REAL Market Update - Brought to you by Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker What is the current real estate market climate in North Idaho? Right now, the market is still in favor of Sellers and prices continue to rise. Good news for Buyers - the new year has brought more properties for sale and mortgage interest rates are historically low. Is now a good time to buy or sell? I always say when the time is right for you, the time is right. Buyers be ready. Approach your home search with proof of your purchasing ability and understand you may need to adjust your expectations. Sellers, you presently have the advantage of less competition. Price your home or land accordingly and know your next step. Rely on professionals who are focused on your area for advice. One thing is certain - our market is constantly changing. What is important to me remains the same. God, Family and Relationships.
Contact Jackie Suarez, your local expert for help with your real estate needs. What Jackie’s clients are saying “She’s a very warm friendly realtor who listens and always follows through on resolving issues or answering our specific quessons. I have recommended her to friends and they too have been very pleased with her advice and work ethic.” Cat B., Sandpoint “We have been working with Jackie for a few years and are extremely happy with her determinaaon in finding our perfect home. We will always recommend Jackie to our friends and family.” Tracy & Saundra "Jackie outshined other potennal brokers with her in depth proposals and market research. AAennon to detail and knowledge of the area was key. Literally no complaints. She was helpful in other areas as well--referrals to professionals in other sectors (banking, mortgages, accounnng, etc.). We were told that she would treat us like her only client...and it truly felt that way. Exceeded all expectaaons despite the fact that the referral to her set the bar very high. We can't imagine selling this house with anyone other than Jackie. We are very appreciaave to have been introduced to her and recommend her to anyone in the area.” Chris H. and Family, Sandpoint, ID “ Thank you so much for helping me through this process, you were awesome to work with. Look forward to going through this process again some day.” Kurt C., Priest River ID

LOG HOME RESTORATION
Is Your Log Home In Need Of A Makeover?
LOVE STARTS WITH YOU
C
ongratulations! We all made it through the first month of the new year. As February has arrived, with it comes the holiday we all equate to romance, roses and … love—Valentine’s Day. But this year, as we continue to embark on new journeys, take this month as an opportunity to focus on not only the love you show others, but yourself.
BEFORE
Self-love is too often overlooked. But if we don’t nurture our own bodies, minds and spirits, exemplifying love for ourselves, how can we possibly extend love to those around us?
• Log Rot • Cracked Chinking • Faded & Peeling Stain
In this issue, we have put together content that focuses on self-care and how important it is that we dedicate time for ourselves. The happier we are with ourselves and our own lives, the easier it is to extend that joy beyond ourselves and share it with those we care for.
We Repair:
There are many things surrounding us on a daily basis that are out of our control, yet we have complete control over how we treat ourselves. This month, it’s up to you to choose how you celebrate life and love. Whether you treat yourself to solo dinner or a spa day, spend Valentine’s weekend with your significant other or family, or opt to surround yourself with your dearest friends, love will always be in the air wherever you go—as long as you’re dedicating time and attention to loving yourself first. May love fill your life not just on Valentine’s Day but every day.
Steve Russo Executive Director | steve@like-media.com

As you share the love with those around you, be sure to treat yourself to all that's good in life, like a glass—or bottle—of wine from one of the many area tasting rooms that can be found close to home—like Sandpoint’s very own Pend d’Oreille Winery. Create A New Look in Your Kitchen or Bath IT’S AS SIMPLE AS REPLACING YOUR HARDWARE By Nikki Luttmann, Seven Bee Interiors For Sandpoint Furniture, Carpet One and Selkirk Glass and Cabinets
O 24
ne of the quickest and easiest ways to update a tired kitchen or bath is with the addition or change of cabinetry hardware. It seems like a small thing, but often small changes can make a big impact. If you, like so many people in our area, have a house from the building boom in the early 2000s, you may have a kitchen full of the ubiquitous “golden oak” cabinets. Popular through the 1980s and 1990s, here in North Idaho and beyond, the golden oak era reigned supreme well into the new millennium, as some local builders were slower to pick up on new trends.
fingers and dirt, but also from fingernails, which are particularly harmful to the finish on painted cabinets.
If your cabinetry is in good shape, but just looks a little dated, switching or adding hardware will update your look. If your cabinets are newer, but lack hardware, I recommend adding it ASAP. Hardware—cabinet handles and pulls—extends the life of your cabinetry by protecting it from greasy
For finish ideas, look to your existing light fixtures. Do you have oilrubbed-bronze (ORB) pendant lights in the kitchen? Then ORB or black hardware might be the right choice for your cabinetry hardware. Satin nickel vanity light in your bathroom? Satin nickel or pewter might work
|SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL
Cabinetry hardware is one of the most fun—but also daunting—finishes to choose for your home. There are so many options available in both finishes and style that it can be difficult to choose. Just remember, with this element of your home, go for function in your most used spaces, like kitchens or master baths, and have a little more fun in places that require less use, like a powder bath or wet bar.

for your cabinetry. However, that said, mixing metal finishes is usually just fine! One of my favorite kitchens included copper pulls on the painted dark gray perimeter of the kitchen, and black pulls on the cherry wood island. It made for a fun and playful contrast, but also balanced out the two looks. My advice is to go to a showroom and take a look at the hardware in person. Wrap your hand around the pulls and knobs that you like to make sure they are comfortable in your hand. If you still aren’t sure, purchase one piece to take home to see how it looks in your space. Remember, if you are replacing hardware, then it is easiest to match your existing drilled holes in your cabinet. Bring an existing pull with you to make sure you are getting the right size. It can be trickier to measure these than you might think, so making sure they match exactly is an important step. Selkirk Glass and Cabinets in Ponderay has a wide array of hardware to choose from, and the sales staff there can help you find the right size and shape to suit your needs. As well, they are introducing Rocky Mountain Hardware—a line of luxury hardware with an iconic, rustic look—for both doors and cabinetry. Stop in and take a look!

TEACHER OF THE MONTH By Colin Anderson
Rand Rosecrans Nutrition, Culinary Arts & Teen Living Lake Pend Oreille High School
T
he impact a teacher can have on a student often goes well beyond the classroom. A student recently opened up to Lake Pend Oreille High School teacher Rand Rosecrans, and what he told him was something he will never forget. “I had a student tell me, ‘This school (LPO) saved my life.’ The student then told me I had played a part in that,” said Rand.
engaged in the management of challenging times,” he said. Rand wants to see each of his students reach their full potential and believes there are a few simple guidelines to follow that will lead to success: 1. Show up. Be present and punctual every time. It does not matter if it is an appointment, work, school, or coffee with a friend. Being present and punctual is a form of self respect and integrity and shows respect for others.
Rand is happy to be teaching again in his native state. He’s been an educator for 20 years and began his career in Alaska as a chef/instructor at a remote public boarding school. At LPO he continues his "Sometimes we work in culinary with courses in nutrition and learn the most foods, international cuisine, culinary arts and teen when we are living. “I am simultaneously humbled and motivated engaged in the that, built into my work, I have the awesome management of opportunity and potential to have a very positive and impactful influence on the challenging times." lives of my students every single day,” Rand explained. Like all teachers, Rand has had to adapt his curriculum this school year and misses seeing students' faces every day. Strategies are continuing to be laid out to integrate the classroom experience with online learning. “As we move forward I believe we can adapt by accepting the fact that this current situation can be a struggle for all. Sometimes we learn the most when we are
2. Be kind. The superpower of kindness toward others allows us to uplift, inspire and empower. Kindness gives us the ability to rise above the din of division and delusion that currently seems so prevalent in our world. Let us use the power of kindness to get back to a place of unity and strength.
3. Work hard. Hard work is still the key to success. At school, at your job, in relationships with others, take responsibility for your own life and actions through the powerful catalyst of hard work. The world owes you nothing but will reward you if you diligently earn, create and build your own story. Sometimes someone points at the world around them and makes excuses for why they can’t do, or blames others for what they cannot have. This is a one-way first-class ticket to failure.

