NCIIA The National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) is proud to present Open Minds 2013, a showcase of outstanding student E-Teams and their emerging startups. Each of these teams is working to bring inventive new technologies to impact through commercialization. As you visit the teams you’ll see prototypes of inventions and innovations on their way to making a difference in the world, many of which are being revealed to the public for the first time. The exhibiting team members are here to showcase and demonstrate their ideas. Your questions are encouraged! NCIIA is delighted to partner with The Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in hosting this year’s Open Minds exhibition. We are grateful to our principal sponsor The Lemelson Foundation, whose generous support of invention, technology innovation and entrepreneurship in higher education enables these inventors to realize their vision.

The Lemelson Foundation

The NCIIA supports technology innovation and entrepreneurship in universities and colleges to create experiential learning opportunities for students and successful, socially beneficial businesses. The NCIIA provides grants, entrepreneurship and venture training labs, mentoring, investment advice, and other resources to faculty and students. With a membership of nearly 200 colleges and universities from across the United States, the NCIIA engages more than 5,000 students each year, leveraging their respective campuses as working laboratories and incubators, ultimately helping them to bring their inventions to commercialization.

The Lemelson Foundation uses the power of invention to improve lives, by inspiring and enabling the next generation of inventors and invention-based enterprises in order to build a stronger US economy and create social and economic change for the poor in developing countries. Founded in the 1990’s by prolific independent US inventor Jerome Lemelson and his wife Dorothy, the Foundation works to ensure a robust pipeline of inventors, inventions and invention-based enterprises. Additionally, the Foundation works to strengthen the ecosystem that cultivates inventors while also helping them to translate their ideas to inventions with impact. Within the geographies of their work, the US and developing countries, the Foundation supports programs that inspire youth to become inventors,

The Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center

National Museum of American History

The Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation’s activities advance scholarship on the history of invention, share stories about inventors and their work and nurture creativity in young people. The Center embodies a philosophy akin to that of the inventors we study, of valuing creativity and embracing the potential rewards of intellectual risk-taking. The Center is located at the National Museum of American History and supported by The Lemelson Foundation, a private philanthropy established by one of the country’s most prolific inventors, Jerome Lemelson, and his family. Places of Invention, a 3,500 squarefoot exhibition exploring hot spots of invention from the mid-19th century to the present, and Spark!Lab, a hands-on invention workshop, are scheduled to open at the Museum in 2015. For more information on the Lemelson Center, visit invention.smithsonian.org.

The National Museum of American History collections include many significant inventions, including Edison’s phonographs, a portion of Bell’s original telephone and a Jobs and Wozniak Apple I computer. Museum artifacts also include approximately 10,000 patent models—one of the most comprehensive collections in any public institution. The museum’s Archives Center contains materials that complement the artifacts and support the study of many different aspects of American life. Important invention-related collections include the George H. Clark “Radioana” collection related to the industrial development of the radio and the Earl S.Tupper papers describing the invention and marketing of Tupperware. Through the Lemelson Center’s support, the Archives Center has increased its

collections of personal papers and business records documenting the history of American enterprise, innovation and technology. The National Museum of American History collects, preserves and displays American heritage in the areas of social, political, cultural, scientific and military history. The museum is currently renovating its west exhibition wing with new galleries on American business, democracy and culture; new spaces for the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation; and a Hall of Music for live performances. The museum is located at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue N.W., and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (closed Dec. 25). Admission is free. http://americanhistory.si.edu.
