MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome to our opening home fixture in the Under-19 Southern Elite Division against UCD here at the home of Fairview Rangers. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Albert Sugg, his players, backroom staff and all from UCD who have made the trip down today. While our visitors come into this having played two games, we have just had the one outing to date having been idle last weekend. That was a scoreless draw at Waterford United a fortnight ago, a result and performance I was very happy with. The boys were absolutely fantastic. They dug in and got a very good result. It was particularly pleasing when you consider we are so young and we only had four actual Under-19s in the team. It was probably two points dropped in the finish with the two clear-cut chances we had. Ross Mann usually puts those chances away but their goalkeeper made a great save and then Killian Hayes was unlucky. He did everything right but his shot went just past the post. It was an excellent result, though. Waterford finished fourth in the Elite Division last season, so for us to go down there and play like we did is a fantastic start and it bodes well going forward. It was a great team performance. Everyone played well. There was great grit shown. I think we can compete with the best of them in this division. As I say, Waterford were fourth last season so there’s no reason why not. We need to tidy up on our attacking play and keeping possession. The pitch was fantastic in Tramore but it was bone dry and sticky and we couldn’t zip it around fast which is what we like to do. But we need to be better in possession and finishing. That will come with time, though. All-round, it was a very positive opening game. Having Val Feeney and Ross this season is fantastic for us because they have been up with
the senior team and they’re strong lads, which you need to do well at this level. We have Paudie O’Connor and Matt Keane to come back in as well. We have a good squad here and it’s all about development. It’s a development league and I’m delighted they have brought in the five-substitute rule. I doubt any other team has used five subs yet, unless they’ve been a few goals up, but we’re really about development and I think that proves it. Everyone at the club sends our congratulations to Ross who appeared for the Irish Under-19s in a great 1-0 win over the Netherlands in a friendly in Dublin last Monday night. It’s a great achievement for Ross to make it into Paul Doolin’s full squad which only had three home-based players in it. Ross also represented the homebased Irish Under-18s last February, scoring on the night, and in all it shows the progress he has made since coming to Limerick. We hope there are more such nights to come for Ross and he will certainly be a big player for us this season. I would also like to thank Joe Sweeney and Tommy Lynch for staying behind in Waterford with the three lads who had to go to hospital. It allowed the team to travel home straight away. It was a great gesture by both and we are very grateful to them. Enjoy the match, Tommy Barrett.

IRISH U19’s:LIMERICK’S ROSS MANN IN GREEN Young Superblue appears in Green in memorable win over Oranje Limerick forward Ross Mann came off the bench as the Republic of Ireland Under-19s recorded a memorable 1-0 win over the Netherlands in a friendly at Tallaght Stadium last Monday night. The 18-year-old, from Kilcornan, entered with 20 minutes remaining and helped the Irish to see out victory, which came thanks to Eoghan Stokes’ first-half penalty. Holland were coached by Ajax and Lazio legend Aron Winter but Ireland Under-19 head coach Paul Doolin was the happier boss afterwards as his side produced a very well-disciplined display. Leeds United youngster Stokes had started the game impressively and came close to grabbing the opener after just two minutes when he curled narrowly wide from just outside the penalty area. Just 60 seconds later, Reece Grego-Cox – who Mann replaced – showed his pace down the right wing and was only denied a goal by Dutch ‘keeper Michael Verrips, who saved at his feet. Home ‘keeper Liam Bossin made a brilliant point-blank save to deny Jari Schuurman in the sixth minute after a right-wing cross by Tarik Kada flew across the goal face. Ireland were very unlucky not to score in the 17th minute when Limerick native Joel Coustrain – on the books of Sheffield United – burst through on goal and Verrips had to parry his clipped effort onto an upright before the ball trickled wide. Stokes eventually did break the deadlock in the 25th minute when he steered home
from the penalty spot after Josh Cullen was fouled by Kada. Kada came close to levelling in the 33rd minute with a low strike from just outside the box that Bossin got down well to push around the upright. Three minutes into the second half, Galway FC’s Ryan Manning fired narrowly wide from outside the box. Despite plenty of possession, the home defence was not unduly troubled throughout the second half and in the 79th minute good skill by Harry Charsley saw him cut in from the left and fire goalwards. Verrips made a decent stop. In the 80th minute, the impressive Coustrain was unlucky not to crown his performance with a goal when he fired into the side-netting after good set-up play by Stokes. Sub ‘keeper Harry Doherty ensured Ireland the victory with an 86th minute stop from a long-distance effort by Bilal Ould-Chikh. Republic of Ireland: Liam Bossin, Noe Baba (C), Bobby Moseley, Fiacre Kelleher, Kevin Toner, Connor Dimaio, Reece Grego-Cox, Josh Cullen, Ryan Manning, Eoghan Stokes, Joel Coustrain. Subs: Chris Flanagan for Cullen 46 mins; Harry Charsley for Dimaio 46; Ciarán Keane for Moseley 46; Ross Mann for Grego-Cox 70, Harry Doherty (GK) for Bossin 79; Shaun Donnellan for Kelleher 79; Sean Burke for Coustrain 84. Netherlands: Michael Verrips, Terry Lartey Sanniez, Jerry St. Juste, Abdul Bai Kamara, Roland Baas, Jairo Riedewald, Tarik Kada, Cihat Celik, Pelle van Amersfoort, Jari Schuurman, Steven Bergwijn. Subs: Damien van Bruggen for St. Juste 46; Donny van de Beek for Kamara 46; Richairo Zivkovic for van Amersfoort 46, Suently Alberto for Baas 64; Kenneth Paal for Celik 70; Bilal Ould-Chikh for Kada 70; Leeroy Owusu for Riedewald 86.