Every year we field calls from people who want us to sell their prized collector cars that have been sitting in the garage waiting for just the right moment - When Barrett Jackson says they sold a car just like theirs for $130,000. The reality of it is, in most cases the buyer overpaid because he was overserved and the woman or friend he was with had to be impressed. Another reason is, it was for charity. The ones that are for real, most likely spent $250,000 in order to get the $130,000 sales price. These are mostly number 1 condition cars that have had teams of people working for months, if not years on them. We rarely see a car come to the shop that is a number 1 condition car. SOLVING PROBLEMS WITH MAYOR STRICKLAND City Improvements, challenges, future possibilities BY K. SHAWN EDGAR PHOTOS BY DIANE FETZNER

fter her family moved to the area from Seoul, South Korea, a younger Marilyn Strickland attended Tacoma schools. From Edison Elementary to Mount Tahoma High School, Strickland’s community outlook grew out of public education and her bicultural family upbringing. During her two terms as mayor, Strickland has served as city ambassador on the regional, national and international level. She has also become a well-known speaker at local schools, where she speaks to students of all backgrounds and stresses the need for young people to think beyond their immediate circumstances. One focus for Strickland’s time in office has been to bring new opportunities to underserved students and their families. “I want to help more students who attend Tacoma Public Schools find a way to travel internationally,” she said.

12 REALLL

Strickland has tried to do whatever she can to foster desire and create access for students to travel abroad. This goal is a continuation of her mid2015 success in facilitating a visit to Tacoma by China’s President Xi Jinping. The president agreed to stop by Lincoln High School during his pass-through in Seattle before heading to Washington D.C. Taking the opportunity to suggest a local school visit to Xi’s advance team, Strickland recognized this as the best way of getting folks in both countries to think about building relationships in our much more interconnected world. While visiting the diverse, workingclass school, President Xi surprised everyone by inviting 100 students from Lincoln to travel to China. “These were students who’d never traveled before,” Strickland recalled. “Some had never been on a plane, and just to see how life-changing that experience was [inspired me].”

Strickland said she hopes this event and other connections she’s made internationally will lead to more student exchange programs. Bringing Tacoma onto the larger world stage can provide possibilities for those who often get lost in the shuffle due to limited resources. It is this move toward globally-minded approaches to solving local problems for which Mayor Marilyn Strickland will be remembered. The elected position of mayor is largely ceremonial, since an appointed city manager oversees most of the day-today business of government. Current interim city manager is Elizabeth Pauli. According to the City of Tacoma website, the role of the city manager’s office is to “work with the city council and city departments to ensure effective implementation of city policies.” Showing her determination and strong marketing and outreach skills, Strickland used her platform as “Tacoma’s voice” to connect with other

In collaboration with the College Success Foundation, Strickland’s City of Destiny Scholarships are available to help prepare qualified students to fill highly needed roles in engineering, environmental science, nursing and health technology. The scholarships might also help promote college readiness in K through 12 schools by providing internships. Strickland stresses the age-old chestnut, it’s who you know. Who a jobseeker knows is relevant she said to how successful a job application will be. “That’s one of the things I try to show young people who are a part of my internship

counselor in the 1970s.

In 2015, Strickland participated with the mayors’ conference in the development of and advocacy for Trade Promotion Authority legislation (TPA 2015). This legislation strove to “ensure higher standard objectives for future trade deals.”

The real catalyst said Mayor Marilyn Strickland was an unexpected reunion with Ebersole at a Tacoma civic event.

The conference urged U.S. Senate leaders Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid to adopt Trade Promotion Authority and stressed the “inclusion of enforceable labor and environmental standards, transparency and uniform tariffs,” as well as strengthening provisions for the protection of intellectual property rights. Find out more online at www. usmayors.org. With 10 months left to serve as mayor, Strickland and her team have a “very, very aggressive agenda” to close out her final term. Prior to winning election to the office of mayor, Strickland had served as a city council member for two years. When asked about the inspiration behind her run for city council, Strickland said she was encouraged by friend and mentor, Brian Ebersole. Ebersole, a former Tacoma mayor himself, had been her middle school guidance

