MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome back to the Fairgreen for today’s Munster Derby against Cork City in the Under-19 Southern Elite Division. We come into this match still unbeaten after our opening three games of the season and overall it is a start that we have to be very pleased with. Last weekend’s win at Mervue United was particularly pleasing considering we had a very young team and only two players born in 1996. We were missing Val Feeney and Ross Mann who were involved with the first-team squad against Cork the following day. It was a great performance. To go 3-0 up after just a half-an-hour was brilliant. We scored four good goals but certainly Conor Maguire’s and James Duggan’s stand out – they were crackers. In fairness to James, he was due one. He had been doing everything right up until then and was unlucky not to open his account before that. The one disappointment was conceding two goals, where we took our foot off it. It was the only negative for us but you are going to get that with young players and they will learn from it. We have good players here and we have used everybody that has been available to us. Again, without going on about it, we have used five substitutes in each game. We might do it in every game but I don’t think there are many squads that have used every player so far. Obviously, we have been without Paudie O’Connor through injury, but everyone else has had a part to play. Playing against Cork, you need your leaders, the likes of Paudie who misses out again and Ross who may not be available having been involved with the first team in Dublin last night. Because of that, I don’t think today’s game will be a true reflection on
where we are going to be. You could look at it both ways; if we don’t get a result then we have those boys to come back in, but if we do then it will be a real positive for what is a very young side. We’re working hard in training and we’re very fit. I have to thank my backroom team of Conor Nestor, who is a great coach, and Derek McCarthy, who has been in doing strength and conditioning. We are very fit and powerful for our age and we have matched all of the opposition we’ve faced so far. Again, thanks to Fairview Rangers AFC for hosting us today and to everyone who has come out to support us – your backing is greatly appreciate and will hopefully help the boys towards a good performance and result. Enjoy the game, Tommy Barrett.

LAST TIME OUT: LIMERICK MAKE IT BACK-TO-BACK WINS Young Superblues continue unbeaten start in Galway Three first-half goals set Limerick on their way as they continued their unbeaten start to the Under-19 Southern Elite Division with a 4-2 win over Mervue United at Fahy’s Field last Saturday afternoon. The young Superblues went into the game with four points from their first two outings, along with two clean-sheets, as they eased into life in the new-look league. And they were quickly on their way here as they were out of sight by the half-hour mark, Conor Maguire, Seán McSweeney and James Duggan all on the mark. Youssef Mahdy – who had been with Limerick in pre-season – then hit a brace for the hosts either side of Killian Hayes’ fourth ten minutes into the second half which made certain of the points for the Shannonsiders. Limerick started brightly and went close through McSweeney inside five minutes after great work down the left from Hayes to play him in. Then the visitors were lucky to survive as Mervue found themselves one-on-one with Tommy Holland but the ‘keeper produced a superb save from close range to keep his side level. Before the quarter-hour, Limerick hit the front. Maguire brought the ball out from the back and fed Kelly who returned it to the centre-half who drove a shot from 15-yards to the bottom corner. The young Superblues were controlling the match and at the midway point of the half they could have made it 2-0 as Ross Fitzgerald’s cross was met by Kelly who forced an impressive stop from the home
netminder. On 27 minutes, though, Tommy Barrett’s side had their second as Kelly went on a great run before laying it off to McSweeney whose stunning strike from 25-yards found the bottom corner. Soon, it was 3-0. Holland collected well and delivered long to Duggan who beat his man inside the box and curled a terrific effort to the top right-hand corner. Before the break, a good team move involving Hayes, Duggan and McSweeney ended with Kelly unlucky to see his header at the back post go just over. Five minutes into the second half, Mervue reduced the deficit through a good finish from Mahdy. Then McSweeney had a header cleared off the line after connecting with a Duggan delivery. Limerick soon restored their three-goal advantage as Kelly broke down the left and crossed for Hayes who volleyed home from inside the box. On 66 minutes, Mahdy got on the scoresheet again as Mervue brought it back to 4-2 after the youngster beat the offside trap and finished from ten-yards. From thereon, the teams cancelled each other out, with the closest Limerick went to a fifth coming five minutes from time as Maguire headed just off target at the back post after Fitzgerald’s cross. Limerick: Tommy Holland, Stephen Nolan, Conor Maguire, Killian Brouder (Matt Keane 70), Eoin Whelan, Oisin Kelly (Shane Lowth 60), Ross Fitzgerald, Declan Cusack, Seán McSweeney (Evan Cusack 90+2), Killian Hayes (Liam McCartan 80), James Duggan (Jack Lynch 75).

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game in Southern Elite Division of the Under-19 League. I wish to welcome Cork, their staff and players to Limerick for today’s fixture and wish them every success in the season ahead. I would also like to thank Fairview Rangers AFC and all their staff for their kind welcome as always. Last Saturday, we had a magnificent 4-2 victory away at Mervue, an acheievement made even better by the fact that a number of our squad were involved with the senior squad the following day so were unavailable. Credit must go to Tommy Barrett and his team for hitting the ground running this season. A good start to the season is so important in terms of momentum and morale and as a result of our unbeaten start we will take the field today full of confidence of another good result. But it’s not just the results that matter at Under-19 level – it’s the development of the players both on the field and off the field. Each 90 minutes will improve their on-field skills as they aim to impress our senior manager who knows more than most about fielding young players in the Premier Division from his time with UCD.
The remainder of our underage teams continue to impress with each and every coaching setup displaying a level of professionalism and commitment that senior teams throughout the country would be envious of. Unfortunately, the injury bug struck again last weekend when young Lee Devitt suffered a broken leg in our under 16B game with Shannon Town. I’d like to thank all those who looked after him on the pitch when the injury took place and the staff at the Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle for ensuring he received the best care. Lee is now on the road to recovery and we look forward to him gracing the Limerick jersey again soon. As always, I would like to acknowledge all our fans who have made the effort to come out this afternoon to see the future of the club in person. Thanks again for your support and enjoy the game. Pat O’Sullivan.
