Christopher Castle
Christopher Castle is a British-born visual artist. He exhibits widely in the U.S. and Europe. His work is represented in public collections such as the British Museum, Ashmolean Museum, Scottish and Welsh National Museums, and private collections worldwide. In Europe Castle explored landscape traditions, studying ancient sites, their forms and mythology, unearthing their meaning through his art. Moving to California in 1985, his painting and printmaking focused on human relationship to place and nature. He travels widely, most recently to an artist’s residency in Romania where he has been studying the prehistoric Cucuteni culture, Byzantine iconography, folk art, and rural land use. Current work includes painting several commissions, teaching printmaking in Berkeley schools for Kala Art Institute, and his public art project “Mapping the Soul of the Land,“ working with community groups and schools to create murals. His recent John Muir themed mural in Martinez is part of this series.
