JOB SATISFACTION ARE YOU HAPPY? Statistics on jobs satisfaction vary by industry, region and culture. However some statistics shows that an alarming 75% of the people working today are unhappy with their current jobs.

MORE CAREER TIPS? www. lifeandstyle onadime.com

LILY Life & Style OD

Something everyone needs to understand in their career journey is ‘You should appreciate your CURRENT job if you want to succeed in your career in the FUTURE.’ So why are the statistics so high? Some of the reasons include disatisfaction due to feeling that their talents are wasted because they’re not applicable to their current job. Others sight unreasonable demands placed upon them in the workplace or having to work long hours to get anywhere. Often the paths to promotion may be blocked or that individuals can’t get to where they want to be because of the view that people have of them, their level of experience, or their performance in the job. If you are one of the 75% what can you do about it? Something everyone needs to understand in their career journey is that ‘You should appreciate your CURRENT job if you want to succeed in your career in the FUTURE.’ Try to get to the root of what is causing your unhappiness in where you are and what you’re currently doing. The easiest way is the:

Five Whys? Ask yourself, “Why?” five times. This can be as simple as saying “ I’m not happy”, “Well, why?”, “Because I got passed for a promotion.”, “Why was that?”, “Because they didn’t value the project I was working on.”, “Why not?”, “Because management changed and they changed the objectives.”, “Well, why was that?”, in this way you can drill down to the root cause is and find out what the problems really are. When you drill down, you may find that it is an issue with you, or an issue with the organisations culture or direction or even your colleagues. Another technique for identifying whether it is time to make a change in your career is something most of us can relate to.

‘Top Ten Signs That You Need a New Job’ It’s a bit like a Letterman Top Ten. They’re a bit tongue-in-cheek, but there is truth in all of them. 10 You’re outgoings exceeds your income. You just need more money. 9 The most rewarding thing you did this week was sharpen all 12 of your pencils to the same length. 8 You’re reluctant to be a Career Day speaker at your kid’s fourth grade class. 7 Everyone in your workgroup got a raise except you. 6 When you complain about your job your partner falls asleep. 5 You were late for work three times this week, but you don’t care. 4 There’s a meeting at 3:00 to talk about the upcoming reorganisation, but you’re not invited. 3 Your boss keeps forgetting your name. 2 You constantly daydream about being a forest ranger. 1 Your company was recently acquired and you spent two weeks worry that you’d be laid off. After that, you worried that you wouldn’t be. Remember, finding a new job is not always easy. So, before you decided to look for another job, always resolve your problems with your current job ensure you can leave with a clear conscience and knowing you did all that you could in your current situation...

Then Go For It!

STRESS MANAGEMENT We all have a favourite expression when it comes to being stressed out. But when it comes down to it, it is how we work, or even relax, that triggers stress. Have you ever been stressed even when you’re trying to relax, to the point that you can’t relax? Stress is unavoidable in life, so it is important to find ways to decrease and prevent stressful incidents and decrease negative reactions to stress. Here are some of the things that can be done. Simply remember to build these into your daily routine. You can introduce them over time if needed; the import part is to simply start to take a few minutes each day to shift AWAY from a stressful way of living and coping to a more positive stress free lifestyle.

Managing time Time management skills, we hear the term all the time, but what does it really mean. It allows you more time with your family and friends and possibly increases your performance and productivity and gives you more time to do the things you love. This will help reduce your stress too.

Improve your time management 1. Save time by focusing and concentrating,

delegating, and scheduling time for ‘yourself’ (to read, to pamper yourself, to go out). 2. Keep a record of how you spend your time, including work, family, and leisure time (Record where your time is ‘getting lost’). 3. Prioritise your time by rating tasks by importance and urgency. Redirect your time to those activities that are important and meaningful to you. 4. Manage your commitments by not over or under committing. Don’t commit to what is not important to you. We all do, it’s time to break that habit, life is too short to be doing things you wish you weren’t. 5. Deal with procrastination by using a day planner, breaking large projects into smaller ones, and setting short-term deadlines. 6. Examine your ‘beliefs’ to reduce conflict between what you believe and what your life is like. Use this to determine what activities need to stay and which need to go.

MORE TIPS? Visit our website www.lifeandstyle onadime.com

Build healthy coping strategies It is important that you identify your coping strategies. One way to do this is by recording stressful events, your reaction, and how you cope in a stress journal (did you become angry, upset, fearful). With this information, you can work to change unhealthy coping strategies into healthy ones, those that help you focus on the positive and what you can change or control in your life.

Lifestyle Some behaviours and lifestyle choices affect your stress level. They may not cause stress directly, but they can interfere with the ways your body seeks relief from stress. Try to: 1. Balance personal, work, and family needs and obligations. 2. Have a sense of purpose in life. 3. Get enough sleep, since your body recovers from the stresses of the day while you are sleeping. 4. Eat a balanced diet for a nutritional defence against stress. 5. Get moderate exercise throughout the week. 6. Limit your consumption of alcohol or cigarettes (relying on these may lead to dependency and inhibits your body from naturally coping with stress).

Social support

More and more research indicates a strong relationship between social support and better mental and physical health.

Changing your thinking When an event triggers negative thoughts, you may experience fear, insecurity, anxiety, depression, rage, guilt, and a sense of worthlessness or powerlessness. These emotions trigger the body’s stress, just as an actual threat does. Dealing with your negative thoughts and how you see things can help reduce stress. ‘Thought stopping’ helps you stop a negative thought to help eliminate stress. Disproving irrational thoughts helps you to avoid exaggerating the negative thought, anticipating the worst, and interpreting an event incorrectly.

Two important coping mechanisms for stress are: A ‘Problem solving’ attitude which helps you identify all aspects of a stressful event and find ways to deal with it. Changing your ‘communication style’ helps you communicate in a way that makes your views and opinions known without making others putting others down, being hostile, or intimidating. This reduces the stress that comes from poor communication.

Social support is a major factor in how we experience and cope with stress. Social support is the positive support you receive from family, Try to slowly introduce a few of these techniques friends, and the community. It is the knowledge that you are cared for, loved, esteemed, and valued. and you will see the change in your stress levels.

Create the Gatsby look in your home with designs from the movies Creative Director & our 1920’ style finds.

Our visit to the Grand Designs Melbourne Live Show in late 2012 brought this breathtaking collection to our attention. I have long been a fan of both Mokum Textiles and Catherine Martin, so seeing them working together for this collection is very exciting.

Our fascination with Catherine Martin’s aesthetic began when in 1996 we were enthralled by Baz Luhrmann’s production of Romeo and Juliet for which Catherine won a BAFTA for her Production Design and an Academy Award nomination for her Art Direction. Never before had we seen films with this level of artistic impact. This was a sign of things to come from Catherine Martin a brilliant multi-talented creative force!

