Revitalize Your Kitchen

Give your kitchen a fresh look and feel by embarking on a fall-inspired kitchen makeover. Start by updating the cabinets with a new coat of paint or staining them in rich, warm hues. Consider replacing outdated hardware with modern fixtures to add a touch of elegance. Upgrade your countertops with durable and stylish materials like granite or quartz, giving your kitchen a luxurious and functional makeover. Enhance the lighting by installing new fixtures or adding under-cabinet lighting for improved visibility and ambiance. Don’t forget about the backsplash—choose tiles in autumnal colors or opt for a nature-inspired pattern. Finally, add decorative touches like seasonal centerpieces or a cozy breakfast nook, complete with comfortable seating and warm lighting. With a kitchen makeover, you’ll create a space that is not only visually appealing but also conducive to preparing delicious meals and gathering with loved ones during the autumn season.

Create a Cozy Fireplace Area

As the temperature drops, creating a cozy fireplace area becomes a top priority. Consider updating your fireplace with a fresh coat of paint, choosing warm, earthy tones that evoke the essence of autumn. Enhance the visual appeal by installing new tiles or a stone surround that complements the color scheme. If you don’t have a fireplace, explore options for a gas or electric insert that provides both warmth and a charming focal point. Arrange cozy seating nearby, complete with soft throws and plush pillows, to create a comfortable nook where you can curl up with a book or enjoy quality time with loved ones. A revamped fireplace area will become the heart of your home during the autumn months, radiating warmth and coziness.

Boost Energy

Efficiency and Maintain Exterior

Prepare your home for the changing seasons by focusing on energy efficiency and exterior maintenance. Inspect windows and doors for any drafts and seal them to prevent heat loss. Upgrade insulation in your attic and walls to ensure your home remains comfortable throughout autumn. Install weather stripping around doors and windows, and consider replacing outdated thermostats with programmable or smart thermostats to optimize energy usage. On the exterior, inspect the roof for damaged shingles, clean out gutters, and trim tree branches that could potentially cause damage during storms. Give your home a fresh coat of paint or stain to protect it from the elements and enhance its curb appeal. Don’t forget to aerate the lawn, apply fall fertilizer, and plant autumn flowers for a vibrant and inviting exterior. By addressing energy efficiency and exterior maintenance, you’ll ensure your home is ready for the autumn season.

Create an Inviting Outdoor Retreat

Maximize your enjoyment of the beautiful autumn weather by transforming your outdoor space into an inviting retreat. Install a fire pit or patio heater to extend outdoor usability into the cooler evenings. Create comfortable seating areas with cozy outdoor furniture, adorned with warm-hued cushions and blankets. Consider adding string lights or lanterns to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Enhance the cozy atmosphere with fall-themed decorations such as pumpkins, gourds and autumn wreaths. If you have a garden, plant late-blooming flowers or add autumnal plants to create a vibrant display of colors. An outdoor retreat will allow you to savor the beauty of the season, host gatherings with friends and family, or simply relax in nature’s embrace.

PLANT LATE-BLOOMING FLOWERS OR ADD AUTUMNAL PLANTS TO CREATE A VIBRANT DISPLAY OF COLORS.

DIY fall décor ideas using indoor and outdoor elements

Nature’s Harvest in Your Home

Fall is a time of bountiful harvest, colorful leaves, and the unmistakable aroma of nature preparing for winter. The beauty of the season naturally lends itself to inspiring and resourceful home decorations. Utilizing objects both from inside and outside your home, you can create heartwarming accents and centerpieces that truly capture the spirit of autumn. So, let’s dive into six simple yet stunning ways to decorate your home with the season’s signature warmth and vibrancy.

25 september/october 2023 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL

Natural Leaf Garlands

Celebrate autumn’s colors by crafting garlands from fallen leaves. Each leaf, unique in its shape, hue and size, contributes to creating a vibrant garland that encapsulates fall’s beauty. Explore your creativity by arranging them in a gradient or random pattern. This handmade work of art, draped over a fireplace, along windows, above doorways or on a staircase, breathes life into your spaces. It’s not just a simple, costeffective decoration, but a fun and engaging activity that can involve family or friends, instilling a sense of seasonal spirit and camaraderie. Don’t forget to preserve the leaves first by ironing them between sheets of wax paper; this ensures your garland retains its brilliant colors longer, extending your enjoyment of this stunning piece of autumn artistry.

01 02

Twinkling Autumn Lights

As daylight fades earlier in the autumn months, add a warm glow to your décor with twinkling string lights. Encase these tiny shimmering bulbs in mason jars interspersed with colorful fall leaves or wrapped around gourds and pumpkins for a captivating evening spectacle. Highlight a bookshelf adorned with your favorite autumnal keepsakes or interlace them within your natural leaf garlands to add a bit of sparkle to the night. Opt for string lights in warm shades of orange, red or gold for an extra touch of fall festivity. They offer an enchanting way to maintain a cozy radiance in your home, illuminating the magical side of autumn.

Pinecone Décor 03

Transform the humble pinecone into versatile décor pieces. Larger pinecones make natural candle holders that bring a rustic charm to your spaces, while smaller ones, adorned with a bit of glitter or paint, are perfect for hanging ornaments, adding a festive touch to your home. Consider baking them to bring out their natural aroma. Once they’re cool, sprinkle them with a few drops of your favorite essential oils like cinnamon or clove. Now they double as a natural air freshener, infusing your home with a rich, seasonal scent. The result? A multi-sensory experience that elevates your autumn-inspired home and amplifies its coziness.

