I am inviting you to come and share some water time with me! I will be offering two different classes in the evening. One is water dance with stationary Pilate’s exercise, and the other is a complete stretch class using Ai chi and Yoga forms.  Monday, Feb. 3, starts the Complete Stretch class. This will be an hour of very slow flowing movements that will ensure maximum range of motion. The movements are set in a pattern so with practice and time it may become a mind and body form. This class will run both Monday and Wednesday from 4:30 to 5:30. Tuesday, Feb. 4, starts the Water Dance/ Pilates class. This class will have stationary Pilates exercises modified for the water and NIA style dance moves to add endurance and cardio. This class will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30 to 6:30. 92  Warm Water; immerse for the freedom of mobility, stability and balance. Not only is exercising in water ideal for rehabilitation, it is the perfect environment to heal your physical and emotional body.  Warm water exercise is the path to erasing a day of stress and to relieving the aches and pains that accumulate throughout the day. Take an hour to unwind and stretch before you head into your evening. There are endless reasons why the warm water works for you. When you immerse into the water, almost all your physical limitations vanish. You can move without the fears or anxieties of falling or impact on your body.

It was in 1979 when visiting my mother Dianne in Florida, that I observed my first water aerobics class. My mother was losing muscle mass very fast due to her ALS. After relocating from Chicago to Florida, the outdoor apartment pool was an obvious tool for physical exercise and movement.  Not only did the doctor see immediate muscle growth in Dianne’s arms, she also felt the enlightened spirit in her attitude. The incredible effects of water on her body and spirit showed immediate impact in her overall health. Needless to say she was not healed but her life on earth was enhanced. While she was confined to a wheelchair on land, Dianne had full mobility in the water. She died in 1985. Soon after she died, I became certified as an Aquatic Aerobics Instructor and an Aquatic Personal Trainer through AEA (Aquatic Exercise Association). I broadened my knowledge in deep water, shallow water, Pilates, Ai Chi, orthopedic specialties, chronic illnesses, exercise for seniors, arthritis and any other program that could expand the demographic that I would be working with. Then I decided it was time to teach at the top aquatic facility in Baltimore, the Maryland Athletic Club. I was hired and my career took off. I was living my dream and loving my job! I am now teaching classes at Cornerstone Physical Therapy. I feel it is my mission to share the incredible wonders of the water! Thirteenyear-old Cole Russo counts basketball among one of his favorite sports. That could in part be attributed to the great experience he has had the last six years playing in Sandpoint’s Upward Basketball League.  “It’s a once in a lifetime experience to be able to play in this league,” said Cole, a seventh grader at Sandpoint Middle School. The Upward Basketball program is the world’s largest Christian sports league and was launched in Sandpoint seven years ago. The exponential growth it has experienced is a testament to the quality of the program. League Director Hillary Dunbar recalls that initially there were 40 elementary aged children, only two of who were girls. Hillary and Kim Brackett have been co-directing Upward for the last 4 years. “This year we have 250 kids registered across both basketball and cheerleading with 50 girls playing ball in grades 1st through 8th,” said Hillary. “The league has consistently grown by 30 to 40 kids each year.” The program recently expanded to include Middle School aged youth, something for which Cole was grateful. “I was very fortunate to have a seventh grade team,” said Cole who adds that he has a total of 7 players on his team some of whom have played with him for all the years he has been in Upward. Matt Mire is the referee coordinator for the league and also coaches his daughter’s team. He has been a part of the program for several years and says that, while it is great to teach the techniques of the game, he also enjoys the emphasis on playing together as a team. “It’s a true 50/50 partnership between teaching the X’s and O’s and sportsmanship,” he said. So what is it about the Upward Basketball program that makes it so unique? According to both Hillary and Matt, it would have to be the fact the organization is Christian based. “The

