ARE YOU ‘CONTROLLING’ YOUR BUSINESS INTO THE GROUND?
GROWTH REQUIRES ‘LETTING GO’. HERE’S SOME TIPS ON HOW... Adapted by Priscilla Green
Image: Victor1558
SURE YOUR BUSINESS IS THRIVING, HAPPY CUSTOMERS, GREAT INCOME, BUT YOU’RE WORKING 15 HOUR DAYS! IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR BUSINESS OUT OF YOUR HEAD, GET SYSTEMS IN PLACE AND DELEGATE!
Where do you start? Business Systems Are NOT Just For Big Business When you think ‘business systems’ what comes to mind? Do you think of a mainframe computer sitting in a big room in the middle of your building? Do you think of expensive, highly specialised software? Do you imagine a detailed Business Strategy aimed at organising hundreds of staff? That’s what many small business owners imagine. And they think it’s not for them. If that’s what you think, you’re only half right. Half right because expensive, highly specialised software is probably not for you. Half wrong because good business systems most definitely
are. A business system isn’t hardware or software. It’s the way that you do any part of your business. It’s HOW YOU DO THINGS. You are using systems all the time, you just may not be using them efficiently. I regularly urge business owners to get everything they know about their business out of their head and onto paper. It is extremely hard to grow your business without taking this step first. Recruiting, hiring and delegating requires a clear understanding by all of the business, expectations, standards, processes and much of this needs to form the KPI’s (key performance inductors) for your staff and sub-contractors. So I’m urging you now to do the same with your systems.
LILY Life & Style OD Start writing out how you do things in your business. At a minimum, write out: 1. How you treat your customers or clients. 2. How your paperwork for each sale flows, eg. Contact records, job specifications, project plans, appointment keeping. 3. How your production systems work, eg. planning, estimating, materials ordering, manufacture, delivery. 4. How you market to clients. 5. How you do your bookkeeping, eg. quote, amendments, invoice etc. Do this in detail. For each area, make a very detailed description of every step in the process. Include what you do and why you do it. Include the subtle parts that make your company UNIQUELY YOU. Include the parts that you are proud of. Include the tricks that make it efficient. Include what you tried that didn’t work and explain why. Each system should become a very rich, highly detailed system. Why so much detail? Because this is the beginning of being able to consistently deliver results, even when you aren’t around. Documented (written) systems make delegating much more manageable. Delegating is one of the keys to success in growing your business while still having a life.
How To Delegate. The true test of Leadership! You’ve made a discovery – there’s not enough time left at the end of the day. The consequence, of course, is your list of important things to do never gets smaller. In any business, the CEO’s To Do list has the potential to grow infinitely. This is not simply a personal problem. Your business’ future depends on what you do next. As you drive your organisation beyond its current plateau, you must change the way you relate to your work. There are three stages to making the transition from chief-cook-andbottle-washer (CC&BW) to CEO (source of the management and direction of the business).
019
They are: 1. Understanding your ‘highest value contribution’ to your company and focusing on that role. 2. Recognising your position as a leader and ‘owning’ the job. 3. Delegating everything else, and holding others accountable. You now need to let go of some cherished things like control of the day to day production or service (many things you handled in the past, often out of necessity) and focus on planning, client relationships, product design, hiring, perhaps sales and marketing. What about all these things you used to do? Delegate them! Assign the job to someone else. This doesn’t sound like a big deal, why write a whole article on it? Do you delegate? Of course you do. But do you delegate the important things? The things you ‘know’ you could do better? The things you are the ‘best’ at? Probably not. The question is, should you?
Your highest value contribution Think about your highest value contribution to your company. Which of your activities generate the most revenue, profit, market share, etc? Where do you get the most bang for the buck? Like most chief executives, your greatest leverage is in mobilising the forces around you – your employees, plus key customers, prospects and vendors. Everything else becomes secondary to that in terms of impact.

Cont... ARE YOU ‘CONTROLLING’ YOUR BUSINESS INTO THE GROUND?
© Monkey Business - Fotolia.com
So the answer is yes. You should give away even the things you are ‘best’ at. Then make sure they are done right. Make sure they are up to spec and delivered on time.
The cost of holding on Now, the thorny part. Many business owners refrain from delegating responsibilities they’ve labeled ‘critical’. They fear the job won’t be done correctly, or no one else can do it as quickly, and it won’t get done on time, or the right attention won’t be paid. Give it up! The growth of your organisation will be stifled to the extent that you hold on to critical functions. Your company will suffer in the exact areas where you think you are the expert! Eg. Product design? You hold up the development of a key component, because you are the expert, yet you are away at a customer meeting. Staffing? Two new staff can’t be hired because you haven’t signed off and are out of town at a jobsite or event. Negotiations on an important deal are held up because you’re too swamped to give it your attention. You become the choke point on each of these vital functions. And you feel – of course – “I have to be involved.” No you don’t. ‘The exact
degree you have not developed your staff to assume various functions, is equal to the degree to which the growth of your company will be impeded’.
