IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE we are welcoming in 2016. It does not seem that long ago when people were stocking their shelves, fearful of what the year 2000 would bring. Here we are 16 years later, and while a lot has changed much has remained the same. One thing that never seems to change is the traditional New Year’s resolution. The statistics of those who actually stick with theirs is astounding – only 8 percent. So why not make a goal this year to do something attainable and fun. There are countless civic organizations in our community. Why not plan to attend one each month? It is a great way to connect with others in town and find out about local events. Like most communities, ours too is full of nonprofits who are in need of help. Volunteering can not only be fun but has many intrinsic rewards itself.

If you are someone who likes adventure, make a resolution to visit five new places this year. They can be a day trip away or a fun weekend getaway. It does not have to be expensive and can add some excitement to life.

Relationship Upgrades TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR THE NEW YEAR
BY JOY PETERSON, M.A. LICENSED MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST. AUTHOR OF “22 MYTHS OF DIVORCE” AND “DISCOVERING A DYNAMIC MARRIAGE” DISCOVERINGDYNAMICMARRIAGE.COM
WELCOME TO 2016! It’s a brand sparkling new year full of promise and possibility. Everyone makes resolutions, and they fully expect to run out of steam within a few weeks. I challenge you to do something different. Upgrade your relationships. Marriage, children, relatives, friends and colleagues. Technology forces you to upgrade regularly. It’s inconvenient and awkward during the learning period. Change is not comfortable. Neither is childbirth. But we get through it and the rewards are worthwhile. Investing in relationship upgrades holds the most promise and pay-off. When relationships are satisfying and solid, life is good! When relationships are strident and sour, life sucks! The formula for effective relationships is not a mystery, the wisdom is as old as time. It is called The Golden Rule: “treat one another with the same love and respect you want to receive.” Here is a simple, practical way to accomplish that goal – relate to others with curiosity and intention to appreciate and understand. There are a few rules and guidelines to help ensure a successful and transformative relationship upgrade in the new year: • When it comes to relationships, kindness and fairness are minimum standards! • Growing and enriching a relationship and the people in the relationship is the primary goal of any interaction. • A loved one’s needs, feelings, opinions and happiness are as important as your own. • Nobody wins unless everybody wins, and never at the expense of another. • Never blame or judge; always give everyone
SandpointLivingLocal.com
16
the benefit of the doubt. • Seek first to understand and second to be understood. • Integrity is telling your truth in this moment, relevant to this discussion, not recounting errors and omissions of the past, your own or another’s. • Fear and ego are the enemies of love and true intimacy; they are selfish and closedminded. • When you are sure you are right or need to be – you are probably wrong. • Every problem offers myriad possibilities; the real issue is limiting beliefs, feelings and attitudes. • Miracles can be a slight shift in perspective – understanding from another’s point of view. Consider thoughtfully, with intentional openness to discovery to one another and to an issue. Discover what works and what you want to keep and create more of in your relationship. What doesn’t work falls away with lack of mutual support. Don’t rehash old grievances or disagreements. Issues that keep recurring without resolution tend to come out of unconscious scripts and beliefs from your childhood. Take a fresh look and consider whether they serve your current objectives. Rewrite and refine your operating rules, and agree on how you will relate on a troubling issue moving forward. Time-out loaded issues and revisit later when you have had space to absorb and reflect. Welcome to a new year, make it the best ever.

In Need of an Update? TIPS FOR MAKING THAT YELLOWED OAK NEW AGAIN BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DECORATOR AT PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER
WHO’S WITH ME WHEN I SAY I am tired of seeing the yellowed oak look from the 90s? I get asked a lot about how to update that look. And typically, if there’s one area of oak in a house, there’s more… trim, doors, cabinetry, flooring, bookshelves, and of course furniture. Oak was used quite often because not only is it a plentiful wood species, it is a solid hardwood, and not as expensive as some other species. Because oak is such a durable wood, even if it’s 20plus years old, it’s probably still in great shape, so you may not need to purge everything. Oak holds up well, so it is a wood species that lasts. What doesn’t last is the polyurethane finish that yellows over time, making it look dated. This yellow tone does not follow current color trends, so when asked about how to get rid of it, I can offer a few suggestions. Instead of replacing everything, you can choose which areas are a priority, commit to what you want to change about it, and develop a plan on how to make it happen. There’s not really a product out there that allows you to cover up that aged yellow tone without also hiding the wood grain. Therefore, you can either paint it or refinish it. If you choose to

18
refinish, it means sanding the old polyurethane off completely, which will still allow the wood grain to show off that solid wood product when you’re done. So, how do you update one area without updating all? If it’s the flooring that you want to change, it may just be in need of refinishing. If you have a narrow plank floor and it’s more than 10 to 15 years old, chances are it is solid wood, not like the engineered pre-finished options now available. This type of flooring can be sanded down and refinished. You’ll need to hire a wood floor company to sand off the old polyurethane, and once they’re down to the raw wood, they can apply a new stain color and re-apply top coat finish. This allows you to get rid of the yellowed look without having to replace the flooring. Cabinets are also a tough thing to update if you don’t have the money to replace them. The doors can be removed, sanded down and stained, but you will also need to do the faceframes, toekick, and finished end panels, which will need to be done in place. Refinishing your cabinets is a process – it takes quite a bit of time and if done correctly can
look nice. However, I have been to customers’ houses that have chosen to refinish floors and then applied their budgeted money towards new cabinets and haven’t been sorry. Trim is another common area where we find lots of oak. Where most people get hung up on painting trim is knowing where to stop. If you start by painting the baseboards, that usually runs into the door trim, which is part of the door jambs, and then you’ll need to paint the window trim to match. Just know when you start this process, it is a commitment and most of the time means your whole house, not just one or two rooms. If you choose to refinish

trim, it’s hard work to sand the old finish off if there’s any kind of decorative profile. The easy part is re-applying stain or clear coat finishing it. Unless you plan on doing this yourself, it may be cheaper to purchase new trim to stain and finish with top coat. The other option is to paint over it. Quite a few people mix and match wood tones with paint. It’s perfectly acceptable to paint the doors and leave the trim wood tone or paint the trim and leave the doors wood tone. There are a lot of remodeled homes that have both paint and stain. And actually, there are quite a few new homes as well being built with both paint and stain trim/door/cabinet combinations. Using both paint and wood tones provides flexibility for future changes. Finding that good balance of color can be accomplished without sacrificing what you have and being smart about the commitment you’re undertaking.

Financial Focus INVESTING IS A MARATHON – NOT A SPRINT THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, KEN WOOD INVESTORS SOMETIMES MAY get frustrated with their investments because those investments don’t seem to produce quick results. Perhaps that’s understandable in our fast-paced society, in which we’ve grown accustomed to instant gratification. But investing is, by nature, a long-term activity. If you look at it in terms of an athletic event, it’s not a sprint in which you must pull out all the stops to quickly get where you’re going. Instead, it’s more like the 26.2-mile race known as a marathon. And as an investor, you can learn a few things from marathoners, such as: Preparation — No one gets up one day and is ready to run a marathon. Marathon runners train for months, and even years. As an investor, you, too, need to prepare yourself for the “long run.” How? By learning as much as you can about different asset classes, types of risk and all the other factors associated with investing. Patience — Marathoners know they have a long haul in front of them, so they typically create a “game plan” — one that takes into account such factors as their physical condition, the weather on race day and the characteristics of the course, such as whether it’s hilly or flat. Investors should also create a strategy — one that encompasses their goals and ways of working toward them — and stick to this strategy. Perseverance — Marathoners may deal with injuries, dehydration and other setbacks, either while training or during the actual race. But as long as they’re able to keep going,
SandpointLivingLocal.com
20
they do so. As an investor, you too will face obstacles, such as market downturns. But as long as you continue investing and don’t head to the “sidelines,” you have a good chance of making progress toward your goals. Vision — Marathoners study the course they’re on, so they know what’s ahead — and where they’re going. As an investor, you also need a vision of what lies in front of you — the number of years until your retirement, the type of retirement lifestyle you anticipate, what sort of legacy you plan to leave, and so on. Your vision will help drive your investment decisions. Proper coaching — Not all marathoners have individual coaches, but many have at least gone to clinics or joined running clubs so they could learn more about the various aspects of this grueling event. As an investor, you can certainly benefit from guidance or “coaching” in the form of a financial professional — someone who knows your individual needs, goals and risk tolerance, and who has the experience to make recommendations that are appropriate for your situation. Every marathoner is familiar with the difficulties of the challenge and the satisfaction of finishing the race. As an investor, you also will be tested many times. Furthermore, you’ll never really cross the “finish line” because you’ll always have goals toward which you’ll be working. Yet, by emulating the traits of successful marathoners, you can continue working toward your objectives — and perhaps you’ll avoid the blisters, too.