spiritual component is the foundation of the program,” said Hillary. “Every season three core virtues are emphasized.” This year they are teaching honesty, patience and kindness. It is the coach’s responsibility to take time each practice and sit down with the players to reinforce the virtue that is the focus of the week. They share stories, a Bible verse and words of encouragement.  “At half time of the games, we always have a goofy game for the fans to participate in that also ties in with our virtue,” said Hillary. Matt recalls a recent session with his team where he gave examples of what it meant to have patience. One young girl finally told him she knew what it meant too. She shared that she was showing great patience by listening to him because she really wanted to get back to playing basketball. “You never know what is going to come out of their mouths,” laughed Matt who adds that he thoroughly enjoys the interaction with the kids. “We really have an opportunity to do more than just coach. (Christianity) is the core of the program and that’s not lost by teaching the game.” The Upward program also distinguishes itself from other programs through the unique substitution system they employ. “It pairs players on man to man defense and ensures that every child on the team receives equal playing time,” said Hillary. After the game the players are awarded stars of various colors that represent his or her performance on the court. Cole said he too likes the fact that the players rotate and each player typically gets at least three quarters of play each game. “It gives each child an opportunity to shine,” adds Matt. Hillary said that one aspect the kids really enjoy is the way each player is introduced into the gym on game day through the “tunnel” to stadium music and loud cheering. “It’s always a kid favorite,”

In addition to the basketball program, Upward also has a cheerleading program. “Our cheerleading program continues to bring energy and excitement to game days with cheers and dance routines,” said Hillary who adds that currently the entire program requires approximately 70 volunteers coaches, referees, announcers, time clock attendants, café workers, and game day greeters.

Although Christian based, everyone agrees that once they hit the court the game is every bit as competitive as in other leagues.  “It’s really competitive, but all the kids are really friendly and all the teams seem to get along really well,” observed Cole.

Part of the role the referees have is to take the time to also teach the players, especially at the younger ages. “The refs are all really really nice and fair,” said Cole.

r. Michael Durnin is passionate about his work. A dentist with over 30 years of experience, Durnin has not only treated countless patients in North Idaho, but he has dedicated much of his life to providing dental care to the less fortunate. • 30 thawed from frozen pitted dark cherries (or stemless maraschino cherries for kids) • ¼ cup brandy • 1 12-ounce package dark chocolate chips (divided) • 6 tsp. vegetable oil • 1 tub Litehouse Food’s Vanilla Yogurt Fruit Dip • Special equipment: chocolate cup molds

Directions: 1. Add cherries to small bowl and drizzle with brandy. Let soak while preparing the chocolate as described in next step. 2. To melt chocolate, work with three ounces at a time to maintain quality. The warmth and friendliness of owners Rod and Nan Miller and their staff, together with the delicious smells that emanate from the store upon arriving and the delicious taste of the homemade food are all what keep customers coming back for more.

In the near future they are looking to include hot sandwiches and possibly homemade ice cream in the store. “We still offer gift baskets, deli, veggie, fruit and pastry trays for parties or gatherings and will deliver lunches if there is an order of 10 or more sandwiches,” said Rod.

Driven by customer demand and a desire to provide their patrons with a place to sit and enjoy their lunch, Rod and Nan Miller expanded the store in September of 2013. “We had outgrown our old store, and customers were asking for a place to sit and eat lunch,” said Rod. In addition to homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, scones, stollen and pies, they also offer local honey, raw milk, soup, and a deli where they make sandwiches on their freshly baked bread. With their recent expansion, Miller’s Country Store has added more take and bake meals, all of which are made from scratch in their bakery. In fact many of the recipes are ones that Nan used to watch her great grandmother create when she was a little girl. They also added bulk food such as soup, rice, and side dish meal mixes and more gluten free items. “Our homemade soups are made from scratch and have all natural ingredients,” said Rod. “We

