INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

3

Nesharim Interchange, Israel

“The challenge of this project was to find a way to integrate a vast and complex infrastructural intervention visually and functionally into the surrounding landscape” 1 My part in the team was to design the topography in the areas captured between the roads and ramps to allow the planting of massive groves of carob and olive trees in large flat areas. In addition, I was designing the topography of the slopes in a way that would enable the planting of native species of grasses and perennial bushes. Moreover, to highlight the seasonal river which runs through the interchange to increase its ecological value as a wildlife corridor. (1) Shlomo Aronson Architects

Jo Alon Road, Beer-sheva, Israel The Jo-Alon road, located in the Isreali ‘capital of the desert’, also known as the city of Beer Sheva, required the design of vegetation to provide a lively, colourful experience in the desert for users of this route. The aim was to find plants that can give a mass of colour whilst thriving in the desert climate. This includes strong solar radiation, limestone soil, cold nights, and extreme heatwaves. The road is found in a car intensive enviornment with high concetrations of pollution, which required a collection of plants that could suvrive and flourish in such unforgiving conditions. Shrubs like Carissa macrocarpa, Vitex agnus-castus, herbaceous like Chrysanthemoides incana, Limonium perezii, Plectranthus neochilus, Hesperaloe parviflora, Verbena bonariensis, and annuals like Tagetes patula and Linaria maroccana were chosen as they fit those criteria. The design with those plants provides a play of secondary colours (purple and orange) at a vast scale meant to be seen while travelling at high speeds.

PARKS PROJECTS

Application fo r Master Landscape Architecture

Jo Alon Park, Beer-sheva, Israel

The local park was designed as a unique experience for the benefit of the residents in the neighbourhood, looking to escape from the intense solar radiation, massive heatwaves and enjoy the outdoor in a green, shady, and colder environment. The challenging desert climate led to the vegetation design, aiming to give a natural solution for shadding and cooler areas by planting clusters of trees around the main functional areas alongside architectural solutions like pergolas. Therefore, groups of deciduous and evergreen trees such as Brachychiton discolour, Pistacia Chinensis and Bauhinia variegata planted on the grass lawn in different places; Fraxinus pennsylvanica trees planted in linear along the main paths in the park. Moreover, the need for more playing and sitting areas led to massive planting of natural grass lawn that also reduces the use of built surfaces in exposed locations and contribute to a fresh and cooler feeling.

Remez Park, Beer-sheva, Isreal

Remez garden is a historic garden in the old city of Beer-Sheva located as a sequel to the Great Ottoman Mosque that was built in 1906. An ancient well was exposed and incorporated as part of the garden’s development plan during the works. The planting plan that I designed included restoring the local native vegetation that characterised the old days alongside the conservation of mature trees. The central plaza with a water fountain highlighted with the planting of mature Phoenix dactylifera, sitting areas emphasized with clusters of native trees as Pistacia atlantica and Acer obtusifolium. The orchard planted with native fruit trees like Ficus carica, Punica granatum, citrus and Olea europaea trees, as well as with and local herbs as Salvia, Lavandula and Origanum.

RURAL GARDEN PROJECTS

Kariti Garden, Timorim, Israel

Jane Smith

A typical perimeter garden found in new rural areas, where new detached houses are built on a plot of 1/4 acre, leaving around 16ft from each side of the house. Depending on the house’s architecture, the planned garden than is trying to include as many features as possible. Since gardens in Israel play a significant role for young families, that spend much of their time outdoors, accommodate and entertaining others families with children. In this garden, due to the house’s plan and the topography, an ‘English court’ was developed to maximize the use of the area and to create a separate space for the children to play. At the same time, the adults can enjoy sitting in the upper part of the garden without losing eyesight from the children below. Moreover, the built surface was designed to be used as multiple changing areas, and as it a shady corner, it can be used to open a ping-pong table or set an upper pool in the summer while others can sit and relax under the tree. The entrance was designed as a wide space that can also act as a gathering place for teens, with Populus nigra italica trees to mark the entrance and a small balcony following the kitchen, hidden from the street, with morning sun for breakfast or shady afternoon for a cup of coffee.

Navot Garden, Kfar Menahem, Israel In this perimeter garden, the client’s main interest was to form a separation from their neighbours to allow their privacy. Due to the architectural plans, the entertainment area outside and kitchen was directed to the neighbours, and therefore they needed a solution that will work with the nature of the plot. A wooden custom fence was designed to prevent direct eyesight and on the other hand, the changing in the wood stripe’s width and height is giving an openness feeling to the lowland landscape view. On the other side of the plot, an area for a shed, hen’s house and raising beds was designed following the residence’s hobby to maintain a small kitchen garden.

Bardea Garden, Jaffo, Israel

A conserved courtyard located on the shoreline in a mixed neighbourhood in Jaffo redesigned as part of a renovation of a listed house. The designed plan aimed to allow a comfortable accommodation area with a view to the sea alongside keeping their privacy and enjoyment from the cooling breeze. In the process, a few options were checked to place a big dining table that can host the big family and a living area in a position that would not interfere with conserving the mature Ficus carica tree in the spot. Another essential element was to create shade and shelter from the intense solar radiation. For that, a metal pergola was designed for vines to climb and create a stunning green cover with dappled light and shade. The Vitis vinifera is amongst the native plants that was chosen to use in the garden that resists the salty, humid wind from the sea.

Appartment, Tel-Aviv, Israel A northern, small and narrow balcony at Tel-Aviv that the resident, who suffers from fear of hight, asked to keep distance from the metal balustrade and close the view to the ground. Bamboo panels attached to the balustrade and metal planters hang on the handrail with herbaceous that tolerate shading and half shading condition. Plants with various green shade as Hedera helix, Ficus pumila, Viola odorata planted and designed to grow down to create a stunning green cover with dappled light and shadow. Clusters of eclectic pots planted with green shaded shrubs, located alongside the inner part of the balcony to complete the look.

INDOOR GARDENING PROJECTS Appartment, Ramat-Gan, Israel

An indoor greenery design project that completes a restrained and solid designed apartment at the centre of Ramat-Gan, the designer asked to insert a green touch that will be easy to maintain and contribute to the apartment’s look. Leafy green houseplants in metallic pots were added to give the connection with the grey shades elements in the apartment and the wooden floor. As the apartment was well lighted, various houseplants could fit in term of light requirements, plants like Ficus lyrata and Hydrangea planted in the living room and Ficus pumila, Senecio and Rhoicissus rhomboidea were planted in small pots in the kitchen and were designed to drop.

As an amateur in botanical illustration, I enjoy the experience of drawing using different techniques and materials. For example, finding the variance between watercolour and acrylic.