During the conversation, Tomo shared a valuable lesson he learned early in his career that still inspires him today. As a young adult writing for smaller, local businesses, Tomo demonstrated a talent for creating relatable, targeted marketing campaigns and ad copy. His success led to an offer from a larger firm. Tomo jumped at the opportunity, though he wondered if, maybe, he would be in over his head. “I had been at the new job a few days, enough time to meet everyone, get acclimated, help out with a project or two. I came in one morning to find my first solo assignment waiting for me. They wanted me to write an eBook. I had never written an eBook. In fact, I had no idea how to write any kind of book. So, I sat there, reading the assignment over and over again, feeling the fear build up inside me. “I wasn’t afraid of failing. I had failed before and learned from those

failures. My fear was someone finding out I didn’t know what I was doing. In that moment, it felt like everything I had accomplished before didn’t matter, because I was too focused on what I’d never done. “I sat there, staring at the blank page on my computer screen, debating my next move. I could just leave. If I left, they would never find out. Tempting, but I knew giving into my fear would mean losing that opportunity, and probably others. “So, I gathered my courage and walked to my colleague’s desk. Over his 30-year career, Dave had seen it all. I was a little in awe, wondering how to tell him what I was thinking, when I heard myself blurt out: ‘They asked me to write a book, and I have no idea how!’ “Dave smiled, offered some direction to get me started, and said, ‘Just begin. You’ll figure it out.’ Then Dave shared a quote that, he said, resonated with him; and it has certainly helped me through some rough spots over the years: ‘It took me 15 years to discover I had no talent for writing, but I couldn’t give up … by that time I was too successful.’
"I remind myself that as long as I keep growing, keep investing in myself and in others, our team will be who we need to be to realize our greater vision."
“Because of my fear of being found out, it took me a long time to realize, and longer to accept, that everyone already knew I didn’t know everything, and that was okay. They saw me face challenges, and they respected me for overcoming them; knew my shortcomings and appreciated the quality of my work. They cared about who I was and what I did. I earned their trust by living my values and growing through each new challenge. I didn’t need to fear being found out, because they already knew me. That awareness led to so much freedom. “Today, more than 20 years later, my business is growing, and I sometimes wonder if there will come a time when it’s too big for me. Then, I remind myself that as long as I keep growing, keep investing in myself and in others, our team will be who we need to be to realize our greater vision.”

W
hether you’re looking for plans for Valentine’s Day, or just love delicious stouts, the 219 Lounge’s Dark Love Stout Week is made for February and beer lovers. Every day from February 8 through the 14, they’ll be pouring new stouts to help brighten the dark winter days. Starting on Monday, February 8, the 219 will release two new (mostly) bourbon barrel-aged stouts every day, with 11 stouts on tap Saturday and Sunday. “We’re excited to make it a week-long event,” says 219 manager Mark Terry. Each beer was specially selected for the event and isn’t readily available to customers, as many are one-time beers, so this may be your only opportunity to try them. “What makes these beers special is that the majority of them have spent over a year in bourbon barrels,” adds Terry. The result is an incredibly rich, decadent brew, with an unusually high alcohol

On Saturday, February 13, the 219 will welcome back live music for the first time in a long while with the Jason Perry Trio from Spokane. If you’re looking for a quieter time to visit and taste the stouts when it’s easier to spread out, plan ahead and visit during the week. There is no cover charge or tickets required, but limited glassware will be available starting Monday. $15 gets you a unique diner-style mug you can take home, along with two 5-ounce pours. Additional 5- and 12-ounce pours will be available for purchase. To learn more, visit 219.bar or @219Lounge on Facebook, and mark your calendars for a seasonal favorite!

Open Hearts and Healing Hands Treat yourself, or someone you love, to a day at the spa BY JILLIAN CHANDLER
HIGHLANDS NORTH DAY SPA 1315 Highway 2, Suite 5 Sandpoint, Idaho 83864 208.263.3211 HighlandsNorthDaySpa.com
“I learned a long time ago that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care—and I have staff that show they care."
“W
e are a beautiful blend of heart and soul, medical and spa atmosphere mixed together,” shares Arla Markael, the woman behind Highlands North Day Spa in Sandpoint.
Serving Sandpoint and surrounding communities since August of 2018, Arla has a passion for healing and for people. “I learned a long time ago that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care—and I have staff that show they care," she says. Arla works hard to create a supportive work environment for her staff while taking care of them with a loving approach. In turn, they lovingly take care of each and every client who walks through their doors. “I am constantly bringing myself into alignment with a heart-based approach to all we do and talking about that with my amazing staff to approach their clients with that same heart,” she says. It was after receiving massage during pregnancy that Arla first fell in love with massage, though, she admits, she was still skeptical about “spa time.” Growing up on a farm in Bonners Ferry bucking hay bales, working on her dad’s sawmill and tending huge gardens, spa time was a “bit of fluff ” in Arla’s mind. It wasn’t until after she had purchased the spa (with her previous business partner) that she truly realized what a beautiful—and healing— place that was created.

“I was under some of the worst stress imaginable, working 80-hour weeks and really struggling,” she recalls. “One of my staff practically forced me to do a spa treatment with an exfoliation, mud wrap, and herbal wrap ending in a massage. By the time we were done, I honestly could not remember why I was so stressed, and that bliss lasted several days. I was completely on board! And I am so proud to be in such a healing industry!”
more advanced than old-style compression therapy,” she affirms. It’s also phenomenal for weight loss, according to Arla. “I have seen people who have struggled for years (active people with nutrition backgrounds) finally have success!" And it reduces cellulite and scarring, including stretch mark fading. And it’s a must for athletes for injury healing and reduction of lactic acid.
At Highlands North Day Spa, they not only provide massage (hot stone, relaxation, deep tissue and therapeutic, and are adding Medical), facials and anti-aging skin care, but also far infrared sauna, an Anespa mineral shower, which heals skin and hair (like being at the best hot springs on the planet!), and Kangen (high alkaline with minerals, electrolytes and antioxidants) water—which is extremely beneficial and deeply hydrating because of how the ionized molecules respond in the body.
In addition to their wellness treatments, they offer beauty services as well: lash lifts, tints and extensions, waxing, nail and hair care, and more.
Arla is excited to announce that Highlands North Day Spa is becoming a Ballancer Pro Lymphatic Drainage provider. “This is more amazing that I can express!” she smiles. With more than 40 years of research on this machine, it was almost immediately approved with the FDA once it hit the U.S. just three years ago. Approximately 30 of these machines make it to the U.S. each year—and Highlands North Day Spa has one! “It is a full-body machine that is like having four to six licensed massage therapists working on your body at once, and the technology is so much
Arla is grateful to the community and clients she serves. She takes great joy seeing her clients leave in bliss, “knowing the healing that has taken place in their bodies and hearts.” “Massage can actually help release pent-up emotions/stress as well as trauma from physical injury that has happened to the body, aiding in healing,” shares Arla. “Just knowing that when someone is on that table they are in the rest and repair brainwave is gratifying. And in the other areas of skin care and beauty treatments, knowing clients feel more confident, beautiful and serene is really amazing!” Treat yourself, or someone you love, to one or more of the wonderful services offered at Highlands North Day Spa, where Arla and her team are waiting with healing hands and open hearts. The Sites, Sounds and Smells of Americ ana A CROSS-COUNTRY RIDE THROUGH AMERICA’S HEARTLAND
By Abigail Thorpe
IT WAS LIKE HAVING A JOB—ONLY EACH DAY INSTEAD OF HEADING TO THE OFFICE, HE’D JUMP ON HIS BIKE FOR AN AVERAGE OF 85 MILES THROUGH THE HEARTLAND OF AMERICA. 36

“W
hen you ride, you see things you’d never see from a car,” explains Mel Dick, who returned from a cross-country bike ride from Sandpoint, Idaho, to Key West, Florida, just a few months ago. In the six months leading up to his trip, Mel road 20 to 75 miles every day to prepare for the grueling 4,000-mile ride that would take just two months. It was like having a job—only each day instead of heading to the office, he’d jump on his bike for an average of 85 miles through the heartland of America, where he made new friends, connected with old ones, and gained a picture of life in America that inspired, sobered and delighted. Going into the trip there was some apprehension— after all, he was riding 4,000 to 5,000 miles through rugged mountains, expansive prairies, remote backcountry and along deserted highways entirely solo. Apart from his bike and a trailer he named Bob
filled with 60 pounds of supplies to last two days and spare gear, Mel was on his own. This wasn’t his first cross-country trip, but it was by far one of the most unique. In 2008 he did a 10,000mile trip cross-country, followed by a 1,500 mile in 2016 and participated on a team that rode 3,000 miles as part of a Race Across America several years ago. But this trip he rode across America during fire season in the west, hurricane season in the south and east, nation-wide political and social upheaval, and a pandemic. The plan was to ride from Sandpoint through Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, across Kansas, Missouri and Tennessee, and south through Mississippi, Alabama and Florida to Key West, raising a penny a mile for 5,000 miles to benefit the youth services programs of the Sandpoint Rotary Club. Three direct hurricanes as he came into the southeast spurred multiple route changes, taking him directly through the Ozarks and some of the

toughest riding he’s ever experienced: relentless hills, steep, long grades, and dangerous blind curves. The route changes cut his trip to 4,000 miles, and so he walked the remaining 1,000 miles in Key West, determined to reach his goal and fulfill his promise. The journey was a much different ride during the second half. “The whole thing kind of changed at that point in time to much more getting to know the locals as opposed to meeting other riders on the road,” says Mel. Because of COVID people had taken to their RVs, campers, bikes and motorcycles to get outside; one of the few remaining activities and travel that still allowed for social distancing. Indoor dining and events may have been canceled throughout Colorado, Wyoming and Montana, but the campsites were full. In Breckenridge, the main street was closed off to traffic, and the bars and restaurants were serving outdoors. But as he got farther east things were more subdued. Streets were silent and lots of businesses had closed. Those that remained open were operating with to-go orders for food, and many of the hotels and motels remained empty. But the people were generous, open and kind. It was “the sights, sounds and smells of rural America at its best,” smiles Mel. Communities welcomed him, and in the dearth of food options, convenience stores became a regular haunt. He watched people from all walks of like come and go from what he describes as the “melting pot of America.” Grabbing their coffee and burrito for the day, construction workers picking up bags of ice. “They’re all walks of life, they're every ethnicity you can imagine, and they’re all getting along very well. It kind of struck me the vast majority of the country really gets along,” reflects Mel. His trip took place as America was experiencing much unrest and the cities were filled with riots, protests and discontent. But mid, rural Americana was a different story from what the news channels portrayed. People were getting along, and everyone was eager to help each other, to be a part of Mel’s journey. 38