04

Seasonal Centerpieces

Create a striking centerpiece using a combination of indoor and outdoor items. Fill a rustic tray or cornucopia with mini pumpkins, dried corn and colorful leaves. Complement this rustic tableau with treasures from inside your home such as vintage books, antique bottles or candle holders. Add a touch of whimsy with fairy lights or glass beads. You could even incorporate family heirlooms or photos to bring a touch of sentimentality to the display. Mixing elements in this way adds a fascinating dynamic to the centerpiece, making it more than just an aesthetic focal point—it becomes a captivating narrative of your home and the autumn season.

Harvest Mantel Display

Turn your mantel into a celebration of harvest. Combine indoor items like small gourds, candlesticks or framed fall-themed art with outdoor elements like branches, fall leaves or dried berries. Add a few antiqued lanterns or a cozy knit throw to lend warmth and character. Perhaps a treasured family photo in a wooden frame could add a nostalgic touch.

By fusing the indoors with the outdoors, you’ll create a charming display that reflects autumn’s vibrant palette and harvest bounty. It’s not just about decorating; it’s about creating a space that reflects the season’s comforting transition, inviting everyone to bask in its homely appeal.

05

DIY Autumn Wreaths

A homemade wreath is a perfect way to welcome fall. Use materials such as twigs, dried flowers and leaves from your backyard. For an extra personal touch, integrate indoor items like ribbons or heirloom brooches. Consider using fabric scraps or old clothing to make bows or other embellishments. This not only lends the wreath a unique flair but also imbues it with fond memories. A DIY wreath doesn’t just reflect your style, it tells your story. It’s more than just a delightful crafting project; it’s a meaningful and creative expression that brings the essence of fall right to your door, welcoming the season with open arms.

Having been born in Venezuela and living in Guatemala and later Uganda for much of his childhood, Dan Anderson learned two important lessons. “A key lesson was that we have much more in common with people from other cultures than we do differences,” Dan explained. “I also learned that, in most countries, if you walk outside with a football (soccer ball) at your feet, you are able to instantly make friends.”

Today, Dan is putting both these lessons in practice, serving his community as an assistant soccer coach at his alma mater, Sandpoint High School (SHS), and as a Services for Exceptional Children (SEC) teacher at Farmin Stidwell Elementary School, where Dan himself attended in fifth grade.

In 2001, despite knowing nothing about Sandpoint, Dan’s family moved all the way from East Africa to North Idaho, where his father took a job at Quest Aircraft Company. “Safe to say, we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived,” Dan laughed. “I love this town and now consider it home.”

Growing up playing soccer in South America and Africa, Dan’s skills were noticeable, and he immediately made an impact on the pitch. In high school, Dan became a standout player for SHS, playing on varsity all four years and helping lead the Bulldogs to three state championships.

“My high school career remains my fondest period of sports-related memories that I have,” Dan reflected. “I learned so much about how to work toward lofty goals, be disciplined, and how to be a good teammate and leader.”

in the spotlight

After graduating in 2010, Dan went on to play collegiate soccer at several universities and he later spent two years in the Philippines as a Peace Corps volunteer.

Dan moved back to Sandpoint in 2018, and he is now entering his sixth year working at Farmin Stidwell and his third as an SEC teacher. He explained that his role is like a case manager and service provider for students in need of Special Education services.

“A typical day involves running small groups (academics, social/emotional learning, behavior regulation tools, etc.), being in the students’ classrooms with them to help them access their learning, and a fair amount of paperwork,” Dan explained. “To call it a labor of love would be an understatement.”

Aside from teaching and coaching, Dan loves to be outdoors and participate in activities like hiking, backpacking, snowboarding (most recently backcountry split boarding), disc golf, and any form of competitive sport, and he values time spent with his family and close friends.

While his life’s journey has taken him across the globe, Dan can confidently say that Sandpoint is his home and the work he does now is meaningful, rewarding, and a lot of fun.

STUDENTS IN

Through his variety of experiences at Sandpoint High School (SHS), senior Kody Bocksch has already begun to chart his life’s plan, and once he graduates next spring, he will be ready for takeoff.

“The extracurricular activities I have chosen allow me to either add a challenge to my dayto-day life or to make progress toward my future career,” Kody explained. “I find that for so many people, they are unable to explore their future while still in high school, and I am quite fortunate to have [found] my own route of discovery.”

In his first three years at SHS, Kody has stayed busy through numerous sports and clubs. He plays outfield and pitches for the Bulldogs Baseball team, competes on the SHS Academic Decathlon team that took third place at the national meet last spring, participates in the Aerospace Center of Excellence Sandpoint (ACES) program and works at Däher Aircraft.

“In my time spent at SHS, I have made much progress in my understanding of how there are times for my best effort and how there are separate times for which my best effort simply may not be good enough,” Kody noted. “Particularly important in the demonstration of this duality are my efforts with ACES and my current employment at Däher Aircraft.”

Growing up, Kody developed a passion for aviation, and he still enjoys flying and building experimental aircraft, like the RV-12 LS he is currently working on and hopes to have flying before the end of the calendar year.

After high school, Kody plans to attend either the United States Air Force or Naval Academy, where he would like to pursue a career in military

aviation and engineering. Even beyond his college years, Kody already has an idea what he aspires to achieve.

“Following this time in college, I will serve in the U.S. Armed Services for eight years (at least 10 if I manage to compete in flight school) before searching for employment in either aerospace engineering or as a bush pilot,” Kody shared.

Kody loves all the opportunities that living in Sandpoint and attending SHS have provided him. He enjoys spending time outdoors, fly fishing, camping, and appreciating what he views as one of “the most beautiful environments in the Pacific Northwest.”

Whatever flight pattern Kody’s life leads him to, he will always be thankful for the training ground and home base that Sandpoint has been for him.

THE SPOTLIGHT

CayliJo Giard’s first trip to the Bonner County Fair was when she was an infant—just 3 days old.

Now a sophomore at Sandpoint High School (SHS), CayliJo is a proud member of Bonner County 4-H and participates in numerous activities, showing horses, dairy goats, swine and pet rabbits, as well as competing in Dutch Oven cooking.

