This project takes just a few hours and is a great way for individuals and service groups to provide much-appreciated sprucing up of our downtown! April 16 Daddy Daughter Dance The First Christian Church will be holding a FREE Daddy/ Daughter dance at their facility from 6:30 to 8pm with an Under the Sea theme. Born and raised here, Darling left Sandpoint after high school to join the United States Navy where he sailed aboard an aircraft carrier throughout the world. FOR MANY HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES, graduation from high school marks the end of participating in an organized sport – something many of them have been doing since they were in kindergarten. The athletes work hard, many in multiple sports, and train throughout the year to be the best they can be. Many say that participating in athletics was the highlight of their high school years and they will miss the camaraderie. But for many of this year’s Sandpoint High School seniors, they will pursue not only an education beyond high school but will continue to compete in their chosen sport – something many of them never thought possible. This year, Sandpoint High School has several athletes who have committed to different schools to play at the next level. In girl’s soccer, coach Conor Baranski said there are two seniors, Riley Couch and Ashly Busch, who will play for Spokane Falls Community College in the fall. Other female athletes who have committed to a school include basketball player Madi Schoening who will play for the University of Montana. Madi has been instrumental in the success of the Sandpoint High School girls’ basketball team over the last four years. When it comes to Sandpoint High School football players, a record nine players have committed to or have offers from schools for next year. “If you go back to 1996, we had six guys who went on to play college ball and one who went on to become an Olympian (Nate Holland),” said Coach Satini Puailoa. “We also had six guys in 1997 and in 2003.”

The following players have signed on or committed to play at the collegiate level from this year’s team, a team that took second in state: Colton Engle (College of Idaho), Michael Plaster (College of Idaho), Logan Magro (College of Idaho), Carlos Collado (University of Idaho), Kyle Perry (University of Idaho) Paul Sundquist (Montana Tech), and Jake Timothy (Ashland University). According to Coach Puailoa, quarterback Davan Norris (Montana Tech) currently has three offers on the table but has yet to decide. Also, Sam Johnson (Carroll College) has toured several schools and is currently deciding between Whitworth and Carroll College. “We had about 15 colleges on our campus recruiting these kids,” said Puailoa. “And everyone that has committed so far has been happy with their decision.” The boys’ soccer team also has athletes who will continue to play at the college level next year. According to coach Adam Tajan, Mahonri Hunsaker is hoping to continue his soccer career at North Idaho College where he plans to walk on. “Kyle Hertel has had interest from several schools and is planning to play,” said Tajan of his senior goalie. “At this point he has still not made any official commitments.” While it is hard work and dedication that blessed many of these athletes with the chance to advance to the next level, it is also the commitment and encouragement they receive from their coaches that has played a large part. A heartfelt congratulations to all these seniors and a thank you to the coaches for the influential role you play in so many of the young athletes’ lives.
