Homebook Homebook Part II Information About The Area

Prepared by Lilo Carroll, CRP, CRS, e-PRO, GRI, RFC, RRC ERA Colonial Real Estate

Homebook Homebook General Facts about the Area The romantic legendary West is very much a part of Killeen’s history and of its character today. But only a part…. On May 15, 1882, a Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Train chugged into a stretch of land in West Bell County, then populated with only a smattering of buildings. The arrival of that train marked the birth of Killeen. Named for a railroad official, Frank P. Killeen, the young town did not take long to put down roots and begin to grow. In a few short years, Killeen had become one of the state’s leading shipping centers for cotton, wool, and other produce. Outlaws Sam Bass, John Wesley Hardin, and Jesse James all traveled the road just south of Killeen that is now known simply as Texas Highway 195. In September 1942, Camp Hood was located just next door to the growing Killeen, and the huge Army post took in much of the agricultural lands, which fed the city’s economy. A new economic base established, as Camp Hood, eventually became Fort Hood in 1950 and grew into the largest military post in the free world.

Homebook Homebook

WELCOME TO FORT HOOD!! WHERE IS FORT HOOD?? It’s the largest armored military installation in the nation, and the Army’s best kept secret! Covering 339 square miles, Fort Hood has been a permanent post since 1950. Named after the famous Confederate General John Bell Hood, it is now home to III Corps, training and supporting two divisions and over ten tenant organizations. Located in the “Heart of Texas”, just to the west of the IH-35 north/south corridor, Fort Hood is equidistant to Waco and Dallas to the north and Austin and San Antonio to the south (about 50 and 125 miles each respectively).

CLIMATE - Our weather is beautiful, for the most part. We do have a definite summer, with temperatures in the high 90’s (above 100 occasionally), but it is tolerable because the humidity level is low and we normally enjoy a breeze. Spring and fall are very pleasant, requiring neither heat nor air conditioning. We do have a few nights during the winter when temperatures drop below the freezing mark, and it snows every two to three years (the kids love it, as all schools will close).

Homebook Homebook LOCATION – Killeen, Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove surround Fort Hood and are located just at the fringe of the famed “Hill Country”, preserving their small town atmosphere yet offering most of the big city conveniences. The cost of living is quite reasonable. Utilities are very economical and gasoline is probably cheaper than most parts of the country. Property taxes are conservative (see enclosure), no state income tax, but an 8.25% sales tax. GREENERY - which we have, regardless of what you may have heard or are anticipating. The countryside is picturesque, with rolling terrain, and abundance of wild flowers, and numerous lakes, rivers, and tributaries adding to the beauty and open feeling. COMMUNITY - the tri-city area is not your typical Texas settlement. The combined population is almost cosmopolitan; most of the residents are widely traveled (due to the military influence) bringing with them a broad range of experiences and tastes. SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES - The local school system is widely recognized as one of the best in the state. Its innovation has originated and developed many ideas and programs that are now used statewide. Programs of instruction offered to students of all ages are comprehensive, challenging, and diverse. The Killeen community has approximately 90 churches representing over 20 different religious denominations. You are likely to find the one you are looking for close to your home. HIGHER EDUCATION – American Preparatory Institute, and Central Texas College are located between Killeen and Copperas Cove, adjoining Fort Hood. Texas A & M University Central Texas’ newly operational campus is situated at 1902 S. Clear Creek Road, at the intersection with Hwy 195. 15 miles to the east finds Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, while UT in Austin and Baylor in Waco are equidistant to the south and north respectively. HEALTH CARE – Metroplex Hospital, Seton Medical Center Harker Heights, Scott & White Urgency Care, & several clinics provide medical care to all citizens. Darnall Army Medical Center serves the military component of our community.

Homebook Homebook SHOPPING – Killeen boasts a spacious mall with over 100 shops, specialty stores, restaurants, and beauty shops. Several strip shopping centers (to include chains as Super WalMart) cater to all price ranges and preferences. Market Heights, the newest area shopping center, is located in Harker Heights, and includes Barnes & Noble, Old Navy, Petco, Target; Bed, Bath & Beyond, and many more.

WHERE CAN YOU GO FROM HERE? – Lots of places, and they are not far from here! Austin, the capital of Texas, is barely an hour’s drive away; Waco hosts the Texas Ranger’s museum, San Antonio offers the Alamo and River Walk, and “Shamu”; Dallas has Six Flags Over Texas; Houston boasts NASA; and Corpus Christie and Galveston have the beaches. The Texas “hill country” offers an abundance of sightseeing all around us.

WHAT ELSE CAN WE SAY? – We have culture! Vive Les Arts Societe, founded in 1976, continues to develop and promote cultural activities in the Greater Fort Hood area. In 1991 the Societe opened a center for the performing arts, which features a 400-seat theater and a combination gallery/reception area.