In Missouri, as he was waiting for a shop to tune up his bike, a guy came running in off the street and greeted Mel, asking for a picture together. He was a complete stranger but knew some owners of a small country store Mel had spoken to several days before. The man had recognized Mel’s bike trailer outside the bike shop from what the couple had told him. Another day in Florida, a guy in line at a convenience store had forgotten his wallet, so Mel covered his $10 purchase. An hour later Mel was at a bike shop to get some work done, and after several hours of working on his bike, the shop told him he didn’t owe a thing. It was a pay-it-forward moment for Mel. “It renewed my faith in how genuine and how real people really are.” By the end of his journey, Mel had gone 5,000 miles, met strangers who became friends, and raised just over $14,000—more than his initial goal of $10,000. Of the funds raised, $2,500 went to support the Resource Closet at Farmin Stidwell Elementary School, which provides basic necessities to students and families in need. An additional $3,000 of it will provide six $500 scholarships to the Bulldog Resilience initiative at Sandpoint High School, where students create their own project representing what resilience means to them. Asked if he would do it again, Mel smiles. For him, cycling and exercise is a type of health insurance policy. Health permitting, he plans to do another trip in two and half years when he turns 70, and then another cross-country trip at 80. “With a goal of saying I want to be able to do this when I’m 80, then I know I’ll stay healthy,” he laughs.

GOLDEN GUERNSEY GOODNESS A LOOK INSIDE BONNER COUNTY’S ONLY GRADE A COW DAIRY BY ABIGAIL THORPE
D
rive down Dufort Road in Sagle, and tucked back in off a side road you’ll find Pleasant Meadow Creamery, a family owned, family run dairy that produces milk the gold old-fashioned way, and where the cows still graze freely in the fields. It’s Bonner and Kootenai counties’ only Grade A cow dairy, and as you drive up you can glimpse the Guernsey cows roaming contentedly in one of the several open fields.
The Herndons moved from Colorado to South Sandpoint in 2004 and, the following year, discovered 20 acres out in Sagle that was mostly flat, wooded and had a stream running through it—the perfect place to build their home. That spring they moved onto the property and built the first barn and an apartment above to live in, and in 2006, they introduced goats to the family acreage for personal milk. But there were two drawbacks to goats. One, when you have a surplus of milk, no one wants it. Second, they The Herndon family owns and runs the dairy, only milk five or six months out of the year with which first started back in 2011 with one any volume. first Guernsey arrived, the family had added an additional 20 acres to their land and needed a cow to graze it. Soon, that one cow would grow to several, and those 40 acres became Pleasant Meadow Creamery. The Herndons were selling in one store under the Idaho Small Herd Exemption, and their raw guernsey milk was gaining traction—they couldn’t produce enough for demand. Today, they milk 17 cows, with six additional cows in line to join over the next year and a half. They are now a licensed Grade A Idaho dairy and will have their organic certification by the end of this summer. Their ladies still graze out on the fertile soil every day, and you can find Pleasant Meadow Creamery milk in multiple
stores throughout Bonner, Boundary and Kootenai counties. The entire family works the farm—Paul and his wife Debra and their son and three daughters. The family is up and out the door of the main house Paul built in 2010 at 5:45am every morning. “Our lives are seven days per week and at least 12 hours per day, between our multiple jobs and school. There is little time for recreation in a family dairy, but we do love what we do and derive pleasure from it,” says Paul. Each family member has a specific job. Paul handles providing hay on hay days—certified organic clover/grass hay that they produce on a leased 20 acres and has the same nutrients as the fresh grass the cows graze in summer. He’s
also responsible for managing the herd—any breeding that needs to be done, natural health care for the cows and keeping detailed records of everything. When he’s not wandering the fields or one of the several barns or buildings he built from the ground up, he’s upstairs working at his private CPA practice, a trained eye always on the fields analyzing the cows’ behavior. If a cow’s in distress, Paul is the one who tends to it. The family uses natural remedies and herbal tinctures for pretty much everything, a process they’ve found much more successful and healthy for the herd than using conventional medicine and antibiotics. It also allows them to remain organic, as one antibiotic or inorganic supplement, and that cow has to be removed from the herd and production.
Paul and Debra’s three daughters feed the calves, clean pens, fill waters and more, and their son works full time milking the herd two times a day, every day but Sunday; Sunday Paul milks. Debra records the prior day’s production each morning and plans for bottling on their four bottling days. On these days, bottling starts around 7:30am, and the van is loaded around 9am for distribution to their stores. “An average day is every day of the year,” laughs Paul. The evenings end with more feedings, cleaning and care, but the family is all in it together. It’s not every day you get to see a working dairy farm, one family at the helm. “The testimony of our customers is what proves to us that this is a product that is special,” explains Paul. “First and foremost, the number one compliment is that this is the best-tasting milk people have ever had. The second biggest compliment comes from people who had given up drinking milk believing it was incompatible with their bodies—until they tried ours and discovered it was quite compatible.”
You can find their milk in Yoke’s, Winter Ridge, and all of the Super 1 Foods from Bonners Ferry to Post Falls, as well as at Pilgrim’s Market in Coeur d’Alene and Only Local in Westmond. You’ll notice a soft golden hue to the milk—a result of the beta carotene from grass passing directly into the fat of the animal and into the milk—and the reason they call it “Golden Guernsey Goodness.”
Their organic processes extend to the fields, where they adhere not only to the standards, but the principles of being organic. “All human health

“Each time a guest tastes our wine and has a positive experience, we are rewarded."
“I
love seeing the look on people’s faces the first time they walk through our door and try our wine and food,” smiles Jim Bopp, co-owner and winemaker of Pend d’Oreille Winery. “We’re just a little winery in Northern Idaho, but I think people quickly realize we have a very quality product to offer.”
Founded by Steve and Julie Meyer, Pend d’Oreille Winery opened in 1995. Jim and partner Kylie Presta purchased the business in 2017, continuing the legacy that the Meyers created more than a quarter century ago. Inspired by the winemaking process and opportunity to continue to learn the science, the history and the art of producing a quality wine is what led Jim and Kylie to become involved in the Pend d’Oreille Winery. “Being involved in the business allows us to tell the story of Pend d’Oreille wines,” smiles Kylie. The intimate, hands-on winery produces locally made, award-winning wines; approximately 17 varietals from grapes sourced from the Columbia Valley. The winemaking team is attentive to each step of the wine-making process to ensure the most balanced and complex product. “We are involved with the entire process—from fruit to glass, as we intend to produce a quality wine enjoyed by many.” The owners continue to move forward with growth and new ideas, and new wines, while also keeping the traditions the winery laid down before them.

