, whether it is football, soccer, volleyball and more, to cheer on the athletes. If you have younger kids, it is always fun for them to go to games and see what sport may interest them as they grow older. Fall is also a time to get out and enjoy the cooler weather and the beautiful colors. There are hiking trails, bike trails and more that is fun for everyone to explore. Take

ParkS
The bucket list
STORY AND PHOTOS BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS
R
ecently, the National Park Service turned 100 years old. Thankfully, the Pacific Northwest boasts many of these outstanding national parks as well as the local ones we hold close to our heart.
our loved ones from their devices. Sometimes we forget that we are nature. When we step outside, take a deep breath, walk on a trail or paddle out on the water, we truly feel connected to ourselves, each other and our community around us.
First, let’s talk bucket list. The Cascadia Bioregion, bordering the Pacific Ocean, extends from lower Alaska through Canada, Washington, Oregon and Idaho to the uppermost parts of California and Nevada. According to Oregon Travel News, the must sees are: Crater Lake, North Cascades, Mount Rainier, Olympic, Glacier Bay, Redwood, Lewis and Clark, John Day, Oregon Caves, Fort Vancouver, San Juan Islands, Nez Perce, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Craters of the Moon, Sitka, Lake Roosevelt and Hagerman National Parks.
Parks and recreation districts provide us with a plethora of spaces to choose from close to home, from neighborhood parks to downtown scenic viewpoints to accessible docks and fishing piers, playgrounds, dog parks, skate parks, nature preserves, community pavilions and more. Our local parks allow us to commune with nature in all seasons.
Yes, summer is over and kids are back in school. On the upside, now is the time to plan next year’s adventures. It is also time to appreciate and evaluate the parks close to home; the ones we visit when not traveling.
It’s not hard to notice that Washington state’s population is growing. In fact, the Puget Sound Regional Council projects that the district’s residential population will slow and stabilize starting in 2020 with approximately 41,000 residents in 2025. With our latest growth, there is an even greater need for diverse recreational opportunities in regional parks, neighborhood parks, open spaces, special-use facilities and trail corridors.
In a world that is rapidly becoming more entwined in technology, we crave breaks from our screens and most definitely detaching
A handful of groups provide outdoor recreation parks and facilities in our area: federal, state, local, tribal, nonprofit and

Embrace the outdoors! private companies. In the city of Gig Harbor, there are more than 20 sites that provide opportunities from passive recreation through full-on activity zones. Located on the Gig Harbor Peninsula, PenMet Parks provides approximately 250 acres of developed parks and over 421 acres of undeveloped open space. Parks districts develop comprehensive plans both for the natural environment as well as the built. These plans take at least a year to create and aim to guide five years or more in advance. Public input is important and necessary for successful implementation. What gets built successfully without a great plan? In February of this year, after a year of development, PenMet Parks published their District Comprehensive Plan. If you think you know everything about Gig Harbor, think again. This valuable document explains so much and is available online at PenMetParks.org. Wondering how to get more involved? Which parks do you connect with, or wish you would, if only ‌? Find out what organizations run those parks. Have you thought
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
about improvements you would like to see at these sites or have a site in mind that could become a great public space? Speak up. Becoming a stakeholder in the comprehensive process allows you to participate in the planning process before decisions and plans are complete. Don’t be scared off by the term stakeholder. If you are a person with a passion, interest, concern or slightly to very opinionated, you, too, can be a stakeholder. For the commitment-phobic, attending public meetings is a very effective way to stay on top of what is currently happening in the district. You may sit there quietly, listen and observe, or be bold and voice your interests. If you can’t possibly find the time to sit on a committee or go to any meetings, reading up on plans online, signing up for email blasts or following social media will keep you in the know. When the urge reveals itself, call in by phone or write to the organization about your passionate pleas. You are nature; embrace the connection and dream of your next outdoor adventure.

THE NEW HOME OFFICE DESIGNING A FUNCTIONAL YET STYLISH WORKSPACE
BY ALINDA MORRIS, OWNER, ALINDA MORRIS INTERIOR DESIGN, LLC PHOTOS BY HAILEY ROSE CALDERA
I
f you are lucky enough to have a home office, that is wonderful. If not, you can create a home office out of a spare bedroom, a rarely used guest room or even a dining room. Ideally, a dedicated workspace is separate from the rest of the house. Determine how you are going to use the space Working from home offers flexibility and an opportunity for comfort and efficiency without the commute. Having a beautiful workspace will improve your productivity. This is true if you work from home full time or use the space for paying bills, maintaining your kids’ activity calendar or planning vacations. Consider how the space will be used. Do you work mainly online? Do you have specific storage requirements? Will clients be visiting the space? Will you be video conferencing? Give careful consideration to what you want to look at while you are working. Tips and Tricks: Keep it consistent. Select a soothing color for the space. The color palate should work well with the rest of the home creating a cohesive vocabulary of finishes. Your home office should reflect the design and comfort of the rest of your home.
3016 Harborview Drive Gig Harbor WA
Scale and circulation. Floating the desk in the center of the space can create a focal point. Make sure you have enough room to walk around the room comfortably. Allow 36 inches walking space around a desk if possible and at least 30 inches between your desk and a credenza/file cabinet. On the other side of the desk, allow 48 to 60 inches for additional chairs and tables. Mix it up. An upholstered chair is elegant but functional and will help the space feel less like an office. Layering rugs can help anchor the space. Incorporating texture is a great way to add dimension and visual interest. You may want to update the light fixture with a more modern, stylish design. Choose furniture that can help camouflage the functional nature of the space. If hiring a professional is in your budget, do it! It can save you time and money later.

Pay attention to scale. You may be dreaming of an elegant home office with a large freestanding desk. The built-in credenza and shelves hold a computer, files and books. Consider the size of your space. Most desk systems like the ever-popular L-shaped system sold at most office box stores have a lot of visual weight and can overwhelm the space.

Stress?
BRINGING YOUR PET TO WORK CAN HELP
awareness of the physical, mental and emotional toll taken by stress is leading progressive employers to create takeyour-pet-to-work programs. As more and more companies adopt a pets-at-work policy, consider these facts based on a recent Purina report about the many advantages of such programs: • They can benefit health: Pet-employee interaction has been shown to reduce the employee’s blood pressure and cholesterol levels in addition to alleviating anxiety. • They can improve employee retention: Sixty-three percent of employees in pet-friendly workplaces say they're very satisfied with their work environments—nearly twice as many as those in other workplaces. In fact, respondents rank the option of bringing pets at work as the second most-valuable employee perk—more valuable than free coffee and parking. Overall, three in five survey participants wish their workplace would institute a pet-friendly policy. (BPT) - IF YOU'VE EVER FELT TENSE, ANXIOUS OR SIMPLY UNABLE TO RELAX WHILE PERFORMING YOUR JOB, YOU'RE FAR FROM ALONE. A recent survey by the American Institute of Stress found 80 percent of U.S. workers across industries have felt stress in the workplace; nearly half say they could use help dealing with it and 42 percent said their coworkers could use some relief. To the delight of animal lovers everywhere, awareness of the physical, mental and emotional toll taken by stress is leading progressive employers to create take-your-pet-to-work programs. For example, for the past 20 years, Purina has encouraged its associates to bring their pets to work, and in a typical week hundreds of dogs and cats enjoy spending time with their owners at the pet food maker's St. Louis campus. "Pets bring a wealth of benefits—both physical and emotional—to pet owners and their families, so it's no surprise those same benefits also apply to the workplace and employees," notes Dr. Kurt Venator, Purina's chief veterinary officer. "Whether a pet helps provide a calming sense during a challenging situation or encourages employees to take a walk during their lunch break, here at Purina we experience the benefits of pets at work every day and want others to as well."

• They can alleviate loneliness: Eight in 10 employees who can bring pets to work say that activity makes them feel more happy, relaxed and sociable. That's partly because talking about pets can be an ice breaker, making it easier for people to approach co-workers and get to know them better. • They can promote physical activity: Many employees spend breaks and lunchtime playing with their pets or taking them for walks, boosting their own aerobic activity at the same time. • They can increase pets’ happiness: Rather than staying home waiting for their owners to arrive, pets get to socialize with new people, play with other pets and enjoy more activity. Nearly nine of 10 people in the survey agree that bringing their pets to work strengthens owner-pet bonding. In light of the proven benefits, Purina encourages other employers to consider allowing pets in the workplace. A toolkit with tips and information is provided at Purina.com. “Our goal with our report is to continue to raise awareness of the benefits of taking pets to work and to arm employees and employers with insights that can help facilitate pet-friendly environments within their companies,” notes Dr. Venator.

our brain is “wired” to keep you safe. There’s a walnut-size structure near the center of your brain called the amygdala. Its job is to protect you. It’s a gatekeeper, and it blocks information that might do you harm—or take too much of your precious
When you feel frustrated, stuck or overwhelmed by change, your amygdala is doing its job. It’s busy keeping you safe. That happens behind the scenes. Imagine how bothersome it would be to weigh in on your existing beliefs every time you make a decision. We don’t, so our “limiting beliefs” are mostly under the radar.
What kind of information do you suppose your amygdala tends to let in? It loves the familiar. The logic is something like this: “Right now, you’re safe. If nothing changes, you’ll be safe in five minutes. If nothing changes, you’ll be safe in an hour.” If nothing changes, you’ll be safe. The amygdala is the part of the brain that says, “I wouldn’t go there if I were you.”
Jeremy was a successful sales representative for an RV business. In fact, his sales exceeded the next closest rep by almost double. He earned a promotion to sales manager and was sent to a leadership training; however, Jeremy’s sales stalled under his leadership. Unaccustomed to missing his sales goals, Jeremy was quite frustrated as fall approached. The owner wondered if promoting Jeremy was a mistake. How could someone so skilled as a sales rep and so motivated to succeed consistently miss his goals as sales manager?
attention.
No wonder change can be difficult at times. Your brain really is wired for the status quo. Your brain is complex, so it’s not all about the amygdala. When new information gets past the gatekeeper, it competes with the familiar. Guess which gets higher priority. Yes, what you already know. New information is more likely to “stick” when it’s emotionally charged or repeated. Then your brain changes to absorb new information. These changes are called neuroplasticity. Amygdala. Neuroplasticity. What does brain science have to do with you and your success?