“Participating in 4-H is exhilarating,” CayliJo described. “There is nothing like waiting for the judge to come up to you to talk about your animal; no way to explain how your fingers start tingling when you’re on deck to go into the ring.”

CayliJo has been showing animals from the time she started walking and later became an official member of 4-H at the age of 9.

Some of CayliJo’s past projects include pygmy goat, pack goat, sewing and leather craft, and she has gone to both state and national competitions for her horse project.

Moving up to high school was a big step for CayliJo last year, but she has been able to excel in the classroom with the help of her peers and teachers.

“Since being at SHS I have learned a lot about people, and I feel like I have learned a lot about myself, in how I interact and work,” CayliJo

said. “The people that have influenced me the most have been teachers.”

Three teachers who have been especially impactful for CayliJo are Jake Stark, Steven Wimer and Malia Meschko.

“All of them have either been there for me on a bad day, taking time out of their day to make sure I was alright, or taught me something that I never would have learned in a regular class,” CayliJo recalled. “All three of those teachers have shown belief in me and pushed me to be a great student.”

CayliJo noted that she appreciates classes that teach real-world technical skills like welding and 3D design.

Currently, CayliJo’s potential future plans include going to college to become either a large animal veterinarian or an electrician, although she is still undecided.

Aside from school and 4-H, CayliJo enjoys hobbies like snowboarding, hunting, fishing, camping, reading and baking. She also appreciates the beauty of Bonner County, the proximity to the mountains and the numerous 4-H opportunities she is afforded by living here.

Ultimately, competing at the county fair and showing animals is a big part of who CayliJo is, and she is thankful for the many memories she has made there over the years.

Running together for health, hope and happiness in Bonner County

36 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL september/october 2023

In the heartland of Bonner County, the annual Find Your Strength Fun Run, organized by the Bonner General Health Foundation, stands as a beacon of health and hope. The foundation, which was revived in 2007, is in its second year of this extravaganza, and it has quickly become an integral part of the community, igniting a spark of inspiration and camaraderie among its participants. The Find Your Strength Fun Run is more than just a race; it embodies the spirit of unity and resilience that thrives in the picturesque corner of the world that is Bonner County.

Patty Hutchens, vice president of the foundation Board, and Amelia Boyd, the passionate race director and Board member, shared their insights into the event’s evolution and the profound difference it makes in countless lives. Patty expressed the foundation’s mission with the Find Your Strength event: “Our goal is to promote fitness and exercise while raising awareness about the comprehensive services Bonner General Health provides,” adding that the foundation exists to secure funds for crucial equipment and services that may not be covered in the hospital’s operating budget, ensuring that every individual and their loved ones receive the care they truly deserve.

The foundation’s relentless pursuit of excellence has not gone unnoticed, as it has raised a staggering $1.5 million over the years, strategically invested in various projects that positively impact the community’s well-being. One notable project was the acquisition of a second 3D mammography machine at the imaging center, catalyzed by the success of the 2023 Heart Ball. This effort resulted in a remarkable

40 percent increase in the number of mammograms performed, enhancing health care accessibility for women in the community.

Beyond traditional health care, the foundation’s ambition and compassion led to the groundbreaking decision to purchase an Exoskeleton, a cutting-edge technology poised to revolutionize rehabilitation. Patty shared her excitement, “We first learned about the Exoskeleton a few years ago when the Physical Therapy Department presented us with the information.”

The Exoskeleton holds deep personal significance for the community, as local resident Chris Owens, paralyzed in a logging accident, inspired this endeavor. Through the Exoskeleton therapy, Chris experienced a life-changing transformation, regaining significant strength and mobility, a feat he had not accomplished in years. He received the treatment years after being paralyzed and it helped strengthen his core. The foundation’s vision extends far beyond the borders of Bonner County, aiming to make a broader impact on the region’s health care landscape. Patty passionately shared, “Once the therapists are trained in using the Exoskeleton, Bonner General Health will be reaching out to other care providers in Idaho, Western Montana and Eastern Washington.” The outreach initiative seeks to spread awareness about Bonner General’s pioneering Physical Therapy Department, fostering a ripple effect that extends the life-transforming benefits of Exoskeleton treatment to a broader population.

shines as one of the foundation’s many endeavors. More than just a fundraising event, it serves as a platform to promote health and wellness throughout the community. Amelia emphasized, “Our goal is to promote fitness and exercise,” highlighting the excitement surrounding the collaboration with Sandpoint Strength and Conditioning and Flourish Nutrition. Participants receive “Couch to 5k” training tips and nutritious recipes, empowering them to embrace a healthier lifestyle while contributing to a noble cause. The event’s significance reaches far beyond fundraising, offering hope to those seeking treatment that could potentially restore mobility and significantly enhance strength.

The eagerly anticipated Find Your Strength Fun Run, scheduled for September 23, promises a joyous 5k and superhero-themed 1k run, embracing the spirit of togetherness and community support. Meandering through the picturesque Sand Creek trail, the race offers a captivating backdrop to the noble cause it supports. The event culminates in a family fun after-party at Trinity at City Beach, inviting everyone to revel in the sense of community and camaraderie that lies at the heart of the event.

As participants lace up their running shoes and don superhero-themed attire, they become champions of change, advocates for better health care and beacons of hope for those in need. The collective heartbeat of the community echoes through the scenic expanse of Bonner County, resonating with a resolute message of unity and compassion. With every stride taken, the runners carry the dreams of those who have benefited from the foundation’s tireless efforts. In Amelia Boyd’s words, “Participants can expect to have a great time! The 1k is a ‘super hero’ theme again, and we encourage all participating to wear their favorite superhero costume. The best part is watching these little superheroes run through the finish line with giant smiles on their faces.” The fun-filled after-party will feature face painting, bouncy houses, magic acts and more for participants, families and friends alike.

