PROJECT 1 :

DISTINCT ELEMENTS & TERMINOLOGIES IN THE INDUSTRY

This project requires each student group to investigate one key element and conduct an indepth study to gain an adequate understanding how each term applies to the practice. The objective of this project is to ensure that as future Graduate Interior Designers, students must possess a broad vocabulary and understanding of contractual, professional and legislative terms used daily whether amongst clients, contractors, peers, authority or the general public.

PROJECT 2 :

FORUM This task is to encourage more democratic exchanges whereby in the online forum, each student has a voice that will be heard by anyone who chooses to read his or her comments. Students will experience personal and academic gains as result of their communication with their peers. The goal is for the students to gain professional interchange, and seek out ideas among their colleagues through electronic communication to facilitate the process.

FORUM 1 SUMMARY Rethinking Building Codes & Building Regulations Post-Pandemic The Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world this year changes our lifestyle. Social distancing, which requires individuals at a minimum distance of 1 meter apart forces people to rethink the arrangement of the places we live and work in. In the forum, we shared ideas of approaching covid-19 prevention through a designer’s mindset. One of the most common idea was still implementing tapes to mark safety distances on public spaces and re-layouting open workspaces and secluding it with partitions, which proves to be the standard cheaper effective ways to keep people socially distanced.

Floor social distancing stickers can be fun too.

Meanwhile, designers and engineers are also coming up with other ways of combating the Covid-19 by exploring and designing technology devices that can improve social distancing and lessen surface contact. This is important because other than just social distancing, common surface touched by a lot of people could be contaminated by an unsuspecting covid-19 carrier. Since most people are working online at home most of the time especially during the pandemic lockdown when everyone stays indoor most of the time, they seek natural ventilation for fresh air and air-circulation which can decrease the opportunity of virus contamination through air. As people also re-looking into landed houses with private backyard and high-rise residential buildings with private balconies, designers/architectures should consider future building designs with ample of openings for natural ventilations rather than relying on mechanical ventilations.

FORUM 2 SUMMARY Importance of Passive and Active Fire Protection Systems

Components of Passive Fire Protection

Fire Detection in Active Fire Protection System

There are 2 aspects involved when talking about fire safety for a building, which are the passive fire protection and active fire protection. In my opinion, to choose the more important one between the two would be impossible, and shouldn’t have even been questioned. The passive fire protection and active fire protection aids each other in order keep the occupants of the building alive in the occurrence of fire. Some elements of passive fire protection system such as compartment walls, fire doors and other structural elements of the building will help slow down the spread of fire and allow extra time for the occupants to escape the building. Meanwhile for the active fire protection system, the fire manual call point and fire alarm will alert the building occupants of fire occurrence in order for them to escape and the use of sprinklers or portable fire extinguisher would help in diminishing the fire. With just either one, fire safety in a building are not maximized at all. However, in another perspective of an existing building, especially the older ones, the owner should invest more in maintaining and having the best active fire systems to combat fire, just because the building might not have the best standard of passive fire protection today, which would be costly for renovation. But for upcoming or buildings in planning, both must be taken into consideration, more so into making sure that the passive fire protection meets the standard requirements.

FORUM 3 SUMMARY

Preliminaries Preliminaries are normally found in the Bill of Quantities of tender documents, that provides information, particulars, general obligations and liabilities, running costs, etc. of the project concerning tenderers, which are normally priced by the tenderers separately from trade or elemental bills which are integral parts of Bill of Quantities. The understanding on the importance of preliminaries will result in the accuracy of the price and contributes value to the construction, which indirectly reduces the chance of construction failure and ensures the value for money of the construction project. Preliminaries may also include pre-construction information that provides necessary detail outlay regarding subcontracting and seeking approvals for building permits, equipment leases and other items, as well as proper timeline for the achievement of construction project’s goals. Another importance of accounting a proper preliminary is to ensure that everyone is properly acknowledged and treated fairly, to make sure that subcontractors duties are acknowledged and paid on time, meanwhile to also avoid unrecognizable claims that may cause the owner/employer to suffer money loss. In conclusion, the preliminaries format should be clear on how the management, resources, establishment and general running costs have been calculated individually and how the prelims total has been derived, to ensure proper description of the required works which contributes to the smooth running and success of a project.

PROJECT 3 :

GANTT CHART

This project requires a preparation of project management in a Gantt Chart format from design initiation until final completion, based on the design project in AIDP 1 & AIDP 2. The objective of this project is to further develop management intentions through various processes of management purview designed to prepare students for professional practice (the management of contract & project). Breaking down a large task into manageable units helps the designer get the task done on time.

PROJECT 4 :

SYSTEM, SERVICES AND BY-LAW APPLICATION

This project requires the application of knowledge gained in Project 1into individual projects in AIDP1. Each regulatory, legislative or technical provision must be translated into an informative graphical presentation with dimensions, drawings (including isometrics) and materials where necessary.

SUMMARY :

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEEK

Professional Development Week was a one week event consisting of series of workshops conducted by various industry professionals which is held by Taylor’s University. As a final year student, I was given the opportunity to attend the workshops that were sectioned into general mandatory workshops and sector focused engagement workshops of my choice, which includes workshops about job hunting tips in ‘The Recruiter’s Insight’ by a Samsung representative, Financial Literacy for Fresh Graduates by a Stashaway representative, work related story sharing session in ‘Surviving Your First 30 Days and Beyond’ by a Taylor’s alumni, ‘Careers in Brand Management’ by a McDonald’s representative, career job hunting and interview tips in ‘Best Practices in Portfolio Preparation (Architectural Design and Job Interviews’ by a Veritas representative, ‘Best Process, Challenges and Career Opportunity in Business Events Industry’ by a MACEOS representative and ‘Entrepreneurship – The Journey’ by the owner of Hans Media. The relevance of the workshop to my future career and interest was the main reason of the said chosen workshops, to which some doesn’t disappoint. I was able to get insights from these industry professionals on how the recruitment in job hunting were selected and filtered, and the prospects of certain careers that relates to the Interior Architecture course that I am pursuing now or my own personal interest. While I do get valuable information from the professionals that some might not be easily found in a simple google search, one of the workshop that leaves a lasting impression was the session from Hans Media. Mr Hans Gill, the owner of Hans Media himself, humbly shares his personal thoughts and experiences in overcoming his obstacles of his entrepreneurship journey of starting his first restaurant to his success today. While I like how his experience is relatable to me and it seems most of the attendees that were present in his session feel the same too, the humble manner in which he recounts his journey and his friendliness when he gave his tips to the attendees questions was the most memorable. Listening to his journey also gave me the courage to pursue my dream career and hopefully persistent hard work and dedication would bring me the success I long for one day. The Professional Development Week has been a wonderful week, although there were a few more workshops I was interested in but I was unfortunately unable to attend due to my course’s imposing assignments. While there could be some improvements on providing more topics and sessions that are more interior or architecture related, and more speakers from the said industry, or additional given time to speakers as some were actually very generous to share but was regrettably cut short due to time constraints, nevertheless for a first-ever university wide workshop week, it has been a great and insightful event which deserves an appreciation, as it does help me in providing the information I needed to be prepared and step into the working phase of my life once I finished my studies and graduated.