After returning from Clark-Atlanta University where she’d received a Master’s Degree, Strickland says she had a chance meeting with her former guidance counselor at the official opening of the theater on the square. “I think I was literally the coat-check person,” she recalled, “and he walks up and I hadn’t seen him in years; we became reacquainted... he really was the person who encouraged me to go into public office.” Ebersole appointed her to the Library Board of Trustees. This was one of many civic engagements and volunteer board positions Strickland held before winning her city council seat. She credits her time as a board member of Tacoma’s Grand Cinema, as well as being a member of the Pierce County Black Collective, for preparing her for public life. program. If you’re going to be with a group of adults for 12 weeks, make some connections so they can vouch for you.” With the donation of city-owned property to several neighborhoods in Tacoma, Strickland’s team launched a much needed community gardens program. The goal—building the largest number of gardens per capita in the U.S. Concerning Identity and Politics “There seems to be this notion,” said Mayor Strickland, “that if you’re a person of color and you’re a Democrat, you must be the most liberal progressive Democrat. And if you’re not, you’re somehow... well, your legitimacy as a Democrat is questioned.” Maybe we are growing beyond the self-defeating oscillations of politics-as-usual. Beyond mere electoral representation that swings between two established and intertwined parties. For certain, it is time to move beyond personality icons who assimilate the words we use to express our needs, our limits, and our frustrations. Their facsimiled echoes will not sustain us. Exploitation isn’t equitable. In 2008, then-councilwoman Strickland performed the duties of delegate for Barack Obama in the lead up to his election. She said

“ COURTESY PHOTO

she’s a lifelong Democrat and feels party loyalty is important, even though in Washington State candidates aren’t endorsed or controlled by party affiliation during primary races.

At the time of writing I was unable to verify her claim through the official conference of mayors website, and could not find a comprehensive roster, or any list of party registration.

“When you’re a city council member in Tacoma you don’t declare a party, so this is a non-partisan job... but I’ve been a lifelong Democrat,” said Strickland.

However, if you look at elected officeholders overall, the party split between the major Democratic and Republican duopoly is close to 50-50. All other parties are currently marginalized and underrepresented.

At the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ winter meeting on January 17, Vice President-elect Mike Pence told the gathering of mayors: “It’s you, America’s mayors, who know the unique problems your cities face better than anyone else, [because] the closest form of government to the American people is local and municipal.” Pence’s sentiment certainly applies to Mayor Strickland. By her estimates, close to 80 percent of the nation’s mayors are registered Democrats. Our urban areas, she said, account for most of this because they tend to be more diverse, and their citizens often have more liberal sensibilities. “If you look at the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ roster, let’s say in the largest 150 cities in America, a lion’s share of them are Democrats,” she said.

In Washington State, a “Top-2 Primary” helps ensure all candidates, regardless of party, are treated equally. Candidates may state the party they prefer. This choice does not imply a party’s nomination or endorsement of the candidate. Another highlight of this type of primary is that voters do not have to declare a party affiliation and can vote for any of the candidates running. At the end of a primary race the top two candidates, those with the highest number of votes, go on to the general election.

inspire other states nationwide. She points out, “Our two-party system has been around for a long time, but in the past people were able to work with each other.” Now, she said, voters are experiencing a new level of frustration with government. And this is leading to “more people forming coalitions outside the two main parties.” An example Strickland gives is the formation of the Tea Party as a reaction to Barack Obama’s 2008 election. Their movement may have been co-opted to some extent by the mainstream Republican Party and its major funders, but at the grassroots level strides were made by underserved segments of the constituency.

In what is often referred to as a “two-party” system, Washington’s primary elections speak to a more positive voting future; one in which all political parties and their candidates are treated equally and fairly.

The recent primary campaign of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is a compelling example of civic organizing and coalition building by an Independent through individual donations. Sanders made progressive headway within the Democratic Party. His substancebased movement spurred coalitions outside the Democrats, as well, with many branching off and continuing on after the presidential primary ended.

Strickland sees a need for this approach and hopes Washington’s primary system will

actually help elect the person who really doesn’t... reflect your values.”

Between several thoughtful pauses she said: “As a voter... you can choose to vote [for] the candidate who aligns with your values... but it doesn’t always mean that person is going to get into the White House.”

She says the conversation ultimately becomes one of, do you want to win an election or don’t you? The electoral system is resistant to change. This makes it difficult for other political parties, often referred to as “third-parties,” to gain traction and win elections.

Beyond this truism, she defends a more strategic method used by many Democrats, which she describes as “making important decisions about the long game.”

“We have a system that is based on the ability to raise money,” she added. “And most people donate money where they think they can have some influence.”

Choosing to vote for candidates who align with your values and who understand the issues, she said, has to be balanced with supporting who’s best for the long game.

Strickland won reelection for her final term in late 2013, with endorsements from U.S. senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray. She was the only candidate that year filed with the state Public Disclosure Commission as running for the office of mayor.

Strickland added, “The unintended consequence of that [trade-off] is you may

According to The News Tribune, in April of 2013 Strickland’s campaign reported raising $35,487. Even though her second term came easily because of endorsements from the entire city council and Governor Jay Inslee, Strickland understands the challenges of the larger political arena. And how, at the federal level, election races are hard fought. She is not committing at this time to running for any future political positions, but says she’s open to many opportunities in the public and private sectors.

