I get asked a lot about how to update that look. And typically, if there’s one area of oak in a house, there’s more… trim, doors, cabinetry, flooring, bookshelves, and of course furniture. Oak was used quite often because not only is it a plentiful wood species, it is a solid hardwood, and not as expensive as some other species. Because oak is such a durable wood, even if it’s 20-plus years old, it’s probably still in great shape, so you may not need to purge everything. Oak holds up well, so it is a wood species that lasts. What doesn’t last is the polyurethane finish that yellows over time, making it look dated. This yellow tone does not follow current color trends, so when asked about how to get rid of it, I can offer a few suggestions. Instead of replacing everything, you can choose which areas are a priority, commit to what you want to change about it, and develop a plan on how to make it happen. There’s not really a product out there that allows you to cover up that aged yellow tone without also hiding the wood grain. Therefore, you can either paint it or refinish it. If you choose to refinish, it means sanding the old polyurethane off completely, which will still allow the wood grain to show off that solid wood product when you’re done. So, how do you update one area without updating all? If it’s the flooring that you want to change, it may just be in need of refinishing. If you have a narrow plank floor and it’s more than 10 to 15 years old, chances are it is solid wood, not like the engineered pre-finished options now available. This type of flooring can be sanded down and refinished. You’ll need to

However, I have been to customers’ houses that have chosen to refinish floors and then applied their budgeted money towards new cabinets and haven’t been sorry.

Trim is another common area where we find lots of oak. Where most people get hung up on painting trim is knowing where to stop. If you start by painting the baseboards, that usually runs into the door trim, which is part of the door jambs, and then you’ll need to paint the window trim to match. Just know when you start this process, it is a commitment and most of the time means your whole house, not just one or two rooms. If you choose to refinish trim, it’s hard work to sand the old finish off if there’s any kind of decorative profile. The easy part is re-applying stain or clear coat finishing it. Unless you plan on doing this yourself, it may be cheaper to purchase new trim to stain and finish with top coat. The other option is to paint over it. Quite a few people mix and match wood tones with paint. It’s perfectly acceptable to paint the doors and leave the trim wood tone or paint the trim and leave the doors wood tone. There are a lot of remodeled homes that have both paint and stain. And actually, there are quite a few new homes as well being built with both paint and stain trim/door/cabinet combinations. Using both paint and wood tones provides flexibility for future changes. Finding that good balance of color can be accomplished without sacrificing what you have and being smart about the commitment you’re undertaking. ASPIRE ANGELS IT HAS BEEN FIVE AND A HALF YEARS since Dr. Joseph Johnson opened his dental practice, Aspire Dental, in Ponderay, and since then he has impacted the lives of many in the community. Whether it’s boosting one’s self esteem with beautiful straight teeth, diagnosing oral cancer so a patient can get the help they need, or providing dental services for someone who cannot afford it, his contributions are meaningful. Named one of America’s Best Dentists three out of the last seven years, Dr. Johnson and his staff of seven work hard to earn their superior reputation. His business has tripled since he started his practice, and he is currently searching for an additional dentist to join his team. Dr. Johnson is here for the long term as is evidenced by the recent purchase of his building and extensive remodel. “We invested in state-of-the-art equipment,” he said emphasizing his desire to bring his patients the latest technology. One such improvement is handheld x-ray machines. “It provides better imaging and is safer,” said Dr. Johnson. “It allows us to stand right beside the patient while the x-ray is being taken thus minimizing the number of x-rays taken.” Another newly purchased piece of equipment also allows him the ability to do implants right in his office. And if you think going to the dentist has to be a stressful experience, think again. Their new patient chairs are memory foam and leather. “We actually have patients who fall asleep in the chair,” said Dr. Johnson. They also provide neck pillows and a massage chair to relax even the most anxious patient. In a few months Aspire Dental will implement the Six Month Smile program. It allows patients to improve their smile with straighter teeth in just six months time through invisible braces. It has done much to boost the confidence of many adults who have gone through life being self-conscious.

Aspire Dental enjoys giving back to the community through its Aspire Angels program. The staff nominates people they think are deserving of free dental service; people who may have fallen on difficult times and have not been to the dentist for a long time. “We have had five or six over the last 18 months,” said Dr. Johnson. One of those Angels was a high school student who was self conscious and rarely smiled, not wanting to show her teeth. After donating approximately $12,000 worth of work, Dr. Johnson saw her transform into a confident young woman with a beautiful smile. “She had considered dropping out of high school, but is now looking at colleges and wants to intern with me as she is considering a career in dentistry,” said Dr. Johnson, who also has donated time and supplies to Kinderhaven, the Selkirk School and the recent Convoy of Hope.

PAYTON BOKOWY At 15, Payton Bokowy has already made her mark in the world of swimming. She was nominated for the North Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame as a freshman and has already earned four state titles. Payton was named MVP her freshman and sophomore years and will serve as team captain for 2016. “I began swim lessons at the age of three and started competing at the club level at age seven,” said Payton, who is a straight-A student and is enrolled in five honors and AP courses. Payton’s goal is to swim for a competitive Division 1 school. “I am going to start my college visits over spring break to help narrow down my choices,” said Payton who has a recruiting site set up. “It’s fun to see when colleges look at my profile and start following me!” Payton credits her success to her coach Mike Brosnahan, with whom she has been training for 12 years. “I also began dry land training at The Shed with Jen Merwin a couple of years ago,” said Payton emphasizing that her swim and dry land training have to be timed just right. Payton enjoys the competition and camaraderie that swimming gives her and is grateful for the support of not only her teammates but all the swimmers she has met. “I have made so many friends from other teams that I would never have met if I hadn’t started swimming competitively.”

JACK REEVES A sophomore at Sandpoint High School, Jack Reeves knows what it takes to compete and succeed. Jack is one of the few sophomores who is on the varsity basketball team and is one of the state’s top golfers – all while maintaining a 3.9 GPA. Over the last two summers Jack’s accomplishments in golf have included placing sixth at the Washington State Junior Championship, winning a tournament in Arizona and winning the Idaho State Junior Championship. Having done all this while still a sophomore, Jack’s future goals are very realistic. “After high school I plan to attend a Division 1 college. My goal is to receive a scholarship to play golf at the collegiate level,” said Jack who adds that he would also like to one day compete on the PGA Tour. “I also would like to keep connected to the game of basketball when I get older, whether it is coaching or something along that line. I have such a passion for the game and I would want that to continue.” While Jack has had injuries along the way, it has not deterred him from pursuing the sports he loves. “When you have to sit out during games or tournaments because of these injuries, it makes you work that much harder to come back stronger and better than you were,” he said.