Rod and Nan agree that while many here were drawn to Sandpoint because of its beauty, they chose to make Sandpoint their home because of the friendliness of the people. And they have not regretted it. The Millers do their part to help support others less fortunate in the community. They donate beautiful gift baskets to events such as the Kinderhaven Festival of Trees fundraiser, which helps abused and neglected children in North Idaho. Before her days were filled with working at the store, Nan sewed comforters and donated then to a local Sandpoint women’s shelter. First Women Completing Union Gospel Mission Program Phasing Up By Colin Anderson

he Union Gospel Mission in Coeur d’Alene first opened its doors in September of 2012. Nearly a year and a half later its first guests are ready to leave the program and enter the world again as changed women. This is not a mild counseling session or a mandatory drug rehab meeting, but a full on life changing experience. On this January day, the room is filled with more than two hundred men, women, children, friends, family, church members and other supporters. Each group of women is moving to a new phase in their journey, and for some that phase means going back out into the community stronger and ready to contribute.

It is opened with a prayer followed by singer Sara Bareilles’ hit music video ‘Brave’ in which cameras are set up to record people dancing awkwardly in public. It’s a symbol the women in the program work so hard for; letting go of fear, regaining confidence and learning to love themselves. “When I first came in, I didn’t feel I needed to work on anything, more just tweak a few things in my life,” recalled Alicia who is now in phase 3. “Now I recognize there is a lot I want to work on, and I feel safe sharing my story here and with my sisters.” The community at the Union Gospel

Every few months UGM holds a ‘phase up celebration’ in which the community is invited to celebrate the accomplishments of the women involved in the program. When these women first come to the mission, they are placed in the rescue house. Many come from homelessness, addiction, and domestic violence situations. It is here where they choose to accept the program that in the coming months will completely change their lives. “When I first came in, ‘broken’ was an understatement and my smile was all for show,” says Christina who is now in phase 4, the final phase before moving out of the facility. “Through the program I found my sense of humor again, regained my confidence and I have a voice now.” The theme of this day’s celebration is ‘bravery.’

Women’s Center is diverse. There are more than thirty women living in the dormitory and almost as many children. The state of the art housing area has a backyard park and garden, reading areas, gym, thrift store, dining hall, computer room, and other places for the women to mingle. While they are not charged rent, each is required to do chores and tasks around the building and they hold each other accountable. Each phase stays together as a group throughout the process, attending group counseling sessions and living around each other. During the early phases women begin to

near the stage, and six months later here she is sharing her story in a magazine. “Change terrified me, everything in my life changed so I tail spinned out of control,” said Christian. “Now I want change. I’m going forward now. I look in the mirror, and I don’t even recognize myself. That change helped Christian get back the thing she treasures most - her children. “I couldn’t handle motherhood in phase 1 or 2, and it came down to maturity,” admitted Christian. “My kids spent time with a wonderful foster family, I became mature enough to be a mother and all of us are better for it.” For Alicia the story is similar. She has four children ranging in age from two to twelve and never thought she’d be a part of their lives again. Because of her progress, she was able to see all of them before Christmas and could soon be granted unsupervised visits will all of them.

As they move further into their journey, they move deeper into themselves, openly recognizing past wounds, seeking to make things right, developing an accountability team, and learning to take healthy risks and how to resolve conflict. As a silent observer seated in the back, it’s easy to see the confidence in each women grow as they continue to phase up. During her time, Christian mentioned that six months ago she didn’t want to be anywhere

For six women, today marks the end of their phase journey with Union Gospel Mission. Each completed a two-hundred and forty hour business practicum and each will soon enter the community and the workforce again. To take their place are ten new women ready to leave the rescue home and enter the program that will give them a new outlook on life and relationship with God. “We may all come from different backgrounds but Jesus is what we need and that’s what we all have in common,” said Alicia.

Selkirk Pedersen Sandpoint High School Student Documents His Family’s Worldwide Mission Work By Patty Hutchens

or sophomore Selkirk Pedersen, his classroom extends far beyond the walls of Sandpoint High School. For the last two years the 16-year-old high school student has been homeschooled for the fall semester and has seized the opportunity to serve others while studying his online courses.

