Home Homebook book General Facts about the Area The romantic legendary West is very much a part of Killeen’s history and of its character today. But only a part…. On May 15, 1882, a Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Train chugged into a stretch of land in West Bell County, then populated with only a smattering of buildings. The arrival of that train marked the birth of Killeen. Named for a railroad official, Frank P. Killeen, the young town did not take long to put down roots and begin to grow. In a few short years, Killeen had become one of the state’s leading shipping centers for cotton, wool, and other produce. Outlaws Sam Bass, John Wesley Hardin, and Jesse James all traveled the road just south of Killeen that is now known simply as Texas Highway 195. In September 1942, Camp Hood was located just next door to the growing Killeen, and the huge Army post took in much of the agricultural lands, which fed the city’s economy. A new economic base established, as Camp Hood, eventually became Fort Hood in 1950 and grew into the largest military post in the free world.

Home Homebook book

WELCOME TO FORT HOOD!! WHERE IS FORT HOOD?? It’s the largest armored military installation in the nation, and the Army’s best kept secret! Covering 339 square miles, Fort Hood has been a permanent post since 1950. Named after the famous Confederate General John Bell Hood, it is now home to III Corps, training and supporting two divisions and over ten tenant organizations. Located in the “Heart of Texas”, just to the west of the IH-35 north/south corridor, Fort Hood is equidistant to Waco and Dallas to the north and Austin and San Antonio to the south (about 50 and 125 miles each respectively).

CLIMATE - Our weather is beautiful, for the most part. We do have a definite summer, with temperatures in the high 90’s (above 100 occasionally), but it is tolerable because the humidity level is low and we normally enjoy a breeze. Spring and fall are very pleasant, requiring neither heat nor air conditioning. We do have a few nights during the winter when temperatures drop below the freezing mark, and it snows every two to three years (the kids love it, as all schools will close).

Home Homebook book LOCATION – Killeen, Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove surround Fort Hood and are located just at the fringe of the famed “Hill Country”, preserving their small town atmosphere yet offering most of the big city conveniences. The cost of living is quite reasonable. Utilities are very economical and gasoline is probably cheaper than most parts of the country. Property taxes are conservative (see enclosure), no state income tax, but an 8.25% sales tax. GREENERY - which we have, regardless of what you may have heard or are anticipating. The countryside is picturesque, with rolling terrain, and abundance of wild flowers, and numerous lakes, rivers, and tributaries adding to the beauty and open feeling. COMMUNITY - the tri-city area is not your typical Texas settlement. The combined population is almost cosmopolitan; most of the residents are widely traveled (due to the military influence) bringing with them a broad range of experiences and tastes. SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES - The local school system is widely recognized as one of the best in the state. Its innovation has originated and developed many ideas and programs that are now used statewide. Programs of instruction offered to students of all ages are comprehensive, challenging, and diverse. The Killeen community has approximately 90 churches representing over 20 different religious denominations. You are likely to find the one you are looking for close to your home. HIGHER EDUCATION – American Preparatory Institute, and Central Texas College are located between Killeen and Copperas Cove, adjoining Fort Hood. Texas A & M University Central Texas’ newly operational campus is situated at 1902 S. Clear Creek Road, at the intersection with Hwy 195. 15 miles to the east finds Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, while UT in Austin and Baylor in Waco are equidistant to the south and north respectively. HEALTH CARE – Metroplex Hospital, Seton Medical Center Harker Heights, Scott & White Urgency Care, & several clinics provide medical care to all citizens. Darnall Army Medical Center serves the military component of our community.

Home Homebook book SHOPPING – Killeen boasts a spacious mall with over 100 shops, specialty stores, restaurants, and beauty shops. Several strip shopping centers (to include chains as Super WalMart) cater to all price ranges and preferences. Market Heights, the newest area shopping center, is located in Harker Heights, and includes Barnes & Noble, Old Navy, Petco, Target; Bed, Bath & Beyond, and many more.

WHERE CAN YOU GO FROM HERE? – Lots of places, and they are not far from here! Austin, the capital of Texas, is barely an hour’s drive away; Waco hosts the Texas Ranger’s museum, San Antonio offers the Alamo and River Walk, and “Shamu”; Dallas has Six Flags Over Texas; Houston boasts NASA; and Corpus Christie and Galveston have the beaches. The Texas “hill country” offers an abundance of sightseeing all around us.

WHAT ELSE CAN WE SAY? – We have culture! Vive Les Arts Societe, founded in 1976, continues to develop and promote cultural activities in the Greater Fort Hood area. In 1991 the Société opened a center for the performing arts, which features a 400-seat theater and a combination gallery/reception area.

Home Homebook book

The Home of Fort Hood Killeen is situated in western Bell County, about equidistance between Waco and Austin. It was named after Frank P. Killeen, the assistant general manager of Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway, which platted this 70-block town. Within a year Killeen boasted a railroad depot, several stores, a saloon, and a school. Killeen soon became an important shipping point, and continued to expand; by 1931 there were 1260 residents. During the depression federal funds constructed Highway 190 through the area, a project which provided jobs and sustenance during this time of economic hardship. In 1942 Camp Hood was created to serve as a military training base; it was re-commissioned as Fort Hood in 1950, and Killeen’s prosperity soon became dependent on the military presence. In 1955 Killeen’s population numbered approximately 21,076. Increased activity at Fort Hood, coupled with military personnel, separating from the military and choosing to remain here, contributed to the town’s continued growth to its present 100,000+ residents. Killeen is set in the foothills of the Central Texas hill country, a picturesque vista with close proximity to two beautiful lakes. One will find ample opportunities for fun and relaxation, and a vast array of activities ranging from rodeo to cultural trips, and a wide selection of shopping and dining facilities