Humbled in Humboldt County EXPLORE THE GIANT REDWOODS BY JESSICA HERBIG

G

o south young man. Down the Oregon Coast and through the Redwood National Forest, that is. If you’ve never been, a trip from Oregon through Northern California on Highway 101 shouldn’t be missed. You should be aware this drive isn’t for the faint of heart. The original highway was built to curve its way through the redwoods, so if you suffer from motion sickness, take precautions or the trip won’t be enjoyable at all. It’s all worth it though to see the giant redwoods up close and personal. If you start north of the California border near Brookings, Oregon, you will cruise past the tulip fields. Brookings is a good place to have a bowl of “world famous” clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl down by the harbor before you venture south. Grab some snacks and drinks, and be on your way! The first California city you’ll come to before immersing yourself in the redwoods is Crescent City. The city is rich in history, with monuments to the redwoods and fossilized trees in some of the city parks. They are big enough for someone to walk through the hollowedout centers of them without stooping down or hitting their head. In some of the coastal cities, there are monuments and statues depicting the early loggers with their prize trees, some so large they sawed them in sections

22 REALLL

with crosscut saws over the span of days to fall one giant redwood tree. The Redwood National and State Park in Southern Oregon and Northern California is home to one of the three species of Giant Sequoia that we know as the redwood. Redwoods are the tallest trees on Earth. They’ve been protected since the 1920s from harvest on the California coast and are still home to a variety of wildlife both large and small. Avid birdwatchers can see rare species nested in lower branches along every part of the highway. As you follow the coast on Highway 101, you’ll wind your way through the giant redwoods. The highway was built in such a way as to preserve as much of the old-growth forest as possible. Some of these giants come within inches of the striped highway, effectively cutting off any shoulder. Plan on taking your time, stopping over in some of the designated pullouts they have available and really taking in the majesty of these national parks. Outside of Eureka, you can explore Fern Canyon, draped in ferns, mosses and waterfalls, which was featured in the “Jurassic Park” sequel. It’s like a walk back in time and gives a serene feeling as you walk silently across the mossy ground.

Humboldt County is called California’s Redwood Coast. It is home to the tallest and largest stands of old-growth redwoods, including the tree called Hyperion, the world’s tallest tree at 379 feet. To put that in perspective, it’s nearly six stories taller than the Statue of Liberty. There are many scenic drives through the forests. One of the more well known sections of the drive is through the Avenue of the Giants. This area, along with the area known as Humboldt Redwoods State Park, preserve half of the remaining virgin redwood forests. Avenue of the Giants is a 31-mile stretch of scenic highway that parallels Highway 101 outside of Eureka. If you exit onto this section of highway, there are a few places throughout the drive that you can cut back over to the coast and get back onto Highway 101. You can enter the beginning of the Avenue of the Giants from Pepperwood in the north and Phillipsville in the south. Make time to explore the easy-to-access trails in this area, explore the historic towns, pass through the three larger-than-life drive thru trees, and possibly set up camp along the Eel River in this area, as there’s great swimming and fishing to be had! Make sure to take your camera, your cell phone or your old-fashioned Brownie to capture moments from your trip. The Avenue winds through the Rockefeller Forest, which is the largest remaining single stand of old-growth redwoods. You might also catch a glimpse of the Roosevelt Elk Herds in this area. By 1912, only 124 Roosevelt Elk remained in the area, but after the creation of an elk refuge in the Prairie Creek Redwood State Park, they are common once again and can be seen bedded down next to the highway in certain spots. Everything in this area is majestic and seems a little larger than life. If you’re driving Highway 101 on a motorcycle, lucky you! In Fortuna, you can hit Highway 36 for a 140-mile detour that is considered one of the best motorcycle rides in California. You’ll ride the engineered hairpin turns in the sunshine, creating your own breeze, with great views of the mountains, redwood forest and the coast. Eureka is a family-oriented biking town, with events such as Bikes By the Bay taking place along the Old Town waterfront. Bike clubs and custom builds line the streets to show off their rides. Some hotels and inns even let guests park their rides inside at night. Another must-do on the list of scenic drives down Highway 101 is the Lost Coast Loop, great for motorcycles or cars. It’s a half or full day detour that samples the Lost Coast, considered the longest stretch of wilderness

beaches in the continental United States. You’ll connect with the loop outside of Ferndale and head to Cape Mendocino to reach the shore. You’ll be wowed by the impressive vistas, deserted beaches and tidal pools. Heading south you’ll see the site of the state’s first oil wells in historic Petrolia before looping back up to Highway 101.