Jeremy decided to invest in coaching. He knew he could succeed as a sales manager, but it was like he was managing in a fog. He couldn’t see what was missing. When we started our work together, I helped him explore the shift in mindset from a sales representative to a sales manager. I asked him a series of questions, including, “Who is your client?” Jeremy described the families who buy RVs. “What if that’s not your client?” I asked. His eyes sparkled with recognition. “Oh, it’s my sales reps,” he said. That shift in perspective changed everything. He re-designed his approaches to training, and in a short time, his team responded to his leadership and sales increased.
A professional coach asks questions that tame the amygdala and lift the fog. When you see clearly, you know which steps to take and your pace accelerates. One shift in perception made a huge difference. Jeremy enjoyed change and was open to learning; nevertheless, his amygdala “protected” him from new information and didn’t challenge the information he’d counted on for his success as a sales representative. I’ve seen this over and over. What creates success at one level needs to change to be successful at the next level.

Reading Companion Program pairs young readers with man’s best friend
BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS COURTESY OF COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF PENINSULA

n Wednesdays this school year, students at Minter Creek Elementary will be seeing a four-legged visitor roaming the halls. Brody was the new kid on the block last year but is ready once again to help local kids with their reading skills. The 4-year-old golden retriever, alongside owner Jeff Essayan, are the first pet therapy team to participate in the pilot Tutors with Tails reading program, which pairs certified therapy dogs with children learning to read on the Gig Harbor Peninsula. The program was set into motion last year with collaboration between Communities In Schools of Peninsula and the Peninsula School District. “Recently I saw a wonderful story on the national news about a dog reading program, and it sparked my interest in starting a model program in our neck of the wood,” said Cathy Wood, volunteer coordinator and development assistant at Communities In Schools of Peninsula. The mission for Brody and the Tutors with Tails program is to help students who might be

struggling with reading skills or reading aloud to gain the confidence and skills to do so in a fun environment. “There is so much research revealing the positive benefits of pet therapy,” said Minter Creek Elementary principal, Ty Robuck. “In just a few short weeks, our students have already shown improvement and enjoyment in reading, and we are excited to see their continued literacy growth.” Using animals for therapy is a growing and accepted form of treatment in many circles. Horse therapy is prescribed often for those who have experienced a violent or troubling event as the calmness of the animal is helpful in soothing one’s emotions. Hospitals bring therapy animals in to visit sick or injured patients as well as family members and caretakers who are under stress. Several prison systems across the country have inmates preparing to be released take care of animals in order that they might remember kindness and responsibility after having to be in survival mode for years in a prison setting.

The mission for Brody and the Tutors with Tails program is to help students who might be struggling with reading skills or reading aloud to gain the confidence and skills to do so in a fun environment. Animals do not judge humans based upon looks, background or beliefs, and dogs especially offer great devotion to those who would give them attention and treat them well. The same is now being applied to schools across the country as well-trained dogs serve as a calming and fun presence to children. Developing reading skills is very important for kids this age, however, the social-emotional impact is equally as important. Children in the program are excited to be included in this special program and this, in turn, makes them feel special. The bond that is formed between the dog and the child is the catalyst for acceptance, which spurs a positive learning environment. When Brody appears, he lights up the room and children are eager to meet and greet their favorite weekly visitor. He lavishes in the attention and is quick to find his place on his own blanket-covered pad as children gather around to read stories. The dramatic academic and emotional improvement seen in students participating in pet therapy programs such as Tutors with Tails is no coincidence. Canine companions meet
kids on their own terms, allowing learning to occur in a non-judgmental atmosphere. At Minter Creek Elementary, children believe it is their duty to teach Brody the story and how to read when in fact the kids are teaching themselves.
“We are excited about this new program and are grateful to Communities In Schools of Peninsula for their leadership in bringing this creative and exciting opportunity to our kids,” said Rob Manahan, Peninsula School District superintendent.
“It is so gratifying to see the powerful bond children have with Brody and how their confidence in reading skyrockets” said Jeff. “My favorite part of the day is hearing the kids say, ‘I love you Brody,’ at the end of the reading session.”
While Brody is currently the only certified therapy dog, the plan is to expand the program quickly. “We are in the process of recruiting additional certified therapy dog teams and hope to expand the Tutors with Tails reading program to at least three additional schools this year,” said Rich. The hope is to include an additional Key Peninsula school and two elementary schools in the Gig Harbor area.
Program founder Cathy Rich has seen firsthand these interactions and also heard glowing reviews from local teachers. “In the first 10-week session, third and fourth grade students involved in the program have shown dramatic academic and social-emotional improvement. Not only have their reading and communication skills improved, but there has been an increased sense of confidence, emotional well-being and happiness at school, according to their teachers,” she said. Brody is a certified therapy animal, and along with Jeff, have gone through a rigorous training program through Pet Partners International.

“I would love to see therapy dog in all of the schools that we serve, including elementary, middle and high school. Everyone loves dogs, and the calming effects that occur when kids get to interact with an animal cannot be measured,” said Rich. You can visit the Tutors with Tails reading program on Wednesdays from 12:45 to1:45pm. Please contact Cathy Rich at 253.884.5733 or cathy@cisofpeninsula.org to make arrangements.
TEACHER OF THE MONTH
Brad Collins BY COLIN ANDERSON
"The lesson I will take from this it that it is often better to step back and resist the temptation to micromanage students—let them explore and take their work to new levels."
S
eptember’s teacher of the month has 20 years’ experience and in those 20 years has felt just about every emotion one can think of. “A teacher’s day is never dull. Some experiences are funny, some are scary, some are infuriating and some will bring you to tears,” says Brad Collins. Thankfully for Collins, a lifelong passion for being an educator brings more joyous days than negative ones. Collins has been at Peninsula High School the past nine years teaching various science courses to grades ninth through 12th. These included chemistry, AP and standard biology, and more recently a four-year biomedical science program geared toward preparing for a health career. Classes in this program include principles of biomedical science, human body systems, medical interventions, and biomedical innovations and health careers. “I really enjoy helping kids learn science in general, but I especially love helping them learn all the amazing things about the human body, what can go wrong with it and how we try to fix problems that arise,” says Collins. The biomedical innovations class was introduced this past school year, which gave Collins a unique opportunity with a very small group of seniors. The class is a research and design class meant to give students a lot of time
for individual work. In the end they wouldn’t be presenting to class but rather an assembled group of community members. “I gave the students some guidelines about their projects but intentionally left them without much guidance and probably with a fair amount of stress,” recalls Collins. While this made him nervous, the final result was a surprise even to this seasoned educator. “The students went so far above what I expected that I was blown away. The audience was in such awe of the level of depth and creativity that the students showed that they were speechless.” Even after two decades in the profession, Collins is still learning from his students. “The lesson I will take from this is that it is often better to step back and resist the temptation to micromanage students—let them explore and take their work to new levels,” he says. Collins says it is easy to fall into the trap of trying to rise up to the expectations and dreams of others. It is also easy to get caught up in the tedium of day-to-day tasks and forget what is important. But his best life lesson to share is to be true to yourself and find passion in your life. “To be truly happy, you have to follow you own dreams and pursue things that make you happy and give you joy. Make time for yourself and have a little fun!”

Northwest Mortgage Services, his service and commitment to his clients has stood the test of time. Abel relocated from San Diego, California, in 2014 and joined Jeff at Northwest Mortgage earlier this year. “We have withstood many market swings over the last 30 years; the most notable was the financial crisis of 2008,” says Jeff. “While many mortgage brokers and bankers folded and closed, we were able to survive the downturn and thrive. The best measure of our success is the referral of the children of our early clients.” Whether you are buying a home or refinancing, Jeff and Abel will help you realize your dream of homeownership or save you money when getting your new lower monthly payment. “We feel our success is rooted in our policy of putting the needs of our clients first. Home loan financing is complex and can be costly. We pride ourselves in making sure that our borrowers are fully informed prior to looking for homes,” Jeff says. “We review their financial circumstances and place their loan with the loan program that best meets their needs.”
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
At Northwest Mortgage Services, when a client’s credit scores are below the minimum lending guidelines and a loan is not possible, Jeff and Abel take the time to educate their clients as to the importance of maintaining good credit and how credit scores affect the cost of obtaining a loan. They walk them through the steps to raise the scores so they can purchase a home. “Sometimes this process takes months to complete, but we will do what it takes to help our clients become successful home owners,” adds Jeff. When it comes to what the most rewarding aspect of their business is, they agree—helping young home buyers purchase their first home. As U.S. Army veterans, Jeff and Abel are proud to support the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation, an organization in Gig Harbor that funds healing opportunities for all veterans. They also support Easter Seals Camp Stand By Me in Vaughn, which provides camp experiences and respite care for children and adults with disabilities. If you are in the market to refinance or purchase a new home, look no further than Northwest Mortgage Services, where Jeff and Abel are ready to serve you.

