f you’ve been in Sandpoint any time at all, odds are you’ve stopped by Joel’s for a delicious bite. But the man behind the scenes doesn’t just serve up a good taco. Husband, father of four and City Council member Joel Aispuro was nominated as Sandpoint Living Local’s Finest Person of the Year for 2021. Since he first moved here at the age of 8, Sandpoint has been home, and today, you’ll find him behind the scenes in more ways than one. A man who understands community and works daily to foster it throughout our town, Joel will be the first to greet you with a warm smile and welcoming handshake. Q. What sets Sandpoint apart and makes it such an incredible community? A. The people of our community are wonderful. It’s nice to be able to walk down the street or go to the grocery store and see and talk to people you know. There are many people who are willing to help you out in a moment’s notice. To me, that is priceless. Not to mention we have an amazing ski mountain and beautiful lake. Q. How is the community of Sandpoint so integral to both your business and your family, and how do you strive to be involved? A. For any business, community is essential. As I like to say, it takes two to tango. We try to serve a good, tasty meal for a good price, and it takes the community to desire what you serve. As for my family, it is very essential as well. We are involved in many ways. For example, it has given me the opportunity to be elected and serve as a City Council member. My wife and I have helped with Kick Start Soccer; I also have coached basketball within the community. We want our children to grow up and see the importance of serving and being involved in their community. Further, as Christians, we
want them to learn how to genuinely love people as Jesus did. Q. You were nominated as Sandpoint Living Local’s Finest for 2021 in the categories of Person of the Year, Casual Eats, and Family Owned Business. What does this mean to you? A. Being voted Person of the Year is very humbling to me. I do my best to be a caring member of the community with no reward. This award encourages me to continue to do my best to serve our community. From the business side of things, it means so much for our family. It is truly an honor for us. We have worked very hard to be where we are. We love all the restaurants here, and we are thankful to be a part of this great community with them. I look forward to keeping the legacy going, watching my kids work and be a part of the family business. Q. As a City councilman, what are some visions you have for Sandpoint, and what do you hope to achieve during your time? A. As a growing city, there is much to be done. A goal is to continue to work with fellow council members and staff to do what’s best for the growing community; working within our legal boundaries to make wise decisions. Achievement wise, it is very important for me to continue to do my best to encourage and help community members get involved and be informed. The more we can come together as a community, the stronger we will be—especially during difficult times. Q. What do you love most about Sandpoint and about being a business owner here? A. There is so much to love about Sandpoint. From the beauty of the mountains to the sunsets over our glorious lake. Not only are the
views something to fall in love with, but I also sincerely love knowing so many exceptional people in Sandpoint and the surrounding areas. I love knowing that if I need help, it doesn’t take long to get it. Or if someone needs my help, they are not afraid to ask. To me, that’s a vital sign of having a healthy community. Q. Is there a specific person or moment that has helped inspire you and that you look up to in your own work in the community? A. My biggest inspiration comes from my faith, my wife, and my children. The Lord has called me to love and take care of my family. My wonderful wife works exceedingly hard homeschooling our children and taking care of them while I’m at work (which is a much harder job than what I do). There are also plenty of people in this community I look up to in the food and beverage industry. My father and mother of course, as they have set the foundation for our business. I also look at our community and see people like Justin Dick from Trinity, Bob and his family from City Beach Organics, to name a few. There are many other inspiring people to look up to in our community. Q. What’s been a key moment from the past year, something that you look back on with pride/joy/thankfulness? A. As I look back on this past year, I could write a book on what I am thankful for. I am so thankful to be re-elected to serve as a City Council member. I am proud of our past and current council working together, navigating through uncharted territory. Also, I am so thankful to our faithful customers, keeping us going through a pandemic. Last but certainly not least, I am so thankful to be able to make a living that provides for my family and the ability to live in our wonderful community.

