heney, which posted a 7 -2 record in 2011 with a 0-1 postseason record, has six starters and 7 lettermen returning for the 2012 season. They come into tonight’s game against the Sandpoint Bulldogs with a 1 -3 record so far this season. Their losses were to East Valley, Lakeland and Pullman and their win a 56-0 shutout against Omak. The team is coached by Jason Williams who has been at the school for 18 years and at the helm for the Cheney Blackhawks varsity team for the past 10. Prior to that, he served as defensive coordinator. Key newcomers include junior Andrew Graham, senior running back and linebacker Cameron Schlotter, junior Kyle Krieger who can be found at guard and tackle, junior Josh Arthur playing tight end, and junior Noah Ziemann who plays center and tackle. The team runs a spread offense and a 4-3 defense. Key players for the Cheney Blackhawks include senior Eric Igbinoba, a wide receiver and running back who, at 6’1” and 180 lbs., is reported to be fast on his feet

The Sandpoint Bulldogs are determined to take the momentum from their win on the road in Timberlake last week, capitalize on the home field advantage and ring the victory bell at Memorial Field tonight. Go Bulldogs!

Senior Spotlight

M

By Patty Hutchens

att lockey Senior Matt Lockey began playing football when he was in the 8th grade in Puyallup, WA. He moved to Sandpoint midway through his sophomore year and is in his second year playing for the Sandpoint Bulldogs. He is a fullback and occasionally plays nose guard as well. He is enjoying this season and said the coaching staff has provided a lot of motivation. “They inspire us and give us hope to achieve better things than we have in the past,” said Matt. In addition to football, Matt Lockey has also wrestled for the past seven years. Coach Puailoa has been his physical education teacher since Matt started at Sandpoint High School and Matt said Coach has helped him to not only become a better football player but has also helped him to improve as a wrestler. After graduation Matt plans to become a firefighter. He will attend a 1 ½ year program at a fire academy in Texas where he will receive a degree in fire science. He said what appeals to him about the profession is his desire to help people. After receiving his fire science degree, Matt said he plans to stay in Texas for a while and one day will return to Sandpoint. When not attending school, playing football or wrestling, Matt said he spends his time studying and playing video games. His advice to younger kids in the program: “Try their hardest and excel to the best of their abilities. . . During every play, sprint your hardest. It will make you much better. Become faster and always finish ahead of what you did previously,”

J

ustin Puryear Justin Puryear is in his sixth year of football in Sandpoint. He can be found playing middle linebacker and is the long snapper for the Sandpoint High School Bulldogs this season. He says he appreciates how disciplined and positive this year’s coaching staff is. “They have a positive outlook on everything,” said Justin. “They are disciplined and are setting us up to become well educated young men.” In addition to football, Justin has participated in baseball for the last 11 years and is also a handball player. He would love to pursue the possibility of playing college football. His current plans are to attend University of Idaho and get his degree in mechanical engineering, which explains why he lists science as his favorite subject in school. In his free time, Justin enjoys skiing in the winter and spending time on beautiful Lake Pend Oreille in the summer. . His advice to the younger players on the team is given after reflection of his high school years, “Do not take a single day for granted because your four years go by in a flash”

ustin Wilkerson Senior Justin Wilkerson has been playing football since he was in the seventh grade. He plays linebacker for the Sandpoint High School Bulldogs, but says he has played several positions over the years including safety, corner back, and running back.

In addition to football, Justin has also played lacrosse since he was in the 8th grade. His hope is to attend the University of Idaho after graduation, and when asked what his favorite subjects are in school he responded with math and science. He would like to work in the medical field and said both dentistry and radiology are areas that interest him. Justin is enjoying the season with the Bulldogs and said that each week his team is improving and said he credits the coaching staff with motivating him and his teammates. “I like how pumped up and enthusiastic they (the coaches) are,” said Justin. “They know their positions and they know what they are doing.” He said the mandatory study hall Coach Puailoa has instituted has been very helpful to many on the team. One benefit is that many of the coaches are also teachers and can provide students with the assistance they need not only on the field but off the field as well. Justin said he used to do a lot of snowboarding and hopes to do that once this football season is over. He is confident that with the team working together, they will continue to improve each game as they have thus far. When asked what piece of advice he would offer to the younger players on the team, it was a message of effort. “When you go on the field, give every play one hundred percent because you don’t ever know what play will be your last.”

D

evon Hancock Senior Devin Hancock has been participating in organized football since he was in the fifth grade. For the Sandpoint Bulldogs, Hancock said he plays nose guard, tackle and fullback. He also is the back up for the defensive end.

This year he is particularly enjoying the enthusiasm the coaching staff brings to the team. “I have been learning a lot,” said Devin. He has also been an avid baseball player throughout the years and was on the wrestling team as a freshman. His post high school plans will likely include attending the University of Idaho where he wants to pursue a degree that will involve computers. But if he were to receive a scholarship to play football at any school, those plans could change. His favorite subject at Sandpoint High School is government. He is currently taking AP Government and AP Statistics so he appreciates the extra time that the mandatory study hall provides to complete home work. In his spare time, Devin said he enjoys hanging out with his friends, snowboarding, and any activity that brings him outdoors. When asked what his advice to younger kids in the football program is, his response is given after careful thought. “Make every moment in life count and do not let a single day go by without improving yourself in some way,”