As a father of four and a local business leader, John has decided the focus of his personal and business charitable contributions will go to programs that encourage, feed, help and foster the young and potentially vulnerable.
The largest and most fun fundraiser done each year is the annual Peninsula Auto Group Kids Classic Golf Tournament, held at the Canterwood Golf and Country Club. The word “tournament” is used lightly as this is a very noncompetitive event that has more of a party-like atmosphere than a competition.
John Dionas is a name well known to many in the community. Having lived in Gig Harbor for 25 years, and owning his dealership for 18, many have purchased vehicles from John and his

eninsula Subaru owner John Dionas knows that despite living in an affluent and beautiful place, you don’t have to look very far to find people struggling day to day. “If you drive just 10 minutes from our community, you will see some of the poorest neighborhoods around where kids are suffering every day,” said John.

While admittedly not an avid golfer himself, John has grown to really love the event and has carved his own niche on tournament day. Playing host doesn’t leave much time for golf, so after making hundreds of phone calls and reminders leading up to the big day, John has decided to spend his day in the cart. “I make the introduction and get the tournament started in the morning, and the rest of the day I’m pretty much driving around in the cart with a cold beverage, shaking hands, thanking people and making sure they are having a great time,” said John. The Kids Classic begins with lunch and registration, and play begins at 1pm. There are raffle tickets for items that in the past have included roundtrip airfare, diamond jewelry,

theatre tickets, Seahawks merchandise and outdoor living supplies. Now in its 16th year, the event has become a local favorite not just for family and friends but John’s employees as well. “We have 95 employees and almost all golf, come out for lunch or contribute financially. I’m proud that they donate what they can, $5, $10, $50, $100—it all helps.” The Kids Classic is meant to be a fun Friday out of the office, but its purpose serves a much bigger function than simple entertainment. The thousands of dollars raised each year support organizations who work tirelessly to improve local communities and impact potential at-risk youth. John has chosen three organizations to benefit from the Classic: Children’s Home
Society of Washington, Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank and Community Services, and Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Children’s Home Society of Washington operates the Key Peninsula Family Resource Center in Vaughn. The center offers early learning and family support programs. New parents will find a safe place for their children to learn and play in groups, attend preschool and have parentfocused classes as well. Family support groups offer the tools to raise healthy and happy children including mentoring groups for elementary, middle and high school students, basic needs like diapers, school supplies and clothing, and a host of referral services for those in need of additional or specific assistance.

FISH is located in Gig Harbor and is most wellknown as an emergency food bank, but the organization offers many additional programs to help those who are struggling. Clothing for both adults and children are donated, financial assistance to help pay for a month’s utilities, rent or prescription medication, counseling and van transportation to doctor visits are all available here. Every Christmas John and his family volunteer here and donate food. Last year he was touched by the work that was being done and decided to pony up for a brand new van so FISH can deliver seniors to appointments, transport food and get kids to where they need to go as well. He knows that by having his children see the importance of volunteering and donating that they will continue the example he has set for them.
THE KIDS CLASSIC IS MEANT TO BE A FUN FRIDAY OUT OF THE OFFICE, BUT ITS PURPOSE SERVES A MUCH BIGGER FUNCTION THAN SIMPLE ENTERTAINMENT. THE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS RAISED EACH YEAR SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS WHO WORK TIRELESSLY TO IMPROVE LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND IMPACT POTENTIAL AT-RISK YOUTH. “My kids know it’s a big deal for me, our family, our company, and if I’m gone tomorrow I know they’ll continue doing it,” said John.
comes around, you just need to do the right thing, right? I mean, why not?” said John.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of America is a large national organization but makes immediate impact in communities throughout the Puget Sound. There are branches in Bremerton, Gig Harbor, South Pierce County, Lakewood, Tacoma, North Mason and South Kitsap. Children are shaped by observing the adults in their lives, and the mission of the Boys and Girls Club is to enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The Boys and Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound is serving on average over 1,300 youth each day at 14 sites in Pierce, Mason and Kitsap counties and in partnership with seven school districts.
There are still slots available for the 16th annual Kids Classic Golf Tournament, which will be held on Friday, September 21. Your participation fee gets you 18-holes and a cart, lunch and beverages with all proceeds benefiting these local organizations. senior at Gig Harbor High School, Jurrian Hering has excelled in both athletics and academics.
He was named all-conference cornerback in football and has offers from both Brigham Young University and the Air Force Academy. But it is not just football where Jurrian shows his athletic talent. He has received many honors in track as well including: GHHS Track and Field Freshman of the year (2016); GHHS Men’s Track and Field MVP (2017,2018); South Sound Conference Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year (2018); and 110 Meter Hurdles 3A State Champion. “I’ve received offers from Idaho, Air Force and WestPoint,” said Jurrian, who also has a

3.4 GPA and is enrolled in AP classes. Jurrian said he would like to run track in college, although he would be OK with playing football, too. He is currently undecided as to what school he will attend, but areas of interest when it comes to a career include criminal justice, counterterrorism, psychology and sociology. “I would like to become an FBI agent,” he said. “I want to be part of a cause bigger than me, and I feel the FBI would do just that. Making not only my country, but even my personal community safer, has great appeal to me. I do have a not-so-secret desire to compete in the Olympics one day. I love hurdling and am not ready to stop striving for improvement there. I haven’t reached my peak by any means.”
THE MONTH While sports have provided many amazing moments for Jurrian, it has not been without challenges. “The biggest challenge I have experienced in sports was when I was a sophomore running track. It was about mid-season, and I had not been performing to the caliber that I believe I should have, and going into the Shelton Invitational I had put too much pressure on myself to perform in fear that I would disappoint my coach and my family,” explained Jurrian. “At the start of the meet, in the 110-meter hurdle race, I hit a hurdle and fell mid-race and couldn’t finish. It was embarrassing, and I felt defeated. I overcame this selfimposed mental block by coming to the realization that the pressure I had put on myself wasn’t really there at all. It was just a figment of my mind and that I control my thoughts, so I made them more positive, more successful. Later that season, I placed second in the 110 hurdles at the state meet. The lesson that I learned from this was invaluable. It was that life’s going to knock you down and you have to get right back up and keep pushing, because if you put in the work there’s something great waiting for you.” Jurrian goes on to share that what he loves most about both track and football is the competition. “I love being able to go head-to-head with another athlete, compete and show my abilities. I love the mutual respect that comes from a race well done or a great play. I also love competition with myself.” He is grateful to his track coach, Kevin Eager, who he said has taught him the importance of focus in everything he does. “With focus, I believe it’s important to engage in positive self-talk and accurate self-evaluation,” Jurrian said. “He has shown me that when you are focused on the goal, even when adversity comes knocking, you must never lose sight of that

TREATING ADDICTION RECOVERY CENTER CLOSE TO REALITY BY COLIN ANDERSON
T
he late ‘90s and early 2000s brought a methamphetamine epidemic across the nation. While still a major problem, law enforcements eradication of local mobile labs and legislation to minimize purchasing its ingredients reduced its impact. Addicts, however, don’t just stop using once a drug is tougher to get. Prescription opioids and heroin are the new No. 1 killer in all corners of America. Those dedicating their lives to ridding the world of these poisons know that getting drugs off the street is only one part of a much bigger battle.
“I was involved in a motorcycle club and in the drug trade at a very high level,” said Saucier. In 1998, he was indicted by a federal jury, sentenced to 10 years in prison and ended up serving eight and a half. Prison will change a person, sometimes for the better and often for the worse, and Saucier was determined not to come out the same person as he came in. During his time, he took advantage of all the counseling and mental health programs available to him. He was eventually singled out by a minister for one-on-one sessions. “I made a promise to God that if he could get me through this that I would spend the rest of my life giving back,” said Saucier.
Jeremiah Saucier started as a counselor at Crossroads Treatment Center in 2009. Today he owns and runs the facility, something deemed near impossible considering the path he was on earlier in life.

