hen Erin Binnall moved to North Idaho in 2001 and met her husband, she knew North Idaho was home. Her introduction to health care came while working as a candy striper volunteering at a hospital in her hometown outside of Chicago. After moving to North Idaho, she obtained her degree in healthcare administration and started a career in community health. She would join Bonner General Health in 2017, where she found a warm, hometown hospital committed to the community’s needs. When she’s not working, you can find her with her family, hiking, walking their French bulldogs, and enjoying time with family and friends. Q. What have been some of the most exciting achievements or moments over the past year at BGH, and what do you hope to accomplish or see happen in the coming year? A. There are always challenges in health care, especially in a rural community. Our population expands over 3,000 square miles of rural mountainous terrain, making [prompt] access to quality health care essential to saving lives in North Idaho. With increased patient volume, a significant highlight of 2021 is the collaboration of Bonner General’s employees coming together and working in different areas to support each other and ensure patient care is a priority. We have seen people working in various departments, extra shifts, and volunteering their free time to support each other and the community we are proud to serve. Additional highlights are the increased partnerships with our regional medical community, being the recipient of the Sunderland Foundation grant of $200,000 toward our Emergency Department remodel, and a successful first-time virtual Heart Ball with overwhelming support from our community. I hope to see the same community support, teamwork and kindness in the upcoming year. Q. How are BGH and the Foundation such an integral part of our Sandpoint community, and what does it mean to you to be a part of that? A. We are available when high-level trauma or stroke patients need stabilizing to get them to the right place at the right time to receive the right level of

care. The Foundation is integral to raise donations and financially assist each department, various hospital programs, and develop new and existing services. In addition, the Foundation Board meets quarterly with an Advisory Council comprised of 65 locals who represent a broad range of interests in the community. The purpose is to act as “twoway communicators,” receiving updates from the hospital and providing feedback from their network of employees, family, friends and neighbors. I have been working in health care for over 20 years and am honored to be a part of a team that prioritizes enhancing, educating and sustaining a healthy community. Q. What sets BGH apart as a small-town hospital and health advocate, how it defines its mission and how it helps care for the community? A. As an independent hospital, we can remain firmly anchored to our mission, the people we serve and the community we love. We can address a need even if it isn’t a sound financial decision when we see a need—for example, behavioral health. We needed a psychiatrist in Sandpoint. We developed the business plan, and even though we knew it wasn’t a financially prudent decision, it was the right decision for the community. As an independent hospital, we can make those decisions. In addition, our Board of Directors is made up of local people who are committed to providing high-quality care and keeping an independent community hospital. Q. If you could sum up what the BGH community means to you, what would that be? A. I think what speaks to me the most about the BGH community is the longevity of our employees. We choose to live and work in this community because of the quality of life and the ability to care for our friends and neighbors. Each day I come to work, I am greeted with a friendly smile. Just knowing if I needed anything personally or professionally,

I am surrounded by caring, compassionate team members. Q. How is community support and involvement essential to the success of Bonner General Health and the Foundation, and what does this look like? A. Community support is essential to the success of BGH and the Foundation because it broadens our perspective and understanding of how we might be more effective in helping the individuals we care for. Our goal is for Bonner General to be a catalyst that serves others first to create a lasting, positive impact on Bonner County at large. Each contribution assists the Foundation in its quest to help provide local, quality health care. Q. What current/future developments are you most excited about for BGH? A. I am excited about the continued growth of services and resources we can provide to our community. I am also looking forward to continuing our partnerships with community organizations that offer help and opportunities in line with our Community Health Needs Assessment specific to obesity, mental health/suicide, substance abuse, and abuse and neglect. Q. Is there a specific person or moment that has helped define who you are today and your work and vision with BGH and the Foundation? A. Several people and experiences have helped define who I am today and my work and vision in health care, but the main person would be my dad. When my dad was 35 years old, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. There has not been one day that he has had in the last 36 years where he has woken up and used this debilitating disease as an excuse not to live his best life. So, work hard, be kind, and what you take from your community, find opportunities to give back. Go Sandpoint Magazine

