This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor Ken Wood W ith cryptocurrencies so much in the news, you might be wondering if you should invest in them. But “invest” may not be the right word—because, in many ways, cryptocurrencies, or “crypto” for short, are more speculation than investment. But what’s really the difference between a speculator and an investor? Probably the main factor is the differing views of time. A true investor is in it for the long term, building a portfolio that, over many years, can eventually provide the financial resources to achieve important goals, such as a comfortable retirement. But speculators want to see results, in the form of big gains, right now—and they’re often willing to take big risks to achieve these There’soutcomes.alsothe difference in knowledge. Investors know that they’re buying shares of stock in a company that manufactures products or provides services. But many speculators in cryptocurrency don’t fully comprehend what they’re buying—because crypto just isn’t that easy to understand. Cryptocurrency is a digital asset, and cryptocurrency transactions only exist as digital entries on a blockchain, with the “block” essentially being just a collection of information, or digital ledgers. But even knowing this doesn’t necessarily provide a clear picture to many of those entering the crypto world.

• Volatility Cryptocurrencies are subject to truly astonishing price swings, with big gains followed by enormous losses—sometimes within a matter of hours. What’s behind this type of volatility? Actually, several factors are involved. For one thing, the price of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies depends heavily on supply and demand—and the demand can skyrocket when media outlets and crypto “celebrities” tout a particular offering. Furthermore, speculators will bet on crypto prices moving up or down, and these bets can trigger a rush on buying and selling, again leading to the rapid price movements. And many purchasers of crypto, especially young people, want to see big profits quickly, so when they lose large amounts, which is common, they often simply quit the market, contributing to the volatility.

• Lack of regulation When you invest in the traditional financial markets, your transactions are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the firms with which you invest are typically overseen by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Other agencies are also involved in regulating various investments. These regulating bodies work to ensure the basic fairness of the financial markets and to prevent and investigate fraud. But cryptocurrency exchanges are essentially unregulated, and this lack of oversight has contributed to the growth of “scam” exchanges, crypto market manipulation, excessive trading fees and other predatory practices. This “Wild West” scenario should be of concern to anyone putting money in Thecrypto.cryptocurrency market is still relatively new, and it’s certainly possible that, in the future, crypto can become more of an investment and less of a speculation. In fact, Congress is actively considering ways to regulate the cryptocurrency market. But for now, caveat emptor—“let the buyer beware.”