You might already know Catherine as Baz Luhrmanns wife and business partner, however she has also designed almost all of his productions and deserves much of the credit for the visual feast his movies and operas provide. Martin is an accomplished Art Designer, Production Designer, Costume Designer and Co Producer. Her work includes Strictly Ballroom, Romeo and Juliet, Australia and Moulin Rouge. She also directed Collette Dinnigans 1998 Autumn Winter show at the Louve in Paris. Adding to Catherine’s artistic repertoire is her collection of homewares, collaborating with Designer Rugs, Porter’s Paints (wallpaper and paint), Mokum (fabrics) and Anthropologie (bedding, furnishings).

Catherine recently completed work with Bazz Luhrmann again as Production & Costume Designer and one of the producers on his latest film The Great Gatsby. As the Great Gatsby mania has been brewing with release of the latest Baz Luhrmann extravaganza so too has the 1920’s fashion and style influence.

Mokum Textiles were selected to provide much of the set textiles on the Great Gatsby movie. John Turvey of Mokum tells us “Everything from a plush red velvet for curtains, to an embroidered silk for upholstery, lots of fabrics were used in the film. Many designs from the Mokum ‘Moderne’ collection, which was a deco inspired collection we released about 3yrs ago, and ‘Etoile’ from the Dauphine collection - even our Firewheel Outdoor fabric was used to decorate on the yacht they use in the film!”

TEACH CHILDREN TO RESPECT BY TREATING THEM WITH RESPECT BLOG: www.theenhancedme.blogpot.com

IN ORDER TO TEACH A CHILD TO TREAT OTHERS WITH RESPECT AND DIGNITY, THEY MUST ALSO BE TREATED THAT WAY. Childhood is a time for children to learn about the world, including how to get along with others. Parents play an essential role in teaching children how to form healthy relationships and grow into socially adept individuals. This social competence allows children to be cooperative and generous, express their feelings, and empathise with others. Respect is an attitude. Being respectful helps a child succeed in life. If children don’t have respect for peers, authority, or themselves, it’s almost impossible for them to succeed. A respectful child takes care of belongings and responsibilities, and a respectful child gets along with peers. The most effective way to teach children this lesson is by modelling the behaviour you want to encourage. Every time you say “please” or lend a helping hand, you are showing your children how you would like them to act. Ask for your children’s help with daily tasks, and accept their offers of help. Praise your child’s good behaviour and traits

often, and help them realise how good it feels inside to do a good deed or be generous with another person. Socially competent children are ones who have a strong sense of self worth and importance. When a child feels good about themselves, it’s easy for them to treat others in a positive, helpful manner. Encourage acts of generosity through sharing and cooperation. Let your child know when it’s someone else’s turn with a toy or on the swing and praise their ability to recognise this on their own. Thank them for being polite and respectful and for sharing and cooperating. Children know from their own experiences that words can hurt, and that name-calling, teasing, or excluding others affects how people feel. Children want to be treated fairly, but they don’t always understand how to treat others the same way. One way to teach fairness is to explain a rule to your child, pointing out that it applies to him as well as to others.

TEACH YOUR CHILD TO GIVE RESPECT AND THEY’LL GAIN RESPECT IN RETURN When a child experiences respect, they know what it feels like and begin to understand how important it is. Keep in mind the saying ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ Schools teach children about respect, but parents have the most influence on how respectful children become. Until children show respect at home, it’s unlikely they will show it anywhere else. How can you show respect to your child? If you do something wrong, admit it and apologise. Don’t embarrass, insult or make fun of your child. Compliment them and let your child make choices and take responsibility. Listen to your child’s side of the story before making a decision on an issue or problem. Knock before entering your child’s room. Keep promises, show your child that you mean what you say, and give your child your full attention. Teach your child to give respect and they will gain respect in return and most importantly, teach your children that respect is earned. Make sure that you are leading by example and modelling respectful behaviour. Be a

law-abiding citizen. Show concern for your environment, animals and other people. Openly and honestly discuss examples of witnessed disrespect. In addition, teach your child to respect themselves. Self-respect is one of the most important forms of respect. Once we respect ourselves, it is easier to respect others. Help them set and achieve goals. Encourage honesty and teach them that people make mistakes, and that they are the best way to learn. Most importantly, praise your child often for good deeds, behaviors or traits, and tell them you love them several times each day. Then you’re sure to raise a child capable of giving and gaining respect.

THE FAMILY THAT EATS TOGETHER STAYS HEALTHY TOGETHER

RECENT STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT NOT ONLY DO CHILDREN LIKE TO SIT DOWN AT THE DINNER TABLE AND EAT A MEAL WITH THEIR PARENTS, BUT THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO EAT A WELL BALANCED NUTRITIOUS MEAL WHEN THEY DO. With the hectic lives we seem to lead these days, getting the family all together in the same place at the same time can be a difficult chore. Between work schedules, after-school activities, errands, and the like, it seems we have less and less time. However with a few simple ideas and some planning, meal time can be an enjoyable and treasured family time. Designate no less than one night per week to have a sit-down meal with your family. Sunday nights are usually a good choice for this because you have more time to relax and the weekend chores have been completed. Involve your children in the meal planning and preparation. This gives them a strong sense of ritual and inclusion and the foundation for a lifetime of healthy meal planning and preparation. Make sure the television is off, and make it a rule that all phone calls go to voice mail or the answering machine during the meal. Take this time to visit with one another and enjoy one another’s company. This is a great time to reconnect and find out what events happened

this week. Take your time eating, and teach your children how to do the same in the process. Eating slowly is a healthy habit. Don’t jump up and start clearing dishes and putting things away until everyone is done eating and talking. Dinner time is a great place to start setting a routine. Sitting together at the dinner table gives children the opportunity to share their day and talk about their feelings. This is also a great time to include some responsibility in your child’s routine, such as helping to set or clear the table. Regardless of how exhausted you or your children may be, don’t be tempted to skip winding down from the day. On those days that you can’t sit down as a family, try to make a habit of sitting down and chatting with them while they are eating, instead of rushing around catching up on the chores. This shows them you’re interested, which might seem obvious, however it demonstrates that you care and want to be involved as an important part of their everyday life. www.lifeandstyleonadime.com