Selkirk has been on at least four mission trips since the age of 7, the latest of which came in November. “I first went to Mexico,” said Selkirk of his trip nine years ago when he went with his immediate and extended family, many of who are veterinarians, to work at a spay-neuter clinic. It was the first of many eye-opening experiences for him.

Selkirk’s maternal grandparents are from India so when he was 9 years old his family traveled there. But it wasn’t just a pleasure trip; they spent much of their time volunteering in orphanages. His third trip came in 2008 when the Pedersen family traveled to Swaziland and Zimbabwe at the invitation of the Sagle based Luke Commission, a group that has operated in Swaziland since 2005 providing free health care to the isolated and underserved populations. “They invited us to experience it,” said Selkirk who adds that he recalls being amazed at how hard everyone worked to help make a difference. “Fifty percent of the people there have AIDS.” While there, the team provided eye exams, distributed medication, performed surgery, and did blood tests for both HIV and tuberculosis.

Selkirk’s interest in cinematography was the perfect way to convey to others the important work that is being done to help make a difference in the world. His hope is that the story he shares will encourage others to get involved. “There is so much. It is hard to explain and difficult to put on paper,” he said of his preference for sharing a story through film. When he left in November, the first stop was Liberia. Selkirk and Heather traveled with the

“People would come from all over to be seen,” said Selkirk who said there would be anywhere from 10 to 1000 patients at any given time. “We were there (at the clinic) sometimes until three in the morning, until every last patient was treated.” Years later, he recalls with disbelief how one woman was unable to walk to the clinic; instead her two sons, desperate to get their mother medical care, carried her on a blanket While his entire family, including dad Bruce and siblings Kipling and Rio, went on the previous trips, the trip he just completed was just he and his mother, Heather, along with a few other volunteers from the US. “We are giving them a more global outreach to use the gifts they’ve been given,” said Heather of her and Bruce’s desire to expose their children to other parts of the world. The primary purpose for the most recent trip was for Selkirk to shoot a promotional video for International Children’s Network, a group with which his family is heavily involved. ICN teams up with partners in foreign countries to obtain U.S-based financial support. The money is

While he was expecting to stay in a cheap hostile, Selkirk said he was surprised when they came upon the orphanage where they would be staying. There were only two mattresses for all five of them. “I slept on the floor with a blanket I got from the plane,” he said. When they awoke from what little sleep they had, Heather and Selkirk recall they were covered with bites, either from mosquitos or bedbugs. Sleep was restless, but not just because of the conditions. It was also due to the fact that they were fearful of being robbed. After all, they did not know who was watching them unload the boxes. “The night before the neighbors had been robbed at gun point,” said Selkirk. The orphanage, which was new and did not have children moved into it just yet, had barred doors and windows to help prevent people from breaking in. While in Liberia, they helped enroll the orphans in school and had children lined up with the hope of gaining a sponsor. “When people saw us, they saw opportunity,” said Selkirk. They spent time taking photos of the kids, gathering their information and putting together packets in hope of getting each child a sponsor when the volunteers returned to the U.S.

There were issues with Heather’s travel visa so she was re-routed to Germany and met up with the others three days later. Although far from glamorous, India was a welcome sight for the weary travelers. “It was the first hot shower I had taken in two weeks,” said Selkirk who explained that in Liberia a shower meant a bucket of cold water and a cup to pour over you. “It does not get all the grease

Selkirk reports that it was a success, and that they are looking forward to having children from India join the tour. From India the five traveled to Nepal. “It was cheap to travel there and we figured why no throw an extra country in the bunch,” said Selkirk.

“One of my goals is to know all the types of medicines,” he said.

