How is your retirement

income taxed?

nce you’re retired, you will likely need to draw on several types of income for your living expenses. You’ll need to know where these funds are coming from and how much you can count on, but you should also be aware of how this money is taxed — because this knowledge can help you plan and budget for your

Here’s the basic tax information on some key sources of retirement income:

Many people don’t realize they may have to pay taxes on their Social Security benefits. Whether your benefits will be taxed depends on how much other taxable income you receive from various sources, such as self-employment, stock dividends and interest payments. You’ll want to check with your tax advisor to determine whether your income reaches the threshold where your Social Security benefits will be taxed. The lower your total taxable income, the lower the taxes will be on your benefits. The Social Security Administration will not automatically take out taxes from your monthly checks — to have taxes withheld, you will need to fill out Form W-4V (Voluntary Withholding Request). Again, your tax advisor can help you determine the percentage of your benefits you should withhold.

• Retirement Accounts - During your working years, you may have contributed to two basic retirement accounts: an IRA and a 401(k) or similar plan (such as a 457(b) plan for state and local government employees or a 403(b) plan for educators and employees of some nonprofits. If you invested in a “traditional” IRA or 401(k) or similar plan, your contributions may have been partially or completely deductible and your earnings grew on a tax-deferred basis. But when you start taking withdrawals from

your traditional IRA or 401(k), the money is considered taxable at your normal income tax rate. However, if you chose the “Roth” option (when available), your contributions were not deductible, but your earnings and withdrawals are tax-free, provided you meet certain conditions.

• Annuities - Many investors use annuities to supplement their retirement income. An annuity is essentially a contract between you and an insurance company in which the insurer pays you an income stream for a given number of years, or for life, in exchange for the premiums you paid. You typically purchase a “qualified” annuity with pre-tax dollars, possibly within a traditional IRA or 401(k), so your premiums may be deductible, and your earnings can grow tax deferred. Once you start taking payouts, the entire amount — your contributions and earnings — are taxable at your individual tax rate. On the other hand, you purchase “nonqualified” annuities with after-tax dollars, so your premiums aren’t deductible, but just like qualified annuities, your earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis. When you take payments, you won’t pay taxes on the principal amounts you invested but the earnings will be taxed as ordinary income.

We’ve looked at some general rules governing different sources of income, but you should consult your tax professional about your specific situation. Ultimately, factors such as your goals, lifestyle and time horizon should drive the decisions you make for your retirement income. Nonetheless, you may want to look for ways to control the taxes that result from your various income pools. And the more you know about how your income is taxed, the fewer unpleasant surprises you may experience.

Will Nicholson looks back on growing up in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, a small town with one red light intersection in the entire zip code. His father purchased a property in Bottle Bay in 1993, and during their family trips to the area, Will learned to ski on Schweitzer and water ski on Lake Pend Oreille. Years later, in 2000, his dad had a beautiful log home built by Caribou Creek, where they vacationed for 17 years.

After graduating from Rider University with a BS degree in business administration, Will spent two years working in aerospace and defense. During this time, he realized that this wasn’t his calling, and soon after, he began pursuing a career in real estate.

Q.What ultimately brought you to Sandpoint?

A. Well, word travels fast. A couple of my dad’s development partners knew I had gotten into real estate and asked me to start working with them in Sandpoint. How could I refuse? Amanda and I were just dating at the time, but we took the leap of faith together, sold our house, packed up our truck, and headed West on a five-day journey to Idaho.

Q.How would you describe the transition to where you are now as an established Realtor® here in Sandpoint?

A. It takes a while to get established in real estate, but with the help of great mentors and working every single day for two years straight, I finally built up a name for myself. Many times, I was first in the office and last to leave. I’ve been in the business for seven years now, and I know I’ve made it past the typical point of failure for all small businesses — and I’m here to stay.

Q.When did you join LPT Realty? And what do you believe makes this brokerage unique?

A. I joined LPT Realty this past February. This brokerage is unique because they use an innovative approach to real estate with a big focus on agent success. With Listing Power Tools (LPT), every listing gets a customized “Power Pack” loaded with high-quality marketing materials. The brokerage not only provides you with those tools, but they have great training and support to help you use those tools in the best way possible.