HUMBIRD SCHWEITZER’S NEWEST ADDITION

his winter, Schweitzer is opening the doors to its newest lodging experience, the Humbird. For those of us who have been tracking its progress, it’s with bated breath that we await the opening of a project that’s unfolded over the course of more than a year, as we’ve enjoyed the powder of winter and sunshine-filled days of summer up on the mountain. The modern new design is unlike anything Schweitzer’s done before, and with its sleek lines, sustainable concept and wideopen views, it delivers a brand-new boutique hotel experience to the mountain—one you can start booking now. Designed by SkyLab architecture out of Portland, the concept of the hotel is centered around the natural environment and history of the area, with a simple, unique design that prioritizes the scenic views and natural surroundings, while harkening back to Sandpoint’s history as a mill town. Timber and glass define the design concept of the Humbird, aptly named after the historic lumber mill that helped build Sandpoint in the early 1900s—at one point growing to become the largest sawmill in the region and owning over 200,000 acres of forestland. “In doing research for the name, there were a lot of different avenues,” explains Dig Chrismer, marketing manager at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. “A lot of the areas on Schweitzer are named for geographic areas of Idaho; there’s some ties into the natural geography and history of the place.” The team landed upon Humbird, as it seemed the most natural fit for the spirit and vision of Schweitzer. “The Humbird Mill was really such a cornerstone of the community and turned Sandpoint into this small logging town, a community for families, and that really struck a chord. It really was fitting to model that.” The hotel imbues a modern, Nordic design with cross-laminated timber throughout the building. Exposed structural elements and lots of natural wood and finishes highlight the structure and lend a sense of warmth to the space, while also seamlessly connecting it with the beauty outdoors through large, expansive windows that line the exterior walls of the building. The placement of the Humbird directly at the parking lot and entrance to the Schweitzer Village at first seems unusual, but as you come into the hotel and look through the windows framing the village, mountains and Lake Pend Oreille below in such a stunning Go Sandpoint Magazine

and different way, it seems the perfect location, anchoring the Humbird at the forefront of the village. The attention to detail within the hotel is incredible. A large bar and huge fireplace anchor the farm-to-table restaurant inside the Humbird: Crow’s Bench. The restaurant and bar is open to the public; you don’t have to stay at the Humbird to enjoy the beautiful space, large outdoor deck and epic views overlooking the village. The menu from new food and beverage director John Calderon is Bavarian inspired, offering a unique twist on classic Bavarian fare. While the design is simple and modern, each detail has been carefully thought out, down to the lighting fixtures, which incorporate the phrase “Pray for Snow” in Morse code. As more and more visitors have come to stay and play at Schweitzer’s, the mountain saw an increased need for more accommodations, particularly as private home stay options have declined as more second homeowners have opted to head to the mountain with remote work options ever more available in the face of the pandemic. Humbird helps fill the gap by providing 31 units for Schweitzer’s destination guests, a huge gain for the mountain in the midst of even more Schweitzer-goers all season long, including new Ikon Pass holders now that Schweitzer is a partner of the Ikon Pass community. The Humbird provides a new and unique level of experience at Schweitzer: a high-end boutique, ski-in, ski-out stay that prioritizes comfort, luxury and the ultimate Schweitzer getaway. “There are a lot of guests who want that, and we’ll be able to provide that,” explains Chrismer. But along with this boutique experience, the Humbird and Crow’s Bench will offer an open, friendly atmosphere where all are welcome, and this is made obvious by the open, expansive restaurant space and outdoor deck that conveys a warm sense of community, epic experiences and shared thrills. “In keeping with Schweitzer’s character, everything we have here is for everybody,” she adds. “We’re trying to make sure that there’s a variety of experiences for all the different types of riders and [visitors].” In addition to its 31 rooms and 50-seat restaurant, the Humbird offers guests a workout space, gathering area and an underground parking lot—a big addition to the Schweitzer village, as parking has proven difficult with the rapid growth of the mountain. The end result will be worth the wait, as the Humbird approaches its final months of construction. The process hasn’t been easy. It’s challenging to build up at the mountain—conditions aren’t necessarily welcoming, and the building season is short, with snow falling as early as October and lasting well into spring. Jackson Construction has helped bring the project to completion. Being based in the intermountain west, they understand what it takes to undertake a project of this size in unique conditions and have filled a major role in the completion of a Schweitzer vision that promises to live up to its original hopes and dreams. “They came into the project, and they were able to work with what had already been done and established,” says Chrismer. “If you work with great people, you’re going to have great results.” After years of planning, working with the architects at SkyLab to come up with a vision, and then carrying it out with help from the Board at Schweitzer, the community and Jackson Construction, seeing it all come together has been an incredible experience, adds Chrismer. And the end result is finally within reach. Humbird is expected to open within the next month or two, depending on the weather, and is currently taking reservations from January 14 onward. 18

As many restaurants and hospitality services throughout Sandpoint have experienced, the industry was hit hard by COVID, and it hasn’t been easy to find and retain staff for the growing amount of business and tourism Sandpoint has seen. Opening a new hotel and restaurant in the midst of this, Schweitzer has been cognizant of the issues facing hospitality workers and has made efforts to offer outstanding opportunities for their employees, with increased wages across the board. The mountain is also working on projects for employee housing—a major need in light of the current housing market in the area. s the seasons change, so does the real estate market. Make sure you are taking the proper steps to gain valuable insights on last year’s market, which will continue to inform this year’s market, with little actual changes in pricing in sight.