Clam Beach is a marked exit off of Highway 101, offering classic beach picnicking, with wide, flat sands as far as you can see. Fly kites, ride horses and go surfing, as much as time allows. Dogs, bonfires and offroad vehicles are all permitted, with restrictions, and overnight camping is available nearby.

What if you want to get out of the car for awhile? Highway 101 accesses some great hikes and more than 100 miles of scenic beachfront for you to enjoy. Agate Beach, Black Sands Beach, Trinidad State Beach and Clam Beach are four great options as you work your way south.

Are you an art lover? The coast is home to some great art walks and galleries, located close to some of the previously mentioned beaches. Eureka, Arcata, Ferndale, McKinleyville and Garberville all play host to talented individuals who put their unique spin on the area where they live, offering it up for the public in beautifully created gallery displays in some of the historic downtown areas.

Agate Beach is about eight miles north of Trinidad. Count on great surfing, kite flying and semi-precious stone hunting as the area is known for revealing agates, jade and moonstone. Add swimming, boating and camping at Big Lagoon, and there’s many opportunities for adventure here. Black Sands Beach is made up of rare black sand and smooth pebbles. It’s located north of the only settlement on the Lost Coast, and promises great eye candy as you explore the unusual rock formations and tidal pools. Depending on the tides, you can hike around the Lost Coast trail to extend your expedition. Trinidad State Beach is great to explore at low tide, especially with kids. They’ll delight in the sea life that is left exposed for them to explore. There’s a natural rock arch and great terrain for the sea kayakers to explore this stretch of coast.

You’ll be glad you visited this part of the country, exploring and soaking up the grandeur of these forests and beaches, so unlike any other in the world. It doesn’t matter if you drive it, hike it, swim the coast, fish, kayak, bike, backpack or more. The important thing is getting out there and living adventurously. Take your family, friends and special loved ones and make memories. Humboldt County beckons you with all it has to offer.

CRAFT BREWERIES

By Colin Anderson

MANY CONSIDER THE NORTHWEST AS GROUND ZERO FOR THE EXPLOSION OF CRAFT BEER ACROSS THE NATION, AND IT’S NOT HARD TO BACK UP THAT STATEMENT.

F

or decades after Prohibition, the once thriving neighborhood brewery struggled to regain acceptance into communities. Choices were limited to mass-produced domestics that varied little in taste and flavor from label to label. By the 1980s, a few home brewers across the country started to make greater varieties and opened up their own establishments. In Seattle, brands like Pyramid, Hale’s, Georgetown and Red Hook were some of the early pioneers of this modern day resurgence. Fast forward to today and it seems there is a new brewery, pub, growler fill station or bottle shop opening in our communities every month. Many consider the Northwest as ground zero for the explosion of craft beer across the nation, and it’s not hard to back up that statement. Craft beer has become such a popular movement in the South Sound that much of nightlife and entertainment now revolves around the industry. When people go out for dinner, they are asking their servers about what local beers are on tap. Chefs and brewmasters are hosting dinners to educate the public on how to pair different beers with different meals. Many of the local breweries accept children, and as it’s discouraged to be belligerent at a local brewery, these young people witness adults being more responsible with alcohol compared to a typical bar environment. A great way to experience several of your local neighborhood breweries is to get on board with the South Sound Craft Crawl. The crawl is a map of 21 local brewers from Gig Harbor, Tacoma, Puyallup, Olympia and more. Download and print a map from the website www.southsoundcraftcrawl.com and bring it with you when you

The exhibit runs through April 23 and features a variety of marketing materials, bottles, mugs and glassware, and a lesson in how the Rainier Brewery began and how European immigrants helped create our now famous wine regions. It wasn’t long ago that our choices were limited when it came to what’s on tap. As more brave brewers experimented with bold flavors and more bold drinkers began to enjoy them, the craft beer revolution was ignited. Our choices today have never been better, and we have the opportunity to find new favorites all the time. If you enjoy a quality craft beer, take the time to visit these breweries in person to show them how much their work is appreciated.

e are fortunate to live in a state where we do not have to travel far to get away from it all. Mountain vistas, salty air and historic towns are all within a day’s drive. With so many choices, we sometimes forget that the journey from one place to another can be just as enjoyable as the destination. The Washington ferry system provides a guarantee that the journey is most of the fun. Our state ferry system has something for everyone, and an island-hopping adventure can be yours in less than an hour. For example, Seattleites can head to Bainbridge Island for an afternoon away, and Gig Harbor and Tacoma residents can be exploring Vashon Island in mere minutes. Even though these islands are sometimes minutes away, they feel more than a world away. Gig Harbor and Tacoma residents can enjoy the peaceful, pastoral scenes and sweeping views

An umbrella policy is a separate policy for things you do which may cause injury to someone else or their property.