Homebook Homebook Belton Experience the Chisholm Trail In 1850, during a town meeting under an Oak tree now named “Charter Oak”, Belton was voted the county seat of Bell County. Belton was originally named Nolanville after an infamous soldier of fortune. In 1852 the Postmaster decided that it was an inappropriate name and coined the name Belton from Bell and town. Strangely, the written complaints and petitions never reached the state capital and the name Belton remained in place. Belton has such a rich history as demonstrated by the Belton Business Historical District, which is registered with the National Historical Society and features buildings constructed of locally quarried limestone from 1860-1890. Belton is also home to only of less than 300 Carnegie-funded libraries in the United States, built in 1904. One of the oldest universities in Texas, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, was moved to Belton in 1884. Nestled between Stillhouse Hollow and Belton lakes and boasting over 18,000 surface acres between them, Belton offers limitless water sports to include fishing, boating, and water skiing. Other outdoor recreation includes hiking in the 62-acre Heritage Park or playing golf in one of Belton’s two private or municipal golf courses. The introduction of “Camp” Hood, only 18-miles away, forever changed the face of Belton. While holding on to its roots as an agricultural community, Belton has become a diverse industrial and educational city and looks forward to new and exciting transitions that the future will bring. COMMUNITY FEST: Lake Belton Outdoor Recreational area is the scene of a spectacular lake festival the last weekend in May. The event is sponsored by Fort Hood and is open to the public. The weekend includes carnivals, food, bands, water slides, and skydivers, just to name a few

Homebook Homebook Copperas Cove The Foothills of Hill Country A city with a proud heritage and bright future, Copperas Cove is dedicated to improving the quality of life for its citizens. Rolling terrain, studded with native Cedars and Live Oaks, provide prime locations for numerous neighborhoods, which have been developed recently. Many homes offer eye-catching views of the surrounding hill country, or may be overlooking the golf course! Rural living is also very much available. Several developments surrounding the city boast homes with acreage. Wild turkey, deer armadillos, and roadrunners are a common sight, and combine with large oaks, mesquite, sage, and cacti to form a picturesque scene of country living just a short distance away from the heart of Copperas Cove. Recreation is bountiful here: a city park, with meandering creeks running through the tree shaded grounds,; a picnic area; swimming pool; tennis court; and plenty of room for baseball games, soccer, or just enjoying a lazy afternoon. Copperas Cove is a flourishing city with much to offer its residents.

The Home of Fort Hood Killeen is situated in western Bell County, about equidistance between Waco and Austin. It was named after Frank P. Killeen, the assistant general manager of Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway, which platted this 70-block town. Within a year Killeen boasted a railroad depot, several stores, a saloon, and a school. Killeen soon became an important shipping point, and continued to expand; by 1931 there were 1260 residents. During the depression federal funds constructed Highway 190 through the area, a project which provided jobs and sustenance during this time of economic hardship. In 1942 Camp Hood was created to serve as a military training base; it was re-commissioned as Fort Hood in 1950, and Killeen’s prosperity soon became dependent on the military presence. In 1955 Killeen’s population numbered approximately 21,076. Increased activity at Fort Hood, coupled with military personnel, separating from the military and choosing to remain here, contributed to the town’s continued growth to its present 100,000+ residents. Killeen is set in the foothills of the Central Texas hill country, a picturesque vista with close proximity to two beautiful lakes. One will find ample opportunities for fun and relaxation, and a vast array of activities ranging from rodeo to cultural trips, and a wide selection of shopping and dining facilities

Homebook Homebook Nolanville A Place in the Rolling Hills of Cedar Forests This town is a small and unique community, with a population of about 2,500, resting in the rolling hills of cedar forests of the Central Texas region. Nolanville reached its peak as a town between 1890 and 1900 when it went into a holding pattern. Yet, this small town experienced everything; from ice cream to a railroad. Nolanville is situated in the middle of many activities. With access to the major highway arteries, like U.S. Hwy 190 and I-35, this town is a great starting point for any interest. Everything from art and cultural activities to camping and roughing it are available in and around Nolanville. Other interests include scenic lakes, state parks, area museums, and sports.

Homebook Homebook Salado A Step Back In Time Salado was founded in 1859, coincident with the founding of Salado College, at the Chisholm Trail crossing Salado Creek. The tree-shaded banks of the creek had been a favorite resting place for local Indian tribes, and later on for road-weary travelers on the stage lines that served Central Texas. Salado College attracted residents and gave an aura of prestige to the village. A wire cable suspension bridge was built in 1869 and stood until the great flood of 1900. The village of Salado underwent revitalization in the 1940’s and has continued to flourish with the founding of the Central Texas Area Museum in 1959, Mill Creek in 1960, and the spreading fame of the Stagecoach Inn, where Jesse James was a frequent visitor. Salado presently features a bevy of art galleries, antique and other shops catering to visitors, as well as a number of first-rate restaurants. The village attracts tourists’ throughout the year, but especially during the famed Salado Art Fair in August, the gathering of the Scottish Clans in November, and the Country Christmas Stroll in December.

Homebook Homebook Temple Industry Leader and Equidistant from Dallas to Austin In 1881, Jonathan Ewing Moore sold 181 acres of farmland to the Santa Fe Railway Company, who needed to establish a town at a major junction point to service railroad passengers and equipment. The Santa Fe scheduled a land auction for June 29, 1881, and railroad trains arrived with prospective land buyers. Temple was named after Bernard Moore Temple, the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway Chief Engineer who built the tracks through Bell County. By 1897, four railway lines were established in Temple carrying passengers to and from the city. By 1908, Temple was on its way to becoming an important city for commerce, railroads, and medicine. In 1942, construction began on McCloskey General Hospital to care for soldiers wounded in World War II. From its humble beginnings the city has become a strong community based on medical care, agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation. Temple enjoys an economic environment that offers many advantages to investors, businesses, and industry. Scott and White Memorial Hospital and Clinic is the largest employer in Temple, while the Olin E. Teague Veteran’s Center is a major government employer. Fort Hood, located 23-miles to the south/ west is the largest military base in the free world with 43,000 military personnel assigned. Temple has experience much growth in the past several years to include a new Shopping Center Complex, Starbucks Coffee Shop, and a 12-screen movie theater located at Colonial Mall.
