WINDOW COVERINGS

•Sheet Vinyl Earthscapes Sheet Vinyl Starting at .99¢ Sq. Ft.

THERE ARE FOUR COMMON reasons people buy window coverings – privacy, sun control, energy efficiency and aesthetics. Lucky for those people shopping for window coverings, we have them all covered – literally! (Pun intended) If you haven’t shopped for “blinds” or window coverings in the past 15 years, you are missing out. So let me tell you about a few of the perks. I’ll also say that if you are building a new home, go look at window coverings now so you can plan ahead. Some builders have it figured out and include a budget amount for blinds with their construction loans. That way, when you move in and have blown all the money on the house, you aren’t left standing in your new fishbowl wondering how to pay for window coverings. Most people buy window coverings because they need privacy, but do you realize that blinds have multiple functions. Not only do they provide privacy, but they block ultraviolet (UV) rays and save our interior furnishings and flooring, and they also help keep our homes warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer. Plus, they can really lend a hand in the interior finishes department. Some are uber contemporary with wood and metal blends. Some are more formal with sheers and tilting vane for privacy, and some are strictly functional and tuck up out of the way when they’re not doing their job. Technology has played an important part in the window covering world, not only with product advancement, but also with smarthome integration. You can literally raise and lower your blinds from your smartphone or tablet while you are overseas. If you didn’t prewire, no worries, they can be battery operated. (Requires a battery changed-out once a year) For privacy, look into top-down bottom-up

LOOKIN’ GOOD options. This means that the blind is attached to the top of your window, but the fabric not only lowers to completely cover the glass, but then the top part continues to lower so that you can see out and let some natural light in. There are numerous options that control the sun and block UV rays. The most common are screen roller shades. These come in different opacity levels. For example, a 1 percent openness will block 99 percent UV, 10 percent openness blocks 90 percent UV and so on. The rule of thumb with these is that whatever you can see out during the day is what people can see in at night when your lights are on. If you want privacy, this isn’t your best option. If you want a cooler house and your interior furnishings to last longer, this option is for you.

Bring crazy fast fiber Internet to the Sandpoint area.

The other most popular window coverings are cellular shades, or sometimes referred to as honeycombs. They are called this because the cell construction is similar to a honeycomb. These are the most energy-efficient window covering available because they trap air coming from the exterior into your home. They trap that cold air out during the winter and during the summer, they reflect the heat back out. There are other options that involve tilting vanes, sheers, wood, shutters, aluminum and vinyl. All of these come with lots of color and texture options, so believe me when I say there is something for everyone. Lifting systems range from corded, to cordless, to remote controlled. All are state-of-the-art and are tested to make sure they meet strict safety codes for children and pets. Go to your local showroom to give them a try. Like a car, we encourage you to test drive them before you buy.

TEAMWORK FOR WELLNESS Chiropractic care treats more than just an aching back BY PATTY HUTCHENS

TEAMWORK. THAT IS THE APPROACH that Dr. Hans Steidl takes when working with his patients. As a chiropractor and owner of Steidl Family Chiropractic, Dr. Steidl uses a manual, hands-on adjusting technique that is often coupled with home and self-care exercises so his patients can maximize their recovery. “We love working with people of all ages and various conditions, “ said Dr. Steidl of his passion of helping people on their journey to wellness. Steidl Family Chiropractic prides itself on giving each and every patient 110 percent and getting them to feel better in the least amount of time possible so they can return to their normal daily routine. And while some chiropractic clinics do not bill insurance, Steidl Family Chiropractic does accept some insurance and Medicare and Medicaid. “We also have an affordable cash price which surprises some people as it is often just a little more than what an insurance co-pay costs these days”, says Steidl. “Medicare and Medicaid patients need to know too that they do not require a referral to get chiropractic care, they can just call us and come in.” While chiropractic care used to be a treatment that few pursued, the last several years there has been a sharp increase in those opting for chiropractic treatments and seeing relief from a multitude of symptoms. In fact, Dr. Steidl shares that one may be surprised to learn that chiropractic care has helped improve the discomfort of pregnant women and may help improve childhood conditions such as colic and ear infections. “We can get results and improve patients’ symptoms,” he said. While he has been practicing in Sandpoint since September of last year, Dr. Steidl moved to his new location at 1205 Highway

2 in April and opened under the name of Steidl Family Chiropractic, a reflection of his desire to help patients from newborns to seniors. Steidl first lived in Sandpoint from 2007 to 2010 and returned in 2015 to the town he loves to call home. His wife, Jessica, is a Sandpoint native, going from being a Northside Husky to a Sandpoint Bulldog. “We have two kids and there’s not a better place to raise children,” said Dr. Steidl. While Dr. Steidl said he has had various mentors who have helped him in a variety of ways, he credits Jessica with being the reason for his success. “She has worked in the front office of two different chiropractic clinics,” said Dr. Steidl. “She is my biggest cheerleader and the brains behind all business activities.” He also credits Jessica with encouraging him to go into the field of chiropractic care. Jessica had worked in chiropractic offices and knew her husband wanted to pursue something in the medical field. “She told me she thought I would be great at it,” said Dr. Steidl. “She planted the seed.” Dr. Steidl is pleased to be back in Sandpoint and has already integrated himself into the volunteer community. A self-proclaimed sports fanatic, Dr. Steidl coached Kick Start Soccer this spring. “What a blast it is to coach two to four year olds. It’s a riot!” he exclaimed. He also was selected to be the director of the Rec League Soccer program that takes place in both the fall and winter.

MARK KENNALLY: “ONE ONLY GETS AS far in life as they are willing to make the effort for – this is not only a lesson for runners but for anyone.” This is what senior Mark Kennally, a track and cross country runner, said is one of the most important lessons he has learned from his coaches.

“Track is my first love, but when I moved to Sandpoint, the cross country team became a natural transition for me, and I have grown to love both sports,” said Mark. In the fall, he plans to attend college in Bozeman where he hopes to compete in track and possibly even as a decathlete. As far as a career choice, Mark is interested in aeronautics and engineering. “I love flying and plan to complete my private pilot’s license training as soon as possible,” said Mark adding that he is also interested in software engineering. His biggest challenge athletically has been in overcoming his fear of not having the build of a distance runner. “That has been a blessing and a curse, but never an excuse to let up on running,” he said. Mark loves the competition running brings and echoes an expression of Steve Prefontaine, in international track star. “A race is a work of art that people can look at and be affected in as many ways they’re capable of understanding.” This is something Mark aims for when he competes. Mark has learned a great deal over the years and one lesson he will take with him is this, “If one isn’t doing as well as they want to be doing, they need to assess their choices and align those choices with their goals.”

CORI MCCLELLAND: FOR SENIOR CORI MCCLELLAND, she knows what it takes to excel in athletics and academics. As Salutatorian of her class, Cori has run varsity cross country and track all four years at Sandpoint High School. “In my sophomore and junior years, my team won the Idaho 4A State Championships and this year we placed second. I was a captain my senior year,” said Cori who plans to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where she will pursue a career that involves statistics. “I don’t plan on running on their team, but I will definitely continue to run! After high school I want to run longer distances, so I definitely see lots of marathons in my future.” Her junior year was difficult as she found early in the year that she was iron deficient. It took her several months to get her levels to where they should be, and she lacked energy. However, she said her mental strength grew tremendously. Cori credits her coaches Matt and Angie Brass with creating a supportive team atmosphere.