W

e hear it a lot, people buy insurance and forget about it. The hope? You won’t have to use it. But then it happens—an accident—in this case a big one. This is exactly what happened to a gentleman who recently visited our office looking to move his insurance. He purchased his car insurance from a well-known national company directly. He never had his coverages reviewed, and he never took the time to question what was in place. Last spring he was in an accident with a motorcyclist. He’s found 50 percent at fault. His coverage limits are quickly exhausted, and he’s left paying $394,000 out-of-pocket to the motorcyclist for medical bills. If you think this is an extreme case, think again. This shows just how important it is to understand your insurance, what it covers, and more importantly what’s missing. What’s Umbrella Coverage and Why Does It Matter?

ARE YOU REALLY PROTECTED?

How an umbrella protects you from more than just rain

BY TREVOR CAMPBELL, PRESIDENT OF INSURANCE SERVICES GROUP

An umbrella policy is a separate policy for things you do which may cause injury to someone else or their property. In the story above, the gentleman didn’t have an umbrella policy, but had one been in place, it would have provided additional money beyond his auto policy to help cover the motorcyclist’s medical expenses. Through the years, we’ve worked with several clients involved in accidents where the coverage available in their auto policy was exhausted and the umbrella policies we provided saved them from selling property, homes, or even retirement assets to help pay the claims. Some of the largest claims result from car accidents, dog bites, boating accidents or even slippery driveways. As important as umbrella coverage are coverage limits.

36 REALLL

Get to Know Your Coverage Limits Washington law requires drivers carry minimums of 25/50/10 - $25,000 in bodily injury per person, $50,000 in bodily injury per accident, and $10,000 in property damage liability per accident. These numbers are just minimums. The gentleman in the accident with the motorcyclist had 100/300/100 coverage limits at the time. His liability limits were exhausted. The insurance company paid out on his limits, and he still ended up paying more than $390,000 out of his own pocket. Imagine if he carried the minimum requirements? When we talk to clients about coverage limits we want them to understand what each number means and why it matters. The accident you’re involved in doesn’t have to be major for your limits to run out. Take Time to Review Now is the perfect time to review your coverages, understand the policies in place, and make sure the people and things you value the very most are properly protected. The last thing you want is to put yourself, your family or your business at risk. Insurance is complicated but that’s why working with an independent insurance company can help. Someone who takes the time to explain the value of your policy, what protections you’re provided, and what can happen if an accident occurs can mean the difference between keeping the things you’ve worked so hard for or losing everything. Trevor S. Campbell, CIC, is President of Insurance Services Group, an Edmonds based independent insurance agency.

March is National Nutrition Month! Are you ready for the challenge? By Heidi Jo Rickard, NTC, Nourish and Revive

T

ake up the challenge and really look at your nutrition. Due to everyone’s bio individuality, we should not all have the same eating style. We are all individuals with different metabolisms, different body types and heritage. There are many local nutritionists in the Pacific Northwest to help you understand the nutrients that your body wants, any food sensitivities you may have or anything else in need of correction. With that said, I have put together a list of recommendations that anyone can use to help start on a healthy eating lifestyle. Make sure that you slowly adapt to this lifestyle change. Adapting too quickly can sometimes become overwhelming. Try these three quick-start steps: STEP 1 - To start off, focus on adding in the healthy foods. By improving your nutritional content, you may immediately find newfound energy, optimism and stress relief. STEP 2 - Next, focus on the healthy eating and shopping recommendations.

Caffeine, alcohol and sodas. Caffeine from dark chocolate and organic teas are encouraged, but in moderation. 38 REALLL

STEP 3 - Then work on eliminating unhealthy foods. Making these changes is easier if you remember that you are making the changes to improve the rest of your life. STEP 1 DO – Drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily. Add in more if you drink caffeine and when you exercise. DO – Eat plenty of fresh vegetables. Try to eat at least one salad or one bowl of soup with vegetables per day. Snack on fresh veggies with hummus, ranch or just plain. Try to eat raw