“I MADE A PROMISE TO GOD THAT IF HE COULD GET ME THROUGH THIS THAT I WOULD SPEND THE REST OF MY LIFE GIVING BACK,” SAID SAUCIER. and eventually landing a job at the Crossroads Treatment Center in Lakewood. Hearing and seeing firsthand the suffering that drug and alcohol abuse has on his community has lead Saucier to another goal of opening a full-service center built upon treating addicts in a unique way. “Some people need 30, 60, 90 days to get to where they need to be. It’s all different,” explained Saucier. “At Hope Recovery Center, we will create a co-occurring facility where we treat both the dependency side and the mental health side.” The 501c3 nonprofit was formed in 2015, and Saucier, along with other impassioned community members, have been getting the word out and drumming up support through monthly open meetings and discussions with local law enforcement, medical and mental health professionals. All agree—the need for such a facility exists. “I asked a group of about 100 people to stand if they had been directly impacted by drug or alcohol abuse, and not one person was left sitting,” Saucier said.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
Design of the Hope Recovery Center calls for a 50-bed inpatient facility with access to all kinds of experts. Lakebay Community Church has offered up its land on which to build the center, and the organization is currently in the process of getting the building permits approved through Pierce County. Once the permitting is approved, a capital campaign will jump start the project with construction to begin soon after. Designs for the building were done by an architect pro-bono, as was the creation of the 501c3 by an accountant, saving the organization a great cost. Saucier is a runner, and he notices just how bad drug abuse in the area is while on his jogs. He has a shoebox full of needles at home that he’s picked up along his route; some he found less than 50 yards from an elementary school. “Drugs respect no person. It doesn’t matter your gender, race, beliefs, income—they don’t care,” he said. Through his own personal experience and watching others struggle with their addictions, Saucier sees two issues that he hopes to help resolve

as part of the Hope Recovery Center’s treatment program: the effects of abuse at a young age and skill training for those who are ready to join the workforce but might not even have a high school diploma. “I’ve seen kids that started using heroin at 12 or 13 years old. They have no life or job skills, and the deck is stacked against them from the start,” said Saucier. He says some addicts are scared of becoming clean because they don’t think they could interact and relate to people in the “normal” world. Showing addicts that they are stronger than the drug and that their life has meaning can make all the difference in a person’s life. “Someone saw value in me, and you cannot put a price tag on any human life,” said Saucier. Once completed, the Hope Recovery Center will be a place for addicts to receive treatment for their drug or drugs of choice, have access to mental health counselors, be partnered with job trainers and taught skills, and shown the value of a life worth living free of dependency. While there is not a set date for construction, you can receive the latest updates via email by visiting Hope-Recovery.org.

community foundation bringing people together to work toward healthy, thriving and sustainable communities across the greater Gig Harbor and Key Peninsulas, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation (GGHF) puts philanthropy into action in five core areas. These include arts and culture, education, parks and environment, recreation and social capital. In 2013, the Foundation’s Parks & Environment CAB were considering a major event to raise funds that would facilitate achieving its goals, and Julie Ann Gustanski, one of GGHF’s five founding members, board member and Cider Swig chair, came up with an idea. While traveling back from a trip to the East Coast, she read an article about the rebirth of cider and festivals being held in Pennsylvania and elsewhere to celebrate it. “With over 25 years of working to protect agricultural lands, familiarity with orchards and a love of hard cider inspired by a decade of living in Scotland and knowledge of the state’s apple industry, I proposed the idea of a cider festival,” says Julie. “The rest is history. The CAB liked the idea and we were off to naming the event. Through a collective brainstorming process, we arrived at the Cider Swig - The Greater Peninsula Cider Festival.”

Mark your calendars for the 2018 Cider Swig—one of the largest cidercentered festivals in the state—which takes place Saturday, September 29, noon to 5pm at Sehmel Homestead Park. Attendees will find Northwest cidermakers with nearly 100 ciders (and relatives) on hand to taste. “The Apple Carnivàle returns, replete with street artists, performers, an array of carnival games, an inflatable obstacle course, face painting, Apple Launching, cider demonstrations/talks by area experts, and more!” says Julie. And new this year—the third annual Apple Pie Contest will take main stage with local celebrity judges during the “Battle of the Pies.” Though festival entry is free, tickets are required for cider sampling in the Cider Garden. Each ticket includes five drink tokens (additional cider tokens are available at the festival), a 6-ounce festival tasting glass and access to all live music and entertainment, food, the Apple Carnivàle Zone and other festival activities. While the adults enjoy time in the Cider Garden and other festival activities, kids ages 2 through 12 can have fun of their own at the Applet Drop-Off Activity Center, where they can play games, create art and have a blast in a safe, clean environment. Purchased in advance, the fee is $8 per child per hour or $10 the day of the event. The activity center is operated by staff

from the GGHF Curious by Nature School. Kids receive a swag bag with a drink, snack and other goodies. With only 1,500 tickets available, advanced ticket purchase is strongly encouraged, as the event sells out each year. Cider Garden tickets are priced $28 (through September 14) and $35 (September 15 through the day of the event). For those interested in volunteering, tickets are just $18 each. Through the Cider Swig, the Foundation works toward achieving goals of protecting, preserving and sustaining the environment, cultural and personal health of the greater peninsula communities. According to Julie, “The Cider Swig is about much more than sumptuous cider, great music, food and having a wonderful day at the park with family and friends. Since 2014, festival proceeds have provided over $40,000 for environmental education programs, watershed conservation and enhancement projects, and other efforts that support area parks and trails through the Lu Winsor Environmental Grant Program (GigHarborFoundation.org/Lu-WinsorEnvironmental-Grant).” Purchase your tickets today to enjoy amazing ciders, great food, music and fun, all while supporting a worthy cause.

Starting in the mid-1960s, alternators came into common use replacing generators. The old generators were notorious for not charging at idle and low rpm. So when you jump started someone, you connected cables and revved your motor to up the voltage for the jump. The power stored in the battery reserve was much less as well.
Licensed, Bonded & Insured
Current batteries are more powerful and alternators charge great at idle, but the most important factor to take into consideration is the electronic systems in your car. Starting in 1980, cars got computers that controlled overall emissions levels. By 2010 cars have six to 12 onboard computers. If you connect your car to a vehicle with electrical problems, there is a strong possibility that you could import a problem into your system.

Nutrition myths that won’ t seem to go away
This is part one of a two-part series
By Kenny Markwardt, CSCS LET’S FACE IT, THERE ARE MANY MYTHS WHICH SURROUND OUR HEALTH. It’s not always easy to distinguish fact from fiction. Below I hope to clear up some of the confusion for you!
fat and carbohydrate, but specifically trying to remove any is just misguided.
Carbs Are Bad
Before people were afraid of carbohydrates, they were afraid of fat. Even though the height of that wave was nearly two decades ago, the idea that fat is bad has still hung on fairly strong. Again, as with carbohydrates, fat is a very important part of a well-rounded diet. Your body needs fats for healthy hormone production and maintenance, so eliminating fats entirely is not a good idea either. I’ll say it again; weight loss is going to be a factor of calories in versus calories out, not because a certain macronutrient is making them fat.
Fat is Bad
I wrote about this subject recently, so I won’t go too far into this again, but contrary to current popular belief, carbohydrates are not inherently bad for you. Carbohydrates have a very important place in a well-rounded nutrition plan. They are your body’s preferred source of energy, especially in highintensity activities such as exercise. Eliminating carbohydrates because it’s the latest fad to do is unfounded. Weight loss is—and always will be—a factor of calories in versus calories out. Carbohydrates specifically are not the reason anyone is overweight. Study after study has shown that macronutrient ratio is not a factor in overall weight loss. There are pros and cons to each of protein,
Protein is Bad There’s a bit of a theme going here, but I think they’re all worth addressing.

SNACK PACK It’s back to school time! If you are packing snacks for your kids, here is a perfect opportunity to include at least one fruit and veggie. Smart snacks include fresh fruit (apple, pear and bananas), Greek yogurt, nuts, baby carrots with hummus, roasted edamame and, of course, a bottle of water.

I’LL SAY IT AGAIN; WEIGHT LOSS IS GOING TO BE A FACTOR OF CALORIES IN VERSUS CALORIES OUT, NOT BECAUSE A CERTAIN MACRONUTRIENT IS MAKING THEM FAT.
Gig Harbor Chiropractic & Massage www.GigHarborWellness.com
In general, most people are aware of the fact that protein intake is an important factor in any nutrition plan, but there are voices out there proclaiming that too much protein is bad for you, specifically in the realm of kidney health. This is largely due to one study that was later disproved. Protein is essential for tissue repair and overall health. Because of the available sources of protein, it is typically very hard to overeat, so it is generally a good idea to make protein intake your primary or secondary (after vegetables) goal for every meal of the day. Salt is Bad This is an interesting one, as salt’s relationship to hypertension and kidney damage is typically more a correlation than causation. Salt itself is a very important mineral to maintain in your diet, so trying to eliminate it altogether is not a good idea. However, most highly processed foods are high in sodium, and most people who tend to eat highly processed foods have a penchant for other unhealthy foods that cause high blood pressure and kidney damage. So, though salt and high sodium intake seems to be a causation for people diagnosed with hypertension and poor kidney health, the takeaway is not to put down the salt shaker so much as it is to put down the hot dogs and potato chips. Gluten is Bad Gluten’s evil has been propagated more and more lately, but as with the others above, it’s just not inherently bad, and while eliminating it has caused a great deal of people to lose weight and
feel better, the reason they saw those results was not due to gluten itself but more because they were overeating the foods that gluten is found in. By eliminating gluten, you typically find yourself eating more meat and vegetables and therefore eat less processed foods, less sugar, drink less alcohol and overall eat less calories. Certainly, there are people with gluten intolerances or Celiac Disease, and those are very real issues. But not everyone needs to or should bother trying to eliminate gluten entirely. Detoxes are Important and Effective Oh boy, if gluten’s relationship to the devil isn’t my favorite thing to roll my eyes at, it’s detoxes and cleanses. These are some of the most incredibly popular and perpetuated scams around, and I applaud the creativity and gusto that must go into the creation of these ideas. It amazes me that in the day and age of the Internet, people still think these are effective or a good idea. Unfortunately, the vast majority (and possibly entirety) of detox supplement companies cannot even define or label the specific toxins they are targeting. Certainly, there are things that enter the body that are harmful and should be eliminated. The great thing is that we already have very powerful and effective tools for that task—the liver, kidneys and lungs. All of which greatly benefit from a well-rounded, nutritious diet, not a drastic elimination of all foods and a short-term introduction of lemonade, juices, apple cider vinegar or anything else. Eat a wellbalanced diet, and you’ll be fine.