Aside from fear the job won’t be done as well, there is another, more insidious reason entrepreneurs do not delegate. If you aren’t doing the ‘important’ stuff, you become redundant. Dead weight. Overhead. If you have a great Head of Sales, or Project Manager, what will you do? You feel this way because you haven’t completed transition; you haven’t taken the trouble of understanding how you personally create value in your company, and you haven’t fully assumed the role of leader. Once you make this transition, you won’t have time for the rest. It’s delegation, not abdication. Many business owners delegate like this. They say, “John, would you take on this project? It has to be done by next Thursday.” That’s it. Then, when the job comes back incomplete, they are infuriated. What happened? They left out accountability. They neglected the structure for making sure things happened according to plan.
‘ Give it up! The growth
of your organisation will be stifled to the extent that you hold on to critical functions.’
LILY Life & Style OD There are 5 components to successful delegation. 1. Give the job to someone who can get it done. This doesn’t mean that person has all the skills for execution, but that they are able to martial the right resources. Sometimes the first step in the project will be education. Maybe your delegate has to attend a seminar, a course, or shadow you to get up to speed. 2. Communicate precise conditions of satisfaction. Timeframe, outcomes, budget constraints, all must be spelled out. Anything less creates conditions for failure. 3. Work out a plan. Depending on the project’s complexity, the first step may be creation of a plan. The plan should include resources, approach or methodology, timeline, measures and milestones. Even simple projects require a plan. 4. Set up a structure for accountability. Both ongoing or short term projects require scheduled meetings, a weekly conference call or an e-mailed status report. Provide some mechanism where you can jointly evaluate progress and make mid-course corrections. This in additon to very clear ‘Position Descriptions’ for staff helps to keep projects, and people on track. 5. Get buy in. Often timeframes are dictated by external circumstances. Still, your delegate must sign on for the task at hand. If you say “This must be done by next Tuesday” they have to agree that it is possible. Ask instead. “Can you have this by Tuesday?” To you this may seem a bit remedial, but the step is often overlooked. Whenever possible, have your delegate set the timeline and create the plan. You need only provide guidance and sign off. If you skip any one of the above steps, you dramatically reduce the likelihood things will turn out the way you want them to. On the other hand, if you rigorously follow the steps, you greatly increase the odds in your favor. Isn’t this more work than doing it myself, you ask. No – it isn’t. The time it takes to: 1) Establish the goals, 2) Review the plan, and 3) Monitor the progress
021
The time required to delegate is not equal to the time it takes to execute. That is how you gain leverage. Over time this is how you multiply your efforts. (Occasionally it does take longer to communicate something than to do it yourself. Delegate it anyway. The next time will be easier). As an exercise, ask yourself, what am I unwilling to delegate? Make a list of the reasons why not. Identify the best person in your organisation – not you – to take on this project or function. Then call a meeting. Begin the meeting with step one. If there is no one to whom you can give away key functions, you have to look carefully at your staff situation. It may be time to hire the right people. Review your relationship with your PA, assistant, secretary, Office Manager. Have you let them take on their fair share of the workload? Are you giving them sufficiently sophisticated work to do? Are they ready to upgrade? Some situations call for you to step back in. Perhaps you are the only one in your company with some particular technical knowledge, or your insight will accelerate the design process, or you have the long-standing relationship with a vendor or customer. Go ahead, step in. Do your thing – briefly, complete the project and resume your leadership position. The only point to delegating something is if it frees you for things which create greater value for your business. Don’t give away the hiring function if you are spending your time fiddling with the web site. Don’t hire a Sales Manager, if you are spending your time on purchasing. The greatest leverage you have is in leading your company. Lavish your time on that. Maybe you don’t want a bigger business, you want to keep yours small. Still, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to go on a long vacation and turn the keys over to someone else to run and make money for you while you are gone? Without systems, without delegation that won’t be remotely possible. With systems and staff experienced in running your business almost anything is. Now, doesn’t that sound like a reason to ‘LET GO OF CONTROL’?