vegetables every day. Ideally one‐half or more of the volume of the food you eat should be vegetables. Corn and potatoes are not counted as vegetables. DO – Eat fruit in the morning on an empty stomach. Preferably, choose berries, apples and citrus fruit. Eating fruits or sweets with meals may cause bloating. LIMIT fruits if you have candida. DO – Buy whole foods and a rainbow of colors! If given the choice to buy processed or whole food, go with healthy. DO – Take nutritional supplements. High quality, whole food nutritional supplements can help fill the gaps of a less than perfect diet. STEP 2 DO – Chew your foods slowly. This allows for better digestion. DO – Eat at least three meals per day. Add in snacks to balance blood sugar levels. Protein shakes can make an easy breakfast or great snack. Skipping meals often slows the metabolism. DO – Take deep breaths! Do this when you are stressed, bored or just have an extra moment. This helps increase energy and reduce stress. DO – Buy local, organic, grass-fed and freerange when possible. The additional nutrients are worth a few extra dollars. Check EWG.org for the dirty dozen and clean 15 food lists. DO – Eat a more alkalizing diet. This will help to encourage healthy blood pH. STEP 3 LIMIT – Caffeine, alcohol and sodas. Caffeine from dark chocolate and organic teas are encouraged, but in moderation. LIMIT – Gluten – The author of Grain Brain argues that gluten and carbohydrates are at the root of Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, depression and ADHD; and one of the leading factors in weight gain and other emotional issues. LIMIT – Deep fried food, partially‐ hydrogenated oil and hydrogenated oil. LIMIT – Refined sugars. Try to use in moderation: raw honey, stevia, dates and maple syrup. These three easy steps can help you live and feel healthier and happier. Your body is the only place you have to live! Take care of it, and it will take care of you!

UPTOWN DENTAL H

aving trouble sleeping? Do you snore loudly? Maybe your spouse has noticed pauses in your breathing. Is your sleep restless? Do you wake up the next morning with a headache? Are you excessively tired throughout the day? Do you have trouble concentrating or find yourself getting sleepy during the day? If you said yes to any of these, you might have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea affects 5 to 10 percent of adults in the U.S. and can often go undiagnosed. With dangerous symptoms often overlooked and associated with a number of health risks, it’s important to get treatment as soon as possible. A new study from the UCLA School of Nursing now suggests that sleep apnea might even be hurting our brains. They discovered that blood flow to your brain can change if you have sleep apnea. The heart has problems pumping blood to the body and this can reduce the amount of blood (and oxygen) that gets to your brain. Each time a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep, sometimes hundreds of times a night, the oxygen level in the blood drops and that can damage many cells in the body. If left untreated, it could lead to high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, diabetes, depression and other serious health problems. The UCLA study looked at both men and women (with and without obstructive sleep apnea), and used a special scan to measure blood volume and oxygen-dependent signals in the brain. Researchers measured three physical tasks while the participant was awake. Breathing out through a very small tube to raise the pressure in the chest, a hand grip test, and a test where the participant’s right foot was put in icy water for a minute.

Sleep Apnea Does it hurt your brain? By Rhonda R. Savage, DDS

40 REALLL

The breathing test didn’t show much difference between those with or without sleep apnea, however the hand grip and ice water challenges showed people with sleep apnea had a much weaker blood flow response. Researchers believe that the reason that the participants with sleep apnea had weaker blood flow was because the signals to the nerves in the arms and legs had to go through the areas of the brain that control sensation and muscle movement. Because of the damage to the brain that sleep apnea causes, these signals traveled slower than in the participants without sleep apnea. The study also found that the problem was greater in women with sleep apnea, and researchers are now studying to see if there can be treatment that can reverse the damaging effects of this condition.

Affecting Your Daily Life? Snoring isn’t sexy! Stop it! Have you been told you snore? Snoring isn’t normal. It affects your partner’s sleep as well as yours. WEDDING IDEAS ABOUND but which ones to pick will set the tone and perhaps be the first memories of a couple’s new life together. Their wedding will become the touchstone of the vows they took in front of the people they love. Weddings can be as lavish or as simple as you’d like; what’s important is that it’s a special day for you and your spouse. Keeping things light and interesting is a sure bet in making memories. Giving the wedding traditions a bit of a twist will make your celebration unique–from the venue to the flowers and the send-off. They’ll create a mood for your guests–and one to give them something to remember and look back on fondly. The trends this year are an eclectic collection of elegance and simplicity. They are old favorites with a twist. It all depends on how much you want to wow yourself and your guests! Go DIY Planning a wedding is a lot of work in and of itself, but shave off some dollars by making some things yourself! Gather a group of friends and spray paint old wine bottles in different hues–perhaps your wedding color scheme or metallic hues and glitter for use as centerpieces. Then, simply add a flower and some greens to each instead of having a florist design the centerpieces for the dinner tables. Or, get small glass bowls and get floating votives or flower blooms. One can’t escape the pine trees living in the Northwest! Collect pine cones and with a small handsaw, cut into the pine cones to make them into place card holders. Honor loved ones who have passed on with a separate table in their honor with candles and their own centerpiece. There’s so much you can do on a small budget–give your wedding your own handmade touch and save the money for your honeymoon! The Dress Through the years, one can see how dresses have gone through a lifecycle of change–from simple to fairytale to anything goes. The styles for 2017 are still elegant but eclectic too. For years, the strapless gown ruled, but now you have off-the-shoulder short sleeves, quarter-sleeve and full. Styles look like they are a