Q.Amanda has been by your side and on this journey with you since day one. What does life look like for the two of you now?

A. Amanda and I got married in 2020 at the Idaho Club. In fact, we were the first couple to get married in their brand-new clubhouse. We had a live band from Spokane and my college roommate is a singer in a band from Philadelphia; he flew out and sang for hours. It was a pretty spectacular experience.

Amanda spent five years as the bookkeeper at Laughing Dog Brewing until we were blessed to have our son William III in 2022. She wanted to shift gears and work from home, so I was super excited that she got into real estate to help build up my business, which has now become our business and our way of life. I wish we teamed up sooner. Amanda is a pro with contracts and organizing paperwork for each transaction, and I get to focus on meeting new clients and showing homes.

Q.When working with you on a real estate transaction, what can your clients expect? And what aspect do you enjoy most?

A. My clients can expect to receive open communication, responsiveness and knowledge. For sellers, I provide them with an Active Marketing Plan, where the home or property is the core of the campaign, with beautiful marketing customized to the listing and specific marketing directed toward the potential buyers in your area. Direct mail targeting surrounding areas as well as digital marketing to expand reach is included as well.

While Amanda’s favorite part is helping buyers find their perfect home, vacation spot or investment property, mine is helping people market and sell their homes and properties. That’s one of the many reasons we make a great team!

Q.When not busy helping clients, how do you, Amanda and William enjoy spending your time?

A. We love spending our free time outdoors boating, riding ATVs, spending time in nature, playing with our three dogs, and cooking for friends. We travel quite a bit every year to Pennsylvania, Florida, and other fun destinations. We run a small business selling locally made goods on our website PanhandleCo.com. Amanda creates handmade crochet items that are sold downtown. We also volunteer in the community and help our neighbors. Every day is a blessing!

THE CHAFE 150 GRAN FONDO RIDES INTO ITS 17TH YEAR

In the quiet haven of Sandpoint, Idaho, a vibrant community tradition unfolds each year, weaving together the joys of cycling with the noble pursuit of education. Welcome to the CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo, an annual event orchestrated by the Rotary Club of Sandpoint. Now in its 17th year, this beloved affair isn't just a bike ride; it's a movement, a testament to the power of collective action in support of local education initiatives. Summer has arrived and Sandpoint beckons those seeking a scenic and rewarding ride.

"The CHAFE 150 is a Gran Fondo bike ride organized by the Rotary Club of Sandpoint. The 2024 ride is the 17th annual ride, and the mission of the ride over the years has been to support educational programs in our local school district," explains Mel Dick, the driving force behind the CHAFE 150. This encapsulates the essence of the event — an amalgamation of athleticism and altruism, pedaling toward a brighter future for the youth of Sandpoint. What sets the 2024 CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo apart from its predecessors is its inclusivity. "The 2024 ride is unique in that there is a ride and a route for everyone," Mel emphasizes. From the signature 150-mile road ride to shorter distances like the 80-, 40- and 25-mile road rides, as well as gravel routes spanning 55 and 75 miles, and even a 4-mile family fun ride, the options abound. Embracing the majestic landscapes of Northern Idaho and Western Montana, these routes promise an immersive journey through some of the nation's most breathtaking scenery. It's no wonder the CHAFE 150 has earned its stripes as a top-ten scenic ride in the country, attracting cyclists far and wide seeking both challenge and beauty. Furthermore, the CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo isn't just about cycling — it's about community and camaraderie. Riders of all ages and abilities come together, united by a shared passion for both cycling and supporting educational causes. The event isn't just a ride; it's an experience — a celebration of community spirit and philanthropy.

Beyond the thrill of the ride lies a deeper purpose: giving back to the community. "Over the years, the ride has supported a pre-kindergarten

learning program for parents and children and programs of our local school district for students on the autism spectrum, after-school reading and literary programs and currently supports the Book Trust program for K-3 students of the Lake Pend Oreille School District," Mel explains. From pre-kindergarten learning initiatives to support for students on the autism spectrum and after-school reading programs, the impact is tangible. This year, the focus shifts to the Book Trust program for K-3 students — a testament to the ride's evolving mission and its commitment to nurturing young minds. As the event continues to evolve, so too do its safety measures. "All activities are outdoors. Riders who travel via buses to the starting points of the 80-mile and gravel routes are asked to not participate if they are exhibiting any symptoms of illness," Mel points out. In light of ongoing public health concerns, organizers are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the well-being of participants and spectators. Moreover, large signs dot the highways, serving as a reminder to motorists to exercise caution and vigilance — a testament to the community's dedication to safety.

