Themba Madima-Track athlete & entrepreneur Question 1
Question 2
Please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you.
When did you realise that you had a natural athletic ability?
Hi my name is Themba Madima and I’m an 800m track athlete as well as a businessman.
I realized I was athletic at very young age. Growing up In Venda and running around In the streets, we played many Games.
My education background is a Degree in Human Movement Sciences and an Honours degree in Human Movemement Sciences, sports and recreation.
When I was in grade 2, I attended a school where I got proper coaching in athletics. From there, I just excelled and realized that running is something I enjoyed. I had the speed for it and it just felt good!
“When I was in grade 11, my mom introduced me to a coach who really showed belief in me.”
Question 3 What made you choose athletics over soccer? So the story with that is, when I was in grade 11, my mom introduced me to a coach who really showed belief in me. She told me that I could get a scholarship for athletics and further my studies at the University of Pretoria. That was also the year I did well at nationals, coming in 3rd place in the 400m and winning a bronze medal. I also finished in the final of the 200m at the South Africa U/18 championships. So getting all these opportunities drew me closer towards athletics than soccer.
Question 4 Question 5 What is your favorite memory from your high school athletics days?
In a sport the focuses on individualism, what do you find as the biggest Challenge?
My favorite high school memory is running at Pildidge Stadium for our annual Inter schools athletics meeting. That stadium has an amazing track for running.
I believe that all athletes are trying to do their best for the sport of athletics. The challenge is just trying to get everything to a place whereby we can compete at an international level.
I have great memories winning gold medals and being the victor ludorum for exceptional performances. I enjoyed having my schoolmates there to see me shine. It was just always an amazing event to take part in.
The major challenges with an individual sport is that it can feel Lonely, but on the flipside there is a support team like coaches and physios to help you as an athlete. Finances are also a challenge in an individual sport along with publicity. That is why we started our company, Backtrack Sports, as way to help athletes out by giving them exposure. We wanted to fill that void.
“My favorite high school Memory is running at Pildidge Stadium.
