“OUR GOAL IS TO OFFER A GREAT PRODUCT AND TO BE A BEACON WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, WHERE EVERYONE THAT COMES THROUGH OUR DOORS IS GREETED WITH A FRIENDLY FACE AND A WELCOMING HEART.”

E

ric and Kelly Thompson met on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington while Eric was serving in the Coast Guard, and both had the dream of moving to Sandpoint for many years. Originally both from small towns, each was inspired to create a place where people could come in and feel part of a community, like family. In September of 2020, the couple purchased Kokanee Coffee, fulfilling both dreams. Today, they operate the business as a way to connect with the community and serve one delicious cup of coffee in a warm, inviting environment that is open to all. They roast all of their coffee fresh in house and take every opportunity to pour into others— both caffeine and a helping hand. Q. How has Sandpoint been instrumental in Kokanee’s success and story, and what makes this area such a special place to run a coffee shop and be part of the community? A. The Sandpoint and Kokanee community has truly welcomed us with open arms, which is a true testament to the people within our area. Kelly and I were very transparent about our intentions, which are to elevate God’s kingdom, which has drawn a lot of people to Kokanee. Our goal is to offer a great product and to be a beacon within the community, where everyone that comes through our doors is greeted with a friendly face and a welcoming heart. Kokanee is so special to so many because of those sincere and intentional interactions. Q. How is Kokanee an active part of the community, and in what ways do you give back? A. We are extremely community oriented and like to serve and give back when we can. We like to honor each veteran, military member, police and fire service member with a discount on each purchase. We understand that our freedoms are

not free, and we need to offer a small “thank you.” Within Kokanee’s walls we take the opportunity to pray with people openly and offer a prayer wall for those individual needs. On a larger scale, we also have been graced with the opportunity to work with local churches, Bonner County Chaplains, Life Choices Pregnancy Center, Freedom House, Bonner Gospel Mission, TrustVets and youth organizations such as various Sandpoint school programs and Sandpoint Composite Mountain Bike team. We have been integrated into the fabric of this community by simply seeing a need and using Kokanee as the platform to help to support others. We recently just started doing a monthly veteran feature called Coffee with Vets. This allows the stories of various veterans to reach our community and, more specifically, our youth. It has brought us tremendous joy to be involved with these organizations. Q. What sets Kokanee apart as a local coffee shop? A. We understand that Kokanee has the opportunity to be so much more than just another coffee shop. Coffee is everywhere, and we understand that we have to offer an experience for people to choose us over other establishments. Sandpoint has some amazing coffee and cafés. For us to have the customers we do is just simply amazing. I think the special factor about Kokanee is the intention behind everything we do. Whether it be interaction with each customer, small-batch coffee roasting, homemade soups, baked goods or handstamped “Jesus loves you” on every cup of coffee, each aspect is a recipe to make our customers feel thought of. Our vision for Kokanee is to offer that personal connection with not only those serving you but

the community within our shop. Our customers are truly so welcoming and inviting to all, which is something that is just a representation of the Sandpoint area. It brings us pride to even be a part of the Kokanee Coffee story. There is no denying that it is a special place. Q. How is community central to the vision and long-term goals of Kokanee? A. Community is everything to a sit-down coffee shop, and our community is the reason that Kokanee even exists. It brings us such joy to see a lot of the same faces daily, and we love them like family. Our customers know our kids, go to the same church, pray for us and we pray for them. We are family. Kelly and I love helping families and individuals in times of celebration and crisis. We understand that our long-term goals of expansion and growth will have the community in mind. We would love to expand to an additional location as well as partner with other businesses to elevate the community of Sandpoint. Q. What are some long-term goals for Kokanee Coffee, and what do you hope to accomplish through the business? A. We are aiming to become mission-led when it comes to acquiring our beans from various regions of the world. Coffee is the second-most traded commodity in the world. Most countries are impoverished and lacking a hope of education, health care and self-reliance. We want to do more than just acquire coffee from these amazing countries, we want to offer the hope of something greater through the Gospel. On a local focus, we want to continue to elevate our involvement within our youth sports and social clubs. We want to continue to integrate with other local businesses to help our local community. MAKING STRIDES TO HELP THOSE IN NEED B Y A B IG A I L T HO R P E