FEEL GOOD NOW AND WHENEVER YOU CHOOSE WITH THE 7 MOST POWERFUL KEYS Do you want to feel good? Would you agree that everything that you do, you do it because of your belief that it is going to make you feel better? Have you bought a dress because it feels good to wear it? Have you drunk coffee or tea or ate chocolate because you know you will feel more energised? Have you wanted that soul-mate relationship so that you could feel like life is more meaningful and exciting? Whether you are conscious of it or not, you are a vibrating, feeling, creating Being. Feeling good is your birthright. This is why you constantly seek it though you may not have yet arrived at knowing how to truly feel good often, and from within. Would you like to know how? Let me introduce you to Izabella Siodmak, author, inspirational speaker, emPower coach and founder-facilitator of Natural Attitudes Health Retreat. Izabella, or Miss Gift of UPlift, has mastered the art and science of how to feel good from the inside out after she found herself, some 23 years ago, on the verge of dying. On this particular day, for the first time in her life, she heard her Inner Being’s voice and it was warning her that she was going to die soon. Upon

hearing this powerful message, she decided she truly wanted to live and to feel good, rather than feel so badly burdened by the self-hatred that was driving her to a slow yet inevitable death. From that moment Izabella not only tapped into something that is available to everyone, but she took the first step on her amazing path of purpose. Her passion has unfolded fully over the last decade of teaching and facilitating through her one-on-one mental and emotional wellness retreats and emPower sessions. When it comes to supporting you to feel good from within, to connect to your own clarity and guidance and to live the life you are here for, she is the woman who truly knows how.

MORE TIPS? Visit www. izabellasiodmak .com

Here are Izabella’s

7 HOT TIPS FOR FEELING GOOD FROM WITHIN 1. Begin to focus your thoughts and ideas upon what you desire to experience rather than what is missing. You get more in life of what you focus upon. Turn the switch off for what’s missing and turn the switch on to what you want. Taste it, hear it, smell it, feel it, visualise it until you vibrate with it.

2. Feel your way to love, joy and liberty in this very moment. It’s not something that you reach one day, but a choice you make now. Choose one of the above emotions by stating: “I choose love” or “I choose joy”. Or pick a positive emotion that you’d like to experience more of. Now, let go and watch the magic appear. Gently affirm this statement for a minute or so when you wake up and just before you go to bed.

3. Find the gift in every situation. You can be feeling terrific in the majority of your life, but if you have even one area that is troubling you, then eventually, it can contaminate all of your life. It only takes 17 seconds to focus on one thing that you’re upset about and you activate other thoughts of instances that also create the same upset. By bringing appreciation into a tricky topic you are shifting your vibration so that the old way of perceiving it won’t drag you down anymore. Enhance your vibration of appreciation by asking yourself: “What’s good about this?” Listen to the answer. Keep asking this question and keep hearing the answers until you feel good again. Once you get into this habit you’ll find yourself walking around seeing the goodness in everything, and of course feeling great for it. The better you feel the more aware you become also of the perfection of everything and why everything needed to happen the way it did. Appreciation will also support you to surrender to situations, for you cannot control external situations yet you have total control of how you choose to perceive them.

4. Choosing the focus of feeling good. There are a million plus excuses for why you could, should, must, ought to feel lousy. Instead, the following is a question you can ask yourself anytime you like, in order to find the perfect reasons to feel good. Again, ask and then allow the answer in that moment to arise. There’s no mind here, just you tapping into and basking in your infinite well of awareness. Ask: “What’s the best feeling thought I can access right now?” Then allow your answers to arise.

5. Experience immense power and infinite freedom by simply staying over here in your own business and tending to your own alignment. You can never know what goes on for another. You cannot live in another’s shoes nor know what vibration they are operating from. You only have you. The only thing you have control of is where you are with yourself. All your power, and all your freedom is over here with you. From here, you may choose to create something, express yourself or anything else, but it arises from a connected place rather than a reaction to the world around you.

6. Choose the most important relationship to be the one between you and your Inner Being. Let yourself line up with your Inner Being, Higher Self, God Source or whatever you wish to call it. This energy that is 99% of who you are, is eternally loving, peaceful and blissful. It is only in your human self that you will fluctuate in how much of this constant, permanent, stable, loving and potent energy you embrace. Making your alignment with your Inner Being a priority is supported by practicing the above points in order to experience the states of love, joy, liberty, appreciation, awareness and personal power. Through choice, intention and focus on what you desire, your beautiful mind is a powerful ally in your alignment. Then, your feelings let you know how close, or far away, you are from fully aligning with this vast, eternal and powerful essence within you.

LILY Life & Style OD

7. Understanding Divine Alignment. When you are aligned fully with your Inner Being you are at One with everything. Here, you feel invincible, infinite and unlimited. In the space of total alignment you access the perfect solutions and insights as well as experiencing the effortless flow of the powerful Universe, rather than a struggle against it. As you connect to the pure, potent power of the energy that flows through you, you need not ask the world to change, for you begin to understand the power of how you create the world around you. You become aware through every cell of your being, just how perfect everything is. You understand your role in what you wish to create next. It feels tremendously satisfying to be in your alignment with the divine and in this, knowing who you truly are. You realise that heaven is right here on earth, and always has been. Now, you have the eyes to see it and the open heart to feel it within you and in the life that surrounds you daily. Here, your power comes alive, and you shift out of survival and into full throttle thrive. You know that you were born to feel this joy, and to make feeling good your highest priority, for it is a reflection of who you truly are. You know you deserve it, no excuses.

Stimulate the Workplace

AROMATHERAPY:

THE SMELL OF SUCCESS Your company is having a meeting with potential clients and you want to make sure everything is all set for their office visit. You’ve brought in platters of food, coffee, and the conference room is looking good. However, you still think something may be missing... Enter the essence of aromatherapy. Essential oils have been used since ancient Egyptian times to enhance their surroundings and promote healing. The use of essential oils to set the mood has long been used by individuals to wind down in the evening or to create a relaxing atmosphere. Now more companies are turning to aromatherapy to increase worker productivity and the general feeling of well-being in the

office. The process is fairly simple: Choose an essential oil such as “Lemon Grass” that has specific benefits such as uplifting the mood and easing fatigue. Place the oils in a diffuser (follow the instructions provided) and let the scent permeate the air. The aroma will heighten the senses and, depending upon the oil, bring various emotional and physical benefits to those exposed to the aroma.