Find Your State of Balance CAN REST BE A HEALTHIER OPTION THAN A WORKOUT? BY JENNIFER WIGGLESWORTH
W
hen one thinks about optimizing one’s health, working out and eating right come to mind first and foremost. What if we began to look at health differently, with a more mindful approach? This can be mind-blowing at first, but research demonstrates how beneficial moments of quiet can be for one’s health. Rest and deeper awareness of the mind’s connection to the body may possibly be just as, if not more, important than the high-energy workouts one is typically drawn to.
effects the exercises have within the mindto-body connection. For example, poses like Shavasana lead students to release their minds of all thoughts to deeper connect to a state of restfulness and relaxation within their bodies.
High-intensity workouts remain to be a handsdown amazing way to formulate a healthy lifestyle. They raise heart rates, burn calories and create overall muscular strength. These workouts provide instant endorphin rushes and can be extremely addicting. Overall, these workouts are positive, and undeniably effective, ways to be healthy. However, more often than not, these workouts formulate around ideas of “getting it done.” When framed this way, the mind views the workout as another task to do rather than a crucial part of one’s lifestyle. Although there’s nothing wrong with this, creating balance of workout with mind-body connections can be more beneficial overall.
A restful getaway is a healthy way to let go, focus on breathing and release the mind of busyness. Although some vacations spiral into more work than one’s actual life, focusing on wellness can be a healthy way to transcend. A retreat that harnesses health and wellness, where rest and relaxation are in mind, are the getaways that promote a healthy rest and relaxation process. These retreats are like life’s “breath of fresh air.” They take one away from day-to-day life into a place of serenity, almost above what seems natural. And, who doesn’t desire that?
Reframing one’s view toward an everyday workout can add value to what one’s currently doing, and possibly be even healthier. Instead of simply getting it done, it’s important to create intentional awareness of opening the mind and connecting the breath to the body. Workouts that traditionally exhibit this practice, like yoga and Pilates, are known for the powerful

The workout arena is simply one environment where rest toward a healthier lifestyle can be found. Vacations or retreats allow for another form of rest and relaxation. Depending on the vacation or retreat, a getaway can be just what the body needs.
As previously mentioned, by reframing health in lieu of rest and lifestyle rather than a daily push of high intensity, one may gain a healthier overall life. Balance is always key. It is important to find an exercise that make sense for one’s life, as well as healthy eating plans that work within one’s lifestyle. However, to truly find a state of balance health, one must find rest. Rest and relaxation will bring one peace of mind, give the body a physical break and refresh the mindbody connection for what comes next.

WHO’S WHO IN HEARING HEALTH DO YOU KNOW WHAT TYPE OF PROVIDER YOU ARE SEEING? BY CAMRON MEIKLE, AU.D., BOARD CERTIFIED AUDIOLOGIST, HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY
I
n the Hearing and Speech world, we often talk about “Communication For All.” Communication means to impart knowledge or to express thoughts, feelings or information easily or effectively. Not only is medical terminology confusing, but the credentials following a health-care provider’s name can be just as puzzling. In order to relieve any anxiety about who is taking care of you, here is a list of all the different types of providers you may encounter when you have your hearing or balance checked. • Medical Doctor/ENT: A physician trained in the medical and surgical treatment of the ears, nose, throat, head and neck. Also called otolaryngologist. These doctors have a college degree, graduate from medical school and have additional five years or more of specialty training. Some specialize more to work with children, allergies, work specifically on certain structures in the ear/head/neck or do plastic surgery. An ENT can perform surgery (cochlear implants) and treat medical problems of the ear (infections), head and neck. • Audiologist: A specialist in the science of hearing, trained in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing and balance disorders in adults and children. These specialists have a doctorate degree (Au.D). An audiologist can diagnose and treat hearing loss, balance problems, program and repair cochlear implants, fit and program hearing aids, assess and treat tinnitus (ringing in the ears), assess and treat central auditory processing disorders and perform hearing rehabilitation. Audiologists do not prescribe medications nor perform surgery, but they can identify medical issues and refer patients to an ENT when needed. • Hearing Aid Dispenser: A specialist trained in testing hearing and fitting hearing aids. Also known as a Hearing Aid Specialist (HAS) or Hearing Instruments Specialist (HIS), this type of specialist has at least a high school diploma as well as some training in testing hearing, fitting hearing aids and

hearing rehabilitation. Some states require a college degree in any field prior to on-the-job training with hearing aid dispensing. • Audiology Assistant: A person who, after specific training and demonstrating their ability, performs specific tasks that are supervised by a licensed audiologist. This type of provider usually has on-the-job training and helps with hearing aid cleaning/repair, some hearing/balance testing and office duties. Hearing is vital for communication and greatly impacts your overall health and wellbeing and quality of life. Each person’s hearing needs are unique and require appropriate evaluation and specialized treatment. Together, these hearing health-care providers can support all of your hearing and balance needs, so you can live a full life.
REFLEXOLOGY FOR BABIES AND CHILDREN Reflexology is not just for adults; children and babies can also benefit BY DARCIE MILLER, OWNER, LIGHT IN BALANCE REFLEXOLOGY
A Holistic approach to improved health
R
eflexology is a gentle, non-invasive alternative therapy that can help with many childhood ailments. Not only can reflexology help babies and children feel better, it also offers an opportunity for parents and children to bond with each other. As most parents know it is almost impossible to communicate with an infant. We learn to differentiate the sounds and cries of hunger, hurt and sleepy, and we know when they are feeling uncomfortable or in excruciating pain from the volume and duration of their cries. Some of the discomfort babies feel is from colic, earache, teething pain, constipation and sometimes anxiety from new and strange sounds, smells and people. Using a very gentle touch to specific reflex points on the feet, hands or ears, reflexology can calm, soothe and help the baby or child relax. Some babies and children have difficulty falling asleep and become overtired and cranky—as an adult, we have all experienced this at least once and, if you have children, you most likely have experienced this numerous times. Reflex points on the feet, hands and ears can help them relax and fall asleep and,
while you are holding those reflex points, you may find yourself relaxing as well. Toddlers and older children have enormous amounts of energy. Reflexology can help quiet and relax them. For children who are hyperactive, reflexology can help them settle down and be able to concentrate. There are reflex points that children can learn to do on themselves when they are feeling anxious and uncomfortable. Most often, this is done on their hands because they are more accessible and the pressure can be applied discreetly while having their hands in their laps at a dinner table or their desk at school. Have you ever noticed babies and children gently rubbing their ear lobes when they are upset or sleepy? Located in the ear lobe are reflex points for the head, eyes, ears, mouth and brain. It is natural for them to reach up and rub the lobe as a form of self-soothing. Reflexology is another option for parents when they may be feeling overwhelmed and helpless to help their crying babies and children through pain or discomfort.

Making the New School Year a Success Tips to help your child thrive BY DR. MASON OLTMAN, PEDIATRICS NORTHWEST
A
s the new school year gears up, it is an important time to prepare your child for success. Ensuring that they are prepared and organized can lead to higher performance both academically and socially. Don’t just assume that things will be fine, as students these days face just as many, or more, pressures as you did in school. As a parent, you can help create a healthy academic home in which they thrive. 1. Nutrition before and during school affects performance Make sure your child eats at least some form of a healthy breakfast before the school day. Don't accept, "I'm not hungry.” Something as minor as a healthy bowl of cereal, toast or some pieces of fruit is better than no breakfast at all. Don’t let them choose a sugary breakfast, snacks or drinks! Consuming too much sugar can cause brain and body fatigue during the school day.
Our board-certified pediatric and adult specialty physicians specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of: allergies/hay fever asthma/respiratory disorders food allergies eczema/hives sinus problems immune disorders chronic cough sleep disorders sleep disturbances

If your child requires medication for focusing and hyperactivity during the year, it is especially important to get them a healthy breakfast as these medications can reduce appetite throughout the day. 2. Sleep quality and quantity is important Most school-aged children need 10 to 11 hours of sleep a night! During the summer months, bedtime routines are often relaxed, so it is important to reestablish a consistent bedtime routine for the school year. Make sure the routine doesn’t include screen time (TV, video games, DVDs, cell phone games) in the hour prior to bedtime, as this will make it harder for children to fall asleep due to stimulation. 3. School attendance is a must Don't let kids stay home because they are too tired or don't feel well unless you think they truly need to see a doctor. A lot of times in the fall, anxiety can mimic not feeling well in the form of stomachaches, fatigue, etc. Ask your child about school and make sure nothing is happening that the teacher or principal needs to know about. Come up with healthy reward plans for getting children to go to school. Reaching out to the