The Find Your Strength Fun Run embodies the spirit of a community rallying together, paving the way for a brighter and healthier future for all. With their hearts united, the residents of Bonner County can embrace the spirit of camaraderie, compassion and courage as they run toward a horizon where hope thrives, health flourishes and strength prevails. This extraordinary event goes beyond the boundaries of any track or trail, leaving an indelible mark on the community’s collective spirit. As participants and supporters join hands, the Find Your Strength Fun Run becomes not just a celebration of life and progress but a testament to the power of unity and the potential for change.

MERGING NATURE AND COMMUNITY

Travers Park: A visionary gem for Sandpoint

In a picturesque nook of Sandpoint, Idaho, where nature’s emerald hues meet the community’s cheerful chatter, a park planning and development manager, the inimitable Maeve Nevins-Lavtar, embarked on a visionary journey. As the orchestrator of the expansion of Travers Park, Maeve breathed life into the City’s 2020 Parks and Recreation Master Plan, metamorphosing it into a wondrous wonderland. The planning process, like a sonnet in motion, unfolded like a ballet of diligence. With her professional team of landscape architects, led by the esteemed Mike Terrell Landscape Architecture (MTLA), Maeve conducted a symphony of site visits and deep-dive reviews. But the true crescendo was public outreach, where the community’s voice harmonized with Travers Park’s essence. From the fall of 2022 to January 2023, an online survey, an Open House public meeting and several City Council gatherings became the epilogue of consensus.

As the clock struck January 18, 2023, the curtain unveiled the refined Travers Park Concept Plan before the City Council. Applause filled the chamber as dreams took shape. Phase 1, the star-spangled showstopper, twinkled like a meteor shower with the “James E. Russell” Sports Center, a venue embracing four tennis and 16 pickleball courts, complemented by a multi-use room and a plaza that harmoniously hummed with laughter and joy. The all-wheeled skatepark expansion, a daring endeavor of daring ollies and gravity-defying tricks, skated alongside this enchanting gala. But the carnival did not end there. In a pas de deux of creativity and inclusivity, Travers Park welcomed a new Inclusive ADAaccessible playground/splash-pad, a sparkling oasis of delight, designed to embrace every child’s laughter and every splash of imagination. The renovated bicycle skills course swirled like a ballet dancer on wheels, enchanting riders young and old.

Nature herself danced in delight as Travers Park’s landscape underwent a metamorphosis. Drainage and landscaping improvements, like the gentle touch of a painter’s brush, nurtured the grounds, while other park amenities, from quaint signage to cozy benches and charming picnic tables, became lyrical notes in this park symphony. But the show must go on, and future phases awaited their turn in the spotlight. The resurfaced tennis courts, smooth as a poet’s sonnet, awaited their grand debut. The renovation of the existing parking lot, like a chorus waiting to sing in unison, looked forward to easing the flow of visitors. Meanwhile, the relocation of the existing maintenance building awaited its encore, and the new asphalt bicycle pump track, a ballet of adrenaline and excitement, rehearsed its performance.

Financing for this massive project required creative collaboration. Maeve’s symphonic prowess weaved private donations like golden threads through the budget, adorning the “James E. Russell” Sports

Center and Gateway/Plaza with philanthropic opulence. The skatepark expansion found its place in the Parks Capital Project Budget, while the Pend Oreille Pedalers joined forces for the $50,000 to $75,000 bike skills course renovation. But the pièce de résistance was the symphony of grants. A harmonious melody of funds, the inclusive playground and splash pad sought the Land Water Conservation Grant (LWCF) from the State of Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. Maeve conducted the pursuit with unyielding passion, and with the City’s Parks Capital Projects budget as a match, the grant became a beautiful duet.

Maeve’s vision crystallized into a transformative tale. A park no longer just a park but a living, breathing poem, echoing the desires of the community and orchestrating a symphony of joy for generations to come. Travers Park embraced a paradigm shift, and the heartwarming tale of its expansion will forever resonate like a timeless melody, touching the soul of all who enter its enchanted realm.

The team at The Retreat Salon & Day Spa brings passion and experience

Meri Gabell’s journey in the wellness and arts fields began many years ago, starting with a passion for graphic design and fine arts during her college days. “My deepest passions have always revolved around artistic expression in all its forms and a strong desire to assist others,” she reflects.

In a “serendipitous twist,” she stumbled upon the path of massage therapy, and she immediately knew it was the “perfect fit” for her career aspirations. “I sought a profession that would allow me to help people, keep me actively engaged and offer the flexibility needed for future family plans,” she reflects. “Massage therapy not only met these criteria but also ignited a profound love for supporting clients in maintaining their well-being and experiencing the transformative benefits of medical massage.”

Her journey continued to progress, as Meri enhanced her expertise by becoming certified in esthetics—a decision that proved invaluable, “as the world of skin care beautifully complements the art of massage therapy within the spa industry,” she believes. “Offering my clients a diverse range of services, ensuring they feel well and confident in their appearance, has brought immense gratification to my work.”

She and her team celebrated the one-year anniversary of the opening of The Retreat Salon & Day Spa in August, and Meri could not be prouder of the success the business has seen and the support the community has shown.

“The appreciation and gratitude I receive from clients for the work I do is heartwarming. It reinforces my passion for my profession and drives

me to do even better,” she notes. “The ability to make a positive impact on someone’s well-being though massage therapy is incredibly fulfilling, and knowing that I’ve played a part in making someone’s day brighter or boosting their self-esteem through my esthetic services is a feeling like no other.”