INSURANCE. WE MAY complain when those premiums become due, but when we suffer a loss or damage, we are thankful we have it. There are many losses that we fear will leave us facing a financial catastrophe – motor vehicle accidents, house fires, loss of life, a catastrophic illness and more. The good news is all those things can be insured against. But there other things in life we fear and for which we cannot purchase insurance. And let’s face it, if we could we would. You know what I’m talking about. Those instances that fall under the “life happens” category. Here are just a few of those life fears: • Your children leaving home. Or, worse yet, your children never leaving home! • Mornings without coffee (think about how many coffee shops are in a onesquare mile radius. It’s astounding!) • Three-day weekends with the in-laws • Bad hair days, or … • No hair years (you know who you are!) • The return of the fashion trends of the 1980’s (see bad hair days above!) • Being recognized as “that person from the Internet.” How many times have we parents said… “It’s a good thing they didn’t have Facebook when I was in college!” • Not realizing your cell phone is on speaker phone • Not realizing you never hit “end” after your cell phone call • Ruined friendships (see above – not hitting “end” after cell phone call) • Things that are unrestrained – whether it is emotions, aggressive dogs or baggy pants • Those “deals” that seem too good to be true • “Free” stuff • Bad Christmas gifts…
especially when a gift receipt is not enclosed! • Living in a world without chocolate • Snow shovels in September • Unsolicited advice (see three-day weekends with the in-laws!) Let’s admit it, if we could insure against much of those above we certainly would! And I’m sure you could add to the list as well. All kidding aside, now that the new year is upon us, one thing you seriously should consider is a meeting with your insurance agent. Make sure you are adequately protected against those unforeseen circumstances – the ones for which you really can purchase coverage.
Make it your New Year's resolution to perform a review of your coverages! You may even save some money!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
2016
And if by chance you do suffer from one of the above-mentioned circumstances, you may just find your health insurance has a clause that will cover your much needed therapy! Make it your resolution to review your coverage!

Recognize the Symptoms EAR INFECTIONS ARE A COMMON AILMENT FOR OUR FURRY FRIENDS BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL, SANDPOINT, IDAHO ONE OF THE MOST COMMON reasons for a pet visit, besides the very important yearly examination, involves the ears of our furry friends. In both dogs and cats, ear infections often go undetected by owners but can be a major source of discomfort, pain and underlying disease.
Obvious signs of an ear infection include red skin on one or both sides of the ear, black or cream colored discharge, and very unpleasant “dirty sock” smell (oolala!). The pet will often flap, shake or paw at its problem ear(s) in a way that indicates discomfort. Sometimes, however, less detectable signs such as thickening of the ear pinna or a subtle head tilt may occur. When seeing any of the above, a veterinary visit becomes a critical step: only the scope knows for sure! The ophthalmoscope tells the real story of the ear canal and the eardrum.
In cats, ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are often the culprit and create quite an itchy, infected and sometimes painful situation. Although dogs are susceptible to mites, their infections usually result from yeast or bacterial organisms and are almost always secondary to abrasions, moisture and allergies. Some breeds have poor ear designs and are not set up for good auditory health. Consider the Standard Poodle with its hairy, narrow, and long ear canals, or the Basset Hound with its long and heavy pinnae (flaps). Golden and Labrador Retrievers don’t really help the situation with their “swimming” habits. Sometimes just bathing any furry breed can spark an ear infection! Allergies create underlying problems with the skin that affect ears tremendously and may be a source of recurring issues.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
Treatment goals exist to take care of the immediate problem and to determine any possible underlying causes. First, one must relieve the intense pain by dampening inflammation of the pinnae and canals. This often involves topical and/or oral medication. The second step is to kill the offending organism whether it is mite, bacteria or yeast. Medications work best when the ear is clean; debris, wax and crusts interfere with most topical medicine. It is not uncommon for a veterinarian to suggest an intensive flushing, suction and cleaning. Anti-pain and anxiety injections
22
are often essential to get the job done because sometimes the ears can be full of cement-like wax and exudate from the infection. Rarely do ear infections strike only once, but if they do consider yourself lucky. Allergies tend to be responsible for over 80 percent of these painful conditions in dogs. Should this be the case, pet owners may need to consult with a doctor to formulate a long-term plan of management. This is never a quick fix but can be controlled with a combination of medications and lifestyle changes – perhaps including specialty foods.
Sometimes just bathing any furry breed can spark an ear infection!
The Google era in which most humans live allows pet owners to become knowledgeable and effective when it comes to basic pet care. However, over-the-counter cleaners and mite killers are not only ineffective, some can actually make the ear more inflamed! Consulting the family veterinary doctor is usually less painful, more efficient and most effective for suspected ear problems.

Giving Hearts THE LIPPI FAMILY EXEMPLIFIES THE MEANING OF COMMUNITY
BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTOS COURTESY KATIE LIPPI-HIGGINS
THEY ARE THE TRUE definition of community. Having touched the lives of countless people in Sandpoint and beyond, Jim and Pam Lippi and their children are an inspiration. The Lippis have owned and operated Ivano’s Ristorante for nearly 32 years, their daughters Jessica and Katie grew up in the restaurant industry. They also own La Rosa in downtown Sandpoint and operate Ivano’s del Lago in Hope during the summer months. Whether it has been donating food to an organization or family in need or catering the celebrations of many, the Lippi family plays an important part in the memories of many in

this community. And they do so with a joyous heart. “The Lippi family are pillars of the Sandpoint community. They are generous of spirit and are always ready to lend a helping hand, no matter what the circumstances,” said Sandpoint resident Susan Johnson who experienced firsthand the kindness of the Lippis at the most difficult time in her life. “When my son passed away, many donations were made to my family from Ivano’s. We were told that when donations were requested, Jim’s response was always, ‘Tell me what you need.’ To me, that is the essence of Jim Lippi’s generosity – ‘Tell me what you need.’”

It is that very kindness that has inspired many. But perhaps what many may not know is the role Jim and Pam have played in many young people’s lives in our community. For many, a job at one of the Lippi restaurants was their first employment experience. And although they may have only worked for the Lippis during their high school or college years, the influence they have had on the younger generation has helped shape the adults the young kids have grown to become. One former employee who is grateful to the Lippi family is former Sandpoint resident Ryan Armbruster. “The world needs more Jim Lippis, not suits or good talkers, just Jim Lippis. That’s it,” said Armbruster of the quiet and humble man he said has made a significant impact on him personally and professionally. When Armbruster was 13 years old, he wanted a new baseball bat. His dad told him he needed to get a job. So he did just that. “That began a relationship that is going on 13 years now,” said Armbruster. Over the years Armbruster was promoted from dishwasher to busboy, pantry cook and eventually a pasta cook. But it was later in their relationship that Armbruster said Jim and his family had the biggest influence on him giving him the gift of a second chance. Like many teenagers, Armbruster developed
some unhealthy habits which led to being fired from Ivano’s. “Jim gave me 60 chances, and I took 61. Being fired by Jim still impacts who I am today,” said Armbruster. While the Lippi family forgave Armbruster years ago, he still said letting them down sticks with him. But the story doesn’t end there. Armbruster struggled through his early 20s and said he eventually figured things out. When he returned to Sandpoint looking for a job, he did not approach Jim Lippi. But when daughter Katie learned that Armbruster was in need of work, she let her dad know. “Jim made it clear that if I was going to come home for summer and work, it would be at Ivano’s. I was part of the family,” said Armbruster. “That summer was the most validating experience of my life. To be able to come back and work for one of the most noble people on the planet, years after I had taken advantage of him, was something I did not take for granted.” Armbruster recalls how he watched Jim wait for hours to bail an employee out of jail when other employers would have fired the person. And how Jim spent countless hours putting on spaghetti feeds so a local sports team or school club could raise funds.

26
“I watched Jim for over ten years hire people that did not benefit his ‘business plan’ but ‘gave people a chance to better themself ’ plan,” said Armbruster. Today Armbruster works in social services, a profession he said he chose in large part due to Jim Lippi. “Jim taught me that if you can help others, you help,” said Armbruster. “And that if you seek credit or praise, you will fizzle out very fast.” These are just a couple of examples of the impact that Jim Lippi and his family have had on our community. To Jim and to the entire family, a heartfelt thank you for being a large part of what makes Sandpoint a great place to live. Perhaps Armbruster summed it up best when he said what so many others feel, “This family has changed me into thinking about others before myself. I owe them a life of gratitude and cannot put my gratitude into words, despite my efforts. They do not want any praise and deserve every bit of praise they receive.”

TO THE RESCUE LIVING IN NORTH IDAHO presents some rather unpredictable challenges, especially when it comes to the weather. With windstorms, power outages, broken pipes, ice dams, mold or fire, the cleanup and repairs can be overwhelming. Fortunately, North Idaho Flood and Fire based in Sagle has a top-notch, educated and certified crew with the expertise to assist in the cleanup, repair and full restoration of your home or business – and they are available at any hour of the day or night. Owned by Sean Gavin, North Idaho Flood and Fire (NIFF) has established a superior reputation when it comes to not only clean up and restoration, but in the building industry as well. As the owner of Mountain View Construction, LLC, Gavin has become one of the premier custom home builders in the area. His experience is a great asset when it comes to restoring and protecting homes and businesses from flood, fire and other disasters. Gavin moved to Sandpoint in 1999 to build his parents’ dream home. He liked the area so much that he decided to stay and has become an integral and influential member of the Sandpoint community. Gavin gives much back to his community as a member of the Panhandle Building Contractors Association, the Rotary Club of Ponderay and the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. For several years he played an instrumental role in putting together the primary fundraiser for Sandpoint’s Community Cancer Services, “A Night to Remember,” a vital organization aiding cancer patients in the battle of their lives. Gavin opened North Idaho Flood and Fire in 2011 and takes pride in providing outstanding, reliable customer service. Combined with years of experience and the highest quality equipment available to perform the highest standard of restoration from flood, fire, wind and mold, Gavin holds masters certification in all fields of restoration. With a crew on-call 24 hours a day, NIFF is ready for whatever may happen in the most unfavorable of times. The crews are educated and certified to provide the best of education. There are many common problems that can arise including mold, fire and sewage in addition to normal water damage. Gavin stresses that it is important to begin the restoration process immediately. For instance, in the case of water damage, it can take a colony of mold as little as one to two days to replicate. And some forms of bacteria can begin to multiply in as little as 20 minutes. Mold can be damaging not only to one’s home, but to one’s health as well. Gavin shares that many homes in North Idaho, especially older homes, have mold issues of which homeowners are not aware. Fire can be devastating in many respects, but NIFF is able to minimize damage and help prevent future health problems that can be a result of long-term exposure. The process begins by using powerful Hepa vacuums that capture all particles of dirt, soot and fire extinguisher residue. The next step is to remove waste products from your home. “Then we begin the restoration and handle

all of your fire and smoke damaged possessions with respect and great care,” said Gavin. “The next step is to effectively remove smoke and fire odors from the home.” Sewage overflow can cause tremendous damage and requires immediate professional attention. “The potential health hazards and contamination that can occur from just one toilet overflow is something that needs to be addressed immediately,” said Gavin. Knowing you have someone to call under any of these circumstances can give assurance that there is indeed the Ghost Buster-like team at North Idaho Flood and Fire ready, willing and able to assist. Being available 24 hours a day, seven days a week means you will not have to wait in the event of an emergency.