Here guests are invited to stop in to enjoy a superb glass of wine and an artisan pizza in the friendly yet elegant atmosphere that’s been created. “We hope all guests feel welcome when they enter our tasting room and enjoy a glass of excellence,” Kylie affirms. “We maintain a local connection while also extending our presence nationwide through our wine club.” At Pend d’Oreille Winery, it is a collaborative effort. From those conducting the making of the wine to the employees producing the food and serving the wine in the tasting room, Jim says it takes everyone’s contributions—the incredible staff and the seamless teamwork they maintain—to deliver an experience. Both born and raised in Sandpoint, Jim and Kylie share the same story of moving away to pursue higher education and travel opportunities—eventually returning to the home they love. They, and their families, are deeply rooted in the Sandpoint community and agree it is “an honor to be part of the local business community, as our local businesses support one another. We work together, we promote one another, we strengthen one another.”
“I love living here in Sandpoint. As a true native to the area, being able to, now as I’ve gotten older, give back and be involved in the community has been wonderful,” shares Jim. “This community helped raise me, so now that I’m able to be part of helping raise the next generation, and hopefully help make Sandpoint a better place, has been very fulfilling.” Pend d’Oreille Winery supports local nonprofits through their Sip-n-Shop events. Kylie and Jim also volunteer with local nonprofits and support community events. They invite you to stop by their tasting room (open noon to 8pm Tuesday through Sunday) to taste what they have to offer. This month marks the release of their Huckleberry Blush, and L’Oeuvre is February’s Wine of the Month. Be sure to pair a glass of one of these wines with one of their handcrafted meals from their kitchen. “Each time a guest tastes our wine and has a positive experience, we are rewarded," they share. "We enjoy making these wines, and we can only present them and hope they are well-received. We hope guests taste the dedication, attention and fun we put into our wines.” SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL

enior Camille Neuder has been with the Sandpoint High School cross-country team since before she was even in high school. This spring she will captain her team for one last season. For Camille, it’s been the experience of a lifetime. “The journey that cross country has been makes it the highlight of my high school experience and really of my life. The culture of support, positivity, dedication, passion and friendship have taught me more lessons about life and the person I want to be than anything else,” she said. Camille also lettered and captained the crosscountry team this past fall and has competed in the state golf tournament, placing third with her team in 2019. A student of many interests, Camille sits at the top of her class, has received multiple scholastic awards, and was also named the local and state winner of the Distinguished Young Women program. A trying time for Camille came after an injury her freshman season. It took her out of competition for the entirety of her sophomore year, but she was determined not to give up. “What kept me going was that I still came to
practice every day, I still got to have time with my teammates and wonderful coaches, and when everyone would go out to run, I would go over to SWAC (now YMCA) and do my own workout of either swimming or being on the elliptical,” she recalled. “It was definitely challenging, but 100 times more rewarding. Nothing could top the feeling of getting to go on that first run back with my team.” Camille plans to keep running when she goes to college, but as a way to clear her mind, give her day a boost and stay healthy. She is awaiting entrance decisions to some of the top engineering schools in the country and wants to pursue a degree in engineering physics or environmental science. “I want to work on making renewable and clean energy more accessible, affordable and efficient. I have always had a passion for math and science, and I want to be able to focus that passion to help fuel my passion for environmental protection,” she said. Finally, Camille wants to thank her coach Angie Brass, who she now calls not just coach, but mentor and friend: “She has taught me so many lessons, and one that is particularly special is that silence is acceptance, you have your voice for a reason, and that you are strong enough to use it to stand up for what is right.”

hether it’s on the wrestling mat or the football field, Sandpoint High School senior Tag Benefield loves to compete. In football, Tag thrives on the defensive side of the ball. He was named Defensive MVP for the third time his senior season and was also recently named to the first team for the state of Idaho at linebacker. Colleges are taking notice, and Tag is still considering where he might want to suit up and continue his career after graduation this spring.

Tag knows that the more effort he puts into his craft, the better he will ultimately become. “A lesson that I have learned is that nothing is given, and if you want something, you have to work for it.” This was especially true for Tag during his junior year, when he suffered a major knee injury. An intense rehab plan was put in place, and Tag was determined to compete at the state tournament in his other favorite sport—wrestling. Through hard work and determination, Tag was able not just to compete again but at an extremely high level, eventually taking home a third-place finish at the state tournament in his weight class. He is currently well into his senior season of wrestling and has his sights set on another trip to state in hopes of becoming champion.

Of the numerous sports Tag has played over the years, football remains his favorite. “It’s the competition and getting to play with all of my friends that makes it my favorite,” he explained. His abilities and leadership qualities have led him to be named captain of both the football and wrestling teams for his senior season. Tag is considering a major in either business or physical therapy, and the University of Idaho is one of the schools he is considering attending.

A PATHWAY TO THE FUTURE Changes in store for Sandpoint’s City Beach BY ABIGAIL THORPE
S
ince City Beach was first formed almost 100 years ago in 1922 on land donated by the Northern Pacific Railroad, the waterfront land has served as a community gathering place for families, visitors and locals alike. Improvements in the 1950s served to create a more welcoming and usable spot, without the flooding that early years saw in the area, and over the years, City Beach has become a popular spot cherished by locals and enjoyed by visitors. On any sunny summer day, its waterfront is filled with families and individuals enjoying the lake and grassy open spaces. While changes have gradually been made over the years, there has never been a master plan to help determine how to best utilize the space. A brand-new Master Plan introduced by the City plans to change that. The new project—part of a master plan that includes future design changes for City Beach, War Memorial Field, the Downtown Waterfront and Travers/Centennial/Great Northern Sports Complex—centers around a goal of maximizing the value of the waterfront for public use.

The City Beach Concept Plan is shaped around five design principles and community values the City looks to honor: maintaining the park as a community gathering space, maximizing the waterfront for public use, connecting the park with other recreation and downtown activities, repurposing underutilized areas, and contributing to the economic vitality of the city. The Master Plan was no small undertaking. The City of Sandpoint went through a year-long planning process that involved members of the community and local and city organizations before it went before the City Council and was approved this past September. The City wanted to make sure that any Master Plan was a reflection not only of the City’s growing needs, but also of residents’ and visitors’ desires. With that in mind, a random sample survey was sent to various Sandpoint households, and an open online survey was available for those who wanted to contribute their input, including those from surrounding areas who actively use Sandpoint’s amenities. The City held several

workshops and focus groups, and did key stakeholder interviews, in order to drive the vision of the Master Plan. “What we are most proud of and excited about is that we have developed a vision through community involvement and as a city organization, and we have a commitment that we will deliver what we say we are going to do,” says Jennifer Stapleton, Sandpoint city administrator. The Master Plan is the first in the City’s history, and was designed to look to the future in creating public spaces that allow people to enjoy the incredible beauty and community of Sandpoint. With this in mind, the plan was created to provide a concept and goal, with the funding and actual implementation of the plan to follow. “Once you have a vision and a concept, it allows people to think beyond what currently exists and buy into that vision and what something could be,” explains Stapleton. The concept was developed around a visioning exercise rather than a specific dollar amount or ceiling cap in order to create a long-term vision that wasn’t restricted by dollars. “A question was asked in the survey about how people would like to see us accomplish this, and public/private partnership for funding was overwhelmingly supported,” she adds.

between the City of Sandpoint and the Cox family for the property that currently serves as the RV park in exchange for the grassy area currently in front of the Edgewater Resort. The exchange, which is currently in the works, will allow for the city boat launch to be realigned and moved to the waterfront area the RV park currently occupies, allowing for more boat moorage, increased public access to the waterfront, and increased safety and ease, since the launch will no longer compete with other activities taking place in the area. As part of the process, the RV park will move into City ownership and serve as a revenue source until the design and construction of the boat launch is completed, which the city hopes to do in the next two to three years. The Edgewater hotel anticipates a tear down and reconstruction of the iconic hotel and restaurant starting in September, with plans to rebuild and double the size of the resort. Further plans for City Beach involve a connecting boardwalk that runs under the train bridge and byway to connect the downtown waterfront side with the City Beach side, as well as a larger playground with a splash pad, and increased parking for boats and vehicles.
As the vision develops, the City will look to grants, assistance from outside organizations and nonprofits, private donors and additional revenue streams to help fund the projects as time, support and demand allow.
“All of us who live in this area and enjoy City Beach appreciate the challenges of parking and accessing down there in peak summertime,” says Stapleton. As development and growth in the area continues, coupled with an increased demand for outdoor activities due to COVID, the City has been even more motivated to prioritize parks and recreation projects.
One of the first steps in the plan for City Beach involves a land swap
Down the road, the Master Plan also calls for a large performance

structure and activity pad on the western side of the park that would accommodate concerts and performances, and even serve seasonally as basketball courts or other court games. The hardscape surface could also serve as an ice rink during winter months, providing an additional activity for the community. The area directly east would be further opened up to allow for a viewing space, which would become the largest uninterrupted open space within the park, forming a central green with views eastward to the lake.
Comfort by design in your home!
The Master Plan is driven by a long-term vision that includes the already greatly improved War Memorial Field, City Beach, the Downtown Waterfront and Travers/Centennial/Great Northern Sports Complex, which means it will take effort, time and careful planning to accomplish. “As we’re thinking about how we launch this, we have to be thinking about it as a whole, because what we don’t want to do is take away a use in one park until we get that use to another park,” explains Stapleton. Phasing is likely to occur across multiple parks simultaneously, as the Master Plan takes shape over 10 to 15 years, which is a lofty goal. The City specifically approached the Master Plan in this way in order to be driven by a long-term shared vision that would accommodate growth and development as well as city needs for years to come, rather than being product driven. “We as a city, under the guidance of elected officials, intentionally went about engaging the community, developing long-term shared visions and leveraging our dollars in a way that would extend beyond a specific elected official or group of elected officials,” says Stapleton. “It’s a pathway to the future for Sandpoint.”