ith the holidays in the air and Thanksgiving around the corner, we’re all preparing for the first snowfall and the arrival of family and friends to celebrate all that we hold close. As we’re stocking up our fridges and decorating our tables, now’s the perfect time to stop and look outside our own front doors to consider the many ways we can give thanks by giving back. There are many incredible nonprofits and organizations throughout the community committed to helping those in need throughout the year, and what better time than Thanksgiving to become a part of bringing life, hope and change to those in need? From soup kitchens and food pantries to resource centers, fundraisers and organizations working to help the homeless, there are boundless opportunities to get involved, whether you have time, goods or money to give. It doesn’t have to take 10 hours a week— perhaps you have a day here and there to give a few hours of your time, or next trip to the grocery store you stock up on some extra items that will help feed a family. However you feel led to help, every gift or moment spent goes that much farther to bringing an individual hope. The Starting Point: Resources Whether you’re looking to donate your time or goods, or if you’re someone in need looking for help, the Community Resource EnVision Center makes it easy to get started, uniting nonprofits and service providers under one roof so those in need can come and find the help they need. “Three things that we do here: Get help, get connected and get informed,” explains Linnis Jellinek, executive director of the center. “Getting help is serving clients in need who don’t know where to turn.” Now in its 11th year, the resource center not only helps direct those in need to resources and partners who can help, they’re a great resource for individuals looking to get involved. The volunteer connect program allows people to see various organizations looking for help and volunteers, and find the right fit for their skills, desires and availability. “It really empowers the service community. We’re working together to improve services and provide effective solutions,” says Jellinek. “Anything to fulfill our mission, which is dedicated to bringing hope to people who don’t know where to turn.” The EnVision Center’s purpose is simple: To help people reach self-sufficiency and a sustainable position in life through financial empowerment, health and wellness, and character and leadership development. Currently, the center is working with another local nonprofit to help find a solution to urgent sheltering needs in our community, and there are opportunities for people to get involved in every capacity, whether it’s getting out and volunteering, or donating resources. You can stay connected by visiting SandpointCommunityResource.com to find out more about how to get involved. Go Sandpoint Magazine

Helping Hands Healing Hearts opened in May of 2017, and as of July 31, 2021, has served 1,785 women, men and children through 3,649 visits. The joint ministry of 18 Sandpoint area churches extends a helping hand to the community by offering free food, toiletries, diapers, clothing, houseware, furniture and more to those in need. In addition, the organization offers incredible classes like resume writing, budgeting, marriage classes and more to assist people in bettering their lives. There are no financial restrictions, and HHHH is able to operate because of donations, volunteer work and financial support from individuals and churches in the community. About three months after opening, Helping Hands Healing Hearts was hit with the dire homeless problem Sandpoint faces. After various efforts to house people in homes, a room in the church and even their garage, co-directors Jon and Cathy Pomeroy realized what is truly needed is a transitional living center. “The need for housing for the homeless in this community is greater than most people realize,” explains Cathy Pomeroy. “Seventeen percent of the clients that come through our center are homeless. That translates into 185 adults and 73 children since opening. And that is just our organization.” As a result of a fundraiser and donations, HHHH has been able to sign a contract on two acres of land in Ponderay to build The Good Samaritan Inn—a three-story, 44-studio apartment building with a day center, office and classroom. Clients will work up to paying $400 per month, staying up to two years in order to get their feet on the ground. “While there, clients will take classes on budgeting, life skills, personal hygiene, and be connected to job training, church sponsors for mentoring, and, if needed, mental counseling,” adds Pomeroy. The goal to fund the project is $2 million—a big goal, but one that fills a vital need. Not only are time and goods donations essential to HHHH, financial donations to help fund the homeless transition center are essential. “We, as a community, can do this,” encourages Pomeroy. “The more we help the homeless, the better our community will be.” Individuals can donate by sending a check to Helping Hands Healing Hearts, Sandpoint Church of God on 221 South Division Avenue with GSI on the memo line or by going to QHSandpoint.org; or if you would like to donate items or your time, stop by the location in the back of the Sandpoint Church of God. Feast for the Season As the cold weather sets in, good food and a warm place to eat are more vital than ever, and there are multiple organizations and businesses around our community helping to make sure everyone has access to food. The Bonner Community Food Bank is dedicated to helping provide essential food items to those in need in the community, including food for kids both at school and over the weekend, helping to make sure no child goes hungry. They are always in need of volunteers and donations, and are a simple, easy and vital way to spread some joy and goodness not only this season, but throughout the year. On your next grocery shopping trip, pick up some extra staples and drop them off, or volunteer with your family or a friend one day a month—whatever you can do, it all makes a difference. Multiple restaurants, churches and organizations throughout the Sandpoint area offer free meals every week or month, such as The Hoot Owl Café in Ponderay, the Gardenia Center, Sandpoint 18

