As the finest superyacht marina in the Eastern Mediterranean, we’re internationally recognized for our excellence in concierge and yachting services, as well as property management. Our ground-breaking Castle Residences development, the crown jewel of the Marina, has proved to be an unparalleled success; sales have been exceptional, and the last few apartments are now on the market. Similarly, the completion and sale of our Island Villas, the final few of which are now ready for occupancy, have made this a truly exhilarating year all round.
Over the last twelve months, we’ve welcomed a number of prestigious tenants on board; companies and individuals who – like us – are guided by their love of the sea. And so this issue of ONBOARD sees us underlining those qualities which embody the true Spirit of the Sea: the events which make the Marina a home from home, the ancient mariners of old, and the modern-day thalassophiles who live for the briny blue. It’s an issue we’re very proud of. Join us on our journey...

TIME OUT EATING AWARDS Epsilon Resto Bar
DIESEL IT UP! Diesel is mixing things up this season! Artistic Director Nicola Formichetti says that this is the start of something new as they launch a collection that is designed for self-expression, in collaboration with Scottish artist, Portis Wasp.
Limassol Marina’s Epsilon Resto Bar picked up the award for “Best International Cuisine” at the Time Out Cyprus Eating Awards. Now celebrating the island’s finest cuisine for over 13 years, the awards are a testament to the popularity of local establishments, their quality, consistency and service. Member of PNS Restaurants Ltd, Epsilon is a multi-awarded restaurant, also Winner of the 1st Mediterranean Cocktail 2017, Winner of Elit Ultra Luxury Vodka 2017 and Best New Entry when it first opened in 2016. With a modern yet cozy indoor ambience and verandas with outstanding views, Epsilon is situated in a prime location at Limassol Marina with a more intimate balcony stretching over its waters. The tantalizing options on the menu bring a selection of authentic Mediterranean dishes with crafty hints of international fusion to its visitors, complemented with a bar for the perfect cocktail journey of discovery, a resident DJ and live music events for the full dining experience.
“What he does feels very contemporary, working with animation and a focus on Instagram. I’m a huge fan!” says Nicola. In this collection, you will find bright colours and playful designs inspired by Burning Man festival with a throwback to the 90’s. Diesel’s notable ‘Cookie’ logo, appears for the first time on clothes. Artist Ellen Green has created a tattoo-inspired print, which adds a chic contemporary touch to the collection. Aside from clothing, prepare yourselves for an array of hats, bags and a whole collection of sneakers too! Limassol Marina’s Diesel store continues to entice loyal followers of the brand, as well as newcomers to the shores of the vibrant city. Just like its latest campaign, entitled “Embrace Your Flaws,” Diesel invites you to view the latest collection in what has become a celebration of being beautifully flawed!

5 GOLD ANCHOR AWARD Second international accolade in a year In a strong third operational year, Cyprus’ first ‘Blue Flag Marina’ also received its ‘5 Gold Anchor’ award as part of The Yacht Harbour Association Scheme that has been auditing marinas throughout the world for over 25 years. Well known as a measure of quality assured berthing, the Gold Anchor assessment includes tests and audits to evaluate operational standards, customer service and berth facilities. In a period of international recognition, the 5 Gold Anchor and Blue Flag awards reflect Limassol Marina’s commitment to quality services and facilities, environmental protection and industry best practice. Coupled with the success of the marina development’s residential sales, these accolades continue to boost the island’s image on a global scale. An established destination for living, yachting, dining and shopping in the Eastern Mediterranean, Limassol Marina is the first superyacht marina in Cyprus able to accommodate 650 yachts up to 110m.
INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS Cyprus-Israel Regatta goes from strength to strength The 8th edition of the Cyprus-Israel Regatta will take place in the week following the ORC European Championship event (September 2018), concluding a very exciting period for yacht racing in Cyprus. Taking place at Limassol Marina, the event is co-organized by The Famagusta Nautical Club and the Israel Yacht Club, bringing together expertise from both countries to create what will be the best event yet. Limassol Marina has played host to sailing regattas co-hosted by the Israeli and Cypriot sailing communities for a number of years. Over 25 sailing yachts participated in the Herzliya Marina to Limassol Marina race in 2017, dealing with challenging conditions to take the honours across several vessel classes. The partnership between the Israeli and Cypriot sailing communities looks set for a bright future as bigger and more frequent events are added to the annual calendars, and the 2018 event is certainly one not to be missed for any budding yachtsmen.

