01 ARCHIECTURE THAT CARES, RETIREMENT VILLAGE AKKULAM, TVM The project aims at bringing up a retirement village which is both disabled friendly and a platform which encourages social participation of the local people. The inclusion of people of different age groups helps the elderly to become more lively and independent. This also helps them to avoid the feeling of being abandoned or the feeling of being secluded from the society and thus making them feel at home. The proposed site for the project is located in Akkulam Trivandrum. The site is approximately 12 acres loacted in a residential area with mixed urban and rural character. Akkulam being a tourist destination has a lot of advantages of improved services and infrastructure. The site is located inward away from the hustle of the city making it a perfect location for the retirement village in terms of lesser noise and air pollution. An opportunity of using an artificial water body is utilised here which makes it more lively and invites the public. The housing units are provided as individual villas with multiple levels and each level is independent and exclusive on it’s own which can be accessed from the respective ground level. The idea of providing individual units to each household rather than an apartment building is to make them feel independent with a house on their own and for the ease of accessing the exterior environement in it’s immediate proximity. An apartment building limits the possiblity of elderly interacting with the nature because of their difficulty in walking a longer distance.

The site can be accessed through two roadways of which, one can be used as the main entry and the other can be used as a service entry.

The site terrain naturally provides a catchement area which is utilised as an artificial water body. The water body can thus be utilied as a catalyst for social interaction and as an aesthetic element.

Two high points of the site are marked here. These areas can be utilised for enjoying the whole site view and also shall be accessible for dependent elderly as well.

The demarcated areas are currently not ued for construction purposes ae the west side can be used as a backdrop for the water body and the east side can be considered for future expansion.

The marked space is not suitable for building due to the steep slope.

The space marked is used as the major stretch for bulidng considering both the advantages of site views and buildable terrain.

The retirement village is not a gated community and is exclusively open for the local people to come in and interact with the environment which in turn helps the elderly hrive in an atmosphere which they could experiance at thier hometown. The teashop circle tends to be a spcae where people come up and meet, a place where they colud share thier ideologies and experiances with each other. According to the site analysis, the major challenge and strength of the site is it’s terrain. The terrain is inward looking and provides the opportuunity of providing internal views. At the same time the terrain poses the difficulty for commuting for the elderly and as a result, it has to be made disabled friendly as well.


The opening in the sloping roof is provided at the pint whne the slopeing roof starts reducing the required headroom.

The teashop circle has a pavillion, a tea shop and spaces to practice performing arts if required.

SECTION B-B

A service unit is provided to house the equipements and services related to the cleaning and care of the artificial water body.

SECTION C-C

Each pair has a common entryway and one whole unit is capable of housing five families or individuals.

The ground floor of the office building houses service areas and gathering spaces while the first floor houses the hospice and receational facilities.

The ayurvedic spa is provided in terms of elderly’s c o n c e r n towards health and recreation.

The whole design is done in such a way that evrybulindg has its own unuqueview towards the water body.

Ther are spaces between units which act as gathering spaces that may get lively during evenings.

The spa is a facility with the traditional naalukettu concept which creates an abiance of the vernacular architecture.

The hospice and the office along with the indoor recreational spaces are provided at a moderate distance from each unit. The healthcare services are also provided along with the mentioned facilities. Here the advantage of golf cars are used for transportation within the site and this solves the problem of commuting patients who might require immediate care. The hospice accommodates 20 patients at a time and is for the residents who becomes bedridden with the passing of time.

POSSIBLE INTERVENTIONS There are about 500 gujarati families living in the gujarati street. The community consists of various social groups like the Marwadis, Jains and Kutch muslims. The gujarati street in kochi is a strong representation of gujarati culture.

03 GUJARATI STREET,FORT KOCHI UD PROJECT

Improving the imageability The electric lines tend to damage the imageability of the street. As part of the ornamentation process, laying the cable lines underground shall be given thought.

VISION To celebrate the Gujarati Street functionally as a Food Street & thereby enhance it as a tourist link between the Palace Rd. & Bazaar Rd. OBJECTIVES To enhance the Gujarati street as a link with provision of crosslinking the open spaces in the vicinity of Bazaar rd. with those near the institution (at the western side of Guj. st.) and with the canal. Thereby strengthening the pedestrian networks. To peand services. To create community experience & provide opportunities to exihibit Gujarati culture. Thereby, enriching people with actual knowledge about Guj. culture. To propose form-based guidelines to regulate the facade & built-heritage. To strengthen the street to be a socially symbiotic place that serves the local community & tourists. To strengthen the commerces. To reinforce the haveli typology & bring in cottage industries. Thereby, promote home-made products.

Evolving housing typologies Shared walls and a common courtyard since they give more importance for social gatherings.

The streets are alway busy with trade. The photograph shown above indicates the entry way to the gujarati street from the south. It is evidently a market place with shops on either side of the street.

People from the highlighted regions could use the entry points for joining in the activities conducted in the proposed site

URBAN VILLAGE, TVM HOUSING PROJECT Site zoning Recreational park The project was to design a campus consisting a film institute , music and dance academy and a fine arts institute along with housing facilities. The site is of approximately 75 acres and is located in Thiruvallom, Trivandrum. VISION The vison of the design was to create a self sustained campus which caters a self sustained campus which caters to the development of the adjacent localities. It shall encourage interaction between people and with the public ultimately leading to more creativity. Other than that, providing different farming activities encourages the campus to be self sustained and also shall promote employement opportunities for the local people. For this cultivation of certain crops and dairy farming is facilitated.

The area with lesser vegetation can be used for play ground, services etc.

The paved area can also be significantly reduced by relying upon a main axis for circulation.

DESIGN STRATEGIES

05 IT OFFICE BUILDING,QUILON MAJOR PROJECT The project was to design an IT Offce building which shall accommodate four start up companies and 5 main stream companies. The site proposed for this is in the new technopark campus located in Kundara, Kollam. The site is 2500 sqms in area and is a failry rectangular shaped site with a 20m wide road at it’s northwest. The IT building has a total of 18 floors and the service units are oriented towards it’s west side inorder to avoid the reduce the impact of harsh sunlight from the west.

The southwest and southeast side of the building will be exposed to harsh sunlight,hence the service core is provided along the southwest face.

However the western faces have access to views and the ashtamudi lake brings in cool breezes to this face as well.

It has been found by givoni that a wind incidence at 45* would increase the averagew air velocity and would provide a better distribution of indoor air movt.

Venturi effect: fluids flow at a higher velocity through smaller openings.

The mentioned principles were given thought in bringing up a tunnel kind of space within the building which allows the intake of air at a faster rate. The image here shows the view of the tunnel space provided in the building from the northwest side.