Sprain, Strain or Just in Pain? The importance of RICE: rest, ice, compression and elevation
By Emily Hedine, PTA student, and Mindy Murray, OT/R, Owner, Kauai Therapy & Wellness
H
ave you ever had an injury that resulted in pain, swelling and weakness? It is extremely common for anyone of all ages to suffer a strain or sprain just doing everyday things.
In the United States, approximately 2 million acute ankle sprains occur annually, according to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. Have you ever experienced spraining your ankle or straining your back during physical activity? You are not alone; those are two of the most common injuries. A sprain and a strain are very similar, but let’s explain their differences and how to care for each injury. A sprain and strain are defined by: Sprain: Overstretching or a tear in a ligament, which connects bone to bone. Your ankle is the most common area to sprain on your body.

SPRAIN, STRAIN OR JUST IN PAIN?
THE BEST WAY
We take urgent patients! If you are suffering from a sprain, strain or just in pain, let us know and we will see you the same day.
TO CARE FOR A SPRAIN AND A STRAIN IS TO FOLLOW THE ACRONYM RICE.
The focus of the first few days is to decrease swelling and pain. The best way to care for a sprain and a strain is to follow the acronym RICE: Rest (may require you to use crutches), Ice (20 minutes four to eight times a day, with 40 minutes in between icing), Compression (may require you to use an ace wrap or boot), Elevation (prop injury up on a pillow above your heart). After treating pain and swelling of the injury, it is time to move into gaining full range of motion and strengthening at the joint to help prevent another injury from occurring. By not allowing your injury enough time to heal you are at risk for reinjury if you push yourself too soon and too hard.
Strengthening your ankles is a very beneficial way to prevent an ankle sprain. A couple of easy at-home exercises you could do to strengthen your ankle include balancing on an uneven surface like a pillow or a bosu ball, starting with two feet then progressing to make it harder by bringing your feet closer together; closing your eyes or standing on one leg; or drawing the alphabet with your toes pointed in the air while seated. If your pain remains, it is important to seek out your health-care professionals. The information provided is a recommendation and should be followed using good judgment and a consultation with your medical doctor or physical therapist.
No Insurance? No Problem! We have affordable solutions for those without insurance or who have high deductibles or copay, and we accept medical insurance.

INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL) We answer your most common questions BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA, PLLC
H
ave you ever wondered how to get rid of those brown spots on your skin? Have those spider veins on your face been bothering you every time you look in the mirror? Keep reading to find out more on intense pulsed light (IPL) and how you can quickly and efficiently treat skin imperfections. What is (IPL) intense pulsed light? IPL is used to treat pigmented and vascular lesions. IPL uses photothermolysis, which provides a photofacial through the delivery of a comfortable light treatment. After just one treatment, patients generally see significant improvement in the clarity and complexions of their skin. What are the benefits? IPL improves the appearance of age spots (red/brown pigmentations), vascular lesions such as facial telangiectasia (spider veins), rosacea (redness), freckles and sun damage. It can not be used to treat melasma, a condition that causes dark, discolored patches on the skin, typically a result of hormonal changes (pregnancy, birth control). It is important to see a trained provider who can correctly identify your skin condition to provide appropriate treatment. Treating melasma with IPL can make the discoloration darker and more pronounced. What areas can be treated? IPL can be used on all areas of the body. Most common treatment areas include the face, neck, chest and back of hands, however, larger areas can also be treated if needed. What are the steps that must be taken before treatment? Avoid direct, excessive sun exposure and tanning for three to four weeks prior to treatment. If there is any pigment/tan on your skin, you risk pigment irregularities. Do not

SERVICES INCLUDE: Botox/Dysport | Dermal Fillers Microneedling | Sculptra Aesthetic Skin Care | Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy spray tan or use self-tanners two weeks prior. Discontinue the use of Retinol three to four days before treatment. Antibiotics that cause photosensitivity should also be avoided for one week prior to treatment, and you should consult with your medical provider to determine if any medication you are taking is contraindicated. All these steps are taken to ensure you receive the safest treatment. What should I expect during and after treatment? You will be given protective eyewear to wear. There will be a bright flash of light from the laser, and you will feel a sensation on your skin that feels like a light snap from an elastic band. Redness and slight warming of the skin are normal after treatment, and usually subsides within an hour. Sunscreen will be applied before leaving your appointment. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, you may see a darkening of pigmented spots; a week afterward, the pigmented lesions will begin to flake off. After treating vascular lesions, you may see the vein blanch or disappear, or a color change in the vessel that will dissipate after a few days.
How many treatments are recommended? Improved skin appearance is often visible after one session. Multiple sessions will continue to improve your results. For most patients, one to three treatments are recommended. How much does IPL cost? Prices for treatments vary from practice to practice, and generally range from $300 to $600 per treatment area. Often, packages can be purchased for additional savings. Are there any side effects? Most patients experience a warm sensation to the treatment area that resolves within an hour. It is important that you wear sunscreen to protect the skin, as it is more susceptible to burn and photodamage. You will leave your treatment with sunscreen on, and it is recommended you avoid direct sunlight or tanning. The decision to have IPL done should be discussed with your dermatologist or aesthetic provider. Schedule a consultation to discuss if you are a candidate and what you can expect for results with treatment.

KIDS ENT HEALTH MONTH F R O M I N FA N T S T O T E E N S , T I P S F O R K E E P I N G Y O U R K I D S ' E A R S , N O S E A N D T H R O AT H E A LT H Y AT E V E R Y A G E By Dr. Susan Anderson, Otolaryngologist, Bonner General Health
F
ebruary is Kids ENT Health month. Ear, nose and throat ailments are a prime reason children need health care. Primary care providers and pediatricians manage the majority of these complaints. Common conditions that bring a child to an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose and throat specialist) are recurring ear infections, concern for hearing loss/ speech delay, nasal congestion, nose bleeds and tonsil-related issues. Ear infections are the most common ailment in childhood; 80 to 90 percent of children will have an ear infection by 3 years of age, with the highest incidence being between 6 and 18 months. Ear infections are also the most common cause of antibiotic use in children in the United States. Fortunately, most ear infections resolve with treatment, and children typically outgrow ear infections by ages 3 to 5 years. A consultation with an otolaryngologist for children who have four ear infections within six months or six within 12 months is recommended. If the fluid in the small space behind the eardrum (the middle ear) does not resolve within three months of an ear infection, a specialist's referral is warranted. These children will frequently need ear tubes to help the middle ear fluid drain, thus preventing the build-up of liquid and bacteria in the middle ear. 1 Tonsil and adenoid issues are common for consultation in the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic. The tonsils are located in the back of the mouth on each side. The adenoid is in the back of the nose. The tonsils are visible by looking in the mouth, but the adenoids typically cannot be seen on routine exams. Evaluating the adenoid usually requires passing an endoscope through the nose or obtaining an X-ray. The tonsils and adenoids are lymphoid tissue and part of the immune system, but their role is limited. Removing them does not weaken the immune system, and for some, removal may reduce the frequency of illnesses. A provider may consider removing the tonsils or adenoids if they are excessively enlarged or frequently infected. Tonsils and adenoids do not need to be infected to become enlarged. Children often have obstructive problems from enlarged tonsils and adenoids without ever having had sore throats or "strep throat." Problems sometimes caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids are: • Obstructed breathing during sleep (i.e., sleep apnea) • Poor disposition and irritable behavior
60
|SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL
• Eating problems • Constant nasal obstruction and congestion • Poor alignment of teeth • Abnormal facial development Parents may seek consultation regarding tonsils after noticing loud snoring and restless sleep. A newer ailment seen in the ENT Clinic is hearing loss in teens and adolescents associated with earbuds or headphones. Kids listen to electronic media at levels that are often louder than what is allowed by law in a workplace, leading to high-frequency hearing loss. However, it is not just the volume causing the hearing changes, but the amount of time using earbuds/ headphones. Children today spend more time listening to electronic media. Hearing damage is similar to sun damage; it is additive over time, and too much causes harm. One study showed 14.2 percent of school-aged children have high-frequency hearing loss or other audiometric changes. 2 To protect your child's hearing, kids should take breaks after an hour of listening and turn the volume down to about 60 percent on their audio players. 3 The best practice for everyone is that you should be able to hear conversations going on around you while listening to your media with earbuds/headphones. Also, kids should not sleep with their earbuds/headphones on; this is additional "trauma time" to their hearing. BOOST YOUR OUTLOOK
N
ot being able to participate in many of the activities you used to, attend events that you’ve loved year after year, and even missing the holiday traditions you’d been anticipating all year long can be a drain on your mental outlook. It can even contribute to the 31 percent increase in anxiety and depression since the pandemic began. In these unreliable times, it is helpful to find things we can count on and that will be certain to boost our outlook.