“After we had a brief slowdown in midsummer, we started to see more and more buyers being able to purchase homes in North Idaho with a loan,” said Associate RE/MAX Broker Nedra Kanavel. “Earlier in 2021, the majority of sales happening were cash. It’s great to see more everyday people with various kinds of mortgages being able to get their dream property too.” Specifically, the housing market has picked up since the summer months—a trend that is looking to continue, along with other holiday trends. “The fall housing market has steadily heated back up,” Kanavel said. “We’ve gone from a six-month supply of listings—based on the number of buyers out there—in July to a three-and-a-half-month supply of listings. Some of that is typical as we head into the holidays and some sellers choose to stay off the market. But I think we’ll continue to see a very active market through winter.” With last winter’s housing market on fire, this year is looking to be a slow burn. We are seeing different types of housing go on the market for different types of buyers.

“Diversity and opportunity!” Kanavel said. “There is something for everyone in Sandpoint and the nearby communities. I love getting out and exploring all of our micro-markets. Considering the rest of the country, I am grateful that, for the most part, Sandpoint’s economy and community have continued to thrive. There is opportunity here, unlike many other places right now.” While the housing market is in a constant flux, it’s important to note that these are minor changes. For people looking to get into the housing market who have the funds, there’s really no better time than now. “Be wary of waiting for something to change,” Kanavel said. “I have clients from over a year ago who decided to wait and see what happened, and now they wished they had jumped on that house they had their eye on.” When getting expert advice on the housing market in Sandpoint, Kanavel is at the top of her game. She knows the market and can assist with inside knowledge about when to make a move and when to wait.

“North Idaho is going to continue to be a place that people want to move to,” she said. “I certainly do not want prices to skyrocket out of control like they did through spring 2021, but I also don’t see the demand for property in our area slowing down any time soon. If you know you want property now, I would act now.” For those looking to purchase their first home in Sandpoint, Kanavel takes a logical approach and suggests that one take their time and make sure they surround themselves with the right kind of people. One never wants to get into something they can’t afford, but having the right kind of support and advice around you is probably even more important. “Buying your first home is incredibly exciting!” Kanavel said. “The temptation is to start searching online for what you think you can afford, but I highly recommend to first find a great mortgage officer! They will set you up for success and help you determine exactly what you can afford. After that, connect with a real estate agent who’s willing to put in the time to help you find what fits your lifestyle needs and your budget. Prices have gone up, but there are still opportunities for first-time home buyers in our area.”

s we look forward to a new year, there are plenty of fun ways to say goodbye to 2021—several of which will be found at one of our most famous landmarks.

As Christmas break begins, the activities and bustle at Schweitzer begin to really come alive. From December 17 through New Year’s Day, expect to find the mountain busy with visitors but also plenty to do outside of riding the slopes. Outdoor games and dining areas are set up, and there will be food and beverage specials throughout the village. New Year’s Eve is always a night to remember on the mountain for those who’ve experienced it. After a day riding the powder, take rest and prepare to party. All the restaurants will be open with several specials to choose from. There will be all sorts of fun outside in the village and a more traditional 21 and older New Year’s Eve party at Taps! If you don’t want to head all the way up the mountain, consider ringing in the New Year at Sandpoint’s oldest hangout. The 219 will welcome revelers with drink specials, a great craft beer list and live music. This year, they welcome The Jason Perry Band. The group is a funk-rock powerhouse blending soulful original songs and exciting renditions of funk, rock and soul classics. Music starts at 9pm. If you need a stern wakeup after all that celebrating, consider meeting Boy Scout Troop 111 at City Beach on New Year’s Day. Bring a towel because you’ll be encouraged to take the annual Polar Plunge by jumping into icy Lake Pend Oreille. Eager jumpers can meet up at the boat ramp, with the first brave souls set to hit the water at 11am. The troop will provide both male and female changing tents and warming areas. Hot coffee and cocoa will also be provided. Have a safe and festive holiday season!

wooshing down the powdery slopes at Schweitzer only to be zipped up once more by a high-speed lift, many of us don’t stop to think how the very first chair lift got started. Local Jack Fowler was inspired after a ski vacation to British Columbia, and along with some fellow likeminded investors including Jim Brown, looked to the snow-filled slopes and basin of Schweitzer Mountain as the perfect spot for a local resort. But they needed money for the first lift. And so local “shares” were sold to residents to fund the chair lift, and on December 4, 1963, the first chairlift at Schweitzer opened. Today, you can ski the run “Jack’s Dream” close to where the first lift originally opened—a tribute to the founding father of our favorite ski mountain.