Reflecting on the journey thus far, Mel Dick observes, "We have evolved from one route, our signature 150-mile road ride, to multiple distances and the increasing demand for gravel rides." Indeed, the CHAFE 150 has come a long way from its humble beginnings, growing from a modest gathering of 70 riders to a bustling event boasting over 400 participants. The rise of gravel rides and the embrace of e-bikes signal a promising future, opening doors to new horizons and welcoming riders of all stripes. Yet amidst the feats of athleticism and the thrill of the ride, it's the human stories that truly capture the spirit of the CHAFE 150. "Some of the best stories are watching riders finish the ride and witnessing the joy and sense of pride in their accomplishment," recalls Mel. From the jubilant scenes at the post-ride party to the triumphant finish lines crossed by riders young and old, each tale speaks volumes about the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community. In its steadfast commitment to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, the CHAFE 150 stands as a beacon of hope in the community. "The CHAFE

150 plays a major part in our community health and active lifestyles," notes Mariah Williams, a key figure in the CHAFE 150 committee. Amidst the myriad outdoor events and activities that define Sandpoint's ethos, the ride holds a special place — a testament to the enduring spirit of adventure and the unyielding pursuit of excellence. "If an active outdoors lifestyle is your thing, Sandpoint is the place to be, and the CHAFE 150 is the ride for you!" Mariah exclaims.

As the wheels of progress continue to turn and the CHAFE 150 charts its course toward the future, one thing remains certain: The journey is far from over. With each revolution of the pedals and each dollar raised for education, the community draws closer together, united in purpose and bound by a shared commitment to excellence. For in the grand tapestry of life, it's the collective efforts of ordinary individuals that pave the way for extraordinary change. And in Sandpoint, that change begins with a simple yet profound act: a ride for education. The economic impact of the CHAFE cannot be overstated. Not only does the ride contribute to the education of local youth, stimulating our local economy and strengthening our future workforce, but the event draws tourism. The CHAFE event draws hundreds of participants, along with their supporters or families, from across the region, nation and even internationally, leading to increased patronage for local businesses during the event weekend, particularly in hospitality and retail. In addition, the CHAFE serves as a showcase of Sandpoint’s beauty and the spirit of our community promoting the community as a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts and tourists.

This event is a labor of love for so many. The committee who organizes the ride spends hundreds of hours organizing year-round, and it takes over 100 community volunteers to pull the event off. The sponsors are absolutely invaluable to them. Additionally, the CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo wouldn't be possible without the generous support of its sponsors. These businesses and organizations play a vital role in ensuring the success of the event, providing financial support, resources and logistical assistance. Their contributions not only help cover the costs of organizing the ride but also enable the CHAFE 150 to maximize its fundraising efforts for local educational programs. From local businesses to national corporations, each sponsor plays a crucial part in the CHAFE 150's mission to make a difference in the community. Specifically, the organization extends their heartfelt gratitude to their Platinum sponsors: Litehouse Foods and Like Media, their unwavering commitment to the cause has been instrumental in propelling the CHAFE 150 to new heights. Gold sponsors like Kochava, Ting, KPND Radio, Bonner County Daily Bee, Timberline Helicopters, Martin and Karen Quill along with Jordan and Sarah Hymowitz provide invaluable support, ensuring that every aspect of the event is meticulously planned and executed. Furthermore, the Silver sponsors, including but not limited to Trinity at City Beach, Winter Ridge, and Bonner General Health, exemplify the spirit of community engagement and corporate responsibility. Their generosity enables this event to continue their mission of supporting local educational initiatives, making a meaningful impact on the lives of children and families in our community. Along with, of course, the Bronze sponsors, whose contributions, no matter the size, play a vital role in the success of the CHAFE 150.