SANDPOINT CINEMATOGRAPHER SHARES HIS LIFE STORY
CINEMATOGRAPHERS GIVE US SIGHT. Without them, the film would be a blind soundtrack. What kind of eyes must one have to mentally envision what a director can only describe with words, and then create that vision for movie-goers in a way that draws them into the narrative and immerses them in the story’s emotions? In this case, they are the clear blue eyes of a little boy who still smiles from within, worldclass cinematographer and Sandpoint resident Erik Daarstad. His academy-award winning career in documentary films has enriched the world, given him a life immersed in an art form chosen in his teens, and imparted youthfulness to his mind and heart that only passion faithfully pursued can sustain. He is world-renowned, yet is the quietest man at any table. He is a listener, an observer, sparing with words, and yet a flawlessly eloquent translator and expresser of
themes, stories, chronicles, facts, passions and directorial visions. Arriving at the interview, he sits down, crosses his legs and wordlessly removes an imposingly-thick book from the plastic bag protecting it from the rain. “This is the book,” he says simply. And he hands me his life’s work – 586 pages. Over 300 photographs. And he says nothing else until the questions begin, to which he responds with an exact memory, fond reminiscences and a serene sense of joy. Is there any better way to fall in love with movies than to go see them when one is young? Daarstad went three or four times every week to the one and only movie theater in his hometown on the southwest coast of Norway. An early interest in becoming a pilot faded in light of his interest in films. And then one pivotal day while visiting the capital of Oslo, as he recalls it, “I ran across a crew making a movie.” A freeze-frame of that moment

would show a young man standing very still and watching an intensely-connected team of film-makers working together. “That made up my mind on what I would try to do,” he says simply. Only one so young could have decided so suddenly and fearlessly. One small question remained. “Coming from a small country, the question was, how do I go about it?” The answer manifested when he happened to listen to a radio program featuring another Norwegian who had attended a film school in Los Angeles, and he decided he would do the same. “So I applied and they accepted me and that was it,” he concludes, as though it were unremarkable. Even the golden glow of an Oscar has never warmed the seeds of ego into bloom within Daarstad; he is a humble man. Although his original aim was to do narrativetype films, a USC professor introduced his students to an intriguing assortment of documentaries. And according to Daarstad, “I

thought it would be a very interesting way of making a living. It was the magic of the process, and the fact that it was an opportunity to work with a team of people and tell stories of various kinds. Then it just sort of happened that when I finished college and a few years in the army and started working, those were the opportunities that first presented themselves to me, and I found I really enjoyed documentaries.” Again glossing over the giftedness necessary for the result, he said, “The more you work, the more you gain a reputation and that just kept on going. Documentaries became my life’s work. And I don’t regret that because it’s been a fascinating life. With documentaries,” he elaborates, “you get to be in situations you wouldn’t normally be in and meet people you wouldn’t ordinarily meet and travel to places you otherwise wouldn’t travel to.” The relationships made possible in the creative process remained a strong reason for his love of the profession “You work with a fairly small, compact group of five to six people on the crew,” he explains. “You become like a family, in a way. And you work a lot with the same people from project to project, and you establish a rapport and form relationships. And the same thing happens with the people you’re doing the documentary on. They become like a family, and in the end when you finish, you may part and never see each other again but for that moment in time, it’s special.” Although technically retired, Daarstad is still working. His expertise was recently called into play by Sandpoint Film Festival’s Janice
Jarzabek, whose success with the event resulted in over 400 entries! Daarstad assisted with the screening process. “Most of my contemporaries have retired or gone to that great soundstage in the sky,” he gently jokes, “but producer-director Terry Sanders and I just finished a project that has been entered in several film festivals.” One of Daarstad’s documentaries, entitled, “Men Who Made the Movies” featured an interview with the iconic Frank Capra, who recalled the thrill he felt the first time he looked through the viewfinder. Capra said, “It’s kind of like a magic square and you see magic in that square.” Daarstad knew exactly what he meant. He still does. Finding the magic has been Daarstad’s life. It still is. “Through the Lens of History: The Life Journey of a Cinematographer,” is available at Vanderford Books and the Corner Book Store, and online at KeokeeBooks.com. Take your copy to the Tango restaurant almost any morning to have it signed by the author.

IN FOCUS To Serve and Protect Sandpoint Police Department does much to help the mentally ill B Y PAT T Y H U T C H E N S
IT WAS NEARLY TWO DECADES AGO when we were shocked by the horror of the Columbine attack. For days, our televisions were tuned in to witness lives changed forever. But now, almost 17 years later, it is all too common that we hear of a crisis unfolding that involves shootings. And when we learn more about the person who pulled the trigger, the words “mental illness” are often at the forefront.
Fortunately, there are police officers right here in our community who have gone through extensive crisis intervention training to assist them in learning how to diffuse a situation when someone with mental illness is a threat to themselves or those around them. Sandpoint Police Chief Corey Coon began sending his officers through the Crisis Intervention Training program when he first took over his role in 2013. “Mental health has become more of a priority in recent years,” said Chief Coon of his decision to send as many officers as possible to the training. Eight of the 12 officers who are on patrol have taken the 40-hour training. Others, like Lieutenant Rob Dressel, have taken the 16-hour course. One aspect of the more in-depth 40-hour course involves officers putting on headphones and listening to multiple voices coming at them at once. They are then given a simple task to perform while trying to block out the voices. It gives them a very clear idea of what people with mental illness go through, especially in a crisis situation. “When people hear voices in their head, they (the voices) are very clear,” said Captain Richard Bailey. “(Following the training) we now know to specifically ask them if they are hearing voices,” said Detective Theresa Heberer, who added that they also learned a great deal of information about the medication that is prescribed for those dealing with mental illness. And the officers agree that a large part of the problem in crisis situations involving the mentally ill stems from those who do not take their prescribed medication or do not do so properly. “It is very common that they mix up their medications,” said Heberer.

“Sometimes the side effects from the medication are so bad that they go off the medication,” added Sergeant Dave Giffin. Dressel agreed. “For some, they feel better when on their medications so they think they do not need them and stop taking them. That begins the slow decline into crisis.” Over the course of his career, Dressel has become increasingly aware of the signs of mental illness and feels better equipped to handle the situation after going through the training.
One of the speakers at the training was Ellis Amdur, an author on issues related to mental health and an instructor for crisis intervention training. It was his message that Giffin found most powerful. “He talked about the importance of being an active listener,” said Giffin.
As for Heberer, she valued the opportunity to not only speak with medical providers about mental illness but to sit down and talk to those who actually suffer from mental illness. They shared their stories and helped her see things from their perspective. So what has changed in the way the officers handle a situation with a mentally ill person? “In the past we would fight back, but now we are trained to recognize the signs (of mental illness) and can back off and change our approach,” said Chief Coon. Dressel has been on the force for many years and said that in the beginning of his career if police officers encountered someone with mental health issues who had committed a crime, they went directly to jail. “Our role has definitely changed,” added Captain Richard Bailey. The local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and the Bonner County Sheriff ’s department, which also sends its officers through the classes, sponsors the Crisis

Intervention Training. It is a partnership that Chief Coon values and is grateful for. “NAMI Far North board members frequently hear from individuals with mental illness and their families how helpful CIT officers have been to them in times of crisis,” said Ann Wimberley of the local NAMI chapter. “We are glad that under Chief Coon’s leadership the Sandpoint Police Department has become an active participant in Region 1 CIT. In fact, the CIT Officer of the year for both 2013, Officer Theresa Heberer, and 2014, Officer Michael Aerni, were Sandpoint PD officers.” While we hear the news reports of the incidents involving those who are mentally ill, it is the number of incidents that go unreported to the public that is astounding. “Our department handles more mental health holds than any other department in our county,” said Bailey. When an individual becomes harmful to him or herself, police are called in. Oftentimes, there is not a bed available at Kootenai Health to treat the person. Until then, the individual is checked into Bonner General Health where a police officer will provide round-the-clock supervision to ensure the safety of the individual.
As of mid November, there had been 26 mental health related calls in 2015 that ended up with an officer placing an individual into protective custody or what the officers refer to as a “mental hold.”
And the officers are trained to make those decisions based on one factor – safety.
“That is an average of just over 2.3 per month,” said Chief Coon who added that the Sandpoint Police Department has spent over 900 hours this year on mental holds in 2015 through mid November. They average 35 hours per mental hold, and the cost of covering that is approximately $22,500. “This is an estimate because we are able to cover some holds within our shifts and some holds we contract out to a private security company,” said Chief Coon. He also said that the police and probation officers are the only ones who can place an immediate hold on affected individuals.
Yet, Giffin said it is important for people to realize that there is not always going to be the best outcome. “Even with all our training, bad things will still happen,” said Giffen.
“Our goal is to get people the help they need and get them back on track,” said Bailey. And the statistics show they are successful. “We get very few repeat offenders,” said Chief Coon. Chief Coon is fiercely protective of his officers and stands by them knowing they will make the correct decision in a life or death situation. “It is important for people to understand that we care about our community, and our officers will do the right thing every time,” he said. “There are split second decisions that need to be made.”
SandpointLivingLocal.com
36
“Safety of our officers and the community are the top priority,” shared Detective Eric Ryan.
“It’s the good stuff people never hear about,” said Dressel of the many lives they have saved. Looking to the future, Bailey said he would like to see every county in the state operate like Kootenai County, which has crisis teams and mental health court for people on probation. Until then, the Sandpoint Police Department will continue to do what it has to help those with mental illness. “It may take a lot of manpower, but at the end of the day we’re helping a lot of people,” said Heberer. Chief Corey Coon invites the community to learn more about the Sandpoint Police Department including receiving up to date alerts through their Facebook page.