CHRISTMAS COOKIES
This simple cookie recipe by Foodie Blogger Mindy Belle Cooking will have you baking cookies for every occasion. Check out our attempts! Recipe by Melinda Dass @ www.mindybellecooking.wordpress.com
In a bowl or electric mixer beat the butter and sugar together until light and creamy. Add the egg and vanilla and mix. Sift the flour add (one heaped spoonful at a time) until mixed together. Knead the dough until smooth then wrap in cling film and rest in the fridge for half an hour. Pre heat your oven to 180 deg. Roll dough on a lightly floured surface to around 4mm thick and cut out your shapes.
Place on a baking tray lined with baking parchment (Note: you must use the baking paper) cook until light golden brown around the edges. Melinda’s Tips: These biscuits cook quite quickly, the first batch may take 12 minutes, the second 10 minutes the third 8 minutes. If you do not watch them they may burn. Make a double batch and you can keep the dough in the fridge to make another fresh batch within 2 days.
INGREDIENTS 125 g of unsalted butter (organic) 125 g caster sugar 1 medium egg (organic) 1tsp vanilla extract 250 g plain flour (organic) It makes a very soft dough so you may need to add a little flour when you start rolling until it rolls well. Don’t over use the dough too much as it become tough.

Decorate your cookies for every occasion
This great recipe can be used for cookies at Easter, Valentines Day, Birthdays, Halloween or any other special occasion. Royal icing INGREDIENTS 500g sifted icing sugar 2 medium eggwhites (organic) 1 tsp fresh lemon juice Beat eggs until they make peaks. Add icing sugar and lemon juice and beat for approx. 5 to 7 minutes with electric mixer. Melinda’s Tips: If you put this in a sealed sandwich bag it will keep for a few days. I put mine in the sandwich bag to pipe as it is less messy and I only use half at a time as this makes a lot of icing.

A PASSION FOR THE OUTDOORS THE GREEN NOMAD
Image: The Green Nomad
AN ALTERNATIVE BUSINESS MODEL EMERGES FROM A LOVE OF NATURE Gardening and landscaping has become a booming business industry. So it was refreshing to discover a young entrepreneur with a heartfelt passion that drives his love of not just decorative gardens, but gardens that are abundant with life giving foods. Our interview with Tommyk Atanasow The Green Nomad demonstrated a totally new approach to business. Unlike many ‘gardeners or landscapers’ you have an interesting and ethical philosophy about how you provide your service. Can you describe it? He explains it is important to ‘ incorporate the real needs of my client and the needs of community, trends and earth’. In addition ‘show up on time, have a clean work site, use local resources and organise and recycled where possible’. Specifically what services do you offer? ‘My services include Aspect (best use of sunlight), Education (trees for schools), Irrigation setup (water source), Gardens that Pump, Composting (Soil building system), Renewed resources, local resources. Helping identify simple solutions that are often overlooked and easy to love and use’.
You didn’t start your career in this field, where did you start out and why the change of pace? ‘I started my career in the corporate IT world. I exhausted myself fixing IT problems, so I moved to live in a smaller town and helped setup IT solutions for small businesses. I could connect the systems I learnt in the corporate environment to serve those locally. While I lived in the town I started spending time outdoors and growing my own garden. This led to my interest in happier and healthier plants. To find what’s nurturing and beautiful to me. Instead of forcing myself to love a career I was good at, I took time to let my career passion unfold’.
Growing your own food.. saves you money... Encourages respect for others and the environment around you.
LILY Life & Style OD
What are your goals for your business? What direction do you envisage your business going? Like most of us Tommyk replied ‘To earn money’ However he goes on to say ‘A new way of doing business. Being of service, as rewarding as money is I love spending it on education and tools and resources for me to build even grander gardens. My mission is to inspire massive beauty, to plant elible gardens in 500 homes within the next 5 years and have this continue on as a ripple effect’. ‘From inspiring one person I hope they tell many others through the love that they receive in their food producing garden’. He also expresses his openness to learning from others along the way saying ‘I want to see children, grandparents pick up a tool and show me the better way. Where I get to listen and learn from the plants in my garden, understand weather conditions, cultivate rich nutritious soil. My mission is to add more love to the world through gardens and the food they give’. What’s so important about growing your own food? ‘It saves you money. Encourages respect for others and the environment around you’.

CONT...