In Nepal there were five of them to one bedroom, and the nights were extremely cold. But that did not seem to bother Selkirk. “They did not have much to offer us (as far as accommodations), but they were so kind,” he said gratefully. There they also had to make do with a bucket of water and a cup to shower. “But it was so cold that we didn’t even want to do that,” he said.

It was in Nepal where Selkirk was not sure if his life would be changed forever. His mother fell extremely ill. Unsure of what was wrong with her, Selkirk said Heather was in extreme pain and passed out while he was holding her on his lap.

“She told me that if she died, she wanted me to complete the mission trip,” said Selkirk of the horrifying moment. In the end, it was three kidney stones that were causing Heather excruciating pain. “I did not think I was going to come home from this one,” said Heather describing conditions beyond belief in the place where she was treated. “I don’t think you’ve lived until you’ve traveled in an ambulance in Nepal.”

Recovering in India, Heather stayed behind as Selkirk and the others traveled onto the Philippines. In the wake of an earthquake and typhoon, they were not sure of what to expect. “It turned out to not be as bad as CNN had portrayed,” said Selkirk. The orphanage they visited there was on an island and accessible only by a small fishing boat. Selkirk delighted in playing with the kids, climbing trees and playing simple games. So what have all these adventures taught Selkirk? “It’s made me realize how lucky I am and how grateful I am to live where I do,” said Selkirk who believes people here in the U.S. should not take things for granted because there are many people in the world who wonder where their next meal is coming from. Selkirk’s love of helping others has influenced his desire to study medicine when he is older.

Grateful to be back home, Selkirk said that while it was a challenge, he would not change anything - except for his mom’s illness. Reflecting on the experience he said if an opportunity comes his way again and he feels he has something to offer, he would definitely go. “I feel exposed to the world and experienced,” said Selkirk. “If I were forced to be on my own, I know I could fly out of the nest.” The Pedersen family owns and operates Talus Rock Retreat in Sandpoint and uses the profits they earn there to help fund their mission trips and serve the less fortunate worldwide.

It is Jaquete whom Preston credits with motivating him to attend Southern Utah University where he studied athletic training and coaching.  But like many, Preston found it difficult to find a job in his field. After graduation, he worked with a high school team receiving a small stipend for his time and also worked nights at a grocery store. He had prepared himself for the possibility of a long and challenging job search, but in a whirlwind of events, he soon found himself packing up and moving to Sandpoint.  In September he began working as the athletic trainer at Sandpoint High School and as a clinician at PneuThera in Sandpoint. He balances his time between both jobs and travels to as many of the high school games as possible. He is also pursuing his master’s degree in Sports Conditioning and Sports Performance. His days are often long. “During football season I worked 75 to 80 hours some weeks,” he said. But he would not trade it for anything. “I love to be with the kids, and I like to be able to travel with them to the games. It’s important.” For Preston, being away from work also provides little down time. He and Jaquete have three children. Their oldest, Isaac, is a sophomore at the high school, and they are his legal guardians. They took Isaac into their home when he was 12 years old. “I had worked at a home for troubled boys when I was getting my bachelor’s degree, and Jaquete had always wanted to help

Grateful for all of life’s blessings, Preston said he would not be able to do any of what he does if it weren’t for the support of his wife. “I appreciate everything she does to encourage me,” he said. And the same can be said by many of the students about Preston. “I have a good rapport with the kids. I am always here for them to talk to, and I support them not only in athletics but emotionally too.”

s a parent of two young children, I read nightly to my daughters. One evening I came across a quote that resonated with me then and has stuck with me since; "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it's not." The doctor who wrote these words was Dr. Seuss. Think about that for a moment, is it true or not true? Apply it to your everyday life, and you will find more times than not it is. How many decisions do we make in a day? How many of these decisions impact your health?