Named one of America’s Best Dentists three out of the last seven years, Dr. Johnson and his staff of seven work hard to earn their superior reputation. His business has tripled since he started his practice, and he is currently searching for an additional dentist to join his team. Dr. Johnson is here for the long term as is evidenced by the recent purchase of his building and extensive remodel. “We invested in state-of-the-art equipment,” he said emphasizing his desire to bring his patients the latest technology. One such improvement is handheld x-ray machines. “It provides better imaging and is safer,” said Dr. Johnson. “It allows us to stand right beside the patient while the x-ray is being taken thus minimizing the number of x-rays taken.” Another newly purchased piece of equipment also allows him the ability to do implants right in his office. And if you think going to the dentist has to be a stressful experience, think again. Their new patient chairs are memory foam and leather. “We actually have patients who fall asleep in the chair,” said Dr. Johnson. They also provide neck pillows and a massage chair to relax even the most anxious patient. In a few months Aspire Dental will implement the Six Month Smile program. It allows patients to improve their smile with straighter teeth in just six months time through invisible braces. It has done much to boost the confidence of many adults who have gone through life being selfconscious. Some of the other services he provides include the newest in dental implant dentures. Made from cubic zirconia, they stay white and are very durable. “They started in Hollywood,” said Dr. Johnson. Aspire Dental works with all insurance companies and is the preferred provider for four companies. But even if you do not have insurance, you can still save with the patient loyalty program, and the specialists they use honor their patient loyalty rates as well. Aspire Dental enjoys giving back to the community through its Aspire Angels program. The staff nominates people they think are deserving of free dental service; people who may have fallen on difficult times and have not been to the dentist for a long time. “We have had five or six over the last 18 months,” said Dr. Johnson. One of those Angels was a high school student who was self conscious and rarely smiled, not

wanting to show her teeth. After donating approximately $12,000 worth of work, Dr. Johnson saw her transform into a confident young woman with a beautiful smile. “She had considered dropping out of high school, but is now looking at colleges and wants to intern with me as she is considering a career in dentistry,” said Dr. Johnson, who also has donated time and supplies to Kinderhaven, the Selkirk School and the recent Convoy of Hope.
“Our office motto is always deliver more than people pay for. Over delivering is the key to true growth for all involved,” said Dr. Johnson.

At 15, Payton Bokowy has already made her mark in the world of swimming. She was nominated for the North Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame as a freshman and has already earned four state titles. Payton was named MVP her freshman and sophomore years and will serve as team captain for 2016. “I began swim lessons at the age of three and started competing at the club level at age seven,” said Payton, who is a straight-A student and is enrolled in five honors and AP courses. Payton’s goal is to swim for a competitive Division 1 school. “I am going to start my college visits over spring break to help narrow down my choices,” said Payton who has a recruiting site set up. “It’s fun to see

when colleges look at my profile and start following me!” Payton credits her success to her coach Mike Brosnahan, with whom she has been training for 12 years. “I also began dry land training at The Shed with Jen Merwin a couple of years ago,” said Payton emphasizing that her swim and dry land training have to be timed just right. Payton enjoys the competition and camaraderie that swimming gives her and is grateful for the support of not only her teammates but all the swimmers she has met. “I have made so many friends from other teams that I would never have met if I hadn’t started swimming competitively.”

Jack Reeves A sophomore at Sandpoint High School, Jack Reeves knows what it takes to compete and succeed. Jack is one of the few sophomores who is on the varsity basketball team and is one of the state’s top golfers – all while maintaining a 3.9 GPA. Over the last two summers Jack’s accomplishments in golf have included placing sixth at the Washington State Junior Championship, winning a tournament in Arizona and winning the Idaho State Junior Championship. Having done all this while still a sophomore, Jack’s future goals are very realistic. “After high school I plan to attend a Division 1 college. My goal is to receive a scholarship to play golf at the collegiate level,” said Jack
who adds that he would also like to one day compete on the PGA Tour. “I also would like to keep connected to the game of basketball when I get older, whether it is coaching or something along that line. I have such a passion for the game and I would want that to continue.” While Jack has had injuries along the way, it has not deterred him from pursuing the sports he loves. “When you have to sit out during games or tournaments because of these injuries, it makes you work that much harder to come back stronger and better than you were,” he said. When asked what is the biggest lesson he has learned from being an athlete, Jack responded, “I have learned that nobody can determine your attitude but yourself.”

Impacting the Future Nonprofit works to advance Lake Pend Oreille School District
SITTING IN THE BUSTLING offices of Panhandle Alliance for Education, the friendly energy is almost palpable as Panhandle Alliance for Education (PAFE) Executive Director Marcia Wilson and board member Patty Schwartz share the past, present and future of this vitally effective nonprofit created solely for the benefit of the Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD). Before PAFE was founded, a succession of multiple school district superintendents in 10 years, coupled with a contentious school board, created a lack of sustained direction for LPOSD. When Seattle attorney Bill Berg and his wife Mindy Cameron moved to Sandpoint, they noticed this situation and remembered Seattle’s successful community model of school support. Perceiving a need for the same in Sandpoint, they founded PAFE on that example in 2002. Since then, thanks to the enthusiastic, sustained support of the business community, PAFE’s teacher and school grants total more than $1 million, and they have built a $2.6 million endowment in addition to being the beneficiary of a $380,000 endowment for art, music and general education. PAFE boasts distributing teacher grants totaling $1.25 million invested into classrooms, the READY! For Kindergarten early childhood literacy program, college and career guidance counselor and center, the VIP Volunteer Program with more than 15,000 hours in one year, and an endowment with more than $3,000,000 in reserve.

PAFE programs for LPOSD have made it one of the top school districts in Idaho with the highest SAT scores in math and reading in the state. They boast a 90 percent high school graduation rate, and a high rate (78 percent) of graduates attend college or post technical training. At the junior high level, 90 percent of eighth grade students read at or above proficiency. Although the teamwork of PAFE and the business community accomplishes miracles both major and minor in education, it is the educators themselves that lead the process. “We impose nothing,” explains Marcia. “Every idea has an educator as the originator and they know what will make a difference.”
PAFE through community participation, the ideas mesh into a continuous support system intended to help every student attain their personal best and go on to higher education and better jobs. Some ideas are fun, as well as effective. For little ones learning to read out loud, there is “Learning with Lucky.” PAFE provides “nonjudgmental reading partners” – stuffed animals – soft-eyed, soft-eared little toy puppies that snuggle close and listen attentively. All of the ideas are practical, and most are proactive. PAFE support starts even before enrollment in kindergarten. “Proactive” is a popular term,
but PAFE does it one better by being PREproactive, beginning with a library card given to a newborn’s parents by the nurse! With the library card come helpful hints on how to read to your child, complete with a book to read and an invitation to join the READY! Program which helps prepare children for kindergarten. “A child needs the support of parents, teachers and the community, and this is the step that prompts the parents to begin playing their part,” clarifies Marcia. “When children begin kindergarten, they need to know numbers and recognize symbols, understand rudimentary math, and have a level of literacy that recognizes a few letters,
names and rhyming words,” she explains. So the question becomes, what about children who aren’t at this level when they enter kindergarten? From the educational frontlines come the ideas, revelations of needs, problem alerts, and looming issues. From the partnership of community and PAFE come the responses now transforming the education and future of our students and ultimately, our world.
PAFE offers scholarships for allday kindergarten so students who aren’t quite ready can catch up and be positioned for success with their peers. “Students learn to read between kindergarten and third grade,” explains Marcia. “Third grade can be a make-orbreak milestone and after that time it’s very hard for them to catch up. From kindergarten to
The ideas span the educational continuum from pre-kindergarten to beyond college graduation. Thoughtfully realized by

third grade, they learn to read. After that, they read to learn. And if they are behind, it’s very hard to catch up to the reading level plus keep up with the assigned reading at the same time.”
Third grade can be a make-or-break milestone and after that time it’s very hard for them to catch up. Another new program, “Step Up to Writing” for kindergarten to 12th grade “is very powerful because it is systemic,” says Marcia. “They focus on writing in all classes, not just English. They apply writing to art and math, for instance. Knowing how to write and communicate effectively will give all students a leg up in their life and career.” The program even addresses the writing elements of email, texts and social media. And it’s excellent preparation for college applications and essays. For high school seniors facing a future speeding toward them, PAFE provides support for a district counselor to help develop a career plan, and assist in the college application process, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and American College Testing (ACT) testing, financial aid, educational programs, scholarships, and more. Jeralyn Mire, the 2015 Guidance Counselor of the Year in Idaho, is committed to being a mentor and friend. There are decisions to make, educational steps to take, financing to procure and forms to fill out. “She helps students every step of the way with the kind of careful follow-up that can make the difference, and she has contacts at colleges for information on local and available scholarships,” says Patty, adding, “After their graduation, she keeps in touch to ascertain their success and gives them additional help if they need it.” There’s even a designated career planning center with computers and college catalogs for the students to research their future possibilities. PAFE board members and staff are gratified to be helping not only students, but teachers and the community. “We hope to give teachers

a sense of community support and pride in the excellence they provide to the students. We want them to know they are valued and appreciated,” says Marcia, “because when they take advantage of funding for classroom enrichment programs, the positive domino effect is huge.” “And after all,” adds Patty, “great schools are part of what makes a great community. One of the first questions people ask a realtor is, ‘What are the schools like?’” As teachers continue to bring ideas, PAFE and the business community will continue to make them realities. And everyone wins.

