THE OPPONENT THROUGH THE EYES OF AN EMAD

W

hile the Post Falls Trojans have not made it to state in the past 8 years, don’t let that fool you. Finishing with 6 wins and 3 losses last season, their record over the last three seasons reflects twice as many wins as losses with some of those wins posted against some of the top ranking teams. A 5A school, Post Falls is in the same league as what some view as the unstoppable Coeur d’Alene Vikings and Lake City. “They were 1-2 in 5A Inland Empire League play,” said Sandpoint’s offensive line coach Crosby Tajan referring to Post Falls. Last week the Post Falls Trojans lost their season opener in a 27-17 loss to Washington team Graham-Kapowsin High School. Look to quarterback Joey Pfennigs, a 6 foot 165 lb. junior, to be a key player during this 2012 season. Pfennigs was the Inland Empire League’s Offensive Newcomer of the Year last year. Although the defense is young, the players attended a summer football camp where Coach Jeff Hinz said he saw a lot of them stand out.

Coach Hinz is in his eight season and boasts a winning overall record of 34-29. His defensive coordinator will be familiar to Bulldog fans. Coach Sean Dorris served as the defensive coordinator under Coach Puailoa in 2003 and took over as Sandpoint’s Head Coach for the 2004 and 2005 seasons after Coach Puailoa retired. “Coach Dorris has worked with most of the Varsity staff here at Sandpoint and has inside knowledge,” said Tajan. In addition to Pfennigs, Tajan said other key players in this week’s matchup include players on the offensive and defensive lines including C.J. Miller, Cameron Bradley, Chase Niles, Micah Saless and Matt Kirby. He adds other key players include newcomers Mason Lickfold, Patrick Agueros and Braden Davenport. Bulldog Assistant Coach Chris Lassen says he believes the Post Falls Trojans will throw the ball more than run it. They run a 4-3 defense and a shotgun offense, or some version of the quarterback not being under the center.” said Lassen. According to Lassen, Post Falls has an experienced coaching staff that has been pretty successful. The players are also a good size and Lassen expects to see a lot of hard hits as the Trojans take on Sandpoint. Tajan said to expect both teams to come well prepared. “There will be no surprises for either team,” said Tajan. “It’s just line up and see who wants it more.”

Senior Spotlight

J

By Patty Hutchens

osh Loutzenhiser Senior Josh Loutzenhiser plays defensive tackle for the Sandpoint Bulldogs and has been playing football since he was in fifth grade. He was born in Provo, UT and moved to Sandpoint when he was just two years old. He loves the camaraderie that this year’s team has already developed and said he really looks forward to working with this year’s coaching staff. “They’ve been down this road before and I’ve learned a lot from them already,” said Loutzenhiser. He credits the coaches with creating a family atmosphere among the team and says they are like one big family; he refers to his teammates as his brothers. When not in school or playing football, he enjoys paint ball, hanging out with his friends as well as hunting and fishing. He is also on Sandpoint High School’s track team where he throws shot-put and discus. This will be Josh’s fourth year on the track team. He enjoys basketball, but said he only does that for fun and does not play competitively. An honor roll student with a 3.4 GPA, Josh said he looks forward to graduation and possibly traveling to Alaska next summer to hunt and fish. He would like to try and get a football scholarship, but if that does not happen he will still plan to attend college, but he has yet to decide where that will be. Until that time he will savor every moment of this year. “It’s going to be an amazing season,” said Josh. His advice to younger players is simple: “Work hard at everything you do. Do not take breaks during the off season.”