The trends this year are an eclectic collection of elegance and simplicity. fusion of old and new. Think simple tops and long flowing skirts. Or, lacy long sleeves and sheer-to-the knee gowns. There is short and flirty and long and elegant–all with a beautiful, whimsical blend of fabrics–organza, lace and chiffon in all shades of white or for a newer twist, soft pastel colors. Top off your look with a lacy bolero over your shoulders or an oversized bow at the waist. There’s no reason you couldn’t find your dream dress from this year’s styles. The Locale (Venue) Brides and grooms are moving away from the traditional hotel reception to different venues in settings that lend themselves to a magical day. Decide your favorite locale–is it a beautiful garden? A large Victorian house? By the beach? An old farmhouse or restored barn? There’s a venue for each, so get creative! Having a big reception doesn’t mean you have to get a castle for your venue. Consider a local winery as each has its own personality and space for parties. The Menu Skip the steak and chicken and go for local flavor. What’s a local favorite that you could serve? Is there a farm-to-table catering service? Have some fun designing food bars with tapas style appetizers, a taco bar or even pizza where guests serve themselves. Let them get up and mingle while enjoying healthy eats like fruit kabobs, artisan crostinis or vegetarian spring

rolls. Have a table with a s’mores bar for everyone to assemble their own desserts or other smaller dessert offerings such as finger tarts or raspberry cups topped with fresh whipped cream. Guests will be entertained by the various choices, and it also eliminates the need for servers! The Cake

the photographer acts like a director to stage a scene that appears candid such as of you and your friends getting ready before the ceremony. Don’t think it’s phony. Most of us aren’t used to acting natural in front of a camera, so don’t be afraid to take some direction–you’ll be happy with the outcome! When you’re interviewing photographers, see if they have experience with these trends.

Cakes are still often three-tiered beauties, but the décor is getting a makeover. Pastry chefs can make these memorable desserts look like gold, marble, watercolor, tree bark or stained glass. Or, go in reverse and have a naked cake encased in a clear glaze with the inner filling for show. Top off the cake with some fresh blossoms for a rustic, whimsical look. Is that layered cake too much? Some couples keep it simple and use a regular-sized cake as the centerpiece for the tables. Either way, let the dessert be an edible sculpture to be revered!

Similarly, with videography, there are a number of unique ways to memorialize the wedding. A wedding video can be shot in documentary style to tell a story of the event. Ask about how such a style can be done for you. You’ll be surprised at how discrete videographers can be so as not to be intrusive on the festivities. You can have a photo montage of yourself and your spouse by submitting a collection of photos from each other’s lives. See what your videographer can do for you based on your preferences.

Photos and Film

The Festivities

With the advancement of technology, there tends to come a point where we become nostalgic for “how it used to be.” The photography experts at the SLR Lounge say there is a current trend for the look of instant cameras from our past. Couples often still distribute them for guests to snap their own pics, but they now want that look professionally taken. Ask your photographer about mimicking this kind of film photography through the use of filters or special apps. Couples are also asking for stylized portraits of the wedding party that make everyone look like a high fashion model.

Dancing doesn’t have to be the only form of entertainment. The possibilities are endless when it comes to simple yet fun ways to keep guests entertained and making memories. Photo booths have been around for some time but now with the addition of a video booth where guests record a story, sing or give advice. As the party goes on, see the “other side” of your guests shine!

Another trend is incorporating photojournalistic techniques where

Other ideas include having cartoonists and magicians–adult guests will enjoy them as much as any kid will. Treat your guests to a memento that they can take home or wow them with an entertainer that will send them home happy from a good party. Or, have a candy toss for the kids instead of the garter, give the bouquet to someone special instead of embarrassing shy girlfriends, set up a lawn bowling game outside for guests to play. Whatever you decide on, have fun giving your wedding a twist on a tradition. It will give you and your spouse something to smile about on your anniversary.