Startup Garners Nationwide Attention Drone manufacturer, xCraft, surpasses its goals with Kickstarter and wows Shark Tank judges By Jani Gonzalez Photos courtesy of xCraft

A Brief History of Drones Some of the earliest drones date back to the 1850s here in the United States and not surprisingly, were used in military operations. 1849: Balloons mounted with bombs were used during the U.S. Civil War. 1898: A camera mounted to a kite was used for reconnaissance during the Spanish-American Wars. 1900s: Target drones were used to test and train combat pilots. 1916: Remotely piloted planes are developed. 1920s: Remotely controlled ships are used and interest grows in vehicles that can be controlled from a distance. 1946: Pilotless Aircraft Branch established. 1950s: The U.S. Marine Corps used drone to protect surface warships. 1964: Drones are used for spying missions 1968: Lightning Bug drones used for surveillance during the Vietnam War.

or JD Claridge, the past year has been nothing short of success for his company, xCraft, with two Kickstarter campaigns that went far beyond their funding targets and an historic deal on the hit inventor show, Shark Tank. Claridge, CEO of xCraft, is the inventor of the X PlusOne and the PhoneDrone Ethos. Originally from Spokane, the Sandpoint aerospace engineer and licensed pilot says he’s been designing aircraft since he could fly a paper airplane. “Flying has been a fascination of mine for as long as I can remember,” Claridge said. He came to Sandpoint initially to work for Quest Aircraft and later began his own consulting firm, Aero Designworks. His

drone, the X PlusOne, began as a side project and went through five prototypes, currently hanging in his office, before finding the one that worked. “It started as a hobby – it was an idea I had and wanted to see if I could develop a working prototype,” he said of the innovative drone design. “The first time we flew it, it was flawless.” The drone’s uniqueness is its ability to “become an airplane” and transition to forward flight after a vertical lift off. With traditional quadcopters (drones with four motors), the device has to pitch forward to go faster, but there’s a limit because it uses the motor’s forward thrust for lift. “I thought if we could tilt (the drone) 90 degrees and turn the wings, we’d be using
the motor’s power for thrust and just use the battery for power,” he explained. With the support of Charles Manning, CEO of Kochava and also in Sandpoint, they began xCraft in 2014 focusing solely on the design and manufacturing of drones. The two met informally and later Claridge asked Manning for advice on the X PlusOne. “I thought it was a cool idea and really well timed,” Manning said. “I told him to go after it, but he wanted me involved.” Manning said he mainly works at promoting the company as an aside to heading Kochava. “I love it,” he said. From Kickstarter Phenomena to Shark Tank Spotlight To raise funds and market the X PlusOne, Claridge went to Kickstarter. He initially had a goal of $50,000, which more than doubled to $143,400 before the campaign ended. That success inevitably lead to another. “We launched that product (X PlusOne), and we got noticed by Shark Tank. They asked if we were interested. They had been looking for a drone company, and we got selected to tape and got aired. Not everyone gets aired,” Claridge said. “That was pretty exciting and a big deal.”
The Shark Tank episode, which aired at the end of October, was distinct from previous ones in that the judges were visibly impressed from the start with the X PlusOne. Having such a huge success with their initial Kickstarter campaign, was also a big advantage to have in their favor. Claridge also used the opportunity to introduce his newest product, the PhoneDrone Ethos, which converts most smartphones into a drone by inserting it into a protective exoskeleton. Claridge and Manning initially asked for $500,000 for 20 percent equity; half to expand the X PlusOne and the remainder to develop the PhoneDrone Ethos. Right away, the offers were for more than their request, which is unusual for the show. Kevin O’Leary, “Mr. Wonderful,” offered $750,000 for 25 percent; Lori Greiner, the QVC queen, offered $1 million for 20 percent; and Daymond John offered the same for 25 percent. Smelling a “shark war” the judges asked for time to discuss a deal amongst themselves, which is unprecedented on the show. The five sharks each bought into the company at $300,000 each for 5 percent equity – for a total of $1.5 million at 25 percent equity in addition to other investors that xCraft already has. More than 10 million people watched the show, and the interest generated from it is showing.

“Since the episode, we’ve been channeling a lot of inbound inquiries for job applications and orders. This will take the company to the next level. We are hiring, and we’ve gotten a lot of good applications,” Claridge said.
The drone’s uniqueness is its ability to “become an airplane” and transition to forward flight after a vertical lift off. Although it’s still early in the partnership with the Shark Tank entrepreneurs, Manning said that they had been in contact with some of them in moving forward. “We have had contact with their teams and have spoken to Daymond (John). Things are happening already but not a whole lot yet. It was a big thing to share with them – selling $300,000 a month after the deal – that’s not too shabby,” he said. The Shark Tank episode also helped additionally fund the PhoneDrone Ethos,
“Our vision is to be in the top three in the drone industry in the next three years. It’s ambitious but possible.” where users can program their smartphone and insert it into the drone’s structure. The episode coincided with its Kickstarter campaign, and to date, more than 1,000 backers have funded the Kickstarter goal to $283,902 – far beyond the $100,000 target that had been set at the beginning of December. “We ended up selling 1,256 units which totaled $326,000 or 320 percent of our goal. It’s just something that customers are clearly excited in,” Manning said. The Stars of xCraft: X PlusOne and PhoneDrone Ethos Most drones, unmanned aviation vehicles, are multi-rotor aircraft that can hover but can’t travel as fast; the X PlusOne is fast, stable and lightweight, weighing 2.9 lbs. It’s also more affordable than traditional drones at $1,800 and has a Go Pro mount. It’s similar to other drones in that it can hover and land like a traditional multi-rotor drone. What distinguishes it is its upward-facing wing, which allows it to fly vertical at a 90-degree angle and can fly twice
as fast than other drones, up to 60 mph for up to 20 minutes. “What we have accomplished is amazing. It’s a VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) design – it can hover like a helicopter for take-off and landing, but then go fly like an airplane,” Manning said. The PhoneDrone Ethos allows users to program the drone’s flight path with an app before placing their smartphone into the drone’s structure. “It can be fully autonomous. You draw the flight path, and it automatically draws a path back on its own,” Claridge explained. This way, the drone can perform its “mission” and return back to its user. There is also a mode where the user can control the drone from another device.

“It can also follow you at a selected altitude, which is useful for some sports, and take photos,” he said. While drones are not new, they are creating a

buzz as technology allows more people to use one. The military has used variations of drones to collect data or surveillance at least since the 1850s when balloons mounted with bombs were used during the U.S. Civil War. “(xCraft has) received a tremendous amount of exposure because of Shark Tank and Kickstarter. Drone space as a whole is a really big growth market,” Manning said. The xCraft drones are meant for a variety of activities from entertainment to commercial applications. To date, most of the orders are for personal use. Users need to comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, fly no higher than 400 feet and avoid airports. Privacy laws still apply in regards to airspace over private property and government spaces. The current general rule is to “fly within the line of sight.” In mid December, the FAA issued a requirement that drone users register any unmanned aircraft weighing from 1 to 55 pounds on their website. But the X PlusOne’s capabilities can go far beyond the allowances given to consumers. It can cruise at heights up to 10,000 feet, applicable for activities ranging from aerial photography and mapping to search and rescue. Commercial entities can request FAA permission to use drones at those distances
though this market is still relatively untapped. Manning gave an example of its potential use as an agricultural tool. “What if you used a color spectrum camera where you could see where you were underwater (and) it would give you feedback,” he said. The military might be an obvious market for drones, but Claridge doesn’t want to see his drones used as weapons. “We don’t want to be weaponized but (have the drones) used more as a level of surveillance,” he said. New Market in Drones – Bright Future for xCraft For this young company, the general interest and excitement over the production of the X PlusOne and the PhoneDrone Ethos is just the beginning of a long line of inventive drones with an abundance of possibilities. Currently, xCraft is considering the demand for larger, faster drones that can fly for longer and with heavier payloads. The xCraft drones could collect data for industries that helicopters provide but at much more reasonable cost. “We want to get a larger version on the market

for industries such as oil rigs and mines. This is a utility-driven business and not just a fancy product,” Manning said. He also noted that Amazon’s recent announcement on a future drone delivery service shows the fast, growing interest companies have in using drones to facilitate their business needs. But for now, xCraft is manufacturing to fill their Kickstarter orders for shipment and distribution this summer. The versatility of the products allow for it to be applicable to a number of industries and consumers from the hobbyist to the unmanned vehicle (UV) specialist, securing the long-term viability of the products. “I’m excited to have this in Sandpoint – it’s exciting and there’s nothing but goodness,” Manning said of the company. Claridge is looking beyond xCraft’s two products and has goals to grow the company and make it an industry leader. “Our vision is to be in the top three in the drone industry in the next three years. It’s ambitious but possible,” Claridge said. For more information about xCraft, visit the website xcraft.io.