COMPANIES ARE TURNING TO AROMATHERAPY MORE TIPS? TO INCREASE WORKER Visit www.lifeand PRODUCTIVITY styleonadime.com Chamomile for relaxation, soothing and tension release, Ylang-Ylang, which is known to combat stressful feelings. Generate some motivation by blending Lime, Eucalyptus and Rosemary. Some oils that help create a more uplifting environment are Basil, Rosemary, Bergamot and Lemon. An invigorating blend with Lime to refresh, uplift and stimulate the mind, Eucalyptus aids concentration and purifies the air; Rosemary strengthens mental clarity. However before you get too carried away there are a few simple guidelines: 1. Always ensure the rooms is ventilated. 2. Never use too much, some people can be sensitive to the fragrances, so never make it overpowering, just a subtle fragrance. 3. It is not advised to use some fragrances around pregnant woman, so always be aware of this. 4. In an office try to use a plug in oil diffuser, it is a safer option than one with a candle and always follow the instructions. According to Valarie Ann Worwood a Best Selling Author of The Fragrant Pharmacy and The Fragrant Mind, Japanese corporations have long been using aroma to improve efficiency and reduce stress. She describes how one bank would diffuse lavender or rosemary into the customer area, while lemon or eucalyptus are used to keep workers alert at their VDU’s. Other combinations you might like to consider for your workplace are :

A blend to help with group dynamic may include Cedarwood, Lemon, Ginger and Black Pepper. This is ideal for meetings and team discussions to enhance group communication, initiative and cooperation. Cedarwood inspires confidence and harmony, Lemon is reviving, Ginger helps drive initiative, determination and completion, while Black Pepper strengthens endurance. A concentration blend might include Cedarwood, Geranium and Sweet Orange. This is great for periods of intense concentration and when you need to remain calm and centred. The Cedarwood helps to still the mind, Geranium balances the moods and Sweet Orange helps to uplift the mind and emotions. An Energising blend can be made up of Basil, Bergamot, Lemongrass and Peppermint. Or you could try a ‘Keep alert at work’ blend with an energising blend of Basil which maintains mental alertness; Bergamot to uplift; Lemongrass to stimulate and Peppermint aids clear thinking. There is no end to information on the internet available on aromatherapy, but why not apply it to the place where you spend much of your time during the day. The workplace. You might find an entirely new working environment emerges as a result.

IMPORTANT STEPS

TO STARTING YOUR SMALL BUSINESS It takes a lot of hard work to get a business off the ground. It can be difficult to find a good start up guide. Many do not have all the steps required and it is unlikely you will find all the guidance in just one place. There is no lack of information on the internet. However it is knowing what to look for that is the difficulty for most new entrepreneurs.

MORE TIPS? Visit our site www. lifeandstyle onadime.com

So before you spend too much time and money, talk to a few experts. Go to the local Business Support Centre. Your State Government website will list these. Get on the internet and research. Take a little time to make sure ‘entrepreneurship’ is right for you. Make a Pro’s and Con’s list of business ownership, and evaluate yourself honestly. How many characteristics do you have in common with successful entrepreneurs? Is your financial position strong enough? Do you have the necessary technical and management skills? You’re not going to be the perfect entrepreneur. Nobody is. But in order to make yourself the best entrepreneur you can be, consider ways to compensate for any weaknesses you might have.

LILY Life & Style OD

085

So, assuming you’ve done your evaluation and you still want to start a business, take a deep breath, and let’s get started... #1 Conduct a feasibility study of your business. Describe your typical customer, your product and your competitors. Who will your suppliers be? What will you charge for your product? How will you market your product? These are just a few of the questions you need to answer.

#2 Write a complete business plan for your company, using the information you gathered from your feasibility study. This vitally important step is often overlooked. It needs to include a description of your company, its goals, competitors, market, marketing strategy, financial information, and of course, how you intend to meet your goals.

#3 Get your financing in place. There are many ways to finance your business, from your own savings to personal credit cards to bank loans. If you need credit, know your business plan from front to back. If you don’t understand your business plan, your financiers certainly won’t.

#4 Decide what kind of

structure your company will have. From a legal standpoint, there are three basic choices, sole trader, partnership and incorporation, each with advantages and disadvantages. Information on this step is readily available with a simple internet search. Once you understand the differences. Choose which suits your business, also consider your business growth and if it may need to change in the future. This information can be recorded in your business plan.

#5 Choose a name for your company and check on name availability. Naming your company is highly individual, but it’s the first thing associated with your business, so choose your name carefully. You’ll need to do a search on ‘registering a business’ online this will often bring up your local (Country/State) requirements. You may wish to trade under your own name without a ‘Business name’ in this case simply register an ABN under your own name. This is a basic approach for a ‘newby’ entrepreneur.

#6 Depending on which country you live you may have to register federally or by state. Ensure that you clarify this with your Small Business Centre. Much of this can be done online and if you are not sure you can request guidance.

#7 You may need to register for GST (Goods & Services Tax) (or PST in some other counties). In Australia the basic guideline is if your business has a GST turnover of $75 000 or more ($150 000 or more for non profit organisations) or if you provide taxi travel as part of your business, regardless of your GST turnover. If you are eligible to register you will need to collect GST or (PST, “Registration as a Vendor”).

#8 Compliance, Standards, Permits, OH& S Legal Requirements and Licenses are often overlooked and the costs in implementing them can mean they are avoided. Determine whether there are special permits or licenses in your municipality, State or Country.

You’re not going to be the perfect entrepreneur, nobody is. But in order to make yourself the best entrepreneur you can be, consider ways to compensate for any weaknesses you might have.

IMPORTANT STEPS

TO STARTING YOUR SMALL BUSINESS #9 Develop the marketing

#10 Set up your business bank

materials you outlined in your Business Plan. They should include at least a company Logo, business card, website, brochure, advert, social media eg. Facebook page. Many printing companies have online design resources that you can use for free. You may hear the term ‘Identity package’ this is your logo, business card and letterhead. You may also need a ‘Press kit’ this can include letters of introduction, biography sheets, press releases, articles and a brochure. A mistake many businesses make today is forgetting that it is an electronic age, printed materials aren’t enough. You need a website that looks professional, matches your printed material and has great copy. You’ll also want to make sure it’s optimised for search engines. Social media like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter are all simple to use and effective marketing tools. Facebook is often used to find a business these day and a great way to build a loyal returning customer base.

account and record-keeping system. Your banker may need to see your incorporation documents if applicable, and you should probably set up more than one account so you can keep track of your finances better for different expenses. Record-keeping is required, and can be done manually, on a basic spreadsheet or with software like MYOB or Quick Books. Remember you need a filing system for financial records (payable and receivable), client information, suppliers, legal and insurance records, payroll, ordering and stock. Determine how all of these records are going to be kept.

#11 Insurance.

There are many different types of insurance, your company will need at least one. You need to consider public liability, equipment insurance, vehicle insurance. Then if you have staff on payroll you may need to arrange Workers Compensation Insurance.

If you are a sole trader or operate a business partnership, you are not eligible for Workers’ Compensation insurance so sickness and accident or income protection insurance is worth considering.

#12 Set out your terms and conditions and document them on quotes, invoices or in a letter. You may wish to get legal advice or you may find you can research this yourself initially. You should have already researched suppliers when you were doing your feasibility study, so now is the time to contact them and ensure you meet their terms.