THE FINAL HOMES ON THE SEA
Last opportunity villas and apartments
In a success story that now spans over eight years, Limassol Marina has signed contracts in excess of €380 million for its luxury residential properties. The final Island Villas have been completed and apartments at Castle Residences are only two years away from delivery. This will mark the end of all construction at the award-winning marina. With only a few units now remaining, buyers have one last opportunity to own a home on the sea in the region’s unique waterfront development. These last villas and apartments illustrate the appeal of this rare offering, benefiting from both a city and seafront lifestyle with 360-degree sea, marina and city views. Each Island Villa includes either its own exclusive water-space or designated private berth(s) attached to the individual property, offering stunning views and mooring for yachts of up to 60m. These homes have been carefully designed to offer the pinnacle of waterside living and are now ready for residents to move in. This concept has enticed buyers, as 80% of the villas have been sold and only 15 are still available. Moments away, the spacious apartments at Castle Residences, the only residential units in the Mediterranean to be completely surrounded by water, are accessed by a private bridge and still manage to emulate an urban feel. Unique uninterrupted views of the superyacht marina, the sea and the coastal city of Limassol set these exclusive homes apart from all other properties in Cyprus. With Limassol Marina’s sandy beach just steps away from each apartment, and 40% already sold or reserved, a final cluster is now available for sale.
All properties at Limassol Marina include round-the-clock concierge services, security, property and rental management. For more information on the Island Villas or to book a private tour of the luxury properties, contact +357 25 020 020 or visit www.limassolmarina.com
EXPANDING HORIZONS C
yprus is fast becoming a highly sought after superyacht destination, and this activity is focused on the rapidly expanding Limassol Marina. With a new office for Hill Robinson at the heart of the project amongst the smart restaurants and quality boutiques, Stelios Kazamia, Director of Hill Robinson Cyprus, is upbeat about the growing attraction of the Marina, the island, and the opportunities being created by the UK’s impending withdrawal from the EU and the uncertainty this is producing. Hill Robinson has had a presence in Cyprus since 2012, when the then Nicosia-based office was able to offer its services alongside a regulatory regime in full compliance with the requirements of the EU and OECD, Cyprus having been a member of the European Union since 2004. This offered many economic and political possibilities. The law on the island is based on English common law, which is understandably of great benefit in making the island attractive for incorporation and business investment when coupled with one of the lowest EU corporate tax rates.
A world-leader in yacht management, Hill Robinson’s new Limassol Marina offices afford unparalleled expertise to the mariners of the Eastern Mediterranean
The uncertainty behind Brexit is still a talking point, with as yet unanswered questions surrounding the UK leaving the EU. Will a UK-flagged boat still be entitled to operate commercially in the EU, or will a yacht with VAT paid in the UK prior to Brexit be considered EU VAT paid, and so forth? The opportunities from the Cyprus point of view is the ability to offer a restructuring of existing ownership, with new ownership to be placed in the EU rather than the UK, while an added bonus is that Cyprus has a very attractive yacht leasing scheme with an effective tax rate as low as 3.05% for boats over 65 metres.
Unparalleled Service
Hill Robinson Yacht Management itself has a wellestablished grounding and offers unparalleled services to its international clientele worldwide to assist in running yachts safely and efficiently for private use or for charter. The Limassol office is just part of a recent expansion programme which includes a notable new set of offices overlooking the port in Monaco to house the business development team. From Antibes, a highly
qualified and versatile multi-lingual team provides all the essential support that ensures the entire yachting experience is a success. At the other end of the Mediterranean, a new team in Palma de Mallorca is now on hand to look after yachts in the area, and also adding to the crew agency, HRcrew. Crew recruitment and development, so important a factor in the lifeblood of any yacht, whether chartering or not, is now being hosted here as well as in Antibes and in the US in the Ft Lauderdale and Palm Beach offices. As one of the industry’s first ever dedicated yacht management companies, the passing years have seen a constant growth in the expertise and range of services. In Douglas, on the Isle of Man, the Hill Robinson office service started with the ability to set up an ownership structure for new yachts, complete with the creation of crew employment and payroll from our Guernsey Employment Company. In addition to a yacht’s day-to-day management, this division – which handles a number of well-known yachts – can

now oversee the project management for a new build or complex refit and, backed by a specialist procurement division, is able to research, source and supply every crucial component needed for vessels up to and including luxury tenders, floatplanes and even submarines. Meanwhile, the creation of a specialized Hill Robinson Aviation division, able not just to charter private planes for transport, but to purchase and manage fixed wing amphibious aircraft and helicopters, has both added to the inventory and catered to the needs of yachts that ‘go further’.
A World of Difference
Working closely with these international offices to provide the highest levels of service to its clients, Hill Robinson Cyprus is poised to significantly contribute to the Group’s growing presence and capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Limassol office now has several vessels under management, delivering services which include technical, operational, crew and commercial management, as well as project
management, and are primarily responsible for the payment administration on behalf of fleet vessels. This ensures precise review and approval and subsequent remittance of supplier invoices, credit cards and ship’s cash utilising our HRipay secure online approval system. The team also provide a stakeholder function to owners and charterers, ensuring that charter fees, and the APA and VAT where applicable, are paid in accordance with the MYBA Charter Agreement. The Cyprus office has also been able to add to the Hill Robinson project management experience with an in-house technical manager, able to take full advantage of the nearby Limassol shipyard. Recognized as one of the most comprehensive commercial facilities, Hill Robinson have utilized this doorstep facility to negate the need for travel as regards the maintenance and refit of the fleet yachts in the Eastern Mediterranean. Both Hill Robinson Cyprus and its global teams are looking forward to providing their expertise to visitors and captains, private or commercial,
not just into the Eastern Mediterranean, but all around the world in all of their offices, intent on making yachting an enjoyable experience. THIS IS YOUR VIEW
As the final stage of Limassol Marina nears completion, buyers have one last opportunity to acquire an exclusive villa or apartment which proudly exemplifies ‘living on the sea’.
Living
“No other properties in Limassol offer you the privilege of living literally on the water, in a home with a 360-degree view.”
S
ince its succesful launch in 2010, the image of Limassol Marina has evolved. What was once viewed as a bold and almost toogood-to-be-true development taking shape in a climate of global economic instability is today an established, fully-fledged superyacht marina. Indeed, it is the showpiece of the Cyprus coastline; a destination that lures the seafaring beau monde and their admirers with a combination of top quality marina facilities, exclusive residences, and sophisticated shopping and dining opportunities.
it with an uninterrupted sea view, and you have the foundations of the city’s high-end residences overlooking the town’s seafront.
In terms of residential property, sales to date have exceeded €380 million. In fact, many transactions were concluded during the years when the economy in Cyprus and around the world was in crisis. Now that the economy in most parts of the world is at different stages of recovery, the few remaining homes that constitute the final stage of the development are expected to have a shortlived presence on the pages of any ‘Properties for Sale’ list. Why?
Island Villa or Castle Apartment?
It’s All About the View
If you have set your heart on a villa in the sun and by the sea, the few remaining Island Villas are ready to welcome their new owners. As the name implies, these villas occupy a man-made island with a bridge connecting it to the coast. Property sizes range from 2 to 4-bedroom residences, all
Coastal properties were, are, and will always be among the most desirable homes, especially in regions where the weather is mild and the sea is hospitable. Add the commercial buzz and cosmopolitan sophistication of Limassol, blend
A property at Limassol Marina offers all that – and more. Not only do you have a view towards the sea, but you can actually alternate between panoramas. Gaze at the Mediterranean and the marina on the one hand, then scan the Limassol skyline on the other hand. And in case you’re wondering, prices are competitive. One of the main features of Limassol Marina is the colourful diversity of its residential clusters. You could say it’s the architectural equivalent of an accomplished symphony orchestra, where different types of instruments play in perfect harmony. As a resident, you can enjoy the ‘music’, the unique features of Limassol Marina, regardless of whether you own a 1-bedroom apartment or a 4-bedroom villa with private berth at your doorstep.

