1. What is contemporary photography?

With the new age came a slightly different definition of photography – certain categories derived from mixing two or more genres into one. Not every photo taken today is modern. Each time has its own modern photography, created in dialogue with the times, the historical context of contemporary culture. Contemporary Photography is always created in the context of today, responds to the context or comment on it and reflect. These studies raise topics as: daily, people and society, environmental change, migration, globalization, media, society, etc. Contemporary Photography is a reference to modern culture. With modern philosophy, it is committed to interdisciplinary and intercultural cooperation with other cultural areas. «Contemporary» - means to be with the time! Contemporary Photography is a look at the picture from the point of view of modern art and contemporary art - it is the most representative practices of culture. Modern photography is a photograph taken in a certain time period and in a particular artistic style. It can be called whatever you like and where you like, and it can be overgrown by whatever details and fantasies, but it will be a modern photograph with respect to the present time, in which there is or there was its author, who worked in a certain style and direction in art, guided by culture tastes and predilections. It is an object that exists in the present time we have is a picture may change in the spirit of trend and the mood. You can take a picture in the style of “retro”, but it will be a modern picture in the style of “retro”. Tendency is always changing. Photo may be banal and outdated, again over time. But then again, after this time will change and tendency change. Conclusion: Contemporary Photography is a photograph showing the time in which it exists, guided by tastes and preferences within a given culture. Contemporary Photography can decide conceptual, interdisciplinary and crosscultural issues in the same project, and even in a single photo. Solves the important issues of contemporary art acts as a Media Modern Art. Created in today’s context, in dialogue with the times, the historical context of contemporary culture, raises issues of relevance to society right now. Responds to its context or its comments (reflection). Studying the nature of the photos, itself, laws of its functioning and interaction with the audience. Can be in dialogue with art history, history of photography, intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogue with the adjacent cultural and scientific fields. Used photographic language, expired in the culture today. It is not engaged in the reproduction of the beauty of the world, without any reason for it.

2. What is photorealistic render?

“Rendering has uses in architecture, video games, simulators, movie or TV visual effects, and design visualization, each employing a different balance of features and techniques. As a product, a wide variety of renderers are available. Some are integrated into larger modeling and animation packages, some are stand-alone, some are free open-source projects. On the inside, a renderer is a carefully engineered program, based on a selective mixture of disciplines related to: light physics, visual perception, mathematics, and software development�1. Industrial rendering is a fundamental component for manufacturers of machine tools, industrial equipment and transportation. From CAD files created by designers, will be achieved an evaluation tool that will constitute important photorealistic rendering in terms of Visual impact so that you can make edits to your project in case of negative considerations, or determine the environmental impact of the project by placing a 3D model into your existing environment through lighting design. In Automotive rendering plays a role of paramount importance. Clearly emotional effectiveness a rendering can offer, especially in terms of creative concept, marketing strategy and advance sale. In my way of seeing the rendering has the same meaning and function of each other representational technique. The purpose of an image, regardless of the technique used, is not limited in its technical but what it evokes in the viewer. And this is true for extreme photorealistic representations and representations which of photorealistic have very little. What is it, a photographic render or realistic photo? One thing is real perception that we receive from our eyes and else is a photograph. If you think about it a moment, the view and the photos are two completely different things. So what they imitate with photorealistic render? Reality or photography? Of course the photograph, taking from it the problems, styles, endless possibilities for compositions, lighting... Personally I am not against of the use of these technologies, it is a useful tool in the design field, but the question arises when these images are being confused with reality. After quality of render increased, now it is nearly imperceptible, there is always a doubt, what we seeing it really exists or only result of the creativity of designer, generated from 3D programs, presenting idea for the future project? When I find that it is a rendering, immediately follows other question, if this represented object has been realized or remained a digital file? I am searching for a picture taken from real objekt and often I can not find it, and here I perceive the illusion. In my opinion the rendering phenomenon creates a feeling that everything is can be easily produce with modern technology, but those projects are really producible?