#13 Decide where your business will be located. You may need to lease a business’ space. Alternatively, you could choose to start your business from home if it’s feasible. There are advantages and disadvantages to starting your business from home. You have tax write-offs and these days it is far more acceptable.

#14 Purchase supplies and office equipment. Don’t underestimate the need to be organised and have everything at hand. You can’t print out a quote and get it to a client fast if you don’t simply have a spare printer cartridge, envelopes, paper etc.

Starting a new business can be daunting. The most important planning step you can make is to get good reliable support. Tap into the help and guidance of the people you know, Accountants, IT experts, Web Design experts, Marketing experts, most friends don’t mind helping someone get a head start. As long as you show appreciation and dedication you may be surprised at how many will step up and help you.

WHY SHOULD YOU WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN? The idea of writing a Business Plan is extremely overwhelming to many small business operators. This is hardly surprising given the breadth of information a Business Plan covers. So why? A business plan is a written document that ‘explains’ and ‘analyses’ an existing or proposed business venture. Business Plans are used as decision-making tools to assist in internal communication with various stakeholders or the management team. It can also be used to communicate with potential investors and external advisors. It details the business owner/managers intentions, future directions and business ideas. It documents the business goals, how it operates and the outcomes expected for the business.

A Business Plan is not a static document. In fact this can be detrimental to entrepreneurial leadership. A Business Plan should be reviewed and referenced when undertaking annual strategic planning. A business plan summarises all aspects of the business planning process demonstrating the vision and strategy including the sub-plans for marketing, finance, operations and human resources. As a general rule a Business Plan should cover the following:

Marketing SWOT Mission Goals Objectives

Competitor Analysis

Financials and targets

Target Market Analysis

Business Plan

Marketing Strategy

Operational Plan

EMPOWERED AND BEAUTIFUL BREAKING THE SILENCE ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE www.empoweredandbeautiful.com

Empowered and Beautiful is a website and Facebook page created in April 2012 by an immensely brave young woman Joi Partain. She decided to channel her tragic experience into a forum and support service for women like herself, survivors of domestic violence. How often have you been watching the tv and something comes on that is so disturbing that you grab the remote and change the channel? We all do it, I know I do, anything involving children suffering is my trigger. I simply cannot watch anything like that. However, I recently discovered a website that forced me to NOT look away, to face a few of my demons and watch and read and take notice. Daily I read the often ‘anonymous’ stories sent to the ‘Empowered and Beautiful’ site to be shared on their Facebook page. An overwhelming number of stories flood into this page by women willing to share their story to warn others and to provide comfort to other woman who have suffered similar fates. Each day I open the page and a sense of dread floods over me as I scroll down anticipating the heinous abuse these girls, children, wives and girlfriends have endured, survived, or worse are still silently experiencing and in a state of helplessness asking the Empowered and Beautiful supporters for guidance. Occasionally the stories are written by a friend, mother, sister of a victim of domestic violence that has not made it, the victim who has been taken in some gruesome circumstance that not even a Hollywood movie could concoct. Each day I force myself to read them, to understand, to empathise and with tears streaming I like the 21,000

strong supporters send them a message of support and friendship, trying to give them a sense that in this forum ‘Empowered and Beautiful’ they have found a true community of women that 1. Believe them, 2. Stand with them in support of their plight.

I am just one of an over 21,000 strong support network that this young woman Joi Partain has banded together in just 6 months through a collective compassion and experience of domestic violence to support one another and ‘Break the Silence’. When this young woman was being beaten senseless by her then boyfriend I am sure she never imagined her near fatal beating would be the catalyst for one of the most rapidly growing support networks many of us have seen in social media.

The constant intrusion of the media, of the doctors poking my body, of everyone asking “Why did you stay? Why didn’t you leave?”

Naturally, I fell overboard for him. My friend Rachel offered us cheaper rent at her house in Marianna County. Since I was the only one working, I took the offer and Jon agreed to move with me. Our first month living there was awesome. It was fun living with my girlfriend, my baby and my guy. Jon got a job but started drinking heavily. At first, it was just arguments like any regular couple; but then he started to call me names, to yell at me, louder and louder until one night, he slapped me across the face. I cried and the next day he told me how awful he felt about hitting me. He said he was sorry over and over. I believed him. I brushed it off as just a crazy drunk night. But a week later, the scene repeated itself and the cycle of violence began, week after week, every time he drank. Jon’s outbursts became more violent. Verbal abuse became physical abuse. Slapping turned into punching. And we started to spiral down. I didn’t know what to do so I shared what was going on with my friends. My best friend Rachel dismissed it as crazy talk and the other friends did not believe me. They loved Jon, they couldn’t accept the fact the he had a dark side. One day we were invited to a pool party. It seemed like a good idea until I saw Jon pounding down a bottle of whiskey in the car. Halfway through the party he started calling me names and putting me down until eventually, he punched me so hard that I fell to the ground. This was the first time he hit me in public. After this, the owner of the house asked us to leave. Our friends separated us and it was only then that he told my friends he was going to kill me. He said this again and again. Finally, my friends believed what I had told them. I left the party with my friend Tammy who offered to put me and my baby girl up for a couple of days. During those days I ignored Jon’s hourly calls and numerous text messages. I ignored his “I love you’s” and his “I’m sorry’s.” But he eventually convinced me to go over to talk. At midnight, at the end of my 12-hour shift, I went to the house. It was unlocked, dark, and unusually quiet. I yelled “anyone home?” No answer. I set my baby down in the crib then headed to the bedroom where I found Jon passed out on the floor. I nudged him with my foot two or three times. He woke up, glared at me and started yelling. But this time I was standing up for myself. I was tired of his crap. He looked at me and said.”I want to bash your face in” he scared me and I ran to the kitchen looking for a knife. I turned to him with the knife raised. “Jon if you lay another hand on me I’ll make sure

I thought he had gone for a walk. I was lying on a mattress on the floor still clutching my knife when I heard the door rip open. It was Jon. He ran toward me with a golf club raised over his head. The first blows went to my arms, the knife flew out of my hand. I tried to scream but nothing came out of my mouth; only a slight screechy sound. His blows grew harder. I was finally able to flip over onto my belly where then he continued to hit me on my back. No matter how hard I pushed up on my arms I wasn’t moving. My arms were shattered from fending off the blows. Finally he stopped and walked out the room. I heard the baby crying. Oh God, he’s going to hurt the baby, I thought. “Don’t you touch her,” I screamed as I pushed up as hard as I could but still I couldn’t even move an inch. The door came open again and Jon appeared with another golf club. This time I couldn’t fend off the blows. He just started striking me over and over in my back my head my face. There was so much blood! I began to drown in it. Finally I heard my roommate by the door. She was standing there in shock. Jon stopped, handed my girlfriend the cell phone, and told her to call the cops. He’d be waiting outside. I called out for my baby. “Where’s the baby? Get the baby! please call an ambulance.” Then I passed out.