At The Retreat Salon & Day Spa, clients are treated to a thoughtful combination of ambiance, attention to detail, trained professionals, tailored services with a strong focus on their needs and preferences, holistic wellness and ongoing improvement. “My insatiable thirst for knowledge fuels my drive to continuously improve and excel in every aspect of our industry. Top treatments and techniques for a youthful glow

48

While a glowing complexion and youthful skin

are always in style, skin-care trends can evolve and change as often as the seasons. Thanks to the latest beauty treatments and technologies, it’s now easier than ever to maintain your skin’s healthy glow into the fall.

your BEST

SEASON this SKIN

49

Start with some of 2023’s most popular skin-care trends: MINIMALIST

ROUTINES

Fall has a way of inspiring change and reigniting routine in every aspect of life. If it’s time to reimagine your skin-care routine this season, we have good news: Minimalism is in. Today’s trending skincare routines require fewer products and less time (and often as a result, less spending).

With multi-use products and multi-faceted tools offering a handful of skin-friendly benefits at once, skin-care routines have become more streamlined. This comes at perfect timing for maintaining proper skin care during the busy back-to-school season.

Serums that pack a punch with vitamins, peptides, antioxidants and soothing acids are an easy way to stay at the top of your skin-care game with minimal product.

Advanced all-in-one tools like the TheraFace Pro and the Solawave Skincare Wand make it easy to perform several different therapies from home. The TheraFace Pro’s attachments include gentle pressurized therapy to release facial tension (battle puffiness, along with three different LED light rings to target fine lines, acne and wrinkles. The small, lightweight Solawave 4-in-1 Skincare Wand completes multiple functions, including gentle massage and therapeutic Red Light Therapy.

With carefully multifaceted products and tools, you can streamline your beauty routine right along with your fall schedule.

SKIN CYCLING

Another way to stretch your beauty budget is skin cycling, an approach that involves applying skin-care products intermittently, in a cycle of about four days at a time. Rather than using all of your products every day, you select a few to use during that four-day period. During that

time, other products will be put on a ‘rest cycle’ and unused, until their application cycle begins.

Skin cycling promotes the strategic application of products, preventing skin irritation or potentially damaging over-application, by avoiding the use of many active ingredients at once. This technique is often recommended for sensitive skin, or those keeping it simple with the minimalist trend. Just use a few products for a few days, then switch to the others in your arsenal, and repeat.

SKIN SCULPTING TECHNOLOGIES

At salons and med spas, the latest beauty technologies are making it easier than ever to sculpt skin across the face and body. Popular new technologies and tools can quickly tone and tighten targeted areas for noticeable results in less time, all without a need for surgery.

CoolSculpting technology treats the desired area by targeting and freezing skin cells in a light, painless procedure. The cooling procedure causes the fat cells to die off naturally, resulting in enhanced toning and shaping in the affected area. Results typically continue to develop in the weeks following treatment.

Often called a needle-free alternative to fillers and Botox, the Emface uses radiofrequency technology paired with high-intensity electromagnetic stimulation to boost the strengthening, firming proteins in the skin like collagen and elastin. The result: a more sculpted appearance after a minimally invasive treatment that works to build muscle and eliminate fat all at once. With no needles and no recovery time required, Emface is a top choice for keeping the skin lifted and tightened.

Also using electric frequency technology, Emsculpt body sculpting technology can tighten and tone areas of the body in just 30-minute sessions. Results are often noticed in the form of visible slimming and toning, especially around the abs and core.

DEFINED LIPS

Lips are always a top focal point of the face, but the trendiest ways to define them have looked different over the years. Today’s trends celebrate definition over volume, using lighter fillers and opting for popular treatments to enhance the natural shape of the lips. During a lip flip procedure, the provider will typically make several Botox injections to the upper part of the lips. This helps relax (“flip”) the

51

top lip, revealing more lip and less gum, resulting in the appearance of fuller lips without the use of added filler.

LASER SKIN THERAPY

Laser therapy can be highly targeted and used to address a wide array of skin concerns. from banishing dark spots and fine lines, to reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, acne scarring and more.

In-office laser therapies use ultra-focused lasers that can target the desired areas of the skin, removing the outer layer to reveal the healthier skin underneath. The laser’s sharp focus allows this to happen without damage to surrounding tissues. The resulting collagen stimulation and elastin production brings the added benefit of restoring volume to the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

LED LIGHT THERAPY

When it comes to anti-aging therapies, LED light therapy is almost as non-invasive as it gets. It involves using light at different wavelengths to produce targeted results for regeneration, firmness and texture. Often, a series of 20-minute treatments is recommended. Even better, the treatment

involves lying under a machine emitting LED light—a good time to relax and treat your skin all at once!

HEALTH-FOCUSED, HOLISTIC TREATMENTS

Skin health is often about glowing from the inside out. Providers are now more often implementing holistic strategies into their treatment offerings, incorporating aspects of nutrition, metabolism, rejuvenation, mental health, supplementation and more.

Boosting the results of your skin-care routine with proper supplementation can further amplify the results of your beauty regimen, all while supporting total-body wellness. Top skin-supporting supplements often include vitamins A, C and E, collagen, and sun-protective glutathione.

TREAT YOUR SKIN THIS FALL

Everyone deserves some pampering from time to time. Whether it’s from the comfort of your home, or during a visit to your aesthetician, dedicating some time to skin care (and self-care) can help you maintain glowing skin well past summertime. With a minimalist routine and a few key products and treatments, autumn skin care has never been easier!

Healing the Body Naturally

7B-IV Trinity Wellness Center focuses on the art of functional medicine

Melinda and Barrett Adams, owners of 7B-IV Trinity Wellness Center, invite the community to join them on July 29 for the Grand Opening of their beautiful new clinic in downtown Sandpoint. What began as a mobile IV service, then a small brick-and-mortar, has become more than the couple could have ever dreamed of. And the journey was inspired by their daughter, Trinity.

body is a beautiful, natural, organic creation from God, and it has a very strong natural ability to heal itself. This is why I do what I do now.”

