riving along the lake, it’s easy to spot the first signs of autumn color on the hillsides. The soft greens of summer are slowly turning into the jewel-tones of fall. As the weather cools, our minds naturally turn homeward, and we long to update our homes for the long winter ahead. And right now, autumn is the perfect inspiration for updating our interiors with color. Cool, crisp mornings, warm fires and golden leaves are the perfect inspiration for current trends. By keeping it simple, we can all afford to add a little bit of autumn warmth to our homes this season. There is no need to go out and overhaul your entire home but to instead find one or two key pieces to breathe some fresh air into your current layout. With larger, more permanent pieces, it’s usually best to stay fairly neutral with your color choices. Flooring, sofas, dining sets, walls, etc. should all remain somewhat “safe” in tone and color. Soft grays, beiges and even charcoal grays are often best. This way, should you decide to change an accent color, it’s as simple as adding some new throw pillows, a fantastic work of art or even a slipper chair in an exciting new color that you’ve been dying to try. So, which neutrals pair best with this season’s ontrend colors? And what are the current “it” colors for fall?
4 SANDPOINT360
Well, as the air grows cooler, the green leaves of summer become laced with the golden tinge of

autumn. That particular shade of green, hovering somewhere between a kelly and an olive, is one of the colors of the moment. It brings to mind our beautiful local forests and pairs nicely with warm rustic wood tones and cool grays alike. Another color that looks just as good inside as it does outdoors is a warm gold. Picture a perfectly ripe pear or yellow autumn squash. Pair that golden hue with burnished gold metallic finishes and charcoal or navy base color, and you have a sophisticated palette that looks right at home as we transition from autumn into winter. Orange is yet another color that epitomizes fall. However, short of a pumpkin or two on your doorstep on Halloween night, I’m not suggesting you add just any old orange into your décor. Picture instead a deep orange hue, bordering on rust, and that’s the look. Pair it with unexpected colors, such as a light, barely there pink or soft silvery gray, and it looks very contemporary and right at home with modern furnishings. Some readers may notice that these socalled “trendy” colors are very reminiscent of the 1970s with the olive green, gold and rust, and you’d be correct! What keeps these colors looking just right for today’s interiors is choosing just one as an accent, rather than adding them to our homes all at once (as we did in 1975). Choose one autumnal color as a highlight and weave it in delicately with your existing neutrals and it will not overwhelm your space. Instead it will invigorate it with the feel of the outdoors. And that’s the look we’re talking about—bringing just a little bit of the outdoors in to remind us daily of the beautiful place in which we live.

Time to put excess cash to work? THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, KEN WOOD
Y
ou’ll always want to base your investment decisions on your own needs and goals. But there may be times when you might consider adjusting your portfolio because of risks and opportunities. Now may be one of those times.
Here’s some background: In recent months, the Federal Reserve has raised short-term interest rates several times and, given its generally favorable outlook on the economy, has indicated it may continue bumping up interest rates gradually over the next year or so. The Fed doesn’t control long-term interest rates, but these rates often follow the lead of short-term movements. However, longer-term rates haven’t yet risen as much as shorter-term ones, which means the difference between short- and long-term rates is relatively small, historically speaking. This doesn’t mean you should make drastic changes to your portfolio. You still need to stick with the asset allocation that’s suitable for your situation, which typically involves owning a certain percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks, and a certain percentage of fixed-income securities, such as bonds. However, if you do have space in the fixed-income part of your portfolio, you may find the higher interest rates offered by short-term bonds and certificates of deposit (CDs) to be attractive. To take advantage of this opportunity, though, you will need to have the cash available to invest. Some people hold too much in cash, waiting for interest rates to rise, or as protection against the risk of a market decline. But holding excess cash involves its own risk – the risk of not investing. So, if you have your cash needs covered, you may want to consider investing any excess cash. To determine if you are holding excess cash, you’ll need to review your entire cash situation. For example, do you have enough cash, or cash equivalents, to create an emergency fund of three to six months’ worth of living expenses? This fund can be vital in helping you pay for things like a major car repair or an unexpected medical bill without dipping in to your long-term investments. And, of course, you need enough liquidity to provide for your lifestyle, including your regular spending needs—your mortgage, utilities, groceries and so on. Also, you may want to set aside enough cash for a goal you want to reach in the next year or so, such as a vacation. But if you have taken care of all these needs and you still have excess cash, you may want to consider putting this cash to work, possibly by investing in short-term fixedincome vehicles now being issued at higher interest rates. And keep in mind that regardless of where interest rates are going, bonds and other fixed-income investments can offer some key benefits to investors. In addition to providing a source of regular income, these types of investments can help reduce the

JEZZA HUTTO - From the moment Jezza Hutto could run, she has been kicking a soccer ball. “I’ve tried multiple other sports, but nothing came close to the passion I have for soccer,” said Jezza, who played on the Idaho State Olympic Development team in 2014 and 2015 and moved in 2016 to Eastern Washington’s Olympic Development team in order to seek a higher level of competition.

A senior, Jezza is currently in the recruiting process and considering Western Oregon and Lewis and Clark but is keeping her options open. As far as academics, she is interested in a variety of subjects including sociology, psychology and communications. “I enjoy the ambiguity of societal issues, and I enjoy being able to discuss the changing patterns of culture,” said Jezza. One of the things she enjoys most about soccer is the sense of community it creates. “Being able to meet new people and coaches through soccer has not only given me so many interesting perspectives but has provided me with some of my closest friends,” Jezza said. Soccer has also taught her to always persevere. “Some of my coaches have always reminded us that our minds are stronger than our bodies, so
the moment it feels like we can’t keep going is when it becomes a mental battle,” she said. “This carries on to life because it helps me be strong willed and self-motivated when it comes to school or regular struggles. I think soccer has made me conscious of my own ability to push through times in which giving up would be the easiest option.” ZANDER MOORE - Sophomore Zander Moore was determined to make the Sandpoint High School soccer varsity squad when he was a freshman, something that is not easily attainable. But after attending every practice and giving 100 percent, he was the only freshman to make the varsity team last year. Not only that, but It was a very memorable season. “Our team went undefeated that season,” said Zander, who scored three goals last season and plays in the defensive back four for the Bulldogs. Although he still has plenty of time to decide on

“I am interested in being a car mechanic or a diesel mechanic,” said Zander of his career aspirations. When it comes to soccer, Zander said it is the competition he enjoys most. “I’ve always found it to be the sport that is the most fun to compete in,” said Zander. “Also, my close friends have always played soccer.” Zander is grateful to Sandpoint High School head varsity coach, Evan McNeley, who has taught him much more than how to be an outstanding soccer player. McNeley has taught Zander the importance of determination and a positive attitude. “Coach McNeley said, ‘It’s not what you do when times are easy, it’s what you do when they get hard,’” shared Zander of the life lesson imparted on him by his coach.