Taking care of your physical health is the perfect way to feel like you’re back in the driver's seat— and quickly. People who exercise regularly tend to do so because it gives them an enormous sense of well-being. They feel more energetic throughout the day, sleep better at night, have sharper memories, and feel more relaxed and positive about themselves and their lives. And it’s also a powerful medicine for many common mental health challenges. As one example, a recent study done by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that running for 15 minutes a day or walking for an hour reduces the risk of major depression by 26 percent. Increasing your activity will promote many positive changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and promote feelings of calm and well-being.
depression. Increasing your activity through various kinds of exercise (even gentle exercise and walking) is a natural and powerful anti-anxiety treatment. It relieves tension and stress, boosts physical and mental energy, and enhances well-being through the release of endorphins. Endorphins are amazing brain chemicals that not only reduce the perception of pain but create a positive and energizing outlook on life. Mindfulness matters. While exercising, try to take notice of the sensation of your feet hitting the ground, for example, or the rhythm of your breathing, or the feeling of the wind on your skin. By adding this mindfulness element—really focusing on your body and how it feels as you exercise—you’ll not only improve your physical condition faster, but you may also be able to interrupt the flow of constant worries running through your head. Thirty minutes of exercise of moderate intensity, such as brisk walking three days a week, is sufficient for these health benefits. Moreover, these 30 minutes need not to be continuous; three 10-minute walks are believed to be as equally useful as one 30-minute walk.
It also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits and make you feel good.
Action step: Make a commitment to schedule in your 30-minute “brain booster” sessions into your calendar starting this week. Bonus points if you are able to get your activity outside, as studies have shown that exercising outside lowers blood pressure and stress, and brings us an added sense of calm.
Finally, exercise can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed

ARE NATUROPATHS
PHYSICIANS? SORTING THROUGH THE CONFUSION SURROUNDING NATUROPATHIC DOCTORS BY SCOTT PORTER, SANDPOINT SUPER DRUG
A
s a pharmacist, I work with doctors every day supporting patients. I understand well a physician's role in the health of our community. Yet, I am not always clear about naturopaths here in Idaho.
A quick search in Sandpoint reveals the source of mystery. You will see such terms as “naturopathic clinic,” “naturopath,” “ND,” “certified traditional naturopath,” “TND,” "NMD" and “naturopathic practitioner.” While these seem to imply a doctoral level of education and certification from a medical board, this is far from reality. The only designation in Idaho that represents official licensure is “naturopathic medical doctor” or “NMD.” The rest have no formal standards and are commonly used by “lay” naturopaths. Medical doctors are primary care physicians who have met established requirements to practice medicine. They have graduated from an accredited academic program and take an approved test that confirms their knowledge. The Idaho Board of Medicine serves by regulating licenses for medical physicians (MD), osteopathic physicians (DO), physician assistants (PA) and naturopathic physicians (NMD). Chiropractors (DC) are licensed by the Idaho Board of Chiropractic Physicians and dentists by the Board of Dentistry (DDS). Nurse practitioners (NP) are certified by the Idaho Board of Nursing. The State Board of Acupuncture regulates acupuncturists and oriental medicine (LAc). A Naturopathic Medical Board was established last year to regulate licensed naturopaths. In 2005 there was a Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Act, but that became confusing and conflictual, and was repealed in 2015. Nationally, licensed naturopaths are certified to have 4,100 hours of inperson education, 1,200 hours of supervised hands-on clinical training, graduated from a U.S. Department of Education accredited doctoral program, and passed all four of the naturopathic licensing exams. These individuals are considered physicians in Idaho and can legally practice primary care and prescribe medications. They are trained to diagnose and treat both acute and chronic illness. They officially have been granted exclusive use of the term “NMD” or “naturopathic medical doctor.” All the other terms surrounding naturopaths remain unregulated in Idaho, even if regulated in other states. For example, an “ND,” or naturopathic doctor, is regulated in Washington, Oregon and Montana. In those states you know someone is a licensed physician when they call themselves an ND or naturopath. But here in Idaho, anyone, regardless of training, can call themselves an ND, naturopath, or say they have a naturopathic clinic. The new law allowed for continued use of those terms since they had been historically supported. This calls for caution as education and background vary widely. NMD licensure is a great indicator when searching for a naturopathic physician who has met the state requirements and national educational standards. Another good place to look is by asking about education and training. There are seven accredited naturopathic universities in North America— Bastyr, NUNM, National University, Boucher, CCNM, SCNM, and NUHS. These are medical schools that offer exceptional and rigorous education. They all include clinical training. Once you know how to sort through all these terms, you should be able to more easily find a qualified naturopathic practitioner who is well-trained and knowledgeable to meet your needs. Scott Porter, a functional medicine pharmacist, is the director of the Center for Functional Medicine & Nutrition at Sandpoint Super Drug.

INTRODUCING
SPACEX
MAJOR MILESTONES REACHED, SUPPORTED BY THE EXPERTISE OF NORTH IDAHO NATIVE BY TAYLOR SHILLAM
S
pace Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX, began with a billionaire’s dream of transporting humans to Mars.
Founded in the early 2000s by investor and business guru Elon Musk, the forward-thinking company has been behind a number of revolutionary firsts and major milestones in its first two decades as a company. According to CNET, Musk’s venture into the realm of space was rooted in the intention to buy a rocket as a publicity stunt to reignite the world’s excitement for space. The vision that began with a plan to purchase a Russian rocket turned into finding a way to build his own, with Musk’s creation of SpaceX. SpaceX is the only private company that has returned a spacecraft from low-Earth orbit—and its achievements don’t stop there. The company’s big victories began in 2008, when it became the first privately funded group to put a payload in Earth’s orbit. Its Falcon 1 rocket orbited Earth for the first time on September 28 of that year, paving the way for Falcon 9, it’s nine-engine version of the original Falcon. The first orbital class rocket capable of preflight, the Falcon 9 is a reusable, two-stage rocket designed and manufactured for the reliable and safe transport of payloads (meaning people, satellites or cargo, typically measured in terms of weight) into Earth’s orbit and beyond.
66 66
|SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL
The two-stage Falcon 9 rocket is unique in its ability to transport its carrying load into orbit, then have its first stage return to Earth. Traditionally, a rocket’s stages are due to the high amount of fuel required to launch a rocket; once the first stage has emptied its fuel, it detaches and returns to Earth, allowing the second stage to continue on without the excess weight. An orbital rocket that has been used to launch satellites for a number of purposes and resupply the International Space Station, the Falcon 9 has now flown over 80 missions. Weighing over 1.2 million pounds, the Falcon 9 is nearly 230 feet tall and 12 feet in diameter. According to SpaceX, the rocket’s nine engines are gradually throttled near the end of first-stage flight, to limit acceleration as the rocket’s mass decreases with the burning of fuel. The engines are also used to decelerate the vehicle at landing time. The rocket has four landing legs, made from state-of-the-art fiber placed symmetrically around the base of the rocket to deploy just before landing. The Falcon 9’s successful upright landing and recovery in December 2015 was a major win for SpaceX, as that first safe and successful landing paved the way for the creation of the final version of Falcon 9: the Block 5 Falcon 9 rocket, designed to be refurbished for reuse of up to 100 times. According to Time, reusable, recoverable rocket stages that can touch down on dry land have been a topic of discussion for decades, with

the goal to reduce costs and bring speed to turnaround time, but SpaceX was the first to successfully make the concept a reality. SpaceX’s rockets are streamlined in terms of engine design and production; helping to reduce costs and outsourcing, as a majority of the company’s parts are produced on its own factory floor. Why the focus on reusability? It’s what allows SpaceX to supply the most expensive parts of the rocket, in turn driving down the cost of space access and potentially breaking barriers to taking space travel further than it’s ever been. The majority of rockets are designed to burn up on reentry, but SpaceX rockets can withstand reentry, to successfully return to Earth with the ability to fly again. Most of the cost from launching a rocket comes from building it; and historically, most rockets have only flown one time. SpaceX believes that a fully, rapidly reusable rocket is the required “pivotal breakthrough” to substantially reduce the cost of space access. According to SpaceX, a commercial airplane costs about the same to build as the Falcon 9 rocket, but will typically fly multiple times per day and conduct tens of thousands of flights over its lifetime. By their logic, if following the commercial model, a rapidly reusable space launch vehicle could significantly reduce the cost of traveling to space. Making any margin of progress in the realm of rocketry is significant, and SpaceX is in the business of redefining successful space transport. In May of 2020, the company’s Crew Dragon capsule, perched atop the Falcon 9 rocket, transported NASA astronauts to space. Launching from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, it was SpaceX’s first ever human-spaceflight launch. The May 30, 2020 mission also marked the first U.S. rocket launch with a crew of astronauts since 2011, when the shuttle era came to an end. Many of SpaceX’s earlier milestones led up to last year’s successful launch.
With 108 total launches, 71 landings and 50 reflow rockets, SpaceX continues to move forward and innovate, operating with their chief mission in mind: making humanity multi68