By the 3rd meeting I finally told them what happened to me, and for the first time, I felt truly validated. People listened to me without judging me, without calling me a liar or over dramatic, but actually supporting me. It felt wonderful. After a few months of going to the support group meetings, I shared my story with 200 high schoolers. When I was done, everyone from the crowd surrounded me and started telling me how inspirational I was and a few of them even cried. All of a sudden I pulled my advocate to the side and told her: “I know what stopped me from putting my car into a tree.” “What was it?” she asked. “Because women victims of domestic violence who are either too scared to find help or are ignored, need a voice. BREAKING THE SILENCE ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

We talk to the woman behind Empowered and Beautiful a rapidly growing International network, established to provide true solitarity amoungst victims of Domestic Violence. What we discovered is the personification of Empowered and truly Beautiful with a passion to Break the Silence. Domestic violence, what are the stats? What really goes on?

Domestic Violence is the illegitimate use of physical force and/or control tactics within a relationship that is intimate, familiar or cohabitating. There are 5 types of abuse. All of these types of abuse are done for the purpose of gaining power and control over the victim. These types of abuse are different but are often inflicted upon a victim in various combinations. This included Physical abuse, Emotional abuse, Economical abuse, Sexual Abuse, and Psychological Abuse. Statistics show that in the United States, one in four women experience domestic violence in their lifetime. An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. Almost one-third of female homicide victims that are reported in police records are killed by an intimate partner. Females who are 20-24 years of age are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence. Many more survivors of domestic violence are not reporting their abusers to the police or accessing services at Domestic Violence Services due to reasons such as shame, fear, or being prevented from doing so by their abusers.

Why did you start ‘Empowered and Beautiful’ and the social media forums like facebook?

I’ve been a victims advocate for domestic violence for 3 years. But I didn’t pick this line of work. It picked me! I am a victim of domestic violence. 4 years ago I was brutally beaten by my exboyfriend, Breaking both my arms and hands. Including every bone in my face. I even lost my left eye. I had over 40 hours worth of plastic and reconstructive surgeries and only God knows how much therapy to make me right again. He may have broken my bones but he didn’t break my spirit. My ex got ‘Premeditated Attempted Murder in the First Degree’...that’s just a brief description of what I’ve been through. I have been taught not to be ashamed of it. But, to embrace it. I have created a website where I can share my story and others as well. In 2012 ‘EmpoweredAndBeautiful’ was lunched. The website was built as a Self Help Centre for people of abuse. Here we don’t have to be alone and everyone has a place where they can look to without being judged. All of us not only survived, we have taken a stand Against Domestic Violence. We all need to bring awareness to communities and help others like ourselves. No one deserves to go through what we have, and most of all, no one deserves to go through it alone.

We all have a story that needed to be shared. The EAB website also includes facts, self care tips, stories, and Help Resources.

(our) website. I’m hoping to be up in the 50,000 by the end of this year!

What sort of people use your facebook page and website?

I believe these sites are needed for people who are afraid to get help, they need to know the resources in their area. Most people don’t feel like it will get that bad. But I’m hoping with all the stories and experiences being shared they can get a new outlook on it. These websites are created to let them know there is help out there and they’re not alone. Domestic Violence does not judge gender, race or religion. It can happen to anyone!

The huge majority of people are young females who use the website for personal use or just trying to find help. We also have quite a few males email us as well. Sharing their stories or actually complimenting us. The majority of our emails are people asking for help or providing positive feedback. The social media part of the site is fairly new only about 6 months old. I got the inspiration for the social media part of the website from a girl named Melissa. She was stabbed 32 times and started a ‘Support Melissa’ page on Facebook. She is now also an advocate for domestic violence. The ‘Empowered and Beautiful’ facebook numbers haven’t always been so high. The website had its ups and down moments. After I went on the Steve Wilco show I gained quite a few likes through viewers who watched the show.

Sometime in March 2013 ‘Empowered and Beautiful’ went viral and numbers climbed to in excess of 21,000 and still climbing, many of whom are victims and survivors, why? I received an email from another social media Facebook page The Cyber Gypsy. The woman who owns this Facebook page Jamie asked if she can help with my website and promote it. Her Facebook with 20000+ members had a big impact on EAB. The website just started to take off after that. Jamie showed me how to work out all the kinks of social media. That’s when I figured out how to add people to help you with your page (via admin). So I sent a email out to the first two fans that I noticed commented a lot on my page. They were both survivors of abuse. These two survivors are still a part of a now 10 member team! My team includes 3 certified Domestic Violent Advocates, 2 men, 3 overseas ‘admins’ from England & Australia. I’m really not too sure how my website got so popular in Australia but it did. I’ve gotten a ton of messages from people in Australia! And the rest of my members are either experienced or have a passion to help people. A huge part of the website success is my ‘admin’s. They have been so good to me and my website or should I say

Why are these sorts of sites needed?

4. What are the warning signs? There are many signs of an abusive relationship. The most telling sign is fear of your partner. If you feel like you have to walk on eggshells around your partner, constantly watching what you say and do in order to avoid a blow-up, chances are your relationship is unhealthy and abusive. Other signs that you may be in an abusive relationship include a partner who belittles you or tries to control you, and feelings of selfloathing, helplessness, and desperation. Warning signs of an abusive partner can include: humiliating or yelling at you, criticising you and putting you down, treating you so badly that you’re embarrassed for your friends or family to see it. If they ignore or put down your opinions or accomplishments. They blame you for their own abusive behaviour. They see you as property or a sex object, rather than as a person.

Helen is a survivor & ‘Admin’ for EAB

Continued... Where is professional help? There are many ways you can find help. First is to call local law-enforcement and just ask what’s your local Domestic Violence Centre’s phone number? In the United States and in the majority of counties and cities there is a Centre that is free of charge and have lots of resources. You could call the national hotline to find out about your cities Domestic Violence shelter! Now it’s not just a shelter they also help outreach participants as well with Counselling, Financial support, Support groups, or just someone to talk to! These Centres are usually 100% free of charge. The two major numbers and websites that we support are: National Domestic Violence Hotline USA at 1−800−799−SAFE (7233) or TTY 1−800−787−3224Hotline advocates are available for victims and anyone calling on their behalf to provide crisis intervention, safety planning, information and referrals to agencies in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Assistance is available in English and Spanish with access to more than 170 languages through interpreter.

What can they do is ‘be there for them no matter what’. Support them and their decisions and be there to pick up the pieces after they are broken. What they should not do: Judge them, criticise them, not listen to them, and tell them what to do! At this point in their life they need all the support they can get. If you express negativity ‘to a victim’ they are more than likely to cut you out for good.