A PASSION FOR THE OUTDOORS THE GREEN NOMAD It’s health providing. It makes land owners happy when they can feed themselves and their family from their garden. What are your top 5 tips for creating a home veggie garden? ‘Start small, start inside, check daylight, check humidity and temperature, add organic fertilizer’. He goes on to suggest ‘notice, bring awareness, know your limitations and strengths, ask, learn from friends that have done well, there is no failure (even if the plant dies), notice how you are helping yourself, your family, your neighbour’. You travel to a lot of fabulous places whilst you learn about nature and growing food. What are some of your favourite places? ‘Robin Clayfields permaculture property, Shambhala Farm at the farmers market, Mount Cootha Botanical gardens, Coorabell plant nursery, Mullumbimby Community Gardens’. Some of the experiences that have informed his love and learning about home grown foods include cooking in the earth with charcoal in Vietnam and when travelling in Poland visiting the Royal Lazienki Cultural Garden and seeing the locals flower gardens on window sills and balconies, wild strawberries, blueberries and raspberries from the forest and tomato planted green houses. What advice would you give anyone thinking of starting a non-traditional business model like yours? ‘Know your bottom line (what’s the minimum you can operate with). Run a business from ‘being of service’. Set a personal goal (that extends to your maximum business capacity). Add heart … and trust you are going to receive what you need. Just Do It. Take care of your own. Fulfil your lifestyle and wellbeing needs. Do it for your Education (you are learning your whole life since when you are born, you can’t fail when in business for yourself). Make it fun and rewarding’.
Some of the pits and peeks of your experience? Pits ‘Growing with patience. Learning the value of soil quality. Learning that some thing’s don’t work out long term, so change your approach. Some herbs, fruit and veggies just won’t grow! Discovering that other peoples techniques may not work for you’. Tommyk goes on the say he is ‘surprised by how quickly weather can cause an imbalance’. Peeks ‘Being rewarded with the love of your family and neighbours. Time to yourself. Cooking the food I’ve grown and enjoying it with friends, I’m enjoying cooking for others so much more. Learning how little things can make a big difference (like watering) and that slow food is good food (it tastes a lot better). Involvement in lots of educational workshops.’ When asked what he has learnt from his experiences Tommyk explains ‘Your unique skills that made you good at what you do are a great asset to plan your garden project. Build garden layouts with creativity and joy. Be curious and childlike with planting a garden, fun will come with every step along the way.’ You can support the Green Nomad to continue to travel and educate communities and schools on growing food @ http://startsomegood.com/Venture/the_green_nomad

The festive season holds different meaning to each of us; I adore catching up with my closest friends and family, devoting much time and effort to making gifts and goodies for everyone. Christmas boasts a summer aroma for those of us in the southern hemisphere – think fruity, tropical, floral while the northern hemisphere evokes spice - think creamy eggnog with cinnamon sticks, gingerbread, cloves and naturally, the fresh pine scent of the tree.
HANDMADE GIFT GUIDE I would like to share with you these Evergreen Goddess glam recipes with the hope of encouraging you to embrace the joy of handmade gift giving using a collection of aromatic and natural ingredients that are safe for people, pets and the planet – it’s all about the ingredients! I promise that once you make these gifts you will be eager to experiment and create fragrant blends for yourself.

REED DIFFUSER Reed diffusers are an easy, economical and an attractive way to refresh your home and enhance the mood of a room. You’ll never contemplate the synthetic commercial versions ever again!
Start with your promise to only use pure essential oils and then choose a glass or ceramic container – even though any vase or bottle will work find something gorgeous with a narrow neck, the narrow neck will slow down the rate of evaporation. All you need now is your essential oil blend. I offer two recipes; one using alcohol and water and the other is an oil base. Alcohol assists with dispersing the fragrance, I’ve found the greatest success using the water base but if you prefer a more subtle scent, the oil base is perfect. These recommendations are measured for the water based solution, but you can scale up for the oil based version. Just increase the amounts to reach the 1/4 cup volume. Christmas traditional blend 3 drops myrrh, 3 drops frankincense, 6 drops orange
Christmas spirit blend 4 drops bayleaf, 4 drops mandarin, 2 drops cinnamon, 2 drops ginger Focus blend 5 drops rosemary, 6 drops lemon, 1 drop cypress Energizing blend 5 drops basil, 5 drops grapefruit, 2 drops cypress Relaxing blend 5 drops lavender, 3 drops rose, 3 drops cedar, 1 drop patchouli To find out about the effects of synthetic fragrance, please take the time to read the ‘Not So Sexy Report’. NOTE: Essential oils are for external use only. Always consult your health care professional if pregnant, breastfeeding, on medications or homeopathic remedies before using any essential oil products. Keep out of reach of children and pets, especially cats and birds. NEVER use essential oils on cats or birds.