with private garden and pool, and with a private berth attached to the garden, where you can moor a yacht of up to 60m. Prices start from €3.2 million. You can also enjoy the concept of ‘living on the sea’ in an apartment at Castle Residences. This cluster of five buildings is surrounded by the sea, with amazing views of the marina and the city, and a sandy beach only a few steps away from each home. The buildings are similar yet not identical, rising up to eight storeys high, housing 1 to 3-bedroom apartments including duplexes and penthouses. Although Castle Residences are still under construction and expected to be completed in 2020, almost half have already been sold or reserved. Off-plan prices start from €1.7 million, and naturally, the higher the apartment, the more stunning the view.
A Whole Lifestyle
As Limassol Marina’s Commercial and Marketing Manager, Nikiforos Pampakas, put it: “No other properties in Limassol offer you the privilege of living literally on the water, at the island’s first superyacht marina, in a home with a 360-degree view, only a few minutes away from the heart of Limassol.” That is what makes a property at Limassol Marina not just a home, but a whole
Living
lifestyle; and it’s a lifestyle that is enjoyed and appreciated by homeowners from around the world, literally. Nikiforos says: “This single project has brought together homeowners from 30 different countries. It’s quite inspiring to see people from very different backgrounds and cultures find common ground and share the same interests. It’s all part of the ‘living on the sea’ lifestyle.” This diversity is supported by a number of practical factors that contribute to Limassol Marina’s popularity. Apart from the mild winter conditions that are ideal for winterization of yachts in a protected area, Limassol Marina’s location allows owners and their crew to benefit from the city’s vibrant activity. The development itself has plenty to offer: a sandy beach near the residences, and a commercial area known for its fine dining venues, cigar lounge, luxury spa and fitness club, and exclusive outlets from Graff to Zilli. Families in particular appreciate the safe environment, not just within the secure and gated development, but in Cyprus in general. Proximity to two international airports makes it easy for expatriates to travel to and from their home countries.
Investors’ Choice
Given the many advantages of the residential properties at Limassol Marina, investors were quick to assess the potential of buying a home in this exceptional development. Nikiforos says: “Investors don’t waste time. When they see an opportunity, they grasp it. We make that opportunity even more attractive by offering full property management services, as well as the services of a dedicated rentals department.”

erty, negotiating with the tenants, collecting rent and transferring it to your account, and settling utility bills. From a holidaymaker’s perspective, luxury holiday accommodation in such a prestigious setting can rival the best resort hotels in terms of facilities, views, and destination experiences. Like any other permanent residents who own their property at Limassol Marina, tenants can take advantage of all available concierge services during their stay. These include all kinds of housekeeping tasks such as cleaning, laundry and grocery shopping, as well as transportation, yacht chartering and private, tailor-made entertainment. (see Concierge Services on page 31).
Seeing Is Believing
An attempt to compare Limassol Marina with others in its class could be challenging. You’ll find elements of southern France – but with a milder climate and an English-speaking population, or it might strike you as a safer and warmer alternative to the Spanish Riviera. The truth is, no description of Limassol Marina is as convincing as a personal and private viewing that will take you by buggy around the residences, the actual marina and its facilities, as well as the commercial area. Nikiforos says: “First-time visitors are always amazed by these homes that are so close to the water; when we say you’ll be ‘living on the sea’, we really mean it!” Also pleasantly surprising is the sense of privacy that surrounds the properties and the open spaces that never feel crowded, although the area attracts thousands of visitors, some of whom will be the last to claim their share in this superyacht marina that has changed the coast of Limassol and the face of Cyprus. BUOYED BY SUCCESS Assistant Marina Manager Tom Lord takes the responsibility for running the operations of a highly successful Five Gold Anchor marina in his stride
T
om Lord’s soft-spoken demeanour disguises a man who is fiercely proud of and vehemently passionate about the Marina he operates. Not surprising then, that this confident and personable young Brit has been on board since the early stages of construction, playing a key role in ensuring Limassol Marina provides the best full-spectrum services and facilities around. Growing up in the sailing city of Chichester on the south coast of England, our budding young seafarer was often to be found out on the water or at the sailing club. This lust for the nautical life charted a course which eventually led Tom to Cyprus when he heard about a fully integrated waterfront development project on the horizon in Limassol. He jumped at the opportunity to get involved, transferring his facility management and customer service experience to contribute to the successful design and setup of operations, welcome the first customers and establish a solid team. Today, Tom is very much settled in Cyprus – a smile lights his face whenever he mentions the island which has become his home – and it is clear that he relishes the diversity of this fastpaced environment.
The Power of the Team
Responsible for everything that happens on the water, Tom and his international team of 18 operations professionals play a key role in maintaining the Marina’s stellar performance. His ‘cool as a cucumber’ demeanour shows clear confidence in the team he works tirelessly to keep motivated and enthusiastic. For Tom, it’s ultimately
the people who make the Marina: not just the boat owners and customers, with their exciting tales of travelling the world’s seas and oceans, but also the hard-working employees. Likening the Limassol Marina team to a well-oiled machine, Tom explains: “On a site as big as this, the only way to achieve high standards of customer service is through all teams across all departments working very well together. We want our customers in every corner of the marina to have a positive experience and receive the service they need, having discovered something special is happening at Limassol Marina!” And something special is happening. In 2017, the local Cypriot environmental agency, CYMEPA, awarded the project the island’s very first Blue Flag Marina status for its commitment to environmental best practices and the protection of this active, yet delicate ecosystem. Clearly proud of this commitment, Tom hopes the honour will set an example both locally and internationally, showing other marinas how to approach environmental issues. “Marinas are usually at the forefront of helping the industry to innovate, so we really need to be showing and educating the industry about the way forward and what’s best practice, making sure others are following, doing the right things and innovating as well,” he explains. According to Tom, next on the environmental agenda is promoting the recently launched Blue Flag for Boat Owners scheme, which sees owners commit to protecting the environment. Positive about the future success of the initiative, Tom is already expecting a significant pickup over the course of the year.
Profile
Tom and his international team of 18 operations professionals play a key role in maintaining Limassol Marina’s stellar performance.
Limassol Marina has also been awarded Five Gold Anchors under the international industryhonoured Gold Anchor scheme, a quality assurance system not unlike star ratings for hotels, which acts as a form of proof that a marina operates at the very top level and employs best practices according to industry standards. Tom lets slip that Limassol Marina – already working at the scheme’s highest level at the time of rating – is currently in the process of becoming the third facility in the world to be upgraded to the newly introduced Platinum standard, “which essentially says that in terms of facility and service we are one of the top projects on the planet. And that is what we are striving for.”
A Trailblazing Formula
The growing international reputation of the Marina, and the fact that the facility now hosts some of the biggest events on the annual calendar, including the renowned Limassol Boat Show, is proof of its instrumental role in growing, improving and driving the industry forward, both island-wide and on a global scale. According to Tom, the growth of the Limassol Boat Show demonstrates the importance of both Limassol and the Marina in the yachting scene of the Eastern Med. “As a bridge between Europe and the Middle East, the Boat Show (and therefore the project) serves as an attractive opportunity for clients and companies to ‘meet in the middle’, in a purpose-built facility that shows the expanding Cyprus yachting industry at its very best,” he explains. “Each year we welcome more visitors, exhibitors and boats, and the Show’s future looks very bright!”
Tom also travels the world representing Limassol Marina at leading international superyacht boat shows, such as Monaco and the MYBA Charter Yacht Show in Barcelona, in order to communicate the project’s messages to the industry and maintain relationships with key players. “Cyprus is a new destination on the Mediterranean superyacht map, and one of our main objectives is to highlight the fantastic advantages that the island – and Limassol – offers, in order to drive further traffic,” he says. In Tom’s opinion, this global recognition is partly down to Limassol Marina’s internationally trailblazing ‘mixed-development’ formula. Working as a full-service berthing, residential, and leisure destination, with a plethora of retail outlets, F&B options and leisure facilities all in the very heart of Limassol, the project successfully combines commercial and residential elements with full spectrum marina services, an excellent example of what the industry has dubbed the ‘Destination Marina’ trend. This full-service combined offering means that each element of the project has a direct influence on the others. Tom reveals that customer service delivery is also very much designed around this integrated approach: both operations and teams across all departments serving each element with equal attention to detail and delivery of the highest standards. Although the Marina has not yet reached maturity in industry terms, Tom and his team are, even now, planning for the future of the project. Achieving targets in terms of boat numbers, and with superyacht traffic at the Marina increasing year-on-year, the immediate five-year vision is to continue improving statistics, serving the captains, crews, boat owners, residents, visitors and leisure seekers of both local and international markets. “Over 200 superyachts have passed through our waters since we began operation in 2013/14. We are proud to have welcomed some of the largest, most iconic superyachts in the world to Limassol Marina, and even prouder to serve our annual and winter berth-holders as their home port each year,” says Tom. Now, with the project on the cusp of global stardom, this dedicated young man is on a mission: to ensure Cyprus’ pioneering multi-functional destination marina maintains its position at the helm of the industry, with its place on the international superyacht map firmly secured.