12 ON THE ATTACK, ON AND OFF THE FIELD by ABIGAIL THORPE Go Sandpoint Magazine RYAN KNOWLES Q&A WITH SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL BULLDOGS' HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
"OUR MOTTO THIS YEAR IS “SICK 'EM”; IT FITS US, IT FITS OUR BULLDOG MASCOT, IT REPRESENTS EVERYTHING I WANT OUT OF THEM AS THEY APPROACH THEIR JOBS, COLLEGE, A TRADE SCHOOL, THE WORK FORCE, PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS. BE ON THE ATTACK, DEMAND A LOT OF YOURSELF, EXPECT A LOT, DON’T JUST SETTLE. DON’T SIT BACK, GO GET IT."
When I first got here, to think we would be the first-ranked team going into the playoffs and being in the state championship—I wanted to do that, but I wasn’t sure of the path that was gonna get us there, other than hard work. I wasn’t sure how long it was going to take, and the boys bought in and got us a long way last year, and the expectation is even that much higher this year.
A. Just being from here, a tremendous source of pride. I heard this from a lot of different people—you've got to move away sometimes to know what you had. When I got back here, I realized we vacationed here every year that I was gone. For the opportunity to coach a team that helped build me and live in a place that we vacation, it’s kind of an unbelievable opportunity. Moving to New York, I didn't know anybody. My wife and I had to carve our life out of nothing. Moving back, it’s the opposite. We have all of our family around us, I have a ton of friends around here. The community is so supportive, they’re excited—it shows in everything we do. When I need something, I have a bunch of resources to go and talk to about getting it done. I have the energy, I just don't always have the resources, but the community does, and they provide that. It's been a great relationship so far.
A. The first year is always tough. I got here late, so I didn’t really have an off season. My dad was the defensive line coach for the first two years. That was definitely a highlight being able to coach with him. The first year was tough, but our ability to beat Lakeland that year and get in the playoffs—that was a really big deal for that team at that time. It was a big step for us as a program, we needed that, and the boys played really
Q.What role has sports played in your own life, and how has this impacted your work in the community?
I try to help out [in the community] as much as I can with the boys. I think it's really valuable for them to get out there. We try to get guys out with the Long Bridge Swim to help out with that. We always volunteer to help out with the Bonner County Fair. Lost in the ‘50s has always been a big fundraiser for us. The boys did a Toys for Tots drive last year and raised $10,000 for the kids. I'm always looking for opportunities to give back—I really challenge them to get out and do this stuff.
A. I've been a jock my whole life—I like sports, it's always been an escape for me. Football has always been a game changer for me. It's always just been who I am. It's why I coach. I know every kid I coach isn't going to coach someday. I hope that they think about it. I hope they love the sport as much as I do. I’ve got a big group of my friends around me—there's guys coaching with me right now that I graduated with, years in front of me, years behind me.
Q.Any particular person or experience who has influenced you most and helped shape how you approach work and life?
Q.What do you hope to help your students achieve in the year to come, both athletically and personally?
A. For every time I lie awake at night worrying about football, there's four times I worry about these boys not being the best people they can be—although it's a little mind numbing thinking that I can raise 140 boys on top of my own two kids. They all get a little piece of my mentoring every day, and that's very rewarding to me. It’s not about the monetary compensation—and every coach across the country will tell you that— it's about the influence.
Q.What do you love most about Sandpoint, and what stands out about the community here?
R yan Knowles played football for Sandpoint High School, graduating in 1997. He went on to play football for the University of Idaho, receive an education degree, and pursue his dream job: coaching. A year and a half teaching and coaching in Seattle, working as a graduate assistant coach for the University of Idaho football team, and then 12 years of coaching at Colgate University in New York later, Knowles had an opportunity to come back to coach for his home high school team. He, his wife and two kids moved back four years ago, and he’s been building the program ever since, carrying on the family coaching torch. When he’s not focused on all things football and the team, you’ll find Coach Knowles with his family, fishing, riding UTVs and enjoying all that Sandpoint has to offer— there are not many places you can go from swimming in the lake one day to a 7,000foot peak the next. That’s Sandpoint for him.
well. The following year we had a solid team that really helped turn the tide as far as the culture. The following year was COVID. I will never forget the COVID year—that team showed up the day we were allowed to come back, ready to work. We went all the way to the semifinals that year and really stepped up. And last year, that was a fantastic team. We fought tooth and nail all the way to the state championship.
Q.What is most exciting/rewarding about serving as head football coach?
Q.What have been some highlights of your Bulldogs coaching experience?
A. I'd say my dad. He's always been a rock to me, backed up by Satini Puailoa, my high school coach. Nick Hull—he gave me my first job as a college coach—was a tremendous influence on me and how I try to run a team and a defense. I'd say my 12 years at Colgate were really influential on me in a lot of different ways. The whole experience in general was invaluable. From an influential standpoint, I’d say my family and my dad.
A. I have a vision I want to see out of this thing all year long. A team is from August to November, but our program is all year long. This whole process about taking a ninthgrade boy to a young adult as a senior. I like to facilitate that process of getting them to mature and get ready for the real world. I want to teach them to be on the attack in everything that they do. In all my years of coaching, the best players and teams I've been around, they don't just play football, they do more. They get great grades, they hold jobs, they hold relationships, they handle their business. I’m really trying to teach these kids to attack life, go do everything. Don’t say, “I can’t do this because I’m doing that.” Do both. Our motto this year is “sick 'em”; it fits us, it fits our Bulldog mascot, it represents everything I want out of them as they approach their jobs, college, a trade school, the work force, personal relationships. Be on the attack, demand a lot of yourself, expect a lot, don’t just settle. Don’t sit back, go get it.