7B-IV immediately saw success within those first few months, with Melinda’s clientele continuing to grow. In September 2022, she and Barrett opened their 500-square-foot full-time clinic in downtown Sandpoint. As their space expanded, Melinda’s passion for natural healing did as well. She realized that Sandpoint needed a full healing wellness center with medical-grade equipment to truly help patients with the science of functional medicine.

The Adams were blessed with the opportunity to purchase a clinic downtown, and after renovations, they officially moved into their new wellness center in June 2023. Today, 7BIV Trinity Wellness Center focuses on the art of functional medicine, not only offering IV services but full-spectrum healing redlight saunas, a Halotherapy salt chamber for respiratory care, medical-grade redlight therapy bed, bio-identical hormone therapy, as well as a full blood draw/lab service. “Our clinic is also giving access to medical doctors of naturopathic/functional medicine, breast cancer surgeon/specialist, mental health therapy specializing in trauma, medical massage therapy, as well as a legal nursing specialist,” Melinda shares. “We have lots of desires and dreams that we would like to add, all of which provide the Sandpoint area with the treatments that will truly help patients return back to optimum health using the functional medicine approach.”

If you’re ready to start your healing journey in a loving, transparent, respectful, welcoming environment, call Melinda today.

Childhood is a phase of life brimming with energy and enthusiasm. It’s an age characterized by exploration, play and physical activity. However, in this digital era, electronic devices can often overshadow traditional play, hindering children’s physical development. To combat this issue, a delightful and engaging approach is to promote exercise through play, which effectively intertwines the benefits of physical activity with the joy of childhood fun.

Exercise is vital for a child’s overall health, enhancing growth, strengthening muscles, refining motor skills and promoting mental well-being. It has also been linked to improved academic performance and self-esteem. The World Health Organization suggests that children aged 5 to 17 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorousintensity physical activity daily. Encouraging exercise through play can help achieve these recommendations while offering an enjoyable experience to your child.

Play-based exercises can be facilitated both indoors and outdoors, involving a variety of activities such as hide and seek, tag, hopscotch, or even structured sports. These games not only support physical fitness but also stimulate cognitive, emotional and social development.

Outdoor play presents numerous opportunities for enjoyable exercise. Encouraging your child to participate in classic games like tag or capture the flag provides them with a cardiovascular workout while promoting teamwork and strategic thinking. Nature walks and bike rides offer a change of scenery and can stimulate curiosity about the environment. Even gardening can be a source of physical activity and a lesson about nature and responsibility. Outdoor playgrounds are another excellent avenue, where climbing, swinging and sliding aid in muscle development and coordination.

Indoor play can be just as beneficial if the weather or other circumstances don’t allow for outside activities. Create a mini-obstacle course using household items, fostering an adventurous spirit and facilitating coordination and problem-solving skills. Games like “Simon Says” or “Musical Chairs” encourage movement while promoting listening skills and quick decision-making. Dance parties can also be a fun way to get your child moving, fostering creativity and rhythm.

While encouraging exercise through play, it’s important to focus on fun rather than competition. Making the activity enjoyable increases the likelihood that the child will continue to engage in physical activity as they grow older. Additionally, it’s crucial to lead by example; children

are more likely to follow an active lifestyle if they see their parents or guardians enjoying physical activities.

Involvement in the choice of activity is another crucial aspect. Offer your child a range of games or sports to choose from, catering to their interests and abilities. This autonomy can significantly increase their motivation to participate.

Combining play and exercise also paves the way for teaching vital life skills. Games involving teams can develop cooperation and communication skills, while solo games can enhance self-confidence and determination. Additionally, introducing the concepts of friendly competition, winning and losing can help children cope with similar situations in the future.

However, while incorporating exercise into play, remember to ensure safety. All activities should be age-appropriate and conducted in a secure environment. Use safety equipment when necessary, like helmets for bike riding or knee pads for rollerblading.

It’s also essential to maintain a balanced approach. Remember that rest and recovery are equally important in a child’s routine. Provide ample time for calm activities such as reading, drawing, or other creative pursuits.

An active childhood sets the foundation for a healthy and happy adulthood. Encouraging exercise through play, while ensuring safety and balance, can truly make fitness an enjoyable part of your child’s life. It is a practical and fun-filled strategy to ensure your child’s health and happiness, ensuring they are well-equipped to face the future.

As a parent or caregiver, it can seem like a daunting task to introduce and maintain an exercise routine for your child, particularly with the allure of screen time and other sedentary activities. However, by making it a playful and enjoyable experience, children are more likely to participate willingly and actively.

To effectively encourage exercise through play, it’s vital to be creative and innovative. Parents can transform mundane chores into fun games. For instance, tidying up can become a race to see who can pick up the most toys in a set time. Even a grocery shopping trip can be made into an activity involving walking and carrying items, while teaching about food groups and healthy choices.

Additionally, technology need not be the enemy of physical activity. There are numerous interactive video games that require physical movement, combining children’s interest in digital platforms with exercise. These games often incorporate dancing, sports and other active pursuits, seamlessly merging screen time with physical activity.

Consider involving your child in age-appropriate exercises that you do as well. Yoga, for example, can be introduced with simple poses, creating a shared experience that encourages mindfulness along with physical activity.

Lastly, it’s essential to praise and positively reinforce your child’s engagement in these play-based activities. Recognition of their efforts can go a long way in motivating them to continue. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small, to instill a sense of accomplishment and positivity toward exercise.

By adopting these strategies, parents can effectively integrate exercise into their child’s daily routine, fostering an enduring appreciation for physical activity. The key lies in making it enjoyable and participatory, effectively ensuring that exercise through play becomes a cherished part of their childhood and beyond.

Recognition of their efforts can go a long way in motivating them to continue.

Should you invest … or speculate? FINANCIAL FOCUS

You’ll find some big differences between traditional and speculative investments—and knowing these differences can matter a great deal when you’re trying to reach your financial goals.

