CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Dear Members, Supporters and Sponsors, I would like to welcome you today to the Fairview Rangers club for our FAI Senior Cup second round fixture against Phoenix of the Leinster Senior League. Big massive thanks to Fairview for giving us permission to play the tie on their grounds. They have shown us great support this year on numerous occasions and we are very grateful for their hospitality. I would like to welcome Phoenix today and hope that they enjoy this special occasion. It’s a great honour to play in the Senior Cup and I know both teams will be trying their very best to progress to the third round. Ballynanty have been on a very special journey
this year which has taken us from our home pitch in Shelbourne Park right up to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Everyone will have their own special memories from the last number of months but I hope with all your help, we will create even better ones in the future. We really need to progress our club to the highest level possible and I would ask that your loyal support continues. To Damian, Garrett, staff and players, I wish you the best of luck today and hopefully we can progress to the next round. Come on Balla, Dermot O’Dwyer Chairman: Dermot O’Dwyer, Hon. Secretary: Kieran Kiely, Hon. Treasurer: Anne-Marie Stacke.

VIEW FROM THE DUGOUT Firstly I’d like to welcome Phoenix FC to Limerick and thank Fairview Rangers for the use of their ground again! As this season comes to a close I would like to congratulate the players on a truly magnificent campaign, one of which the club has never seen the likes of before. Their dedication, commitment and discipline have been outstanding all season. Although we had a poor start and did not win any trophies we reached two quarter-finals and two finals culminating on May 25th in the Aviva Stadium….and who knows what could happen if we win today. On a personal note, I would like to thank Garrett Ryan and Ray Dunphy for their help this year. Garrett’s time, knowledge and support have been invaluable this season and everyone has learned a lot from him. Ray has given a lot of time despite working long hours in a busy job. This season the club profile has grown in the city and country and that is down to the performances on the pitch but in tan-
dem with the work done by the Committee. What Dermot and the rest of the committee did this season especially in the six weeks leading up to the FAI Junior Cup Final was nothing short of phenomenal. We, the management and players, thank you for that. Our sponsors, large and small, known and unknown, your continued support has and always will be much appreciated by all involved in the team. The supporters again this season have been second to none; this was shown in the Aviva two weeks ago by the people who travelled to cheers the lads on. Hopefully in the not-too-distant future we will have some silverware to celebrate. Ballynanty Rovers is a big family that get along most of the time! But on behalf of Garrett, Ray and the players I would like to thank our own immediate families for the continued support, patience and understanding this and every season. Thanks, Damian Conway

HISTORY OF BALLYNANTY ROVERS Ballynanty Rovers AFC was founded in 1955 when the newly developed housing estate of Ballynanty Beg on the north side of Limerick city came into being. With a sizable youth population looking for recreational activities it was the far-sightedness of five or six 15-year-olds who got together to form the now nationally famous football club. The fledgling club was very fortunate to garnish support from their immediate area and over time spread their appeal throughout the north side of the city and to this day the fantastic “Balla” support is vital in the success of the club and was nor never will be underestimated. It didn’t take long for Ballynanty Rovers to taste success in junior football when after only two years after our entry we won the area final of the FAI (Cromer Cup); quite an achievement for a relatively new club and the following year we were crowned league champions in a very competitive local league in Limerick. Ballynanty Rovers were already making waves on the national scene when in 1957 we got to the quarter-finals of the FAI Junior Cup only to be beaten by eventual winners Virginians of Dublin 3-2. The same year, our youth team unluckily lost out to Glasheen of Cork by a scoreline of 4-3 in the final of the Munster Youth Cup. Ballynanty had success at nearly all grades, schoolboy and junior, in the intervening years but we had our first provincial success in the 1963/64 season when we won the Munster Youth Cup. Our finest hour came in 1975 when we won the FAI Youth Cup by defeating Wembley of Cork 2-0 after securing the Youth League the same year. The following year, our junior team reached the final of the FAI Junior Cup only to go down to Whitehall Rangers
of Dublin 2-0. That team played 50 games that year, reaching six finals and winning two. In 1981/82, Balla won the Munster Junior Cup, winning a replay with Cork side Casement Celtic as they added the trophy to the League and Lawson Cups the same year. The following year, we got to the final of the FAI Junior Cup for the second time and after a 1-1 draw with St. Francis of Dublin in Tolka Park we lost the replay in Jackman Park 3-1. In 1985, a very successful Youth side won almost everything locally and lost out to Home Farm in the final of the FAI Youth Cup. We didn’t have that level of success in the immediate years that followed but in the 2000s we have won two league titles and were runners-up in the Munster Junior Cup no less than three times. In reaching the FAI Junior Cup final in 2014, we bridged a gap of 31 years since our last appearance… long overdue!