school counselor or school psychologist might also be of benefit. 4. Make sure their backpack is loaded correctly Your child’s backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of their body weight. Make sure they always use both shoulder straps and do not carry the backpack over one shoulder. Properly fitted shoulder straps help apply the weight of the back to the torso and do not pull backwards on the spine. 5. Help them get organized Feeling left out by not having the right supplies is a stressful feeling for a young student. Make sure they are properly prepared with needed school supplies and have a clear way to write down assignments and due dates. When children keep up academically early in the year, it instills confidence that they are smart and can achieve great things during the school year. If your child is attending a new school, do a trial run of going to the new school the week before to familiarize them with the campus and classroom locations so that they are not lost and flustered on day one.
Students these days face just as many, or more, pressures as you did in school. As a parent, you can help create a healthy academic home in which they thrive.
THE TROUBLE WITH FAT
How to treat that tricky stubborn fat BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN
Your friendly, neighborhood Gig Harbor dentist.
W
hen it comes to weight loss and stubborn fat, most of us have struggled at one point or another. Diet and exercise are the most important roles in a healthy and toned physique, but when our efforts fall short it is hard not to get discouraged. The green smoothies, lean protein and gym routine sometimes are not enough to help us get rid of the stubborn fat that likes to reside on our stomach, inner thighs, above our knees, under our chin and other pesky areas. You will be happy to hear, however, that there are treatments that can help eliminate this stubborn fat and have you flaunting your most confident body—without going under the knife! The two most popular treatments that have been scientifically researched and proven to permanently destroy fat cells are Kybella (deoxycholic acid) and a process known as cryolipolysis (the use of subzero temperatures to destroy fat cells by freezing them). If you have areas of stubborn fat that you want to get rid of permanently, read on. Kybella (Deoxycholic Acid) Synthetic deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient in Kybella. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into areas of fat, the fat cell is destroyed, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fat mass. Once destroyed, these fat cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal. It is important to note that, as with any prescription medication, there can be side effects, and it is important that this treatment is completed by a welltrained and certified provider. The most common side effect is swelling, which typically resolves in one to two weeks. Kybella is only FDA approved to treat submental fat (fat beneath the chin/double chin).
Many providers, however, use this medication off label to treat other areas of the body. If you have larger areas of fat you would like treated, the stomach or love handles for instance, you may find that treatments like Cool Sculpting ™ or Cryo Skin ™ are better options for you. They involve freezing your fat! That’s right! Cryolipolysis Cryolipolysis in a noninvasive body contouring treatment used to reduce fat-cell volume by freezing fat cells. This results in apoptosis (cell death) of the fat cells. This is achieved without risk to the other tissues (skin, blood vessels, muscle fibers) because the intracellular electrolytes of the fat cell are the first to crystallize in the cold before other cells. The two most common treatments for cryolipolysis are Cool Sculpting ™and Cryo Skin ™. They both involve applying subzero temperatures to the desired treatment area, and the length of treatments depends on which area of the body you are treating and which device is being used. The fat waste is processed through your lymphatic system and excreted, not reabsorbed, into the body. Both Cool Sculpting ™ and CryoSkin ™ treatments are non-invasive and completed in office. No anesthesia, no downtime and no pain. Contraindications for both treatments include pregnancy/nursing, cold intolerance conditions (Raynaud’s Syndrome), uncontrolled diabetes, and kidney or liver disease. These treatments are not intended to be an all over weight-loss solution but rather to spot treat areas of stubborn fat. When diet and exercise have not been able to eliminate that tummy pouch, double chin, love handles or other stubborn fat, you may be a perfect candidate. Talk with your aesthetic provider today and see if one of these treatments is right for you.

restoring
health
B
eing healthy means being energetic, alive and a sparkle in our eyes. It is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity but a state of complete physical, mental and social well being. When we think of restoring health, we have to think back to what we used to feel like, then, want it so bad that we’ll do whatever it takes to be well. But there is an order to things. First of all, handling digestive health is a must. That sounds odd to most people, however, health practitioners agree that unless and until the digestive system is functioning properly, you will always be chasing tails to get well. This is because if you are unable to utilize the nutrients in your foods or supplements, the organs being fed, well, aren’t. Every organ in your body needs nutrients (especially minerals) in order to function. All tissues in the body break down daily and rebuild themselves daily—a few hundred thousand cells per organ per day throughout your life. If they don’t have the raw materials daily with which to rebuild, degeneration (defined as something which breaks down faster than it rebuilds) occurs. Healthy digestion is the first target.
Repair function, bring balance and eliminate physiological stressors BY HOLLY A. CARLING, O.M.D., L.AC., PH.D.
A healthy eliminative system is also crucial. If the body is overloaded with trying to deal with deteriorated cells and other metabolic wastes, health is hampered. When overloaded, this overloads the immune system as well. Most people think their immune system is OK if they rarely get sick. The immune system takes on the load of other systems that are not functioning well, and illness isn’t always a great indicator of its ability to handle everything it has to do effectively. The endocrine system, the system responsible for all hormonal functions, must be balanced. If you are fatigued, are carrying around excess weight, have blood-sugar problems such as hypoglycemia or diabetes, or have male or female hormone issues, your endocrine system is out of whack. The endocrine system is the director of all organ function in the body, and because of its incredible interdependence of one gland to another, if even one gland is stressed, the whole system tries to compensate, creating a whole range of illnesses. Don’t neglect other systems such as the cardiovascular, nervous or musculoskeletal systems, because they, too, are equally important. In fact, there is not a single organ in the body that isn’t a part of this highly refined, incredible system we call the human body! To be healthy we must restore function, bring balance and eliminate physiological stressors. There is much we can do to take the burden off the body and supply the nutrients necessary for the body to call on its innate ability to heal itself. Meeting
Aggression
WITH KINDNESS IMPORTANT TOOLS FOR YOUR CHILD TO KNOW WHEN IT COMES TO BULLYING
BY PATTY HUTCHENS
I
t’s back to school time. While for some students it can be an exciting time of reuniting with their friends, for others it can produce a great deal of anxiety. The reason? They have been victims of bullying in the past and returning to that environment can be scary and intimidating. For many in the older generation, we equate bullying with the mean kid on the playground who pushes others around. But for the younger generation, bullying takes on a whole new form. Social media provides an entirely new platform for people to say negative, mean things about one another. And not having to say those things face to face provides even more anonymity for the aggressor. In recent years, the Centers for Disease Control and the Department of Education have taken a hard look at bullying. It has defined the elements to include unwanted aggressive behavior, observed or perceived power imbalance, and repetition of behaviors or a high likelihood of repetition. Bullying can include either direct or indirect contact with the targeted victim. Direct would be something done in the presence of the victim, and indirect contact would be along the lines of the spreading of rumors. The unwanted aggressive behavior can take on many forms including physical, verbal, relational and damage to property. Not only that, it can be done in a variety of ways including cyberbullying. And although we think of bullying as something that is done among the youth, the effects on the victim can carry well into adulthood and can even be a contributing factor in suicide. According to counselor Barb Perusse, LPC who in her practice works closely with children, the biggest form of bullying she sees is through social media. “It is also common for kids to say mean things to others in the hallways at school or they go out of their way to exclude others,” she said. She cites one example of a child who was told that she was ugly and should die. “When things like this are said, I try to encourage those that I counsel to look at the words being directed at them from a different perspective. I ask them, ‘Is this OK? Would you ever think this is OK to say to another person?’ By taking themselves out of it, it helps increase their self-esteem and helps them to not see it as a personal attack.” Perusse said she sees the non-stop social media as nothing short of dangerous. “We see people living what we perceive as a perfect life, and that simply is not true. We cannot and should not compare ourselves to
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
others,” she said. According to the national organization Stop Bullying, research shows that persistent bullying can lead to feelings of isolation, rejection, exclusion or despair. And while the bullying can definitely be a risk factor of suicide, most people who take their own lives have multiple risk factors. According to the Centers for Disease Control, any involvement with bullying behavior is one stressor that can significantly contribute to feelings of hopelessness, which in turn can raise the risk of suicide. The fact that people are now talking about this subject has helped to raise awareness about the harm that bullying does to all youth who are involved in bullying in any manner. It has also opened up a dialogue among schools, parents and community members to discuss the topic. So, what can we, as educators and parents, do to help reduce, and hopefully eliminate all together, this horrific practice? Erin Roos is a teacher at Sandpoint High School. She teaches a class called Real Life which instructs students on skills to manage time, stress, conflict, creating positive communication and more. She also teaches a mentorship class that is designed for upperclassmen who wish to be positive role models for the student body. Each mentor leads a multigrade level group of students on topics pertinent to the social/emotional and academic/career planning needs of teens on a monthly basis. And while all this has done a great deal to help the students, the reality is that the problem remains.

FEATURE STORY “Schools are teaching respect, acceptance and inclusion, but unfortunately bullying still exists,” said Roos. Each year, Roos shows a video to her students on how to stop bullying dead in its tracks. The video is presented by Brooks Gibbs, an awardwinning social skills educator who teaches students, parents and educators how to build emotional resilience and live by the Golden Rule. Gibbs explains that sociologists have studied bullying for decades. However, instead of referring to the act as bullying, they refer to it as dominance behavior. “When a bully picks on someone, they are trying to demonstrate their power over that person,” said Gibbs. And when the victim of bullying responds in anger, the aggressor thrives on that behavior. Instead, said Gibbs, if the victim is resilient, emotionally strong and mentally tough, then no matter what the aggressor says, it will show them that they are not successful in their taunting. Gibbs explains that while some may believe it requires high self-esteem and selfconfidence on the part of the victim to respond in such a way as “I don’t care what you say to me,” it is really more a game of winning and losing. “The way that they [victims] win is by not getting upset, and the bully will lose. And when people lose, they don’t like playing the game, so they just leave you alone,” explains Gibbs. “Don’t get upset no matter what the bully says. I’m not saying it’s easy, but in logic it’s very simple.” He says the act of bullying is when people hurt one’s feelings. “Many people think of bullying as more complex than that. Some people think of bullying as an act of violence,” said Gibbs. But an act of violence, such as

will grow in all these areas.
When addressing how we, as a society, can help children who are victims of bullying, he encourages people to empower our youth. By empowering kids to solve their own social problems, Gibbs said three things occur: They grow in self-esteem, self-confidence and selfworth.
“The bully is usually seeking a strong reaction or emotional response to feel powerful,” said Roos. “We also investigate assertive responses as opposed to aggressive or passive responses to bullying. This can include assertive body language, eye contact, tone of voice, setting boundaries with people and having a prepared and practiced response. Even surprising the bully by being friendly and making efforts to get to know them better works. We know that people tend to treat each other better when they know more about each other and recognize they are more similar than different.”
“All these words have one thing in common— the word ‘self.’ You cannot do it for the child; he or she has to do it for him or herself,” said Gibbs. By solving problems by themselves, children
Roos said she echoes Gibbs’ lessons in her class by discussing with her students the benefits of responding calmly, with humor or not responding at all.