P

ete Slippy Senior Pete Slippy began playing football in the fourth grade. He played flag football for three years and started tackle football in the seventh grade. This year he can be found at defensive nose guard for the Sandpoint Bulldogs. When asked what he is looking forward to the most this year he replied “The championship ring.” Pete, who moved to Sandpoint from Middleton, Idaho when he was 7, does online school and although he does not attend classes with the rest of the team, he has become an integral part of the Bulldog family and has enjoyed the extra time that online school can provide. “I get a lot of snowboarding time” he said. In addition to football and snowboarding, Pete also enjoys hanging out with his friends. Another favorite pastime is music. Pete plays bass guitar for his church and is in a band with some of his friends. Another sport he enjoys is basketball. He used to play and although he gave it up for a time, he is considering playing again this year. His dream is to play football for the University of Idaho. His brother, Tim, is a freshman at the University of Idaho this year and his parents, cousins, uncle and grandfather all attended the school. He said playing football this fall will be the highlight of his senior year. “I am looking forward to a fantastic season,” said Pete. He says the younger kids in the football program need to realize that the future is now “They need to work hard now so they can get the recognition at the varsity level. It (the hard work) pays off.”

T

ravis Smith Senior Travis Smith loves football. He has played it his whole life. But when he did not feel he was getting everything he could from the game, he chose to not play his sophomore and junior years. That all changed when he heard Coach Puailoa was returning to coach. A defensive end, Travis was born and raised in Sandpoint and was familiar with the legacy of Coach Puailoa and said he was very happy to have him back at the helm. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Coach Puailoa and all the coaches,” said Smith. “I’ve already learned so much and the season is just starting.” He said this season he is looking forward to winning the state championship and most of all working together as a team. In addition to his participation on the Sandpoint High School football team, Travis is also a Sandpoint High School basketball player. He has been on the team since sophomore year. He, like many of his teammates, loves the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and hiking. While he said he is not looking to be a star player at the college level, he would not turn down an opportunity to play if given a scholarship. If not, he said he would most likely attend either Boise State or the University of Idaho. His advice to the underclassmen, especially the freshman football players, is to enjoy every moment of the next four years, “I am a senior now and I wish I could go back and be a freshman again,” said Travis. “High school is your most fun years.”

J

oey Eicher Senior Joey Eicher is playing defensive end this year and after a two year hiatus from the high school football team, he is glad to be back. Eicher played football from third grade through his freshman year until a broken collar bone took him out of the game. He chose not to play the last two years, but when he heard Coach Puailoa was returning as head coach there was no turning back. “Coach Puailoa is the only reason I came back,” said EIcher. Eicher added that he also has a lot of respect for the other coaches, many of whom are no stranger to him. “Coach Ray Miller and Coach Lassen both coached my dad in high school,” said Eicher, a Sandpoint native who adds that his brother also played under Coach Puailoa for two years. He is excited to return to play under the lights and said he especially looks forward to heading to the state championship game. Eicher said he enjoys playing with all his teammates and they have quickly become like one big family. Outside of football, Joey enjoys hunting, fishing and hiking and basically any outdoor activities. After graduation he said he would love to play football anywhere, but his dream would be Boise State or University of Idaho. He said Coach Puailoa has inspired him not only on the field but off as well. When he heard that Puailoa was returning to lead the Sandpoint High School football team, Eicher worked hard to bring his grades up so he could be sure and participate on the team. “I wanted to make sure I was on track,” said Eicher. And he was. For the first time ever Eicher made the honor roll last spring and said his motivation was purely Coach Puailoa. When asked what words of wisdom he could give the younger football players, he said, “Stick with it. Do not quit and work your hardest every day. Listen to the coaches. If you show up you can do it, but remember do not ever give up”

