No longer will Bill and Nancy Clatworthy and their chocolate lab Snickers greet you, but instead new owners Brett and Joy Batchelor are the ones behind the counter eager to help you with whatever your needs are – shipping, packaging, post office boxes, printing and more.

Brett and Joy purchased the UPS Store and took over effective January 1st. They bring with them over 25 years of combined experience in the print industry. They both worked at the Olympian in Washington for a number of years before departing on an adventure to see the country. They teamed up driving a semi for 4 ½ years, covering a total of 1.5 million miles. “We were on a route that took us across every major mountain range in the U.S.,” said Brett.

Brett took a job with Coldwater Creek as a senior designer while Joy managed the couple’s new business, Busy Beaver Graphics.But when Brett overheard Bill Clatworthy mention that he was retiring and wanting to sell the UPS Store, that all changed. He went back to the hospital where Joy had just given birth to the couple’s son Levi and told her about the potential opportunity. They moved forward and are thrilled with their decision. They take great pride in the downtown store, which is both clean and professional. “They have even used a photo of our storefront on the UPS website,” said Brett of the quaint brick building on Cedar Street. But don’t let the UPS name fool you. The store provides much more than shipping services.They also have packaging services, mailbox rentals and printing services. They offer what they refer to as a small business tool kit where they will print business cards, a banner and flyers for businesses that wish to promote their service or product.

For Sandpoint High School senior Matthew Burgstahler, the most encouraging words he has heard during his years as an athlete came from Matt Brass, the coach of the SHS cross country team. “One of Matt’s most resonating quotes was, ‘Don’t view hard work as a punishment, instead see it for what it is, the opportunity for self improvement.’ In my mind there is no better way to state this point,” said Matthew. As a highly competitive and driven individual, Matthew said his strength is his work ethic, and his biggest weakness is the pressure he puts on himself. But it is clear to anyone who has ever seen him play in any of his multitude of sports, that his work ethic has translated into success. With 13 varsity letters - 4 in soccer, 3 in basketball, 3 in track and 3 in band -Matthew could very well have a total of 16 by the time he graduates this spring. During his junior year his soccer team finished first in state, something that Matthew said was the most memorable moment in his sports career thus far, and in 2013 he was named to the 2013 4A IEL soccer team. He is definitely a leader, serving

But his accomplishments extend far beyond the world of athletics. “I was awarded an AP Scholar award for an AP test average of 4.5, and I carry just over a 4.4 cumulative GPA,” said Matthew who is currently ranked second in his class. Matthew enjoys both math and science, which may explain why he is interested in becoming a physician. “I have been surrounded by the profession my entire life, and I believe that the human body is an incredible creation that should be cared for,” said Matthew. He hopes to continue with track and field in college and is currently exploring St. John’s University in Minnesota, Pacific in Oregon, Puget Sound, Carroll College and Washington University in St. Louis. But the road hasn’t always been easy for Matthew. He tore his meniscus during the summer between his freshman and sophomore year. “After extensive rehab I was able to play soccer again in October, but this injury taught me more about perseverance, dedication, and hard work than anything else in my life up to that point,” he said. He said his favorite sport is typically whatever he is playing at the time, but if forced to choose, he would give a slight edge to track and field. “In track and field you reap the benefits of hard work. In my other sports, soccer and basketball, there is always the risk of an upset even when everything is going your way. But in track it is just you and the clock.
