CrossFit training is based upon a workout system of constantly varied, functional movements executed at a high intensity. The functional movements utilized are natural, multi-joint movements that require the body to work as a unit instead of in isolated parts. After all, daily tasks such as picking up a bag of dog food or shoveling snow rarely involve a single joint moving independently. The CrossFit objective is for participants to become proficient in a wide range of skill categories. These categories include cardiovascular endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, accuracy, and balance. CrossFit is unique in its dedication to lack of specialization. Elite
athletes who specialize in certain sports often have large gaps in their overall fitness. The marathon runner dominates endurance, but can lack strength. The power lifter is incredibly strong but often lacks agility and endurance. CrossFit prepares participants to excel in their general physical preparedness, their ability to be ready for the unknown and the unknowable, with a main goal of improving their overall fitness and health. CrossFit’s greatest quality, however, is in the community that is created when men and women of all fitness levels, ages, and from all walks of life are able to participate in the same sessions. At CrossFit Sandpoint we have businessmen, housewives, teachers, children, high school and college athletes, and even grandparents who are all able to complete the same workouts but at their own level of difficulty and intensity.
Classes here always have two different levels of programming for the day’s classes, all conducted under the supervision of at least one CrossFit coach. Our Level 1 program is geared towards beginners and our Level 2 program is for more advanced athletes. These levels can be infinitely modified and tailored for an individual’s needs or limitations. A typical CrossFit class lasts an hour, with portions of class devoted to warm-up, strength, conditioning, mobility and stability. The best way to decide if CrossFit is for you is to drop in and try a class. Our 10am Saturday class is great for beginners, but generally any day is just fine for your first class. t was four years ago when Matt Neuman attended a six week apprenticeship in Mammoth, CA where he learned the art of building custom skis. Since that time his business has exploded, and his creativity has been the talk of ski mountains worldwide. Matt and his wife Sierra own ULLR Ski Company and Gear Exchange in downtown Sandpoint. Located on Second Avenue right off Pine Street, the couple opened their store on Black Friday this year. Matt and Sierra have been in the business of the great outdoors for many years. Matt has been a ski guide, certified bike mechanic, is a Wilderness Outdoor First Responder, and is a self described ski bum. He has also designed and built bike trails. Together the couple helped to revive the Central Idaho Mountain Bike Association. Matt started building custom skis four years ago in McCall, ID and already has a following all over the country and into Canada. “We use all USA made materials,” said Sierra. “Everything we put into our skis is manufactured right here in the U.S.” The custom designs allow people to create and personalize their skis in a way like no other. Some of their custom skis are designed with simply a colored resin finish, but there are countless opportunities for creating your own unique design. One restaurant owner had designs of bacon on his skis. Others have chosen maps of their favorite ski area. And why not find a tax write off for those custom made skis? They hope to become a four-season business catering to the year round outdoor enthusiasts who also enjoy camping, biking, hiking, kayaking and more. “We want to encourage the community to have fun and participate in sports they love,” said Sierra.

alk into Sandpoint’s NAPA Auto Parts store on Larch Street and you will not only find a vast inventory, but you will also have a chance to visit with one of their highly trained professionals.
Owned by Andrew and Susan Fingel, NAPA has been a family tradition for over 30 years. Susan’s parents purchased it in 1981, and over 17 years ago Andrew and Susan purchased it from them. Almost 3 years ago, they added locations in Priest River and Newport, WA. “There is a great amount of knowledge among our staff and we have always had the philosophy that customer service is our number one priority,” said Andrew. His Sandpoint staff has over 225 combined years of experience in the automotive and parts industry. NAPA – Sandpoint has a tremendous inventory - from dress up items for the interior and exterior of your vehicle, to parts for your small engine, ATV, tractor, lawn mower, or boat. They have you covered from head to toe – or from bumper to bumper. Still, with that great inventory, if a part is not in stock, it can be ordered from any of the NAPA warehouses across the nation. In most instances, the local store will receive it the next day from the Spokane warehouse. Andrew and Susan take pride in their business and have worked