Organizations like Matchwood Brewing Company, Schweitzer and Mountain West Bank demonstrate their commitment to philanthropy and community development through their support of the event. Finally, love and appreciation to all volunteers, and partners, whose dedication and hard work help make the CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo a reality year after year. Together, they are making a difference in the lives of countless individuals and strengthening the fabric of our community.

The spirit of philanthropy runs deep in Sandpoint, and the CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo is a shining example of the community coming together for a common cause. Year after year, cyclists and supporters alike join forces to pedal toward a brighter future, one mile at a time. As the wheels of progress continue to turn and the CHAFE 150 continues to evolve, the impact of this remarkable event will be felt for generations to come. Ready your wheels and prepare your soul for this splendorous, scenic cycle experience.

KEEPING COOL FROM the summer heat

Creative patio shade ideas for summer comfort

Is your patio ready for summer? As temperatures rise, finding ways to cool your outdoor space becomes essential. From canopies and umbrellas to natural shade options and more, there are a number of ways to keep your cool during the heat of summertime.

NATURAL SHADE OPTIONS

Utilizing nature’s inherent structures, a variety of landscaping approaches offer natural shade. Strategically planting trees, for example, not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your outdoor space but also provides extensive coverage from the sun. Species such as maple, oak or birch are excellent choices due to their broad canopies. Additionally, incorporating pergolas entwined with climbing plants like wisteria or grapevines can create both beauty and functionality by offering a cooling, sheltered retreat. This method also promotes sustainability while blending seamlessly with the natural environment.

22

CANOPY SOLUTIONS

For those who appreciate hands-on creativity, DIY canopy solutions offer an affordable way to shade your patio. Using readily available materials, these canopies not only protect from the sun but add a personalized touch to your outdoor décor. You can use a basic frame (wood or metal) and drape it with durable fabric, such as outdoor canvas, and suspend above your patio, providing ample shade while allowing airflow. Low-cost fabric canopies (tensioned fabric structures) offer a versatile and budget-friendly shading solution and can be easily installed using basic materials like ropes or poles. Installation can be as simple as securing the fabric to existing structures, such as a pergola or nearby trees, creating a tailored shading experience. This low-cost method allows homeowners to effortlessly cool their patios while complementing any existing décor.

POP-UP GAZEBOS

Pop-up gazebos offer an excellent shading solution for your patio or deck, particularly during summer gatherings. These structures, which come in various sizes and styles, are designed for quick assembly and disassembly. Moreover, pop-up gazebos are highly portable, making them ideal for multiple uses. They provide both shade and coverage from light rain showers. Whether you're hosting an outdoor event or just looking to relax, they offer a reliable and stylish shade solution.

ARBOR AND PERGOLA ENHANCEMENTS

Enhancing your arbor or pergola can significantly improve the shading and aesthetics of your patio. These enhancements not only provide better shading but also elevate the overall ambiance. Consider adding retractable canopies or shade sails, versatile options that allow you to adjust the amount of shade throughout the day, optimizing comfort as the sun moves. Another popular enhancement includes integrating climbing plants, such as grapevines or ivy, with your pergola or arbor. These natural options offer organic aesthetics and contribute to the environment while providing adjustable shade as the foliage grows. Lastly, utilizing bamboo or reed panels can add a tropical vibe and provide immediate relief from direct sunlight. These materials are costeffective and sustainable, enhancing both functionality and ecological footprint.

AFFORDABLE AWNINGS

Awnings are excellent patio shades and offer a valuable mix of practicality and style to enhance your outdoor space. These costeffective additions not only provide essential protection from the harsh sun but also contribute to the aesthetic appeal of your patio or deck. Moreover, installing them is often a straightforward affair, ensuring you can start enjoying the benefits without delay. Retractable awnings, for instance, allow you to adjust the amount of shade as needed, offering considerable versatility, while fixed awnings provide a permanent solution with minimal maintenance once installed.

DIY

UMBRELLA SOLUTIONS

Providing both flexibility and portability, umbrellas are a popular choice for patio shading needs. Market options range from traditional, manually operated umbrellas to advanced, cantilevered models, ensuring adaptation to various spaces. These umbrellas can be easily repositioned, offering maximal utility and optimal sun protection precisely where it is required. Some models also include features like tilting mechanisms, allowing for even greater adjustment throughout the day as the sun's position shifts. From compact, single-table models to expansive, fullcoverage umbrellas, they cater to versatile outdoor settings.