Assembly of God, Seventh Day Adventist Church, and more. Check to see if your church or organization has a meal service, and see how you can help. Holiday Cheer Events and fundraisers are one of the main ways nonprofits fund their services, and this holiday season there are some exciting ones we can support right here in our community. Every year, we look forward with anticipation to the annual Festival of Trees fundraiser for Kinderhaven, a community organization dedicated to supporting children in crisis. This year, the event will be virtual once again, with the beautifully decorated trees placed in downtown businesses from December 8 through 11. “We felt it was just too soon to gather in large crowds, and if last year is any indication, we know ‘Tour of Trees, Take 2!’ will again be a huge success,” says Kathy Chambers, board chair and volunteer coordinator at Kinderhaven. A silent auction will be held from December 4 through 11, with auction items available for viewing at the new headquarters at 113 Main Street. “Last year we were humbled and surprised by how many sponsors came forth; many businesses who had not participated before wanted a presence at the Tour of Trees,” adds Chambers. Besides sponsors, the fundraiser is in need of volunteers, donations, tree hosts and decorators, and more. “We are currently looking to replace our vehicle we use daily, and also our 10-person van. These are big expenses for us, but safety has to be our number one priority with our kids. The best help we can get is for our supporters to participate in this once-a-year (and our only) event!” On December 2, the Sandpoint Community Resource Center is holding a holiday gathering from 4 to 7pm, the perfect opportunity to learn more about the EnVision Center, various organizations and nonprofits in Sandpoint, and how you can get involved. It’s a fun time to come out and learn about the new work they’re doing to help address homelessness in addition to other opportunities and needs in the community. There will be live music, a Toys for Tots drop, and a Selkirk Realtors family gift tree where people can grab a family’s name to bless for the holidays. “I just invite people to come out, take a tour and see what we’re doing. Come out and catch the Vision!” smiles Jellinek. Whatever way you choose to give back this holiday season, there are many opportunities through the organizations mentioned here and many others to bless someone in our community with your time, resources or donations. And while this is the perfect time to remember those in need in our community, may we continue to give back not only now but throughout the year.

SEASONS

CHANGE As does the housing market

By Joshua Nishimoto

W

ith last year’s onset of COVID not far off in the rear view, and winter slowly setting in, we are seeing some interesting trends in the local housing market. Interestingly enough, these trends are swinging on opposite ends of the spectrum depending on family size, occupation and overall lifestyle choices. “We’re still seeing many buyers looking to get back to the land and become self-sufficient,” said Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker with Century 21 RiverStone. “This has resulted in homes on acreage selling quickly. The driving factor for this decision is land size and location; the home features are sometimes secondary. On the other end of the spectrum, smaller homes (less than 1,000 square feet) have become the target not only for young professionals who like to travel, but also for people in their retiring years looking for a low-maintenance lifestyle.” As per usual, the winter season brings on a slew of different types of buyers who are looking to hit the slopes, and those interested are finding that there aren’t a lot of available properties at the moment. “Locally, each fall and winter brings interest in Schweitzer Mountain and our ski properties,” Suarez said. “Currently, there is record-low inventory— as of my writing, only two Schweitzer residences are listed in our local MLS. Stay tuned for an update on the Schweitzer market as winter unfolds.” The best thing about seasons changing is that so does the housing market. When compared to other housing markets, Sandpoint retains interest year-round. “It’s really about our lake and our ski resort that makes Sandpoint such a unique and sought-after place to live,” Suarez said. “If you compare

Sandpoint to other areas of the country with this combination, we’re still a great value.” When thinking about buying a home, it’s important to do your research and rely on the team of experts that you have around you. “Try not to let emotions rule your decisions,” Suarez said. “Evaluate and inspect each property carefully to know what you are buying or selling.” For those who are waiting for the market to turn before purchasing a home, the most important thing is to know what you want and think about the most important aspects of a home that you are willing to wait for and what you need right now. “For buyers, this depends on your patience level and ability to continue saving,” Suarez said. “Inflation will likely continue to push pricing up, and interest rates are forecast to increase. The question to ask yourself is how long are you willing to wait and what else can your money be doing for you in the meantime?” For those willing to wait for prices to go down prior to buying their first home, or a new home, there may be some bad news on the horizon, with many looking to other areas for more affordable housing.