hard to build relationships with their loyal customers. “A loyal customer will go out of their way to come see you because you have taken care of them,” said Andrew, adding that loyalty is what he and his staff strive for every day. And it has paid off. Ten years ago NAPA national began to rate their stores on a five star rating system. Since then, Sandpoint’s NAPA store is one of only 58 nationwide that has received a five star rating 8 out of 11 times. “And we are on track to do it again this year,” said Andrew. The rating system is based upon customer service, inventory, knowledge of employees, and more. Susan and Andrew have two children, ages 12 and 14, and are very involved in the community. Andrew has coached each child in a variety of sports. Susan is the founder of the Sandpoint MOPs group, a group where mothers of preschool age children can connect, and involved in MOMSnext for mothers of school aged children. Project Healing Waters Local Vets Come Together to Focus on Fishing - By Colin Anderson In the bottom level of the VA hospital in Spokane, a group meets weekly. Some might call it therapy, others might see it as counseling, but it’s clear the members of this group see it as camaraderie. Each Tuesday at 9:00am veterans and volunteers gather to tie flies in anticipation of the upcoming fishing season. These vets are part of a national organization called Project Healing Waters which teaches everything about fly-fishing to recovering warriors and disabled veterans. Participants learn fly tying, casting, and rod building, and when they’re ready to put their skills to the test, they’re paired with local guides who volunteer their services to those who have sacrificed for all of us. At today’s group there are seven vets representing nearly every branch of service. Some served in Iraq, others in Vietnam and Korea, and on this day ninety-one year old Lieutenant Colonial Francis Leslie, a World War II bombardier, stopped in to see his son Rob help his fellow vets tie a few flies. Two men are in wheelchairs and two others have lost their vision, but with the help of volunteers each is able to create a great looking bug that could fool just about any rainbow, brown, or cutthroat. Norm Scott heads up the Spokane program, one of one hundred and fifty seven programs across the country. He’s been with Project Healing Waters for about a year and a half and has watched it grow from something very minimal to helping more than 50 local veterans. “Our volunteers really drive this program,” said Scott. “By the end of the year, ten of us will have logged more than two thousand hours helping these vets have something else to think about than the aches and pains.” Nationally more than eight thousand veterans have taken part in the program
and volunteers have logged more than one hundred and twenty thousand hours this year alone. National organizations such as Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly Fishing Clubs have pledged their support to Project Healing Waters, and with a paid staff of just five, more than ninety-five percent of all donations go directly to the veterans. Feathers, hooks, rod blanks, and other equipment come from local businesses and local fishermen. Drift boats, rafts, waders, boots and more are provided by guides who are passionate about the program. This past year the Spokane program went on nine trips including two that were televised on the show ‘Trout TV.’ They’ve fished the Northport, Coeur d’Alene, and Yakima Rivers and hope to get to the St. Maries and St. Joe this upcoming summer. All transportation, tents, cabins, meals, and gear are provided at no cost. Upstairs in a slightly smaller room a group of female veterans is tying as well. While not as large a group, these women are clearly passionate about tying flies which is evidenced by the massive amount of feathers on the table and a bit quicker pace than their gentlemen counterparts downstairs. There
are smiles and jokes, but also thankfulness when the program is brought up. One member mentions that she’d probably be wasting away in the woods somewhere if she hadn’t found this program which gave her a focus. The weekly get together is scheduled to last two hours, but some will tie well into the afternoon. This room is where the men’s group started and outgrew and these women hope to see their numbers increase as well. Norm Scott is planning the upcoming season and anticipating more participation and more days on the water. He’s also planning a few more lake trips to accommodate those in wheelchairs or those who can’t get around as well. He’s always on the lookout for additional equipment, volunteers, guides, and of course funding. Project Healing Waters does not receive any government funding and relies on private and corporate donations to keep the program going. While you should practice caution when driving no matter the season, it’s important to take extra precautions this time of year to prepare yourself and your vehicle for nighttime driving. As the days get shorter, and inclement weather descends upon us, Firestone Complete Auto Care provides the following tips. Develop a habit to make sure your tires are properly inflated, rotated and in good condition. Make sure your lights and mirrors are clean and properly positioned. Incorrectly aimed headlights can temporarily blind other drivers and reduce your ability to see the road. Properly aligned mirrors also reduce blind spots. When in doubt, turn on your headlights. Even if they don’t help you see better, they’ll make it easier for other drivers to see you. Use high beams sparingly. Live in an area with high fog? It’s not a good idea to use your high beams. Instead, you should use
only your low beam headlights, since high beams reduce your ability to see. Some newer vehicles even come equipped with special fog lights. Maintain your ability to see well and adjust your vehicle’s interior lighting if necessary. If streetlights cause a lot of glare, dim your dashboard lights and use your sun visor. Avoid using any other light inside your vehicle. Switch your rearview mirror to its night setting. By changing the angle of the reflective surface, the lights reflecting in your mirror will appear to be dimmed. Clean your windshield inside and out. Keeping your windows clean -- especially the windshield -- is crucial to road safety. Wipe down your windows each time you wash your car, and refill wiper fluid regularly. Whether it’s in the bright of day or dead of night, you should always take the necessary precautions to ensure that you’re driving safely and that your vehicle is road ready.