SHADE SAILS

Shade sails are a versatile and aesthetically pleasing option for outdoor shading solutions. Available in triangular, rectangular and square forms to fit different spaces, each is designed to withstand various weather conditions including wind and rain. Installation is relatively straightforward and can often be completed as a DIY project, and they can be tailored to specific size requirements and color preferences. They are also a good choice for creating stylish, modern outdoor areas.

OUTDOOR CURTAINS

An elegant solution for shading your patio or deck, curtains, typically manufactured from durable, weatherresistant fabrics, provide not only shade but also add a touch of sophistication to your outdoor space. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, allowing you to personalize your area while maintaining functionality. Importantly, they afford you a degree of flexibility in your shading needs. They can be drawn closed to protect against the harsh sun or opened to enjoy a breezy afternoon, all while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your patio. They can be installed using curtain rods or tension wires, ensuring they remain secure in windy conditions.

Boom in Real Estate in SANDPOINT BOOSTS ECONOMY

Positive effects for longtime locals

Observing the bustling Sandpoint real estate market is akin to watching a mountain bloom with wildflowers, each property adding a splash of color to the town's landscape. It's a transformative period for the community. For longtime locals, this growth can bring about significant benefits, from increased property values to enhanced local amenities. One of the most immediate benefits of the booming real estate market for longtime locals is the dramatic appreciation in property values. Homeowners find their once modest investments growing in worth, offering substantial equity that can be leveraged for various financial opportunities. This rise in property values can also lead to enhanced economic stability and increased purchasing power for local residents.

The Sandpoint real estate market's growth substantially elevates home equity for long-standing residents. Increased home equity allows homeowners to access additional financial resources for renovations or investments. As property values rise, residents can leverage this increased equity for home improvements, paying off debt or other financial strategies. Elevated home equity also secures a more robust economic position for homeowners, ensuring generational wealth and long-term financial stability.

The booming real estate market creates myriad opportunities for job growth and economic stability, benefiting longtime locals significantly. Workers from various construction trades experience increased demand. This sector's expansion necessitates hiring contractors, electricians, plumbers and other specialized trades, supporting local employment. Furthermore, the influx of new residents drives demand for services, including health care, education and retail. This leads to an expanded job market, thereby boosting the overall economic health of Sandpoint.

Sandpoint businesses enjoy a growing and diverse client base due to real estate-driven population increases. This economic stimulus enables long-standing local businesses to innovate and expand, ensuring durability and regional economic resilience.

Amid Sandpoint's booming real estate market, a surge in comprehensive community development projects is evident. These endeavors often include the enhancement of public amenities, the construction of new recreational facilities and the upkeep of essential infrastructure.

As Sandpoint welcomes an influx of new residents, the town's commitment to "smart growth" becomes crucial. This concept refers to a focus on sustainable, long-term planning that accommodates increased population without sacrificing quality of life. For instance, the improvement of parks and schools not only supports current residents but also fosters a cohesive, well-integrated community.

As Sandpoint's real estate market flourishes, the increased municipal revenue enables noteworthy advancements in local infrastructure, benefiting longtime residents immensely. Enhanced infrastructure contributes significantly to the town's overall quality of life. This includes improved roadways, bridges and public transportation systems, augmented through strategic investments.

Though it can be difficult for any longtime local to witness the changes taking place here in the small town of Sandpoint, it’s time to focus on the positive effects growth can have on the local economy.

‘BIG PROJECT WITH A EXPERIENCE SMALL-TOWN TOUCH’

PANHANDLE ELECTRIC

“My parents (Bryan and Debbie Lewis) and I share similar and humble beginnings of growing up in a rural blue-collar farming community in Ohio and graduating from the same high school,” Evan Lewis reflects. “From there, our paths could not be more different before ultimately joining forces after we gained years of experience that serves us well in starting and running a successful business.”

The Lewis family has called North Idaho home for many years, drawn to the area for the opportunity to plant roots near family in a postcard-worthy small mountain community with endless access to outdoor activities.