CALL OF THE SEA They have turned their hobby into a business. They speak a language that transcends borders. They have their feet on the ground and their heart at sea. Meet the yacht dealers and brokers at Limassol Marina.
Profile
“Blue Point is not just me. It’s a team ‘sport’, where everyone – from the receptionist to the sales & marketing and service division – is valuable.”
M
arios Iordanou did not waste time. Right from the start he knew that his life, in terms of both work and recreation, revolved around boats and the sea. Like many residents of the inland capital, Nicosia, he made the beaches of Protaras his playground, where he enjoyed swimming, water-skiing and commanding his own speedboat. So, as soon as he was ready to enter the workforce, he approached a small boat building company where he polished his skills at every level, from servicing the boats to sales and marketing. One step led to another, until he eventually established Blue Point with his two business partners and earned the trust of two leading names in the industry: the Azimut-Benetti group and SeaRay. In 2010, Blue Point added Elan sailing boats to their portfolio.
Cross-Border Excellence
The company maintains offices in both Cyprus and Lebanon, and is proud of a broad-based clientele with customers from these two countries as well as from Qatar, Russia, Germany and
the UK, most of whom have become friends. Marios says: “Even when I am out on my boat on weekends, I often meet my clients in our favourite locations, so I hardly differentiate between work and recreation. Although sailing is no longer merely a hobby, my connection with boats and the satisfaction I get from them is even greater. Now I get pleasure from sharing my knowledge and helping others enjoy their boat and the lifestyle that goes with it.” Marios is clearly doing something right, as the ‘Best Service Worldwide’ award 2011/2012 from the Azimut-Benetti Group proves. The award is based on the results of the Group’s ongoing survey to assess every Azimut boat owner’s satisfaction with their chosen dealer. Blue Point’s close rapport with customers was also acknowledged by SeaRay, who gave Blue Point the rare title of ‘Five-Star Dealer’ after two years of continuous inspection.
Big Team, Small Island

company’s success: “Blue Point is not just me. It’s a team ‘sport’, where everyone – from the receptionist to the sales & marketing and service division – is valuable.” Although the first and main offices are in Aradippou, having a second service point at Limassol Marina made sense and there are more offices to come. “We’re looking forward to the Ayia Napa Marina which will be ready to start operating in 2019, and we will be opening an office there too,” he says. “The new marina in Ayia Napa and the upgraded small harbour at the Golden Coast will give the industry another welcome boost. Our industry still has great potential in Cyprus, not to mention the serious benefits that would accompany a final reunification of the island.” Marios makes another noteworthy point: Cyprus is a small island, so the coastline is limited. But, on the other hand, this means that you don’t need more than a medium-sized or even small boat to enjoy the clear waters and explore all the beautiful locations which are close to each other.
Work-Life Balance
Does his commitment to his business, combined with his passion for boats, take its toll on family life? Marios does not sugarcoat his words: “Especially in summer, it’s a 24/7 job; that goes with the territory. But the family is not sidelined. From a very young age, my son regularly accompanied me on the boat, and has inherited my bond with

the sea; after completing his studies in Marine Business in the UK, he joined the business.” What many people who have never sailed before don’t realize is that sailing is a great family activity that offers something for everyone: sunbathing and swimming, as well as snorkelling, fishing or water-skiing. As Marios puts it: “You can think of it as a family picnic... at sea!” With a series of dealers almost side by side at Limassol Marina, does competition cause any tension? “Quite the contrary,” says Marios. “We all share the same passion, but each has his own clientele, brands or specialized field. Naturally, there is healthy competition, but that is a posi-
tive thing. It motivates us to perform better and of course, the client always wins,” he says with a smile, “and that’s exactly what we want.”