“Many buyers have left our market for different areas of the country for more affordable housing,” Suarez said. “Expect that trend to continue for some in their wage-earning years.” On a brighter note, there is more and more low-income family housing available each day. With those looking for something to purchase, there are options, but are they affordable? “Multi-family housing units are being built as we speak,” Suarez said. “They may fill the need for affordable rentals in our area. The question still remains as to whether the local wage will be able to support a home purchase.” For those who are still looking to purchase their first home, there are many resources for helpful information out there. Make sure to shake all of the trees and seek out all the information that is available to you. “Seek advice from local professionals in all aspects possible,” Suarez said. “This includes real estate agents, lenders, insurance agents, financial planners and construction professionals. If the first-time home buyer does not have cash to purchase the home, they’ll likely need financing. Save enough for a down payment, don’t overextend yourself financially, and learn as much as you can before entering the market.”

MARKET REPORT Growing trends in the Sandpoint housing market swing from buyers looking at larger plots of land for self-sustainability, to young professionals who are looking to purchase smaller homes with less upkeep in exchange for travel. Those who are looking to retire are also in search of smaller homes for similar reasons. With Sandpoint’s lake and ski resort being the most attractive aspects of the area, buyers are noticing that there aren’t many options available and are looking elsewhere. On the other hand, multi-family housing units for rent are currently being built. Only time will tell if the local infrastructure remains viable for long-term renters.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO

ACKNOWLEDGE, HONOR AND THANK VETERANS APPRECIATION EVENT PLANNED FOR NOVEMBER 20 By Jillian Chandler

W

ild Horse Trail Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution are hosting a Veterans Appreciation Event on Saturday, November 20, at 2pm. 2021 marks the inaugural year for the event, and veterans in Bonner and Boundary counties, and their families, are encouraged to attend.

Committed to historic preservation, education and patriotism, DAR members believe it is their duty—our duty—to honor and thank those who have served and sacrificed and/or are still on active duty, “giving us another reason that honoring veterans is a matter close to our hearts,” Jessica shares.

The purpose of the event is to honor those members from all branches of services, those who have served overseas and domestically, and those who have served during war or peacetime, and thank them for their service to our nation.

The event, which is free to attend with no registration required, takes place at the Sandpoint Events Center (102 South Euclid Street) in the beautifully restored auditorium from 2 to 3pm. As of press time, two of the three guest speakers had been confirmed: Vietnam War Veteran Dick Goodbehere and WWII Veteran Ellwood Werry. After the program, complimentary coffee and cookies will be served.

“Every year, for both Veterans Day and Memorial Day, the Wild Horse Trail Chapter places flags on the graves of veterans at the Westmond Cemetery,” says Jessica Rorman of the Wild Horse Trail Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. “This year, our chapter wants to hold an event to honor all local veterans, and if it is well attended, we may organize this yearly event.”

32 32

Go Sandpoint Magazine

“In addition to the Veterans Appreciation Event, our chapter is also participating in a program called Wreaths Across America, and in December we will be placing wreaths on the graves of veterans at the Westmond Cemetery,” says Jessica. Anybody interested in sponsoring a veteran wreath, or interested in learning more about the Wild Horse Trail Chapter, can contact them at DARSandpoint@gmail.com.

NOVEMBER fun fact

A Legacy of Greatness

S

ixty-seven years ago this month, on November 11, 1954, a scheduling snafu resulted in the Sandpoint High School football team being scheduled to play two opposing teams on the same day. Legendary SHS coach Cotton Barlow— considered by many to be the greatest coach in Sandpoint history—split the squad, and played Bonners Ferry in the afternoon and Coeur d’Alene in the evening, winning both games. It was almost exactly 48 years after Sandpoint High School held its first interscholastic athletic event on November 22, 1906. Over Coach Barlow’s coaching career, he would achieve a coaching record of 217-85, an average of just fewer than seven wins a year; would coach Sandpoint native Jerry Kramer, who would go on to play right guard for the Packers and be inducted into the Hall of Fame; and was instrumental in building the stadium that would ultimately be named after him, and where the Bulldogs played from the early ‘50s until War Memorial Field was renovated in 2016: Barlow Stadium.
