InFebruary2018,theLimbeWildlifeCentrehaditsaccreditationwith thePanAfricanSanctuaryAlliance(PASA)renewedforanotherfive years.PASAisthelargestassociationofwildlifecentresandsanctuaries inAfrica,foundedbytheLimbeWildlifeCentre,alongwith6other primatesanctuaries.Today,PASAincludes23organisationsin13 countriesthatdemonstrateexceptionalcommitmentandthehighest standardsofanimalwelfareandconservationpractices,tosecuringafutureforAfrica’s primatesandtheirhabitat.
InApril2018,theLimbeWildlifeCentrewasvotedBestVolunteer AbroadProjectandchosentofeatureinTutorful’sWildlifeConservation editorialalongwithotherprestigiousorganisationsmakinganotable differenceinwildlifeconservationworldwide.TheLWCgivespeople thechancetovolunteerandassistexperiencedcaregiverswithdaily caregivingactivities,offeringtheopportunityforvolunteerstoexperiencemakinga meaningfulcontributiontoprimateconservation(andallthesatisfactionthisprovides).
InAugust2019,theLimbeWildlifeCentrereceiveda2019ClarkR. BavinWildlifeLawEnforcementAwardattheConferenceoftheParties oftheConventiononInternationalTradeinEndangeredSpeciesof WildFaunaandFlora(CITES)inGeneva,Switzerland,inrecognitionof theremarkableeffortstheLWChasmadetohelpcombatwildlife crime.

Augustsawthearrivalofbothanew Conservator,thegovernment representativeatLWC,andanew AnimalCareManagerforPandrillus.
DrHansEttagbormovedherefromthe BakossiNationalParkhavingalready collaboratedwithusbybeingresponsible fortherescueandtransfertoLWCoflittle babychimpanzeeBakossiinearlyApril. Thatwasawonderfulinterventionand hasresultedinasecondchanceatlifefor Bakossi,whoisnowahappy,healthy, andcheekyinfant,keepingherexpert lovingcaregiversverybusyinourspecial caresection.
Welookforwardwithgreatoptimismto workingwithDrHans,whoclearlyhas passionandunderstandingforanimal careandconservation,andagreat breadthofknowledge.

presentations,itwasahighlyconstructive exchangeoffeedbackandideasonthe projectandhowtoensurethatit continuestosupplythebestgreen browsetoouranimals,whilehelpingto supportthelocalwildlifeandcommunity asbestaspossible.Itwasanincredibly inspiringevent,andextremelysatisfying toseenotonlythelargeattendancebut alsotheoverwhelmingsupportand gratitudefromtheBatokecommunityfor theeffortsofLWCandourgenerous sponsors.
ThequartersawLWC,alongwithseveral otherAfricansanctuaries,winfundingfor asignificantzoonosesresearchand awarenessproject.Thiswillstartduring 2023andwillbeagreatopportunityto helpusshareimportantinformation aboutzoonoticdiseases(thosewhich canbetransmittedbetweenhumans andanimals),thebushmeatandpet trades,andtheOneHealthapproach (whichaddressestheinterconnection betweenpeople,animalsand ecosystemsandworkstoachieve optimalhealthoutcomesforallonlocal, nationalandgloballevels),with communitiesandorganisationsin Cameroon.Itissuchanimportanttopic, encompassingdiseasessuchas tuberculosis,COVIDandEbola,anda goodopportunitytoutilisetheexpertise weareluckytohaveinourvet,
education,andcommunicationteams. Abigthankyoutolong-termsupporters Pro-Wildlifefortheirdeterminedeffortsto makethisprojecthappen.
Nowwewelcomethedryseason,and theopportunitytostepupallourworkin thefieldwhichitrepresents.Our constructionteamhasnonetheless managedtostayincrediblyindustrious throughouttherains,havingcompleted thisquarteralovelyextensiontoour putty-nosedmonkeyenclosure.This shouldgreatlyimproveharmonyinthe group,withthenewsectionlinkedby tunneltothemainenclosure.Thiswas possiblethankstothemuch-appreciated supportofourgenerousfunders.

CompletionofArt4Naturemuralbylocalartist TohBright
TohBright,alongwiththehelpofartistsBorisGobinaandMangaLuluWilliams,has createdabeautifulmuralshowcasingthewildlifeintheCrossRiver-Sanagaregion.The muralissituatedattheentranceoftheLimbeWildlifeCentre.Themuraltakesusona journeyfromtheoceantothetopofMountCameroon,showinguniqueand endangeredspeciessuchastheAfricanmanatee,goliathfrog,drillmonkeyandwestern lowlandgorilla.Themuralnowservesasnotonlyabeautifulpieceofartworkbutalsoan educationaltool.Sinceitscompletion,oureducationteamhaveusedtheartworkto explaintovisitorsaboutCameroon’swildlife.Manyvisitorsalsouseittotakephotographs, whicharesharedonsocialmediaandthusraisingtheprofileoftheLimbeWildlifeCentre tonewaudiences.

Wearepleasedtoannouncethatwehaveanewmemberofourteam–JonathanStark. JonathanwillbejoiningusasthenewAnimalCareManager.Hebringswithhimmany yearsofanimalcareexperience,including12yearsasagorillakeeperatJerseyZoo, whichisoperatedbytheDurrellWildlifeConservationTrust,aninternationallyfamous conservationorganisation.Jonathanalsohasplentyofexperienceworkingwith communitiesinAfricaafterco-foundingtheKafunjoCommunityProjectinUganda.

Thenewsanitationmethodsinplace,suchasthecompulsorywearingoffacemasksand handwashingstations,willensurethesafetyofouranimals,whilepeopleofallagescan nowonceagainseeandlearnaboutsomeoftheincrediblewildlifeofCameroon.This experience,withthehelpofourtrainedeco-guidesandinformationdisplayedatthe centre,willhopefullyhelpallvisitorstoappreciatejusthowimportantitistocareforand protectthesewonderfulcreaturesandtheirnaturalhabitat.