In 2008, the Falcon 1 became the first privately developed fuel rocket to reach the Earth’s orbit. In 2012, the Dragon spacecraft became the first commercial spacecraft to deliver cargo to and from the International Space Station. Then in 2015, the Falcon 9 rocket achieved the first-ever orbital class rocket landing, delivering 11 communication satellites to orbit. It’s easy for successes within the realm of space transport and rocketry to feel like tales from another planet. However, a connection to the works of SpaceX can be found closer to home in North Idaho native Jacob Katz, a senior guidance and navigation control engineer for the company. Katz has been involved in many of SpaceX’s innovative projects, including the Falcon 9 rocket. He will often see missions through from start to finish, figuring out the possibility of a proposed mission, designing a vehicle’s trajectory, programming its software and controlling its launch. The 2003 Bonners Ferry High School graduate has helped make possible the launch of several successful missions on behalf of SpaceX. Katz graduated from MIT, having studied aeronautics and astronautics before joining the company. Katz brought to SpaceX a unique background in both software development and engineering. After a string of unique internship opportunities including one with Jeff Bezos’ Seattle-based company Blue Origin, and successfully launching an international Robotics league with his father as a PhD student, Katz quickly became well-rounded in his field. The Falcon 9 missions and milestones have garnered a lot of media attention through the years, and Katz’s expertise has supported him in being involved in the navigation, trajectory and completion of several milestone flights. Young aspiring scientists can find inspiration in Katz’s success, a testament to the heights one can reach with a passion for their craft and a dedication to continue learning. Katz was raised by teachers—his parents Ed and Jill Katz—and always wanted to learn more about the mechanics of how things work. Recalling an impressive simulation of a space shuttle crew mission in his fifth grade class, he remains thankful for the teachers who invested their time in opening his eyes up to the world. “It’s so valuable to support the school system,” Katz said, emphasizing his gratitude for the opportunities he was provided by great educators he encountered along the way to SpaceX—his father included. Katz contributed to the two astronauts successfully landing with the first flight of the Crew Dragon in May, and a second trip completed with four astronauts in November 2020. With 108 total launches, 71 landings and 50 reflow rockets, SpaceX continues to move forward and 70

from Mars to the sun being about 1.5 times the distance between the Earth and sun.
Musk, who has famously co-founded the major companies PayPal, Tesla Motors, and solar energy company Solar City, had no formal training in rocketry but has unsurprisingly found success with his creation of SpaceX, which holds its own among established companies like Boeing.
SpaceX plans to create a reusable transportation system capable of an orbit refueling and leveraging Mars’ natural H20 and C02 resources to refuel on the surface of Mars. The company states they are working on the next generation of fully reusable launch vehicles that will be the most powerful ever built, capable of carrying humans to the red planet and other space bound destinations.
Musk was the winner of this year’s Axel Springer Award, given by the media and tech company to innovative personalities who generate change and influence culture. The award recognizes achievement and encourages continued progress. The award-winning founder has a big vision for the company, having shared at the awards broadcast that he believes SpaceX can start sending humans to Mars by 2026, at the latest. Musk has discussed setting his sights on Mars on several occasions, with many eager to find out if his estimated frame is realistic. At a distance of about 140 million miles away, Mars is one of Earth’s closest neighbors. “It’s a little cold, but we can warm it up,” SpaceX states on their website, describing the distance 72

When innovative minds and revolutionary, forward-thinking technology are combined, there is truly no telling what distances can be reached.
Today, the Starship, a combination of their Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket, represents a “fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond,” SpaceX described, noting the vehicle’s ability to carry over 100 metric tons to Earth orbit. Starship 8 successfully launched and landed on December 8, 2020, showing promise for the model’s future endeavors. To see SpaceX vehicles in action, visit SpaceX. com or the company’s YouTube channel for videos of each Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy flights. Each launch is broadcast live online, with the launch schedule continuously updated on the Twitter feeds of both SpaceX and Musk. When innovative minds and revolutionary, forward-thinking technology are combined, there is truly no telling what distances can be reached. “It’s about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past,” Musk has said to describe his vision. “And I can’t think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars.”

Yourself ST R AT E G IES FOR S ELF -LOV E by TAYLOR SHILLAM
F
ebruary, the month so often associated with love, is the perfect time to direct some of that love back to yourself.
It’s often easier to give love away than to receive love, let alone provide it for ourselves. Self-love can sound like a cliché term or an unnecessary notion, but in reality, it’s an essential component of living well. The more we give and the busier we get, the more critical it becomes to prioritize time to refill our own cup.
76
In addition to positive thoughts, take regular inventory of your mental and physical well-being. Take note if you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, tired or in a rut—all signs to slow down, recharge and reevaluate. Pay just as much attention when you feel uplifted, recharged and positive, so you can spend more time on what ignites those feelings in you.
While you’re connecting with loved ones this month, remember to keep a strong connection to yourself. A bit of daily self-love can go a long way—below are a few simple ways to incorporate self-love this month and beyond.
Treat your body like the valuable vessel it is. Part of loving yourself is celebrating all the incredible things your body does for you each day. Prioritizing care for the most valuable vessel you’ll ever have is a critical component of self-love.
Listen to yourself. Self-love starts with the way you speak to yourself. If your inward thoughts don’t mirror the supportive, constructive way you would speak to someone you care about, it’s time to shift your perspective.
Keep mood-boosting endorphins flowing by identifying the forms of movement that make you feel good and doing them on a regular basis. Your muscles, joints and happy hormones will thank you for the regular breath of fresh air.
Changing the tone of your inner dialogue to be kinder and more uplifting can quickly help you feel more loved and inspired. Thoughts are powerful foundations that shape your outlook. Be intentional in building a healthy foundation for yourself.
Daily consumption of the whole foods that energize and fuel you, while including the foods you love and crave, encourages a balanced, sustainable approach to fueling your body.

When you eat well and move often in a healthy balance, it doesn’t take long to start glowing from the inside out. Nourish healthy relationships. Pay attention to the people who make you feel more loved, more appreciated and more like yourself. Healthy relationships can boost your selflove, simply through the love you receive from those key people in your life. Whether that circle is large or small, quality is what matters most. On the flip side, identify the relationships that don’t serve you. Take the time to identify toxic relationships that could be in your life— relationships that feel one-sided, bring more negative qualities than positive, or that you’ve simply outgrown. Prioritizing yourself can mean re-prioritizing who you spend your time and energy on by setting healthy boundaries or stepping away from the relationships that keep you from your best, happiest self. Leave your comfort zone. Fill yourself with confidence and cultivate a healthy level of self-trust by taking a step outside your

comfort zone. Give yourself the opportunity to get spontaneous, try something new, and let go—you can learn a lot about yourself when you let yourself get uncomfortable. An opportunity to be vulnerable can be scary but will give you the opportunity to grow and the powerful knowledge that you can make it to the other side of an uncomfortable situation. The first step doesn’t have to be big. It can be as small as taking yourself to dinner or exploring a new place. Other highly doable options include taking up a new hobby, attending an event on your own, starting a conversation with a stranger or sharing your feelings with someone. Get creative—and get closer to yourself in the process. Get to know yourself. Never stop learning about yourself. Every step you take toward identifying your goals, your values, what you love in life and what you want from it takes you closer to your happiest, most loved self. Spend time with yourself, whether it’s a few minutes of daily journaling or meditation, or taking a solo adventure. The more you show up for yourself and learn about yourself, the more you’ll have to love.
Identify what you’re good at—and do more of it. Doesn’t it feel great to be a master at something? Ignite your self-esteem by using your talents, whether it’s making a recipe you’ve perfected, playing a sport you love or exercising your creativity. Playing to your talents can quickly boost your mood and bring you back to more of what you love about yourself. Celebrate yourself. Life has inevitable ups and downs that shape who we are. Self-love includes loving every part of yourself—your flaws, mistakes and times of challenge—and accepting them as opportunities for growth and strength. So, celebrate who you are: your wins, your losses, the experiences you’re proud of and the lessons you’ve learned. Every piece of your path matters, and it’s important to recognize how far you’ve come. As you enjoy February’s focus on love, remember to give some back to yourself. Love takes many forms, but one you always keep with you should cultivate your most important relationship: the relationship you have with yourself.

It’s that time of year, mid-winter, when we tend to find it harder to get outside and partake in the many offerings our area has to offer. If you’re looking for an adventure to please your palate, then a stop at one—or more!—of North Idaho’s area wineries and tasting rooms might just be the answer. Join us on a tasting journey for a sampling of some must-visit stops.