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome to our first home game in this season’s Southern Elite Division of the Under-19 League. I wish to welcome UCD, their staff and players to Limerick for today’s fixture and wish them every success in the season ahead. This is a very exciting time for our talented bunch of young players who under the tutelage of Tommy Barrett and his coaches will look to continue developing as players and people throughout the season. I’d like to take this chance to welcome our new signings for this season and those who have progressed to the Under-19 squad for the first time. I look forward to you all representing the Limerick jersey with pride, passion and dignity throughout the season ahead and know that the hard work you put in off the field will be reflected with the results on the field. It was a great honour for the club and the player himself when Ross Mann, a member of the Under-19 squad on show today, was capped for Ireland Under-19s last Monday evening against the Netherlands. As one of only three domestically-based players in the squad it was a huge achievement for Ross on a personal level and I’m delighted his friends and family were able to join him in Tallaght Stadium for such a special occasion. Having the likes of Ross recongnised at International level, along with the likes of Kil-
lian Brouder, Tommy Holland and Stephen Nolan at the Under-17 grade, is a wonderful showcase for the work being undertaken to develop the club from the bottom up. Our first game of the season resulted in a 0-0 draw with Waterford United and something that happened at the game epitomised the wonderful sense of togtherness this club now has. Unfortunately, no less than three of our young players, Mark Hoban, Clyde O’Connell and Eoin Whelan suffered injuries on the day, all of which necessitated a visit to and brief stay in the local hospital. Giving up their own time, both Joe Sweeney and Tommy Lynch kindly offered to stay back with these players to make sure they were okay, which allowed the rest of the squad to return to Limerick on time. I really can’t thank Joe and Tommy enough for this. They are both Limerick FC through and through and this selfless gesture is typical of both men. Our underage structures are as important to the future of this club as the performance of our first team and I would like to acknowledge all our fans who have made the effort to come out this afternoon to see the future of the club in person. Thanks again for your support and enjoy the game. Pat O’Sullivan.

FIRST TIME OUT: LIMERICK HELD IN WATERFORD Young Superblues forced to settle for a point in Tramore Ross Mann was denied by the woodwork and then a superb save as Limerick were forced to settle for a point in their Elite Southern Division opener which finished scoreless against Waterford United at Graun Park, Tramore on Sunday 31 August. In what proved to be an even first half, Waterford had the first effort of the afternoon inside three minutes when Ross Fitzpatrick headed narrowly wide. Ethan Boyle then dragged his shot across goal before Limerick gradually grew into the game. On 34 minutes, Tommy Barrett’s side went close. Seán McSweeney was fouled 25-yards from goal after a surging forward run and the youngster stood up to hit a free-kick which was superbly pushed away by Matt Connor. Shortly after, a quick free-kick from the hosts gave Fitzpatrick an opening but agonisingly for Waterford his header from an Aaron O’Connor delivery came back off the bar. On half-time, Limerick felt they should have had a penalty when McSweeney’s shot was blocked by a Waterford hand but the referee failed to award a spot-kick. Early in the second half, Fitzpatrick fired narrowly wide for the hosts as he almost took advantage of a poor goal-kick, and then Boyle struck an effort just over the bar. On 56 minutes, following the introduction of Oisin Kelly for James Duggan, Ross Fitzgerald saw a shot saved comfortably by Connor. Midway through the half, Fitzpatrick shot off target for the home side, who then had a penalty appeal of their own
waved away. Then it was Limerick’s turn to strike the woodwork as Mann saw his 20-yard chip hit the underside of the bar and come out. The 18-year-old then found himself in on goal but he was denied by a brilliant Connor save as the ‘keeper got down low to his left. From the resulting corner, Conor Maguire hit the side-netting. On 77 minutes, Tommy Holland produced a fine stop at the other end to deny substitute Daryl Power, and then Mann flicked an effort just wide for Limerick. Limerick – having been forced to withdraw Eoin Whelan early on – then lost two players through concussion, with Mark Hoban forced off, quickly followed by Clyde O’Connell. Barrett was unable to replace the latter as he had already used all five subs. Late on, both sides could have nicked a winner, firstly Boyle going close and then Killian Hayes should have netted for the Superblues after latching onto Mann’s through-ball but he fired just wide. Then, in the last chance of the game, Mikie Rowe’s cross picked out Power but he directed his effort off target from a promising position, as the sides – following lengthy injury-time – settled for a point apiece on the opening day. Limerick: Tommy Holland, Stephen Nolan, Killian Brouder, Conor Maguire, Eoin Whelan (Clyde O’Connell 10), Val Feeney ©, Mark Hoban (Shane Lowth 80), Ross Fitzgerald (Killian Hayes 65), Ross Mann, Seán McSweeney (Declan Cusack 75), James Duggan (Oisin Kelly 55). Unused Subs: Evan Cusack, Liam McCartan.