How can victims gaining independence, confidence and financial stability? Getting stability is hard. But once again this is where a strong support system come in. I was able to get up on my feet through family and friends helping me financially and emotionally!

EMPOWERED AND BEAUTIFUL

International Help. www.hotpeachpages.net has a world map of every Domestic Violence Centre on earth!!!! How can a victim gain help from friends and family? Sometimes family can be extremely hard to talk to. Believe me I understand this! Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone, yet the problem is often overlooked, excused, or denied. This is especially true when the abuse is psychological, rather than physical. If you express your feelings to family and you get a negative reaction, and they just don’t seem like they understand, in my own opinion just go to someone else. The counsellor or a friend. But the ‘Number 1’ thing you need when you’re in the situation is a strong support system. Whether it be your family, Counsellor or a friend you need a strong support system to get through this.

“ I have made a promise to myself. I’ll be the voice for that woman who stays silent after being struck.” Joi Partain

Digital Witness - The one app we hope you never have to use! What is Digital Witness™ ? Digital Witness is a personal security and safety app currently available for iPhone and Android phones. With the push of a single button (Android version), Digital Witness sends a photograph, your GPS coordinates, Google Maps location, and message to up to three security contacts who can respond immediately to your call for help. Your security contact can attempt to call you back to check that you are OK. If you do not answer they can check the picture, note your location and call police to respond to your call for help. All in no more than a few seconds!

Digital Witness™ exploits the popularity and technology of smartphones to enhance personal safety and security. Ideally Digital Witness™ will become a deterrent. Potential perpetrators may in many cases be deterred from committing an act of violence if they know that they will be identified, caught and punished. In the worse case scenario, where someone does become a victim, Digital Witness will provide immediate notification to loved ones and authorities that they are under threat, as well as photographic evidence of their attacker and location.

Why Digital Witness™ ? From time to time we all find ourselves in situations where we feel unsafe or under threat. Random assaults, kidnappings, rapes and even the occasional murder make headline news on an all too regular basis. Personal security for themselves and for loved ones has become an issue of concern for just about everyone in today’s world. The perpetrators of such crimes are often emboldened by the belief that they can get away with their violent actions, unidentified and unpunished. Even survivors of violent attacks are often too traumatised by their experience to clearly identify their attackers.

ADDRESSING THE ABUSER NOT JUST THE ABUSED ...from the Empowered & Beautiful Community Abusers often have a mental illness, addictions, anger issues, behaviour issues or narcissistic behaviour. These need to be addressed to ensure the cycle of violence is broken for good So we asked the 21,000 supporters and survivors of Empowered and Beautiful these questions. What is being done by the authorities, family, friends of the abuser to ensure they do not become repeat offenders? (Which nearly all of them are). What is being done to identify AT RISK abusers? Where has the mental health system gone wrong? Where can families and friends go to get the ABUSER the professional help they need BEFORE they hurt someone, or hurt someone AGAIN?

Two quotes by a recovering ABUSER “As a former perpetrator and victim of Domestic Violence the strength of Domestic Violence is in its concealment, the more it is concealed behind closed doors and from others, the stronger it is, that is why Domestic Violence should be reported by anyone and everyone... When Domestic Violence is brought into the light the perpetrator loses their power and control over the victim, the more and more the light illuminates the situation the weaker the power and control the perpetrator has over the victim. Now whether this is done by the victim, next door neighbour, family member, friend or even the

perpetrator themselves, exposing Domestic Violence puts it in the spotlight to recognise it for what it is.” “Most perpetrators have a level of awareness where they want to stop committing Domestic Violence against their victims and so they go through the Domestic Violence cycle and make the promises that they will never do it again etc, but this level of awareness or ‘light’ it isn’t strong or effective enough to weaken the strength of the perpetrators strongest ally, concealment. It will always take a light that is greater than what is being contained within the situation that has the strength to weaken the Domestic Violence. A light needs to come from outside the closed doors to weaken the perpetrators power and control over the victim, in other words, somebody else needs to know about it to the point they interject into the situation. The first step I did was ring Menslines [in Australia] myself and began getting counselling for my problem. I then attended men’s groups that dealt with DV issues and a broad range of other topics, I saw counsellors in person, spoke openly and candidly about being a perpetrator to friends, family and others until it became public knowledge... By keeping this ‘thing’ in the light I have managed to weaken its hold on me, and everyday I feel a new person emerge from within that is kind, gentle, loving and caring that wouldn’t want to harm anyone. “

“I know someone who chose “I can’t get him help. himself to go into He needs to get it... that will be the only therapy as he didn’t like being out way he will stop, I of control and in think if you push them for help it will danger of behaving (be) used against violently again.” you and the only way someone can get help is if they want it, if they think they have a problem and most abusers don’t think they need help”.

Focus on family and friends in regard to the abuser... many abusers come from a family history of abuse in one form or another, dysfunctional and lacking responsibility generation after generation. Friends either support this behaviour or choose to overlook it as not their issue.

“In the UK we have different types of perpetrator programmes such as ‘Integrated Domestic Abuse Programme’ run by Probation and the ‘SAFE Programme’. Stopping Aggression in the Family Environment. I am a DVA worker (and survivor) so have extensive knowledge of the success rate.... this is virtually nil. Alcohol and substance misuse is not a casual factor for DV it just lowers inhibitions and gives men (in the main) an excuse. Societal attitudes, the mass media, patriarchy and misogyny are all contributory and causal factors for DV as well as personal experiences and exposure to abuse. It’s so hard to rehabilitate perpetrators.”

LILY Life & Style OD “Statistically the personality type of an abuser is narcissistic and will seek careers in the judicial system, law enforcement, counselling, therapist, military etc... So in fact the very people you seek help and support from may also be abusers. A narcissist requires positions of power and control not only in their personal lives but in their professions as well. This is not to say that everyone in these careers is an abuser but the statistics are there.”

“Part of the problem is that it is taught from generation to generneration. I was taught how to take abuse by my mother and I passed it on to my daughter just like the abuser teaches there children to be abusers the abused learn to be abused.”

097

“Being an abuser is an addiction, and it needs to be dealt with like any other drug. Rehab, medication, counselling and lots of classes. Even then I don’t really think a person is fully 100% fixed. (If you’re) able to hurt a person that much once you’re capable of falling back into the same patterns later on in life, like a drug addict lapsing...there’s not much out there for abusers. There are a few classes , a few books here and there and the psychologist, but that’s about it. There’s no rehab. I’ve never heard of any type of abuser support group. It is a very overlooked and ignored subject. So to tell you the truth. We can get that person out of that relationship. But then you will gain ANOTHER abused person because the abuser will continue to date. And then eventually it possibly leads to a murder. I believe the world needs to Open Their Eyes and start HELPING ABUSERS to stop their Addiction and their need for POWER and CONTROL.”. (Joi Partain, Empowered & Beautiful)

“Human Services ordered my abuser to attend Anger Management classes, he never did, they never followed up. They never met with him, only me. They thought ‘well she is healthy and normal’, so they did nothing, they made it worse.”