What do you need? Water based 1/4 cup of water 3 tbsp of vodka 12 drops of essential oil Add ingredients to a jar. Screw on lid and shake well until ingredients are emulsified. Pour into your diffuser container and add reeds. Rotate the reeds weekly. Oil based 3/4 cup of carrier oil, like sweet almond oil 1/4 cup of essential oils Splash of vodka Mix oils together and pour into diffuser container. Add reeds. Rotate the reeds weekly. LIP BALM You’ll never buy Vaseline, Chap Stick or paw-paw ointment ever again! Making lip balm is easy, I love knowing exactly what I’m putting on my lips and the recipients of your gifts will be absolutely amazed at how clever you are! First of all you must promise to use pure essential oils and that all of your utensils and workspaces are clean. Step 1: Melt all ingredients apart from the optional pure essential oil in your clean double boiler until completely melted – warm and liquid (not too hot or boiling). Stir. Step 2: Remove from heat and if you’re using essential oil add this now. Stir. Step 3: Pour into your container and watch it harden – very carefully pour your homemade perfume mixture into your chosen container. Tip: Using a little more organic coconut oil in the recipe will provide a yummy gloss finish.
What do you need? 2 tbsp beeswax pellets are easier to measure and you don’t need to grate 2 tbsp organic coconut oil 2 tsp organic sweet Almond oil Optional 10 drops of pure essential oil (I sometimes use peppermint) Suitable container Written by Kerry Jenson aka Evergreen Goddess www.evergreengoddess.com.au

SOLID PERFUME You will never buy the commercial versions or suffer from a fragrance headache ever again! Solid perfume has a vintage feel; my mother had a beautiful collection of ornamental cases and containers. Making solid perfume is so easy and the beeswax makes it last forever. Use pure essential oils (not ‘fragrance oils’) and ensure that all of your utensils and workspaces are clean. Now you need to decide on the scent – whether it is a single essential oil or a blend of oils – this is the most difficult step of the recipe. If you’re unsure you may wish to trial blending a few essential oil combinations. I’ve discovered that no two batches smell exactly the same. It’s also fascinating to know that the order in which you add your oils determines the fragrance – think base, middle and top notes. My signature fragrance is a simple blend of lavender, orange and lemon, in that order. I’ve also found that these go well together: Fresh - Grapefruit, vetiver and ginger Melancholy - Rose, lime and vetiver Sensuous - Ylang ylang, orange and cedarwood Romantic - Bergamot, palmarosa and vanilla Or choose a combination of two oils; sandalwood and grapefruit is gorgeous.
Step 1: Blend Your Essential Oil - I recommend blending your oils ahead of time – measure out into a tiny container and be sure that you the like the smell in concentrated form – the finished product will be subtle. Step 2: Melt the beeswax and oil In a small double boiler (or makeshift double boiler, I use a pyrex cup in my smallest saucepan), start the water heating in the saucepan and place your measured beeswax into the clean top pan or cup. When your beeswax has just about melted add in the carrier oil and stir until everything is warm (not hot or boiling) and liquid. Step 3: Remove From Heat and Quickly Stir in Your Essential Oil(s) – the base sets quickly which is why I recommended blending your oils first. If it hardens before you’ve had time to pour into your container, don’t panic! Just put the bowl back on top of
What do you need? 2 tsp Beeswax – pellets are easier to measure and you don’t need to grate 2 tsp organic carrier oil (like jojoba or sweet almond) Pure essential oils of your choice A container suitable for solid perfume Use about 40 drops of essential oil per 4 tsp solid perfume base (2tsp each of beeswax & carrier oil). your double boiler and let it remelt – not for too long though as the reheating will affect your oil blend. Step 4: Pour Into Your Container and Watch It Harden – very carefully pour your homemade perfume mixture into your chosen container. 5 POINT CHECKLIST FOR ANY INVESTMENT PROPERTY PURCHASE Decade after decade all across the world bricks and dirt has been a business for many investors. 7 out of 10 property owners are homeowners and not investors. The vast majority of this asset class are totally doing this unconsciously as time is creating the result in capital growth.
Millions of unaware homeowners simply bought one house, worked very hard for 40 or so years and paid it off. Can this current climate fast track this result? How can the ‘right’ properties be sought and what is a successful measure of outcome? Our attitude to ‘mentoring’ is that there are varying styles to suit varying clients and that it’s most important to tread lightly into investing, to start slow with measured due diligence and work through some goals before you get started. Some look at the amount of properties and think a good goal is volume, and to a degree I agree. In my opinion I see a successful investor as someone with the quality of their life being a reflection of they way they have learned to use property as a tool to impart the life they seek. They can then use both the equity in their properties as well as the income for doing what they want when they want and their working income is replaced by this rental income.