She advises that if the bullying behavior increases in frequency and intensity, she and other staff encourage students to tell someone. “Preferably, tell a trusted adult or someone with authority. Keeping documentation of the bullying and having witnesses is helpful. This includes text messages, screen shots and video,” she said. Roos emphasizes that it is important that students know not to retaliate if being bullied online. “Those who have authority at school cannot help you if you are bullying back. Again, keep evidence of the bullying and do not respond online other than assertively saying the comments are not appreciated. Students have the power to control their social media privacy settings. They may block anyone with whom they do not wish to communicate, and they can

report any bullying to the social media website. They can also take a break from social media and stop using it for several weeks or months. Many students are pleasantly surprised at the relief they feel from not worrying about the possibility of reading posts, tweets or snaps that might upset them,” she said. Last year in the connections class, Roos and the mentors discussed with the students what it means to be an upstander, as opposed to a bystander. “On social media, this may look like posting a positive comment about someone after a bully has posted something hurtful. Or it could include telling the victim something you appreciate about them or what they do really well,” explained Roos. “This seems to be effective in shutting down the bully without causing more confrontation, as well as building up the bullied person.” Parents should be aware of their child and his or her behaviors. Warning signs that your child is being bullied can be many, including:
he encourages people to empower our youth. By empowering kids to solve their own social problems, Gibbs said three things occur: They grow in self-esteem, self-confidence and self-worth. unexplained injuries, lost or destroyed personal property, frequent headaches or stomach aches, change in eating habits, difficulty sleeping, not wanting to go to school, a sudden loss of friends, decreased self-esteem and destructive behaviors including harming oneself. “Social media is the new great frontier for bullying because it is so easy to hide behind a screen and say mean things,” said Roos.

“Students are also unlikely to tell their parents or an adult if this is happening. I strongly encourage parents to notice their child’s mood before and after they are checking their social media and to talk to them about it. Parents should also be checking their child’s social media accounts regularly to see if any bullying is occurring.” It is a complex and highly technological world in which children have to navigate these days. And while there is no easy answer to how we can put an end to bullying, Roos said it all boils down to this: “I believe the most valuable tools we can supply our kids with are self-confidence, self-love and assertiveness training,” she said. ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?
SEE WHAT THIS SEASON HAS TO OFFER FOR AREA HIGH SCHOOLS By Patty Hutchens GIG HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL Head Coach George Fairhart is in his second year at Gig Harbor High School and brings with him more than 30 years of coaching experience. With gear checked out to approximately 120 athletes this past spring, Coach Fairhart expects a great turnout for this season. When asked what he sees as the biggest strength on this year’s varsity team, Coach Fairhart said it was the return of many experienced players. And while football is a team sport, there are many key players to watch for this year. Among them are Jurrian Hering, WR/DB; Ben Hollenbeck, QB WR/DB; Nick Belarde, OL/DL; Jake Flynn, OL/DL; Malik Livingston, OL/DL; Sam Peacock, OL/DL; Ryan King, WR/DB; Tommy Williams, RB/LB; Jake Bruess, RB/LB; and Logan Kinney, kicker and punter. Look for the team to run a multipleset offense as Coach Fairhart said he expects this team to be greatly improved from last season, when they finished fourth in their conference. “Our team has grown in many areas this year. We have a much larger turnout than last season. We have a much better commitment to offseason conditioning, and our players are stronger and faster than last season,” said Fairhart. “Our team has a better idea of the football concepts that we run.”

COACH FAIRHART SAYS THE TEAM’S BIGGEST OPPONENT WILL BE THEIR NATURAL RIVAL, PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL. “THEY HAVE GREAT PLAYERS AND GREAT COACHES."
While each and every game is important, Coach Fairhart says the team’s biggest opponent will be their natural rival, Peninsula High School. “They have great players and great coaches,” he said. Joining Coach Fairhart on the sidelines this season will be his assistant coaches and support staff: Jeff Mladenich QB/Special Teams Chris Hunke, LB/RB Darrin Reeves, LB/RB Ti Zurfluh, OL/DL Bill Derbas, OL/DL Don Clegg, DBs Troy Rushforth, WR/DB

Coach Ross Filkins is in his 23rd year at Peninsula High School and looks forward to another great season for his team. “We have made post season 12 of the past 13 years and played in the state quarterfinals five of the last six. Only one other 3A/4A team has been that consistent,” said Filkins, who adds, “Will we take the next step?” A 1988 graduate of Wilson High School, Coach Filkins graduated in 1993 from Washington State University.
Last year, the Peninsula High School Seahawks finished with eight wins and four losses. “Last year’s team was the least experienced team we’ve had,” said Filkins. But they also gained a lot of experience, too, which will be an asset this season. Coach Filkins said there will be seven returning starters on offense and six returning starters on defense. “There will be a total of 21 returning letter winners,” he said. Look for the team to run a multi-spread offense, and the defense will be what Filkins refers to as “the Amoeba D.”

Joining Coach Filkins on the sidelines will be offensive coordinator Jim Fairfield, defensive coordinator Joel Epstein, run game coordinator Mauritz Winquist and team statistician Eric Johnson. Filkins will also serve as the special teams coordinator. When asked about the strength of this year’s team, Coach Filkins pointed to the return of many experienced players and his players’ passion for the game of football. “In addition, the coaching staff has been together a long time and takes pride in putting players in a position to be successful,” said Filkins. The top returning players who will be key this season include: Burke Griffin, 2019, QB-DB, 5’10”, 168 – 1st Team All SSC 2017 Braeden Potter, 2019, RB-OLB, 6’, 202 – 1st Team All SSC 2017 Isaac Casey, 2019, LB, 6’, 176 – 1st Team All SSC 2017 Isaiah Juvik, 2019, DL, 6’2”, 208 – 1st Team All SSC 2017 Chase Wittmers, 2020, WR-OLB, 6’1”, 206 – 1st Team All SSC 2017 Mason Hyde, 2020, OL-DL, 6’4”, 252 – All SSC 2017 – Major College Recruit Khalif Spry, 2019, OL-DL, 6’3”, 271 Graham Schmidt, 2019, OL-DL, 6’2”, 198 Filkins also shares that the top newcomers this season include: Shawn Leonard, 2020, RB-S, 5’11”, 171 Peyton Bice, 2020, QB, 6’3”, 181

Coach Filkins said the team will need to work on staying healthy this season, and the coaching staff will need to continue to develop their young playmakers. Peninsula High School was not only the top team in the league last year but among the top in the state as well, according to Filkins. The team opens at O’Dea, who were the 3A state champions last year and host Skyline in week two of the season. “They will be one of the top 4A teams in the state,” said Filkins. And of course, you won’t want to miss Fishbowl, which takes place October 19! Be sure and come out to support the Peninsula High School Seahawks this season!

SUPPORTING OUR STUDENT ATHLETES IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH TO SHOW THEM THE COMMUNITY CARES
WITH SCHOOL UPON US, FALL SPORTS ARE SUDDENLY IN FULL SWING. Students have pep rallies, homecoming activities and more. But it’s not just the high school community that can lend support to the local teams; individuals, families and businesses can all do much to help support the youth in their extracurricular activities. Here are just a few ways that people can bring a community atmosphere to the various sporting events.
In addition to learning the skills of certain sports, there are many social benefits that are derived from participating in athletics. As fans, we can display good sportsmanship to our team, the opposing team and the officials. If you have younger children, bring them along to the games and emphasize how important it is to be supportive. It will help encourage them to be involved in sports as they grow older as well. After all, what child would want to play a sport knowing they could be ridiculed by the crowd?

Do you have a special skill from which some sports teams may benefit? Maybe a team needs help fundraising. If you have an expertise in this area, step up and offer to help. Maybe you have played a sport before and could help out at practice or coach some of the kids. Many kids need positive role models outside of their own parents, and being a volunteer on a sports team is just one of many ways you can make a difference in a young person’s life.
Are you part of a business that emphasizes involvement in the community? There are many ways the business sector can support youth sports. They can monetarily sponsor a team or allow employees a certain number of hours on the clock each month to give back to the community. Volunteering can be in a variety of ways. It can be through being a team manager, offering to speak to a group of athletes about the importance of representing the community in a positive light or even helping to coach. Whatever your passion, find a way that you can put it to use to support local young athletes.

Does your school have a booster club? If so, look into joining! Or if it doesn’t, maybe you are the kind of person who can rally people in the community to form a booster club. The reality is that when school budgets are cut, sports are typically the first thing to be cut. By having and donating to a booster club, your school athletes can receive support for costs that may not be covered by the school. Equipment gets old or may no longer be safe for the kids to use. Camps may be cost prohibitive for some students, so raising money for scholarships is a great benefit to the students.

