Chinese Culture In the long run of architectural study, Chinese traditional culture is always the important factor I have been trying to blend into my design. I keep exploring the balance between the actual need of a building with functional value and the imaginative idea of building's soul inside. In the portfolio, attempts to combine the two aspects are my main effort to reach the goal. PORTFOLIO | LIMENG JIANG

CONCEPT
Image
In order to make the building more conspicious at the crossroad which is also facing one of the main streets in Hangzhou City, a striking form seems to play an essential role in the whole design of this particular high-rise building. Sunflower symbolizes an active and positive way of life, which just match the gist of Chinese culture. Corn means an upward atitude towards life, which also match implied meaning of good luck in Chinese tradition. When it is concerned with the material, three colous of glass are selected to constitute the enclosure of high-rise building. At the same time, the supportive structure use steel as the main skeleton.

Original Look:
The skyline of city experienced a process of evolution. At first, the city skyline is no special, all the buildings look the same, especially for high-rise buildings.
Processing:
During the process of the evolution, some buildings start to get rid of the standard shape and stand out. Thus city skyline changes little by little.
Final Solution:
Not as part of the city skyline, but as an independent striking one standing out of the ordinary skyline.

03 STONE BRIDGE
DESIGN OF AN ARCHITECTURAL COMPLEX OVER THE RIVER
Time:2012.6-2012.7 Supervisor:He Yong Competition Work Collaborator: Lu Yuyang A Cultural Complex built over a river in a historic preservation in Chongqing 21
The project aims at a pedestrian connection/ building between two different urban areas. The north part of the river is an extension of the conservation of Chongqing Ciqikou Ancient Town. The ancient town has several hundred years of history, which makes it a famous place of interest in Chongqing urban area. And the south part of the river is a school and some memorial buildings. Therefore, the design selected the stone slate on the river as the concept to complete this cultural complex. At the same time, two cracks were created cross the whole building, which not only provide a channel for river flowing through, but also make an interesting facade. PORTFOLIO | LIMENG JIANG

ARCHITECTURE IN TRANSFORMATION
04
Architecture in Transformation should make responses to current situations and times. What concerns us is the relationship between architecture and city, and the relationship between architecture and natural environment. The competition aims at: (1) searching and constructing a human space with a sense of place in increasingly-fragmented cities or unordered villages; (2) exploring environmentfriendly and sustainable ideas in the information age; (3) integrating creative design concepts with solid basic skills effectively in architectural education. The main requirements include: (1) making detailed examinations and reflections on architectural history; (2) exploring complicated requirements to architecture and environment by current users; (3) paying attention to events in specific sites.

The newly-built building consists of three box cubics with grand staircases in the middle of this building playing a role as a big stand for the lake square as well as an unique stage for various forms of performance. This arrangement for the newly-built building and the lake square is very compatible to each other and naturally presents a scene. The theme of transformation in architecture requires that this site provides some space that could be suitable for uniform function as time going by. Therefore, some changable factors are organized in the scene presented by the site and building. For example, the facilities of lake square are movable and changable and the space inside building is also well-defined as different functional area in the form of box.