WRITTEN BY
LISA HARRIS DIRECTOR www.propertyau.com.au
There are clients I have worked with whom have graduated to 100% passive income and they send me pictures with their loved ones from all over the world. One client who is 27 and an accountant pursues her dream of as semi professional tennis player and spent her first 6 months travelling through America and Europe. Not bad huh! Some clients take a ‘Monopoly’ strategy; buy lots - which can be quite scattergun. They have their ‘favourites’ the past has told them this was a good area to invest. My challenge is then, ‘How can you ensure you can apply this to the future?’ Other investors seek blue chip investments only (the colour groups) which while more expensive to get into, they pay the most rent. There are many ‘Investor Milestones’ to measure success in being a property investor: these range from growth to cash flow.
LILY Life & Style OD
Others include; a successful bank application, negotiations on terms of the purchase, contractual amendments to measure legal protections you have as the buyer. It’s about understanding the risks and your downsides, what is the ROI (return on your investment)? It’s important to seek a professional team and set goals to meet your targets, preparation, education and a measured series of steps. Have you heard these words from a sales person? If it doesn’t feel right, then generally its not. Agents are infamous for creating scarcity for a specific property, the reality is it is not the first or the last deal, and deals can happen anywhere at any time. Anyone can buy a property from Real Estate.com, or at an auction or private sale. However, to create a portfolio is a totally different agenda I share with many of my Mentorees that like a cake has a method, a grade of ingredients, certain conditions (heat in this example) and time to produce the desired outcome, so too does a property portfolio. Here’s a good set of exercises to get started: 1. Define your intention and strategy with this purchase: Investment needs being short, medium or long term use. Many people make the mistake of believing an investment is a one size fits all model. It should be clear in the immediate goal what is the most desirable outcome. Is it cash flow? Is it to diversify your investments? Is it to create a strategy for income replacement? Are you a buy and hold investor? Are you looking for more immediate results? Are you looking for a property to renovate and add value to?
033
seeking to re-invest with that equity, consider that outer areas can typically have slower rates of capital growth. Are you time poor? Clearly a renovation would not be the most desirable and perhaps your skill set is not at all in that field. Are you self employed and are your financials up to date and in order? 3. Seek a pro - What do you look like to a lender? Did you know as many as up to 95% of some banks applications submitted directly by a customer are declined? How fluent are you or what experience do you have with the current lending process, criteria and system to extract a favourable outcome in a pre-approval? There’s no short cut there but to go to a broker and seek a professional whom can cross reference all these, translate this and provide you feedback on your borrowing capacity. 4. Target a price point you feel conformable with – And stick to it! I would not allow a Mentoree to use their full borrowing capacity for their first time. It can be overwhelming and downright paralysing to your ability to digest. If you make it through – and not many do… then you can up the stakes the next time, if the benefits are clear and you have had a good outcome. 5. Be very clear that you are not shopping. The terms can be sought by having a good team in place to assist you to negotiate with someone whom essentially wishes to sell a property and assists you to utilise your buying power. Depending on that deal you can create favourable outcomes that are win – win.
Although it can be overwhelming and several frustrations can creep in, there are great benefits and mostly, remember that it should be fun. We all have a choice regarding the income we seek, not all 2. Work out what are your strengths: investments are good for everyone – These can be tangible and non-tangible however unless you seek some advice you and both are very relevant to match will always be left blaming the market, or yourself to an investment that does not believing it’s too riskyKitchens or having no overwhelm and works with what you are Kitchen Design and Cabinetry – Theo Sismanellis - Designer Victoria, Australia understanding why it’s never been you! seeking. DESIGNER TIPS FOR AN ELEGANT CHRISTMAS... WRITTEN BY KATERINA KAPELLAKI If you are looking for an elegant approach to match the overall decor of your home, Christmas colour schemes are a good option. You can choose a single colour for every ornament, from wreath decorations to stockings and lighting. What are your decorating plans for this Christmas? Are you considering a large natural Christmas tree or would you rather replace it with a more sustainable option? How will you decorate your table on Christmas Eve? Add ‘Wow’ with a Disco Ball
Fill Cylinders with Ornaments
Hang a disco ball from the ceiling to float above the Christmas tree. A Christmas tree needs a festive punch. Add a bow, with long ribbon tendrils this adds the real wow factor.
Use spray paint to add a shimmery touch to pinecones and round glass ornaments. Displayed en masse in tall glass vases, they become instant and easy Christmas accents.
Cheer Up Your Entry Way
Wrap Your Coffee Table
Pressed for time but want a big show? Fit a real Christmas Tree into a decorative planter, and fill in around the edges with spray-painted magnolia branches and sprigs of seeded eucalyptus. After the holidays, plant the tree in the garden. Designed to come together quickly, the look is easy to tailor. Change the plants or colours to suit your taste.