From Political to Whimsical Upside down houses a phenomenon drawing tourists By Patty Hutchens

W

hat started out as a political message has become a fun and quirky trend that has people literally turning upside down to make sense of it. Upside down houses are constructed with everything in both the interior and exterior leaving one wondering which way is up. A Polish entrepreneur and philanthropist, Daniel Czapiewski, constructed the first upside down house. He constructed the home as a political message regarding communism, wanting to convey that communism was turning the world on its head. Czapiewski’s creation is situated at the foot of a mountain in Poland and is fully furnished. Built in 2007, the home’s interior and exterior is literally upside down. To enter the home, visitors climb through an attic window and are able to stroll through the house on the interior’s ceiling. Its décor reflects Poland in the 1970s when it was under communist rule. It has been reported that the construction took five times longer than a typical home due to the fact those working on the house became disoriented and had to take several breaks due to the upside down nature of the building and its interior. In the U.S. there are also upside down houses that depict the home of our nation’s president. In Florida and Tennessee, there are upside down versions of the White House, but the largest is in the Wisconsin Dells. From the Oval Office to the White House pressroom, most of the structure’s interior is upside down. The tour also offers many “surprises” along the way giving visitors an adventure like no other. Other places where one can tour an upside down house is in Germany. Built on a six-percent incline, the upside down house looks as though it has literally fallen from the sky. With “upside down” details both inside and out, including a bicycle on the exterior that is upside down, one has the upside down illusion from the moment they walk up to the house until they exit it.

the number is increasing Throughout the world there continues to be an increasing number of upside down houses popping up and attracting tourists from near and far. Some of them, like the original one in Poland, seek to send a message while others are simply for fun. In the town of Lille, France there is an upside down house which is named the “Tombée du Ciel” interpreted as “Fallen from the Sky.” From bathtubs to kitchen tables all hanging upside down, one just may feel as though they had in fact fallen from the sky. Terfens, Austria boasts a unique upside down house designed by Polish architects Irek Glowacki and Marek Rozanski. Constructed over a period of eight months, this home even

has a car in the garage suspended from the “floor” above you. With a desire to convey a religious message, Glenbow Museum in Canada was designed by American artist Dennis Oppenhiem. It is dubbed, as “Device to Root Out Evil.” The structure depicts an upside down church with its steeple planted firmly into the ground, leaving one wondering just how the steeple can serve as the foundation for the much larger top. It has been interpreted to be a church that appears to have been lifted by a heavy force and brought to the church as a method of rooting out evil forces. While some people report absolutely loving the experience of touring an upside down home,

others report a feeling of dizziness almost immediately upon entering. Whether you are an architect, builder, designer or someone just interested in the quirky and whimsical idea of an upside down house, if you go be sure to bring your Dramamine…just in case!

A few essential elements to great curb appeal

LOVE AT

FIRST SIGHT?

By Annie Nye, Interior Designer

T

he exterior of your home is what provides the first impression to any visitors. Whether those visitors are guests, family or potential buyers, the curb appeal is where it’s at and what sets the mood for getting them in the door. Real estate agents will tell you that buyers make their decision within a few seconds of pulling into the driveway of a potential home. If they don’t like what they see outside, they may not even opt to check out what’s inside. “Don’t judge a book by its cover” does not apply to homes! It’s true—I look on Zillow every morning for new listings and potential houses. I can look at the first picture and scroll right past if it doesn’t have the right curb appeal. Everyone is different and looks for what’s important to them, but we can all agree on a few things that help with the outward appearance of a home. First, it should be decluttered. The lawn can’t have a collection of concrete statues, old cars or

62 REALLL

waist-high weeds. Your guests shouldn’t need to wind their way through your collectibles to get to your front door. Keep your lawn and flower beds well-manicured. It shows that you take pride in your possessions. The paint should still be protecting the siding, eaves and soffits of your home. If there is paint peeling, chipping or faded, it’s not doing the job and it’s time for a touch-up. Most of the time, this means painting the whole house, including all the trim, but once it’s done, stand back and look—it’s like a whole new house! This investment is one that pays off. A few items rank high on the list of return on investment (ROI) for the exterior of your home. One idea is adding stone elements to the exterior of your home. This may mean replacing vinyl with manufactured or cultured stone or adding stone to the lower half of any bump-outs or cantilevered areas. Another hot spot is the garage doors. Most of the time this is because the garage doors face the drive, and it’s what people see as they approach your home.

The front door is also something that can make a great first impression. There are lots of options for these, and elements such as glass panels or textured finishes can add a lot, especially when paired with the stone accents and a new garage door! The average ROI for garage and entry doors is 91 percent, so you can splurge on these knowing that you will get most of your money back if you should choose to sell your home. With spring right around the corner, now is the time to start planning those projects. You should also think about fixing up those outdoor entertainment spaces. Last summer I wrote an article on how to create fire pits, outdoor sitting areas and exterior entertainment spaces. Bringing elements of the indoors to the outside with these focal points provides a much larger entertainment space. It’s a space that’s open, roomy, full of fresh air and provides a setting where people tend to be more relaxed. I don’t know about you, but I am ready for summer to get here so I can be outside and be more relaxed. HEY, Mother Nature, hurry up with this spring thing and bring on the summer sunshine!