THE ROAD TO
Finding a happy balance in an overly indulgent world By Megan Olson
SandpointLivingLocal.com
62
There is something about a quiet space that is calming to the human psyche. Tranquility is essential as it refuels our joy.
H
ow are we already standing at the threshold of 2016? Another year has faded into the background like steam rising on a winter’s morning. We hold these moments just before us and in an instant they diminish like vapors that will never be seen again. Another holiday season has come to pass, and we begin our ascension of emotional and financial recovery. It’s the dawn of a new year; that time where many of us contemplate our fresh beginnings. In its quest for happiness, the discontented human spirit eagerly seeks change in the form of resolutions. Perhaps it is time to search for happiness that can only be found by simplifying life.
organized and spending less. All point in the direction of seeking happiness through the trimming down and simplification of life. The human spirit has this intrinsic notion that less is more as it pursues the road to happiness. My daughter’s fourth birthday marked the one year anniversary of being on our own as a family. I have worked very hard and have refused to let her go “without.” I think that single parenthood has only fueled my need to prove that “I can give my kid that too.” I gave her a party as though the summation of all my pride was contingent upon that moment. She adored Rapunzel and so my princess would have her Rapunzel party. I threw her a party that could not be rivaled in all the land. To mimic the movie “Tangled,” a live Princess Rapunzel (with real hair) rode in on a gallant steed to wish my daughter a happy birthday.
The holiday season can be a time of great merriment, but it can also send many into a tailspin of stress and anxiety. You’re not alone if you’re feeling emotionally and financially depleted at the end of the holiday season. The crowds and monetary burdens of shopping, the company Christmas party, and the family gathering (that includes Cousin Eddie and Aunt Bethany) might be just enough to push any sane person over the edge. It should come as no surprise that 45 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions in an effort to seek change and well-being. The Research Institute reports the top three New Year’s resolutions as losing weight, getting
SandpointLivingLocal.com
It wasn’t until my daughter’s fifth birthday drew near that I knew that I had over-complicated birthdays for all time. I had given her the grand apex of birthdays before she was even in kindergarten. All she really wanted on that day was to be recognized, eat cake and to play with her friends. All she really wanted was something so very simple. This notion provokes the rhetorical question of “at what age do we begin to drift away from the simplicity of life?” By sacrificing our own simplicity,
63
we are ultimately moving away from our own happiness. This last November, the Pacific Northwest was hit by a catastrophic windstorm that reached speeds of near hurricane velocity. Hundreds of thousands went without power for days and some for weeks. As a resident of Eastern Washington, I too sat in utter darkness as the wind swept through like a thief in the night. One faint glimpse of light after another faded into the darkness as though it had been swept away by the sea. I work from home; my career and livelihood are dependent upon electricity and modern technology. As soon as the crack could be heard from the falling tree, all conveniences were immediately terminated by Mother Nature until further notice. No electrically generated light, heat, nor sound could be summoned from the pit of that kind of darkness. One’s focus is redirected when stripped of all work obligations and modern distractions. Such an environmental occurrence propagates a new life direction that is comprised of only the basics: heat, food, shelter and love. A Facebook status suddenly becomes insignificant. Maslow’s assertions on the basic needs of humanity are undeniably precise. For my family, the power failure resulted in new found simplicity and joy. It facilitated opportunity to play card games with my daughter that I had been putting off for months. We were able to go for walks during the daylight and have conversations that we might not have had otherwise. We discovered that we are innovative engineers when it comes
to crafting a warm water showering system. We prepared daily meals from our woodstove to share with our beloved neighbors that have become more like family than just “the people that live next door.” We were given the absolutely greatest gift; that of modern day minimalism and opportunity to engage. It’s no wonder that the trend towards “tiny houses” has surged in recent years. Homes the size of recreational vehicles are being built across the country as an avenue for people to downsize. There is an actual association called The Tiny House Movement that consists of individuals seeking to scale down and live more efficiently. This new generation of houses range between 100 and 400 square feet. The association reports that the average size home in the United States is 2,600 square feet. It is estimated that one-third to one-half of a family’s income is spent on a mortgage. The average size “tiny house” costs less than $30,000 to build, and most owners are debt free. The tiny house philosophy takes a minimalistic approach that is designed to free valuable time and resources. The tiny house concept isn’t going to be for everyone; particularly for those with larger families. The underlying premise of life simplification is cutting what is unnecessary. A reduction of excess can range from lifestyle to clutter. There is something about a quiet space that is calming to the human psyche. Tranquility is essential as it refuels our joy. That’s why so many leave the hustle of the city to find serenity at the beach or in the woods.
For my family, the power failure resulted in newfound simplicity and joy.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
Whatever the solution may be, the importance is to find your path to simplicity. The real value is in family – giving of your love and your time.
64
Not only is it necessary to maintain those healthy boundaries and relationships, it’s imperative to reduce the physical clutter.
In terms of chaos in our daily lives, we sometimes fail to assess our lifestyle and recognize how we over-extend ourselves. Too many obligations can be a way of becoming trapped in the busyness of day to day living. It’s easy to become swept into the vicious cycle of being a people-pleaser at the expense of generating damage to one’s own life. If this scenario sounds all too familiar, it’s possibly time to consider practicing the word “no.” It’s okay to set healthy boundaries and fight the impulse of appeasing every person. You can politely decline without being considered ill-mannered. There is a reason that flight attendants tell passengers to put their oxygen mask on first before coming to the aid of others. When we overcommit ourselves, we foster a great deal of unnecessary stress. By always saying yes, you are potentially sacrificing your own health and well-being. Selectively declining requests enables you to simplify your life and puts you on the path to happiness.
Not only is it necessary to maintain those healthy boundaries and relationships, it’s imperative to reduce the physical clutter. In theory, cleaning the house sounds like a seemingly simple task. Unfortunately, the reality is we live in a world of chaos. I always think back to college chemistry. A clean house is kind of like entropy. The house begins in this lovely and clean condition and then rapidly fizzles out into a state of mayhem. The dishes and laundry were completely done for about 12 seconds. Twelve seconds might even be bragging a little. I don’t think my professor was relating a clean house to the Laws of Thermodynamics, but anyone that has children or a messy housemate surely understands this quandary. It’s impossible to keep a house clean for any extended amount of time. We will never be able to completely avoid entropy in the sense that our organized state will always be destined for disarray.
“The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less.” ~ Socrates • If you are one who wants to simplify your life, but don’t know where to start, here are some tips to help you begin. • Start by going through your home one room at a time. If there is something you find that you have not used in a long time and at one time brought you joy, consider giving it away and imparting that joy on someone else. • Familiarize yourself with local nonprofits. Many of them rely on donations to keep operating. By donating your used items to these organizations, you are paying it forward and helping others. • When taking an inventory of your belongings, keep those things that bring you happiness and make your life easier. • It may be overwhelming at first to part with too many items. After your first

“purge,” go through your belongings again in three months. • If you are undecided about whether or not to donate a certain item, try putting it in storage for a period of time until you are sure. • Lastly, remember that happiness is not found in possessions, but in those relationships that are important to us!
As we progress and learn to let go of our worldly possessions and the need for constant acquisition of new items, our finances suddenly become less strained.
For most Americans, accumulating “stuff ” is the primary method of over-complicating life. It’s imperative to ask “Do I really need this?” The rule is, if you haven’t used something for 18 months, chances are you never will. Stripping your home of the bulk of its possessions can be one of the most difficult yet liberating of all the simplifying tasks.
“Baby’s first Christmas dress” evolved into holding on to the crusty old T-shirt from Elementary kids’ third annual walka-thon. I had accumulated enough sentimental baby items to stock a thrift store. It’s very difficult to let go when we become sentimental and emotionally attached to our “stuff.”
Gutting out the home can be particularly taxing with children. Let’s face it , it’s a challenge to keep up with all of the clothes, toys and books that children outgrow every few months. Historically, I have not been overly sentimental about my possessions – until I had a baby. The thought of giving away the tiny outfits worn by my little “bundle of joy” would bring tears to my eyes. I would see an outfit and immediately be brought back to a special moment in time. “But she wore that dress the first time she smiled.” Before I knew it, the saving of
SandpointLivingLocal.com
It’s important to learn to separate the truly important items from the rest. I had to ask myself “will my daughter want this when she’s older?” I allowed myself to keep 20 things for her keepsake box. To remedy the situation of letting go of the other items, I took pictures and made a scrapbook of what I was afraid I would eventually miss. Once I let them go, I never missed them. In fact, giving them away allowed me to bless someone else’s little girl.

As we progress and learn to let go of our worldly possessions and the need for constant acquisition of new items, our finances suddenly become less strained. The American Research Group anticipates that Christmas spending for 2015 will be up 2 percent from last year. The data collected from around the country in a random sample suggests that the American family will spend upwards of $900 on presents this year. Giving gifts makes us feel joyful and the heart rejoices in the feeling of generosity. Watching the beaming faces of little children open presents on Christmas morning is unparalleled. Sometimes, we buy more gifts than what we have money to afford. CSNBC reports that the mean credit card debt is about $8,000. Some suggest that the key to affording Christmas is finding deals all year long. Others prepare creative and innovative homemade gifts. Whatever the solution may be, the importance is to find your path to simplicity. The real value is in family – giving of your love and your time. We cannot be replaced. Some of our friends and family might not make it into the next year. Hold onto your moments and treasure each and every one of them because before we know it, you will be reading what I have to say for 2017.