Yiannos Nicolaides of Nautimar Marine thrives on the challenges and satisfaction that only custom-built yachts can offer.
B
ig or small, sailboat or motor yacht, whatever you fancy, Yiannos Nicolaides can guide you to the boat of your dreams, even if that means a custom-build or refit in a reputable shipyard worldwide. While many agree that a yachtsman’s expertise is proportional to the twinkle in his eye at the mention of a custom newbuild or refit project, Yiannos would be the first to jump at the opportunity. Born and raised in Nicosia, Yiannos was always most at home on his father’s boat in Kyrenia. From a very young age his technical aptitude was evident: while other boys played football, he preferred to dismantle and reassemble anything he could find. Such was his passion, that his father bought him his first speedboat at the age of 14. Yiannos says: “My father realized my interest would not fade, as long as I was challenged.”
Birth of a Business
After obtaining a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Ohio University, Yiannos returned to the family business of cabinet manufacturing
and exports, soon replacing his speedboat with a bigger one. But much as he loved sailing, he didn’t set out to be a marine professional. Then, in 1995, “over a beer with a friend, I decided to invest in a small part-time partnership, buying and selling small boats. We established Nautimar Marine in Nicosia in anticipation of various upcoming marina projects.” Boats have a way of morphing from hobby to passion to full-time occupation, and Yiannos soon left the family business to dedicate himself to Nautimar Marine. By 2003 he had bought out his partner, and in 2014 Nautimar became one of the first commercial tenants at Limassol Marina.
Specialist vs Salesman
“I’m a terrible salesman,” says Yiannos, who’s more interested in sharing his knowledge and solving problems than striking deals. His capacity to analyse, compare, assess and explain technical specifications has defined his 23 years in the business and his rapport with his clients. He may be a one-man-show, but he knows the ropes – and his clients know it.
OnBoard | 47
He’ll also do whatever it takes, even travel to Thailand to supervise the refitting of a 30-metre luxury sailing yacht. “She was a 23-year-old beauty with excellent structural integrity but in dire need of an extensive overhaul before her sale,” he says of the De Vries Lentsch custom-built high-spec bluewater all-aluminium sailing yacht. All scenarios were examined, from a local refit to a shipyard in New Zealand or Holland. As a result, this interesting multimillion-dollar project kept Yiannos busy travelling to Phuket for almost 3 years, liaising weekly with the onsite captain/engineer, reporting to the client, and assessing solutions. Nearly all systems were either upgraded or completely replaced, the interiors extensively modified and upgraded, and the yacht sold immediately on completion.
The Case for Custom-Built Yachts
“Custom-built yachts are my thing,” says Yiannos. But given the fact that custom-builds can be competitively priced when compared to production yachts, and that production yachts can often be delivered much faster than custom-builds, is it worth the wait? The answer is convincing: “Custom yachts are primarily for seasoned yachtsmen who already boast personal experience with several boats and yachts and have a very clear picture of what they want. If you’re making a seven or eight-figure investment, don’t you want your yacht to be different?” We feel this way about our homes, and the same applies here: essentially, yachts are floating homes. In fact, the many

parallels between the two are surprising. Clients love exclusivity and Yiannos offers this in yachts starting from 15 metres to well over 40 metres. One such case was Yiannos’ last project. It began in 2015 with a client looking into a semi-custom design from his associated shipyard in Holland. This experienced owner had a clear vision of his requirements, and a semi-custom envelope needed more than a handful of modifications. Utilising the skills of renowned superyacht designer Guido de Groot, they created a oneoff, all-aluminum pocket-superyacht of almost 28 metres with amazing technical and aesthetic innovations and boundary-pushing naval architecture. In fact, yacht Anemeli became a unique
Fast Displacement Hull Design (FDHD) yacht that broke records and introduced many world firsts. It’s an exciting journey that will take you to the heart of the yacht ownership experience; but you’ll need a skilled captain, like Yiannos, to steer you in the right direction. “I can confidently say that the smooth cruising experience, which is the result of the design of the hull, is the Sunseeker signature”.
R
aised in Nicosia, Evros Symeonides was always drawn to the sea and the sailing experience, and dreamt of one day buying his own boat. In real life he followed a classic path: he finished school, he completed his military service and studied Business Administration, specializing in marketing. This versatile background led him to different positions in a variety of business enterprises. Whether he was working as a stockbroker or marketing the products of a trading company, the vision of having a boat never faded. In 1999, almost 20 years ago, the dream finally became a reality: Evros bought his first boat.
From Hobby to Business
After a few years of sailing for recreation, Evros felt the urge to get serious about sailing. “I decided, in 2004, to formally enrich my knowledge, so I attended RYA training courses up to yacht master and I can now call myself a skipper,” he says. “But with that, the urge to get more involved in boats grew stronger. By 2009, I got to where I
wanted to be – close to Sunseeker, working with the company’s local representative,” and he hasn’t looked back since. In 2015, changes in Sunseeker’s organizational structure eventually led to the establishment of Sunseeker Cyprus at Limassol Marina, as a member of the Sunseeker London Group, the largest distributor network of Sunseeker yachts around the world. “After working with the Sunseeker brand for nine years in total I can confidently say – both as the General Manager of Sunseeker Cyprus and above all as a skipper – that Sunseeker’s heritage is true to its name,” Evros reveals. He is rightly proud of his diverse clientele, a community of Cypriots and expatriates of different nationalities who derive great pride from owning a boat built by one of the most famous luxury motor yacht manufacturers. “It’s not just the quality of the material and construction of this prestigious brand,” he continues, “it’s the smooth cruising experience which is a result of the design of the hull: that’s the Sunseeker signature.”