BONNER GENERAL HEALTH WELCOMES
The Sunderland Foundation, a foundation based in Kansas City and started in 1945 that supports capital building projects and helps fund opportunities that grow just, equitable communities, was an early partner with Bonner General. They were instrumental in helping fun the Emergency Room remodel several years ago and also assisted with construction costs within the hospital to advance the new Imaging Center project. Together with the Foundation Board and generous community giving through the 2022 Heart Ball, the Sunderland Foundation helped fund the capital project through the Radiology Department. “All of these generous community partners have allowed BGH to think toward the future. If it was not for the Sunderland Foundation and the 2022 Heart Ball, these changes would not have happened with the speed and efficiency that they have,” credits Holland.
“This area has greater capacity to see patients, and room to grow and add additional mammography and ultrasound machines as needs continue to grow,” explains Daniel Holland, BS RT (R) (CT) (BD) (QM), director of diagnostic imaging, who has worked 10 years as a technologist. “Looking toward the future and anticipating the needs of our growing community highlight the focus and intent of our new Imaging Center.”
The vision of the new Imaging Center is to provide convenient access, exceptional care and prompt testing and results for an evergrowing community.
NEW IMAGINGEXPANDEDCENTER
The Imaging Center was not an overnight project, however; it was a carefully considered multifaceted plan with many moving parts that was made possible through the efforts and assistance of multiple partners.
Located in Suite 277 on the second floor of the Health Services Building, the center offers a wide range of services utilizing advanced technology.
“Our hope is for the new Imaging Center to provide a welcoming, personal patient experience that furthers our mission to ‘improve health, inspire hope and save lives,’” says Lead Radiologic Technologist Katie Cary, BS BR (R)(M), who has been a radiologic technologist and mammographer for eight years.
The new full-service Imaging Department now offers the latest technology in diagnostic imaging, including computerized tomography, 3-D mammography, DEXA, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, MRI, interventional procedures, and eventually Echo diagnostics.
BY ABIGAIL THORPE
On August 1, Bonner General welcomed the first patients to its new Imaging Center located in the Health Services Building. As the population in Sandpoint continues to increase and diagnostic imaging has developed and improved over the years, the need for a new Imaging Center to serve patients’ needs from start to finish became a focus for Bonner General.
Likewise, the addition of a new unit will allow the center to keep openings in the schedule for time-sensitive exams and procedures like biopsies and screening call backs—times when patients might feel anxious and will benefit from quick testing and results. It will also reduce the backlog for screening exams, provide more patient flexibility, and allow patients to schedule appointments at times that work best for them, rather than having to accept whatever appointment is available—a winwin for both the hospital and the community.
The vision of the new center was some time in the making, but the necessity of one was spurred by a growing population in the community that required faster appointment availability in order to deal with an increasing number of urgent and emergent concerns. “How and when we delivered care in the past does not necessarily match how and when we need to deliver care now,” says Holland. There was an immediate need for imaging services to be expanded, and the new Imaging Center not only fills that void, it allows for future expansion as population and services continue to grow.
“I personally feel that a mammogram can be seen as an investment in promoting health and wellness to all women and their families in this community. If a woman comes to our new imaging facility for an exam as simple as a routine mammogram, this is our opportunity to show them what BGH is all about,” says Cary. “If they are happy with the way they were treated, comfortable in their surroundings and happy with their results, I feel like this woman is more likely to return to Bonner General Health for other health-care needs, as well as bring their family members and loved ones to Bonner General Health in the future.”
The growing population of Sandpoint, in addition to the steady growth of diagnostic imaging, highlighted a growing need at the hospital: infrastructure changes that would solve two problems.
AS THE SANDPOINT COMMUNITY
So why now?
Firstly, creating additional usable space within the hospital to expand CT and support for the emergency room and BGH’s regional response to stroke and trauma patients and, secondly, providing a new and efficient space for mammography and ultrasound that would allow for additional growth in the future. “Our vision for this space is to increase access through appointment availability in multiple modalities to allow our services to keep up with our growing community,” explains Holland. “Being able to provide the same level of care and patient experience during a time when our population is growing is an important element of servicing our community.”
CONTINUES TO GROW, BONNER GENERAL ASPIRES TO BRING QUALITY HEALTH OFFERINGS, EXPANDED SERVICES AND A CONTINUED SMALL-TOWN, FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT TO PATIENTS ...
The Imaging Center is now large enough to accommodate a future second mammography unit, allowing the center to expand as it works to meet the needs of a still growing community, but still provides the small-town connection and sincerity that people expect and love about our local hospital.
The new imaging location in the Health Services Building not only allows Bonner General Health to provide quicker and better imaging services, it allows the hospital community to better serve all patients with increased offerings, more space and faster results. “Expansion of the Imaging Center allows Bonner General Health to continue to provide quality, compassionate care to this growing community and its surrounding areas,” says Cary.
In addition to convenient access and quicker testing and results, the new Imaging Center is dedicated to creating a

welcoming environment where patients feel comfortable and cared for during their imaging services. From the time a patient contacts the center for an appointment to when they are greeted at the door and throughout the imaging process, the vision is for patients to feel calm, reassured and professionally cared for. “Our friendly, caring experienced team of registered technologists strive to provide exceptional patient care during your exam, while providing quality images to our team of radiologists,” says SinceCary.itsopening on August 1, the Imaging Center has filled a vital need in the community, while offering a warm, inviting space for patients. “As far as how patients have received our new Imaging Department, some patient comments have been how nice it is to be out of the hospital setting in a more calm environment, cheery with the natural lighting (we have many wonderful windows over here), faster check-in/checkout due to only outpatient exams. This has been a wonderful addition for us as far as patient care for our community," adds Cheryl Weisz, lead mammographer who has worked at Bonner General for almost 25 years.