Virtually every decision you make pushes you closer to health or sickness. You are the one responsible, and the one who has to care a whole awful lot. I will show you how health is not all or nothing and how being the one responsible is empowering. Ask a ten year old if an apple or donut is better for them. They know the apple is the right choice. Ask them if exercise is better than no exercise or water better than soda. How come we don't regularly make the healthier choice? It's not because we don't

understand which is better; it's that it's not entirely clear the devastation that these poor choices have on us. How big of a difference does one apple or donut truly have? Not much in a day, but how about over a year or a lifetime? Small decisions and choices add up to make big differences. Think about your last checkup, physical, or yearly exam. What was measured? Weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, along with a host of other things. in time or an ongoing movie of the direction your health is heading? It is irrelevant what type of practitioner measured the values, M.D., D.O., D.C., N.P., you get the point. Let’s say I have normal values but eat fast food twice a day, don’t exercise and have a terrible social structure. Do you think I’m headed towards sickness or health? Quite obviously I will eventually become sick, but at what point do my “measurable values” indicate this? Waiting until a symptom arises or value is elevated is like building a boat after the flood. If normal measured values indicate we are healthy at that exact point, great! ou’ve been on the computer all day. At home you may be playing that new video game “the kids” got for Christmas, catching up with work from the office or starting tax preparation. That pain between your shoulder blades, bleary eyes, neck, back and hand pain or strain is not just part of the computer “game.” Pain, stiffness and reduced blood flow affect your ability to concentrate and be your most productive self at home or work. In the long run, you can cause damage to your body that may present as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis and headaches.  All this from a computer? Well, bodies were made for moving. When we were hunters and gatherers, we used all the muscles in our bodies, not just upper body and hands. Continued poor posture or holding your body in one position and using the same muscles for long periods of time, reduces the blood flow and places stress on the body. We now do more

upper body work, are more sedentary, live longer and put more repetitive stress on our bodies than ever before.  What can we do? First of all, MOVE!! Don’t sit more than a half hour in one position. Don’t wait until you hurt. If you have long periods of computer work to do, break it up with other tasks. Stretching can help, but it needs to be done throughout the day.  How is your computer position? You may have heard the word “ergonomic” which is simply fitting the workstation to the worker. Keeping the body in a neutral, relaxed position is important. Using the right equipment such as a supportive chair, wrist rest and document holder can be a big factor. If these things do not improve the problem, don’t wait until you are in a crisis – seek help! A trained therapist can help you reduce pain, release tightness, strengthen and set up your work station so that you can be “computer healthy.”

ife sometimes seems to change in the blink of an eye. Recently, a family called our company seeking information about getting a caregiver for their elderly mother who had just fallen again and was no longer able to take care of herself or maintain her house. She was insistent that she live in her own house rather than go to a nursing home. However, according to the daughter, the mother had no resources to pay privately for in-home services and had never considered getting long-term care insurance.  Because the daughter and her two brothers were raising their own children, they were unable to contribute anything toward the cost of their mother’s care at home. Fortunately for this family, the mother qualified for Idaho’s Medicaid program because she had very few financial assets and was over the age of 65. We assisted her in getting in contact with the local Medicaid office and the approval process took somewhat less time than was typical for many Medicaid applicants. She chose our agency to provide her “personal care services,” which allowed our caregivers to assist her with bathing, getting dressed each day, cooking her meals, doing her laundry and cleaning her home.  Not all families are so fortunate.  Many individuals have too many financial resources to qualify for the Idaho Medicaid program.  And contrary to popular assumptions, Medicare does not pay for the type of in-home care that allows the frail elderly or the disabled to stay in their