A Worldwide Network
Also notable is the fact that Sunseeker Brokerage has established itself as the global market leader in the sale of new and preowned yachts from 40 feet upwards. That significantly increases the likelihood of an impatient buyer finding his preferred yacht, even a new one, with minimum waiting time, if not immediately. Evros says: “At any given moment, Sunseeker Brokerage has about 250 pre-owned boats and yachts for sale all over Europe. This is where having the backing of a large group makes a difference.” As a member of the Sunseeker London Group, Sunseeker Cyprus can also assure clients of standardized and professional client service in 20 countries including Monaco, Italy, Greece, South of France, Spain, Egypt. “All the members of the Group have access to the same client database, so a Sunseeker owner is automatically a member of this international community,” Evros says.
Awarded as the Sunseeker London Group’ Best Broker in December 2016, Evros is flanked by Mr Richard Tiley (left) and Mr Chris Head, Sales Director (right).

my boat. Anytime a client called, I was here.” Now that he has erased the line between hobby and work, the inevitable question is: Does Evros have time to actually enjoy the sea and his own boat? “Actually, our boat keeps the family together. My two daughters were comfortable on board from a very young age. This is where we spend quality time together. GIFT OF THE SEA
Of all the sea’s treasures, the tiny salt crystals are the most versatile, with the power to balance distinctive flavours and add briny notes to the signature dishes that define the restaurant scene at Limassol Marina.

YACHT Resto Bar
Restaurant and Lounge Bar
Salt-crusted baking is arguably the best cooking method for fish, as it allows a fusion of flavours at a greater intensity than others. True to Mediterranean tradition, the oven-roasted sea bass at the YACHT Resto Bar is dressed in a coating of coarse sea salt. Executive Chef Vaggelis Nakopoulos is a master of the recipe native to Sicily, where seaside living goes hand in hand with salt harvesting. Aromatic thyme and rosemary together with slices of lemon form the bouquet of flavours within the sea bass. One might assume that the recipe would make the fish overwhelmingly salt. However, the skin is left intact so that the salty exterior does not overwhelm the flesh. Coarse-grain sea salt is then blended with water to form a thick batter that is wrapped around the fish. This protective shell retains the moisture of the sea bass whilst also enhancing the aromas of the stuffing. The natural flavours of the fish, herbs and salt are wonderfully fused together. The result is a delicate and juicy fillet with an unvarying briny flavour. It is also a show-stopping centrepiece at the table. Part of the presentation includes prying the salty tier open to release succulent fish segments. Simple to prepare and impressive to the eye, it’s a salt-inspired dish well worth exploring.
Dining
Pyxida
Fish and Seafood Restaurant
Among its collection of seafood indulgences, salmon gravlax is the ultimate palatable luxury at Pyxida. This traditional Nordic dish demonstrates the Midas touch of salt as it magically cold-cures the fish with its unique properties. Its meticulous preparation demands the finest ingredients and experienced hands. Petros Georgiou is the visionary at the heart of Pyxida’s success and has mastered the restaurant’s gravlax recipe. His approach is simple: he uses ingredients that add subtle touches of flavour to all fish and seafood. A whole fillet of Norwegian salmon is decorated with a layer of medium-refined salt. The mineral beautifully marries the additions of crushed black pepper, freshly chopped dill and a dash of sugar. Unlike smoked salmon that carries a simple salty brine, here the salt absorbs the accompanying ingredients to create superb flavour. Over the course of six hours, this blend then preserves the fish and the tenderising element of the salt creates the silky texture. In line with its beautiful simplicity, slices of fresh onion and pickled cucumber that decorate the plate complement the salmon harmoniously. Served in wafer-thin slices, these melt-in-themouth ribbons may look delicate but are bursting with taste.
Marina Beach Bar
Restaurant and Lounge Bar
Given that this establishment is exclusive to the marina’s Peninsula Beach, it fittingly boasts rather unique dishes in tow. In particular, the menu at this seaside oasis serves oysters with a distinctly salty twist. It is standard practice to present oysters with flakes of salt among the many condiments, yet Marina Beach Bar goes one step further. Executive Chef Diomedes Varnava came up with the novel concept of converting the oyster into a refreshing granita! Rock oysters are shucked before your eyes and then doused in a classic margarita concoction. A mix of triple sec, lime, lemon juice and tequila is whipped into shaved ice, and to balance the sweetness, black salt is added. This is a locally-sourced sea salt smoked over a bed of coals at low temperatures to give it a smoky flavour and darker tint. The curiosity for eclectic salt is even more evident at Epsilon, the sister restaurant of Marina Beach Bar. It has a collection of salt-inspired creations, each with a unique aroma. Many of its grilled meats have a dash of smoked salt, mushroom-infused flecks are scattered on their risotto and black salt gives a kick to grilled calamari.

Marina Breeze Lounge Bar Restaurant and Lounge Bar
A circle of salt on a serving glass is the quintessential feature of a well-rounded cocktail. It is more than just a stylish means of livening up the presentation; it adds another dimension of flavour to the palate. Marina Breeze’s signature Salted Breeze is a tribute to its surrounding waters with colours and ingredients inspired by the sea. This new feature on the menu is a libation to satisfy every corner of your taste buds as the decoration of salt grains completes the mixology composition. Premium tequila is shaken together with fresh lemon juice and sugar syrup. To balance the salt crown adorning the cocktail, a foam of lemon juice, sugar syrup and egg white is whipped up and gently rests on the surface. Altogether, it’s both potent and yet remarkably smooth when savoured. With every sip, each salt crystal along the glass contrasts with the sweetness of the liquor and the tartness of its citrus elements. It is a treat that is best enjoyed slowly; the floating ice ball maintains the refreshing temperature whilst maintaining the concentration of flavour for longer. With this waterfront venue situated literally on the Mediterranean, this signature drink is almost an artistic interpretation of the surrounding sea spray and salty air.
Café Calma
Café, Bar and Restaurant
At first it was perceived as a mere fad. However, salted caramel is now regarded as a firm favourite in the domain of desserts. It’s a velvety sauce of heated sugar, butter, heavy cream and an all-important addition of salt. The antithesis of sweet and salty is certainly an unusual and yet addictive one, and it has sparked inspiration for countless pairing suggestions. It began as a rarity of select Parisian patisseries in the 1990s’ and within a decade, it had taken the USA by storm. It only recently emerged on the Cyprus food scene, and Café Calma is one of the few venues that responded to its popularity. Some of their signature sweets include a salted caramel sauce among their range of optional toppings. When drizzled over lava cake, it highlights the intensity and richness of the dark chocolate sponge and molten core. Calma’s waffles are carved into squares, allowing each piece to be enveloped with the right amount of saltiness. Crepes are freshly prepared, and the salted caramel embellishes every layer. Regardless of your dessert choice, the addition of salt cuts through the sweetness to harmonize the flavours at play. The emergence of savoury undertones is certainly a revolution that has elevated customary sweets to the highest order.