THE SANDPOINT WINTER C A R N I VA L R E T U R N S TO DOWNTOWN AND SCHWEITZER! B Y A B IG A I L T HO R P E
A
fter a two-year hiatus, one of Sandpoint’s most beloved events is back to liven up the gray days of winter. The Sandpoint Winter Carnival will return for its 48th year this February 11 through 27, with over two weeks filled with fun and activities for the entire family, from the streets of downtown to the top of Schweitzer Mountain. Last year COVID-19 sadly halted the continuation of the Sandpoint winter tradition, but it’s back this year with all of the beloved events that have made it a local favorite to look forward to since its inception in 1973. In this, its 48th year (what would have been its 49th had the virus not intervened,) attendees can look forward to a full schedule of events from live music, a pub crawl and, of course, the inaugural Parade of Lights to a host of downhill skiing and festive events up on the mountain, including the beloved “Let it Glow” fireworks show. So as the snow continues to fall and the gray winter days feel colder and longer than ever, mark your calendars for the sure cure to the winter blues, and head on out with family and friends to enjoy the return of family fun and hometown happenings this month, brought to you by the Chamber of Commerce, Schweitzer and local businesses. While events are still shaping up, there is plenty to look forward to and mark on your calendar now. This year’s Winter Carnival theme is “Weird, Wonderful Winter,” and the events kick off on Friday, February 11, with the Parade of Lights downtown, presented by the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. The parade is free for local businesses to join and is a fun family friendly event that brings the community together to celebrate our local businesses and individuals, the start of the Winter Carnival, and all of the fun outdoor events that make our North Idaho winters special. “Sandpoint and Schweitzer Mountain Resort coordinate with events for the Winter Carnival, between the events happening both at Schweitzer and in Sandpoint, there is something for everyone,” says Kate McAlister, president and CEO of the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. “From the kick-off Parade of Lights, followed by a Block Party on Third Avenue by Jeff Jones Square, to the closing event, the K9 Keg Pull down Cedar.” The Sandpoint Winter Carnival offers a host of fun activities to get the community together, but it also allows Sandpoint’s businesses to get out in the public eye and take a direct part in the action. It can be a good boon for business during the winter’s slower season while also providing an opportunity for businesses to reconnect with their customers in a funfilled way that brings the entire community together.
Any business can join in the carnival, even offering their own event to contribute to the celebration. MickDuff ’s will be hosting its annual Cornhole Tournament where locals can battle for the title of Cornhole Champion, and restaurants and venues throughout town will be hosting music throughout the duration of the carnival. The ‘Let it Glow’ Parade and fireworks show is really geared toward families, and watching those little kids ski in their own ‘torchlight’ parade is just so fun. We’ve really missed being able to host this!” says Dig Chrismer, marketing manager at Schweitzer. The Schweitzer Olympics is back with Starlight Racing February 4, 11, 18 and 25, with a special Starlight Finale Party February 25 in Taps with live music and costumes. The theme this year? Snolympics! Teams of five can participate in the race event, with any combo of skier, snowboarder or telemarker, and the top three scores per team each week count, with weekly team scores counting for your final team score. The SARS Western Regional Speed Series will be taking place at Schweitzer February 13 through February 18, but even if you’re not racing, plan to hit the slopes and relax with some après ski live music and drinks at Taps over the weekend after your final run! Winters are long in Sandpoint, but it’s just one more reason we love our funfilled winter paradise, and the Sandpoint Winter Carnival is back to lend some much-needed fun and light to the cold. PATIENCE What’s trending for home buyers and sellers in 2022 By Joshua Nishimoto
T
o love living in Sandpoint, one must perceive change as a fresh start. The only constant is change, so goes the fluctuating housing market, along with living trends based on pandemics and other lifestyle (living and working) preferences. For further insights to these issues and more, this month we turn to real estate agent and North Idaho housing guru Eric Skinner. Skinner is very knowledgeable about the industry and has shared some advice to help navigate the current and future housing market and its rough waters. “Sandpoint, and all North Idaho, is experiencing some serious growing pains,” Skinner said. “The lifestyle we love here has become a desired lifestyle for others following Covid (COVID-19) and other national issues. Unfortunately, the lack of good real estate supply to service the people wanting to move here has seriously increased home sale prices.” For those looking for local housing market prices to go down, they may need to exercise some patience. According to Skinner, considering both labor and raw material shortages, we are looking for supply to rarely, if ever, meet demand any time soon. “Following the period (2008-2012), many builders left the construction industry, so our builders are pushed to the limits to get new product hitting the market to help service the recent demand,” Skinner said. “Most builders at this point are several years out for availability to build new homes. Then when you throw in the instability of lumber prices, and other additional issues such as some materials being hard to get due to manufacturer shutdowns and shipping cargo not making it to port, it has created a multi-level problem.” Housing prices will eventually settle down again. Although they may never be where they were before, Skinner said that he sees the market staying fairly

