reminder: take care of yourself.

Hello Key Clubbers! I hope you guys are doing well and getting adjusted to the school year. I sent out my first monthly update email for the month of September that included a ton of valuable information. It had a link to my new divisional GroupMe, which all officers and faculty advisors are highly encouraged to join. I will be sending out reminders and other important information in the GroupMe. My main goal for the upcoming month is to visit at least one of the clubs within my division and start a divisional Instagram. I look forward to seeing what October holds for everyone! Yours in service, Lilian Thai

Letter from the LTG

National Suicide Prevention Month September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for young people. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that one in four young adults say they've considered suicide in the past month because of the pandemic. We can all help prevent suicide.

Do's listen empathetically get involved and show interest check in on your loved ones be non-judgmental help those who are suicidal find meaning and hope in their life support and uplift others

Don'ts

dare them to do it accuse them of seeking attention make them prove how much they're suffering invalidate their feelings criticize and shame them for how they cope and deal with their emotions guilt trip them into them thinking they are ungrateful

Update on Dues What are dues for? Payment of dues to Key Club International is a requirement for a student to be considered a Key Club member. Your club's participation in paying dues helps Key Club continue to give members a place to develop leadership through service. As a due paying member of Key Club International, you can qualify for scholarships, attend District Convention, run for officer positions, and earn member lapel pins. How to pay dues:

3

Due to the pandemic, collecting dues this year will definitely be interesting. Here are a few ideas of ways you can collect dues this year: Drive-through due payments (set up a drivethrough at your school where members can go and drop off their payment) PayPal or online payment system (if school allows) Mail in checksÂ

Guidelines for Dues When paying dues, there are certain limits and rules to abide by. The Early Bird due date is November 1st, and the Regular Dues deadline is December 1st. Dues must include $7 for international and $6 for the district. Paying one due over the other is not allowed as they are processed both for district and international. It is optional for clubs to require personal club dues. Total dues for members cannot exceed $20. Dues do not include T-shirt payment. There are also rules for collecting dues. In Texas, minors may not ever touch due money, so sponsors will have to be the ones to handle money. This year only, your club will not be revoked if you do not pay dues, however no one in your club can run for a district position or attend LEDCON. When handling money, you must have at least 2 members present in order to discourage pocketing and increase organization

DIVISIONAL PROJECT

Clean and Care for the

Community

7

The Divisional Project decides the theme for the division's service projects, chosen by the LTG every year. It is different from the Governor and District Projects. For my divisional project this year, I decided to focus on the environment. Good planets are hard to find, so we have to take care of the one we have. You can make a positive impact on the Earth by taking care of your local environment and community..

Service Ideas: Start a community garden Pick up trash in your community Clean a local lake

Key Club Thirst Project hopes to educate the next generation by arming students with information about how they can be a part of social change, make a difference and encourage others to join in the effort.

Landscape Structures (LSI) has joined Kiwanis International as a vision partner to bring play to communities across the globe. LSI is proud to provide high-quality commercial playground equipment and planning consultation services that reflect the high degree of integrity that Kiwanis clubs expect. Up with People strives to develop a sense of social responsibility in their participants through hands on community service. Service projects are integrated into each city visited during the semester. By volunteering to meet the specific needs of each community, participants develop insight into how different cultures address social and political challenges.

Preferred Charities and Collaborative Partners Members work together by sponsoring fundraising events and conducting service projects at their local children’s hospitals. Contact your local CMN hospital and invite a representative to a club meeting to share ideas and create a partnership.

Since the 1940s, Key Clubs have worked with March of Dimes to make a positive impact in the lives of babies everywhere. Today, Kiwanis members continue that culture of service by supporting the March of Dimes all year long by hosting service projects, raising funds and educating communities about the crisis of preterm birth. UNICEF is the only organization of the United Nations dedicated exclusively to children. Working with other United Nations bodies, governments and non-governmental organizations, UNICEF helps to provide for children’s needs in more than 150 developing countries through communitybased services in primary health care, basic education and safe water and sanitation.

K Corps is Kiwanis International’s youth exchange program for Key Clubbers. It’s a great opportunity to experience a unique culture, provide service, make lifelong friends, and see spectacular sights half a world away! Participants are hosted by Japanese families, and scholarship opportunities are available.