own homes. Medicare, as a federally funded program, is most often limited to those discharged from the hospital with doctor’s orders for “home health” services. Unlike home care services, home health does not include chore work (that is, house cleaning, laundry, shopping for groceries, cooking meals, assistance with eating, etc.,) and home health services are time-limited. In contrast, individuals that qualify for Medicaid can receive these home care services as long as necessary.  Few individuals or families give much thought to what they will do when they or their loved ones become too frail to take care of themselves or their homes. It’s not until they’ve reached the point where the seniors fall and injure themselves, become ill or begin to let themselves or their homes go that many people finally react and begin looking at options for care. In each case, seniors and their family members should start planning now for the time when they or their loved ones are no longer able to accomplish the activities of daily living and need additional help to stay at home safely. Gig Harbor was recently named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of the Top Five Small Towns for culture, heritage, and charm, and it is easy to see why. This beautiful burg is surrounded by water, nestled among the picturesque bays of Puget Sound, about an hour south of Seattle. The primary access is via Tacoma Narrows Bridge – a crossing made famous by engineering catastrophe Galloping Gertie. This sweet town serves up cultural events and activities year round, so no matter when you time your visit, you’ll have plenty of entertaining choices. A few miles west of town, Kopachuck State Park provides camping, waterside picnic facilities, a beach, and recreational access. Kopachuck is a nice spot to bring your kayak and paddle around Henderson Bay, and capture views of the Olympics. A quick drive across the Tacoma Narrows will bring you to Tacoma’s museum district, with the internationally recognized Museum of Glass (don’t miss the Hot Shop!), Tacoma Art Museum, and Washington State History Museum; other fun Tacoma sites include Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium with the surrounding park, which also offers kayak rentals; and the Foss Waterway Seaport project. LeMay–America’s Car Museum (ACM), one of the most unique museums on the west coast, “is designed to preserve history and celebrate the world’s automotive culture.” With one of the largest automobile collections in the world, ACM will enthrall car buffs and can even captivate those who may think automobiles are not all that exciting! ACM is a short drive (approximately 15 minutes) from Gig Harbor, located near the Tacoma Dome. If time allows you to stretch further afield, Gig Harbor makes a lovely home base for trips to the Olympic National Rain Forest and Seattle with its many tourist attractions.

questions. This is beneficial and helps the doctor too. But what about those annual or semi-annual examinations – especially if your pet is young and well - is this really necessary? Everyone knows the “7-year” rule; that a year in the life of your pet equals about 7 years in a human’s life. This means that a 3-year old dog is much like a 21 year-old young adult.

Paw Prints Everything happens much more quickly; illnesses develop sooner, teeth and gum disease explodes in record time, and sadly, a twelfth birthday party resembles greatgrandma’s 84th. The point is that a 6-month wellness exam is much like taking your child to the doctor every 3 years. When vaccinating pets became possible and many horribly dangerous diseases galloped across our pet population, veterinarians used the need for “annual” vaccines as a reason to roust pet owners into hospitals. Though the vaccinations have tremendous value, especially in the first 3 years, they were really not the main concern. The true value has always been the examination; listening to the heart and lungs, visualizing the eyes, ears, and teeth; palpating the lymph nodes and abdomen, and answering the questions or concerns of the pet owner. Sending blood to the lab for review culminates a truly complete physical examination – the external and the internal. Many hospitals are desperately trying to reduce the number of vaccinations we give our pets. Does a dog really need 13 distemper vaccinations by the time he turns 10 (assuming that 3 are done in the first year and then annually thereafter)? Will an indoor cat benefit from 13 Feline Leukemia vaccinations when she lives a completely indoor life? The obvious answer is no – this is too much. However, doctors fear that pets will not come in for examinations if owners are not following routine annual vaccination schedules. Educating everyone is difficult.