“WITH INTEREST RATES STABILIZING OVER SUMMER, I EXPECT TO SEE A CONTINUATION OF HIGH BUYER DEMAND, RIGHT UP UNTIL THE TRADITIONAL SLOWDOWN OF THE HOLIDAYS." 22 Go Sandpoint Magazine
“Many sellers who had high expectations for their pricing earlier in the year adjust their pricing to try to sell before winter,” adds Jackie. “Some owners decide not to sell late in the fall season and stay put when the snow flies. Interest rates are still relatively low historically, offering opportunities for savvy buyers.”
What will fall bring to the market? by JILLIAN CHANDLER CHANGE SEASONSOF
Local expert Jackie Suarez, real estate broker for Century 21 RiverStone, has this to say. “This fall will be interesting. Our strong seller’s market has shifted in favor of buyers. Many sellers are adjusting prices downward, and buyers have been waiting for interest rates to stabilize. Also, some people are waiting for the midterm election results before making any large financial decisions.”
As summer comes to an end, and fall makes its way to North Idaho, what does this change of seasons mean for the local real estate market?
According to Nedra Kanavel, associate broker with Kelly Right Real Estate, “With interest rates stabilizing over summer, I expect to see a continuation of high buyer demand, right up until the traditional slowdown of the holidays.
As things heat up during the spring and summer months, making it a prime time to put your home on the market, with more options for buyers, once the fall season begins, the market begins to cool.
“Fall is a great time to sell, for those who want to move on to that next chapter in their life, before winter sets in. Buyers most certainly will still be searching for their piece of North Idaho and hoping to find something before winter as well. For buyers, they may see some homes decrease to their most competitive price this fall, if the home is being sold by an owner who wants to move before winter.”
“If a buyer finds their potential home or investment this fall, I would encourage them to buy now,” she says. “They are most certainly getting it for less than this time last year. Interest rates may go up again next year. Inventory might go down even further, giving buyers less options. We just don’t know.”
As Nedra points out, the past two years have taught us that things in real estate can change very quickly—and often in unpredictable ways.
So, when is the right time to buy? “Each buyer should feel confident financially before making their purchase,” affirms Jackie. “Typically, end-of-season bargains can be found. Spring usually brings more choices to the market, but sometimes with higher prices. This year’s shift to a buyer’s market brings great opportunities.”
This year’s shift to a buyer’s market brings great opportunities.
For those with homes on the market and eager to sell before the snow falls, both Nedra and Jackie recommend some simple ways to draw more attention to your home. “Autumn is a fantastic time to highlight the exterior of your home,” encourages Nedra. For any seller listing this fall, she encourages them to ask specific questions about their upcoming listing photography and make sure quality drone photos will be done. "The gorgeous colors we see all around us can really make a home stand out.”
Jackie suggests having the HVAC systems and fireplaces and chimneys serviced this time of year, and be sure to tidy up your garden spaces and yards for more attractive curb appeal.
As always, those in the market to buy should do their research, engage the help of local experts, and stay aware of current inventory.

The original Sandpoint High School, opened in 1922, was home to generations of high school students, and also where the Sandpoint Bulldogs started their story, before a new high school was built and the old one transitioned to house several small businesses and the Sandpoint Events Center.
A one-time Sandpoint Bulldog named Jerry Kramer, who graduated in 1954, even went on to play as an offensive lineman for the Green Bay Packers from 1958 to 1968.

Home of the Bulldogs
Originally just named the Sandpoint High School football team, the team earned their mascot and name in 1932 during practice, when a toothless white bulldog named Pat started coming to watch the team play. It stuck, and our Sandpoint Bulldogs have gone on to make the community proud.
Today as you drive by Division Street, the home of the Sandpoint Bulldogs stands out proud and much larger than its predecessor.