EMADs in the Classroom By Patty Hutchens

C

oach Puailoa’s expectations of his players extend far beyond the four walls of the locker room and the boundaries of a football field. He wants his players to reach their potential in the classroom as well. But he is realistic and knows that to do their best academically, and to find that balance between school work and sports, the athlete often requires help. And he and his coaching staff are willing to do all they can to make sure the kids gain confidence in the classroom, on the football field, and in life. They are already making a difference. A review of the honor roll list from the final quarter of last year reveals 45 kids in grades 10 through 12 from the Bulldog Football Nation who made the list. “I am impressed with the level of academic achievement many of these kids have,” said Coach Puailoa. But it’s not just the students who make the honor roll that have impressed Coach Puailoa; it is the ones who have worked hard and brought their grades up significantly. “When we first took over last spring, we had 25 - 30 kids who were failing 2 or more classes,” said Coach. “At the end of the year I think we were down to two.” He and his coaching staff offer academic counseling with Coach Lassen in charge of monitoring the kids’ grades and making sure they get the help they need if they are struggling. Sophomore Billy Webber has played tackle football since the second grade. He is passionate about the sport and cannot imagine not being able to play. So when Coach Lassen told him last spring that his ability to play for Sandpoint High School hinged on bringing up his grades, he knew he had to get to work. Struggling in english, math and science, Billy worked extremely hard and ended up with scoring 102% on his english final – the extra percentage points due to extra credit he also completed. He studied hard for science and math and also pulled up those grades significantly. He credits both Coach Lassen, who guided him to some of the other kids on the team who could help him, and equipment manager Jarrett Robson with motivating him. “Jarrett knew how much I loved football,” said Billy. “He had a conversation with me and told me I had to pull myself together.” Billy said this year he needs to be much more organized and disciplined from the start when it comes to schoolwork and he knows he will succeed. His advice to others who have trouble academically and want to participate in sports is simple. “Put school first,” he said. Coach Puailoa said it is important to listen to the kids and help them in any way possible. He cites the example of Josh Travers who is a top student but told his coaches he strives for straight A’s.“He told us he had received a B and so he wanted us (the coaching staff) to treat him as we do the kids who may really be struggling,” said Coach Puailoa. Senior brothers Tim and Todd Pays work hard on

their academics and it shows. Both of the young men have a GPA of 4.125 and are signed up for a rigorous class schedule this fall. Both Tim and Todd will be taking Honors Physics, Duel Credit English, AP Government, AP Stats and AP Calculus. Todd said thus far it has not been a struggle to balance it all. “You just have to be on task and work hard,” adds Tim. With their family living off the grid and their father traveling extensively to his job in Los Angeles, the boys are responsible for many of the work on their 20 acres including chopping the 10 cords of wood needed to heat their home during the winter months, shoveling, snow plowing, car and household repairs and taking care of chickens on their farm. With balancing chores, school and football Todd says the key to being successful is to stay organized. “I always put my school work first,” he said. “Never procrastinate! Have a distraction free environment for homework.” As for Tim, he said it is important to stay on task and to make the most of what others may consider free time.“Always have your homework with you so you can work on it in your free time, whether it is waiting for football practice to start or on the bus,” said Tim. “Find someone who is doing well in your class and ask them for help. ”Asking for help is exactly what Nathan Stangel says is also key to success. Nathan is a sophomore and was struggling with math and science during his freshman year. When Coach Lassen told him he may not be able to play unless he brought up his grades, Nathan did not want to disappoint the important people in his life so he did what he needed to do to get the C+ average he said is required to play football. “My biggest motivation was my grandpa,” said Nathan. “He coached with Coach Lassen and I did not want to let him down.” A football player since the 5th grade, Nathan said he also did not want to let his team down. “I reached out to get help from my parents and also went to my teachers whenever I had time,” he said. In the end he had a C+ in science and a B in math. This year he said he plans to be much more organized and says it is important to not be afraid to ask for help. He also credits Coach Lassen for taking the time to help him when he was struggling academically. “No coach has ever done that before,” said Nathan. Senior Joey Eicher said that he was motivated to bring his grades up the minute he heard Coach Puailoa was returning as head coach of the Bulldogs. He was struggling in classes and did what he could do, including online classes, to bring his grades back to where they should be. Now, for the first time ever, he can proudly say he made the honor roll his spring semester of last year. And he said the motivation can be summed up in two words – Coach Puailoa. “Him showing up as head coach is what made that happen,” said Joey.