To begin with, let’s look at the basic types of traditional and speculative investments. Traditional investments are those with which you’re probably already familiar: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and so on. Speculative investments include cryptocurrencies, foreign currencies, and precious metals such as gold, silver and copper.

Now, consider these three components of investing and how they differ between traditional and speculative investments:

The first issue to consider is risk. When you own stocks or stock-based mutual funds, the value of your investments will fluctuate. And bond prices will also move up and down, largely in response to changing interest rates. However, owning an array of stocks—smallcompany, large-company, international, etc.—can help reduce the impact of volatility on your stock portfolio. And owning a mix of short- and long-term bonds can help you defend yourself somewhat against interestrate movements. When interest rates fall, you’ll still have your longer-term bonds, which generally—but not always—pay higher rates than short-term ones. And when interest rates rise, you can redeem your maturing shortterm bonds at potentially higher rates.

With speculative investments, though, price movements can be extreme as well as rapid. During their short history, cryptocurrencies, in particular, have shown astonishingly fast moves up and down, resulting in huge gains followed by equally huge, or bigger, losses. The risk factor for crypto is exacerbated by it being largely unregulated, unlike with stocks

and bonds, whose transactions are overseen by well-established regulatory agencies. There just isn’t much that investors can do to modulate the risk presented by crypto and some other speculative investments.

A second key difference between traditional and speculative investments is the time horizon involved. When you invest in stocks and other traditional investments, you ideally should be in it for the long term—it’s not a “get rich quick” strategy. But those who purchase speculative investments want, and expect, quick and sizable returns, despite the considerable risk involved.

A third difference between the two types of investments is the activity required by investors. When you’re a long-term investor in traditional investments, you may not have to do all that much, once you’ve built a portfolio that’s appropriate for your risk tolerance, goals and time horizon. After that point, it’s mostly just a matter of monitoring your portfolio and making occasional moves—you’re not constantly buying and selling, or at least you shouldn’t be. But when you speculate in crypto or other instruments, you are constantly watching prices move—and then making your own moves in response. It’s an activity that requires considerable attention and effort.

One final thought: Not all speculative instruments are necessarily bad investments. Precious metals, for instance, are found in some traditional mutual funds, sometimes in the form of shares of mining companies. And even crypto may become more of a stable vehicle once additional regulation comes into play. But if you’re investing for long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement— rather than speculating for thrills and quick gains, which may disappear just as quickly— you may want to give careful thought to the types of investments you pursue.

Holistic Approaches to Wellness

It’s time to discover Hot Shots Thermography

“Ibegan living and treating my family holistically about 11 years ago. I woke up to the dangers of Big Pharma and did not want to participate anymore,” recalls licensed nurse Shelly Rose, owner of Hot Shots Thermography and certified thermographic technician.

Cancer is very prevalent in Shelly’s family; she lost her baby brother to brain cancer, grandfather to prostate cancer, most of her family has had skin cancer, and her father is currently battling prostate cancer. Her husband’s grandmother had breast cancer, later passing away from pancreatic cancer. And in 2018, Shelly found herself dealing with yet another breast lump.

“Having been diagnosed with fibrocystic breast disease at age 19, I had already been ordered to have five mammograms. At age 40, I decided I no longer wanted the radiation exposure or its cumulative effects, not to mention its risk for causing cancer. That is when I discovered thermography and had my first thermogram,” she remembers. “The thermogram was not abnormal but showed enough that I was urged to get follow-up testing. I went for an ultrasound that confirmed that all was fine. I was relieved to not have another dose of radiation. The thermogram also suggested an imbalance in hormones in my breasts. After confirming this with a further evaluation, I began bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.”

Inspired by her and her family’s health histories, Shelly, along with her husband, opened Hot Shots Thermography—a dream five years in the

making that they were finally able to manifest in the summer of 2023.

Hot Shots Thermography is a non-invasive, adjunctive imaging technology known as medical infrared imaging, which visualizes and records changes in the surface skin temperature. An infrared camera is used to produce the visual image, which graphically maps the body temperature and is referred to as a “thermogram.”

“Utilization of surface temperature analysis is appropriate and germane to the practice of health care whenever it is deemed necessary for examination of physiology,” Shelly states. “Just as it is well known that core temperature yields valuable information on the clinical status of a patient, surface temperature has been shown to produce invaluable information on the normal and abnormal functioning of the sensory and sympathetic nervous system, vascular system, musculoskeletal system and local inflammatory processes.”

Conditions where thermography can be beneficial include:

• Adjunctive risk assessment for the detection of breast cancer

• Vascular disease

• Rheumatology

• Neuromusculoskeletal disorders

• Thyroid disorders

• Inflammatory conditions

Mammography

Increased capacity, reduced wait times, and healthier patient outcomes

With our population on a continual incline, the need for more access to all health-related services is apparent. Mammography services were a clear need. With an overwhelming amount of support from our community through the 2023 Heart Ball, Bonner General Health (BGH) purchased and installed a second Selenia Dimensions 3D mammography unit. BGH went live, screening the first patients on the new unit on April 10, 2023.

“The increased capacity has had a profound impact on the availability and access to screening, diagnostic, and breast biopsy services,” according to Daniel Holland, director of Diagnostic Imaging at BGH. “This unit has allowed Bonner General Health to change its mammography program by increasing the availability of screening access by 80 percent, diagnostic access by 66 percent, and biopsy slots by 150 percent.”

The most significant impact that the increased access has had on care is making it possible to get a patient from screening through their diagnostic and a biopsy, if necessary, within one week. “Reducing the time between a screening mammogram and the diagnosis of breast cancer has a significant impact on the emotional well-being of our patients and their care outcomes,” Holland adds.

What is the significance?