Our advice is to choose a hospital that is amenable to customizing your pet’s care based on your lifestyle, your pet’s lifestyle, their age, and risk factors. In this way your pet is protected and the number of vaccinations is greatly reduced. An even better method, though costly, is to draw blood and accurately determine what level of protection (from previous vaccinations) exists. One may find, in a particular animal, that 5 or more years can transpire between specific vaccinations. This is all wonderful as long as one fact remains consistent – yearly or semi-annual examinations. The state of Idaho has recently informed veterinarians that it is unlawful to vaccinate any animal without first performing an examination. I am not a fan of government legislating our actions by any means, however, their intention is well meant. I would much rather have informed pet owners who understand this issue rather than arguing with an owner who only wants “the shot”. Today, many pet owners view their pets as family members rather than simply an animal. As Dr. Marty Becker of North Idaho Animal Hospital in Sandpoint likes to say, “Pets have moved from the farmyard, into the house, and now are sleeping in our beds.” Some of you may want to buy vaccines over-the-counter and vaccinate your barn cats by yourself, foregoing examinations altogether – this is understandable. But for the majority of pet owners, it is important to realize the value of thorough examinations, dental care, and blood work thereby increasing the chances of a healthy and happy geriatric birthday party for your 86 year-old pet.

Newby-Ginnings Fallen Soldier's Generous Personality Lives On By Colin Anderson

rom tragedy often comes new hope. For Theresa Hart, tragedy struck on July 7th, 2011. It’s the day her son Nick Newby was killed by an I.E.D. while serving in Iraq. He was just 20 years old. Hart recalls her son as someone who never gave up on his friends, loved his family dearly, and would give you the shirt off his back at a moment’s notice.

clothing, appliances, electronics, and furniture. “We had a veteran in the other day that simply needed a new pair of pants,” said Hart. “We were also able to save a military family $140 a month by giving them a stackable washer and dryer that fit in their apartment.” One of the largest donations so far was a fully adjustable hospital bed. Newby-Ginnings was able to track down a gold star family in need of one that very afternoon.

“I watched the guys from Nick’s unit come back from combat,” Hart recalls. “To see these young guys with injuries and psychological issues, I know Nick would have done everything he could to help.” It’s that belief and love for her son that inspired Theresa to create Newby-Ginnings, a program that helps active military, veterans, and gold star families with whatever they can. In just four months Newby-Ginnings has helped dozens of families and individuals with everything from a couple gallons of gas to a stackable washer and dryer. By word of mouth and social media the organization has been flooded with donations, and their location on Biztown Loop in Hayden is already filled to the brim with housewares,

“If anyone deserves to be comfortable, it’s our veterans and those who serve our country,” said Hart.

Newby-Ginnings isn’t just a place to stop by and pick something up, it’s also an area where military and family members can go to share their story and listen to others. be that hub and facilitator for a veteran’s support community. In the meantime, they’re still collecting donations and trying to reach as many folks as they can. Newby-Ginnings accepts appliances, furniture, clothing, electronics, and other household goods. All should be in good condition. There is no paid staff so monetary donations go towards facility rental and helping vets. The organization doesn’t hand out cash but instead gives out gift cards for gas, items, and can help with utility bills and monthly rent. As the organization grows, it gives Theresa a chance to talk about her son Nick each and every day. She often spends twelve to fourteen hours each day volunteering her

time but says never does it feel like work. “I’m the happiest I’ve been since losing Nick,” said Theresa. “I’m glad to be doing something I know he would have done too.” If you are active military, veteran, or gold star family member in need of help, or have questions on donation you can find more information on Facebook. FEBRUARY 24 Hours For Hank

One of Sandpoint’s most endearing and popular events, the annual Eichardt’s K9 Keg Pull is moving this year to the Granary location to combine with Evans Brothers Coffee’s Family Fun Day and The Eureka Institute’s Dodge Ball tournament, making for one big event not to be missed. The Keg Pull starts at 10am, with dogs of all sizes racing down a snowpacked course pulling anywhere from full-size kegs to beer cans, amidst a pandemonium of cheering from the crowd. $5 entry fee goes to the Panhandle Animal Shelter. A free Neighborhood Coffee Tasting will take place at the Evans Brothers’ Roasting Studio throughout the event, with hot chocolate for the kids.

Join Schweitzer for Winterfest, an outdoor brew festival! Beers will be on tap at the Schweitzer tent located in the village.