Transform a coffee table into a wrapped Christmas present by crisscrossing strands of ribbon over the top and sides for a giftlike effect. Silver family heirlooms add to the sparkly decorating theme.

REAL SUPERFOOD NUTRITION
ACAI
Written by Brock Bowen Lifetarian Amazonia www.amazonia.com.au
CAIRNS HAS RECENTLY BEEN PAINTED PURPLE WITH LEADING CAFES, JUICE BARS AND HEALTH FOOD SHOPS NOW STOCKING A DELICIOUS PURPLE BERRY FROM THE AMAZON RAINFOREST CALLED ACAI. PRONOUNCED AH-SIGH-EE, THE PURPLE BERRY HAS BEEN USED BY THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH AMERICA FOR MANY YEARS AS A FOOD SOURCE AND MEDICINALLY. Acai is a small purple berry slightly larger than a blueberry and grows on the tropical riverbank regions of the Amazon basin in Brazil. The acai berry grows in clusters on the palm tree Euterpe Oleracea, which occupies more than 6.1 million acres throughout the Amazon. Once the fruit has ripened, it is harvested by hand and the skin and thin layer of fruit pulp are removed from the seed. It is transported out of the rainforest by canoe and then as a frozen pulp using the most sustainable fair trade practices possible. In Cairns, Australia, we are big supporters of
the local food movement, non-GMO, organics and sustainability as a community. Why would we support a product from the other side of the world? Dwayne Marten, CEO and owner of Amazonia, says, “Acai is one of the world’s most naturally abundant foods on the planet, whilst fair trade harvesting provides real financial incentives to keep these trees standing and preserve the Amazon rainforest.” To me, keeping the Amazon as a rainforest seems like an excellent thing to support. Acai is known for its super-high antioxidant properties (42 times that of blueberries).
LILY Life & Style OD Antioxidants are the good guys running around the body cleaning up the toxins or free radicals (bad guys) we experience in life from stress, processed foods, pollution and many other sources. Benefits can include improved health, maintaining youthful vigour, increased energy levels, better sex, weight loss, more fun, immune boost and increased wellness. These antioxidants are crucial to the health and wellbeing of our body’s internal and external organs. They are important for maintaining beautiful vibrant skin, they contribute to longevity and anti-ageing, can enhance the memory and can also assist in weight management. Purple foods are powerful antioxidant storehouses, jam-packed with an abundance of vitamins, minerals and amino acids amongst other nutrients. They contain the important anti-ageing anthocyanin compound, an antioxidant anti-inflammatory flavonoid that is also responsible for the wonderful colour pigments we find in plant foods and flowers ranging from pinks and reds through to blue, purple and indigo. Purple foods also contain resveratrol, another powerful anti-ageing compound. These antioxidant compounds protect many body systems; they are said to provide protective benefits to the cardiovascular system,

digestive organs, brain, blood, cells and tissues.
All acai contain: Vitamins A, C, D, E, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 17 vital minerals including zinc, calcium, magnesium, copper, folic acid and iron The perfect balance of omega 3, 6 and 9 plus amino acids 6 types of antioxidants The untarnished, rich, dark organic fertile soils of the Amazon rainforest are the perfect growing environment for this delicious berry. How does it get any better than that? Traditionally acai is blended into a smoothie or a bowl with fruits and juice and topped with granola. It also comes as a freeze dried powder you can add to juice, yoghurt, smoothies or your favourite snack. The bowls are my personal favourite, mixed with delicious fresh fruits, and in a thick and creamy sorbet with granola on top. Go and try it at your local juice bar or cafe, or enjoy blending it at home.

FIVE EASY STEPS TO BECOME MORE EMPOWERED The word Empowered what does this word really mean to the person saying it? Defined in the dictionary as ‘to give power or
authority to; authorise, especially by legal or official means’. I believe this word means a number of different things. It just depends on the person using it! Empowered is a feeling or an energy within us. The feeling that you are unstoppable. It is the confidence we feel after an
‘Accomplishment’. Take something as small as just cleaning your kitchen. After you feel a sense of Accomplishment. It’s that feeling that comes from seeing your freshly cleaned kitchen. All of a sudden you want to clean the living room, the bedroom and the bathroom. Then you want to vacuum! It’s that push of ‘confidence’ within you. Before you know it your entire house is cleaned! The ‘confidence’ felt at each step made you feel EMPOWERED.
