Onychomycosis, a fungal infection that is evidenced by nails that are thickened, brittle, crumbled, distorted in shape, or dull, has long been a challenge for doctors to cure. But now there is treatment available locally that has proven to be far more effective than the creams, ointments or oral medication many have tried unsuccessfully.

Dr. Jon Fisher, a podiatric surgeon at North Idaho Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Ponderay, began researching treatment options for fungal infections about six years ago. As a surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle surgery, he had witnessed several of his patients struggle with various treatment options, none of which showed long lasting effects. Fisher was familiar with the PinPointe Laser to treat onychomycosis and, although it was FDA approved, Fisher wanted to perform his own research before introducing it into his practice.

“I contacted at least a dozen doctors and clinics and took the information I learned from all of them and came up with my own plan for treating my patients,” said Fisher, who has seen an 80 to 90% success rate.

According to Fisher, the fungi live in a layer of dead skin around the nail, under the nail and in the nail, therefore it is important to treat all components of the problem for maximum results.

Dr. Fisher provides a free initial consultation followed by one treatment during which the laser light passes through the nail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. The results are seen over a 9 to 12 month period as the nails grow out. “The laser is a high dose of UV light. It does not burn you or cause any adverse reactions,” said Dr. Fisher. He sees his patients again at the 4 month mark for a follow up treatment and at 9 to 12 months to monitor progress.

While the procedure is not covered by insurance, patients can use their Health Savings Account, Medical IRA or a Flex Spending Account to pay for the procedure.

Dr. Fisher and his wife Katie moved to Sandpoint from Seattle where Fisher was a resident at Harborview Medical Center. Both originally from the Midwest, he from Minnesota and she from North Dakota, the couple was drawn to Sandpoint by the many outdoor opportunities it has to offer. They have a 20 month old child and a newborn and look forward to raising their children in the community they have grown to love in the six years they have called Sandpoint home.

BY PATTY HUTCHENS. SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR NIKOLE ALAMILLO is no stranger to bulldog fans. Whether you follow track or basketball, her name is synonymous with success.

With one more high school track season ahead of her, Nikole is already a two time state champion and four time district champion in discus. “I was also a district champion and placed sixth in state in shot put,” adds Nikole who is hoping to make her fourth trip to state this spring.

Ranked 8th nationally among her age group for throwing, Nikole has been nominated for the North Idaho Hall of Fame. “I have lettered all four years in basketball and the past three years in track,” she said.

In basketball, Nikole was chosen this year as an all league player for the Inland Empire League and helped the lady bulldogs travel to state, one of the highlights of her bulldog career.

With a 4.0 GPA and an incredible athletic record, Nikole has many options ahead of her for college. Her top choices are Carroll College and Lewis-Clark State College.

Whichever she chooses, she plans on throwing discus and hammer.

Nikole said she will most likely major in chemistry and become a Dental Hygienist.

“I have always wanted to work on peoples’ teeth, and I thought a dental hygienist would be the best fit.”

When asked what her biggest athletic challenge is, her response turns to track and the difficulty of competing in inclement weather. “It is always windy or rainy. It is very hard to throw in the wind; it either helps your throw or hurts it. In my case it hurts it. It’s also hard, and very scary, to spin when the ring is slick.” But even given those obstacles, she would not trade the experience.