steady with slight variations, returning to a new state of normal, proving that those waiting for a “good deal” will most likely continue to wait. “I see buyers looking for a good home still having to be patient,” Skinner said. “Good homes and good deals still make it to the market, but you and your agent need to be ready to jump when they hit, because if you don’t, someone will.” The current housing market has led to some new and interesting trends. When interacting with clients, Skinner gets a good feel for which trends will stick and which ones may discontinue: “I see the absurd prices slowing down and going away. I think we are seeing good signs of this already. I’m seeing more and more buyers willing to walk away from properties that are severely overpriced,” he shared. When looking at luxury condo and luxury home living, Skinner was slightly troubled with the number of people in the area and lack of available condos/apartments available. “I do think there is some additional need for condominiums in our area, but I’m somewhat concerned at the numbers we are going to see shortly,” he said. “Density of people increased without proper infrastructure is
going to make some of our problems like parking downtown even worse. Additionally, we are losing several of the great restaurants in our area for the property to be used for condos. Getting a reservation for dinner to your favorite restaurant in town may become a thing of the past for a while.” Along with luxury apartments and condos, one can’t argue that the development of future affordable housing, although much needed, will add to several growing concerns. “Honestly, they scare me a bit,” Skinner said. “I completely agree we need more homes at reasonable prices, but building small units on top of each other, or buildings housing hundreds of people and compacting them so closely, concerns me.” For those looking to purchase their first home in Sandpoint, or to sell one, Skinner offers us his hottest tip: “Buyers and sellers should take seriously the need to hire an agent who knows and services a particular market,” he said. “Take the time to find someone knowledgeable about Sandpoint and the surrounding areas. The effort you put into finding that agent may save you a bundle!”

ou have the option to attend in person or virtually for this year’s Wild and Scenic Film Festival. Benefiting the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness, the event is scheduled for Friday, February 25, offering a curated collection of independent films about wild places and the people working to protect them. “It will be a celebration of wild places, family, and communities built on compassion,” shares Kelsey Maxwell, communications and development director for Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness. “The film festival is one of a kind. This collection of films will not be available anywhere else. So, it’s an opportunity all Sandpoint locals won’t want to miss!” 2022 marks the 17th year of the annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival— the third hosted by Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness. “It’s an annual fundraiser for the Scotchman Peaks,” Kelsey states. “All proceeds from the night go toward trail building, outdoor education, and mountain goat protection in the Scotchmans. Every ticket purchased will be helping to keep our local wild lands open for hikers, hunters, anglers, and everyone else looking explore our rugged backyard.”

Both the in-person and virtual events will be live. Doors will open at 6pm, with the show starting at 6:30pm. In addition, all ticket holders can view the recording of the show for 24 hours after the live viewing. Regular tickets are priced $15 for those who wish to attend in person or virtually. “Ticket holders can also look forward to a raffle and a pre-show reception,” shares Kelsey. “FSPW will be raffling off one epic basket including a painting donated by Ed Robinson, a backpack from Six Moon Designs, and tons more outdoor gear.” For Superstar Supporter ticket holders ($200 each), there will be a pre-show reception hosted at Outdoor Experience. For years now, one event of Sandpoint’s annual Winter Carnival has been a highlight for people and furry friends alike. The K9 Keg Pull garners a delighted crowd every year to laugh and cheer on all sizes of dogs as they make the annual race down a snow-filled Cedar Street pulling empty kegs (or beer cans for the smaller contestants). Amid cheers, laughter and shouted directions, locals and visitors alike gather to watch the spectacle, as some participants charge to the finish line, others delicately taking their time. Besides being a roaring good time, it’s a chance to support the Panhandle Animal Shelter, where proceeds are donated. This year, the beloved event returns to Sandpoint on Sunday, February 27.