3. Visual culture. Seeing is a great deal more than believing these days. Nicholas Mirzoeff More than one hundred fifty years of “analogical” photography have given us the certainty that the shooting scene in each image was what the photographer saw through his own photographic lens. With digital photography this concept radically changed. Although the rule continues to be to impress on media scene we have before our eyes, we can not be sure that the photographs printed in newspapers or seen on the screen of a computer are the some evidence of the presence of the photographer on the theatre of events, behind a bulleted lens at the subject, because the picture can be the result of pure invention and / or the reworking of other images or entirely created on computer. The digital photo not assumes a testimonial value, the image can be completely a fiction with significant social consequences. With invention of 3D programs is possible create an image that looks like a photograph and is indistinguishable from it: but is only mimesis of photography is sophisticated computing and digital generated image, that I can not call a photo. Totally produced on computer, synthetic images, pure invention, are not made by reality, are the result of processing graphics programs they can not narrate the true story. In computer graphics, photorealistic rendering attempts to make artificial images of simulated 3d environments that look “just like the real world.” I am seeing some images and I no longer sure if I see a photograth or CGI(Computer-generated imagery)? Often we think of images made on computer when we see aliens or dinosaurs because we know that they do not exist, nowadays it is possible realize any scene, no one would suspect authenticity. In a society increasingly dependent on Internet, television, in the media, constantly hit by a bombardment of images, sounds, colors and information, in fact the only way to affect immediately is innovation. La chance to actualize the projects in pictures ( often pumped into the lights and colors) fits perfectly into this logic of wonder. Architects, designers consistently improve the quality of photorealistic render until to have an image that seems reality. Confine between real and virtual in the age of the Internet and new digital technologies, along together and exclusively all stages of the process of creating a rendering: from conception of the abstract idea to the final result. Where fantasy and reality blend into one truly amazing. There are countless renders disclosed in Internet (those beautiful colored images with which they will show how things can appear) of 3D made urban projects involving big names of architecture, just to name one most known Zaha Hadid, to understand what we speak about. Renders often too perfect to be true (or vice versa, as the real flowers that seem fake or fake ones appearing real). These new programs make it possible to imagine, create and design any form with a simple click, using series of algorithms and mathematical formulas. Modern materials (concrete, steel, glass, metals), they let you in complete form realize these architectural fantasies. Spectacular, amazing, exciting, almost sublime, that arouses fear, but also amazement. The architecture at the end should do this too, surprising. 3


4. Art of rendering.

Computer generated imagery is no longer an intermediary between an idea and its realization, but a finished product on its own. Different rendering genres have emerged over the years, with different style, similar in approach, they emerge new concepts as 3D art and 3D artist. Humans had stopped drawing landscapes and portraits when the streets of photography were open and now artists spend hours to make a flower on computer, when you can simply take a picture of it. What the reason for doing this? Demonstrate skills to use the software? I see no other motivation, to copy the nature is not an act of creativity. Right now this industry is still a very technical one, and many people have built businesses on the fact that they are masters of 3D softwares. The most successful currently are those who have mastered both the technical and the artistic side, but I would pose this question to everyone: When the technologies and workflows evolve to a point where we have perfect photorealistic render and the technical skills required are insignificant, what will be their development? For some this will allow them to do what they do best, be artists. For others, I fear this might be their undoing in the industry if they don’t evolve. These changes are coming sooner than later. I did a small survey using this quiz1 among designers and ordinary PC users, for both it was difficult to differentiate photo from the rendering.

A few years ago we started to buy things on the Internet looking at pictures, in most of cases the products looks more beautiful on the screen, when we receiving the goods come disappointment, the texture or color does not correspond to the image on Web, are we really ready for online shopping confide in the photorealistic render? Furniture superstore IKEA produces more than 208 million catalogs a year, and over 12% of those photographs are not even photographs at all. IKEA has found a way to produce compelling digital renders of their rooms that look exactly like naturally lit photographs. Open the catalog and see that splendid kitchen which, incidentally, would be fine at your house. Or even the living room: simply divine. Perfect too. And you wonder, but those IKEA, how do they create environments so perfect? How long it takes to assemble and disassemble whenever kitchens, living rooms, closets and other furnishings? The answer to these two questions is rendering. Simply, the rooms that seem so perfect and, above all, so real, were made piece by piece to the computer through graphics programs and digital rendering. Imagine a real photo studio, tuning light, workers who move furniture and a lot of equipment, though is much easier to move wardrobe with computer mouse, a huge saving energy, time, and other advantages. In the image below IKEA’s catalog. IKEA increases their computer renders to over 25% in the next year, it makes me wonder, will there still be photography jobs for the big furniture and design companies in the future?

Martin Enthed and his team work in one of the many IKEA companies: “We have a manager Annelie Sjögren, and she decided that all the 3D artists had to learn photography, and all the photographers had to learn to be 3D artists. There was a very intensive period of training where the entire photography team met with V-Ray gurus over in Bulgaria and came back with a number of tasks to complete - more 3D pieces to create. And for the 3D artists, it was the opposite way around. They were trained in photography in the studio. This process is absolutely what made for an increase in quality - both in 3D AND photography. Actually now some of our photographers have completely “gone over” - they’ve become 3D artists. And some of our 3D artists have abandoned their computers and become photographers! There’s been a real merge. It’s been astonishing, really.” With the advent of high-quality rendering we do not notice what is real and what is fake, although all advertising on the screens on street posters, catalogs, they quietly filled our lives and we do not even feel the change. Now than ever I appreciate an old analog camera, it is the only photograth that will represent the reality and the certainty that has not been retouched. In computer generated images I see only the synthetic renders. 3D artist working hard to be able also put in clouds of pixels human skin and make texture of it, they achieved good results in the image, but not in the video, I hope it will be never possible to convey emotions in 3D represented persons and this renders remains only in video games ...