TRAVEL & LEISURE
Vernon, British Columbia Where you can enjoy your American Discount STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND
V
ernon, British Columbia, is not on most people’s radar as a vacation destination, and that is what makes it so special. Set in the heart of Canada’s Okanagan Valley, this lovely area is known for its lakes, fruit orchards, world-class wineries and rolling hills. As summer’s warm temperatures begin to cool, the shoulder season in September is a perfect time to visit. Enjoy activities like mountain biking at SilverStar Mountain Resort and stand-up paddleboarding without the crowds; eat at farm-to-table restaurants which highlight the bounty of the fall harvest; and tour historical attractions and family friendly farms. You will also get to enjoy what the locals call the American discount. The current exchange rate is very favorable to the U.S. dollar. One USD is worth about $1.30 in Canadian currency and has been for the last six months. This works out to a 30 percent discount on your trip, and you’ll find prices in Vernon much less than the tourist destinations of Whistler, Victoria and Vancouver. Where to Stay Vernon has a variety of places to stay from resorts on the nearby lakes, chain hotels in town and vacation rentals. One local place that really stands out is the Vernon Lodge and Conference Center centrally located in the heart of Vernon and walking distance to many downtown restaurants and shops. The hotel has a beautiful three-story atrium with a natural stream incorporated into the design, which flows through the atrium surrounded by more than 1,000 plants. Soak in the pool or hot tub with the sounds of the creek trickling by. The Lodge Kitchen restaurant and bar are located in the atrium as well and make a good location for a first night in town meal.

Where to Eat The Okanagan Valley is foodie heaven where fresh bountiful produce, handcrafted cheeses and meats are turned into delectable meals made by local chefs. Choices abound from a bus station restaurant, a downtown locals’ favorite, to winery bistros with stunning views. Take a tasting tour and stock up as you go for the ultimate picnic. The Chase Winery and Garden Bistro is on the Scenic Sip Trail, a group of eight wineries in Lake Country who joined together to promote this beautiful area. The Garden Bistro is an excellent place for lunch. Dine on a patio with views of the vineyard, orchards, Okanagan Lake and the surrounding mountains. This farm-to-table restaurant features a ½-acre organic vegetable garden. Chef Alex Lavroff designs the menu to showcase local flavors which complement the Chase wines. Each menu item has a suggested wine pairing. You’d never guess the Greyhound Bus Station would have one of the best breakfasts in Vernon. Eatology is a popular local café with the crowds to prove it. Service works a little differently here; you que up to the counter to order your breakfast and then are seated. There is always a line but the tables turn over quickly as if everyone knows they need to share this

great place without lingering overly long. Once seated, our food arrived promptly and my coffee cup was never left empty. The food was so good, not overly fancy but just good ingredients freshly prepared. Chicken and waffles were yummy but it was a hard decision as everything coming out of the kitchen looked delicious. Well worth a stop. Midtown Bistro is where the locals go to eat dinner. It is famous for its charcuterie boards. Each one is a work of art. Local meats and cheeses are surrounded with fresh-cut vegetables, fruit, a house-made dip, French bread and crackers adorned with edible flowers and herbs. It truly is a sight to behold. Enjoy with a handcrafted cocktail. The menu is a fresh take on comfort food. Think a gourmet version of meatloaf with mac and cheese. At the bottom of the menu is a list of all the local places Midtown Bistro sources their ingredients from. Truly a memorable meal. Things to Do September marks the beginning of the sockeye salmon run, and 2018 is a dominant year, which means there will be a lot of salmon. The sockeye salmon are bright red with green heads, making them easily visible in the water. Elements Adventure Company offers a unique way to see the fall salmon run. as Big Canoes, they have a history. The Voyageur Canoes were copied from the canoes built by First Nations Peoples. They were paddled by the Voyageurs, French Canadians, who were fur trappers. Each modern canoe holds up to 11 adults or 15 kids, and it takes at least four adults to launch the 250-pound boat. The tours are led by Paddle Canada certified instructors, and you will get to view the salmon at one of their spawning grounds while also learning some canoeing skills. Take time to stop in the Kalavida Surf Shop, which has the vibes of a Hawaiian surf shop. Although there are no waves on Kalamalka Lake, this area has become one of the top destinations in Canada for stand-up paddleboarding or SUP. The extended shallow entry lake makes for nice warm water even into September. If you want to paddle as a group, check out the 17-foot Kracken, which holds six to 10 paddlers. Kalamalka Lake makes for a very scenic paddle. Many locals just paddle out and then relax on their boards while taking in the scenery. The Historic O’Keefe Ranch is a step back in time to the early settlers of the Okanagan Valley. The ranch was founded in 1867 at the end of the wagon road at the site of the stagecoach depot. It became a self-contained small town with a post office, blacksmith, grist mill, general store and a church. Today many of the old buildings still exist and can be explored on a self-guided tour. There is an interesting collection of farm equipment and other museum exhibits. Admission includes a 20-minute tour of the

O’Keefe mansion. Children will enjoy all the farm animals and exploring the corn maze. There is a restaurant on site and a gift shop filled with local products. It is very easy to fill half a day or more. The Okanagan Valley is known for its orchards and farms. You can’t really experience the area without visiting some of them. To learn more about where food comes from, make sure to visit Planet Bee which has a bustling bee hive you can observe from in the shop and learn about honey, mead and the importance of bees to the agricultural community. Davison Orchards has been a family farm for over 80 years. This bustling complex has a store, a restaurant and bakery utilizing farm-fresh produce, a playground and offers farm tours with samples of produce right where it is grown. What is old is new again at BX Press Cidery, where the cider is natural, crisp and refreshing served with a bit of history of the thirdgeneration apple growers and the cider. WOOD-FIRED CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES Courtesy of Millville Pizza Co. This recipe makes 12 cookies at 100 grams (approximately ½ cup) per cookie.
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •
¾ cup white sugar ¾ cup brown sugar 1 cup butter 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. baking soda 2 ¼ cups flour 2 cups chocolate chips
FIRST MIX
SECOND MIX
• ¾ cup white sugar • ¾ cup brown sugar • 1 cup butter
• 2 eggs • 1 tsp. vanilla • Combine with first mix
THIRD MIX In a separate bowl whisk together: • ½ tsp. salt • ½ tsp. baking soda • 2 ¼ cups flour • Combine with first and second mix
FINAL MIX • 2 cups chocolate chips
WOOD OVEN BAKE • Using kindling on the left side of the wood-fired oven, create a small flame fire with an inside floor temp at 480°F. It’s important the flame does not extend up and over the inside dome of the oven to ensure an even bake on top and inside the cookie. • Scoop 100 gram (approximately ½ cup) cookie dough balls. • Roll and flatten onto cookie sheets placing sheet at far back right of oven for 3 minutes. • Rotate cookie sheet clockwise, placing at the center right of the oven for 5 minutes. • Rotate cookie sheet clockwise placing at the front right of the oven for 3 minutes. • Finish bake by placing cookie sheet in the center of the oven. Bake until tops of cookies are browned. (This is a wood-fired cookie, so a little burn on the bottom and edges is a good thing—caramelized sugar!)
CONVECTION OVEN • Preheat oven to 350°F. • Roll and flatten 100 gram (approximately ½ cup) cookie dough balls onto cookie sheets and bake for 10 to 12 minutes. BROUGHT TO YOU BY: 3411 Harborview Dr. Gig Harbor, WA | 253.514.8626 MillvillePizzaCo.com

Race For A Soldier & Prayer Breakfast HELP GIVE OUR SOLDIERS PERMISSION TO START DREAMING
BY JILLIAN CHANDLER
A
run for hope, for support and a better future for the men and women that serve our country, Race For A Soldier is more than a run through the scenic Pacific Northwest. Founded by Leslie Mayne, who lost her son, PFC Kyle M. Farr, in 2009, after he was treated for Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury for nearly six months, Race For A Soldier and Prayer Breakfast became her response. “Reading his journals, medical paperwork and testimonies of his time in the VA, it appears that he didn’t have the right relationships, right resources and, my understanding, the right response to his trials and tribulations after his military service in Iraq,” recalls Leslie. “Too many soldiers have this outcome.” Race For A Soldier and Prayer Breakfast benefit the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation (PTSDFoundation.org), which exists to bring hope and healing to military members, veterans and their families who deal with PostTraumatic Stress and combat trauma. Since its inception in 2011, the Foundation has given nearly $300,000 to local alternative therapy organizations.

Exercise for a cause!
Race weekend kicks off Friday, September 14, with the Prayer Breakfast at the Gig Harbor Boys and Girls Club, sponsored by Dimmer Family Foundation, Subaru Puyallup, Harbor General Store, Barbara Creighton, Mark and Angel Farr, and Brian and Heather Yates. This is an inspiring morning of service members sharing their stories and learning what the PTSD Foundation’s mission is all about. Race for a Soldier takes place Sunday, September 16, at the Gig Harbor YMCA. From seasoned athletes to novice runners, all are encouraged to participate in the 10k, 5k or virtual course. “Anyone can participate; everyone will be inspired,” says Jeff Bauknecht, co-director of the race. He adds: “Runners on race day will be inspired by a high-energy patriotic morning of music, National Anthem, messages and finally running with more than a thousand of their friends with the mission of telling our military service members they are not alone, and there are solutions for the challenges they live with.” Register to attend the Prayer Breakfast online at PrayForASoldier.org, and for more information, registration and to volunteer for Race For A Solder, visit RaceForASoldier.org.