SEA LIFE
Most of us love the sea, but for a select few, the thalassophiles, this marine passion is more complex. From the thrill atop the waves to the hidden treasures of the deep, these are the men and women who have built their careers on and in the Mediterranean.
Andreas Cariolou
“The sea is in my DNA,” reveals Olympic RS:X windsurfer Andreas Cariolou, who comes from a long line of distinguished seamen. “Even as a child, it drew me; I couldn’t wait to get to my grandmother’s house on the coast, and then to the beach!” The 35-year-old prodigy is the island’s highest ranked windsurfer, the 14-time winner of the Cyprus National Championships and, as the first Cypriot windsurfer to attain an Olympic qualification, he has attended four separate Olympiads – in Athens, Beijing, London, and Rio – and is currently on track for Tokyo 2020. He’s competed internationally and is placed first in the Greek National Championships in 2014. He once took part in a World Championship on a lake in Austria, and is currently preparing for the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. But it’s his home town of Limassol that holds a special place in his heart, a city which, he suggests, is “the most athletic of the towns in Cyprus. The conditions are excellent: other European athletes don’t get to train at home during the winter, but here it’s windsurfing weather all year round.” Windsurfing out of the National Sailing Centre on the Amathunta Beach, Andreas welcomes the “freedom of the sea; there are no constricting roads, there’s no need for fuel. And out there, you’re connected in every way with the elements of nature.” “Sometimes, I consider the illogicality and impracticality of following this path,” he muses. “If you don’t love this sport, there’s no way you can succeed.” The monetary reward is negligible, he suggests, and there’s a staggering amount of risk involved in competing at such a level: “If you break your arm, you’re going to slide down those world rankings. And that means you’ll lose your sponsors. But,” he adds, “I’m a romantic, an idealist. Even when the future hasn’t looked bright, I’ve kept going. I am driven by the sea. The summer I turned 15, I first tried to windsurf. But the sails back then were made from cloth – they were very different from the high-tech equipment we have now – and they were so heavy,” he laughs. “So I went away and spent all winter building my strength. Because I knew, long before I’d ever managed to lift that sail, that this would be my path in life.”

MARELab brings together a team of archaeological specialists who capture the island’s maritime heritage. Dr. Stella Demesticha and Anna Demetriou
From riding high to beneath the waves, maritime archaeologists Dr Stella Demesticha (left) and Anna Demetriou (right) are deep-diving archaeologists with a love of everything related to the island’s nautical past. Both are members of Cyprus’ Maritime Archaeological Research Laboratory (MARELab), and both are truly passionate about the sea. Part of the University of Cyprus, and under the auspices of the Department of History and Archaeology, MARELab brings together a team of archaeological specialists who capture the island’s maritime heritage. Stella is the organisation’s director, a key player in the island’s recent submarine discoveries, and Anna an accomplished PhD candidate in the process of completing her thesis on the ancient shipwreck sites in Cyprus. Enthralled by the waters of the Mediterranean her whole life long, Stella was given her first mask at the age of six: “I saw what was under the water and I loved it,” she enthuses. “Perhaps that’s why
I became an archaeologist. I feel at home in the sea, whichever sea I might be in. All Greeks love the sea,” continues this Athenian-born thalassophile. She sees working on one boat while excavating another, all in an environment not made for humans, as a very satisfying challenge. Meanwhile, Anna enjoys maritime archaeology for the understanding of the past. “My parents loved the sea, but they had a healthy fear of it as well; I was never encouraged to go into the waves as a small child,” Anna reveals. These days, however, the PhD candidate loves to challenge her own abilities through marine archaeology. “I love the slow unearthing of knowledge, and the whole process of becoming a tight-knit team. “I think we both feel closer to ourselves when we’re near or in the water,” she adds. “It’s the sea which has defined our history; it has defined the character of the people of Cyprus: who they were and who they are. From the trade of antiquity to the tourism of the modern world, it’s the Mediterranean which is almost entirely responsible for our island culture.”

His love for the sea is based on the very real need to restore, to clean, to protect and maintain.
Stavros Paraskevopoulos
For thalassophiles, the sea is a true passion; whether as a place of work or a place of pleasure. Without those who strive to preserve and protect our marine environment, its breathtaking beauty would soon disappear. Stavros Paraskevopoulos is one such nautical guardian, a renowned marine biologist who cares very deeply for the waters of this world. Born in Limassol, Stavros lived his life by the coast, before his studies took him to Hawaii in 1997. Stints in Crete, Holland, Malta and Jeddah all followed, however, always working in a marine environment. Then, three years ago, he returned to Cyprus to put his wealth of knowledge to work in the seas of his home. “It was time to put my years of experience abroad to good use,” Stavros explains. “So I developed Stavras Aquatic Solutions, which brings technology to the aquaculture industry in order to minimize the impact of pollution on marine life.” But heading a company was only the start for this
young and talented scientist. His love for the sea, he explains, is based on the very real need to restore, to clean, to protect and maintain: “to contribute with my knowledge to help save the sea.” While he suggests that the solution to many of the world’s marine issues begins with the education of the general public, Stavros and his like-minded colleagues are in the process of taking practical steps of their own, namely the development of a pioneering product which cleans the seas in a truly innovative manner. Already tested at Limassol Marina, Aqua 250 employs organic methods to clean and treat polluted seawater, vastly improving both water clarity and marine life. Stavros discloses that the team behind Aqua 250 have so far enjoyed incredible success, and this gives him hope for the future. “I’ve always felt I’m a visitor to the sea, and I have great respect for it,” he adds. “Even if you’re not a scientist, try to investigate and understand your environment. After all, the sea was there long before we were, and we’d like it to be there for a long time yet.”