LILY Life & Style OD
061
To be Empowered in its simplest form means ‘taking charge of your own life’. The first step is to understand that we all are capable of it, each and every one of us. Sometimes it’s stuck deep down inside or it feels as if it is not there at all. However the trick is to find it within yourself and pull it out!
of the situation. For example a restaurant gets your order wrong. A positive way to look at this is ‘yes you have to wait a little longer for your food’ the upside...they gave you a discount or a free item as compensation.
Empowerment grows from something small, like a tiny seed that blooms into a huge oak tree. Remember, everything in this world came from something small! Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try and every decision to try is a step closer to accomplishing your goals.
Take the word SHOULD out of your vocabulary! Try to use the words I WILL. You will notice some immediate changes in your attitude and life.
Here are some of my own steps that help me feel empowered everyday. These small steps can lead to something big!
By nature most of us are naturally empathetic. This means that whether we intend to or not we feel what other people feel. If we spend too much time with negative people their negativity will infiltrate our lives. However if we surround ourselves with positive and motivating people...well you get the idea!
1. Make YOU looking and feeling good a priority! When you wake up in the morning take a shower, do your hair, put on a little make up and something cute to wear. When you think you look good. You feel good. When you feel good you’re ready to take on the world! Don’t fall into the trap of letting this become a low priority. 2. Nurture your body
4. Lose the ‘Should’ attitude
5. Surround yourself with positive and motivating people.
Try to remind yourself when you’re feeling down (it’s the deepest pain which empowers you to grow into your highest self ) But you have to be willing to let it EMPOWER you!
www.empoweredandbeautiful.com
Change your eating habits. Eat less sugar and more fruits and vegetables. This step complements step 1. However this helps you to feel good on the inside! When you take care of your body, your body takes care of you. Eating healthier is a mood enhancer all by itself! Fast food and grease can affect your mood and make you feel sluggish. 3. Be positive Start thinking positively. Sometimes this is easier said than done, however with a little effort bad habits can be broken and you can change your mind set. When something frustrating happens there is often a lesson or a positive that comes out

THE ART OF PERSISTENCE
Written by Leonie Lockwood Flowing Life Yoga and Meditation
Some would argue that persistence isn’t an art form, but rather a dogged approach to get the results you want- head down, bum up kind of thing. However whilst persistence requires us to work, it’s how, why and when we work to achieve our desired results that makes persistence an art form. When I was a teenager my dad gave me a quote from Calvin Coolidge to put above my desk which goes something like this “Nothing in this world will take place like persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent“. Unfortunately, rather than serving to inspire me with my schooling, this quote, at the time, seemed harsh and draconian. I interpreted this as hard work and nothing else and of course as a teenager, all I wanted to do was to explore the world, not study. Now I’m bringing up this notion of persistence because we’re heading towards the end of the year. A time when we start to tell ourselves that we’re going to lose a bit of weight before
Christmas, going to stick to our new years’ resolutions, next year will be different than this year etc, you know the score! I’m a big believer in New Years’ resolutions, but just not at the New Year. Yes, there is something significant about the time and date, but why wait, I find if I get a head start on my resolutions then they are more likely to be implemented and embedded prior to the New Year. This allows me to relax on 1 January, knowing that I am already part way there with my goal. This makes it easier to continue. Lately, I’ve revisited Calvin Coolidge’s interpretation of persistence as I stepped away from the income security of a full time job to expand my business Flowing Life. What I didn’t see as a teenager, I certainly see now.

Flowing Life Yoga is celebrating! A beautiful new website www.flowinglife.com.au There is a lot of truth to what Calvin said all those many years ago. I’ve worked in a range of different areas, studied a number of degrees but never before have I had to be so self sufficient, creative and persistent as in running my own business. By using analogies to my yoga practice I’ve found the creativity within myself to continue to persist in times of doubt and I have benefited. These initiatives have stopped me associating the concept of persistence with unhelpful notions of dogged discipline. 1. Clearly defining my values and checking in regularly with myself to ensure my yoga work, practice and teachings are congruent with these values. 2. Being focused on giving new ideas and people a go, just as I would approach a new asana (posture) in yoga. 3. Reminding myself that new neurological pathways do not form overnight and that it took some years before I could comfortably touch my toes. 4. Having a vision of my long term goal, but making sure that immediate small goals are what I focus on and allow to unfold. Much the same as I would when I am learning a lengthy, new yoga sequence. 5. Breaking my small goals into even more manageable steps as I would if I was teaching yoga postures and sequences to complete beginners. By finding an analogy to something that I love, I’ve found my willingness and energy to persist no longer seems a mountainous chore!
