MODIFY FORM, MINIMIZE IMPACT PROPER RUNNING FORM AND INJURY PREVENTION BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY
WITH THE WARMER WEATHER, many folks in the Inland Northwest are most likely lacing up their shoes and getting outside to take take a run and enjoy this beautiful outdoors. Most runners can agree that running is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding activities in which to participate. But unfortunately, it is also an activity that comes with a high chance of injury. Some studies show that as many as 79 percent of runners suffer from a running related injury each year. There are many ways in which a runner can minimize chance of injury, one of which is modifying running form to minimize the impact on the body. There are basically three phases in the running gait, each of which can be broken down into several different segments. There are differing views among therapists how to define and label the phases of gait, but in general, it is agreed that there is pre-landing phase, followed by an impact stage, and finally, a toe-off phase. During each of these phases of gait, there are considerations runners can make to get the most out of stride and to minimize impact for injury prevention. In pre-landing, the brain sends a signal to muscles to prepare for impact, which causes the muscles to contract to stabilize the joints. In this phase, good posture is key. This means keeping your upper torso straight with lower back not arched and head directly over shoulders. Arms are bent at 90 degrees, relaxed at your side to aid in trunk stability. Having poor posture can cause a runner to lean back, which leads to over striding and increased impact upon foot strike. To aid in good posture, it is important to keep a strong core by doing core strength and stability exercises.
4窶ジWW.SANDPOINTLIVINGLOCAL.COM
B E H E A LT H Y The impact phase begins with initial contact of the foot and takes the runner through midstance ending at toe-off. Some runners land with a heel strike, but a more efficient running gait is to land on the mid foot or forefoot and then roll onto the toe. One way to minimize impact is to shorten stride length which promotes midfoot and forefoot contact and helps decrease overall ground reaction force. Another way to decrease this impact is to be mindful of landing softly. This can be reinforced by plyometric exercises where the runner completes a series of jumping movements focusing continuously on light landings.
Bring crazy fast fiber Internet to the Sandpoint area.
In toe-off, the hip goes into maximal extension. If hip flexors are tight, runners are more apt to excessive strain and arch in the back. Having flexible hip flexors and strong gluteal and hamstring (hip extensor) muscles can help maximize extension to get the most out of the stride during this phase. Getting a professional gait analysis can be very beneficial for any runner to help determine where weaknesses lie within their stride and what exercises or stretches can be done to help correct any problems.

CREATING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE Experience and creativity launch company into successful Sandpoint start. BY PATTY HUTCHENS AFTER LIVING AND WORKING in Colorado for several years, David Rains and his family discovered paradise. And Sandpoint is fortunate he did. “We have lived here in Sandpoint just over a year. We had tired of the traffic, crowds and the fast pace of our former town,” said Rains. “When we found Sandpoint and first visited, we instantly knew we had found a place to call home forever.” With a degree in Landscape Design and Horticulture as well as over 20 years of experience, Rains has launched his own business, Highcraft Landscape and Sprinkler, LLC. His extensive experience coupled with an honest work ethic made Rains successful in his former hometown and are sure to launch his business into success here as well. “As a new resident and business owner in Sandpoint, I hope to build trust and lasting relationships throughout the community,” said Rains. “ I just care about doing a good job and making my customers happy.” With great respect of people’s time and money, Rains said he prides himself on showing up on time and honoring the agreements he makes with his customers. “I never tack on extra surprise expenses right at the end; you will know beforehand exactly what it will cost,” he said. Highcraft Landscape and Sprinkler, LLC offers all aspects of landscape design and installation services, as well as sprinkler systems, landscape lighting, outdoor kitchens and outdoor living rooms. It’s that type of extensive services provided that allows Highcraft Landscape and Design, LLC to tie all of your outdoor design together – from irrigation to plants to outdoor entertainment. And it’s Rains’ passion for his work that shows in his client’s’ end result.

301 Cedar St. #105 (Entrance on 3rd Street) 208.263.5125 flourishsandpoint.com “I love what I do,” said Rains. “I love to work hard and be creative.” Rains is married to Misty who is an aspiring school teacher and they have two children, Sean who is 8 and Kaley who is 5. Together the family loves to spend time outdoors skiing, biking and playing on the lake. “Sandpoint fits our outdoor lifestyle perfectly,” said Rains. “We have made several great friends, and everyone is so nice here. Many days I wonder if I died and went to heaven.” And while he takes great pride in working hard and maintaining an old fashioned work ethic, he, like many in our community, believes in finding a good balance between work and play. “I like to work hard all week, then take the weekend to spend time with my family and generally enjoy life,” said Rains. “In this business it’s important to rest and recharge your batteries.” Eager to give back to the community they now call home, it did not take David and Misty long to volunteer their time and talent. Misty helps out at the kids’ elementary school and also gives of her time to their church, St. Joseph’s. As for David, he has been helping out some at the Baldy Disc Golf Course and has done some work on the trails for off-highway vehicles (OHV). And he plans on doing even more. “ I would love to get involved with the Healing Garden and the City Arboretum. For a plant geek like myself, these are fantastic places to spend time, and an asset to our town,” said Rains. “I am also constantly picking up litter, it’s become an obsession, I can’t see litter and not pick it up. Sometimes it’s those little things that can make a big difference.”

SENIOR CAROLINE SUPPIGER knows what it takes to succeed in life. Her hard work and dedication to academics and athletics has propelled her to being named Valedictorian of the class of 2016, a member of two state soccer championships and to being named captain of the varsity tennis team for the last two years. And if that isn’t enough, she also served as the Idaho Association of Student Council’s President where she organized regional and state conferences for 900 students throughout the state. “I have always been involved in leadership and have loved every second of it,” said Caroline, who is still undecided as to where she will attend college. “I am not sure exactly where this passion can fit into the real world just yet, but I am thinking international business or political science as a college degree.” Getting the most out of her academic experience has always been important to Caroline. “I plan to play intramural or club sports in college but nothing too competitive. I want to focus on my schoolwork,” she said of her future plans. If there is one lesson that sports has taught her it is that in order to fulfill a common goal, trust is essential. “You have to be able to completely trust your teammates and share the responsibility equally with the whole team.” It is a lesson that will serve her well in life.

JACOB WILLIAMS: SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL senior Jacob Williams likes adventure. Whether it is wrestling his opponent on the mat or riding a bull or horse, he gives it all he’s got. Jacob has placed at state three times as a wrestler and has been a state runner-up as well. “I enjoy the fight,” he said of the sport. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury left him unable to finish off his season this year, but it will not stop him from pursuing his other passion – rodeo. “I’m fourth in Washington State for bareback riding in rodeo,” shared Jacob, who competes in Washington to keep from having to travel to Southern Idaho for competitions. So what is it that would attract someone to riding a bull or bareback riding? “I love the freedom,” said Jacob. Looking ahead Jacob plans to either go to lineman school or attend college in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he hopes to be on the rodeo team. He eventually wants to own his own ranch. With injuries having been an obstacle, Jacob said he has learned an important lesson through it all. “When you think you’re done, and you can’t fight anymore, you can. It’s just that simple. Keep on digging, no matter where you are in life, keep on fighting and the outcome will be positive,” he said.