PEND D’OREILLE WINERY Located in the heart of downtown Sandpoint in the historic century-old and beautifully restored Belwood Building at 301 Cedar Street, Pend d’Oreille Winery is a North Idaho favorite! Celebrating more than two decades of vintning excellence, wine tastings are offered daily, providing guests five 1-ounce pours (pre-selected wines of the vintner's choice) or a flight of three 3-ounce pours (a customizable tasting where you select three wines you would like to try). As the tasting menu changes monthly, be sure to view their current tasting menu on their website, POWine.com.
3
Pend d'Oreille is also well-known for their refillable growlers. Fill yours up with their house wines or a wine from their rotating tap selection. Stop by on Friday or Saturday evening, where live musical performances accompany the award-winning wines.
HEART ROCK WINES Opened in 2015 in Bonners Ferry, Heart Rock Wines is the place to go for those local and visiting wine lovers. A visit to their tasting room, which can be found in the Bonnerport Building at 6371 Kootenai Street, will leave you wanting more, as they feature some of the finest wines from Idaho, Washington and Oregon, as well as Californian, French, Italian, Spanish and Argentinian varietals and blends. Less is more at Heart Rock wines, where they value quality over quantity.
4
Throughout the year they offer wine and food pairing events, as well as live music. Be sure to visit their website, HeartRockWines.com, or their Facebook page for current tasting room hours.
CAMAS PRAIRIE WINERY
5
The tiny logging town of Bovill, Idaho, in Latah County, is home to North Idaho's oldest winery. Established in 1983, Camas Prairie is a small boutique winery that produces approximately 2,000 cases a year. Though they produce all varieties of wines, there is a clear focus on Meads—using the lightest local honeys for "a crisp, light and casual flavor." You can discover more about Camas Prairie Winery online at CamasParirieWinery.com, or by stopping in their tasting room, which is located at 207 Main Street.

PARK CITY, UTAH A flight in the morning and hitting the slopes by afternoon By Marguerite Cleveland
P
ark City, Utah, is one of the best destinations in the United States to ski—especially if you need to fly here. You can fly to Salt Lake City’s brand-new airport, which opened in September 2020. Its oversize baggage claim utilizes state-of-the-art technology to deliver ski bags vertically, eliminating the wait for oversize baggage. Accessing your rental car is a breeze with an entrance to the parking garage near the baggage claim. Arrive in the morning, and after a short 35-minute drive to Park City, you can hit the slopes the same day.
Park City really does live up to its reputation as a premier winter vacation destination. Alaska Airlines offers nonstop flights from Seattle and one-stop flights from Spokane. You can snag some great rates with their promotions. Usually, hotels and resorts are fully booked six months out, but due to the pandemic you can still find availability and some great rates. When you exit Interstate 80 on your way into Park City, stop at the Kimball Junction Center, the main visitor center for Park City. It’s a great spot to get recommendations for your visit as well as exclusive offers. They even have coffee. Also in Kimball Junction is an outlet mall and shopping. Where to Stay Park City offers a variety of lodging types in all price points. The Sheraton Park City offers a centrally located property and is a good fit for families. The complimentary shuttle does ski runs during the day to Park City Mountain, and in the evening runs to Main Street for dining and

What to Do
Historic Main Street is the place to be for dining and shopping. It is located on a hill, so wear shoes or boots with a good tread, as it can be slippery in the ice and snow. Make sure to allow time to visit the Park City Museum. This museum covers the early mining and skiing history, as well as the Sundance Festival. Great imaginative interactive exhibits bring that history to life. Sit on a train bench and watch historic videos from the “windows.” Experience being a miner and set off TNT for a simulated explosion. This is not a large museum, but all the space is well used. Adults and children alike will enjoy it.
People from all over the world flock to Park City for its famed dry powder snow, so it is no surprise the premier winter activity is skiing at two renowned ski resorts. Park City Mountain is the largest in the United States at over 7,300 acres. Deer Valley provides a luxury experience to their day guests. The pricey lift tickets include free parking and complimentary ski storage, and they limit the number of skiers on the mountain so there are no big crowds. Spread out over six mountains, this is the place to go for uncrowded slopes. Both properties have procedures in place for COVID-19, and you will be required to wear a mask on the
Utah Olympic Park is just a short drive from downtown Park City and is worth a visit. The main building houses two museums: the Alf Engen Ski Museum and the Eccles Salt Lake 2002 Winter Games Museum. Admission is free to both. Olympians from all over the world train and compete here, so you may have an opportunity to see a competition. The museums have some fun simulators. One lets you try your skill at ski jumping. There is also a Winter Bobsled Experience where you hurtle down the Salt Lake 2020 Olympic Winter Games Sliding Track with a professional pilot at the helm.
For a truly luxury stay, head to the Deer Valley Resort to stay at the Stein Eriksen Lodge. The authentic European lodge welcomes you from the moment you arrive with warm, crackling fireplaces and touches of Olympian Stein Eriksen’s Norwegian heritage. With opulent dining, great ski-in/ski-out access and a high-end spa, the lodge truly earns its Forbes Five-Star hotel and spa rating.

Where to Eat Dining in Park City is a treat, and there is such a variety at all price points. The Eating Establishment is located on Main Street and is a must for breakfast, which you can order all day. They have an interesting take on traditional egg dishes. Try the loaded baked potato omelet—it tastes as good as it sounds. For a true splurge, head up to the Stein Eriksen Lodge for their Alpenglobe experience. It is like being inside a snow globe. The clear domes sit on the deck of the Mountain Lodge and are climate controlled with a panoramic view of Deer Valley. Absolutely stunning. For a less expensive option, come up and enjoy breakfast at Glitretind. The Norwegian Potato and Bacon Pancake topped with poached eggs, Jarlsberg cheese sauce and cranberries is a unique memorable dish that makes it worth the drive to Deer Valley. Chimayo is located on Main Street and is such a special place. The service is impeccable, and the Southwestern décor and Mexican tile floor add a cozy feel. The freshly baked bread is served with a house-made cilantro bread oil that elevates this humble starter. At least one person at your table needs to order the Crown Roast of Barbecue Spareribs. It is one of those dishes that arrives, and everyone exclaims at the presentation. Caramelized chipotle-glazed spareribs are rolled to give the appearance of a crown pork roast and filled with mashed potatoes on a bed of hominy salpicon. Truly divine. The Silver Star Café is in the Silver Star Village. You’ll want to make dinner reservations, as it is very popular—especially with the locals. The owners focus on their “four legs of our table”: great food, ambiance, service and music (COVID-19 dependent). A must-try dish is the Pork Osso Bucco, which was featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. This meal has a lot going on with coconut creamed corn, nestled around 96

a locally sourced pork shank, and topped with fresh tomatillo salsa, cotija cheese, cilantro and pork jus. Two health notes: Park City has COVID-19 policies in effect to ensure your safety. Most restaurants are open for indoor dining with limited capacity. Shops and attractions are open as well. You must wear a mask for most activities and maintain social distancing of 6 feet. With an elevation range between 7,000 and 10,000 feet above sea level, you may experience some altitude sickness for the first 48 hours if you come from lower levels. Some symptoms include fatigue, headaches and nausea. The key is to drink lots of water, take it easy and avoid alcohol your first day or two.

SHEPHERD’S PIE Recipe Courtesy of Tina VanDenHeuvel You can follow Tina @madebetterforyou on Instagram INGREDIENTS: 1 tbsp. avocado oil 2 tbsp. butter 2 lbs. ground beef 1 large onion 2 carrots, diced 3 celery stalks, diced 1 cup frozen peas 2 sprigs each rosemary and thyme 2 bay leaves 1 tbsp. tapioca starch 1 cup red wine 1 1/2 cups beef stock 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp. tomato paste For the topping: 1 large cauliflower 1/4 cup butter 1 tbsp. heavy cream 1/2 cup parmesan, shredded METHOD: • Heat 1 tablespoon avocado oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a large cast-iron pot set over medium heat. Add the beef and cook until brown. When done, remove the beef into a bowl from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. • Add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the pan and add onions, carrots, celery and peas. Season with salt and sauté vegetables until tender—about 10 minutes. Add the rosemary, thyme and tapioca starch and wine. Cook until wine has reduced to half. Add beef stock, Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste. Cook until sauce has reduced and thickened—about 20 minutes. Add in beef and simmer for 10 minutes. Pour into an oven-safe dish to cool. • In a large pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the cauliflower and cover with a lid to allow cauliflower to steam. Cauliflower is done when pierced with a fork and cauliflower is soft—about 15 minutes. • Remove cauliflower from the pot into a high-powered blender. Add butter cream and parmesan and blend until smooth. • Top meat with cauliflower and bake in a 350˚F preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

For $15, you’ll receive a unique diner-style mug (limited availability) you can take home, along with two 5-ounce pours. Additional 5- and 12-ounce pours will be available for purchase. To learn more, visit 219.bar or @219Lounge on Facebook, and mark your calendars for a seasonal favorite!