BUILD A WHOLE FOOD KITCHEN ON A BUDGET Daisy Luther www.theorganicprepper.ca

Making a trip to the grocery store these days is like running a gauntlet. From one side you are assaulted by food-like substances in brightly labelled packages, some even touting exaggerated health benefits from the toxins within. From the other side, you are gouged and poked by cleverly marketed “natural” foods that are 4 times the price of conventional foods. When you change directions to avoid one onslaught, you are immediately attacked by the other. We’re at war and the grocery store is the battlefield. What’s a frugal whole food shopper to do? Lots of people write to me and say, “I’d love to eat the way you do, but I can barely afford regular groceries. There’s no way I could afford all that healthy stuff.” Good food might be expensive, but as the saying goes, ‘Have you checked out the price of illness lately?’ If you don’t believe you can afford to eat healthfully, consider the high price of being sick and lethargic. Calculate the cost of days missed from work for illness. Add up the price of having no energy to play with your kids or to do things that would help you to save money. Think about the exorbitant prices of medical care. Many of these things are completely avoidable – all you have to do is feed your body real food and you will be astounded at the resultant glowing health. How much money have you spent over the last year fighting ill health that could have been

avoided through good nutrition? So what can you do? 1.Buy local. Ideally, you never need to set foot in a grocery store. Change your shopping habits and buy from local farmers, either directly from their farm or from a farmer’s market. You will get your produce at the optimum time, right after it was picked. As well, you can directly ask the farmer about his practices. Sometimes farmers grow organically and they just haven’t gone through the expensive and highly regulated certification programs. 2. Join a food co-op or CSA. This is a win-win, because it helps out the farmers and it helps out your family. 3. Buy produce that is in-season. Purchasing food that is in-season is not just cheaper, it is nutritionally beneficial too. 4. Grow as much as you can in the space you have. Plant a sunny windowsill with salad veggies and herbs, grow a container garden on a balcony, or turn your yard into a mini-farm. Every bite of food you grow yourself is a revolutionary act.

LILY Life & Style OD GMOs (Genetically Modified Organism) have been proven to cause cancer, tumors, organ failure, and death. Many of the additives included in the products proudly displayed on grocery store shelves have been banned in other countries because of the health consequences they wreak. Top this with a produce section absolutely drenched in pesticides that have been proven to result in cancer, hormone disruptions, and learning problems in children. Here are a few realistic tips that do not include relocating to 30 acres of prime Springfed organic farmland. 5. Plan your menu AFTER shopping, not before. This allows you to stay on budget because you aren’t shopping for special ingredients to make pre-planned meals. You can take advantage of the best deals and plan your meals around those. This can also help by keeping those unplanned budget purchases from going to waste in your crisper drawer while you carry on with your planned menu. 6. Drink pure water. We purchase 5 gallon jugs or fill them in a spring when that option is available.

11. Don’t buy anything with an ingredients list greater than 5 items. The more items on the ingredients list, the more likely you are to be consuming someone’s chemistry project. Even things that sound relatively innocuous, like “natural flavourings” can be, at best, unappetising, and at worst, harmful. 12. Cook from scratch. Cooking from scratch doesn’t have to be as time-consuming as you might expect. I don’t spend hours each day slaving in the kitchen. Spend a weekend afternoon prepping your food for the week ahead and you can have weekday dinners on the table in less than half an hour. 13. Some conventionally grown foods are okay. Learn about the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen. Some foods have a fairly low pesticide load, even when conventionally grown. ‘Dirty’ being apples, celery, sweet bell peppers, peaches, strawberries, nectarines, grapes, spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, blueberries, potatoes, green beans, kale. ‘Clean’ being onions, sweet corn, pineapples, avocado, cabbage, sweet peas, asparagus, mangoes, eggplant, kiwi, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, watermelon, mushrooms.

7. Buy staples in bulk. Organic grains like brown rice, wheat berries, cornmeal, barley and oatmeal can be purchased in bulk quantities. This reduces the price to lower than or equivalent to the smaller conventional packages that are offered in your local grocery store. 8. Add some lower priced protein options. Add value-priced wholesome protein with beans, farm fresh eggs, homemade yogurt and cheese, nuts, and milk. 9. Stop eating out. Just one McCrud meal for a family of 4 is between $20-30. Delivered pizza is about $25 plus a tip. The $45-55 that you would spend for this “convenience” could buy a lot of whole foods. 10. Get into the habit of bringing a cooler with you. If you are going to be out running errands for the day, load up a cooler with healthy snacks, water, and even a picnic lunch. This is the perfect answer to the lament from the back seat, “I’m huuuunnnngryyyy.”

14. You will actually eat LESS when you feed your body. Part of the reason that the obesity problem is epidemic in North America is because people are desperately seeking nutrients from depleted food-like substances. Their bodies are crying out, “I’m hungry!” even though they have consumed thousands of calories.

17. Eat leftovers. The act of eating leftovers is almost unheard of, it seems. But if you put aside small amounts of leftovers in a freezer container, you can make “soup” for a meal that is basically free because it came from items that would have otherwise been discarded. Use larger amounts of leftovers for lunch boxes or a “buffet-style” meal for the family.

15. Brown bag your lunches. When I worked outside the home, most of my co-workers ate out every single day. They often invited me along, saying that a certain restaurant offered “healthy” food. The thing is, the price of that presumably healthy food was 4-6 times higher than the healthy food that I had brought from home.

18. “Shop” from nature. You might be surprised to learn how many edible plants are growing wild in your own neighborhood. Even city dwellers can often find things to forage. When we lived in the city, we used to pick up fallen walnuts from a tree in a local park.

16. Preserve food. Whether you grow it yourself, rescue it from the “last day of sale” rack at the grocery store, or buy it by the bushel from a farmer, learning to preserve your own food allows you to buy in bulk and squirrel some of that delicious food away for the winter ahead. Canning, dehydrating, and freezing are all methods to help extend the summer harvest for use later in the year.

If you’re ready to make a change to a whole foods lifestyle, don’t let your budget hold you back! Take a long hard look at what you are spending on takeaway coffees and lattes, fast food, delivered pizza, microwave meals, and frozen dinners that you shove into the oven. Look at the beverage budget you spend at the grocery store every week, and keep track. You might be pleasantly surprised when your budget goes down, instead of up!
