Owners Joseph and Lora Cook moved to North Idaho earlier this year from Eastern Pennsylvania and they, along with four of their five sons, own and operate The Shed Center of Ponderay, each working in various capacities. The couple’s other son lives in Ellensburg, WA, and they also have a daughter who resides in Tennessee. Prior to moving to North Idaho, Joseph managed a large shed center in Eastern Pennsylvania where he oversaw inventory that included 130 sheds, swing sets, and both indoor and outdoor furniture. But when Sandpoint High School senior Mikhaela Woodward moved to Sandpoint her sophomore year, she said it was then that her passion for track and cross-country really took off. The reason? “I owe that to the coaching of Matt and Angie Brass,” said Mikhaela. But it’s not just the competition she enjoys; it is the friendships she has made along the way. “I love the camaraderie of our teammates in cross-country. We’re like a big family, and when you have that amount of support you’re able to perform better on all levels.” In addition to maintaining an un-weighted GPA of 3.95, Mikhaela has excelled in her chosen sports. “I’ve medaled at both the Idaho State cross-country and track championships every year since moving to Sandpoint and have three state runner-up titles in track,” said Mikhaela, who is also part of the defending state championship cross-country team.

As successful as she has been, Mikhaela said one issue she has struggled with throughout high school sports is self-doubt. But she credits her coaches and teammates with giving her the confidence she needs to be successful when it comes to competing. “My coaches and teammates helped me gain confidence in my abilities as an athlete, and you can see the difference it has made in my racing,” said Mikhaela.

$ She said her most memorable moment in competition thus far occurred last year when the cross-country team won state. “I don’t think I’ll ever forget that moment,” said Mikhaela. With graduation just around the corner, Mikhaela said she plans to attend Western Washington University and compete on their cross-country and track teams. As far as academics go, she is interested in communication sciences and disorders, environmental science, film, and psychology. “I like learning all the different ways that people communicate and why,” she said. As Mikhaela reflects on her life as an athlete thus far, she is grateful to the coaches who have taught her some very important life lessons. “I’ve learned from my coaches that to be great at something, it requires an intense amount of dedication and passion. You won’t reach your goals if you only go half way - you have to put everything you have into achieving them.” Favorite Food: “I love all food.” Favorite Teacher: “Right now, it would probably be Mr. Smith, my government teacher. He’s really good at getting us to see both sides of an argument from a logical standpoint, and every time I come out of his class, I think a lot about what he’s just taught us.”