ANCIENT MARINERS
The history of the Mediterranean is a history of its people: the explorers, merchants, armies, fishermen, and crews who have voyaged these seas for over 12 millennia. Even today, as yacht owners cruise from isle to isle and skippers navigate from one end of the sea to the other, their wakes trace the foamy legacy left by their forebears: the ancient mariners of old.
An exact replica of a perfectly preserved 4th century BC merchant ship discovered off the coast of Cyprus, the Kyrenia Liberty gives us a glimpse into the lives of mariners past (left). Representations of boats began appearing in Cyprus towards the end of the Early Bronze Age (2300-2000 BC). History
These were the men and women who journeyed to this idyllic isle in their quest for a new life. Recovering an amphora from the Mazotos, wrecked off the coast of Cyprus around 400BC.
Old Masters
Long before the land was named, eons into the mists of antiquity, Cyprus was the realm of seafarers. These were the men and women who, from the 10th millennium BC, were journeying to this idyllic isle in their quest for a new life. “While the sea level was once much lower, there were no land bridges,” reveals maritime archaeologist and expert on the island’s nautical past, Dr Stella Demesticha. Director of the Cyprus University’s Maritime Archaeological Research Laboratory, Stella’s years of studying history’s sunken treasures have given her insight into the peoples of the time. Research into ancient sites proved that the earliest arrivals must have been fisher-foragers. “These were people who sailed here from neighbouring mainlands; all of the archaeological evidence suggests that the island’s first residents
arrived solely by sea,” she continues. “Of course, while our earliest evidence is indirect,” she clarifies, referencing the tools found at the Aetokremnos site at Akrotiri, “we know of several local Stone Age sites predicated on the exploitation of coastal and marine resources. Bearing in mind that the only way to document this early seafaring is by studying the material cultures of imports and exports, every time we discover something that isn’t local, we can assume it was transported here by the mariners of the past.” Obsidian, for example, is found nowhere in Cyprus. But blades made from the glass-like volcanic rock have been discovered at local sites dating from 6000 BC. Similarly, the provenance of objects discovered on other islands such as Crete, Sicily or Sardinia suggests that seafarers were familiar with sea routes stretching the length and breadth of the Mediterranean. “By the end of the 3rd millennium BC, we have pottery and

iconography representing various vessels, and – most tellingly – we have bronze metal tools,” Stella reveals. Urban centres founded on Cyprus’ abundance of copper (which was mixed with tin to make bronze) were common, and the shipbuilding industry, reliant on the once-rich forests of Cyprus, burgeoned. “From the Amarna tablets found in Egypt, we know the Cypriot king of the 14th century BC sent his merchants abroad; by the 4th century BC, there’s evidence that Cyprus was contributing ships to the Persian Fleet; and from the 3rd century BC we have votive inscriptions discovered in Paphos which tell of two renowned local shipwrights.” But while kings and pharaohs busied themselves with their armies and armadas, the everyday merchant seafarers quietly continued to ply their trade: exporting copper, grain, wine, olive oil, and timber; importing tin, gold and silver, and leaving behind coins, pottery, tools, inscriptions, harbours, stone anchors and shipwrecks to mark their passing. And it’s this last category which includes what is, perhaps, the most important maritime archaeological discovery ever made: the Kyrenia shipwreck.
A Ship of Old
use for a century), and while there’s no concrete evidence as to her exact destination, expert seaman and historian Glafkos Cariolou argues that her ultimate destination may have been located in Assyria or Phoenicia. “The uniqueness of the Kyrenia has vastly improved our knowledge of ancient nautical manufacture, protection, and handling,” he reveals. “And, over the years, this has enabled the construction of three exact replicas of the original vessel.”

An almost perfectly preserved 4th century BC merchant ship, the Kyrenia, was discovered in 1965 by local diver Andreas Cariolou. En route to Cyprus via Samos, Kos, and Rhodes, the wild seas of yore sent the Kyrenia to Davy Jones just off the northern coast of the island. But, thousands of years on, it’s this misadventure
which is proving the most fertile source of information on the seafarers of old: 400 wine amphorae from Rhodes, hundreds of jars of Nisyron almonds, and 29 millstones (used as ballast) from the quarries of Kos attest to the ship’s ports of call, while four wooden spoons,
The Thalassa Museum in Ayia Napa (left) houses many local marine treasures, including a replica of the original Kyrenia vessel. (right) The recovery process is painstaking, every find carefully labelled before being brought to the surface for further study.
While all three replicas have vastly furthered our understanding of shipbuilding and sailing in antiquity, it’s the Kyrenia Liberty which is perhaps the most exciting. Berthed at Limassol Marina, the Liberty is “the only experimental maritime tool of 300 BC with which we can answer in-depth questions regarding the sailing and modus operandi of ancient commercial fleets,” acknowledges Glafkos, who was instrumental in her creation. While the two earlier iterations were intended to test methods of construction, the Liberty’s focus is behaviour: the behaviour of both the craft and her crew. “The Liberty is allowing us to study how the Kyrenia reacted to various conditions, along with her loading capacity, and the mentality of her mariners,” Glafkos explains. Currently crewed by those trained in ancient sailing methods, the Liberty has been undertaking voyages similar to those of the original vessel; journeys which Glafkos suggests were “challenging and enlightening, as well as extremely tiring and sometimes very risky” – a testament to the skills of the Mediterranean’s own ancient mariners. Sailed from Cyprus to Kastellorizo, to Rhodes, Symi, Kos, Leipsoi, Patmos, Samos, Chios, Sounion, Piraeus, and Santorini, the Liberty has been put through her paces – even undergoing a trial ‘sinking’ in an effort to test the limitations of her stability! One particularly difficult journey saw the highly-trained crew take on inclement easterlies to deliver copper ingots, gifts and votives to Greece in time for the Athens Olympics, “following as closely as possible the ancient sea routes of the time.” A priceless source of archaic nautical knowledge, the Liberty is perhaps the ultimate tribute to those who once sailed the Mediterranean: a watery grave that has given us invaluable information about the peoples of our past. For the history of the sea – from the earliest reed craft to the luxury yachts of today – would be nothing without the itinerant traders, intrepid explorers, and industrious crews who have long braved the unknown. Bringing, for the most part, their vessels safely home to shore.

ΤΡΑΚΑΣΟΛ Cultural Centre – Multifunctional Venue Once a warehouse used to store carobs, known as the ‘black gold of Cyprus’ for their export appeal, the listed building of ΤΡΑΚΑΣΟΛ at Limassol Marina dates back to the early 19th century. Its convenient location, a few steps from the Old Port, made it an ideal storage space for a variety of goods, as well as fertilizer. Now renovated as part of the Limassol Marina masterplan design, it houses a marine training school and a cultural centre with multi-purpose function rooms for exhibitions, conferences and events.
