Implication of Musical Towers at an Urban Scale- Orchestral Composition Each tower has a specific instrument applied to it to allow for an orchestral piece to be played. As one walks through the city they witness the various sounds according to where they are standing in space. The communication at times is random to allow for improvisation and at other times specific pieces are played.

Proposed Timetable for Tower 1 String Instruments and Greek Dancing-Sirto-a common ritual between the two communities of this neighbourhood Sound projection hours are organised depending on the existing soundscape of Nicosia(Mosque and Church) to avoid overlap. The new sounds which would inhabit the city would introduce an informal level of play in a site of tension.
During School Hours A space of 'negotiaton ' and 'gathering'of the older generation where musical knowledge, debates and news are shared

The Urban Orchestra operates at special concert dates, introducing festival celebrations in the city.
Aims: Creation of 3 dimensional drawings which show how the towers become a composition/orchestra/musical instruments in the landscape. Vocal perfomances from people on existing balconies of Nicosia's urban fabric.
Prevailing Wind
Tower 6 Follows up with an ensemble of drum perfomances End Point
Whole piece heard best at this point because of the wind directiongeneral seating area at this point Tower 4 Follows up with an ensemble of clarinet perfomances Tower 2 Follows up with solo saxophone perfomance
Tower 5 Follows up with an ensemble of flute perfomances Vocal perfomances from people on existing balconies of Nicosia's urban fabric.
Starting Point
Tower 1 Commences with solo cello perfomance
Tower 3 Follows up with an ensemble of violin perfomances
The urban walker picks up on individual compositions until he reaches the end point.
Proposed Composition for Urban Orchestra- Ode to Joy (Inspired by Flash Mob-Nicosia Youth Symphony Orchestra) Faneromeni Square- May16-8.15pm Screen which shows the conductor Buffer Line
Daily activities occur throughout the day within the towers, however there are certain times in the day where sound interplay/conversation/improvisation occurs between the towers which are in close proximity to each other, Improvisation Delivers Conversation/Dialogue/Communication
Times of Informal Sound Interplay Projected into the City:
6:00pm-6.30pm Sunset Hours
11.30-12.00 Near Noon Hours
Prevailing Wind
An individual type of instrument is applied to every tower to increase the intersest in communication and various types of sounds/notes. The application of the instrument can be interchanged between towers.
The urban walker hears individual musical notes which communicate amongst the towers. Improvisation and practice become a perfomance
There is no start and end point, the sounds at this point are an informal composition of communicating musical notes
Urban Model -Concept of all 6 towers together communicating Future and Current Status of Nicosia
How are sound waves represented physically?
Context engraved
Future situation as a unified city -towers act as points of connecting the city -perspex
Current status of Nicosia -divided city -buffer zonewood
Urban Scale /Perspective View of Nicosia with the towers.
Urban Scale of the towers and the way they interweave with the existing fabric of nisoasia.
Performative physical models. Water experiment as a tuner? Could this be a physiacl model and drawing together? Can it perform? will it make a sound?
Tower 2 which coincides with tower 1 in terms of how the two towers will communicate.
Model 1
Both modelled on site
Model 2
Tower 6- Overview Compartment Drawing
Model the various compartments? testing them as instruments?
Lift Shaft
Reinforced concrete funnels which amplify sound outwards
Outward sound passes through one of the resonant chambers directing it into the roof chamber allowing for a unique quality of resonance and reverberation
Reinforced concrete sound collectors which are bolted onto the steel structure canopy
Floor can be opened up into curiosity cabinets where instruments are stored
Circulation supported onto frame
An outdoor harp faces a parabolic curve which can be played upon. The parabola focuses sound into the neighbour tower.
Library atrium -shelving unit becomes oart of thesteel structure
Composite outer frame structure made out of reinforced concrete, steel, dampers and tensile cab les. Inner concrete sheels are supported onto this
The Drum- A reinfocement steel bar mesh folds over a fiberglass mould which is then sprayed onupon with concrete. Vibrations from dancing shoes in this space reflect from the floating floor onto the concave walls which then disperse outwards to the city
Reinforced concrete shell structure which is then finished with greek mosaic tiles to increase the reflectivity and loudness of the sounds.
Funnel-Reinforced concrete shell structure which is then finished with timber on the internal side.
Reinforced concrete shells which are finished with sandstone.
Reinforced concrete resonant chambers-Rainwater can collect here adding to the strength of the base and when sang into or played into the pitch and tone of the sound changes according to wtaer levels.
Auditorioum stage and seating-Reinforced concrete-Porous to absorb more sound to decrease sound reverberation. This ties with the the inverted pyramid structures.