Get Organized in 2016 CLEANING OUT THAT WARDROBE FOR A CLEAN SLATE
BY MICHELLE PHILLIPS
Have fun with this project and merchandise your closet as though it were a darling boutique.
CREATING A WARDROBE can be challenging. Most of our closets are packed full. But if you are like most people, you wear about 20 percent of your wardrobe 80 percent of the time. Paring down is the imperative to a streamlined, fabulous wardrobe.
• • • • •
dresses, long sweaters and jackets pants and skirts golf /athletic wear shirts and blouses sweaters (these may be hung or folded on open shelves)
Imagine if you donated 50 to 80 percent of your wardrobe that you don’t ever wear and then added a few key pieces? Wouldn’t it be easy to choose your outfit every morning from all of your favorite clothes? Can you imagine a closet full of only great pieces that look fabulous on you?
Start with one section at a time and evaluate each piece – try it on, when did you wear it last? Do you love it? Is it flattering, up to date and in great shape? If so, it’s a keeper. Place it in its section of closet. If not, determine whether it is sellable, needs to be donated or tailored and place in appropriate pile.
Why wait for spring when you can start 2016 with a fresh, organized closet? You are sure to feel more in control of your life – excess stuff creates stress.
Once you have finished one group, arrange that section so that the more formal items are towards the back of section and the items worn most often are more accessible. I suggest keeping like items together and arranged by color. Have fun with this project and merchandise your closet as though it were a darling boutique.
I have created a quick, easy way for you to start your new year with stress-free style. If you are able to, it is best to limit the color choices so that most items can be mixed and matched. For example, my base wardrobe is black and my accent colors are shades of green and grey. Starting with a clean slate is the easiest way. Start by removing everything from your closet. Dust and vacuum all of the shelves and make sure you have adequate lighting. Choose which sections will house which types of items. I find it easiest to create one section for:

Getting Back to Basics... AND OTHER SIMPLISTIC TRUTHS
BY SUSAN MOORE, OWNER OF BETTER GYM, GIG HARBOR, WA
IF YOU CAN SEE IT, you can be it. Abs are made in the kitchen. Getting back to basics. We’ve all heard these sayings and thought them to be nonsense. No one wants to go back to the beginning of a path to get further down the road. But what if these are necessary mindsets to ensure success? As of this point in our society’s wellness research we know one thing for sure, and that is that no one seems to agree on anything when it comes to how to be healthy. Most every concept has been proven and disproven through every conceivable study. But what if we just do what we’ve always known to be true? Losing weight is easy. That’s right, I said it. It’s
SandpointLivingLocal.com

not complicated, and all it takes is consistency. It goes back to abs are made in the kitchen. Are you currently at a weight that you are happy with? If you can say yes to that question, feel free to skip to the next paragraph. Still reading, aren’t you? Abs really are made or destroyed in the kitchen. I have a number of rules about eating. I like rules because they are boundaries, and in my experience all humans function better when they have boundaries to work within. Even if they periodically go outside said boundaries, they did it because they wanted to and not because they didn’t know any better. Saying I “don’t” do things is empowering; saying I “can’t” do something is demoralizing.

Boundaries. Don’t eat anything that can’t nourish your body in some way. Before you eat something, look at it and make sure you are eating it mindfully, no matter what it is. If it’s a candy bar, then you aren’t actively trying to lose weight. If it’s fast food, your goal isn’t to be healthy. You can give all the reasons, also known as excuses, you want but every bite, lick and taste you put in your mouth has a purpose. It’s either fuel or fuel for later (fat). Make your choice.
person in general. Most common, time tested sayings or cliches came from somewhere. Most everything we need to have a better life has already been found, invented or discovered. Sometimes, all we need is simplicity.
What kind of fuel is just as important. We tend to take better care of our cars than our bodies. If you were to buy a new expensive German vehicle, would you put regular unleaded gasoline in your tank? You can always buy a new car, but we only get one body. We need to treat it at least as well as we do our vehicles. If you treat your car like a garbage can, it’s because it’s not important to you. If you knew that it was your forever car would you change how you treat it? Think about that for a minute. Look at yourself in the mirror for a second. This is your forever body. Getting stronger takes practice. It also takes visualization. “If you can see it, you can be it”. Our bodies don’t speak English. When I am coaching people, I have to find words to cue people to get them to move the way I want them to. If more than one person in my session isn’t getting the movement I am coaching, it isn’t their fault it’s mine. All I have to do to get someone to move better is say something in a way that causes a visual response. So if there is something you really want to do, visualize it. Take your time and don’t just visualize the outcome but also what it realistically took to get there. Now make a plan based on the visualization drill. It works. Every time. The last last truth I gave an example of was “getting back to basics”. It could be my favorite. We’ve all heard it, but how often have you actually thought about it and done it. You should and can get back to basics in every part of your life. Want to lose weight? Get back to the basics of food. Good basic forms of proteins, carbs and fats. Want to move better? Start on the ground learning to roll around and crawl before load-bearing movements. The basics you learned as a toddler. It’s the same with health and fitness as it is with finance, studying, or even just trying to be a better

Reduce Your Risk of Falls WARM WATER THERAPY CAN HELP! BY JENNY JONES, PT, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY IN THIS WINTER SEASON, it is easy for anyone to fall and possibly get injured; but our elder population has an increased risk of falling anywhere. The elderly have a nine times greater risk of dying from a fall than a 20-year-old driver does in an auto accident. Loss of balance, however, does not have to be an inevitable and “unfixable” part of the aging process. Decreased balance is not always apparent. Many folks can walk upright in a straight path without aid of a cane and seem fine, but the trick comes when they may have to turn around, raise their arms, or step over an object. Reaching out to touch furniture or walls while walking is known as “cruising” and a sure sign that they need the extra stability of a cane or possibly even a walker. Canes, walkers, furniture and a friend’s arm can all add security and decrease the chance of a fall but will not stop the progression of loss of balance. Our vision, vestibular (inner ear), posture, muscle strength and feeling in our lower limbs all affect posture and some of these can be corrected. One of the body’s first lines of defense for maintaining standing balance comes from our ankle muscles’ ability to continuously adjust how our body is positioned over our
feet to maintain balance. Hips next come into play to keep us upright. The ability to recover our balance once it is challenged involves the ability to quickly take a step, shift our trunk or outstretch an arm. All these factors can be relearned through physical therapy, as well as correcting postural problems such as tight or weak muscles, especially the back muscles, which begin to succumb to gravity in the elderly population. Balance improves consistently for the majority of patients who participate in warm water pool therapy. Muscles can be stretched and strengthened in the buoyant environment. Balance can be challenged and worked on without the fear of falling. Balance tasks can be progressed at different depths with the greatest risk being getting a hairdo wet!
Your Goals Are Our Priority!
Happy New Year from the staff at Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool
If balance has become as issue for you or a loved one, your doctor can refer you to a physical therapist for evaluation and set up a treatment program. A walker does not always have to become necessary if balance loss can be corrected. Stay safe and be careful on that ice! Jenny Jones, PT has been a licensed physical therapist since 1980 and is passionate about her vocation.

Five Needto-Know Facts ASSESS WHETHER YOU ARE AT RISK FOR HEART FAILURE
FROM CASUAL CONVERSATION to pop culture, the heart is the organ we love to talk about. We reminisce about our high school heartthrobs, center our hearts in yoga class and cry over our last heartbreaks. The human heart is important – essential, actually – but not infallible. Heart failure is the cause for over a million hospital visits in the U.S. annually and an unimaginable $31 billion dollars of health care expenses. It is a chronic, progressively worsening disease with high mortality that affects more than 5.1 million Americans. Is your heart at risk? Here are five facts about heart failure that you need to know: Heart failure occurs from an overworking heart. Heart failure occurs when the heart can’t pump enough blood to meet the body’s demands. Initially, in patients with heart damage from problems such as coronary artery disease, heart attack or chronic high blood pressure, the heart will work harder to provide the body an appropriate blood supply. As the heart becomes overworked, the heart muscle gradually weakens. Over time, the heart will fail to pump appropriately, generating a condition commonly known as heart failure. Identifying heart failure is tricky. Most people don’t discover they have heart failure until after they have experienced a heart attack or stroke. The leading causes of heart failure are diseases that damage the heart.