“3D mammography is a critical technology because it has an increased sensitivity that can diagnose more cancers at an earlier stage than standard mammography,” says Dr. Hannah Robbins, a local general surgeon specializing in breast cancer surgeries. “Mammography can diagnose a cancer one-and-a-half to four years before you can feel it in the breast.”

What is the difference?

A screening mammogram involves two images of each breast and detects lumps or other abnormalities. They are used to find cancer before any symptoms occur, thus catching cancer early and with better outcomes, whereas a diagnostic mammogram is used to

further analyze a lump or abnormality in the breast after they have been detected.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women aged 45 to 54 start getting a screening mammogram every year. Talking with your provider about your family history and risk factors can help determine when to start mammogram screening.

What should I expect?

To get a mammogram, you must undress above the waist and change into a gown, open in the front.

You and the screening technologist will be the only ones in the room. Your breast will be compressed between two plates for 10 to 15 seconds while an X-ray is taken and again after changing positions for a side-to-side image. You may feel some discomfort when your breasts are compressed. However, it is relatively quick, and the technologist can try to adjust the compression to your comfort if needed.

Two views are typically taken of each breast during a screening mammogram. A diagnostic mammogram will include additional imaging focusing on the area in question. Finally, a radiologist and results read mammograms will be reported by your provider.

“Breast cancer is a disease we cannot necessarily prevent,” notes BGH Family Practice Provider Nichole Grimm, FNP. “Some of us have higher risk factors than others, so the importance of screening for breast cancer allows us to detect very early changes in breast tissue before they become cancerous and spread through the body.”

Honor your breasts and your health and schedule a preventative health mammogram.

SKIN RESURFACING

The newest technology is here

C02 lasers have been used in aesthetic medicine since the early ‘60s but fell out of popularity due to the long recovery time and potential complications from the intense treatment. Fortunately, there is a new technology that delivers the same benefits as traditional C02 skin resurfacing treatments— without the discomfort and downtime. The Tetra C02 CoolPeel laser targets just the superficial layer of skin to reveal younger and healthier tissue.

A CoolPeel laser treatment can only be done using the SmartXide Tetra CO2 laser. The Tetra is the latest, most advanced CO2 laser from DEKA, a global leader in aesthetic technology. Only Tetra can control its output to deliver high energy in extremely short pulses to deliver impressive superficial skin resurfacing results without the lingering heat that would traditionally damage the surrounding skin. The lack of unnecessary heat is why we call it cool—get it?—and how you get an immediate aesthetic effect with minimal downtime. Curious? Read on for frequently asked questions.

What areas can be treated?

The CoolPeel treatment can be performed on any area of the body. The most common include the face, neck, décolleté, arms and back of hands.

What does the Cool Peel treatment improve?

• Appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

• Sun damage and dark spots

• Pore size

• Skin texture

• Acne scars and surgical scars

How much does the CoolPeel cost?

Cost can vary depending on your region. In most areas the treatment is $800 per area (for example, the face). When purchasing a package of treatments there is generally some savings.

How many sessions are recommended?

Your practitioner will recommend the optimal number of sessions to be performed based on your personal goals, and treatment times and frequency will be specifically tailored to obtain the optimal results. Generally, a series of three treatments is recommended.

What kind of post-procedure care is required?

Clients will be given post-care instructions and skin care to use after treatment. The treated area should be kept hydrated. Intense exercise and sweating are discouraged for the first 48 hours. Additionally, avoid sun exposure post treatment until the area is completely healed, and use adequate sunscreen. Generally, patients have a sunburned appearance for several hours to a day post treatment, and the skin has a light sandpaper-like texture for three to seven days. This treatment is considered a “no social downtime” procedure.

Talk to your aesthetic provider to learn if the CoolPeel is right for you.

Just a short drive from Shelter Island is the Cabrillo National Monument, located on Point Loma. The drive climbs to the top of the hill and follows the peninsula through the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, which is starkly beautiful with the rows and rows of uniform white tombstones. Plan to spend a few hours at the monument to enjoy the museum and watch the film. Enjoy views of San Diego and Coronado before taking the short hike to the lighthouse. The monument is also famed for its tide pools along the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Even if it is not low tide, it is still worth a visit to hike along the rocky shoreline.

Insider Tip: Travel to the overflow parking lot (Lot 2) for another view. The monument is one of the premier bird watching spots in San Diego, and many birds congregate in the area below Lot 2.

Nutrient-Packed Granola Bars

Perfect snack for kids—and adults—on the go!

Ingredients

2 cups rolled oats

1 cup nuts

(almonds, walnuts or cashews), chopped

1/2 cup dried fruits

(raisins, cranberries or chopped dates)

1/4 cup honey or maple syrup

1/4 cup nut butter

(peanut butter or almond butter)

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup ground flaxseed

1/4 cup shredded coconut

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/2 tsp. cinnamon (optional)

A pinch of salt

Method

• Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking dish or pan with parchment paper and set aside.

• In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, chopped nuts, dried fruits, ground flaxseed, shredded coconut, cinnamon (if using) and salt. Mix well.

• In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the honey or maple syrup, nut butter, coconut oil and vanilla extract. Stir until everything is melted and well combined. Remove from heat.

Tip

These nutrient-packed granola bars are versatile, and you can customize them by adding other ingredients like chia seeds, dark chocolate chips, or even protein powder to boost their nutritional value. Enjoy!

• Pour the wet mixture over the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl. Use a spatula or your hands to mix everything together until all the dry ingredients are coated and evenly distributed.

• Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish or pan. Use your hands or the back of a spoon to press it down firmly and make sure it’s evenly spread.

• Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown.

• Remove from the oven and let it cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, refrigerate for about an hour to firm up.

• Once the granola mixture is firm, remove it from the pan and cut it into bars or squares of your desired size.

• Store the granola bars in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for longer shelf life.