Upon moving to Sandpoint, Bryan joined Schweitzer as the senior electrician responsible for leading large electrical projects. His electrical training began before graduating high school, which evolved into a 30-plus-year journey as a master electrician. Over that time, Bryan gained a breadth of experience from wiring custom houses to leading multimillion-dollar electrical projects at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and high-rise development projects in downtown Seattle.

While Schweitzer was growing, North Idaho was as well, resulting in skyrocketing demand for skilled tradespeople. Recognizing the opportunity, Bryan and Debbie realized their lifelong dream and founded Panhandle Electric in 2020.

As the Lewis family looks back, the combination of Bryan’s expertise and Debbie’s decades of experience in corporate leadership roles led to early success for the business. “Before they knew it, my parents were burning the candle at both ends to keep up with demand for expert electrical services in North Idaho.”

While in town for the holidays, Evan offered to provide some “grunt” labor on an electrical project the company had undertaken, which quickly turned into a major life change. “After experiencing the fulfillment from creating something tangible with my own hands and seeing the business opportunity, I left a decade-long career as a business executive and investment banker to become a co-owner, electrician and operations leader for Panhandle Electric,” he shares.

36

Today, Panhandle Electric is owned by two generations of the Lewis family, specifically Bryan and Debbie, along with Evan and his wife Avery. Founded with humble ambitions that quickly evolved, Panhandle Electric now serves Bonner, Boundary and Kootenai counties in North Idaho, and Sanders and Lincoln counties in Western Montana.

“We jumped at the opportunity to work alongside family, provide essential services in a growing community and take our skills and experience to create the company we always wanted to work for but never found,” Evan affirms.

As a full-service electrical services contractor that can lead commercial, residential and industrial electrical projects, Panhandle Electric offers everything from pre-construction design-build services to electrical services for facility additions or remodels, tenant improvements, custom homes, large home renovations, electrical service upgrades, EV chargers, roof de-icing solutions and more!

“We bring big project experience with a small-town touch,” Evan smiles. “As a local team, we are heavily invested in all our projects since we live and raise families in the very community we serve. As a family operated business, we lead with integrity and honesty above all else.”

Panhandle Electric’s electricians stand out as not only experts in their field but also as stewards of the business’ core values of professionalism, follow-through and quality of work. “More than 80 percent of our business is with repeat clients due to our track record of delivering superior results and consistent, white-glove experiences,” Bryan mentions.

When it comes to what the family finds most rewarding from running a local business, it is providing essential services that help the community to thrive. “We genuinely enjoy experiencing the impact of our work directly, whether that is seeing new lights illuminating the office of the Bonner County Daily Bee or riding on the new chairlift at Schweitzer that our team helped to install,” Bryan explains. “The people and local businesses are what makes a community special, and it is an honor to be a part of that fabric for North Idaho while creating long-standing friendships with clients, vendors, partners and other business owners.”

It is important to the Lewis family and Panhandle Electric team to give back to their community. Their team and their families are involved with a variety of nonprofit organizations such as the Mayfly Project, Community Cancer Services, and the Bonner Community Food Bank. “These organizations support causes that are near and dear to our hearts given our personal experiences and their impact in our community.,” Evan notes.

Those in need of an experienced, local company for all of your electrical needs, the Panhandle Electric team is ready and willing to provide premier service with a local touch.

KAMLOOPS AND KOKANEE SAVE SANDPOINT

THE STORY OF THE SUCCESSFUL FISHING DERBY

M

any may not even question the reasoning for the success of tourism in Sandpoint, considering the access to our great lake, mountains and ski resort; but believe it or not, the economy of this town was once endangered. The railroad and timber industries had petered out, but the town made a comeback in which we owe to fish.

In the mid-1940s, Jim Parsons Sr. had returned to Sandpoint from the war while Kamloops rainbow trout were also introduced into Lake Pend Oreille from British Columbia. With Jim’s talent for journalism and

Ross Hall’s expertise in photography, they spread the word about the giant fish in Lake Pend Oreille.

Celebrities such as Bing Crosby, Gypsy Rose Lee, Clyde Beatty and Patricia Munsel came fishing and excited the press. In 1946 the first “Rainbow Days” was organized and, 20 years later, the K&K Derby was ranked among the top 20 national attractions for May. The K&K Derby brought tourism to Sandpoint, and today it raises money for the preservation and protection of the lake and fisheries.