Heart failure is common. Every 30 seconds, someone in America is hospitalized due to heart failure. In the United States, 550,000 people are diagnosed with this disease each year, and 30 percent of these individuals will pass away within six to 12 months. Certain groups are at an increased risk. AfricanAmericans are 20 times more likely to have heart failure before the age of 40. People over age 65 are at the greatest susceptibility. There is hope. New treatments and innovative monitoring tools are now available for people with heart failure. These include the CardioMEMS HF System, a first-of-its-kind remote monitoring device for Class III heart failure patients. The device, developed by St. Jude Medical, creates a monitoring bridge between a patient’s home and care team by remotely sending vital information to the physician’s office on a regular basis. Stay in control. If at risk for heart failure, manage your health by scheduling a checkup with your physician. If you have heart failure, talk to your physician about your options, including remote monitoring tools like the CardioMEMS HF System. The human heart has earned a spot in our everyday conversation for a reason. Don’t take this organ for
granted. Find more information about St. Jude Medical and its commitment to healthy hearts at www.heartfailureanswers.com. The Perfect Partner PEARS MAKE A GREAT CHOICE FOR WHOLESOME SNACKING
Half of all eating occasions in the U.S. are now snack-driven.
ADULTS EVERYWHERE are reaching for healthy snacks to fuel their families, and a fresh pear’s juicy, subtle flavor pairs well with snacks such as almonds, walnuts and cheese. America’s snacking obsession is about to get fresh with portable, packable, pair-able pears. In season nearly year-round, fresh pears are mainly grown in Oregon and Washington by 1,600 families who produce about 84 percent of the nation’s fresh pear crop. Pears are available in a range of varieties, from the signaturesweet Bartlett to the crisp, woodsy Bosc to the juicy Anjou. A recent usage study commissioned by USA Pears showed that 46 percent of pear consumers eat them as mid-morning and afternoon snacks. Pears are often considered best eaten fresh and just-sliced, making them a perfect partner for wholesome, simple snacking – think sliced pears atop whole-grain toast, wrapped with prosciutto, dipped in nut butters or partnered with blue or aged, hard cheeses. Half of all eating occasions in the U.S. are now snack-driven. According to a recent Mintel report on snacking, 94 percent of Americans snack at least once a day, compared to just 64 percent last year. Thirty-three percent say they are choosing healthier foods this year compared to last year, with an emphasis on

simple ingredients. Millennials are leading the way and are more likely than any other demographic to snack multiple times throughout the day. Pears are a nutrient-dense, fat-free food, an excellent source of fiber and a good source of vitamin C for only 100 calories per serving. To tell when a pear is ripe, simply check the neck. If the pear gives slightly to pressure near the stem end, it’s juicy and ready for snacking. With a warm growing season in the Pacific Northwest, a greater number of high-quality fruits are available at a “snackable” size – perfect for throwing in a lunchbox, purse or string bag on the way out the door. Looking for more simple snacking tips? Think outside the cracker box: • Slice pears atop whole-grain toast • Wrap pear slices in prosciutto • Pair pears with blue cheese, parmesan or aged white cheddar • Dip pears into yogurt • Pack a pear with a small portion of nuts • Smear slices with almond or cashew butter • Sprinkle diced pears onto chia pudding Visit www.usapears.org for recipes, ripening tips and more.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Caesar Slow Cooker Artichokes
®
Brought to you by Litehouse Foods Serves: 3 (or 6 halved) Finished in: 3 hours, 15 minutes Gather Ingredients • • • • • • • • •
Put it Together
3 medium artichokes 3 lemons 1-1/2 cups chicken broth 1 cup white wine or cooking wine 1 tablespoon Litehouse® Instantly Fresh Garlic 1 bay leaf 2/3 cup shaved or grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup garlic crouton crushed into crumbs 4 – 6 ounces Litehouse® Organic Caesar Dressing
1. Prepare artichokes by first washing under water and shaking dry. Next, cut off stems and remove small lower leaves with paring knife. With larger knife, cut 1/2” off the top of artichokes to remove the prickly spines. Use kitchen shears to snip off remaining spines on lower leaves. 2. Cut one lemon in half and rub on exposed areas of artichoke to prevent oxidization. 3. Pour broth, wine, garlic and bay leaf into bottom of 4 quart slow cooker. Place artichokes, bottom side down into slow cooker.

4. Cut second lemon into slices and place a slice on top of each artichoke. Add remaining slices of that lemon to the broth mixture. 5. Put lid on slow cooker and cook on high for approximately 3 hours, or until softened and leaves pull off easily. 6. Transfer artichokes from liquid to serving platter. While still hot, gently squeeze to pull apart leaves and stuff with bits of Parmesan cheese and crouton crumbs. Sprinkle remaining cheese and crumbs on tops of artichokes. 7. Drizzle artichokes with Litehouse® Organic Caesar Dressing and serve with third lemon that has been cut up into wedges.

TRAVEL & LEISURE
AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Combining travel with education provides in-depth experience By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Joanne Heaviland Photography. TRAVEL. It is something that most of us love to do or, at the very least, dream about. Whether it is to lands far away that we have only read about in history books or a place right in our country, travel is filled with adventure and new discoveries. And when you combine that adventure with an opportunity to learn new things, the experience is that much more exciting. From Tourist to Tour Guide Such is the case with Joanne Heaviland,
a professional photographer who lives in Southern California. Heaviland has taken her passion for travel and photography and shared it with others in her photography workshops all over the world. It is a chance to explore, learn and create in some of the most beautiful places on Earth. As an employee for United Airlines when she was just 21, Heaviland had the opportunity to travel all over the world to places such as China, Thailand, Greece, Mexico, Canada, Peru and many places throughout Europe. That

experience, combined with her own heritage, gave her a taste of places she would like to explore further. Growing up with an Italian grandmother, Heaviland developed a passion for Italy and Italian food early in life. Her work as a professional photographer and passion for travel are what inspired her to conduct travel photography workshops. “I named my first one in 2013 to Tuscany, Italy ‘Wine, Food & Photography,’” said Heaviland.

“My 2011 trip is what inspired me to do a tour to Peru and also Machu Picchu in June of 2015 that was titled ‘Experience Peru: A Culinary, Cultural and Photography Journey through the land of the Incas.’” The 2011 trip to which Heaviland refers was with a nonprofit group, International Children’s Network, that assists at-risk and orphaned children in countries all around the world. Heaviland traveled to Peru in 2011 as part of the group that was there to choose children for the World Orphan Choir. As she traveled to orphanages in the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 17,000 feet, Heaviland saw young children who had been abandoned, neglected and abused. The children were living in an orphanage so they could attend school – an option that would not be available to them if they lived with their parents. Heaviland shares how, as the children auditioned for the choir, they were singing for their lives. It was their ticket out of poverty to be
able to travel throughout the U.S. performing at schools, churches and community events to bring awareness to the plight of poverty in other parts of the world. Heaviland knew she wanted to be involved. She used her talent as a photographer and as she traveled to the orphanages in Peru, she took photographs of all the orphaned children – one avenue by which potential sponsors could connect with the children. Heaviland sponsors three of those children. But her trip not only changed the lives of the children, it changed hers as well. She fell in love with the country of Peru and vowed to return. She did just that this past year with her Peru tour. “My tours are unique in the sense that I always include wine – or in the case of Peru, their traditional drink of Pisco Sours – food and photography. We also have a cooking class of the traditional food from each particular country, and then I hold photography classes for any of the participants that are interested

in photography,” said Heaviland. “I would say that usually half the people on my tours are interested in learning how to improve their photos. The tours also include cultural and historical tours as well.” Heaviland shares that given the world as it is today, it is often preferable for many to travel as part of a tour. “I think especially women who are traveling alone prefer to travel in a group. They feel safer, but they also enjoy other women who like to travel as well,” said Heaviland. One of those who went on the tour is Chrys Wallen who traveled with her daughter-in-law to Peru this past June. “We had a tour through the local market place in Lima led by our chef at the Sky Kitchen Cooking School,” said Wallen. “It was very fun and informative.” As a novice photographer, Wallen said she appreciated Heaviland’s patience with teaching photography on the trip. “She taught me a lot,” said Wallen who adds that the accommodations

were wonderful and the local guides were very informative. “I am ready to go on another tour with Joanne, whenever and wherever she plans to go, I’m ready.” In addition to returning to Peru and Italy for tours in 2016, Heaviland is currently planning a tour to Ireland for this year, a new place for her. She will announce exact dates in February on her website, www.joanneheavilandphotography.com. Beyond Studying Abroad While many equate such travel with the life of the retired or the wealthy, there are college students who are also choosing to not only study abroad but to also immerse themselves into the culture by taking part in classes that give them a broader understanding of the country in which they choose to temporarily call home. Nichole Pagano is a senior at the University of Idaho where she is majoring in marketing in the College of Business and Economics. She has spent this fall exploring the country of Italy. It’s been exhausting and exhilarating and, given the chance, she would do it all over again. In addition to Italian 1 and Italian 2, her courses include Italian Cuisine and Intercultural Communications. “These classes
in particular have definitely enhanced my experience in Italy,” said Pagano. She shares how her Intercultural Communications class has brought to light many of the cultural barriers between the cultures. “From language to religion to norms and beliefs,” the differences are many. Pagano said that her full Italian experience was definitely enhanced by enrolling in the Italian language classes, as difficult as they have been. “I feel more competent and confident living in Torino being able to carry a basic conversation with locals,” said Pagano. And Pagano was determined to leave Italy in December with an ability to communicate effectively in Italian. “I feel like I know a lot of Italian, but at the same time I know there is so much more out there,” said Pagano. “But every time an Italian can tell I’m American and speaks to me in English and I reply in Italian, I feel extra victorious!” The Italian Cuisine class has taught her far more
SandpointLivingLocal.com
92
than learning how to cook authentic Italian dishes; it has given her a glimpse into where the Italian culture’s passion lies. “Implementing the Italian Cuisine class to my studies has given me an appreciation of what it truly means to be Italian. When you visit an area and eat the food, you don’t fully understand the time and effort and generations of recipes that it takes to bring that food to your table,” said Pagano. “Learning different techniques and recipes and prep courses to make a full Italian meal has not only helped me understand the culture, but has made me fall in love with Italy even more.” As she comes to the end of her four-month adventure, Pagano said she would do it again in a heartbeat. Not only was it a chance to learn about another culture, but the experience has changed her in ways difficult to describe. “If you told me I could start again tomorrow, I would without a second thought. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I can tell how much I’ve grown and changed, and I’m excited to get back home and implement what I’ve learned into my daily life in America.”
