June 27, 2010 Honourable Rick Bartolucci Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services Unit 302 93 Cedar Street Sudbury, Ontario P3E 1A7 Dear Mr. Bartolucci, Community safety comes in many forms. Having designated bike lanes is one way to improve community safety. But Greater Sudbury has a poor record for safety when it comes to cycling, primarily due to the lack of cycling infrastructure. This lack of forethought for the safety of cyclists is especially seen when new roads are built or reconstructed. Bike lanes are mostly non-‐existent and curb lanes are narrower than any other lanes, giving cyclist little measure of safety. Over 350 cyclists are sent to hospital each year in Greater Sudbury due to injuries. 2009 saw the death of a cyclist in Greater Sudbury. The message this city is sending to cyclists is clear -‐ don’t ride a bike but if you do, suffer the dangerous consequences. I urge you to work toward passing the Three Feet Passing Law tabled in May 2010 as a Private Member’s bill to improve the safety of cyclists in Greater Sudbury and across Ontario. Sincerely, Lilly Noble Co-‐Chair, Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury 8 Neptune Ave. Sudbury, Ontario P3E 5Z4 Cc: Cheri DeNovo, MPP, Parkdale-‐High Park Eleanor McMahon, Share the Road
